“The label is not in the business of reissuing the founder’s designs but iterating on them—from a distance. It’s been 16 years since Lang left the company, so what’s familiar now could be Old Lang or After Lang. It really depends on who is looking. “I think someone who’s 25 maybe doesn’t know Helmut Lang from back in the day, but they like [the brand],” observed one of the team members. “Why? I think it’s because Helmut Lang always designed things you could live your life in, like five-pocket jeans. We’re not following this other path a lot of fashion brands are going down, which is hype and fast and crazy. We’re giving you really accessible things that can always evolve every season, that you wear every day, but there’s something special to it. You can wear something Helmut from 1995 today; it will still look amazing. I think that was the magic that he had.”
//
Helmut is known for having redefined the 90´s fashion scene with his minimalist designs. He was the head of a movement that represented a generation of young artists in their mature phase, dressing them up with monochromatic garments while adding some fine technical touches with most of his pieces made out of common materials.
In this post we focus on his iconic ballistic vest, which was released within the SS 98 Collection. What made this piece stand out once it was presented is the fact that it is a technical garment which comes from a diametrically opposed world to fashion. Helmut transformed it, creating a subtle and elegant piece. The range of colors chosen for the vest is very sober, which has helped to build up the timeless image that characterizes this piece. Among them, we find black, olive green, white, white/navy, black/navy and navy/white. In the FW 98 Collection the vest also appears in an off-white version as well as in a silk grey finish.
//
“Quintessential minimalism” springs to mind when thinking of Helmut Lang, the namesake label of Austrian designer Helmut Lang. He is arguably one of the most influential designers of the last three decades (although Lang himself retired from fashion in 2005 to fully focus on his art career,) and his legacy still resonates across runways today. The iconic designer pioneered minimalism in the ’90s with his sharp-cut tailoring and androgynous, utilitarian pieces adorned with bondage straps and harnesses.
He introduced streetwear to high-fashion, invented the designer jean, modeled garments on bullet proof vests and was a trailblazer experimenting with technical fabrics, fabricating the military bomber jacket. He was also one of the first designers to show co-ed shows, and he broke new ground in 1998 as the first designer in history to stream a runway show online.
Lang created a new design language, changing the idea of what luxury is, and his oeuvre is still shaping fashion to date – inspiring everyone from Calvin Klein to Raf Simons and Kanye West, along with a string of streetwear brands.
Helmut Lang was born in Austria in 1956, and began designing in his hometown Vienna in 1977 despite lacking formal training. He first showed in Paris in 1986, which is also when he founded his label.
He later teamed up with the now legendary British stylist Melanie Ward (who had discovered and put a teenage Kate Moss on the cover of The Face in 1990), and she became his creative director and muse for 13 years, proving instrumental in ushering in the golden era of minimalism. They relocated to New York in 1997, and the already influential mover and shaker Lang decided to show ahead of the New York season, with other designers following suit, and because of this to this day New York designers show first.
Between 1990 – 1999 jeans, underwear, footwear/accessories along with perfumes were added to the brand, and Lang was the first in the fashion industry to place ads, as well as in National Geographic.
Then in 1999 Prada bought 51% of Helmut Lang, at a time when the company was doing about $100 million in revenue. But by 2004, that total had plunged to about $30 million, which – according to the New York Times – was a result of Prada cutting back on the profitable denim line. Lang left his own label in 2005, and Prada sold the company the following year to the Japanese Link Theory holdings.
Helmut Lang the label was in decline and saw several designers at the helm since Lang’s departure. The turning point came in 2017, when the label announced a relaunch to return to its former glory. Reverting back to the original logo along with a black and white campaign shot by Ethan James Green and a shiny new digital identity, the relaunch was spearheaded by Dazed and Confused’s editor-in-chief Isabella Burley. She was appointed as the first ever editor-in-residence, to oversee all creative aspects of the brand and tap individual designers for solo collections. The label also announced the “Helmut Lang Re-Edition” – authentic reproductions of some of the brand’s staple pieces – and fashion critics and fans all over the world rejoiced.
Shayne Oliver was the first one out debuting in September at New York Fashion Week that year with a diverse cast of underground models sporting gender-fluid silhouettes with bondage influences. He was followed by Mark Thomas (creative director of menswear and womenswear) and Thomas Cawson (creative director of Helmut Lang jeans) for two seasons, and together they have provided a contemporary take on the classic, minimalistic Helmut Lang-style from the ‘90s. Casting the likes of Kanye West and Solange Knowles for the Exactitudes campaign and tapping Travis Scott for a capsule collection has no doubt helped the label to reclaim its position at the forefront of fashion.
/
Precise, intriguing and quietly subversive, Helmut Lang's original output (1986-2005) is recognised as one of contemporary fashion's defining moments. Striking an extraordinary balance between modern tailoring, vintage militaria, cutting-edge streetwear and avant-garde conceptualism, Lang's influence continues to have a lasting impact among the fashion community today.
THEORY
Founded on the principle that a piece of clothing can—and should—be both comfortable and alluring, Theory creates styles lauded for impeccable fit with a modern point of view. Emphasizing superb craftsmanship, the brand's classic silhouettes are refined by current trends and interesting fabrics, resulting in pieces that wear well and remain relevant season after season.

ESS sign-ups
Mmm... maybe sideblogs don’t show up in tag searches?? Because my key chain post does?
So the Escaflowne Secret Santa (ESS) is a gift exchange that’s going into its fifth year. If you love Escaflowne you should join! We love new blood people. Please follow the @esca-ss blog for information and updates!
Thanks @drkstars-art for reminding me! Omg it is almost the end of October isn’t it? :/
Yes I’mma still use this sideblog for sign-ups bc it functions. Sign-ups end 11/16, partners will go out 11/20. Please post gifts by 1/11/2020. (Cannot type ‘2019′ for that ha.)
Sign-up form is here, send your info to icm.9302014 [@] gmail.com to sign up. FAQ is here, if you can’t find the answer holla at me.
Remember that I ignore time zones; if your time zone is right then you’re good!!
Anyone who loves Esca and wants to participate is welcome!!! Reblog and tag!!
-----
If the blog doesn’t work, here’s the FAQ/Information and the Sign-up form:
-
Don’t see your question here? Just contact Rad via any method (email: icm.9302014 [@] gmail.com). [Heeeey, that’s a different email…. Yeah I don’t mind that the internet can see it. Responses will come from my primary email.]
What is the ESS?
The Escaflowne Secret Santa (ESS for short) is a fan-created holiday gift exchange to promote friendship between those who enjoy Escaflowne and to create new works for the fandom.
Who runs the ESS?
radicalrad-1986, call her Rad, hosts the ESS exchange. So far we’ve got four! wonderful years under the belt!
Do you need help organizing/running the ESS or working the Tumblr site?
At this time, no. If help is needed there’s already a list going. If there arises a situation in the future where Rad needs help she’ll ask. Thank you!
Who can join/participate?
Anyone and everyone who loves Escaflowne! You don’t need to be a part of the location we hang at or our little usual group on Tumblr. If you love Esca then come have fun, meet new people, make stuff for the fandom! It does not matter how old you are* or how old a fan you are; come join! (* = Please be 18+/local age of consent to participate in the NSFW exchange.)
How does this work?
1) Sign up by filling out this form and emailing it to icm.9302014 [@] gmail.com.
2) Receive your recipient’s name. 3) Create! (Keep it a secret!) 4) Check in at the requested times. 5) Post! 6) Have fun!! – Each year there will be someone helping Rad give out a set of names - including hers! Please check in with Rad, not the secondary person. Generic questions about the ESS should be directed at Rad. If you receive Rad’s name and have a question about her gift please contact the secondary person OR if you directly ask Rad be sure you’re anonymous.
When are the sign-up dates / posting dates?
These dates will change as the years go by so they’re not set in stone. If Rad is on top of things (haha) sign-ups will begin early October and posting week is mid/late December or early January. For the posting week you have the entire week, you’re not late if you post on Wednesday or Saturday instead of Sunday! :)
What can I do as a gift for my recipient? What quality does it have to be? How much time should I spend on it?
Whatever you want! If you’re a writer, write! If you’re an artist, draw! If you like making animated images, animate away! Music videos, fan soundtracks, manips, whatever your talent is. Please make something for your recipient to enjoy; if they don’t like Dornkirk don’t draw or write something elaborate based on him. Quality and time spent are hard to quantify. No one expects you to spend years on it or break yourself over it. “Please spend more than five minutes and don’t gift a rush job,” goes without saying. Surely no one will give a rushed gift but so it’s been said. Don’t compare yourself to another gifter and feel bad; know that your gift will be loved by the recipient and the fandom for the care and time you put into it.
Can I gift something NSFW or state that I’m fine with receiving it?
Yes! There is a secondary swap for those who are alright with NSFW. If you’re not into NSFW no worries! Must I gift something NSFW if I’m in that group? No; if your inspiration does not lead down that road that’s alright. It’s a way for people who are comfortable in the area to give/receive NSFW while those who are uncomfortable don’t have to worry.
Can I do BOTH swaps if there are two swaps?
Sure! The point is to have fun, so why not double it?
How/where should I post my gift?
Wherever you want; Rad is primarily linking to things on AO3 due to Tumblr’s 12/2018 stupidity.
– NSFW entries that are SFW: Please comment in the post that they are SFW as Rad will tag them that way for the filtering/block systems.
– NSFW entries that are NSFW MUST be under a cut!
– Tagging: Please @-tag this blog, esca-ss. In the tags section please tag it “ESS(space)[year]”. For example, “ESS 2017.” For the NSFW please tag it “NSFW(space)ESS(space)[year]”. Example, “NSFW ESS 2017”. Rad uses the Tumblr Search function to make sure she doesn’t miss postings. If this blog, esca-ss, doesn’t reglog your post within 48 hours please contact either this blog or RadicalRad1986 and nudge me.
Where do I sign up?? How much information should I provide? May I ask for an extra personalized gift?
Please email your form toicm.9302014 [@] gmail.com.
You can provide as much information as you want! Don’t write a book but don’t submit a single sentence either. :) — An ‘extra personalized gift’ means you’d like something based on fic you’ve written or art you’ve drawn or if you really like someone’s headcanon and you want your gift based on that. A generic request is alright but not specific (example of specific: fic A, chapter 2, lines 12-54). You must also include at least three generic likes as well. [If its longfic you can point to a chapter or two because yeah we may not have time to read 500,000 words.] Etc; it is not limited to fic, art, or headcanon. —— Example: “So I’d really like art based on this fic (URL link) that I/someone else wrote.” Or “I’d love to see a story based on this art (URL link) that I/someone else drew.” Or “Xyz posted this headcanon and I’d love to see this explored.“ As well as “I enjoy the VH dynamic, Folken intrigues me, and what the heck was Dryden doing for his five years abroad I mean how did he build his merchant empire-ish thing?” — URLs MUST be included, not just links. Links disappear as things are copied/pasted.
Can/should I message my recipient before the posting date? Can I post a teaser of some sort?
If you want, certainly! Remember though, it’s a secret! Don’t let your recipient know who you are or exactly what you’re making! If you’re having fun that’s the goal! (Example: Message your recipient as anonymous or Submit/send Rad or the ESS a teaser and she’ll post it, that way the original creator is temporarily disconnected from the teaser.)
What if I can’t post my gift on time or I have to duck out due to real life?
This is alright and totally understandable. There is a week’s time in which you can post your gift so don’t feel rushed. No one will look down on you because life happened. You have to take care of yourself first. Being a little late is obviously undesirable but understandable. If you’re going to be late or sadly must duck out please let Rad know asap. There are back-up gifters in place for this reason.
Deadlines and time zones
I try very hard to ignore timezone s. I live in Michigan, USA, so when I say a date/deadline I’m referring to my time zone of Eastern Standard. However, I try to allow twenty-four hours to go by before no longer accepting sign-ups or calling deadlines. If it’s the stated date in your timezone, you’re on time. :)
You sure link to your personal blog a lot… Just sayin’.
While I have notifications turned on for the ESS blog, Tumblr conspires against me and I don’t get the notifications. Notifications usually DO work for my personal blog. Therefore you’re more likely to get a faster response if you contact my personal blog. (Blame Tumblr.)
-
The form must be emailed to icm.9302014 [@] gmail.com. This form is to indicate what you want to receive as a gift; NOT what you don’t want to gift to someone else.
.
1) Screenname: 2) Places on the internet with URLs**: 3) Likes: – Esca universe: – Genre/topics/etc: 4) Dislikes: – Esca universe: – Genre/topics/etc: 5) SFW, NSFW, or both? 6) Does #3 and/or #4 change in SFW vs NSFW exchange? Is something alright with you in one exchange but not alright with you in the other? 7) If needed, are you available as a back-up gifter?
**: Please copy/paste or type out the URL on the form. For example: (radicalrad-1986.tumblr.com). When Rad receives sign-ups and their information she copies and pastes them into a Word/GDrive document. Text links usually don’t/sometimes carry over and thus your locations are lost! (This is an example of a text link.)
——
EXAMPLE:
1) Screenname: Rad (variations apply) 2) Places on the internet with URLs: http://www.radical-rad1986.tumblr.com https://archiveofourown.org/users/rad http://www.deviantart.com/rad1986 http://www.deviantart.com/rad-destiny-arcs http://www.fanfiction.net/~rad
3) Likes: – Esca universe: If you know me at all you know that the Series is my only focus and Eries and the Astons and Dryden are my peeps. I’d LOVE to see more Marlene/Mahad! Love the girls x their men too. ^.^ I do love the Movie and if you want to do my gift in another universe, any universe, that’s totally fine. The usual/standard is also enjoyed but it’s nice to have a larger variety. I’d love to see more of minor characters or pairings. I can be tempted with rairpares if they’re not terribly OOC. :D I would super enjoy fanart of anything I’ve written too, iffn you feel like it. Fanart of anything I’ve written would be wonderful! (My Aston girls fic is in the reworks but the gist is the same.) – Genre/topic/etc: I don’t follow really in-depth things well (like murder/mystery or politics) but pretty much anything. While clearly there won’t be any long-haul in a Christmas gift I am all for the in-depth, long journey instead of the immediate dessert. 4) Dislikes: – Esca universe: Not a fan of Dornkirk. That’s pretty much it! – Genre/topics/etc: Whump, infidelity, gore/extreme violence, unnecessary/extreme ragging on a character/topic. 5) SFW, NSFW, or both? SFW 6) Does #4 and/or #5 change in SFW vs NSFW exchange? Is something alright with you in one exchange but not alright with you in the other? I’m not a fan of Dornkirk but in a NSFW gift his thought process could be explored and while I dislike detailed violence, test subjects could be shown with minor details. 7) If needed, are you available as a back-up gifter? Yup!

Writer Asks
tagged by @wolf08 :) thank you so much for the tag and sorry for being so late, i literally waited until i came home from work. Warning: this is LONG.
1. How did you come up with your username and what does it mean?
my tumblr url is based on the chronically ill made up term painsomnia. i have always had sleep issues but they got worse when i became ill due to being woken up constantly with pain. my username on FF is ChronicallyChill which is based on, yet again, me being chronically ill.
2. Which fanfic of yours has the most feedback? (bookmarks/favourites, follows/subscriptions, visitor hits, kudos)
Tumblr media
The Planning Of A Matriarch wins, hands down. I was so insecure and nervous about sharing anything I wrote but it was so well received! But it’s comedy and so much fluff and who doesn’t appreciate a little fluff? I have lost a lot of love for it because it was stolen and the whole event made me feel like shit. I think I owe a lot of it’s popularity to @mycherryqueen because she rec’d it on her blog. I plan on updating by the anniversary of this fic. But I may put it on hiatus indefinitely after that.
3. What is your FFnNet/AO3 profile icon, and why did you choose it?
I actually don’t have one! I keep thinking I’m going to sit down and draw one or wait until I have the money to commission one of my favorite artists for something. I don’t create anymore but maybe one day I’ll dip back into it so I can finally have a profile icon.
4. Do you have any regular/favourite commenters?
OMG YES. I get sooo excited when I see familiar guest names or usernames. I get so gooey inside and melt when Spanish speakers leave reviews (I can read Spanish guys, feel free to review in Spanish if that makes you more comfortable!) because they wanna share their love even if they can’t write in English well. I have an absolute fave and I shouldn’t but I can’t help it. Monika aka @mcornilliac leaves the BEST reviews and she reviews every chapter.
5. Is there a fanfic that you keep going back to read again and again?
Oh tons. Tons, Tons, Tons! Here’s a few:
The Colors of Midnight by SouthSideStory is possibly my favorite thing they’ve written. I love so many of their SS fics but that’s the one I go back to the most. (also Providence, I love me a soulmate au)
Carrying On by Kiwako
Daimyo’s Daughter by Sakura’s Unicorn (but literally everything of theirs is re-read all of the time)
Spar by D.C. Filbert (warning: major smut)
Life After Detainment by merinxD
You Could See It Change by lavendersakurasasuke (it’s a Gothic Victoria AU but with ninjas!)
Chained by Kirikizu
xxlovendreamsxx has these LOTR AUs....fucking amazing. unfortunately I seem to have lost the link to them
6. How many stories are you subscribed to? How many do you have bookmarked?
lol...i’m just gonna say A LOT. I lost some of them when I didn’t have a FF account and if I didn’t I would have way more but trust me... A LOT.
7. Which AU do you find yourself writing the most?
NON-MASS IS WHERE IT’S AT~ give me more SS non-mass and I will be the happiest person in the world.
8. How many people are subscribed and bookmarked to you in total? (you can view this on the stats page)
if I’m looking at it right....only 373 (me as an author not the individual works). and I love every single one of them.
9. Is there something you’d like to write about but are 😨 of people judging you for it? (Feeling brave? If so, share it!)
Sex scenes. I write it but I always feel nervous about them.
10. Is there anything you would like to be better at? Writing certain scenes or genres, replying to comments, updating better, etc.
I wish I was more comfortable writing action. Also I do so much dialogue...I feel like it’s too much. I wish I was better at replying to comments (I try! like if someone writes me a hefty comment I’m likely to respond if I’m able to). Updating. If I could I would write and update every day.
11. Do you write rarepairs or popular ships more often?
I write for the most popular ship in the Naruto fandom. But I also write ShiItaIzu and as a friend of mine has said before I’m not on an island by myself, I am the island. Google ShiItaIzu and posts to my content is what pops up. my readers seem to like them though so that’s great.
12. How many stories have you posted on FFNet/AO3 to this day (finished and unfinished)?
5. Soon to be 8 if I ever get to publishing the other three. (not including prompt drafts)
13. How many stories do you have saved in/with your writing program?
*maniacal laughter ensues* i have so many....fanfic and original work....some of them are prompts...I’m a mess
14. Do you write down story ideas, or just keep them in your head?
mostly in my head but some things are written down. Most of those are rough drafts already.
15. Have you ever co-authored a story?
No. I’ve made fanfics based off headcanons I practically threw at friends and they told me how they felt about them. But never. I don’t think I ever will, at least not for SS.
16. How did you discover FFNet/AO3?
uh...i have no fucking clue. August of 2016 was when I started loving Naruto again and jumped into consuming all of the SS content I could find. I just googled and read like...everything.
17. Do you consider yourself to be a popular or famous author in your fandom(s) on FFNet/AO3?
LOL....fuck no. I actually think I’m pretty insignificant in the Naruto fandom. But that’s okay.
18. Do you have a nickname or fandom name for your readers?
no. maybe I should.... how about Loves? I’ll try it out in my next author’s note.
19. Was there an author who inspired or encouraged you to write?
I don’t really have an author that inspired me. But @bkceallaigh is the reason anyone reads my stuff. she encouraged me to write and then finally publish a fanfic. And here we are.
20. What writing advice would you give to a beginning author?
Write. Write what you feel. Write what you love. Write what makes you happy. Don’t worry about pleasing people, someone is always going to hate. Just write something you would want to read.
21. Do you plot out your stories, or do you just figure it out as you go?
LMAO. no. the closest I actually get to planning is something like “this is my goal. let’s get to it somehow.” i think I've only planned one story and hopefully I’ll post that prompt soon (it’s the Shape of Water AU).
22. Have you ever gotten a bad comment on a story? If so, what did you do?
Duh! I ranted and bitched to my friends. Some of them were sooooo bad. Like when I say bad it’s like they never even read the story or want to fore their interpretation on people. and then some anti-SS found me and decided to trash SS. like thanks...why the fuck are you here? so I will complain but I don’t care to confront them. Just...don’t like then don’t read.
23. Is there a certain type of scene that you have a hard time writing? (action, smut, etc..)
Smut and action. Mainly ‘cause I want people to see the action in their head when I write but it doesn’t come out right... smut is bad sometimes ‘cause I get a little mechanical and describe the process and forget feeling sometime.
24. What story(s) are you working on now?
Currently I’m mulling over Can I Be Yours? and Kingdom For Two and A Gift From The Universe. I’m really into A Gift From The Universe because it’s non-mass and I’m going to put a lot of focus on InoSai and ShiItaIzu, way more than I’ve done before.
25. Do you plan your next project(s) before you finish your current ongoing story(s)?
lol....I have my WIPs going on at the same time....I’m nowhere near finished.
26. Do you have a daily writing goal set for yourself?
nope. Just write when I can. And wish that I was writing when I wasn’t.
27. Do you think you’ve improved as a writer since you first started?
I want to say yes.
28. What is your favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
honestly....Kingdom For Two is my fic baby.
29. What is your least favorite story(s) that you’ve written?
The Planning Of A Matriarch actually. Like I could have done so much better. It’s still my baby but it’s the one that embarrasses me the most.
30. Where do you 👀 yourself (as a writer) in 5 years?
hopefully with a finished original work lol
31. What is the easiest thing about writing?
The easiest? I don’t know...I can’t really think about it right now...I guess for me, creating dialogue is the easiest thing....I’m really tired right now and may come back to edit this answer lol
32. What is the hardest thing about writing?
Telling myself to love what I write despite not getting the response that I want. There are people who love what I write and I move them with my writing. And I should appreciate what I get.
33. Why do you write?
It’s...so wonderful to see a world that’s trapped in my head come to life in front of me.
I will tag: @kuriquinn @roraewrites @xxxsasusakuxxx @randomwhorcrux @bkceallaigh and anyone that wants to do this
