All right so little update. I have started constructing a list of movies to watch which involve Molina, and am doing so by checking plot descriptions on Wikipedia going from his filmography. I am writing down any that he can be perceived as a villain. Although, that’s pretty much the progress I’ve got on that front. I haven’t put myself through actually watching the movies yet.
But hey, even though I can’t scrounge up the motivation to actually put myself through movies, I have been doing other things still pertaining to the wonderful actor. First being that I’m watching interview videos, so like late night talk shows, podcasts, people w/ YouTube channels who regularly interview celebrities. Second that I consulted Google (which I really should’ve done from the start tbh).
In particular, I want to see Molina’s range in playing villains so I could try to fathom a guess as to why he played those two villains the way he did. So playing Horvath in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Viggo in Race to the Edge. I have admitted this several times before but I am mostly intrigued in this because I love seeing actors participate in more than one project together. And of course me being me I enjoyed Viggo and Hiccup’s dynamic in RTTE.
For your basic search I tried to find articles on his involvement in Race to the Edge. I managed to find some gems, but not ultimately what I sought. I particularly wanted to find an article where Molina said he played Viggo the way he did because he knew he was working with someone from a previous project. Having worked with Jay Baruchel in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice in a villain/ hero role and then coming to do it once again when being invited onto the cast of Race to the Edge. I want to swear that them working together again held some influence. However judging from what I found, that conclusion is now wavering. Perhaps it can be true, and there isn’t anything I can find. Or Molina performed in his marvelous way, and that is playing a villain to the maximum best. Baruchel being on the other side as Hiccup wasn’t a factor.
I couldn’t find it, but I have some golden quotes for you guys!
“In comparison to his previous voice work in film and television, Alfred singled out the opportunity to play full-on villain Viggo Grimborn as different than anything he’s done before.” -Link to article here
“Once we started creating the character, we started talking to casting about possible people to play the role, and Alfred Molina came up and we were just like, “Would he do it?” And we made him an offer, and he said yes. And he is an amazing dude, he’s the coolest guy on the planet. He’s just so gracious and awesome to work with, and he loves doing his character. He says it every time we’re with him.” -Link to article here
And yes once I finally watch those movies I will get to see if he winds in pet names for other villain roles as he did in the two I mentioned above.
