°*TouMaki - Advent Calendar 2018*° DAY 12 - “SLEIGH” by @somecallmemichelle
Mod’s Note:  @somecallmemichelle returns to warm us up with some well-deserved and long due Christmas passion, because we all enjoy our seasonal fluff of course, but there’s nothing wrong in spicing it up a bit, every now and then! ;) Thank you so much for this second entry of yours, @somecallmemichelle!
Author’s Note: “I hadn’t actually ever written something quite as intense as this. I prefer my hand holding and my gentle kisses, though honestly Toumaki has a way to get me to broaden my horizons. In the old fanfic lingo this would be called a ‘lime’, I believe. Proceed with caution.”
It’s the way those tender hands touch and prod all over Toudou’s body that makes him fall backwards and knock over the sleigh. Though it’s set to leave a mark, and it wasn’t exactly a graceful fall, unlike everything he does, Toudou doesn’t seem to mind, his arms only grasping forward, pushing, pulling, trying to grab onto Makishima. Makishima who’s playing it rough, apparently, and who only smirks as he sees Toudou sprawled on the floor. Well, some parts of him are on the floor, while the body lays hung over the tipped over sleigh, giving him access. Something he pretty much enjoys as he dives in with the kisses. Makishima is nothing if not methodical and efficient, the same hands he uses for sewing, sewing until he can no longer feel his fingers, and to grip the handle of a bicycle are also delicate enough to oh so carefully curve Toudou’s curves. To tease, and make him whimper, begging, hoping for more. Something Makishima is glad to oblige.
It’s not exactly a comfortable position, and perhaps in his excitement pushing him down might have been something to condemn, but Makishima can see through Toudou’s excited little pants that he doesn’t care. His eyes hold within them a silent request, a desperate plea that Makishima doesn’t take long to understand. Being careful not to grab onto the long locks - because that’s a deal breaker, and Toudou would never dream hurting his oh so wonderful lover and boyfriend, but yet still grabbing onto the back of his neck, Toudou can’t help himself, he pushes the other boy, the other man towards him.
It simultaneously fills him with as much joy as conquering the peak, and it’s seemingly as riding. Their bodies fitting together so that Makishima is on top, and though they’re covered in layers, layers upon layers, that don’t allow for a more contact, they can feel their breathes touching, as their lips meet, and Makishima’s hands roam all around.
This is no time for sneers, or funny little comments teasing the other, this is a moment of raw passion where Toudou, even if he had tried, couldn’t say anything. The way that tongue roams through the edge of his ear, and goes down, through his lips, his neck, edging down, and down, passing through every exposed piece of skin…and some which are yet covered.  Though careful, Makishima’s pace spoke to how much he desired Toudou, as, despite the fact his movements were slow and controlled, there was a frantic passing to the whole thing. It should have been a paradox, something that wasn’t meant to happen, but despite that it’s a moment where they feel so close they care not about how long it’s taking, or how indecent the touch could very well be…Lost in that single moment, where they need one another. A moment where nothing else really matters.
It’s soft little whispers, it’s caresses that go nowhere, but make them feel complete. It’s a touch that simultaneously refers them the notion of desire, something that urges them forward, something that they need so much they can barely grasp it, and the notion of love. Hot, gentle love, it’s the words pronounced in between kisses and touches, it’s the “I love you” and the “I love you too”
At a certain point Toudou doesn’t see anymore, as he has closed his eyes. He just loses himself in the pleasure of Makishima’s roaming hands, for he’s everything that matters at this point. He doesn’t quite move, too lost in pleasure. He only groans and moans, and bites his lip, and tells Makishima what he’s doing is right and correct and for a moment all else can be forgotten. They lose notion of time, and place, as they seemingly meld together into one. Not quite going there, because there’s time, and there’s a place for it, but so indecently groping, feeling, touching and listening it might as well be more intense, more delicate, and more personal. There’s no closer position for them to be. Positioned over the overturned sleigh, lying down together exchanging kisses.
It’s rough, and it’s intense,  and it’s delicate all at the same time. And Toudou can’t help but think that this is probably as close to perfection as the moment can come. Enjoying his boyfriend, his words, his breath, his body. Feeling it rub against all the right spots, and feeling just content. Happy, like nothing else matters. It’s nice, and he’d probably not mind if it lasted forever, but at a certain point it stops. Makishima, who’s sweaty, and bothered, and also very much in a compromising position stops him.
“I think…we should move this to the room”, he whispers, taking the time to use his breath for the first time that afternoon not to tickle Toudou’s nose, or neck, but rather to whisper a complete sentence. Other than I love you, which he has repeated with quite some frequency. Toudou at first refuses to move, possibly inebriated with all the love and pleasure he had been receiving. He aches with need. He desires release more than anything, and yet his eyebrows raise, his eyelashes flutter, and his dopey smile gives way to a questioning one. “Why, Maki! This is just perfect as it is…”, it’s the same lazy grumbles and refusal to get up that plagues their mornings together, when Makishima goes to do his job, and Toudou turns around and mumbles for five minutes. Makishima would think that what with his family owning and working at an inn, he’d be accustomed to an early rise but that’s not really the case. It’s one of those little annoyances that Maki has with Toudou that seem so inconsequential given how much he loves him. Makishima pushes a hand through Toudou’s navel, which had been revealed by the rather vigorous activities they had done earlier. Tickling it, he gently gets Toudou up. He’s groggy, but, an absolute rarity when he’s forced to get up from a comfortable position, not grumpy. In fact he still maintains his smile as he finally moves. The words “you’ll make it worth my while”, can be heard, barely perceptible, but still audible, by Makishima. He smiles, an impish smile, a smirk of confidence. He’ll make it worth his while indeed. Toudou moves to leave, but Makishima discreetly stays behind, though the sleigh, a decorative item had fallen, there’s no need to leave it as such. Turning he straightens it. A sleigh of passion indeed. He can’t help but think.

So I think I acidentally caused a flame war on someone else's comment section? I'm sorry, what do I do?
I like leaving huge, composed comments that take me like half an hour to write. In fact it's something that makes sense to me, your fic entertained me during an entire afternoon the least I can do is sum up my thoughts as I go (so 2-3 lines per chapter - mostly wondering about plot developments) or thank you for the experience at the end. (that's when you get those 20-30 line comments expressing how much I loved it).
It used to be that I used the Sandwich method of concrit, you know, I put in a little bit of "I absolutely loved this but thought that could have been done better. However this was even better than that thought it could-ve...-" until I started to notice the shift in fandom where constructive criticism is great and appreciated - but if an author wants it they'll request it in their A/N or summaries (As I've said a dozen times in the past on this sub, I'm autistic so it actually had to be pointed out to me, point blank).
Well, whatever, I started changing my reviews to be more "praise" than "bite" so to speak, only a couple days ago I received a reply to one of my comments. Now as someone who very rarely replies to comments (I have anxiety in regards to opening up and the thought of replying myself makes me feel ill) I didn't really find the delay weird but then I read the comment.
> Nobody fucking asked you. Don’t give advice unless you’re asked. No one wants to read all this bullshit.
Now given this was a reader and not the author I choose not to reply. I don't want to create drama around the situation and I'm a big believer that a story's comments should be somewhat related to it, and not politics or whatever.
The problem is that the comment around my comment and that reply quickly spiraled. From other readers telling them that "there was no need for such a reaction, c'mon they make some good points" to the guy doubling down with "I bet if I were to read his bullshit stories they'd be filled with the same shit".
And throughout all of this all I can think about is the poor author, who surely wakes up to comments on their story only for it to be this petty, internet dramatic argument in the level of edgy fifth graders. It's ao3 so I can't message the author to apologise, but at this point I'm afraid that deleting my comment won't stop shit because the guy's already fighting other people that aren't me and it goes beyond that.
What do I do? Is this my fault?

Has one of your stories gained an unexpected bump in views out of the blue?
This is more of a rhetorical question, but I am puzzled. I don't write this with the intent to brag, just wondering if it ever happened to you and if so how.
So like most writers I am obsessed with the little "Stats" page on ao3. I check it two or three times every week and I play with the settings, comparing stories across the fandoms or in the same fandom.
I don't do this, by the way, to see what works and what doesn't. While I know some pairings and fandoms will leave me with more views and kudos I just whatever I desire, it's pure folley, just stroking my ego.
Anyway one of my stories had settled into the low 400's in terms of views. It was at around 420 to 450 after about a year? It still got two or three views each week but I truly hadn't expected it to gain traction out of nowhere.
Over the last two months, that is since Ends of July/Beginnings of August it has slowly but surely picked up steam. It has gotten Kudos, views, and while no comments yet it has become my most popular story sitting at over 1400 views.
Look, I know that ultimately numbers don't matter and what matters is I enjoy writing and what I wrote. Much like Wordcount seeing it rise is nice but not a goal unto itself.
However I am simply perplexed at where the views come from. I am guessing that someone recommended the fic somewhere, however I've looked at the usual places and can't find it anywhere. It's not on my fandom's recs for fanfics on TV TROPES. It's not anywhere on tumblr (at least by searching for my username or name of fic), and reddit has it amidst a compilation of fics, but it was over a year ago.
My question is two fold. First of has it ever happened to you? A chapter, or maybe a oneshot that starts towering over others, just gaining views out of nowhere and if so how and when? And also, do you think it's possible it was recommended in a private community? I know very well I'm not the best at searching on tumblr or google or whatever, but I'm putting the question up in the air, could it have been on a Discord, or Facebook group or something?
Thank you for reading this, and please don't hesitate to share your experiences. I want to hear about the good feels, and the confused looks at numbers. I want you to tell me all about it.

The author's fics are so good...but she's a total jerk
In one of my fandoms there's someone whose work is comparable if not better than any book I've read. Her stories are better than the original book, and I adore them beyond words. They're stuff I reread frequently and can count them amidst my favorite pieces of writing.
But that's not exactly something I feel good about. In the past I've defended being able to enjoy someone's work no matter how crappy they are, but I'm starting to think that to be impossible.
She does a lot of things that are repreheensible. A new author (literally second story they ever posted) asked for her help and she wrote a public blog post about how she has no time for amateurs and beggars, despite the fact fanfic is by the very definition amateur. Someone built on a plot thread she came up, a headcanon, and she went to that person's comment section to rip them a new one for "plagiarism".
Heck, it gets even worse. I won't go into full detail on everything she's done, and of course I'm not going to name names, but I've done my best to step away from her. Though I've reviewed some of her earlier chapters, I have taken to simply stop commenting.
It's not that I don't like her writing, I do! I like her writing far more than I probably should. But I don't like her, or at least her conceited attitude she displays online.
I've taken to downloading her finished fics and reading them guiltily. I don't know what to do. I know I should probably quit reading her stuff, but every time she posts a chapter I'm drawn to it.
I want your opinion, how would you deal with this situation? What would you do? Quit cold turkey? Attempt to bring her to reason? I'm pretty well respected within this (smallish) fandom, and she has no beef with me, but I don't want to cause drama. Should I try?
Thoughts appreciated. Thank you!

[TouMaki Advent Calendar 2018] - Recap Post -
“First things first: °*MERRY CHRISTMAS*°, everyone!
Tumblr media
Now, moving to more serious things: in this last month, for the second time this year and for the second year in a row, we were able to bring new TouMaki content into our small corner of fandom for 24 uninterrupted days! Yay! I don’t know if you realize what a terrific result this is and what it means not only to me personally, but for the TouMaki fandom in general: scrolling the tag and seeing a new fic and/or fanart every day is... amazing, comforting and (as a creator myself) really, really motivating. Unfortunately, in the end I wasn’t able to give my own contribution this year, but my hands freakin’ itch to write right now, which is a feeling I was sorely missing and which is back only thanks to you guys.
Therefore, let me express my biggest THANKS to all the talented and enthusiastic creators who chose to be part of the team this year and literally brought this Advent Calendar to life: I owe you guys SO MUCH, you’re a joy to work with and if I could reach through the screen and hug every single one of you, I’d do it in a heartbeat.  I’m deeply sorry if I sometimes came out a bit harsh in our conversations: I’m a curt, practical person who sometimes forgets how to English politely - my apologies on that department, it was nothing personal, I was just busy and probably frustrated by my job.
Now, on to something more technical: I have created a new Collection on AO3 called “TouMaki_FandomEvents” where I will gather, through dedicated Sub-Collections, all the TouMaki events I have moderated so far and, therefore, all the entries created for those events that are currently available on AO3. If you would like your work to be featured on that platform, please publish your fic/art on AO3 and put the event it was made for in the tags (i.e.: “toumaki advent calendar 2018″, “toumaki month 2018″, and so on): I will find it and add it to the appointed Collection. If you don’t have an AO3 account but would like one, drop me a line: I have invitations to spare.
Last thing and then I’ll leave you to the Advent Calendar recap: in January I will start focusing on the TouMaki Month for 2019, which as far as I’m concerned will be held (please refer to this post) - details will go up in due time, but in the meantime if you have proposals and/or ideas to submit and/or would like to be part of the team again, my chatbox is always open!
Thanks again for having made all of this possible: I might be the one who puts together these things, but I wouldn’t go anywhere if you guys weren’t so eager to participate and support these initiatives! Contributors and readers are fandom’s lifeblood - I’m merely an instrument here!
And now, a quick recap of the entries: make sure to show these amazing people the appreciation they deserve!

Gifting NSFW Fics?
I must admit I don't know how big of a deal this actually is. I have no idea if, when visiting a writer's profile on AO3 they actually check the fanfics gifted to them. After all, if you're on their profile you're looking for more of their writing style, or ship, or fandom, right? Gifts can be random, or have nothing to do with what the author writes.
Much like going link diving in Wikipedia or Tv Tropes, where one ends up reading about a random topic, I enjoy the rabbit hole that is following an author's gift fics, then the profile of that person and so forth. It's, I feel the equivalent of going after favorites on fanfiction dot net.
I say this for a bit of context, because, maybe no one else does it, but I definitively notice it. I like seeing connections, threads linking authors and eventually I end up discovering some hidden gem or diamond in the rough I would have never because they either undertag or overtag.
Ironically enough though about 20+ of my stories are gift fics, I don't really receive many gift fics of my own. I have 2 or 3? And they're all stuff I deeply appreciate and have saved up, and stuff that sits admist my favorite writing, because it was written for me, thinking about me, and the pure act of friendship and care put into making the day of this dorky girl - it still makes her smile months later.
Anyway, in order for this story to make sense you must understand I also have a few alts. Alts for specific fandoms, and specific content, and ships. It's not that I'm ashamed or afraid of posting those stories, which I very much care and put a great deal of effort into it, but if I posted it in my main account, it'd mean being blacklisted by some in the fandom, no matter who I were writing about.
Anyway, some time ago I received an e-mail notification saying that I got a gift fic on that alt. That confuses me, but super rare as they are gift fanfics are still something exciting, so I pop it open, start reading and uh....
It was nsfw, very much so, it was pure smut, porn without plot. I recognised the author as someone who I had sparked a conversation on a ship fic in that alt, as they shipped it as well.
The gift fic wasn't something I was expecting like I said, and though the gesture was, without a doubt nice and thoughtful I can't help but feel somewhat weirded out. As problematic as the ship is (according to the fandom) my fics are all very G, or, at most pg 13, there's nothing more than that sweet innocence from escapism from real life.
I don't know how to feel. I feel flattered, of course, that that discussion (which extended for 10+ comments) meant so much and inspired them. I feel grateful too, in a way.
But then I feel somewhat uncomfortable. Not with the sex itself, it's not how I write the characters, but I must admit, I'm not that prude when it comes to erotica, but with the fact something like that is connected to a very G for everyone profile.
Even as I feel that I feel guilty, because, they wrote it for me, and who am I to complain? How effing rude would I have to be to demand they remove their gift? What a jerk right? But I'm still considering it.
So what are your thoughts on nsfw gifting? Ask first to know if the gifted wants it? No need to ask at all? Only if the person who receives the fit already has nsfw stuff on their profile?
Thank you for your opinion.

Do you sometimes...
Do you sometimes just go to the new work page on fanfiction or ao3 and just engage? What I mean by that is, I look at the new fanfics. I find some that look interesting, even if I don't know the fandom. I read the first chapter and I leave a comment/review.
Sometimes I even go as far as to explore the author's bookmarks and other works. It's a great way to find stories.
It leads me towards fics I would never have read had they just been on the fandom's page. I used to do it all the time in portuguese, where the 50 new fics went through like 2 or 3 days. But I find it even more rewarding in english.
There is nothing better for a writer than getting a comment 5 or 10 minutes after posting. How great is that?

That Elitist friend who gets published professionally, deletes all their fanfiction and blanks you...
I don't write this to get people upset at my friend, or even to shake their fists, as if they could do anything. I write this to get some advice.
So though I've been published professionaly before, I really don't do it for a living, or even think much of it. For one thing, it's work, it's answering to editor demands, it's rewriting on a schedule, it's a lot. So Fanfiction has always been sort of my escape. I love writing, but it's writing on my terms mostly for myself, with my deadlines in mind. Mostly.
A friend of mine does not share those views. For years they wrote a popular pairing, with moderate success, and for years they hoped to get a professional novel (professional here meaning being paid for it), pubilished. It wasn't going well until I pointed them to a call for submission that fit in what they usually wrote. "Rather than reinvent yourself, why don't you write something familiar, with your own touch" I remember saying. Long story short they submitted, they got paid, they got published, and their dream was realised.
However, I must admit to not knowing how to react to their attitude nowadays. Not only did they delete their every story (understandable, some publishers demand that, and I have copies) but they totally dish on fanfiction. Calling it "amateurish" and saying stuff like "it's stealing, and lazy". Any attempts to remind her of their past seem to upset her, I have taken to not bring it up anymore.
I'm not exactly sure how to react, because sure, it's a small thing, and she has a right to an opinion. But at the same time, those fics made her, those fics shaped her writing, they made her better , even so I can't help but think "Dude, I write fanfiction, those dishes are not cool"
It's not that I'm better than her, for being published and still writing fanfiction. And it's not my place to tell her she's wrong, but it does leave a pretty bitter taste in my mouth.
Like, she keeps telling me to drop fanfiction for a variety of reasons, but I just enjoy it. I don't need reassurance that fanfiction isn't immoral, look at where I am, but I do need your opinion.
Is this a particularly common thing with authors? Do they speak badly of their past in fandom? I know for a fact I speak badly of my old writing, but not the fandoms themslves. Should I try to reason? Drop the point? Step away due to differences?
What's your opinion?

If you had the option to turn your fanfiction into official material - would you?
This is a question that's been bothering me for a while now. In my experience there exist people that write fanfiction to practice their writing, to hopefully some day jump into the throes of original fiction, and then there are those who are satisfied with their writing and do it as a hobby, to expand on a universe they came to care about (or to fix it - but let's not get into that)
...Anyway, there's a portuguese author, who, though she isn't incredibly popular writes the most amazing stories. She's got a devoted and loyal following, and - I'm not going to ramble about how awesome she is.
But, anyway, she's sort of setting up a "anthology from the fans" book with her publisher, where tales the fans sent (within the guidelines), about minor characters she has no plans for - enter her universe as canon (if selected of course). On the one hand it feels a bit cynical to me - you make the fans do all the work then sell it (though we get a upfront payment), on the other I love this universe and the chance to shape it, in however small a way, is sort of a dream come true.
I'm just torn on the issue, between "fanfic is for fans, by fans, and afford us total freedom, and I enjoy that" and "I already write this universe anyway, and God knows I'm bustling with ideas for the universe, if it's so inconsequential, why wouldn't I do it?"
What do you think?
