Thiago was not expecting to be dad. Not now, nor anytime in the future. He knew how he was, and the life he led. Neither of which were suited for parenthood even though since his own father passed the idea of what kind of one he would be refused to leave his head.

Would he be able to give them half as good as a childhood as the one his father gave him? Would he leave them grieving and wondering how much of their father they knew like he did?

Should someone that shot a 15 year old in the foot be trusted with a child at all?

In the end these questions didn’t matter. Because he had a kid now and she was a sentient egg.

Fortunately, his work on the island was much less dangerous than it was back in brazil. So he could bring hope with him on his daily rounds. She seemed to like it a lot, which was a good thing because he wasn’t sure what he would do with her if she didnt other than leave her in the house with cesar but she spent more than enough time with the hacker already.

Before they had learned what liz had been up to and saved hope, thiago had been spending a lot of time with one badboyhalo. After he had saved dapper bad insisted on giving him a gift, which ended up being a whole thing of enchanted gear. He took some of it but he kept a couple pieces of his old set that liz and cesar had enchanted on, and the rest in an unsorted chest somewhere in his room like everything else he couldn’t get rid of.

He kept hanging around bad after that. Mostly because he was a real good source of information on pretty much everything happening on the island, but also because something he said to Thiago once wouldn’t seem to leave his mind.

Bad was asking about what thiago did before the island, around a month into their stay here they decided it would be ok to tell people the truth as long as they didn’t go into too much detail, so he did. Only for bad to reply “why would somebody marked by death want to fight her creatures?”

“What?”

Bad tiled his head like some kind of owl. His pure white eyes staring through thiago from under his hood. “Or at least i think it’s death. Maybe not our goddess but something similar.”

He looked thiago up and down once more. “Do you not feel it?”

The urge to throw off his hoodie and run to the nearest mirror to double check that the symbol of that fucking place was still gone was tempting. But thiago knew he didnt need it. He knew what it was like for his hand to not be his hand and this wasn’t it.

He shook his head, forcing his tongue to move from where it had glued itself to the top of his mouth, “No.”

Bad made a noise of curiosity in response but moved on. Thiago wasn’t sure if it was out of noticing his discomfort or something else entirely but he thanked the change of pace.

Unfortunately, the fact that he even got that bit of information in the first place meant he needed to go back and continue to prod for more

So far hed gotten out of bad that only the rest of team was “marked” like this. Some clearly were by an entity like thiago, cesar and arthur (bad upset about blood), but with joui and liz it was unclear. Same went for the mark itself, which bad described as almost being fuzzy. Like fog was obscuring his vision of it.

He was pretty sure that this was all bad knew, but bad was bad and liked to be a tricky little shit. One of his coworkers once wrote an article just for fun about creatures from folklore across the world. He was bored on his break and read it which was a good thing because he was not unconvinced that bad wasnt some sort of Irish fae creature. It definitely wouldn’t be the strangest thing a person was on the island (that was etoiles).

Even if bad didnt know anything else about their team, he definitely knew a lot about what happened on island, Especially when it came to politics, or as liz liked to call it, a telenovela pretending to be politics. Which was a blessing in disguise as it made writing about it much less boring on thiago’s part.

Hope was with him today since her quests had already been completed for the week. They bounced across the map as he handed out the latest information about the islands happenings as well as gathered it.

Cellbit and roier were off being sickeningly romantic somewhere and hope asked very politely if she could go say hi to him. Not that thiago would ever say to no to something asked as sweetly as that, he told her yes since Cellbit was technically also her dad even if it was only like 5% since he helped in the investigation to find her.

They then headed to pierre’s to restock on some potions, only to find him and maximus… maybe arguing? Thiago wasnt really sure but it could have also been flirting, or manipulation. It could go many many different ways with those two and honestly even though it was his job to know, thiago didnt wanna know. Neither did he want hope to have to witness it. So he quickly sweeped her up into his arms and turned back around to the teleporter.

She gave him a look of silent curiosity but didn’t ask. He was thankful for it today as opposed to usual worriedness. She had been alone in one spot for so long, and had so much curiosity about the world. Thaigo (and the rest for the team) wanted her to be cautious of the what she was getting into yes, but he also wanted her to feel safe enough to be able to run up to a flower she liked without asking if it was ok first.

Deciding to foster her curiosity at the cost of having to try and find a child friendly way to explain whatever the fuck pierre and max had going on, he told her that they were having a private conversation that he didnt want to interrupt. Hope, who knew all about private conversations because of her secretive ass parents, nodded seriously at this and thaigo took a mental note to explain to her at some point that not all private conversations were matters of life and death.

Next they headed to bad’s, who thaigo knew had a good stock of potions he wouldn’t mind missing if it meant keeping an egg safe. He wasnt there and a look at the map told him he was off on some adventure with dapper most likely in search of creature that the kid wanted to tame.

There was a couple other people awake but he really didnt feel like crossing thousands of blocks to go and find them, so instead the two wandered about spawn. Hope taking the lead and investigating the different buildings up close. She already knew at this point that her pais and mae where not the people to ask about how crafting materials worked and seemed happy just to silently investigate.

In the past he would have expected it to be a good break from taking care of a kid, a time to collect his thoughts. Instead he just watched her and his heart felt warm. No thoughts of the what he was gonna write about next, or how everyone back in brazil was doing drifted through his head. All he could focus on was the way hope would walk up to block, completely transfixed by it, bend down to get a look at it better, maybe tilt her head or touch it lightly before moving on to the next one.

Or at least it was all he could focus on till a sound caught his attention. Mentally, he praised the fact that his still functioning ear worked perfectly if not better than that before turning to look in the direction of the sound. In it’s place he saw “charlie” slimecicle teleporting off somewhere.

This was odd for a couple of reasons. The first being that slime did not wake up often. The second was that when he did he usually hanged around big groups of people and the third was that thiago wasnt sure where he got enough exp to teleport in the first place.

Ok, maybe that last one was a stretch but still. Call it investogators intuition or whatever you want but there was something odd happening here and thaigo wanted to know what.

A light tug on his pants brought him out of his head. He read hope’s sign pai, who was that?

“He’s another islander my dear” he replied

She broke the sign before placing down another, Where is he going?

“Most likely home”

Hope stared at him. It was a stare she most definitely learned from cesar and liz because it screamed bullshit

“He really could be going home,” hope’s stare persisted in intensity “buuuuuuuuut your instinct is right. Theres something fishy about this. I feel it too”

Are you gonna go check? she didnt have to write the and can i come for thiago to know she was thinking it.

“Yep. Do you wanna go teleport to pai cellbits and go hang out with him and tio roier while i do?”

I can go there if you want.

He frowned. A sentence like that was the hope equivalent of saying no. She was just too afraid to say that was what she actually wanted.

Still. There was a possibility, however slim, that whatever awaited them on the other side of that waystone was dangerous. If something ever happened to her and thiago knew he could have prevented it he wasnt sure what he would do with himself outside of that it wasn’t good.

He had a enough innocent peoples blood on his hands already, but to have a child’s?

You don’t know if there were any children in the holy cradle, a voice whispered. It swirled around his ears and even though the non-functioning one was well non-functioning, he swore he could almost hear in it and yet you burned them all the same.

Now wasn’t the time for thoughts like this. Hope was still waiting for a reply and who knew what slime was doing.

“You can come with if you promise you’ll teleport away when i tell you too”

Hope beamed up at him nodding vigorously before placing a sign down quickly writing I promise! And then beginning to run over to the waystone excitedly.

“Woah woah woah slow down my dear!” He called out after her. Once he caught up he added “let me go first and hold my hand the whole time.”

Trying to contain her excitement hope gave one strong nod. It seemed to be an attempt at showing she was serious.

Smiling at this and taking her hand into his, thiago and hope teleported to charlie’s base

There wasn’t much there outside of a small shack which thiago assumed was Charlie’s house. The two investigating the outside area a bit before thiago used his still functioning ear to listen to the door. After hearing nothing inside, the two carefully proceeded to enter the building with thiago leading the way.

He didnt notice anything odd at first glance until hope gently tugged his hand in the direction of something, a small opening made of dirt.

Traveling into it, they found a large cavern filled with various plants and some sort of train system. Ignoring it, thiago and hope stealthily made their way down till they could see charlie standing in front of what seemed to be. a house. Only, he wasn’t alone.

There was an egg with him. One that thiago hadn’t seen before.

Grabbing a sign of hopes he had stored away he wrote out do you know them? Before breaking it and passing the back sign to hope.

No, Was the response he got. So not another test subject egg, which meant considering how Charlie was treating this egg (with warmth and excitement), they were most likely Charlie’s egg.

Only issue was that Charlie’s egg, juanaflippa if thiago remembered right, had died months ago.

“Stay right here,” thiago whispered to hope before giving a light kiss to her head and letting go of her hand. “I’ll be right back.”

Hope nodded and stayed in her spot as thiago got closer and focused his eyes on the outline of this egg. It was times like this that he missed the range of his gun but sword and shield would have to do.

The dead don’t come back. Thiago had known this as fact since the day he learned about the “airplane crash.” But it wasn’t till he joined the order that he learned the second half of the statement.

The dead don’t come back, so when they do. It’s not them anymore. Whether that meant they were a hallucination or a creature, thiago wasn’t sure. What he was sure of was the fact that he wouldn’t let slime be killed by whatever was pretending to wear his child’s face.

Thiago jumped down ready to strike but just as he did, the egg ran back into the house with Charlie sprinting after them, leaving thiago’s sword stuck in the ground. Cursing, he ran after them, only to see the egg disappear into specks of code as Charlie cried out for it.

Code meant code monsters. Thiago was not prepared for code monsters, he was prepared for paranormal bullshit even though none had ever appeared on this island before.

Regardless, he needed to write all of this down while it was still fresh on his mind. It didn’t matter if this wasn’t paranormal, it was still dangerous even if that danger had momentarily passed.

So, thiago turned and quietly walked out the house, back to hope and then the two teleported back home.

Pai, hope wrote upon arriving what was that?

Thiago bite his lip. God what he wouldn’t give for a cigarette right now.

“We’ll figure it out.” He crouched down to her level “So for now let’s not worry about it. Okay my dear?”

Worry crossed over hope’s face for a split second, and it landed sharp like a stab in thiago’s chest.

“This scar?” Arnaldo said pointing at a long scar that wrapped around his upper arm. Usually it was hidden by long sleeve shirts but he had rolled those up to be able to kneed the dough of the bread he was making, “It’s just from a stunt that i messed up once. Nothing to worry about my dear”

Thiago took a deep breath in. No nicotine hit his lungs but the oxygen worked just fine. “How about this? I’ll let you know everything new i learn about this case. After all i need an expert on eggs, and who’s a better expert than the best egg on the island?”

Hope looked down at her feet bashfully, but with a glow of praise, “you promise?”

Extending out his pinky finger, thiago smiled gently, “of course my dear.”

Hope wrapped her own around it, and the promise was sealed.

Viajante - What are moments that make you smile?

i think all the moments between arthur kaiser and joui honestly. the domestic nature between all of them. that love they all held for each other and they were always ALWAYS there for one another. i always think back to you know kaisers attacks and joui & arthur comforting him and kaiser taking a photo of them both so he could see them smile all the time. and man. the canon info of joui going over and cooking for ivette, arthur, and kaiser japanese & brazilian cuisines. and that it was either hit or miss on whether joui burnt it. and you know that bliss between the three and their little family. i think about all of jouis little jealous moments if someone stole away kaiser or arthurs affections. i think about that one photo kaiser drew on. i think about how arthur had lost so much in osnf and he still built up these bonds with people and he gained a new family! and i think about all the shared cigarettes between kaiser & arthur and i think about joui my body is a temple jouki only smoking if its with arthur or kaiser. i think about how kaiser could only look arthur and joui in the eyes. and i think about how they were each others rocks

hmmmmm you know right now i’d say. its very close between two creatures but the one that takes first place is O Viajante. terrifying. INTENSE. those are scenes that i will never forget because the whole additional aspect the creature brought it was. unforgettable. definitely some of my favorite combats to date ive watched in ordem.

omg this is such a fun question

kaiser would be so tryhard when it comes to pvp he’d play on sooo many servers to train he’d love doing shit with strategy and learning how to best kill people. he’d probably have some anonymous reputation online as “Angel of the Night” where no one knows who he is but they all know that when hes there theyre all doomed. he WILL SWEEP. i imagine he has a dark looking skin with like a cloak or something. kinda bbh vibe but all black perhaps

but then when arthur suggests to do a multiplayer world hes so down and its funny cause this sorta infamous pvp god playing with two pretty indifferent players: arthur and joui.

arthur would be decent hes not as good at pvp like kaiser but hes good with the controls and he knows how to play which is the most important part. he takes more of a leadership role with gathering resources and making super efficient farms for the other two to never worry about anything. he’d probably also build their house but its not like hes an incredible builder its just a regular shack but its their regular shack<3 they all have their beds next to each other

which is where we get to joui. he’d be the one begging arthur to collect dyes in their colors like red, green, purple so all their beds are cute and together. he’d be. pretty shit with controls and. everything. he doesnt really understand the game or the point he only agreed to play because he didnt want to miss out on arthur kaiser time. the fomo. so thats how he gets himself involved into this “minecraft” shit. all he does really is follow arthur or kaiser around on their adventures. arthur would probably give joui instructions like collect all the stones with black stuff thts coal and joui would actually do good at that. if hes given a mission he’ll complete it smoothly. kaiser likes trying to train joui but he’s a longgg way from being a pro pvp player like him but kaiser encourages him and tries to make him understand how critting works. joui and kaiser probably go out at night to fight mobs together to get specific resources arthur needs and joui probably dies a couple times but he doesnt back down

they end up having a pretty nice world and maybe with a few months of playing joui can actually hold his ground. kaiser collects flowers to put around their shack and arthur starts wanting to add mods and. theyre happy. they play any free time they have off missions.

Here are the Gintama Hc’s as promised. You actually did surprise me, I was 100% sure that under the 5 requested characters would be Shinsuke.

Yandere Gintama Hc's

Sakata Gintoki

🍨He lazes around a lot and is known to get excited to see random beautiful women. Chances are that he brushes his initial feelings off as something similar for his darling. He doesn’t take his emotions seriously and hangs around you with this conviction. It takes him a good while before he realizes that this might be more than a random crush and that’s when Gintoki suddenly pulls back. He’s suddenly scared. His whole ridiculous personality is a way to cope with his trauma and he feels insecure all of a sudden, isn’t sure if he wants to risk love. All of a sudden Gintoki is more distant and unsure around you, sometimes even downright rude and sadistic with his remarks he makes. He’s aware at one point and is even more afraid of his darker emotions, tries to make himself as unattractive as he can so his darling leaves him before anything can happen. He could never make you happy after all. He’s broke, lazy and doubts in his capacity to protect those he loves after Shoyo’s death.

🍨Gintoki is heartbroken though whenever he has to push you away even if he tries to hide it behind his childish facade. Sometimes he appears to be more thoughtful and serious though, a distant look in his eyes. Desperate attempts to push you out of his mind fail miserably and instead he has a whiplash effect. The more he tries to forget you, the more you consume his mind and his heart hurts with longing he knows he shouldn’t have. Gintoki is due to his past trauma extremely protective and most likely ends up weaseling his way somehow back to you even if just via stalking. He can’t really forgive himself for his mistakes of the past nor for his obsession but he could never accept his darling getting hurt either if he can prevent it. Whilst the silver-haired male might appear dumb sometimes, he’s actually quite good if he decides to manipulate you. He’s just not the type you’d expect it from and does it so discreetly with his comments and behavior that you barely notice.

🍨There’s a possessive side inside of the former Joui rebel, something Gintoki tries to tone down as much as he can. Jealousy ends up being a way where he lets his lingering emotions shine through since he slips up. Admittedly, he often ends up acting more like a bratty child than a grown man but that is because he doesn’t want his s/o to realize initially that he likes them nor does he want them to see his less childish side. He’s sarcastic, blunt and downright ridicules someone, is occasionally even petty enough to bring Kagura and Shinpachi along since chaos will be ensured and so it doesn’t look like he’s the only one acting strange. In an established relationship he acts differently, not shy to throw an arm around you, be more touchy and give the other person a forced smile, asking who they might be and not sparing them from his sarcasm. He sometimes still acts like a damn whiny child though who ridicules himself and the other person too.

🍨He was called White Yaksha for a reason and looking into the Anime, he snaps when someone seriously harms his s/o. He just loves you so goddamn much, feels occasionally like he doesn’t even deserve you due to dwelling insecurities and fears to be traumatized somehow again. His district is a wild one, Gintoki knows that. There are certain ruffians lurking around corners. He usually threatens people with showing them a bit of his strength and skills which might just be enough to scare them, not to mention that you’re loved by all his friends too. If someone actually hurts his darling, Gintoki loses his shit for a while. He’s deadly silent and just attacks without a word. Chances are that he’s completely blinded by his rage, can’t think clearly and if his opponent is strong and skilled enough, they might manage to flee somehow even if not unharmed. Gintoki is not vengeful but this is one of few times where he itches for revenge.

🍨Being a part of it and being the unofficial fourth member of Odd Jobs means that you can fight in your very own ways. He doesn’t want to disrespect that yet he frets for your safety and when a real crisis arrives, he almost begs you to stay away or at least don’t wander around alone and instead stay with one of his friends. He trusts his friends, knows that they’re strong and spirited. I’d say Gintoki wouldn’t kidnap his s/o simply because he can’t. Where is he supposed to hide them anyways? He lives basically together with Shinpachi and Kagura and probably lacks money to provide you with the things you would need if he would permanently take you. Instead he has another shameless method which is somehow ending up invading your space when he feels like it. Otose, Catherine and his friends often scold him for leeching off on you like this because he makes himself at home in your house and even if he acts like the usual jerk, Gintoki believes their words.

🍨Sort of selfish when it comes to his beloved sweet things but he probably ends up mellowing out enough to share them with you if he’s in a good mood, which he is mostly when he is with you. It’s likely that he manages to do nothing to help you with yet somehow he does. He often lazes around and nags to you when you ask him for a favor yet somehow he manages to do it even if he manages to get in all sort of problems beforehand. Gintoki does a lot behind the scenes which you don’t even know about unless it is mentioned to you. He handles things his own ways after all. Being in a relationship with him means having to endure everything with him so Gintoki feels simultaneously bad for dragging you into all of the troubles as well as feeling grateful for enduring it. When he’s drunk he most likely laments about the fact that he’s too broke to have a partner and even ends up admitting among all of the whining that he sometimes thinks that he doesn’t deserve you.

Hijikata Toshiro

🚬Toshiro is extremely stubborn once he gains feelings for his darling, veils all of them behind a annoyed and rude mask which often leads to you believing that he just plainly dislikes you. Just like Gintoki, Hijikata feels too insecure due to his own past. He couldn’t protect his brother, pushed Mitsuba, his first true love, away and thinks that his lifestyle isn’t fitting for you since you deserve someone who can make you happy. He believes that avoiding you is the best yet similar to his addiction of chain smoking and mayonnaise, Hijikata’s weakness is quitting his obsession. No matter how much he tries, you claw at his mind with immense force and somehow seeing you being happy with someone else leads to a jealous and possessive reaction which he tries to burn down by fleeing from the scene and smoking multiple cigarettes. He is a strict individual with a planned schedule and the piled up stress he has because he can’t forget you leads him to slip ups.

🚬He’s desperate and his mask sometimes cracks yet he refuses to let anyone find out about his growing feelings. He reaches a low point when he starts stalking you, patrols a lot around the district where you live in. Toshiro is very protective and places immense importance into getting rid of all trouble makers and problems in your streets so you are at least safe from troubles. He never dares to initiate small talks unless the situation calls for it and acts tsunderish when you end up conversing with him a bit. Yet such small and seemingly insignificant encounters and moments stay in his mind and he obsessively recalls even smaller details you probably forgot within the same day. A relationship takes awhile but reveals some of Toshiro’s not so charming aspects. He’s very controlling and strict, has an established set of rules he believes to be needed in order to have a harmonious and safe love life with him and can be very possessive at times. He’s not deaf and is a bit open to listen to your wishes but has troubles shaking this behavior of his off.

🚬He’d never want to admit to anyone when he feels jealous and always denies it if someone asks him yet he can be quite ridiculous with his attempts to hide it. From excessive smoking, ugly smiles and silent glares, hidden violence, petty and very obvious ‘accidents’ such as spilling his beverage, letting his sword slip, trip someone up to coughing to disrupt an interaction that went on too long or was too intimate for his taste. Really everyone can sense and see his boiling jealousy at one point yet he continues to deny it vehemently even if he ends up interrogating you later on about the person and the relationship between you two. He refrains from PDA or too much affection in public since he wants to keep his image yet he probably will end up pulling you closer and glare at someone who won’t get a hint. If someone bluntly flirts with his s/o and makes inappropriate comments, chances are that he pulls his sword out and asks them if they want to be killed by him.

🚬He abuses his reputation as the Vice-Commander of the Shinsengumi quite a bit and he probably doesn’t feel bad for it. Hijikata is sometimes a bit paranoid in regards of your safety and his overprotective and possessive side tends to trigger the darker aspect of his love. He doesn’t feel guilty when he cuts someone down who hurt you nor does he feel bad by arresting someone and putting them into prison if they troubled you. If he gives someone a warning, he expects them to either understand the situation and back off or bear the consequences. He’s named the Demon Vice-Commander for a good reason and isn’t above being a bit sadistic when it comes to manhandling everyone he labels as threats ruthlessly.

🚬Hijikata ends up memorizing your schedule so he knows most of the time where you are and what you’re doing and it gives him a feeling of relief. He’s paranoid, fears rebels might kidnap you and use you against him. When something is going on, he either pesters his darling to stay at home or give him a call or message him every hour so he knows if they’re fine. Forgetting it once can already end in him worrying and spamming you only to scold you harshly for concerning him over nothing as soon as he reaches you. You know that something is messed up when Hijikata ends up snapping enough to turn a bit more delusional and start defending his actions of locking you inside the house or even using his police position to force you into house arrest by threatening to take you to the police if you don’t do as he says. Whilst he won’t go as far as kidnapping, he is willing to restrict your freedom under certain circumstances.

🚬The other Shinsengumi members eventually find out, either because you two are at this point partners or because someone, let’s be honest and say it’s Sougo, had their suspicions, spied on Hijikata and spilled everything to the other members. Kondo congratulates him, Sougo just wants to mess with Hijikata by using you which makes Hijikata on the other hand a bit paranoid. Sougo acting nice and trying to befriend you is a red flag yet Sougo always manages to make Toshiro look like the crazy one in the end. Which is why Toshiro probably doesn’t really want his s/o over at headquarters too often. It’s likely that Toshiro feels bad for Sougo though because he accepted you but rejected Mitsuba back then, fears that Okita might dislike you secretly for that reason and apologizes for it since you shouldn’t have to suffer because of him. Toshiro is privately more affectionate than he is whilst under people as soon as he has relaxed enough.

Okita Sougo

😈Sougo is a certified sadist so he gives his darling a little taste of hell every time he appears. I’d actually label him as lucid so he guesses that he is obsessed with his darling but he winds up simply not caring about it after some time. Due to his sadistic nature he’s surprisingly clingy, he stalks you and follows you only so he can bump into you by accident when he feels like it and make fun of you a bit. It’s likely that he’s gone too far a couple of times already which made you angry and brought you to tears yet you’re the only one who snaps since Sougo stays calm, the usual deadpanned expression on his face. Sougo is oddly enough aware when he’s gone too far though and most likely gives his s/o some time to calm down, times where he’s somewhat nice. He has always some ulterior motives behind nice gestures though so as soon as you’ve somewhat recovered, the cycle begins again.

😈Sougo is manipulative and cruel with his words. He manages to twist your own words against you and make them sound like something entirely else. Guilt is always put on you and worst is that you’re the only one who always loses their self-control which only leads to enhanced mocking from his side where he chides you for letting your temper get the better of you. Sougo is enough of a jerk to search for some dirty secrets and if you threaten to leave him and tell the Shinsengumi about him, he simply holds them above your head and tells you with a little smirk on his face that he’ll let everyone know about it. He’s a possessive bastard so he won’t allow his darling to leave him and maybe that steams from the fact that he already lost his sister Mitsuba. Despite that all, Okita is also protective. Granted, he doesn’t allow others to hurt you since you’re pretty much his so he’s the only one who has the right to do anything to you. He also knows about the discrimination against humans from aliens and about the rebels so you have a potential target on your back due to being his partner.

😈Sougo is already the undefeated champion when it comes to humiliating and ridiculing others but he’s extremely terrible when he is jealous. He never outright says that he’s jealous but his rude and sarcastic comments increase. He either mercilessly picks the one apart who makes him jealous, and in the worst cases he actually uses his sword to give them a minor injury as a warning, or he completely humiliates you if you show any reaction of being flattered or enjoying the attention. He ruins your chances with anyone of you haven’t accepted him yet by scaring competition or spreading rumors about you which make you look more unappealing and even lies to others that you two are a thing or have already slept together, might even forcefully kiss you. If he knows that you harbor feelings, he might even try to make you jealous in return by flirting with someone else as a sort of revenge just to see you going a bit possessive. He wants an apology if he got the impression that you enjoyed everything and you might have to literally go down on your knees.

😈A walking menace, a living devil. Everyone is screwed when they trigger Sougo and he is especially happy to display his sadistic tendencies when someone messes with his s/o. We’ve already established that he sees them as his possession so no one else has the right to touch them if they don’t want to lose their hands. Even someone courageous tends to run when Okita pulls out his sword and has that excited glint in his eyes, his insane bullying is enough to make a grown man ball his eyes out. If someone hurts you though, they’ll probably lose a limb or two and might barely make it out alive. If someone tries to kill you, they’re dead within the blink of an eye as soon as Sougo has tracked them down. He shows zero hesitation and mercy for anyone, they’re all cut down.

😈Surprise, surprise but Okita Sougo won’t kidnap his darling. He doesn’t see the need too, mainly because he thinks that it would be too much work to find a place, keep it a secret from the other members of the Shinsengumi and because you might wreck havoc in his house as some sort of way to blow off some steam. You’d make too much trouble. There is a tight leash the Shinsengumi member keeps on you anyways so that’s the second main reason he doesn’t feel the need to abduct you. A sadistic part of him thinks your reactions as long as you think that you are free are funnier anyways, especially when he can ridicule you in front of people. Your facial expression when you find him in your house where he makes himself at home is also worth gold.

😈He expresses his affection the only way he really can and that is sadly by annoying and teasing you until you go insane. Sougo just can’t help it. He punishes his s/o too by gagging them, tying them up or simply revealing a secret that you don’t want anyone to know. Somehow he always finds a way where you have to crawl back to him since he’s the only one willing to help, if you repay his kindness of course. Probably buys a pretty collar to wear so everyone knows who you belong too and calls you pet names. Treats his darling somewhat endearingly when they did good for him and punishes them when they made troubles. Okita just can’t shake that side of him completely off and it probably needs a darling with extreme patience for him to be more genuine with his affection.

Kamui

👊Kamui is quite the sadist himself and that is mainly to blame for the fact that his darling is a itty bitty human. They’re weak and Kamui despises weakness yet that clashes with this fatal attraction he feels for them which results in this mean streak of his. He’s constantly mocking his darling, scares them with his brute strength and just bullies them for their weakness, all with this closed-eyes smile on his face. Very possessive and violent because even if he dislikes your weakness, he can’t bring himself to kill you since you stir something up inside of him. The simplest solution is keeping you and he’s willing to use all means to fulfill that goal of his. Kamui is physically violent just as much, willing to leave bruises or break bones as methods to teach you to not run away and know your place, which is under him.

👊The Yato man is also fully convinced that someone weak like you needs someone strong like him to protect you. The earth was overrun and conquered by the Amanto because humanity didn’t have the strength to fend for themselves, his darling is no different. They should be grateful that he decided to take them under his wing. He expects gratitude and wants you to admit that without him you would die within a few days and he rubs it especially under your nose when he did save you from someone or something. He attempts to make you worship him a bit and really see him as your savior. Somewhere deep down he just wants to feel like he can actually protect someone since he hates himself for having failed to save his mother and sever the emotional tie with his family.

👊Kamui is trigger-happy and in the best case he swings a fist and sends someone flying through the walls. It’s likely that he just looks down on anyone he doesn’t recognize as strong which applies to a good bunch of living creatures in the universe. His disgustingly possessive side forbids anyone besides maybe Abuto to really interact for longer than a few seconds with his darling. He normally pulls you closer by your hip with a bruising grip, the usual smile on his face before he uses his terrifying strength to smash their face with only one hit beyond repair. You aren’t safe from him either, in the worst cases he’s yanked you by your hair to expose your neck only to shower it with blue and purple hickies to show anyone that you belong to someone already, him.

👊He enjoys fights already so he enjoys it just as much to beat someone who flirted with you or tried to save you. There is less fun when someone actually got through him and managed to hurt you though since Kamui already failed to protect his family once so that stirs this unpleasant feeling of failure up. Of weakness. In that case his smile falters and he stares at his opponent with murderous eyes and if he sees his darling being nearly killed right in front of his eyes, he completely snaps and lets his Yato blood take control. He can neither control his searing wrath nor his strength and probably snaps out covered in sticky and red liquid with a mess of smashed bones and flesh in front of him. A body that has been annihilated by him. Kamui is spiteful after, blames you for your own weakness even if he looks out more for you and still cares for injuries.

👊Kamui kidnaps his darling at an early point. He’s a space criminal after all and travels through space. He can’t leave you behind to roam unprotected and freely on earth. He doesn’t tell anyone about his plans either. Kamui simply walks one day to you, greets you with his smile and tells you that you’ll come with him before he knocks you out. Abuto can stare flabbergasted at best when the captain returns with a human over his shoulders and announces that he’ll take them with him. When you wake up, you have a massive headache accompanied by a huge bump on your head. You’re shackled and alone in a room until Kamui eventually returns and explains with a slight grin on his face that you belong to him from now on.

👊He can’t regulate his strength at times so even if he tries to be affectionate, chances are that he ends up bruising you with his touches. Kamui doesn’t feel too bad about it in retrospect though, sees it as signs that you belong to him. By the way, the man is very touchy with his s/o and shameless about it too. Abuto is pretty much the only one from his crew he actually really trusts and Abuto is the one who winds up feeling bad for you somehow. When Kamui is in a bad mood and hurts you, it’s Abuto who tries to explain why the boss is acting like he does. Kamui doesn’t want his s/o to know about his past since it’s his weakness and he fears that after all the talk of him being the only one who can protect you, you might make fun of him. It’s a sensitive topic in general for him.

Yoshida Shoyo

💔He’s a split personality of Utsuro who has managed to gain control of the body and has resigned to a peaceful life where he can teach children. What Shoyo doesn’t expect is falling in love and yet he does. His mind often wanders to you as he wonders what you’re doing at the moment and a blissful, small smile graces his lips as he gets lost in thoughts of you. His students catch him sometimes and wind up teasing him and asking him who his crush is. Shoyo wavers with his decision to be with you though since he isn’t who you might think he is. He’s immortal and his past selves have slaughtered thousands. He doesn’t know if he deserves his darling since the Shoka Sonjuku is a way for him to atone for his past sins. The man is very protective though, asks you constantly how you’re doing and reminds you to take care of yourself. He’s observant, usually senses when something stresses you and quickly offers his help.

💔He’s good in remembering the little things about you and constantly surprises you with it. He’s caring, very caring, often brings you small treats and presents he can afford or made himself to make you happy. Shoyo can be just like a mother hen, very coddling. Despite his attempts to hide his affection, it is extremely hard for him since his heart hurts with longing. He’s never loved someone before in his entire life but now he has his adorable students and you and his heart is bursting with joy and infatuation. The way he occasionally brushes his hands through your hair or the way he looks at you are telltale signs of his feelings for you. Due to his very kind nature he might appear to be very manipulative from time to time simply because he draws people to himself because of his philosophy and kindness, his darling probably never suspects him and that makes him feel guilty. He knows that his love tips into the unhealthy kind.

💔Honestly, Yoshida is far too patient and lenient to fall easily into the temptation of jealousy. It isn’t like he doesn’t feel the small needle of pain when he sees his darling happy with someone else but he’s good when it comes to suppressing his dark urges and wants his darling happy. The moment his students find out they’ll probably be the ones who try to interfere as they fall into a shipping fever. They want that you get together with their sensei and Yoshida scolds them later on for behaving that way in front of you and making you and the other person uncomfortable even if he knows that their intentions weren’t bad. If he is in a established relationship with you, he feels reassured and trusts you. He isn’t even really hostile against someone else if they understand the hint when he laces his fingers with yours and presses a kiss against your temple. If someone still won’t take a hint, he is more sturdy and reminds them that he’s already your partner and that you’re happy with him. He might not even be completely mad if his students come to his help in this case too even if he still belittles them later on.

💔He’s killed for centuries without an end, has become wary to take lives again. Yoshida desires a peaceful life even if he still won’t hesitate to grab a sword and defend those he cares about. He wants to solve problems without having to resort to murdering someone so he usually threatens and warns someone he actually sees as a serious threat despite his more kindhearted nature. He wants them away from you if they torment you physically or psychologically and don’t have any intentions to stop and/or apologize. If a situation escalates into a fight, he opts to hold back and knock the person out or immobile them somehow. He holds back too because let’s face it, if he would go all out that person would be dead. If he somehow succumbs to his darker emotions and nearly kills someone or really murders them, he probably feels a bit guilty and ashamed that he lost control just like that.

💔He’d never abduct his darling or restrict them unless they’re injured and need to rest. You probably end up assisting him or even teaching in his private school yourself so a big time of the day you’re anyways with him and his students. Considering the fact that Shoyo is a really good partner, it might be a mutually agreed decision to live together at one point in the relationship. Shoyo is joyful with that decision since it means that he can see you nearly the whole day. He provides you with everything he can give you too out of sheer gratitude for returning his feelings and overwhelming love. You never really understand since you don’t know his past and Shoyo isn’t sure if he really wants you to know either out of underlying fear that you’ll leave him if you’d ever find out the truth.

💔Has to keep the bunch of students away that swarm around you as soon as he introduces you to them, especially Gintoki, Takasugi and Katsura. Although he loves watching the children and you interacting since all the people who make him happy are together. Shoyo is most likely starved for affection due to never having been loved before but tries to control it a bit. He greatly enjoys it when his darling tells him that they love him, care for him or show him physical affection. He wants to marry his darling really badly too and just do everything he can to make them feel loved and happy. The constant fear deep inside his core that Utsuro might one day return stays with him though.

If Bansai was the one who helped Takasugi get back up from the lowest point in his life, then Takasugi was the one who gave him a purpose.

Look at Bansai’s face in these panels.

He looks disillusioned in these panels. Disillusioned, bitter, even angry in some sections. Almost lifeless, compared to how we know him in the present day.

We don’t know too much about Bansai’s backstory before meeting Takasugi, but we can put some things together. Around this time, he was already called hitokiri, which literally means “manslayer” or “man-cutter” (人斬 - 人 “person” + 斬 “to slay/cut”). He’s based off of Kawakami Gensai, one of the four renowned assassins of the Bakumatsu period, who grew angry with the shogunate after they entered into a series of unequal treaties that essentially forced the country to cede land, pay reparations, and open up to Western powers. A lot of assassinations have been attributed to him, but only one - his murder of a Japanese politician Sakuma Shozan - can be proven.

I guess the Gintama spin on this would be that he was angry with the shogunate for the Kansei purge, surrendering to the Amanto, quelling the war and the rebels by force, and, in his eyes and many others too, giving up on the samurai who protected it for as long as they could. He doesn’t like the hitokiri title - he denies it, either because he’s a wanted man (although he definitely calculated the risk of going out in public beforehand) or because he’s not proud of it - but clearly he’s done what he’s needed to in order to fight back against shogunate actions.

He was testing Takasugi here with Matako, even though he definitely wanted to save her. He heard stories about Takasugi and Joui 4 before this and probably also heard about how fast the country abandoned them, how they went from war heroes to war criminals after the war ended. And now he meets Takasugi for the first time, who’s also disillusioned, bitter, and carrying anger with him (even if it’s a different kind of anger), and Bansai wants to see what he’ll do. How will a samurai who’s been labeled a wanted criminal and is being hunted by authorities, who has been abandoned by the country, react when given the opportunity to save someone? And, like he says later, what kind of man is Takasugi Shinsuke?

Takasugi saves her, and they go to prison. And then they have this exchange.

Takasugi, who talks about destroying the world, saved a girl who was captured for being seen with him instead of abandoning her. He passed Bansai’s test.

And then Takasugi asks him this.

The anime shows him laugh a little bit after this part, but in the manga he doesn't laugh at all. He’s wondering if Takasugi is being serious, and whether or not it would be worth it. And so he tests him again.

Takasugi says some big words here for a war criminal with no army, no funding, and no support, and Bansai’s well aware of it. But he believes, or at least is willing to believe, in what Takasugi’s capable of, even if all it looks like in the moment is “boasting” or a “grand lie.”

And then the prison break happens.

To me, this is where he really starts believing in Takasugi’s words for sure. This is where he realizes that Takasugi isn’t boasting or selling him some grand lie about crushing the country; he’s actually going to do it. They break out of prison with Matako, Takechi, and the rest of the imprisoned Joui, and the rest is history.

Like Nizou says in the Benizakura arc, Takasugi has a light that draws people to him. Before meeting him, it’s probably safe to say that Bansai was an unsheathed, disorganized sword - skilled but angry, bitter, and killing people without a long-term goal in mind or a cause to fight for. He might have gone on doing it forever, but Takasugi recruited him, helped him point his sword towards the future, and gave him a purpose.

i think at this point, he considers mutsu practically family and he would be absolutely destroyed if she died. we never see him get super emotional when someone died, but he did state that the main reason he left the joui army was because he couldn't watch any more of his comrades die, and right now there's no one closer to him than her.

Gender Headcanon: a cis guy open to crossdressing

A ship I have with said character: Bantaka my lifeblood. Romantic or queerplatonic, Bansai and Shinsuke just make the best life partners to me, having kept each other company for ten years and built something (kiheitai 2.0) together between them. They'd indulge in your good o' fashioned sappy romance tropes, like running away together and dying for each other a la Romeo and Juliet, whether they're 17 or 70. In my version of happy ending for them, I think eventually they'd put their arms away, settle down and attempt to live a peaceful life in Edo/Tokyo.

A BROTP I have with said character: with Matako or Shinpachi! I'd love to see more of Matako being the one to question Shinsuke's methods while Bansai being like "but it's Shinsuke. I love him and I trust him unconditionally" like the way they are in odds or evens.

Shinpachi would be so thrilled by the eventual Tsunpo reveal and he would ask Bansai to sign every last piece of Otsuu paraphernalia he owns

A NOTP I have with said character: I don't ship BanMata.

A random headcanon: Bansai being autistic and his headphones and shades being accommodations Shinsuke helped him acquired is a hill I would die on. I also headcanon that during his time as a hitokiri, he would help out joui patriots and their families as much as he could by going after corrupt bakufu officials and landlords who terrorized and persecuted them.

General Opinion over said character: He's so underrated. Why are there so little art of him. Why did they waste his potential. Seriously, this guy gets deliberately written out of action all the time. And all this implication that he's a mysterious character with major things about him that remains untold got slam dunked into the wastebin after sorachi killed him for no good reason.

(would really love to see bansai have fun with the rest of joui 4. shinsuke gets jealous, but he can't stay green anymore after they invited him as well)

At the small elementary school in Jouy-sous-les-Côtes, in northeastern France, Gisèle Marc knew the rumor about her: that her parents were not her real parents, and her real mother must have been a whore. Women who were said to have slept with occupying soldiers—“horizontal collaborators”—had their heads shaved and were publicly shamed by angry crowds. In the schoolyard, children jeered at those who were said to be born of “unknown fathers.”

The idea that Gisèle might have been abandoned by someone of ill repute made her terribly ashamed. At the age of 10, she gathered her courage and confronted her mother, who told her the truth: We adopted you when you were 4 years old; you spoke German, but now you are French. Gisèle and her mother hardly ever talked about it again.

Gisèle found her adoption file, hidden in a drawer in her parents’ room, and from time to time she snuck a look at it. It contained little information. When she was 18, she burned it on the stove. “I said to myself, If I want to live, I have to get rid of all this,” she told me.

Gisèle is 79 now, and she does not regret burning the papers. For a time, she was able to put aside questions about her origins. At 17, she took a job in a children’s home and hospital and realized she had found her calling. She spent her career working mainly in day-care centers, and eventually founded her own.In 1972, she married Justin Niango, a chemistry student from the Ivory Coast. They bought an old hotel just behind Stanislas Square in Nancy and turned it into a house.

Gisèle held off on telling her children that she had been adopted, because she was worried that the revelation might weaken their bonds with her parents. Sometimes, though, the secret “burned a bit.” She knew she would share it eventually.

When her mother died, in 2004, she gathered her children and told them. They were shocked, and asked questions whose answers she did not know.

After years of denial, Gisèle longed to find those answers. She remembered the name and place of birth that had been listed in her burned adoption file: Gisela Magula, born in Bar-le-Duc, in northeastern France. She started her research there,and went on to writeto the Arolsen Archives, the international center on Nazi persecution, in Germany, to ask if there was any mention of her in the organization’s extensive records.

In March 2005, Gisèle received a reply: She had not been born in Bar-le-Duc after all, but near Liège, Belgium, in a Nazi maternity home at the Château de Wégimont. That home and others like it had been set up by the SS, an elite corps of Nazi soldiers, under the umbrella of the Lebensborn association, through which the regime sought to encourage the birth of babies of “good blood” in order to hasten its ultimate goal of Aryan racial purity.

Everything Gisèle believed about herself wavered. The family she’d spent her adult life defending against racism, she realized, descended from one of history’s darkest racial projects.

Nazism was an ideology of destruction, one that held as its primary aim the elimination of “inferior races.” But another, equally fervent aspect of the Nazi credo was focused on an imagined form of restoration: As soon as they came to power, the Nazis set out to produce a new generation of pure-blooded Germans. The Lebensborn association was a key part of this plan. Established in 1935 under the auspices of the SS, it was intended to encourage procreation among members of the Aryan race by providing birthing mothers with comfort, financial support, and, when necessary, secrecy. The association’s headquarters were in Munich, in the former villa of the writer Thomas Mann, who had left Germany in 1933. In 1936, it opened its first maternity home, in nearby Steinhöring.

The SS was overseen by Heinrich Himmler, who hoped that its elite soldiers would serve as a racial vanguard for a revitalized Germanity. “As far as the value of our blood and the numbers of our population are concerned, we are dying out,” he said in a 1931 address to the SS. “We are called upon to establish foundations so that the next generation can make history.” An agronomist by training, Himmler supervised this undertaking with a level of attention that bordered on voyeurism; initially, all SS leaders’ marriage applications had to be referred to him. All were expected to reproduce: Four children was considered “the minimum amount … for a good sound marriage.” Himmler had no problem with childbearing outside marriage, and criticized the Catholic Church’s hostility toward illegitimate births. Raising “illegitimate or orphaned children of good blood” should be an “accepted custom,” Himmler wrote. In 1939, he issued an order that called on members of the SS to procreate wherever they could, including with women to whom they were not married.

According to Himmler, the Lebensborn homes were intended “primarily for the brides and wives of our young SS men, and secondarily for illegitimate mothers of good blood.” But the latter were, in practice, a majority. Far from the eyes of the world, single mothers could give birth in Lebensborn homes and, if they wanted to, abandon their babies, who would receive the best care before being placed in an adoptive family—so long as the biological parents met the racial criteria (photos of both were required). Early applicants had to meet a height requirement, and had to prove their racial and medical fitness going back two generations. The German historian Georg Lilienthal found that initially, fewer than half of the women who applied were accepted.

The women also received a daily “ideological education,” according to the historian Lisa Pine. Some of the babies were given a non-Christian first name by Lebensborn staff in a ceremony inspired by old Nordic customs. Under a Nazi flag and a portrait of the führer, in front of a congregation, the master of ceremonies would hold an SS dagger over the newborn and recite this creed: “We take you into our community as a limb of our body. You shall grow up in our protection and bring honor to your name, pride to your brotherhood, and inextinguishable glory to your race.” Through this ceremony, they believed, the child became a member of the SS clan, forever linked to the Reich.

By October 11, 1943, when Gisèle was born, there were about 16 Lebensborn facilities throughout Nazi-occupied Europe. She arrived four days too late to have Himmler as her godfather; the Reichsführer personally sponsored the children who shared his birthday, October 7.

Gisèle rejects the idea that there’s a connection between her career and her early years spent in a very different kind of day care—she chose her path, after all, long before she knew where she had really come from.

Still, she doesn’t minimize the fact that her life story is inextricable from the history of Nazism. She has often wondered how her origins might shape what she calls her “internal memory”: She has always been terribly afraid of military trucks, trains, and leather boots. She cannot bear to hear babies crying; at her day care, she would often leave her office to comfort the little ones. She worries, too, that she somehow passed something evil on to her children through her genes.

A chance encounter helped Gisèle trace her origins. A few months after her mother’s death, just as she began her research, her cousin went to a funeral where a tall man with blond hair gave a eulogy for the departed, a teacher who had believed in him. The man, Walter Beausert, talked about his arrival in France as a child, in a convoy from Germany. Gisèle’s cousin, who was old enough to remember Gisèle’s adoption and knew that she’d come from Germany, struck up a conversation with Beausert after the funeral. Her cousin wondered whether Gisèle might have been in the same convoy.

The story that Gisèle has pieced together is still full of holes, but she now knows the identity of her biological mother. Marguerite Magula was a Hungarian woman who immigrated to Brussels with her parents and sister in 1926. Marguerite eventually went to Germany to work, with her mother and sister, in a garment factory in Saarbrücken. When she got pregnant, in 1943, she ran away and returned to Brussels. Dorothee Schmitz-Köster, the author of Lifelong Lebensborn: The Desired Children of the SS and What Became of Them, told me thatby then, the Lebensborn program had somewhat loosened its criteria: A fervent belief in National Socialism could make up for being short, as Marguerite was, though an Aryan certificate, a health certificate, and a certificate of hereditary health were still mandatory for both parents.

Gisèle’s feelings toward Marguerite have changed over time. When she learned from the Steinhöring archives that some mothers had searched for their children after the war, trying to get them back, Gisèle came to hate her. “She never sought me out,” Gisèle said. “I have no compassion, nothing; quite the opposite. That’s not a mother.” A postwar document denying Marguerite’s request for Hungarian citizenship (she and her sister were then stateless) mentions her “bad life.” Had Gisèle and Marguerite met, maybe she could have explained. But Marguerite died in 2001, just a few years before Gisèle began her search.

Gisèle has been less curious about the identity of her father; she imagines him as the stereotype of an SS officer—undoubtedly “a bastard.”

In 2009, Gisèle met a half brother, Claude, born after the war, who was raised by Marguerite. They still visit each other from time to time. Claude, she said, describes their mother as having mistreated him. He once told Gisèle she was lucky not to have grown up with their mother.

Like Gisèle, Walter Beausert owed the discovery of his origins to chance. At the birth of his first daughter, Valérie, in 1966, the midwife stared at Beausert, then 22 years old. Behind his helmet of straight blond hair, she noticed his light-blue eyes—one of them was a glass eye that never closed—and remembered the 17 small children who had arrived by train at the hospital in Commercy in 1946. “I think you come from Germany,” she said to him. It confirmed something Walter had always suspected.

In 1994, while filming the television report about the Lebensborn, Walter traveled to the site of the former Lebensborn home at the Château de Wégimont, where he heard from locals about a woman named Rita, a Lebensborn cook, who had had a baby boy named Walter. As German soldiers tried to take Walter away from Rita, the story went, he was dropped and his left eye was injured. This was the lead the grown-up Walter had been waiting for—Rita, he came to believe, was his mother.

“Except that’s not true,” Valérie said. “We met this Rita; we know who this Walter is. He’s not my father. But he didn’t want to hear anything about it. He said Rita had a second child who was also named Walter. I told him, ‘This doesn’t make any sense.’ His denial was pathological.”

Their son, Lâm, was born with one brown eye and one blue eye. One eye—the blue one—presented with a deficiency. The doctor identified a congenital abnormality that could cause blindness, which Valérie also carried and had passed on to him. Her father’s glass eye, she realized, was not the result of an injury at all. “When my son had to undergo an operation, I told my father, ‘You see, it is congenital.’” Her father was outraged, Valérie recalled: “Nonsense! You can’t say that!”

It wasn’t just that Walter wanted to believe that his glass eye was the result of his biological mother’s struggle to protect him from German soldiers; he was also terrified of disease, of being “a carrier of defects,” Valérie said, and went to great lengths to prove his superior strength and stoicism. One day, while he was chopping wood, his friend’s chainsaw ripped through a trunk, cutting both of Walter’s calves to the bone. Walter made himself two tourniquets and drove home. Valérie remembers him walking up the stairs as if nothing had happened, both legs bloody, and calmly asking her to call an ambulance.

Walter found others’ fragility unbearable. When his wife, Valérie’s mother, was diagnosed with cancer, Valérie sometimes kept him out of her room. “He would tell her, ‘You have to fight; you must eat; that’s how you get better.’ It was a form of psychological abuse.”

To Valérie, this trait in her father was a troubling echo of the Nazi emphasis on physical superiority. “A young German must be as swift as a greyhound, as tough as leather, and as hard as Krupp steel,” Hitler proclaimed in 1935. Lebensborn children born with conditions such as Down syndrome, cleft lip, or clubfoot were thrown out of the homes, or killed.

Sometimes Valérie worries about what she, and her son, might have inherited from her father. “When I see some of my son’s character traits—a little tough, a little authoritarian—which could belong to my father but also to me, I always have this fleeting anxiety: Did we pass along something of the Lebensborn?”

In the summer of 1945, Life magazine published a report, with pictures by the photographer Robert Capa, on the “super babies” of a Lebensborn home. “The Hohenhorst bastards of Himmler’s men are blue-eyed, flaxen-haired and pig fat,” one caption read. “Too much porridge, plenty of sunlight have made this Nazi baby in hand-knitted suit and bootees so fat and healthy that he completely fills his over-sized carriage,” read another. “Grown pig fat under care and overstuffing Nazi nurses, they now pose to the Allies a problem yet to be solved.” The tone gives an idea of the level of resentment that Americans and Europeans felt in 1945 toward those who were spared the war’s horrors—even toddlers.

But not all Lebensborn babies were blue-eyed, flaxen haired, or even, for that matter, “pig fat.” Likely because of the lack of bonding with a single caregiver, some children were developmentally delayed. Medical exams performed after the war indicate that Walter was underweight. A document from French social workers describes Gisèle as having had tantrums upon her arrival in France.

For Gisèle and her fellow Lebensborn children, the Allies’ liberation of Belgium marked the beginning of a journey—in wicker cradles wedged in the back of military trucks—through a devastated Europe. In The Factory of Perfect Children, the French journalist Boris Thiolay recounts thatGerman soldiers in retreat left the Lebensborn home near Liège on September 1, 1944, with about 20 toddlers. After several stops in Germany and Poland, the children found themselves at the very first Lebensborn, in Steinhöring. Walter Beausert had ended up there too.

In Steinhöring, SS officials were crammed together with children and pregnant women from other institutions that were now closed. Boxes of documents cluttered the corridors of the maternity ward, where women continued to give birth.

When the news of Hitler’s death broke, officials burned as many documents as they could. Thiolay describes the goals of this purge: “The birth registers, the identity of the children, the fathers, the organization chart, the names of the people in charge: everything must disappear. The evidence of the Lebensborn’s very existence must be removed.”But the Nazis’ obsession with documents made fully expunging the records an impossible task—there were too many.

A few days after Hitler’s death, a small detachment of U.S. soldiers arrived in Steinhöring, and the children changed hands: The Americans were responsible for them now.

The older children were encouraged to help the younger ones. A picture shows three small blond girls gently combing babies’ hair and spoon-feeding them as if they were playing with dolls. Another photo shows a group of babies on a checkered comforter under the watch of the American social worker Lillian Robbins and a Sister of Mercy. In the corner, sitting on the floor away from the other toddlers, is little Walter, one eye closed, smiling at the photographer.

The UNRRA staff tried to find the children’s surviving family members, if there were any, though some children had no recorded identity. Some were given an approximate birth date. This was perhaps what happened with Walter Beausert, whose official date of birth falls on a suspicious, though of course possible, date: January 1, 1944. His birthplace was unknown, but, likely because he was believed to have previously lived at a Lebensborn home in France, UNRRA staff decided to send him there from Indersdorf.

As for young Gisela, her file showed that she was born in “Wégimont” (omitting the château’s full name), which staff believed to be a French town. She joined Walter in the convoy bound for the Meuse region of France, whose population had never recovered from World War I. Gisela became Gisèle, and her life as a French child began.

Were they “survivors,” these toddlers who owed their existence to Nazi birth policy, who ate fresh fruit and porridge while other babies were gassed or starved to death?

On October 10, 1947, in Nuremberg, four Lebensborn leaders appeared before a special American military tribunal as part of the Subsequent Nuremberg Trials, which prosecuted ancillary Nazi leaders. Three charges were brought against them: crimes against humanity, war crimes, and membership in a criminal organization. Three out of the four leaders were found guilty of the third charge. But the tribunal established that the Lebensborn had been only a “welfare institution.” The children, therefore, were not considered victims.

Until the 1970s, Lebensborn homes were treated as a rumor, or described as stud farms where SS men mated with racially selected women. The first book to be published about Lebensborn came out in France in 1975 and contributed to this misunderstanding by suggesting that the “nurses” were in fact selected to be breeding mothers. Georg Lilienthal wrote the first academic work on the program, in 1986.

In the nine years the program lasted, at least 9,200 children were born in the homes. Some 1,200 were born in Norway, which had the most SS maternity homes outside Germany. After the war, these children, along with women who were suspected of having had affairs with German soldiers, were ostracized. Some of these women were even interned in camps. France had only one Lebensborn home, which operated for less than a year, so Lebensborn children there were far less likely to be recognized as such.

In 2011, Gisèle and Walter traveled to Indersdorf to join the annual commemoration held there by former residents of UNRRA’s reception center; Gisèle described the organizers as “Jewish children,” just as she still refers to herself as a “child of the Lebensborn.” “It was extraordinary” tobe included in the ceremony, she told me. While she was in Indersdorf, she went to visit Dachau twice. She felt she needed to confront what she might have believed in had she been raised in an SS family.

Together, Gisèle and Walter started the Association for the Memory of Child Victims of the Lebensborn in 2016, an effort to encourage public recognition of Lebensborn children as victims of war.

Walter, for his part, became obsessed with gaining acceptance from the Jewish community. He studied the Torah and identified as a Zionist. “He used to celebrate Jewish holidays,” Valérie remembers. “His Jewish friends were a great help to my father. To tell him, ‘You are also a victim, Walter’ was the greatest gift.”

He died in 2021, wearing a Star of David around his neck. He had been in poor health, and living in a retirement home. A few days earlier, for the first time in his life, he had admitted that maybe Rita was not his mother.

Valérie has kept a comb that still contains her father’s hair. One day, she hopes to find out what secrets his DNA might contain.

Gisèle’s husband, Justin, died 15 years ago, but she still spends nearly every winter in Africa, in his village, where she is “famous,” she said, in part because residents saw her on TV, in a segment about the Lebensborn.

At home in Nancy, she keeps a photograph of her biological mother on display, though she doesn’t look at it much anymore. “It’s my heritage. I don’t want to forget that I was born from this woman,” she told me. All she wants now is for her story to be told. “I’m modest,” she joked. “I want the whole world to know about it.”

Her son Gabriel married a German woman, and her grandchildren speak German, a language she has completely forgotten. “It shows that history goes on,” she said. Her son Matthieu is working on a book about the Lebensborn, and with his wife, Camille, he wrote a play about the children’s story. Recently, I attended a reading at a small theater in Paris. I watched Gisèle, seated next to her daughter Virginie, as she watched her own story acted out.

“They say history is written by the victors,” one actor said. “But most of all, it’s written by the adults.” Gisèle discreetly dried her tears behind her glasses.
