Your childhood wasn’t the most stable, drive by shootings and cracked out parents didn’t exactly leave room for normalcy, but there was always one constant for you and that was Coco. His mother was also an absolute train wreck. You guys kind of grew up taking care of each other. You remember Leticia being born while he was in jail and trying to talk some sense into Celia about giving the baby a better life. You remember when he got out of jail and joined the Marines. Just as you got him back, he was gone again. It was extremely hard not having him around, but it forced you to really take care of yourself. No more Coco to lean on. You only had yourself.

So after high school, you went to cosmetology school and got yourself a beauty license. You’d taken care of your hair for years and it’s important to you to teach others how to take care of theirs. Natural hair, wigs, weaves, braids, or whatever. You helped your clients with it all and showed them how to keep up with their hair. You got a job at a local shop and you were taking care of yourself. Things were good but you missed your best friend.

Then he was back. Coco was discharged from the military and you thought you’d have him all to yourself, but then he was telling you about joining the Mayans and you barely heard from him for months. Well, you weren’t just about to accept that shit.

You banged on the front door, “Coco open the fuck up! You know who it is! Open this damn door, Johnny!” You yelled, as you pounded your fist against the door.

The door whipped open and Coco stood there with an irritated look on his face. “What the fuck is wrong with you?! Don’t bang on my door like that. You know better.” The look on his face as well as the growl in his voice would have terrified anyone.

You just stared at him before breaking out into a smile. “I missed you.”

Some of the irritation left his face and he actually sighed at you. It was the closest to a pout he’d ever get. “Yeah, yeah. Get your ass inside.”

“I hear you grumbling, but this is what happens when you keep ignoring me. Imma stay on yo head boy!” You told him, walking into his living room before sucking your teeth when you saw who was there.

It was bad enough that Coco joined that damn club and was busy being their prospect. It’s been even worse since he’s basically become best friends with Angel, who happened to be your ex boyfriend. Well, maybe ex fuck buddy was better. He started to push for more and as someone who hated being cornered (and someone with serious reservations about his lifestyle) you broke things off with him. It was infuriating. You finally got Coco back, but he was taken away from you again and with the one person who you wanted to avoid. Feelings were still there, but you hid them by egging him on. Were you acting like a kindergartener pulling someone’s hair they had a crush on? Maybe. Using sass to hide your emotions? You’re a pro at that. Coco had no idea about y’alls past.

“Don’t you have your own place to live? Why the fuck you always over here?” You questioned, setting your purse down in one of the empty chairs.

“Hey! Don’t start Y/N.” Coco interjected, already knowing where this was going. It was equal parts exhausting and entertaining watching those two go back and forth.

“I do. I just like being over here. It’s more opportunities to run into you.” Angel replied from where he was sprawled out on the couch. He had a cap sitting backwards on his head, a gray sleeveless shirt on, jeans, and his legs spread wide.

“You giving off real scrub vibes right now.” You rolled your eyes at him before directing your attention back to Coco. “So where you been? See when you don’t return my calls you make me have to pop up on your ass. So wassup?”

“Nothing is up. You gotta chill. You know I’m prospecting with the club now. I got a job at the scrap yard and everything. I’m just busy living.”

“Mmmhmm...so you’re too busy for me now?” You asked, letting the spoiled brat come out of you a little before deciding it was safer to just change the subject. “ANYWAY, Leticia texted me.”

That caught Coco’s attention. “Why? What’s wrong? Is she okay? What the fuck did my mom do now?” He asked, worry clear in his tone.

You waved your hand to dismiss his concerns. “She’s fine. She has a school dance coming up and she wants me to do her hair. I think perhaps you should drop by and check on her, maybe have a small discussion about the birds and bees…” You implored, and he immediately began shaking his head.

“Nah. You should do it.”

“I’m not family.”

“Yes, you are. Plus you’re a woman. Y’all can talk about shit I don’t get.”

“It would still be good for her to have a male’s perspective. One to tell her how a respectable gentleman acts and better yet, shows her.” She has always pushed for Coco to spend more time with Letty. She knew it was hard from him, but she knew the girl truly loved her older brother.

“Who the fuck is Leticia?” Angel asked, clearly confused.

“His sister.” “My sister.” You and Coco answer at the same time. You both maintained eye contact as you basically glared him into submission. Your eyes conveyed the words you’d never let slip from your lips. ‘Spend some time with your fucking kid, Co’ was the thought written clearly on your face.

“Fine, I will stop by and check in.” He conceded and you smiled widely again. You loved it when you won.

“Y’all are so cute.” Angel teased, a small smirk on his face because he knew it would get under your skin.

The small smile on your face was quickly wiped away at his words. “Shut up. That’s my brother. Period.”

“I still have a chance then.” His smirk turned into a grin. He loved getting a rise out of you.

“Psh.” You scoffed, the retort leaving your lips quick and snappy. “A chance in hell.” 

“Then I’ll meet you there, sweetheart.” He always loved that fire in you. He missed not having it around as much. He felt bad about keeping the relationship from Coco, but he figured he’d bide his time for now. He still wanted you. He could remember the nights spent laid up in your bed as he watched you braid your hair or helped you lotion your body. His favorite thing to do was lather you up because it always led to him knocking your walls down.

You stood up from your chair and walked to where he was seated so you could stand over him. Your hands were on your hip and you just stared at him for a moment. He was so blasé about everything. You wanted to make him stumble just once. “Eat shit, Angel.”

“Only if it’s yours.”

You wanted to laugh so bad. He had such a quick wit and y’alls banter was something you have yet to experience with anyone else. Still, you didn’t want to give him the satisfaction so you turned away from him to keep your smile in check. “You goofy as hell. I don’t have time for this shit. I have appointments. Just needed to make Coco promise me to my face.”

“All that whining about me not returning calls or having time for you and you can’t even stay and hang? You’re so fucking fake.” Coco chuckled and you laughed as well.

“Don’t hate. I do what I gotta do. Walk me out bestie.” You grinned, walking toward the exit and grabbing your purse on your way out.

“Bye mamí.” Angel yelled at you and you merely lifted your hand to give him the finger. His answering laughter warms you up and you can’t help throwing him a look over your shoulder.

Coco walked you out the front door and closed it behind him.

“If you think that ‘tough bitch’ act is putting him off you’re so wrong.”

You stare at Coco with your eyebrows raised giving him that ‘you should know better’ look before going, “Who is acting?”

“Alright, Y/N.” He just shook his head and decided to let y’all figure it out. No way was he gonna jump in the middle of that. He knew it would resolve itself eventually.

The next time you got to see Coco things were an absolute mess. You don’t know exactly what happened but the gang got into a shootout. Coco was injured and your heart was beating against your chest so hard as you raced toward the scrap yard. This was out of your comfortable zone completely, but you needed to see that he was okay. 

Even though on the inside you were freaking out, you tried your best to keep a calm outer appearance as you came face to face with the gang. You went through the basic introductions and then you found yourself crouching in front of a passed out Coco.

“He always said he didn’t really have family so we didn’t know who to contact until Angel told us about you.” The president explained, as you studied the bandages on Coco’s chest. 

You tore your attention from Coco to look at Angel and saw him already looking at you. It was like he was studying you. You gave him a small smile, trying to convey your gratefulness that he contacted you. He just nodded back at you.

“Thank you all for everything you do and did for him.” You looked back at the president, Bishop, and all the other guys.

“He’s our brother.”

“He’s my brother too.” Your gaze went back to Coco, a soft look on your face that made Angel want to just wrap you up in his arms.

Luckily the bullets just grazed Co and nothing vital was hit. You could only sit still for so long before your anxiety got the better of you and you stood up, striding out of the door. You inhaled deeply once you felt the fresh air. 

You would have been so heartbroken if Coco had died. Just the thought made your hands start shaking. You curled them into tight fists and closed your eyes as you focused on slowing your breathing. Your eyes only shot open when you felt someone touch your elbow.

“Hey, you okay?” Angel asked, his eyes soft as he gazed at you so you diverted your eyes.

“I’m fine.” You replied, the sigh you let out in the end betraying your words.

“You want a drink?” He offered and you perked up a little.

“So badly.” You admitted. 

“Come on.”

He led you to the little trailer that was parked on one side of the scrap yard. You wanted to say something smart, but you’d been to his home and knew he didn’t stay here. Plus your heart just wasn’t in it at the moment. He grabbed two beers out of the fridge and opened them before handing you one. You immediately took a big gulp of it.

Angel went to lean back against the fridge and you saw him wince. It dawned on you that he was also in the shootout with Coco. You were so focused on your brother because they said only he was shot, but Angel looked hurt too.

“What happened to you? Don’t tell me you got shot too.” You set the beer down and invaded his personal space. You lifted up his shirt and noticed some bruising there and your head lifted back up quickly to look at him.

“I didn’t get shot. Just got the shit kicked out of me.” Angel explained, staring at you as you fussed over him. 

You let out a loud sigh. “Well you need to be icing it and resting. I can’t have both of y’all fucked up at once.” You murmured, eyes dropping back to his bruises for a moment.

“Are you admitting to actually giving a shit about me now?” Angel inquired and you immediately dropped your grip on his shirt and took a step away from him.

“Don’t start this right now.” You pleaded. It was easy when you two were bantering back and forth, but his face was so serious. You knew the conversation was going to get heavy.

Tears filled your eyes and you closed them as some spilled over.

As I clutched the red embroidered invitation in my left hand, the black decorated RSVP in my right hand, and stared down at the gold embellished invite on my kitchen counter, I realized that my worst nightmare had come true.

High school reunion.

Work party.

Wedding.

And a plus one line on all three cards.

At twenty-seven, I’d like to think that I am a successful woman with her priorities straightened out. I opened my own small business at seventeen, landed a job as a makeup artist in a beauty salon at twenty two, and became a homeowner at twenty five. On Thursdays, I run a book club, and volunteer at my local SPCA on Monday and Wednesday mornings. From an outsider’s perspective, one could say I have it all.

But like everyone else, I’m still not satisfied with my life. There’s something missing, something I won’t be complete without.

How cliche, right?

I know what you’re thinking. Pia, you’re a young, successful, independent woman. You don’t need a man. You shouldn’t want a man.

Again, I’m only twenty-seven. Time is still on my side. But I’d be lying to you if I said I didn’t think about giving up sometimes. I see my friends falling in love, getting married, having babies, and I want that for myself.

Well...most of that. I can do without the kids part. What I want, what I truly want, is a wholehearted love. And one man always comes to mind no matter how hard I try to push him away.

Aside from being my neighbor, Nikki has been my very best friend and the love of my life for so many years. Our friendship blossomed ten years ago when his friend group mingled with mine back in our third year of high school. We were a crazy bunch with various personalities, but it just worked. We all clicked.

Out of the eight of us, Nikki and I were thick as thieves even though our personalities couldn’t be anymore polar. While I was best friends with Amanda, Charlotte, and Vivian since the fifth grade, my relationship with Nikki was just so different. Aside from being my best friend, Nikki was the biggest supporter in my life. He was the only one that stood by my side, defending my integrity, when my friends were skeptical about my lipstick business. Of course, when I became more established, the girls had dropped dollars on every shade and made sure all the girls in our class knew about my business. But Nikki? He let me test the lipstick. On him.

Senior year was the year when some of our group decided to take things to the next level. Vince and Amanda experimented as a couple, and it unsurprisingly only lasted a good four months before Vince had moved on. At eighteen, he’d already had a reputation for sleeping around, and Amanda, the poor soul, was just clueless to his cheating.  

I think the biggest shock was when Nikki and Charlotte had started dating halfway through senior year. From the sidelines, I watched as they became the it couple. I was happy for them, (while simultaneously trying to bury my jealousy), but I had a hard time wrapping my head around the idea of them together. I never would have thought that Nikki’s carefree spirit would mesh well with Charlotte’s stuck up attitude, but for the year they were together, I was proven wrong. Luckily, my relationship with Nikki wasn’t affected. We were still each other’s best friend.

And then college happened.

Well, for some of us.

Vivian and Charlotte attended the most prestigious universities money could buy, and Amanda and I had been accepted into cosmetology school. Luckily, my small business was booming, and I was able to pay for my classes without any help from my family. While the girls and I were off getting our degrees and licenses, the boys were forming a band. An interesting one at that.

By junior year of college, Nikki and Vivian had become official shortly after Viv’s 21st birthday. Again, I watched from the sidelines as the man that I loved gave his love to another woman for three years. This time, I could feel a shift in my friendship with Nikki. We talked a bit less than what was normal for us. Over the years, I barely saw him. His band, officially named Mötley Crüe, had taken up the time he wasn’t spending with Vivian. I had become a mere afterthought, and my heart broke each time I wasn’t able to see him or talk to him. And, to make things even more strange, Tommy and Charlotte had drunkenly eloped in Vegas after one of the boys’ concerts and decided to stay married. At 24, it seemed like everyone was finding their soulmate. Nikki had Viv, Tommy had Charlotte, Mick and Amanda were giving it a try, and Vince and I both weren’t so lucky in the love department.

Fast forward a year later and life for all of us had changed drastically. Nikki and Viv had broken up and it was messy, to say the least. Nikki wasn’t too affected by the breakup, but Viv’s rage had turned her into a woman none of us knew. I had finally worked up the courage to tell Nikki how I felt (and believe me, I wanted to tell him) but, alas, shortly after Mick and Amanda had called it quits, Amanda and Nikki had fallen head over heels for each other. Vince and I were still painfully single (although Vinnie didn’t seem to mind the freedom) and were given the title of ‘godparents’ to Tommy and Charlotte’s son. The boys’ band had become one of the biggest bands in America. And to distract myself from the pain of watching Nikki fall in love yet again with someone who wasn’t me, I bought a house to wallow in.

Which, finally, brings me back to today.

Well, Tommy and Charlotte remain happily married with two little boys. Who knew one drunken night in Vegas could lead to a happily ever after?

Mick and Vivian had married last year and were expecting twin girls. Yes, this shocked everyone, but they were a match made in Heaven. Who knew? Somehow, Mick had broken down the walls around Viv’s heart, and she loved him fiercely.

Vince and Amanda had decided to try again. I was proud of Vince. He’d done a complete 180, always treating Amanda with the respect she deserved.

And Nikki and I? We’re still best friends and closer than ever. We’re happy, all eight of us, after years of drama, devastation, and heartbreak.

With a sigh, I grabbed all three invitations in my hand and plopped down on my sofa. Okay, so I lied, I’m not completely happy. The plus one line on each invitation was just a painful reminder of how lonely I was.

And then my mind wandered to Nikki. Asking him to be my plus one would be practical, but I’m not sure my heart could handle knowing it wasn’t real.

But as I glanced down at the invitations once more, I realized that I couldn’t keep living like this. For years, I’d been pining over a man who dated all of my friends and neglected to give me a chance. I shouldn’t still want him as much as I do. He’s made it clear that I’m not and will never be more than a friend. And it’s about time I move on from the fairytale ending in my head.

So with a firm grip on the cards and a stern look on my face, I flung open my door and marched right over to Nikki’s house.

And he answered on the third knock, looking even more handsome than the last time I’d seen him.

Okay... I’ll be honest I don’t know what this means but this is what I’ve got. 

Y/n lived in Staten Island with her older brother Nick, he was about 7 years older than her. She’s lived with him ever since their mom decided that she was too much of a burden to take care of. Nick owned his own barbershop called True Gents where she’s been working reception since she was 15, she was now 19 and Nick would show her some things here and there letting her practice on his bald head when the stubble would start to grow back. Y/n had recently started cosmetology school and was taking classes at night, while juggling her duties at the shop during the day. Nick was very proud of y/n and the work ethic that she has when it comes to the shop and her schoolwork. Y/n was sitting at the front desk doing some homework in the shop, it was a pretty slow day today and Nick was working with a client. Jeff leans up against the desk smirking at Y/n “Hey Y/n/n.” Y/n looks up at him and smiles. “Hey love, I didn’t realize you were coming in today.” She says closing her books giving him her full attention. Valentines Day. A day where people celebrate being in love or having someone to love on. Usually when we think of Valentines Day, we think of spending time with our significant other and having sweet treats and great food. People that are alone however, tend to either be on the spectrum of hating Valentines Day or not even caring about it because it's a government holiday. The annoyed single people hate it because of the sappy couple postings, cheesy romantic comedies, stalking their ex’s profiles to see what they're doing, and themselves spending it alone. 

As a single person myself I can honestly say that I am not upset that I am single this Valentines Day. Maybe its just me getting older and not caring about having someone or maybe I’ve just been tired of the men I have been dating that I don’t feel the need to date anymore. Most of my life I have been in relationships that have the length of 6 months to 3 years being the longest. As far as being in love, I can recall myself truly being in love with a man twice in my lifetime. I don’t know about you but I have had my fair share of men throughout my life. Before I came to know Christ, I was in and out of relationships faster than you could imagine. You are a lukewarm christian trying to make it in the world and not even looking up at the father, only looking at yourself. And that was the breaking point for me to start turning my life around and taking my life more seriously as well as my relationship with God. Attending bible study, going to church, having accountability partners, and managing my own mental health with therapy. Believe me, when I started looking at Jesus and not of the worldly standards my life got clearer but harder at the same time. When you give your life up for Jesus its not always going to be easy, the more you reach up to Him the more the devil is going to wanna block you from your blessings.

 Would you believe me if I told you that I said I’ve never been proposed to? I’m 28 now about to be 29 and I just think to myself sometimes ...why? I’m a good looking woman, attending school online to get my masters degree for psychology, attending church and bible studies, working a part time job doing my hair business since I have my cosmetology license, and I am pretty nice and shall I say funny. Let me tell you, the thoughts of feeling not good enough have come into my mind but I know those are not pure or the right thoughts that Jesus wants me to be thinking. Don’t even get me started on my family members asking me when I’m going to have a baby or pressuring me to adopt. Before you start thinking let me stop you right there and say I love children. I think they are the cutest little people in the world but right now kids are the very last thing on my mind!

I want to encourage you and encourage myself as I feel the Holy Spirit is within me typing up this blog to let you know that you don’t need to be swooped up like in those Disney movies to be truly happy. Let me also say that if you are married or in a relationship am I by no means trying to knock down your union with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend. the Bible says in Ecclesiastes 4:9 “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep war,. But how can one keep warm alone?” Marriage is a union and should be sacred. Honor your husband and honor your wife, you both are a team made in the image of our Holy Father.

God created us to love one another no matter what. Even if someone else is having what you wish you had, let them be happy in their life. Love them and support them. Be a good friend and helping hand. Whenever you get angry or jealous of someone else's success remember that God isn't finished with you yet! He has more blessings coming your way and just because you aren’t happy yourself does not mean you take out your personal feelings on others. If someone is mean to you or belittling you because you express how you don’t wanna be alone or hurt because you and your boyfriend/girlfriend broke up, take the high road. Don’t let anyone steal your joy because joy can only come from the Lord and no one else. He is after all the one who created happiness! 

I remember when I would take things so personally and I would want to hurt the people who have hurt me. Even if they did deserve to be punished, I know the one who has that power to give me justice. I have yet to type down my testimony on here but I will when I have the time because its pretty lengthy but you will see why I think the way that I do now. Before I used to hold grudges really badly towards the people who have hurt me. When I tell you I have been through the wringer, I mean it. I have been sexually abused by people who I thought would never hurt me, I have been verbally abused by people who I thought would never hurt me and last by not least I have both been verbally and sexually abused from people I hardly even knew. I have been told I am scum of the earth and no one will want me and I have also been told that no one is going to want leftover goods. I have been sexually assaulted in a place of work. I have been raped by a few men in my past. Some I knew and some I didn’t. All those things have stuck with me but they do not define me. The only one who defines me is Jesus Christ and thank God I have a savior because I can’t live this life all by myself, If I try I would probably would have died by now. I have in the past held these situations in my heart and it has caused me so much pain. Trust me, I wanted revenge but I never got it. Then God really brought me down to a place where I forgave them and myself. My anger cannot bring justice for what they have done, only God can. One movie that really sticks out to me is The Shack, now that is a good movie to watch about forgiveness. If you have time, check it out because you won't regret it.

Another verse comes to mind for me is Luke 6 27-33 “But to you who are willing to listen I say, love your enemies! Do good to those who hate you. Bless those who curse you. Pray for those who hurt you. If someone slaps you on one cheek, offer the other cheek also. If someone demands your coat, offer your shirt also.Give to anyone who asks; and when things are taken away from. you, don’t try to get them back. Do to others as you would like them to do to you. If you only love only those who love you, why should you get credit for that? Even sinners love those who love them! And if you do good only to those who do good to you, why should you get credit? Even sinners do that much!”

Jesus said that when we love people even when they have hurt us. We have to be the ones that rise up from the earthy things going on in the world. I know I tended to go a little off topic but days like this remind me of my past and it brings me to the present. I want to let you know that you aren't alone today. You do have a valentine and his name is Jesus Christ. He will always be perfect. He will never leave you. He will always be there for you no matter what time of the day or night it is. He will never call you names or do things to hurt you, only help you become the best version of yourself. Valentines Day is a fun holiday but it does not define who love truly is. Love is a person and His name is Jesus. I encourage you to reach out to someone today, even if you aren’t feeling like it. Tell someone you love them today and you are there for them. Tell them that you are thinking of them. Jesus loves you and He will never let you go. I remember when my pastor said this line and ill never forget it. “Once you let Him in, He won't move out!” and I firmly believe that til the day I die. 

If you haven’t already and you would like to give your life to Jesus today repeat after me. Jesus, I need you. I’m not perfect and I don’t claim to be. But I need a savior and I’m ready for my life to change for the better. Take me out of myself and let me live the life you promised for me. I love you. I accept you into my life. I welcome you. Amen.

Carly Veatch didn’t have a good start to life; none of her five other half-siblings did. Nights often ended in hungry bellies and such frustration that Carly thought it would wreak havoc on her insides. Truthfully, Carly grew up angry; her mother was an addict who had absolutely no remorse for not caring for any one of her children. Carly and her siblings grew up having to not only care for each other but the responsibilities that no children should have had to. Carly got a job at a young age, wasn’t allowed to join after school activities or make any lasting, genuine friendships; it wasn’t because she wasn’t interested but it was merely because she had more pressing matters to handle. She had a serious need to help out her family, even with three older brothers. Carly was always trying to help, always trying to show her family she could pull her weight. She’d be the one to chase around every member of the family for a haircut or a possible new scheme on how they could make money, which usually ended up in laughter from her older brothers. Her ideas, at times, were a bit aggressive for a ten-year-old. Even with a mother who they all preferred to be missing, Carly wanted this family to work.

Her older brother, Kit, was her role model. Only a year older than her, he showed more responsibility and compassion for keeping the family together than any of the others. He went out of his way to take care of them, even if it hindered himself personally, and Carly took great pride in him. She was mesmerized by how well Kit handled it all. You could say Carly modeled herself after Kit for quite some time growing up. For a while, Carly genuinely believed the Veatch siblings could live this way; avoiding their mother and making ends meet. It wasn’t ideal but Carly loved her siblings so much that she didn’t care, as long as they were all together.

It wasn’t until she was twelve that child services came and took them from their home. Being told they would be kept together in foster care for a time, there was a great sense of relief but she knew better than to think it would last long. She knew her two younger sisters would have the most promising chance; they were still young, both cute, and didn’t carry the burden of all that they went through like the rest of them did. Truthfully, Carly never really thought she’d be adopted; she was angry and bitter, at an awkward age near her problematic teenage years, and she expressed that any time someone came to see her. She didn’t want to be away from Kit or her older brothers; she was trying frantically to stay behind with them.

She was taken in by a woman with three other children, all whom had been adopted. Her living conditions weren’t exactly picturesque, living in a three bedroom, cramped apartment on the outskirts of Las Vegas but compared to what she was living in with her mother, it was definitely a step up. The woman, Marta, was tough though; she had strict rules over how Carly should act, what she should wear, when she should go to bed; it felt more like boot camp than a new home. Marta wasn’t as violent as Elise but if Carly acted out in any way, a good whack usually did the trick.

At sixteen, Carly made the decision to drop out of school and study cosmetology. At first Marta wasn’t impressed with her decision but after discussing her options and Carly making mention of helping bring extra income into the home, who was Marta to argue? She’d be ‘pulling her weight’, Carly would say; it was good enough for Marta. She immediately joined into a course in a nearby community college and got her license in a little under a year.

Working part-time in a coffee shop to make ends meet and pay for her cosmetology supplies for a time, she grew close to a woman who visited the shop. She was an older woman, a small boutique owner by the name of Cora, and they grew close. Mornings were spent chatting and, twice a week, the woman would come to work on paperwork for a few hours. It didn’t take long after having met that they began sleeping together; the woman began giving Carly money, hearing limited details about the way Carly grew up. What first started as having fun became a business deal; Monday and Thursday nights were spent with her. The woman began paying for Carly’s schooling and supplies and even helped get Carly a job at a trendy salon downtown.

She had only been working for a few months when news hit that her mother had overdosed. It didn’t come as a shock but after years of not having seen her siblings, she was eager to go to her hearing to see them. Carly cried a lot that day, as hard as she did not to, but it wasn’t at all for the sake of her mother. Seeing the way her younger sisters had changed; clothes impeccable and manners to boot; The twins were scholarly looking, seemingly happy. How could they be happy? –After all that they went through, Carly never thought genuine happiness was in the cards for the Veatch family. She was almost green with envy for them and Kit seemed to be the only one that resembled any sort of similarity. She could always count on him.

With limited money in her pocket after her mother’s death, Carly continued what she had started. She continued working at the salon, moving up to the ranks of one of their best hairdressers, and even moved to a small apartment with the help of her income from her job and with the help of Cora. Everything, for the first time in Carly’s life, seemed normal. She’d never rid herself of the bitterness but she had improved; her mother was dead, she had a job that she enjoyed and had a woman that prayed at her feet.

Carly dated others, under the nose of Cora, but she never made any lasting relationships. The fear of losing them was too much to bear; her mother never being present, her siblings all were taken from her. How was she to ever truly care for someone when it was inevitable in life that they were be taken from her too? It was a bitter way to look at life but, alas, Carly Veatch had grown from bitter girl to bitter woman.

L I F E   D U R I N G   T H E   O U T B R E A K:

The outbreak happened all too quickly. Before she knew it, the city of Las Vegas was under military siege and there was nowhere to go. People were going missing, only to turn back up completely different. It was like Carly was in a daze but, truthfully, she was used to madness. Nights spent in cars, under bridges awaiting her mother’s return from a drug deal or strange men coming into her home to poke around to find her mother; madness followed the Veatch family wherever they went. Being protected by the military, Carly didn’t think it would get too out of hand. It wasn’t until she woke up one morning to hums of vans, the military deserting their post and leaving the population susceptible to the undead that she realized something was truly wrong. Carly immediately went to search for Cora and the two fled the center of the city to a nearby apartment on the outskirts, gathering supplies.

Weeks spent in the apartment, Carly couldn’t help but continue thinking about her siblings. She didn’t really know where they were, if they were still in their original homes, but she decided she’d go searching. Leaving a sleeping Cora behind, she traveled through the city, trying to wrack her brain on their whereabouts, only to come up short. Defeated, she returned home only to find Cora and most of their belongings gone. No note, no sign of warning; all she could tell is that Cora left in a hurry.

After a few days of pulling herself together, Carly left the apartment in hopes of finding other survivors. After a few days of heading north, she came across a small group; they traveled bit by bit, doing whatever they needed to get by. They managed to section off a very small part of a suburban neighborhood and made a society of sorts. Months went by and, finally, Carly thought they might manage to make a new life here. She knew the likelihood of finding her siblings was slim to none and, so, she did her best to move on and continue her life. Survival was something Carly was used to.

L I F E   A F T E R   T H E   O U T B R E A K:

It wasn’t until months later that her small group and society fell apart. Raiders came through, destroying everything they had built and killing people along the way. Managing to barely escape, she was split from the rest of the group and was forced to run further north. She kept going north, in hopes the cold weather would slow the undead down, and came across a few new survivors who mentioned Cheyenne. She entered the town quietly, wanting to make sure she was safe before integrating herself. She found a home on the outskirts, near the destroyed airport. She’s gathered enough supplies from her route to sustain her for a time and she’s shocked at how many residents there were in the small city.

Truthfully, her siblings came into mind at the population, but the thought left as soon as it came. She refused to hold out hope that any of her siblings were there, especially with how far they were from Las Vegas. Instead, Carly’s just trying to keep her head afloat. Losing so many people and not knowing where those she loves has gone, it’s hard to keep optimistic. Instead, she’s slowly reaching out to other survivors to get better acquainted with Cheyenne and those who live there. She’s only been in Cheyenne for a few weeks now and has absolutely no idea that Kit is also in town.

Will getting married affect me being on my parents car insurance? My mom knows we are engaged my dad won't even know that until December. My husband and I just got married yesterday but our ceremony is not until August. I realized today I am on my parents car insurance. Also it's a total lie that women make less money than men. when i waited tables, the women got all the good tips from men. while i generally just got the minimum tip. not only that but sometimes if i was dealing with another male, sometimes they didn't give me a tip at all especially if they were drunk or some scruffy looking truck driver trying to hit on the other girls. But if one of those hot girls waited on them, they would sometimes give them a tip that was more than the food that they ordered! I think it's all bs. and of course completely racist. Why does america allow this? You know in some countries they don't allow women to drive. MAYBE it's because they're bad drivers!!!""

This month we had quite a lot of reading to do. Our books weren’t working in the beginning of class so I ordered them from Amazon and just waited for them to arrive since I have Prime and they get here within a couple days. For this month’s crowdfunding lesson, I chose to evaluate the crowdfunding on Fundable Feast - Crowdfunding for FOOD! because it was actually the first I came across that was way over budget in donations than what was asked for.

As I read over the story and they the updates on through the last update I found that until I got to the last update I didn't have much to say except that I was impressed with the success of this crowdfunding in the amount of time and the directness of it. It was fast and once the goal was hit the platform was changed and continued to grow.

My recommendations to the creator of Fundable Feast are as follow:

during the last update where they tell us it's the last update because they didn't know gofundme doesn't close accounts, next time they should do their research because it just makes the creator look as if they were unprepared or as if they really didn't know what they were getting into.

Do your research before posting online. It shouldn't take you til you get to your last update to let us know your real "website name" being that "fundable feast" could not be trademarked since it was taken

Reading more into Cheryl Clements and where her crowdfunding came from and what it started was interesting. I thought I should learn a little and I found for PieShell founder Cheryl Clements, food is personal. It’s about connection. Growing up, Cheryl spent summers helping her mother run a pie-making business. Aptly named “The Pie Shell”, it was headquartered where all good startups begin: the family’s basement. It was from her mother that Cheryl learned what it takes to build a successful food operation, but more than that, she learned how communities grow around the food that people share. A few years ago, when Cheryl thought of embarking on her own food venture, she saw a crucial need for a crowdfunding platform that addresses the unique challenges of food and beverage entrepreneurs.

Happy Trails Animal Rescue works to go against animal abandonment by making lives better for animals and their families and providing them with love and nurturing homes, as well as rehabilitation to those that need it.

Because we at Happy Trails Animal Rescue believe so much in this, we are hosting a webinar Saturday, March 17th, 2018 at 2PM EST debuting Happy Pooches Grooming at the Poinciana Dog Park, to increase knowledge on pet hygiene and the health risks pets and owners alike can encounter when effort isn’t put into their pets and the affects it has on society.

Getting the information out to the public allows for Happy Trails to create awareness on existing and getting more people involved with their own pets, possibly taking down the percentage of pets being abandoned, getting the message out that when information is applied, and more time is put into these animals then it takes away the possibility of abandonment. More love and time goes into caring for the pet, so loss of the pet would be more of an emotional scar.

The whole point of my campaign is to create awareness through social media. If I can reach one person, that’s already furthering my campaign. Getting the message to the audiences IS the campaign.

During Week 2 we went over outlines and gave feedback to our classmates. Building our where's, our hows, the importance and what you hope the audience gets out of your Webinar, what do you want to accomplish? Anything contrary to that goal should be nixed. Here is what I came up with:

I. Introduction: Be specific about how you intend to introduce the Webinar.

In my webinar I was hoping to be introduced by the host and go into my tell all seminar/webinar on dog health and the how to's on dog grooming. I would be playing the part of host for Happy Trails Animal Rescue and Happy Pooches Grooming, since I went to school for certification/ licensing degree in Professional Pet Grooming / Pet Cosmetology and Health. I asked my neighbor to use her dog as a reference and possibly do a "quick bath demo".

II. Overview: Ask yourself what you hope the audience gets out of your Webinar. And what do you want to accomplish? Anything contrary to that goal should be nixed.

What I want to gain for my audience is the understanding that 30 mins a week can improve the relationship that we have with our pets as well as the growth and respect mutually from owner to pet and vice versa. The more time that you spend grooming, and loving your pet the more respect and trust the pet will have for you as well as their health not declining. The simplicity of it is this (with anything): The more time you put into something or someone the less you want it or them to fail, the more you want them to be around you, and succeed. Thus, the more time you have with your pet, the more love you put into your pet and the more you put into the relationship the less likely that pet will end up in a foster home, or a shelter, or even abandoned in the street.

(What kind of visual aids will work best to get your message across? Remember, the slides act as the appetizer, but they are not the main course. They're there to support your overall message.)

IV. Conclusion: How will you wrap it up?  What is your call to action?  Are you planning to send a follow-up survey to ask participants for feedback?  Will you take questions at the end?

I am planning on wrapping my webinar with open questions relating to the event. I will conclude my talking points and I will be posting a link to a downloadable informational PDF I am preparing. While asking questions I will also ask if anyone attending live wants me to physically show them how to take care of the basics on their own pets (nails, teeth, shampooing). Anything else I'd be able to offer for one on one appointments.

Ultimately what I got out of this class was how to step out of my comfort zone and to do my research. I was able to follow through even though I was uncomfortable with getting in the public but I knew the information so there was nothing for me to be afraid about. 

This class proved to be helpful in that way.
