How Stephen King Got To Finish The Stand

This article contains spoilers for the last two episodes of The Stand.

After nine episodes, the CBS All Access limited series adaptation of Stephen King’s The Stand has come to an end with a final segment written by none other than King himself.

But before we get to that, let’s recap the massive climactic events of last week’s episode eight, which was not titled “The Stand” for nothing.

After setting out on their long walk to New Vegas at the behest of a dying Mother Abagail (Whoopi Goldberg), the little party of Boulder Free Zone leaders finally arrived in Sin City to make their long-awaited stand against Randall Flagg (Alexander Skarsgard) and his minions — minus one.

Stu Redman (James Marsden) has broken his leg in a fall and stayed behind at the bottom of a washout — almost certain to die there — while Larry Underwood (Jovan Adepo), Glen Bateman (Greg Kinnear) and Ray Brentner (Irene Bedard) were captured outside Vegas by Flagg’s right-hand goon Lloyd (Nat Wolff).

In the book, none of the three make it out of Vegas alive — along with thousands of others. Glen is the first to go, shot unceremoniously in his cell by Lloyd for laughing at Flagg to his face. In the just-concluded series, Glen is still shot by Lloyd, but this time during a show trial shown on screens all over the town and meant to rile up Flagg’s depraved supporters.

“It just seemed to me, that for one thing, the murder of Glen in the book never quite made sense to me,” says Ben Cavell as we get on the phone to discuss the end of the series.

He adds that changing Glen’s death from a private cell to a public courtroom changed its impact. “It seemed to me and us that the more dynamic version of that scene was for Glen to be challenging Flagg in front of his people,” he says. “That’s what has consequences for Flagg, is being made to look at all weak in front of the people who give him the adulation from which he derives his power.”

Larry and Ray are scheduled to die next, but not before Flagg’s “bride,” and the mother of his unborn child, Nadine (Amber Heard), hurls herself out a high-rise window after realizing she’s carrying a monster. Her crushed, disfigured head is brought before Larry to soften him up, but his resolve only strengthens, giving him the ability to be strong both for himself and Ray — not to mention the people of Boulder — when they are chained to the bottom of a pool that slowly fills with water.

Their courage sparks a mini-revolt among the denizens of Vegas, including Lloyd. At the same time, Trashcan Man (Ezra Miller) returns from the desert with a nuclear warhead in tow. The stand has been made, the tide has turned against Flagg and now God — or whatever force for good exists in the universe — takes over. A storm of clouds and lightning descend upon the casino — the clouds oddly looking like fingers — to incinerate Flagg, the warhead and New Vegas all at once, along with Larry and Ray.

The hand of God — which is how King describes it in the book and how it was envisioned, as a literal hand, in the 1994 miniseries — has always been problematic for readers and certainly for viewers of the original mini.

“Obviously, there was a lot of talk about how much the hand of God should or should not look like a hand,” says Cavell. “I think we ended up at a very cool hybrid place, where if you want it to be a hand grasping the hotel, it certainly can be. It certainly has those five fingers of cloud coming around it. But it’s not as explicit as the fist in Yellow Submarine or the Monty Python hand coming out of the sky. That’s what we were very concerned about. I’m really happy with where we ended up with that.”

Cavell says that the starting point for the hand of God was the famous photo of the Pillars of Creation, a distant nebula snapped by the Hubble telescope. “If you look at it in a certain way, it kind of looks like fingers, but it doesn’t have to,” says Cavell. “And it is completely naturally occurring. That’s what we wanted. It was very important, at least for me, that you not be required, as a viewer, to accept the characters’ or Mother Abagail’s or anybody’s interpretation of these events.”

By the end of “The Stand,” many of the story’s major characters are dead, and the aftermath of the destruction of Vegas is even visible in the sky from Boulder — where Frannie (Odessa Young) goes into labor and precipitates the events of the ninth and final episode, “The Circle Closes.”

In the final episode, Frannie — keeping hope alive that Stu and the others will return from making their stand — gives birth, but the baby comes down with Captain Trips. However, since Frannie herself is immune, her child inherits her immunity and is able to bounce back from the disease, leaving open the possibility that the superflu will no longer be a part of their lives going forward.

At the same time, Stu — who was discovered and rescued by a returning Tom Cullen (Brad William Henke) — finally arrives home as well. But after a period of rest and recuperation, he and Frannie decide to leave behind a growing Free Zone and journey to Frannie’s hometown of Ogunquit, Maine. But along the way they face one final confrontation.

The episode was written by King himself and incorporates elements from the end of the original novel, the ending of the 1990 expanded edition, and brand new material in which Frannie falls down a well and is badly injured while Stu is out getting supplies. While down there, she has an otherworldly encounter with Flagg, who offers to save her life and provide a comfortable future for her, Stu, the baby and any other future family members in exchange for her fealty.

Frannie firmly refuses the deal, and as Stu arrives back at their camp and struggles to rescue her from the well, he receives unexpected assistance from a young Black girl who — it’s made quite clear — is an incarnation of Mother Abagail sent to help them.

First things first: did the writers’ room of The Stand break the story for the final chapter, or was it wholly developed by the master himself? “We didn’t break it,” says Cavell. “(King) had mentioned that there was this ending that he had been playing with and turning over for 30 years, this thing that had always been nagging him about the ending of the book, which was that Frannie never got her stand…that had always been eating at King. He really wanted to give her a satisfying conclusion to her arc in the book.”

Cavell says that King felt comfortable enough with the way the scripts were going for the rest of The Stand to entrust the creative team with bringing his final chapter to life. “Essentially what we arrived at was, ‘Okay, tell me where you guys are going to be able to leave it at the end of chapter eight, and I’ll pick up there,’” recalls Cavell. Asked if he gave any notes to King on his teleplay, Cavell laughs. “Whenever people ask me, ‘Did you give notes to Stephen King?’ My answer is, ‘Yes. I gave him one note, which was, “Thank you for writing this.”’”

Despite a semblance of hope throughout much of the final episode of The Stand, the show ends on an ominous note taken directly from the last pages of King’s uncut edition of the book: Flagg is reborn and appears on an island before an isolated, primitive tribe, who immediately see the levitating monster — now calling himself “Russell Faraday” — as a god.

“I love the idea that Flagg is eternal and always reborn as this beautiful Alexander Skarsgard avatar, or whatever we decide is the word for how he’s using that form,” says Cavell. “Flagg is the kind of guy who’s not going to let a little defeat like death stop him from his ultimate aim. And of course, the perfect place to go is a place that’s completely isolated, and that the disease hasn’t reached.

“It always felt like such a smart, interesting, inspiring Stephen King ending,” adds Cavell. “To have this ultimate evil, that seems to be eradicated, find a way back into the world, which was lovely, I thought.”

Cavell also says that the re-emergence of Mother Abagail in the form of the young girl — a concept original to this episode — was meant to mirror Flagg’s rebirth. “They are so much, I don’t know, photo negative versions of each other, I think King always felt that there wasn’t a symmetry in Mother Abigail having her own rebirth,” he explains. “I thought it was so smart to make it a very different kind than Flagg’s, where she’s not in her same form… I thought that was really cool and unexpected.”

Now that The Stand has come to its conclusion, Cavell says that the experience was everything he expected it to be. “If you’re going to adapt something that big — in terms of its actual heft, the sprawl of the narrative, and how many people have read it and have been living with it for so long — it should feel big and difficult and unwieldy and enormous. And it did. It felt all of those things. But it also feels like we managed to achieve something that I think is really special, and I just am going to be eternally proud of.”

My EXO’rDIUM in Manila Experience!

Hi guys, this is Admin J, the sole admin of EXO CHART RECORDS. I thought it would be fun to share my EXO’rDIUM experience from Manila, Philippines.

It was a 2-Day concert, for Day 1 I was seated in the Upper Box section, had a nice view of EXO and got to enjoy the performances as a whole, everything went smoothly and my heart was captured by EXO from start to finish.

Now let’s talk about Day 2, because this is 100% the most unique concert experience I have ever had in my life.

I lined up at 3PM, entered around 4PM and the concert started at 5:15 PM. The concert ended around 8:45, it lasted 3.5 hours.

I was in VIP Section, Floor B, Standing (AKA the pit - right side). So I was standing for 6 hours straight, but it was worth it.

Lay was not present during the shows in Manila. The political climate between China & The Philippines is still complicated and he has endorsements, contracts, etc. I understand his situation, I’ve seen EXO 5 times without Lay, so hopefully, one day, I hope to see you on stage with your brothers soon Zhang Yixing. <3

I was extremely close to the stage, only 2 people were in front of me, which I was totally satisfied with, considering I’m very tall and broad, so no problem.

2 people fainted, 1 Filipino girl & 1 Chinese girl, I need to applaud my fellow Filipinos for handling the crisis with compassion, holding up the girl, calling for bouncers quickly and feeding her water. That’s why, if you are planning to watch inside the pit, DRINK UP AND STAY HYDRATED, very important!

Concert started and boom, they push.

See this is where I don’t play, I like to consider myself a gentleman, so I’m not going to push this tiny girl in front of me just to get closer. Good thing I’m strong because those in the back are not going to push me out.

FANSITE MASTERS EVERYWHERE. At one point during the concert, there was a huge camera lens to my left shoulder, a huge lens to my right shoulder, and another lens right in front of me. They were so close, I could hear the rapid sniping of their cameras, photo after photo.

I need to make a pause here and kinda highlight my experience with these fansites. Disclaimer: If you like fansite photos (because I do as well) that’s okay, if you don’t like them, that’s okay too. It’s up to you to decide if you like them or not.

MY EXPERIENCE however, was both Good & Bad, let me start with the bad first. The fansite girl to my LEFT, was... for the lack of a better word, a complete beast. She was pushing me so hard to get closer that I would have fallen, but NO, SORRY GIRL, you were NOT going to ruin this night for me. I pushed her back so hard, she tumbled back and looked at me, and I gave her the biggest death glare of my life. The people around beside me saw us and if you search on twitter, MANY Filipino fans had less than stellar experiences with these girls. Listen, as a man, I’m not going to put my hands on a woman, but you aren’t going to elbow your way to the front and you will NOT DISRESPECT ANYONE to get there.

My advice when dealing with them is, if you can, stand your ground. I don’t know if it’s because I’m a guy and I’m tall that she didn’t try and come for me, because I’ve read experiences online of them pulling on the hair of female fans. If you feel threatened, call the bouncer right away and have them escorted out because these cameras are not permitted. Don’t allow them to touch your personal property (your camera, phone or lightstick), some will try to push your hands, grab your phone, do anything to get a nice shot. Don’t allow them, try and get the bouncer’s attention.

I’m not the type to retaliate, God tells us to never take revenge and to leave it to the Lord. So around 15 minutes later, a bouncer parts our section like the red sea, grabs her around the waist and hauls her OUT of the pit! I’m happy that happened during around the start of the concert, because everything after that was amazing!

My Good experience with a fansite, was a shorter girl who was pretty nice! She had a fellow fansite girl with her and they weren’t being disrespectful or rude. She was talking to me, but I couldn’t understand her, sorry bes. :( But at one point, she thought I was leaving or something, and lightly grabbed me to stay and I think she wanted me to hide her cause I’m tall and I was like “lol ok”. When she wasn’t taking photos, there was a short fan beside her trying to film EXO on stage, but her arms couldn’t really reach EXO since they were on the extended stage; so the fansite girl took her phone and started filming EXO for her since she had longer arms, it was cute. She gave it back and then left, but grabbed me to get into her spot, and I ended up even nearer to EXO.

Overall, I’m happy my experience with these fansite girls was both positive and negative. It showed me two different sides. My guardian who was waiting outside saw a girl leaving a decoy camera lens before entering the arena but her real lens was strapped to her leg, underneath a long skirt. (She saw it when the girl ran). And then AS SOON as the concert ended, all the Korean fansites RAN LIKE WILD, they were probably the first ones to leave. On Day 1, my guardian saw 5 girls, caught, having to leave their lenses before entering. She couldn’t believe it.

OK! So, back to EXO! I will highlight each member.

Suho: Leader Kim! He gave THE most fan service. He’s so grateful, it didn’t matter whether it was a ballad, a dance track, an acoustic session, or whatever, the guy is always waving to the fans. His English is incredibly thoughtful and cute. Please support our leader, he’s someone to be cherished.

Xiumin: SEXY. When ‘White Noise’ came on and he was elevated right in front of my face. Winding down, and body rolling, and everything was EXTRA. Extra face, extra body, extra everything. That’s a man, yet, also a child because 3.6.5 would come on and if you were next to me, you would think that was my favorite song with Xiumin jumping in my face. I haven’t played that song on my iPod in 2 years and I KNEW ALL THE DAMN WORDS.

Chen: FAN SERVICE KING. I know he saw me, we had a connection, I’m currently in his mind as of this moment. But seriously, he was such a performer! Everyone I know thought he was the most handsome that night. His arms too. And his voice, the vocals were on point. It’s such an experience to watch him hit those high notes up close.

Chanyeol: TOBEN HAIR, is a Q-T-PA-2-T, is a real life human puppy. But suddenly transforms and slays the electric guitar while eye body slamming me. His guitar skills were SO GOOD! What a multi-talented king. Last January 2016, for EXO’luXion, he was serving sex with arms that could choke and straight hair. This time, he was too cute, all cuddly and his tummy was FLUFFY, I LOVED IT. His shirt would raise and I would see glory, I’m happy you enjoyed the lechon babe.

Baekhyun: When EXO first appeared, the first person I saw was Baekhyun, and I immediately thought “Shet, the pit is worth it, I see the eyeliner, I see heaven”. There was a fan who got hurt on the middle side of our section, and Baekhyun was staring at the scene the whole time. He was concerned, you could see it in his face. I think a Korean fansite was escorted out after that. His vocals were perfect, not a single imperfection, and he’s an amazing dancer. He really is.

D.O.: I feel like I saw D.O. the most, I probably made the most eye contact with him. He looks like and felt like a man you could bring home and everyone would love him. He had a really beautiful aura around him. He was so beautiful in person, sang like an angel and he also looked so manly in person, all I saw was TopD.O. I’ve converted.

Kai: Absolutely... I need to take my time, because words cannot describe how this human being exists. Photos, Videos, do not do Kai justice, NO JUSTICE AT ALL. His body moves and curves in all the right places, I was stunned, truly the Dancing King. The stairs were right in front of me, so when he came down after performing, I saw his face up close, and God, he’s so handsome.

Sehun: My Pyak Pyak. TT_TT My UB, oh how perfect you were last night. You danced like an angel and I heard your wonderful voice. You had the tiniest waist, the longest limbs and the cutest smile. During ‘Run’, you would jump and I would see your tummy and UGH you killed me. I honestly didn’t care I was probably the only fanboy in my area screaming your name, an Introvert who starts using his voice when you appear.

Lay: He wasn’t there, but he wasn’t forgotten. Lots of EXO-Ls still had their Lay banners, headbands, and screams would become even LOUDER when his face would appear in the screen. Trust and believe, I will see you one day!

My EXO’rDIUM experience is something I will always remember and cherish. EXO sang ‘Hawak Kamay’ again, Queen’s ‘We Will Rock You’ was suddenly included in the setlist, Baekhyun’s PHIXO made another cameo, Kai did some kind of Chicken themed rain dance, which inspired me to order Jollibee for today’s lunch, thanks KimKai, and the Philippines will always love EXO. The loyalty of a Filipino fan will always be with you. I know you guys will come back, probably next year, so until then, I will continue to support my loves. <3 Thank you for a wonderful 2 nights.

The operating system took up maybe 10 of those megabytes, tops. And in an era where connecting to the wider world wasn’t really a big thing, the simplicity of the format was actually kind of nice. Among the more interesting things about the platform: Different interfaces for different skill levels: DOS was not a simple operating system for novices to jump into, and GeoWorks Ensemble made an effort to ensure it was more approachable. It offered two different tiers of usage—“appliances” and “professional,” along with a shell to jump into DOS programs, so you could play Commander Keen without a problem if you really wanted to. For people who had never used a PC before, the strategy was perfect—it had built-in training wheels. Built-in office tools: The software included a variety of apps that were roughly comparable to anything you could find on other operating systems, such as the Mac including a word processor, calendar, and spreadsheet. It also included a Print Shop Pro-style banner-maker, which came in handy if you owned a dot-matrix printer. Overall, these offerings were great for home users, an audience that Microsoft hadn’t really emphasized early on in Windows’ history. (Photo: Ernie Smith) Strong capabilities, low power: But the best part of GeoWorks was the fact that it worked well without really strong hardware. Windows 3.1 really needed a 486 to shine, but GeoWorks could effectively run on a 286 or 386 without any problem. It was stable, and despite the fact that (like early versions of Windows) it was essentially a graphical shell for DOS, it rarely ran into hiccups. The software had a cult fanbase, especially among German computer users, who have done a lot to keep its memory alive. And Quantum Computer Services, another company that had built early success on the Commodore 64, saw GeoWorks as its opportunity to dive into the PC sphere, launching its first online network for IBM’s PS/1 line of computers. “The Promenade interface makes it easy for all family members to use the services, without dealing with the frustrations of complicated commands and functions,” Quantum Executive Vice President Steve Case said in a 1990 press release. “Yet the software is advanced enough to satisfy experienced users of online services.” Within a year, the platform had been reworked into America Online, a company Case famously led throughout the ’90s, and within a decade, the company would be in the middle of an audacious merger with Time Warner—with AOL as one of the defining programs of the Windows era. GeoWorks had AOL before it was cool—a golden opportunity to take over the home PC market, especially as AOL’s early disks essentially included barebones versions of GeoWorks. That essentially allowed modem owners toget a taste of GeoWorks for free. But that wasn’t enough. Beyond AOL, GeoWorks had few third-party apps. Part of the reason for this was that, early on, you needed a Sun workstation to develop software for the platform, a deeply ironic requirement—essentially, you needed a $7,000 computer to develop software for low-end PCs, which meant mom-and-pop shops had no chance to even get on board. At the time, Microsoft was releasing Windows-native development platforms like Visual Basic to win over small developers. But those limitations could have been dealt with, honestly, if the desktop operating system itself gained a significant audience. Even GeoWorks’ biggest fans knew it didn’t stand a chance against Windows, due to Microsoft’s already-established goodwill. “I feel badly that this truly amazing program will never be given a chance, as IBM and Microsoft would never allow it,” one such fan wrote to PC Magazine in 1991. “I hope that software developers will see Ensemble’s amazing potential and will begin developing it. Without third-party developers, Ensemble will never survive.” Microsoft was standing on the shoulders of giants. GeoWorks could barely even reach the ankles. (Photo: Wolfgang Stief/CC BY 2.0) But even though GeoWorks failed to win over PC users won over by Windows, the operating system still had a little life in its bones. That’s because, ultimately, operating systems often live multiple lives even if they fail. They show up in random places, because the software is still useful in certain cases. Palm’s sadly-discarded webOS, for example, currently drives LG’s smart televisions. GEOS was much the same way. Like a cow shoved through the food manufacturing process and split into a million pieces, parts of GEOS showed up in the ingredient lists of all sorts of weird products. Among the places where GEOS showed its bones: Personal digital assistants: Before Palm Computing founder Jeff Hawkins came up with the PalmPilot, he formulated an early take on the platform using a stripped-down version of GEOS. The Tandy Zoomer, which came out in 1993, wasn’t a hit, but the collaboration with GeoWorks, Tandy, and Casio proved informative for Hawkins and his team. It helped set the stage for the first truly successful PDA a few years later—one that didn’t use GEOS. (Not to be outdone, Hewlett-Packard created a PDA for the platform itself.) Early smartphones: GEOS’ role in the mobile revolution wasn’t limited to Palm. In the late ’90s, the operating system was a key part of the Nokia 9000 Communicator, one of the earliest smartphones, and one that was well-loved. It was capable of basic word-processing, graphical web-browsing, and could even edit a spreadsheet. For those perks, it wasn’t cheap, costing $800 at launch, and it was Zack Morris huge. “Modern users take features like mobile email and web browsing for granted, but the Nokia 9000 Communicator was the first device to offer these in a single device,” tech writer Richard Baguley wrote on Medium in 2013. “It may have been a bulky, clunky device, but we still miss it.” A Nokia 9000 Communicator. (Photo: textlad/CC BY 2.0) Electronic typewriters: The ’90s were a bad time to be a typewriter-maker, and Brother was not well-positioned to handle the internet revolution. But it did have something up its sleeve: GEOS. The company collaborated with GeoWorks on a set of printer variations that added basic word processing and desktop publishing capabilities to the mix. They were still typewriters, but they did slightly more interesting things than write type. Primitive netbooks: Brother’s interest in GEOS didn’t just extend to typewriters; it saw GEOS as an opportunity to bring “computing to the masses,” as one press release put it. In 1998, years after GEOS had faded from view for just about everyone else, the typewriter company launched an alternative platform—the $500 GeoBook, a low-power laptop that preceded the rise of netbooks by about a decade. It could surf the web and had much of the software available in the DOS version of GeoWorks, but it didn’t have a hard drive, which helped keep the price down. And much like netbooks, reviewers hated them. “For the price of this unit, you can easily find a discontinued, refurbished or used Windows computer and maybe even a new one. It will do hundreds of things that this machine cannot dream of,” a negative 1998 New York Times review explained. There aren’t any crazy GEOS projects like this nowadays that I’m aware of, but hey, maybe it’s running an ATM somewhere. Despite the number of extra lives GeoWorks has had, the outlook of the platform looks more dire than ever in 2016. This is partly due to the complicated corporate history around GEOS. After the company that created the software dissolved in the late ’90s, the technology was sold off to a firm named NewDeal, which built an office suite out of GEOS, one that looked a lot like Windows 95 and took away a lot of the platform’s unique charm. At one point, the operating system was owned by Ted Turner’s son, who attempted to run a low-cost PC company called MyTurn.com, with the GeoWorks software as its centerpiece. (When Teddy Turner ran for Congress in 2013, his MyTurn.com days came back to haunt him.) Eventually, the operating system ended in the hands of a company called Breadbox, which had essentially treated GeoWorks as a volunteer upkeep project, with the eventual goal of turning the GEOS into an educational software platform that worked in tandem with Android. But recently, Breadbox went into hibernation. In November, founder Frank S. Fischer died unexpectedly as they were in the midst of creating a version of the software for tablets. John F. Howard, his longtime partner on Breadbox, is currently working on next steps, talking things over with Fischer’s family as well as other developers who are interested in the platform. “There are still some legal issues to resolve, but I am confident that there is still some life in the GEOS code,” he wrote on the Breadbox website last month. On the Internet nobody knows if you’re a dog (Steiner, 1993) unless you tell them or even if you are a dog, criminal, or a sick nerd. Your secret identity will be 99% safe from ordinary people in public. Long time ago the fake social media profile is an old joke, but lately it’s evolving, maintaining a fictional online identity has become a lifestyle, a social pursuit, an act of collaborative fiction. The role-playing world has migrated from the fringes of the Internet to that blandest of social networks, Facebook, where it ticks along in parallel to reality. In the present day Facebook has become the host for countless role-player with one for every conceivable fandom1. Nonetheless, Facebook is notoriously strict about fake names, even asking users to rat out friends who use them, and this doesn’t sit well with role-players. Even now there is a split between those who play as themselves and those who using fake profiles for role-playing.

For all its eccentricity, role-playing appears to come naturally to those who do it. And yet it goes against everything Facebook wants from members. Facebook have a service that even manages to harvest shadow profiles on people that haven’t signed up. To join the social network but then act out of character confounds the patterns Facebook aims to record. In a small way it disrupts the slow, pernicious blandness that social media encourages, letting our alter egos spill out messily around the edges. However, Facebook still be one of the most popular gateway for people who doing Role-play.

The question of whether something online is ‘real’ or not remains blurry a lot of people smudged in the line between fact and fiction (Kiberd, 2014). A lot of people will think that Role-playing thing just born on this era but actually it’s not. According to Robin Burks online blogger on disqus website she mentioned that she started online roleplaying since 1995 when she still a young girl at aged 17, the reason she started being a role-player was because she is a rookie writer who love to used online chatting as a tool to create her own characters, Also Burks love spent endless hours playing with Photoshop to create the perfect character photo, and focused on writing and grammar to create interactive stories (which is, in essence, what this kind of roleplaying is). It's only natural that the chat format gave way to social media, once it became more widely used. She also thinks that a lot of people might mistake the demographics of people who are role-playing. They are not just the dreamy or desperate teenagers. She believes that many of these teenagers (like her) are just natural storytellers looking for a creative outlet (Burks, 2010).

I had an opportunity to interview several members who are regular players on a Role-play teens Thailand on Facebook. The first case, Person A she began playing Role-play online at age 16 because of her close friends is addicted to it. She role as Korean K-pop artists that are very popular at that time, It have been four years now, she will turn 19 this year and Person A did not have a plan to leave this Role-play community any time soon. She still attached to this society that everyone can talk about the same interests such as passion on sport, movie, or favorite bands. Her current time of playing Role-play is 3 to 4 hour or more than that. She has a lot of friends in this Facebook Role-play community and she believes that 3 of them (her Role-play friends) are her partners for life. She adds that, Sometimes when she play Facebook as Role-play she feel more comfortable to talk to her Role-play friend even more than her close friends in real life. I wonder why so I asked her for a reason, she replied that in the Role-play world with a fake identity you can complain about everything without worrying that someone will know that secrets, unlike in real life you have to say anything with worry, risky of consequences that will follow, so I asked, Is this the main reason why teens addicted to playing Role-play online. She said that was partly right. In her opinion, it’s like we can created a new identity and being anything she want herself to be. In this world with a lot of social pressure, being who we want to be is the real tough challenge to think about anything and say it out loud. Person A believes that Role-play will give her an opportunity to do anything that she want, have more freedom compare to the real world. The answer from her can relate to The Mask Theory of Eccentricity because when Person A use a Role-play as her mask when she was wearing this false identity mask, she will be able to talk freely and express herself more than she did in the real world. Similar to the case of Person B, he started playing Role-play on Facebook at the age of 15.This guy are in this community for almost five years that make him now 20 year old. At first he was playing it with his friends but then they all left this community and start dealing with their real life for full time activity. However, person B chooses to stay. In role-play society, he feels like he can express his real mood than in his real life. I have complained that It is itself really does not have to care about people in real life with in this society; no one knows his real identity that is similar to the metaphor of wearing masks. It not the new thing that people wear mask to protect their vulnerable and their inner true selves. A lot of people still want to fit in with society that makes wearing masks is one of the solutions that can project social conformance. The next case is Person C that a bit different from the first two cases above. Person C started playing role-play at the age of 13 because he wanted to play the role of the opposite gender that cannot done in real life because of a family issue that create by social norm. However, he was not quite satisfied with his own online behavior. Person C says that Role-play society are like a comfort zone to him, There will be a lot of time that he did not want to do anything but playing role-play on Facebook and leave everything behind. He loves spending his time with his best friend in the Role-play world. But he also said that sometimes when he does role-playing for too long, he feel like it is a waste of a life time, time that he should take to do something useful. For example, because of his role-play addicted syndrome (his own word) he can rarely concentrate on reading text books before final exam. However, when I asked if he would leave this community soon as it seem to give him more drawbacks than benefits, he replied that he had no intention of retiring. This is something that contradicts to the negatively views that person C give to the interview. Another interesting case is Person D that her friend in role-play society, at last become a special person in her real life. She mentioned that her story will sound like a soap opera expectation that become a reality. They are together for 3 years now and person D mentioned that this is the longest relationship that she has ever been in. In her opinion the reason why this relationship is the best of her, it's because person D and this guy know each other in a very different way which she explain that at first because this guy don't know surrounded people in her real life, so her secret will not be revealed by him that make two of them can be completely honest to each other, that make both of them feel like they know each other very well. Similar to the case of a Person SS he was 21 years old guy who passionate in football. At that time, he started to play Facebook as online role-play because he saw many Facebook Fan Pages of football players role-play and it was enjoyable, so it made him want to play it as well. But, his favorite football players had a lot of Fan Pages already so he decided to play as his son instead. He has been playing for almost 2 years now that make him have around 3 to 4 friends in online role-play community but he mentioned that it only one special friend. Person SS and her are compatible and he feel like he can talk to her about everything. That could mean people can link together without knowing each other true identity.

According to the data, gender is one of the reason that make people do role-play. The data from a sample of 2500 teenagers in Thailand who do role-play 62% are women and continue increase and Men at 38% stable. These numbers of female members of the community that rising dramatically compare to men could tell something that can relate to the brain research about reveal sex differences in the brain's form and function (WebMD, 2015). In case of the brain, women have the frontal lobe which works controlling about thought and has quantity more than men's. Frontal lobe will stimulate women to concentrate on their emotions, especially imaginative, so women mostly like to play Facebook as online role-play characters. Whereas, men always focus on logic to survive, wherefore the majority of men don't have time to think about playing it.

In summary, there are various reasons why teenagers like to play Facebook as online role-play characters as I have mentioned above. In teenagers' point of view, playing in online role-play community is not like playing games but it becomes their lifestyles. Nevertheless, most of teenagers think that playing online role-play has a lot of advantages in several aspects, such as, to escape from the boring world, to use online role-play Facebook saving their important details of tasks, to practice writing in both Thai and English. (in case that some groups of people in online role-play community are serious to write grammatically), or to talk exchanging the particulars about their same interests. In the future, the number of people who play online role-play tends to be increased more and more, as a result that it is obviously seen from the change of playing it since starting point in 1995. Online role-play turns to be a lifestyle of teenagers in diverse countries around the world, including Thailand which is the country that people spend time on playing online role-play Facebook more than their real Facebook as well.

Playing Facebook as online role-play characters regards as a great conversion of the movie, musician, or football groupie community. Bringing characters and their profiles to use in playing Facebook by one's self turns into the way of life and association of people who like to act as the characters. Previously, it comes from the people in a little group who play for fun only to parody the characters they like, apart from that time, online role-play community become a new huge trend in Facebook society now. Facebook is converted to be the channel to connect the imaginary world with the real world of anyone. Nowadays, Facebook is the venue of multifold fandoms while Facebook application is also extremely strict about the fake profile detail that is quite an obstacle to play online role-play. The question is what we should estimate that it is true and which we ought to appraise that it is fake. We cannot have the right exceedingly when we cannot do whatever we want to do, or cannot be whoever we want to be earnestly.
