12 and 14 for the iterator ask game? (if i can ask more than 1) the height one seems interesting since they specialize in astronomy
(this ask has been sitting in my inbox for a while because I was thinking about the answers, sorry)
12. How tall is your iterator? Is this an average height for a standard iterator?
Three Stars Above Clouds' actual can (the box part) is the same size as other standard iterators, but their legs are longer, and they're not all the same length. TSAC is located in the mountains and stands on uneven ground, so their legs are different lengths to compensate. They also have additional struts anchoring their legs to the mountainside for stability, because avalanches are very common in the region. I guess that means they're slightly taller than average, just considering their actual superstructure.
As for their altitude, their can is located on a mountain summit above the cloud layer. TSAC is heavily based on the Vera Rubin Observatory, which will be located in the mountains of the Atacama Desert in Chile, about 2.6 km above sea level. I also took inspiration from the observatories on top of Mauna Kea in Hawaii, which is about 4.5 km above sea level.
In this post I did a rough calculation of how big I think iterators are, and they came out to about 2.24 km in height... I don't want TSAC to be nearly as tall as the mountain they stand on, so I'll say their mountains are about 4-5 km tall.
TSAC's city also has a very tall spire with an observatory on top, to get an even better view. (Generally you get clearer views the higher you go.) The spire is about 1 km tall.
Taking all of that together, that makes the altitude of TSAC's highest point a little over 7 km above sea level. (As a point of reference, Mount Everest is 8.8 km tall.)
Tumblr media
I edited the height diagram from the aforementioned post to show how TSAC compares to other typical iterators altitude-wise.
I've seen some people theorize that the masks the Ancients wear could double as respirators, because oxygen might become a concern atop iterator cities. Given the height of TSAC's city, either those respirators are mandatory, or the citizens have bioengineered themselves to survive in the low-oxygen environment. Visitors coming into TSAC's city from other iterator cities would very likely suffer some form of altitude sickness while their bodies adjusted to the oxygen levels.
14. Has your iterator ever modified any part of their body (puppet, city, structure components, things that make up the structure like neurons, inspectors, etc.)?
Three Stars Above Clouds' structure is largely the same as it was when they were first built. However, as the amount of data they archived grew, storage became a concern, so they asked their engineers to modify their Memory Conflux to accommodate. TSAC has a large room in their memory conflux dedicated just to archiving data pearls.
In this post I detailed a purposed organism called a Courier whose job is to transport pearls around an iterator superstructure. I'm not sure if this is something all iterators have, or if Couriers were created specifically for TSAC to help them handle their high volume of pearls. But TSAC definitely has lots of them.
After mass ascension, TSAC was hesitant to make any changes to their body, because their engineers were no longer around to fix any issues. However as their equipment ages, they're willing to give it a try out of necessity.
They did make a major change to their city and walls, by encouraging vultures to roost there. They accomplished this through a combination of luring vultures with the lasers in their observatories, and encouraging the growth of vulture grubs (I'm not sure how they accomplished this, they probably dipped into bioengineering a little to grow vulture grubs and then modified the chemical balance in their city to encourage them to grow).
TSAC also probably used their limited manufacturing power to create the raw material vultures use for their masks (iirc Moon mentions it's a combination of bone and synthetic material). As a result, TSAC's city and the upper part of their walls are a mess of vulture nests. In TSAC's version of The Exterior, their equivalent subregion to The Wall is even called The Roost because there's so many vultures. TSAC is fine with it if it means the vultures will help keep scavengers away.
TSAC tends to be very single-minded about their research and dedicates their attention to little else, but I imagine tending to the vultures on their structure would be a nice pastime if they ever somehow got bored.

Shu-shut up, I knew that, Kiriya!!
3: What I wanted to say was why does Midosuji always put the first years in the front to pull!?
Ah, eyah you're right
I'm at my limit, Midosuji-san
They haven't got experience nor stamina yet, so if they pull at this speed they'll be torn off for sure
4: Usually, during practices on the mountains, we third and second years would protect the first years from the wind and lead them until the foot of the mountain!!
Don't turn around to look at me to say it
5: This year we finally got even more first years joining us
I'm happy about that!!
6: But they.... poor guys

Until last year, when the first years were left behind, they had a face of extreme sadness
Tumblr media
Pag 7
1: It's been three years since he showed up
Kyoto Fushimi is changing..... he's their role-model

Huh, then I can be the vice-captain!?
5: Really, Mizuta-san? Yeeah

Yeah
7: And for that, communicate every day so that you can exchange opinions
Opinions!? Communications!?
8: I did that to death this past year!!
Tumblr media
Pag 9

I'm the traditional vice-captain of Ktyofushi bicycle club!!
4: Midosuji-kun!!
Mi- Midosuji-kun!! Can I talk to you!?
Do your best, Funatsu!!

Sometimes I tell myself that I may be a bit obsessed with planes. With the consequences planes have on climate, I mean.
And so I was trying to pinpoint the reasons why. Here’s my trail of thoughts.
As said in the introduction of this study, aviation is one of the most energy-intense forms of consumption.
Let’s take a round trip between Paris and New York. The distance between them is about 11,700 km (7,270 miles). The average time to do that seems to be 7 hours and 50 minutes, twice, so about 15 hours and 40 minutes. Let’s round it up to 16h.
The amount of CO2 that’s directly emitted through the combustion of kerosene for this round trip? About 2 tons. Not for the entire plane okay, just for yourself (which is obtained by dividing the emissions of the plane by the number of passengers).
Let’s compare with other ways of emitting 2 tons:
by watching streaming videos, you would need about 30,000 hours
by car, you’d need to drive about 10,000 km. Can’t really give a time for that but, in France at least, this is the distance an average person does over one year.
by eating red meat once a day over 275 days. Or ~3900 vegetarian meals (more than five years of meals if you eat vegetarian all the time).
2 tons is also the carbon footprint one human should stay below, per year, by 2050, to reach carbon neutrality and not warm the Earth beyond 1,5°C (compared to pre-industrial era; that’s the goal from from the Paris Agreement). It should also be 5 tons by 2030 already.* (Those deadlines don’t mean that it’s fine to emit to the levels we do today. Every ton of greenhouse gas counts and warms the climate.)
So, just for a 16 hours flight you’ve reached those 2 tons. Your carbon budget is closed. But you still have the rest of the year to live. Today there is no way you can live one full year without emitting greenhouse gases directly or indirectly.
So that was the first point. Now some other things:
Flying is a privilege to a minority of people. The fact that we’ve had ~4.5 billions of plane passengers in 2018 doesn’t mean that they were different passengers each time. That year, only 11% of humanity took the plane, including 2% to 4% that flew internationally (see the study linked above).
The injustice is even bigger when you think that 1% of humanity is responsible for about 50% of aviation emissions (note: the people that are less responsible for climate change are also the ones to deal with its worst consequences, aka people from poorer countries)
Unless you have close family members who live somewhere that requires long flights to go, simple breaks and personal holidays can happen in places closer to where we live. IF we really want to go somewhere. Being able to take the plane to discover a new country for personal enjoyment once a year and more isn’t something vital, it’s a comfort and a privilege**. Again, good times can happen in closer places around us.
So around summer and some other holidays, I often find myself hearing people talking about the plane and fly on a regular basis as if it was a normal, common thing. And often times I like those people/coworkers. And I think that overall it’s not like they don’t care about climate change or other environmental issues. I think they’re earnest and even believe that they’re already doing well for the environment by, for instance, sorting their waste in their daily life. Except they probably don’t realize that the plane’s impact is so harmful that the positive impact that was gained through their waste sorting is completely wiped out. By a lot. What I see is that once you’ve taken the habit of regular flights, and as long as you have the money for that, it’s difficult to see and accept that it should be seriously questioned.
Those are the main reasons for my obsession out of my head. Thank you for reading. :)
-
*Note that the average carbon footprint of a French person is 10 tons/year and about 20 tons/year for a North American person. You can check this source for comparisons and see the numbers for any country. But be aware that the numbers are lower because only the CO2 is counted, and not the other greenhouse gases. When counting for all GHG and converting them in CO2 equivalent, France should be above China, and the USA should be above Belgium for instance. It also seems that international aviation isn't counted because of attribution difficulty.
Tumblr media
**When I was a teen I used to dream of traveling everywhere and visiting as many places as possible. Questioning that may feel like a slap to some of us, but some desires can definitely change over time, especially with a broader view of what they imply. I had the huge luck to travel to Japan three times in my life. It was amazing, but I’ve decided that it was enough. It's hard at first. And I can be nostalgic, but most of the time now I’m fine about it. I know that I still have a lot of possibilities even without that, and my desires have become simpler but still fulfilling.
Q&A:
- Clean plane is coming! -> See point 2/ in this paragraph - The plane will leave whether I’m in or not -> See point 3/ in this paragraph - I’m just an individual, it won't change anything -> Do you use your voting right for elections? Yes? Well, you’re only one voice, right? But you still do it. (Bonus; read only the "last word" at the end if you want.) - What about private air travels? -> They’re definitely a problem, both from a greenhouse gases and justice perspective, and they should be reduced to the lowest. But changes must happen everywhere, and about 70% of the fuel used by aviation is estimated to come from commercial flights transporting people.

I had some ideas for the history of human settlement on this planet which are incompatible with my recent decision about what to do with the Alpha Centauri system in my SF setting. I think I'll try to salvage them by putting that planet in a different nearby solar system, tentatively Eta Cassiopeiae, and more-or-less restarting the worldbuilding for Alpha Centauri from scratch.
Putting that planet in the Eta Cassiopeiae system instead of the Alpha Centauri system will involve some changes:
I made it relatively big (1.3 Earth masses) and denser than Earth because Alpha Centauri has a high heavy element abundance, 1.7-1.8 solar. Eta Cassiopeiae has a lower heavy element abundance, 60-70% solar. So I think I'll adjust its mass downward, make it either smaller than Earth or only slightly bigger (maybe 1.1 Earth masses). Surface area and so on would be correspondingly reduced.
Eta Cassiopeiae A is significantly dimmer than Alpha Centauri A, 1.2X Sol's luminosity vs. 1.5X Sol's luminosity. Earth-equivalent sunlight around Eta Cassiopeiae A is around 1.1 AU, and that would be about where this planet orbits.
A less massive planet orbiting closer to its sun will mean the big distantly orbiting moon likely won't work anymore; depending on the exact mass I pick for the planet, it might be too far out for a stable orbit. I think I'll give this planet something more like Earth's moon, in terms of orbit and mass. I'm a bit sad about this cause I liked that distantly orbiting massive moon arrangement I came up with, I thought it was nicely familiar but different, but I think what I'll do is I'll just keep the idea of a 1.3-1.4 Earth mass Earth-like planet with a 3.5-4.5 Luna mass moon orbiting beyond 500,000 km for the totally different Earth-like planet I end up making up for Alpha Centauri A. For the Eta Cassiopeiae planet, I might make the moon closer in mass and orbit to Luna but keep the idea of it being more metal-rich and denser and probably a captured world, instead of one formed by an impact, to still give the system a bit of an alien touch.
The Eta Cassiopeiae binary has a much wider minimum separation than the Alpha Centauri central binary; 36 AU vs. 11.4 AU. The Eta Cassiopeiae A planetary system plausibly looks more like ours, with a couple of hot planets, an Earth-like planet, a cold terrestrial planet, an asteroid belt, and an outer gas giant.
Eta Cassiopeiae B is much dimmer than Alpha Centauri B; 12% vs. 55% Sol's bolometric luminosity. I'm not giving Eta Cassiopeiae B any human-friendly planets.
Eta Cassiopeiae B is even dimmer in visual luminosity: 4% Sol's visual luminosity. As I mentioned, it's also a lot farther out, perigee at 36 AU vs. 11.4 AU for Alpha Centauri B. The apparent brightness of an omnidirectional light source follows the inverse square law. Companion-light on the surface of a habitable zone world of Alpha Centauri A or B will be quite bright, at perigee comparable to daylight at Saturn orbit; bright enough to probably be subjectively experienced as daylight or at least a twilight-like state. Companion-light on the surface of a habitable zone world of Eta Cassiopeiae A will be something like 1/30,000th the brightness of Earth sunlight; a quick check on Wikipedia suggests this will probably be close to or below the dark limit of civil twilight. In other words, for an Earth-like planet around Eta Cassiopeiae A it'll probably be subjective night when the companion star is up but the sun isn't, albeit pretty bright night.
I'm not 100% sure I'll go with Eta Cassiopeiae, I may pick a different star, but right now Eta Cassiopeiae looks like the candidate that fits best with the sort of world I'm envisioning.

La coulée verte, ou promenade plantée
Promenade plantee map
Map of promenade plantee. Promenade plantee map (Île-de-France - France) to print. Promenade plantee map (Île-de-France - France) to download. The promenade plantee is an original walk, which stretches from the Bastille to the Bois de Vincennes, takes you sometimes in the air and sometimes underground. The promenade plantee unique design will take you from viaduct to footbridge, from tunnel to trench, through the East of Paris. It was created in 1988 by Philippe Mathieux and Jacques Vergely, on the site of the old railway line that linked Place de la Bastille to Varenne-Saint-Maur since 1859. Disused in 1969, it gave way to a succession of gardens scattered over 4.5 kilometers: Hector Malot, Reuilly, Reuilly station, Charles-Peguy as its shown in promenade plantee map. Paris has some of Europe most beautiful parks but for something different search out the Promenade Plantee. The promenade plantee its magical, green stroll 10 metres above the street, which begins at the Bastille and winds through the 12th arrondissement for three miles as its shown in promenade plantee map, coming out before the Bois de Vincennes. When a long-abandoned mid-19th century viaduct was converted into the world first elevated park walkway in 1993, most locals thought it a waste of money. Parisians needed time to take a project like this to heart, but now the Promenade is a cherished landmark.
The promenade plantee crosses the entire length of the 12th arrondissement of Paris (4.5 km as its mentioned in promenade plantee map). The promenade plantee follows the route of an old railway line which ceased to be used in 1969. The terminus station was at the Bastille at the current location of the opera house, the trains went to Boissy-Saint-Léger where there is now the RER A. The promenade plantee starts behind the Bastille Opera House. It overlooks the avenue Daumesnil up to the Reuilly garden: it is the famous Viaduc des Arts. The Vivaldi alley is then the commercial part of the promenade. Then this one continues in tunnels and trenches and one ends up joining the golden door and the wood of Vincennes.
Escape Routes: Discover the Promenade Plantée, the Green Heart of Paris Before New York’s High Line there was Paris’ Promenade Plantée – an elevated walkway fashioned from a disused railway that threads together arts venues, bars and parks in the southeastern part of the city. Culture Trip’s Paris correspondent Eleanor Aldridge explores the route. Running above the mêlée of streets, squares and rail lines that crisscross southeast Paris, the Promenade Plantée is a green needle piercing the city’s heart. Beneath this elevated walkway, motos weave in and out of traffic, crowds gather near Place de la Nation for the latest protest and modern developments butt up against some of the 12th arrondissement’s most community-focused neighbourhoods. Ten metres above, a secret world awaits. Construction of the Promenade Plantée, officially known as the Coulée Verte René-Dumont, finished in 1993 – that’s 21 years before the arguably better-known High Line in New York. It runs for nearly five kilometres between Bastille and Vincennes, along a disused rail line that was once plied by chuntering steam trains.
The paved path cuts through parks and old tunnels, while arched green trellises are festooned with roses and framed by cherry blossom in spring. In winter the path becomes starkly beautiful, set against the imperious Haussmannian façades that run alongside it. It’s not only a great walking route – offering peeks into apartments along the way – but the Promenade Plantée also acts as a ready-made itinerary for exploring this corner of the city. Steps make it easy to nip down to street level, or it takes about an hour to walk to the wilds of the Bois de Vincennes.
Viaduc des Arts
The 19th-century railway arches running along Avenue Daumesnil were among the first stretches beneath the Promenade Plantée to be developed. Now known as the Viaduc des Arts, they house bars, studios, restaurants and gallery spaces. Confiture Parisienne is a must-visit: pick up a jar of award-winning jam – perhaps carrot, passionfruit and vanilla – or try a preserve-making class at the weekend. At airy bar-restaurant Gamelle, there’s also bowling, darts and table football, while the food spans hot dogs, tapas and French classics.
Ground Control
Founded six years ago, Ground Control has become the city’s hub for street food, pop-ups, events with a social conscience and anything in between. Sprawling across what was once an enormous SNCF train shed, it encompasses an open-plan food court, several bars, a shop and open spaces used for everything from yoga to painting classes. The buzzy terrace is the place in Paris to find a great spritz and an even better burger, cooked in a refurbished bus.
Bois de Vincennes
The Promenade Plantée ends at the city’s eastern green lung, the Bois de Vincennes – the mirror image of the Bois de Boulogne, west of the city centre. Making up for the lack of parks in central Paris, its 2,459 acres span lakes and woodland interlaced with shady pathways. Once a royal hunting ground, it’s the closest you can get to real countryside these days without leaving the city proper. In summer, festivals and concerts keep things lively well into the evening.
This story appears in Issue 6 of Culture Trip magazine: The Sustainability Issue.

Most of us in the 1980s had a crush on Julian Sands. I know I did. He was very eye catching, had that great accent, and he always chose such interesting movies to be a part of. (Probably my favorite of the bunch is Gothic.)
Tumblr media
But now hearing he is lost and presumed dead on Mount Baldy...
From Wikipedia: On 13 January 2023, Sands, a dedicated mountaineer, went missing while hiking in Mount Baldy, California, in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles. As of 23 January 2023 he has not been located, and police were investigating his whereabouts. The investigation was hindered by severe storms that occurred shortly after Sands went missing. His car was located on 18 January. On 19 January, it was reported that Sands' three adult children joined the ground search for their father, with Sands' son Henry retracing the route his father is believed to have taken, along with an experienced climber. According to reports, Sands' cell phone was last tracked from a ping on 15 January, with no further pings, suggesting it had run out of power. Around the time of his disappearance, Sands was believed to be traversing the Baldy Bowl Trail "which climbs 3,900 feet (1,200 m) over 4.5 miles (7.2 km) to the highest summit in the San Gabriel Mountains". Reports state there was "evidence of avalanches" in the region. A representative of the San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Department confirmed: "The air search is being resumed, but we have not been able to resume a ground search yet due to icy conditions and a threat of avalanches." The Sands family put out a statement on the 11th day since Julian Sands went missing praising “the heroic search teams” and their efforts “on the ground and in the air to bring Julian home.”
Tumblr media
It used to be I would look at that mountain and think of Leonard Cohen who lived as a monk at the Mt. Baldy Zen Center for five years, and all the monks who still live there.
But now every time I see the mountain I think of him. To put that into perspective, the base of the mountain is about a 15 minute drive from me. I see it every day.
Tumblr media
I've hiked up there with my kids, I know what the terrain is like, and all I can think is he slipped and fell, or there was a rock slide or avalanche or something. A part of me hopes his body is never recovered, so that he will always be on my mountain and the mystery of what happened to him will live on.
Or perhaps he is still alive, somewhere?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ugh, I’m reading the recent reviews of the Baldy Bowl Trail on the AllTrails app, the conditions sound horrible out there:

@tokiro07 There were a lot of things you asked about, so I'm answering them in a reblog for anyone interested. Keep in mind my choices for what to include and their placements were heavily influenced by the discord lol.
Morbius Reference: This is more of a joke, as a good amount of these are. At the end of chapter 124, Andy says " It's Loopin' time!" which fans dubbed as a Morbius reference. I don't think I need to explain why.
Phil Doesn't Exist: Another joke. Due to the fact that, at the time of making this, Phil hadn't had much of an impact on the narrative, fans joked he didn't exist.
Tozuka Can't Weigh Characters: In the volume extras, specifically the character profiles, there's a running gag in which most characters will have a category for weight, but will refuse to answer it. Or, better yet, have an excuse. My personal favorite has to be Billy saying he's that he's blind, and therefore can't see a scale.
Reused Character Designs: The protagonists in Tozuka's one-shots look similar to characters in Undead Unluck.
Tumblr media
The protagonist of Cosmic Arc Travel is basically just Josh.
Tumblr media
And the duo from Super Heavy Charge Vanguard look like Enjin and Anno, though much more loosely.
Chair Theory: A panel in chapter 148 depicts a figure in the same helicopter that Creed's boss is in.
Tumblr media
There's been some debate as to who they could be, and some fans, believing it to be a red herring of sorts, started saying that it was a chair. Since this was made, the Master Rules have debuted. It's much more likely to be VI.
Union's Base Is 4.5 km Deep: This is more a wording error on my part, it should be "Union's Base Should Be 4.5 km Deep." It's an estimate made by someone on the discord using Chikara's freefall in chapter 131 as reference. Personally, I think it could be shorter, but it at least gives us a maximum.
Spoil R18 Doujin: It's porn. Possibly one of the first to be made for this fandom, which is one of the reasons it's here (the other being that... it's porn of Spoil). I don't know, I haven't seen it and I don't want to. All I know is that it's on Pixiv.
Roboco Reference Similarities: Admittedly, this one needs better wording, but I'm not sure how to make it concise.
For those not in the know, Me And Roboco is a parody manga published in Jump. In chapter 15, it had a manga making parody, where the protagonists hand in a manuscript referencing Undead Unluck. Coincidentally, this was released the same week that chapter 37 of Undead Unluck did, where Fuuko gets a manuscript looked over, based on her meeting with Andy. Whether it was an insane coincidence, or something the authors planned behind the scenes, I don't know. But still, it's pretty funny.
Cosmic Arc Travel Reference In 152: In the colour page for the chapter in question, Fuuko has a pass for what seems to be the Galaxy Express 999 from Cosmic Arc Travel.

here it is, an undead unluck iceberg i made with the help of the discord. deeeeefinitely needs reworking but i thought i might post it here

Ted Lasso, Season 3 Speculation/Spoilers
Don’t read if you don’t want to think about possible ideas for next season.
So, those of us who have rewatched the series a few times know the attention to detail put into Ted Lasso. I think a lot of clues are given with people’s phones (e.g.texts). Overall, I haven’t found many boo-boos.
Tumblr media
So a while back there was a thread about how Bantr was a poorly put together app for the show.
https://www.reddit.com/r/TedLasso/comments/plng91/the_ux_on_bantr_is_trash_analysis_in_comments/
Some of the issues were the distances of the match-ups, how the symbol for male is used for all the people on the app and how the name “MaLeLeGeNd1” is a suggestion for both Rebecca and Sam.
I just feel that there are no “mistakes” that big in the show and I do wonder if Bantr is either going to come out as a faulty app AND/OR if it’s a cover for something like illegal data mining. To me, it always seemed like a convenient plot device that Bantr just happened to be ready and waiting to sponsor a football team at the right moment. (No disrespect to Keeley, I think she hustles for her work!)
Looking more closely at the names, we know that Rebecca is Bossgirl and Sam is LDN152.
However, here are their individual “suggestions for you”
Rebecca
MaLeLeGeNd1 - 1 km London
GOhoney - 8 km away Surrey
HORNdog - 2 km away Barnes
GINGERprofessor - 3 km away Surrey
Horny_DuDe - 4.5 km away France
born_this_way - 6 km away
Sam
MaLeLeGeNd1 - 1 km London
honey - 2 km away Barnes
GINGERempress - 3 km away Sussex
madam_GRAY - 4.5 km away France
Similar information! I am leaning towards it be a data mining type of app being used to get information about its customers… and perhaps leaking that information which could mean the Sam/Rebecca plot line could get more complicated. I also have a theory that the VC was always run by Rupert who is playing the long game with revenge on Rebecca (and Ted). So the sloppy duplication of online names might be to give the viewer clues.
On a different note, my other guess is that MaLeLeGeNd1 is Ted and the show has pulled a double bait and switch. They gave that hint in Rainbow (S2 Ep5) that Rebecca and Ted were texting on Bantr only to reveal that Rebecca and Sam were texting. But if you look closely, Rebecca had also been texting with MaLeLeGeNd1 on Bantr and the last thing he said was “It’s very hard to believe”.
So am I trying too hard? This is what one does with months before the new season!

Right, this is definitely oriented toward addressing an American problem, which is that there are so few of us and we're so spread out (outside of New York and LA, although even there we are a small minority) that there are a very limited number of places where one can live within walking distance of a synagogue. Most of these areas are extremely expensive, and being within an eruv makes it more so.
For example, all of the homes within a mile of my primary synagogue cost a minimum of $400,000. I haven't looked at the rental market, but I can't imagine it's much better. I currently walk to shul when I can, and each way is 2.8 miles (that's 4.5 km).
The houses within a mile of the other Conservative shul? A minimum of a million dollars. I did a search for Conservative shuls across the country, and did not find a single one with reasonable housing within a walking distance in an area that was also safe for me as a trans person. Not one.
Basically what happened is that as soon as the driving teshuva was approved, it became a low priority for Conservative shuls to remain in residential areas where a community with a broad range of housing could afford to live. Most have relocated to extremely expensive and/or non-residential areas because the default assumption is that everyone will just drive there.
(It's also worth noting that we are currently in a housing crisis across the country, where it is extremely expensive to buy houses and their prices are being artificially inflated, but the rental market is awful too. This has exacerbated the existing issues significantly.)
If you don't want to drive on Shabbat that badly, the assumption is that you will come up with the money somehow or that you will go to an orthodox community. Except those of us who are committed to an egalitarian version of Judaism (never mind other barriers, such as being queer and/or trans) can't just easily make that choice. Some orthodox communities are more open to queer and trans members, and some of them will even do partnership minyanim or similar. But at the end of the day, orthodox is orthodox, and some of us just aren't a good fit for one reason or another.
So then what are our options? There are some handfuls of traditional egalitarian independent minyanim scattered across the country, but they are even fewer than Conservative synagogues and are often harder to find out about. At the end of the day, realistically I am going to have to drive to services on Shabbat or not go at all once I relocate.
And that breaks something in me. I can't just not have a Jewish community, but I'm completely priced out of observing Judaism in the way that I feel is most authentic to my practice and belief in halacha.
So yeah, I dream about other solutions like this, where I'm not forced to choose.
Y'ALL.
I just had an Idea.
Okay hear me out: a traditional egalitarian shul that operates effectively as a weekly retreat center. You drive there before Shabbos, check in, turn in your car keys and your phone and anything else not shabbosdik, and then settle in to your Shabbat-friendly room. You stay for all of Shabbos in an environment that totally facilitates traditional observance with community, activities, full davening, meals, socialization, built-in Shabbos nap time, as well as personal space to do whatever reflection you want and to have a breather away from people if you need it.
Located in the middle of a nice plot of land with an eruv around both the buildings and the natural spaces, but ideally reachable by public transit.
That would deal with SO many of the barriers to traditional observance that are faced by huge parts of liberal Jewish communities now that most shuls are located in rich areas without good public transit. Done right, it would also really help people with a variety of other access needs, including those with young children, elders, and people with mobility issues that normally can't walk a mile (or more) to shul.
And it would facilitate close-knit communities while leveling a lot of the haves and have-nots of hosting and access to Jewish education, having lots of local Jewish family, etc.
Think about how much studying, davening, and learning could happen while also giving people real downtime and time with friends every week. It would be like a lock-in or sleepover or mini-vacation + deep level Torah and learning.
THINK ABOUT IT.

45 Nirvana Hills: Balancing Natural and Modern Elements
Tumblr media
45 Nirvana hills
Making the correct balance in your new home is fundamental for a harmonious look and feel. Houses built now and in the coming years should easily mix conventional angles with changing innovation and tastes. Despite the fact that it sounds dubious, it is possible so long as you remember the accompanying tips. Moreover, you can construct your custom home precisely to your taste.
The most ideal approach to make a calming space regardless of the structure is to make a versatile pallet. Endeavor to avoid elaborate or conspicuous structures. Passages are incredible, yet they look better as huge, cased openings. Crown molding and wide baseboards include plan without being excessively occupied. Open floorplans are extremely prominent; in addition to they make it simple to keep things basic. There are fewer dividers and strange corridors or walkways to work around.

Summer update 2
I have been continuing to explore different types of local, sustainable proteins, trying things I never even realized were food for humans: herring eggs, or ukk, as they are called in Nuxalk, feel like eating floam and are delicious with soy sauce. Every year, huge numbers of herring eggs wash up on shores across the west coast, feeding everything from birds to bears to whales to people. To prepare, I fried them with a little oil until they turned white, and tossed them in soy sauce with a little bit of chili flake (though you can eat them raw). They stick together in large clumps, and you eat them with your fingers. Each egg pops when you crunch it, which is unlike anything I had ever tasted before. In my debate assignment, I argued that humans should shift their diets to something more sustained by the natural world. Here in coastal British Columbia, we are lucky to live near the ocean, which has such an abundance of foods. I am glad that I have the opportunity to practice what I preach and try some of these foods myself.
Last time, I set a goal to prepare and eat the canned moose. I decided the best way to prepare it due to its gamey flavour would be to cook it in a soup. I live next to the Root Cellar Village Green Grocer, and decided to stop in for some local produce. The potatoes, onions, and celery that I bought for the stew were all grown in the Okanagan, and the carrots were grown in Victoria. According to Google Maps (Google, n.d.), Victoria is a 483 kilometer drive from Central Okanagan. The average semi truck gets 6.5 miles out of one gallon of fuel, or about 10.5 km. This means that it took approximately 46 gallons of fuel to transport my food to Victoria, assuming they were all on the same truck. If my food had been from China, however, would use 63,000 gallons of marine fuel a day (Freightwaves Staff, 2020), times 29 days (FREIGHTOS, 2021) equals 1,827,000 gallons of marine fuel. Of course, a cargo ship can hold much more than a semi truck can. A semi truck can hold two shipping containers, while a panamax cargo ship can hold approximately 5,000. 1,827,000 gallons of marine fuel divided by 2,500 = 730 gallons. Overall, this is almost 16 times more costly in fuel than shipping my food in from Central Okanagan. Each gallon of fuel takes approximately 4.5 gallons of water to manufacture (WFC, 2022). By purchasing my food locally from BC, I saved (730*4.5=) 3,285 gallons of water.

My boyfriend thought, Part 1
This is the first part in a series on some of the trip planning fails that my boyfriend orchestrated, back when we were young and foolish, and had no idea on a practical level how much walking we were signing up for. Sometimes things look closer together on a map than they’ll feel on your poor, swollen feet.
This first truly bad decision comes from our first trip to Tokyo, in 2015. I’d been to Japan before, he had not.
We devoted a day in the schedule to Harajuku and Shinjuku, because they’re relatively close together. The idea was, we’d have crepes at Takeshita-dori for breakfast, walk to the Nezu Museum, walk back and have lunch in Harajuku, walk to Meiji Shrine in the nearby park, and from take the subway to the Sword Museum. I think we ended the day at the Metropolitan Government building.
Let’s map this, to give you an idea of what fresh hell this was.
Tumblr media
It was roughly 1.6 km one way to the Nezu museum, so 3.2 km round trip. We had the option of riding the subway one stop to cut down the distance, but this idea was rejected.
Tumblr media
Google can’t accurately map the distance to Meiji shrine, but if you just compare the scale of it to the nearby areas, you can tell it was more than one minute. Mapping it against a location of close to the same distance, we get 800 m. Adding that to our existing distance, we’re at 4 km.
The sword museum has moved from its original location in Shinjuku, so the map is pointing to the old address, which is now a bar.
Tumblr media
Keeping in mind the fact that google can’t calculate through the park, I tried to use an equivalent location for distance, and it adds 1.3km. So we’re now at 5.3 km.
We ended up taking the subway to Shinjuku station, but this didn’t actually save us much. To get to the Tokyo Metropolitan government building from the sword museum would have been 1.1km. But Shinjuku station is so large that we ended up walking a full kilometer just from there to the building, and then back again, so we add 2 km, to get 7.3 km. In miles, that’s about 4.5, not taking into account that we might have strayed from the most direct routes, and with only rough estimates for the inside of Yoyogi park. I believe by the end of that day, google fit told my boyfriend we’d walked 7 miles.
It was August. August in Tokyo is hot and humid, and a typhoon settled over the city for most of the week. If you’ve followed the news, you might know that this summer in Japan has killed people. This wasn’t at that level, but it was still terrible.
Maybe this would be easier for you. I’m not in fantastic shape, and have no shame admitting it. But you’re going to get lost in a place you’ve never been before. You’re going to be jetlagged, and adjusting to different food. I suggest making lighter plans, and adding stuff on if you find you have time and energy left, rather than loading your schedule up so you’re running around.
One of the important lessons of this trip was that just because the maps say you can do something, doesn’t mean you should. Like the time we hit two castles in two different cities in a day, and ended up walking over 10 miles. But that’s a story for another post.
