An Emergency
My first whumpy Night Vale fic put Cecil in the role of sudden caretaker. I just posted the other one before this one haha. An injured person stumbles into the studio, leaving Cecil to attempt to help. Tw: Blood, emeto (brief)
“Dear listeners, may I give an editorial?” said Cecil into the microphone as the rain poured outside. Just then, the door to the recording studio flew open, then slammed shut. Cecil looked up, and saw a teenage boy dash to the back of the room and collapse onto his knees, panting.
“Mister… help…” he cried between gasps.
“Excuse me, dear listeners, but it appears that a young man has stumbled into the studio. And… oh… he needs help… he’s bleeding from a large wound! Night Vale citizens, I’ll see you in a second. Let’s go to the weather.” He quickly flipped a switch to bring in the weather feed. The break was supposed to be much later in the program, but there was an urgent matter at hand.
“Sir,” he said in his calm, smooth voice, kneeling in front of the boy, “what happened?”
“My… arm… something… attacked…” he gasped, “this place… you seem to know… about stuff… this place… seemed safe…”
“I haven’t had to use my class lambda first aid training yet, but there’s a first for everything. You’re right about this being a safe place; take my hand. With your good arm, of course.”
The boy reached out, groaning in pain. He took the hand of the calm announcer and was pulled to his feet. He leaned against Cecil for support as he was brought to the chair at Cecil’s desk.
“You sit right there… keep breathing,” he said in the same cool voice, “I’ve got an emergency kit in the closet. Hopefully the closet wraith isn’t in there today.” He slowly opened the door, ready to close it if the wraith attacked. Luckily, nothing was inside other than the kit, which was made of bright purple canvas and was about the size of a small duffel bag.
“Hold on, this kit is very disorganized…” he said as he put the kit on the table. He glanced at the radio receiver, worried about how much time he had left in the weather break. Maybe he’d have to sign off early if he couldn’t continue the broadcast while administering first aid.
He dug through the bag, looking. He pulled out and threw aside a pair of noise-cancelling headphones, an instant cold compress, a crucifix, a rubber duck, an enamel pin shaped like an opossum, medical chest seals, a turkey baster, a Nokia cell phone, and a tactical tourniquet. “Where is it… where is it…” he mumbled to himself, “aha. Ok, just hold still…”
The radio receiver began to blink, telling Cecil that the radio broadcast had ended. He cursed under his breath and flipped a switch, bringing his microphone close as he snapped on some blue medical gloves and unscrewed the lid of a bottle of saline.
“Welcome back listeners,” he said into the microphone as he took the young man’s left forearm, which was covered in blood, “I’m currently dealing with a bit of an emergency here. A young man has come into the studio injured. I- what bit you?” He turned his attention fully to the boy’s wound, examining it carefully. Teeth marks. Sharp, menacing teeth. Cecil took a large gauze pad and pressed it firmly to the wound.
“I… I don’t know… it just attacked me… walking home from the convenience store…”
“What did it look like? Hold still… ah, I’m still on the air. Night Vale, I’m going to have to sign off early. After approximately seventeen and a half minutes of dead air, we’ll have the popular program, How to Prepare For the Alien Invasion. For now, goodnight, Night Vale- oh God that’s a lot of blood… er, goodnight.” He then flipped the switch on the receiver and focused on his patient.
“Okay… so something attacked you, but you can’t remember what. I’m no doctor, but I’ll ask you a bunch of questions while I pour saline all over your arm and my desk. Oh! Wait! There’s a mixing bowl over in the corner. Never mind!” He quickly ran over and swiped the big metal bowl, then placed it on the desk and laid the boy’s arm over it. Except… now his arm was blue. So was his face. And it wasn’t cyanosis either. The boy was turning a brilliant shade of cerulean blue.
“Oh no! Ohhh no! I gotta call someone!” he quickly reached for the phone kept at his desk. It was an old rotary phone, but on the side of it was a green button. He picked up the receiver and pressed it. It started to ring on the other end. With receiver in one hand, and the other hand on the boy’s carotid artery, tracking his pulse, he waited for it to pick up.
“Sheriff’s secret police, what is your emergency, Night Vale citizen?” said a grumpy female voice.
“Donna, I need an ASU ambulance at the radio station, STAT!” he said, his voice no longer calm.
“…ASU?”
“Advanced Supernatural Unit! You know, the special team! I can only do so much with my lambda class first aid training that took me two months and my upper right back molar to get! And… he just threw up in my wastebasket. Aaaaannd the vomit is a very unnatural shade of cyan. Hurry, for the love of all that is holy, hurry!”
“Right away sir! Right away!” said Donna, before hanging up. Cecil took a long, deep breath as he poured saline over the boy’s wounded arm. The boy flinched in pain.
“I’m sorry, terribly sorry… hold still…” he said calmly. In even dire circumstances, a long deep breath got Cecil back to has calm, cool state. At least on the outside.
Suddenly, the door to the studio was rammed off. In came a team of six medics dressed in full riot gear, bearing a purple cross on the right arm. They all looked at Cecil.
“Not me! Him!”
“We know that…” said one of the paramedics, “is he dangerous?”
“No! He’s really weak.” The medics sprang into action. Two picked him up and placed him on a stretcher, while another flipped on the lights. The two that placed him on the stretcher were now examining the bite.
“Cyanosaurus,” said one gravely. Another opened their bag and pulled out a vial of orange-coloured medicine. Cecil watched as it was quickly loaded into a syringe and injected into the vein of the victim.
“Good call thinking of us,” said one of the medics, “Cyanosaurus bites are nothing to sneeze at.”
“Is he going to be alright?” said Cecil, anxiously. He worried about the kid.
“Well, as long as we skedaddle outta here. See you, Mr. Palmer.” The team gathered around the stretcher and placed their hands on it, and then they disappeared with a pop. Cecil then heard a siren and looked out the window. The ambulance/tank-like vehicle was speeding away.
“Oh dear. Maybe I should warn the listeners about this…”

QuirkWizard Characters: Medoji Kokuō
Character Name: Medoji Kokuō (Sprout Boy King)
Hero Name: The Gardening Hero, Power Plant
Appearance: Kokuo is quite short, only barely scraping by at about four feet and three inches. His soft baby-face, big brown eyes, and neatly done hair makes it hard for people to take him seriously. All these traits make Kokuo seem much younger then he actually is, making it so people often mistake his age.
His hero costume consists of a large, yellow coat, similar to a rain jacket, with white and yellow boots, a white utility belt, and pair of black goggles.
Story:
-His first real encounter with heroism was after his first discovered his Quirk. After he brought his first sprout in for show and tell, he noticed another student had gotten her ball stuck in the tree. He used the sprout to climb up there and push the ball out. The girl was happy she got her ball and it made him feel good. Kokuo liked that. He wanted to make people happy like that little girl.
-A few days later, Kokuo brought the sprout to school again. Some bullies later found him playing with the sprout and took it from him, as Kokuo was a fairly small kid that was easily picked on. A bully popped the head off of this sprout. Kokuo didn't like that. He didn't like to feel that way. He didn't want other people to feel that way.
-After becoming a hero, one of things he tried to gain popularity by appearing on a children's show as a guest character where he would perform acts with his sprouts. He was actually very popular with the kids, making him a recurring character as "Sprout Boy". Even as he is doing more hero work, he has yet to fully lose the name.
Personality:
-Kokuo is soft spoken and has a very welcoming demeanor. He is often friendly with those around them, even to complete strangers, trying to be polite as possible unless in certain circumstances. In spite of this, he has been known to keep to himself and focus on his sprouts. He has a very deep care for his sprouts, treating them like children and giving them praise for their, in spite of their intelligence being more like that of an animal. He has a green house in which he grows the sprouts, which he is always taking care of. He even has a spot near his bed where the sprouts sleep, made up of several dozen socks Kouko got from thrift stores.
-He is quite the pacifist, preferring to specialize in Rescue and Recon heroics and disliking the idea of other people being hurt, though there have been times where that does not apply. Rather oblivious to social norms, and will say weird things without knowing they make people uncomfortable or even annoy. Like one time he told an older hero to calm down for the sake of their blood pressure.
Quirk: Sprout
This Emitter type Quirk that allows the user to produce a special kind of seed. When given enough time, these seeds grow into a small, humanoid, sticky, plant-like creature roughly the size of a doll that have the lifespan of about two months. The user is mentally linked with these creatures, able to psychically give commands and perceive what the creatures take in at a fair distance, making this Quirk useful for scouting and spying. This features is complimented by the creatures’ abilities to climb by sticking to surfaces. However, these creatures are small and not very strong, so using them for direct combat is not a sound move unless the user happens to have a horde on hand to stick to and overwhelm an opponent. These creatures have no real sentience and entirely rely on the user’s commands to function, meaning that the user must micromanage what the plants do. The sprouts also need time to grow, roughly a few days, as well as a suitable environment.
Super Moves:
Gaia Eye: By looking through the eyes of multiple sprouts, it allow Kokuo to greatly enhance his fields of vision for a brief time.
Sprout Spree: In the rare cases that Kokuo gets into combat, he can cause the sprouts to run towards and swarm an opponent, launch onto and biting them. Though this is more a diversionary technique instead of one that would end a fight.
Podling: After experimenting with his Quirk, Kokuo found he as able to produce special seeds. These do take longer to grow and require a special environment, but the sprouts produced come out in a color other then traditional dark green a trait unique to each color. Red: Stronger, able to move entire tools by itself. Blue: Overall more durable, able to withstand harsher environments. Black: A small set of gliders in it’s arm to help it move around. White: Able to absorb other sprouts to grow bigger and stronger. Kukuo does not like to use this sprout, as he sees it as “eating” the other sprouts.
Costume: -The Sprouter: A long, bright yellow coat that is full of pockets that Kouko uses to carry the sprouts around from crime to crime.
-Gardner Belt: A white belt full of small tools that the sprouts may use, such as hammers, screws, and lockpicks.
-Goggles and Headphones: His goggles and noise canceling headphones are meant to help him block out distractions to better focus on what the sprouts see.
-Scuttle Bugs: These decent sized drone is meant to carry the sprouts from one location from another, spread them out over a large area, or take the sprouts somewhere quickly.
Strengths:
-Information Gathering: Given the large amount of sprouts Kouko controls, he has a vast array of spots which he gathers intel from, even in the safety of his own home. And since the sprouts move under his command and are so small, they can cover much more ground then a regular camera. This combined with his sharp focus from his years of training, he can calmly assess a situation and come to a conclusion despite outside interference.
-Likability: Through his sunshiny face and cheerful, mixed with his overall calming demeanor, he gives everyone the idea that everything is okay. It is this trait that makes him useful in Rescue work and very marketable.
Weaknesses:
-Stature: Kouko's small size and weak build means that he cannot last very long in a fight, if even last at all. The most he would be able to do is throw a few weak punches or latch onto someone to try to slow them down.
-Caring: Kouko is actually so nice that it actively detrimental to his work as a hero, especially when it comes to the sprouts. For instance, a strategy that Kouko could implement is to strap bombs to the sprouts and send them to attack villains. But he refuses to so since that would be killing the sprouts, even when he can just grow more later. Another could be that he makes one of the sprouts climb into the mouth of a villain and suffocate them unconscious but he thinks that is too cruel for both parties.
Stats: Power: 1/5 Speed: 1/5 Technique: 4/5 Intelligence: 4/5 Cooperativeness: 5/5
Trivia: -His favorite food is kibi dango. -He is twenty-five years old. -His blood type is AB. -His favorite pastime is playing puzzle games, as they sharpen his mind and it amuses the sprouts. -Regularly reads to his sprouts each night to help them grow. -Is one of the most popular heroes with young children. -He once left the radio on the channel that played the Present Mic segment, hoping the sprouts would like it. He woke up the next day with a broken radio. -He is the unofficial “guy in the chair” of the My Hero Academia Universe.
