Shout outs to the unknown person who wrote episode summaries for the attempt to localize Utena as “Ursula’s Kiss,” who around episode 14 has clearly gotten so invested they stop using the localized names they were proposing, around episode 22 starts writing multi-paragraph summaries instead of a couple sentences or even a single paragraph, and by the end is just describing it shot for shot in obvious emotional devastation.

Shout outs to that person because I wanted a line from the third scene and just ended up doing the same thing. Episode 39 just fucking does that to you.

AN: Written for Day 3 of Whumptober: A HAIR’S BREADTH FROM DEATH

There is a moment when the thoughtless immortality of youth transforms into the cold certainty of death. If you asked Utena when, she wouldn’t be able to place it. Somewhere between cold steel thrust in her back and the breaking of bones in her fist against the stone coffin door.

She walks: stumbling step after stumbling step. Every step burns. Overhead, flying steel roars in her ears. How can Anthy take it, a thousand swords piercing, when Utena can barely walk from one?

She knows she will die, but she still reaches out with broken fingers for one last goodbye.

AN: Thought I’d try my hand at some drabbles for whumptober to try and get myself back in the groove of writing.
