You had me at hello...

This is not a deep piece dedicated to some remote young woman and how her succulent lips excreted a greeting to me my heart suddenly pumped an extra amount of blood to my entire body. You thought we were going there, I would suggest you get off at the end of this sentence. This is merely one of my rants, taking you through a short tour of the museum that is my brain.

Just the other day I am working home from work. It had been a long day, so my mood could not have been perky. As I walk past a Seven Eleven store, I see two guys sitting outside the well lit establishment. The first thought that came to mind is how lazy were the guys that came up with the name of this franchise, “Well Bob, we are gonna need a name for our store”, a light bible strikes Peter “well we open at seven and we close at eleven, Seven Eleven!”. Anyway back to the two guys sitting outside.      

As I am slowly approaching the men, my thoughts shaved them out of my reality. I was actually fantasizing about getting out of my skinny jeans which had me so tight that leaking out a measly fart. Whose idea was these skinny jeans anyway; it must have some well endowed fellow who wanted something to exhibit his third leg. “Hello!” shouted one of the gentlemen in my peripheral vision as I walk passed them. When I turned to return the greeting I saw the smile on his face that revealed his missing front teeth, he looked like someone who had just seen his crush. “Sho bra” I responded back. “How are you doing today?” he shortly followed, “I am good bra, and you? I replied. Preserving the smile on his face he eagerly responded “I am good Sir!”. I must admit the sparkle in his eyes and wide smile really made me feel like he saw my perky mood and all he wanted to do was say “it’s all gonna be alright buddy”. He got me.

As I walked away feeling a lot more at ease, my faith in humanity had been slightly had restored. As I continue walking past the Seven Eleven into the darkness I unexpectedly heard a shout coming from the kind gentleman, “Sorry bra, don’t you have a two rand there for me?”

 Just when my confidence in humanity had been reignited, it turns out it was all for a two rand coin. I should have known better.

I have always had a problem with how as people we have lost the sense of being human that we have reached the point where we just do not greet each other. I am sure you can recall a handful of people that you deprived a paltry ‘Hello” to just today. People will literally sit next to you and pretend you are just a mannequin sitting there for aesthetic pleasure. They will walk past you in a tight passage, with only you two squashed in it, but will rather grind on the wall to avoid the slightest contact. People will walk past you on the pavement and stroll past you like an empty Niknak piece of paper. The invention of cell phones has indeed elevated this to another level, it is probably the best excuse invented yet.

A greeting does not have to be audible, but can also be a hand gesture and just a simple nod. White people have over the years invented the fake smile when greeting black people, do not ask me why. I know that in the townships guys are most certainly going to greet you if they are parading the streets with their girlfriends, I think it is a “see my girl? I’m the shit!” thing they have. And then there are the ones who have just bought a new car, they will be on that hooter like a deejay scratching a vinyl hooting at everyone they drive past. Regardless, I respect these greetings because they at least recognize you and acknowledge that you exist, does not matter the intention.  

 I am not one to brag, but I will make sure I greet you. How you feel about it is not my manifesto, but I sure in hell do not expect you respond back, let alone greet me first. Only God knows how many “why are greeting me, just leave me alone” stares I have gotten in my eventful life. Absolutely no care given by me, I am very stingy with those. Although I have always wondered what is so hard for people to greet, it does not cost you anything.

I was wrong, it costs R2.
