It's Best Time Ever to be a Black Friday Bitcoin Shopper
New Post has been published on https://coinmakers.tech/news/its-best-time-ever-to-be-a-black-friday-bitcoin-shopper
It's Best Time Ever to be a Black Friday Bitcoin Shopper
Turns out, there are all sorts of things one can pay for with their crypto, with options increasing each holiday season. Admittedly, we’re still far from being able to buy absolutely all we need/want, but we’re definitely closer than ever.
Thursday, November 28 is Thanksgiving in the United States, and this holiday is followed by one of the largest shopping phenomena, called Black Friday. It’s the first day of the Christmas shopping season, and retailers make numerous special offers to please their customers, who usually make some very good deals on this day. Pretty much anything can be purchased for a lower price – but in fiat.
We were wondering what the Thanksgiving / Black Friday season is offering to those wanting to pay with their hard-earned and/or hard-hodled crypto. “I have decided not to continue running the Bitcoin Black Friday event,” said founder Jon Holmquist in a statement. “After 7 years, and 6 successful events, I have fallen out of love with using bitcoin as a means of consumer payment.” And that marked the end of one of the best-known events in the Cryptoworld, but worry not, as there’s an abundance of other events waiting for your crypto.
Crypto wallets and charts
There are various ways that crypto-wallet-related businesses and apps enable you to do your Thanksgiving / Black Friday shopping. A major crypto wallet-maker, Ledger, has a 30% off sitewide sale, announcing that “it’s Black Friday all week.” The promotion is live from November 25 to December 2, for Nano X, Nano S, Backup Pack and OTG Kit bought through the site. Furthermore, another major wallet, Trezor, also has a special offer of 30% off with a promocode from November 26 to December 3, with free shipping to EU and the U.S.
But if you need different kind of tools, for two more days, TradingView, a web-based charting package and trading social network, offers 40-60% on its Pro, Pro+ and Premium plans.
Through an app into a major shop
This option alone will get you inside many large shops to buy anything they offer. You can use an app, such as SPEDN, a product of a payments startup Flexa and cryptocurrency exchange Gemini, to shop at certain large retailers, such as Bed, Bath & Beyond, Whole Foods, Nordstrom, and Barnes & Noble. You can pay in Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Bitcoin Cash (BCH) and Gemini Dollar (GUSD). You can also go through the U.S.-based crypto payments startup Fold, also known for its Lighting Pizza, to shop at a variety of major retailers. Just like offering additional discounts on the Prime Day, Fold announced “unprecedented” cashback in BTC for Black Friday season, up to 20% satsback on every purchase.
Directly to retailers
There’s actually a number of retailers you can shop at directly using your crypto. You can search among thousands of available items over on the crypto-friendly Overstock.com, all of which are 70% off as a part of their Black Friday sale, in addition to free shipping, according to their website. This Friday will also see a 60% discount on all crypto-themed fashionable items over at Kryptoez, as well as up to 90% discount on Newegg on a variety of different items during their Black Friday sale.
Miners rejoice
Every holiday luckily offers special deals on mining equipment – which is excellent news given their high price. Crypto Courier Mart, for example, is having a special Black Friday event now, offering 30%-50% off on a number of popular products, including Antminer from mining hardware giant Bitmain, which you can pay for in crypto.
Charities
Give crypto. Give education.
This is a motto of Pencils for Promise (PoP), a non-profit organization that builds schools and works on increasing educational opportunities in the developing world. They announced that they now accept donations in crypto – to be precise, in BTC, ETH, BCH, GUSD, Litecoin (LTC), and ZCash (ZCH). The site states that 100% of tax-deductible crypto donations go towards educating children globally. “Pencils of Promise received a significant cryptocurrency donation from the Pineapple Fund in 2017,” said Tanya Ramos, CEO of PoP. “We have experienced the power of cryptocurrency in the social impact space firsthand.”
Bitcoin Tuesday
Speaking of donations, Pencils of Promise partnered with The Giving Block, a team of nonprofit strategists and cryptocurrency investors that helps nonprofits to fundraise crypto. They are the organizers of Bitcoin Tuesday, held on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, which falls on December 3 this year. Anybody can join and donate to one of many crypto-friendly nonprofits. In an emailed press release, Alex Wilson, co-founder of The Giving Block said that “Giving Tuesday inspires millions around the world to support and give to the causes that matter to them. But, despite the enhanced tax benefits that crypto donations can offer donors, the day has failed to capture the attention of crypto donors in years past.“ Co-founder Pat Duffy added that “Bitcoin Tuesday will introduce a largely traditional audience to Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, driving crypto adoption. When nonprofits accept crypto donations, the world sees crypto as the force for good we know it to be.”
CryptoGivingTuesday and BitGive
Crypto can be given any day of the week. These two organizations do not offer one-day/seasonal/Thanksgiving-related events, but should still be mentioned as options for your donation this holiday season. CryptoGivingTuesday will enable you to donate different cryptos to a number of nonprofits and NGOs. BitGive, founded in 2013, takes less than 1% in fees, while providing transparency and accountability, as its GiveTrack project allows the donors to see how the money is being spent in real time, the website claims.
Earning through extensions
Not everything’s about spending/giving. Something’s about earning too. There are options for you to use fiat to shop but earn crypto back. Besides Fold, we’ve reported previously on two extensions that let you earn money: Moon and Lolli. New York-based Moon is a browser extension for Chrome, Brave and Opera, that allows you to pay with Bitcoin, Litecoin, Ether or Bitcoin Cash on certain e-commerce sites, with more sites to come, and earn crypto back upon purchase. Lolli, available via website or browser extension for Chrome and Firefox, enables their users to earn BTC when they shop from Lolli’s partner merchants, such as Bloomingdale’s, Office Depot, Gap, Old Navy, and more. They partnered with a major goods and food delivery service, Postmates, at the end of August and have announced a new partnership to be launched tomorrow.
Crypto sale!
OK, not a sale per se, as crypto is being sold 24/7, but it just so happens that the entire market had a little bit of a tumble two days ago, coinciding with the Thanksgiving week, so you can get some crypto for yourself for a lower price than we’ve gotten used to in the past few months. The last 24 hours are already green for the majority of the market, but as we know, the prices can go up, or they can go further down, really quickly – so this type of a ‘sale’ is a risky business. In either case, top 10 coins by market capitalization are now 11%-26% cheaper than a month ago, but seven of them are 12%-230% pricier than a year ago. As the cliché goes, ‘only time will show’ whether this ‘sale’ was a good time to buy some cryptos.

Featured Deal
43-Inch TCL 4K Roku TV
$320 ($180 off) from Amazon
TCL’s 5 Series 4K TV with Roku built into it is our top recommended entry-level TV. It has all the basics of a good 4K HDR TV, with good picture quality and a better interface than some $1,000-plus sets, thanks to Roku.
Affordable TVs You Won’t Hate
Vizio
43-Inch TCL 1080p Roku TV for $220 ($20 off)
Amazon
I don’t recommend you purchase an HDTV unless you’re truly strapped for cash. It’s worth the investment to buy a 4K set, which has four times as many pixels as an HD set. But if you are going to stick with HD, or are buying a TV for a secondary room, this Roku TV should do the trick. You’ll like the easy remote and simple Roku interface. The 32-inch model is also on sale for $150, though it doesn’t quite have a full HD resolution.
50-Inch Sharp 4K Roku TV for $330 ($70 off)
Best Buy
Sharp’s Roku TV is also pretty bare-bones and doesn’t get those deep blacks you’ll find on some of the more expensive TVs. Then again, you may not care. If you’re hunting for a second TV, or want a bargain, this Sharp also has Roku built-in, which is nice. It also has a 1080p HD version and other sizes, all of which are priced affordably.
Sceptre 55-Inch 4K UHD TV for $240 ($160 off)
Walmart
This Sceptre gives you a very large screen with a high 4K resolution, and four HDMI ports. The picture should be good enough to feel like a good step up from HD. Some users complain about the sound, though poor audio quality is a problem on most every TV. No matter what TV you buy, we recommend you pick up a good soundbar (or read our Best Soundbars guide).
55-Inch Samsung NU6900 4K TV for $398 ($302 off)
Walmart, Best Buy
Sizes: 43-Inch, 50-Inch, 55-Inch
This is a respectable entry-level Samsung 4K TV with basic HDR for improved contrast. The sound output is solid, as is the picture quality . You’ll have to get around the fact that there are only two HDMI ports, but that’s the only major problem. Smaller sizes of this TV get as cheap as $278 for the 43-inch model.
60-Inch Vizio D Series 4K TV for $498 ($200 off)
Walmart
Deal Active through November 23
This Vizio is already on sale, but it will be even cheaper for Black Friday. It’ a small step down from the Vizio E Series below, but it still has killer picture quality. Vizio TVs are a good bargain all around. Pair this one with a soundbar to really kick your home theater to a new level.
70-Inch Vizio E Series 4K TV for $750 ($150 off)
Best Buy
Sizes: 43-Inch, 50-Inch, 55-Inch, 65-Inch, 70-Inch
Vizio’s E Series is a step above the bargain bin, with a full array of backlights and local dimming, which makes certain areas of the screen lighter or darker, depending on the action. We reviewed the E Series last year and it gets a WIRED Recommends award this year too.
86-Inch LG 4K HDR TV +$250 Gift Card for $2,497 ($2,000 off)
Dell
If you want a beautiful TV in the absurdly large size of 86 inches, it’s hard to beat this LG LED 4K HDR model. It looks fantastic compared to most sets, and comes in 70 and 75 inches if you want to downsize just a tad.
Deals on the Absolute Best TVs
LG
THE BEST: LG OLED C8 55-Inch 4K TV for $1,497 ($700 off)
Amazon
No TV screen technology beats OLED right now. It’s the only display type capable of perfect blacks, because every pixel independently lights itself—no backlight required. It’s the best-looking TV of 2018 (8/10, WIRED Recommends).
Vizio P Series 55-Inch for $650 ($150 off)
Best Buy
Vizio’s P Series may be the cheapest path to owning a premium TV. It’s LCD, but has local dimming to selectively darken areas of the screen, and deep blacks. I’ve been using it for a couple months, and it’s an absolute joy. Read my full review for more details (8/10, WIRED Recommends).
49-Inch Sony X900F for $898 ($202 off)
Amazon, B&H
Sizes: 49-Inch, 55-Inch, 65-Inch, 75-Inch, 85-Inch
The Sony X900F is one of the best-looking TVs money can buy—by most measures. It excels with deep blacks and high contrast and works well for absolutely anything, including gaming. It’s comparable to Samsung’s QLED tech, and just a step down from LG’s OLED TVs. Sony also chose Google’s Android TV for its interface, which means you may not need to buy a Roku at first.
49-Inch Samsung QLED Q6FN 4K TV for $698 ($200 off)
Amazon, Walmart, B&H, Best Buy, Jet
Sizes: 49-Inch, 55-Inch, 65-Inch, 75-Inch, 82-Inch
To compete with LG’s OLED technology, Samsung came up with QLED—a modified version of LED that helps it attain deeper blacks. We still prefer OLED, but Samsung’s TVs are the next best thing. The Q6FN is a slight downgrade from Samsung’s higher end Q8FN (7/10 WIRED Review), but it’s a fantastic TV nonetheless. The Q8FN is also on sale for $1,498 ($300 off) if you’re credit card needs a good challenge.
Home Theater Deals
Roku
Be sure to check out our Best Soundbars and Best TV Streaming Devices roundups for more information about some of these picks.
Roku Streaming Stick Plus for $48 ($22 off)
Amazon
This is the Best Overall TV streaming device and our favorite Roku (Read our Roku Guide). Just plug it in the back of your TV and off Roku will whisk you—to a land where Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, and HBO Now roam free. Roku has nearly everything, and it’s reliable. The Streaming Stick is also our favorite because it can hold a solid dual-band Wi-Fi connection, which is always good when you’re streaming high resolution video.
Roku Ultra for $50 ($50 off)
Amazon
Roku is WIRED’s top-recommended streaming platform and the Roku Ultra is the best Roku has to offer. This box will let you stream Netflix, along with just about any other streaming app. On top of that, it can control the power and volume of your TV, has a USB port and MicroSD slot for loading local media, and comes with a pair of earbuds that connect to the remote so you can listen to your TV in silence at night.
SHOP HAPPY
Get Gadget Lab’s picks of the best holiday deals this season. Headphones, laptops, TVs, oh my!
Roku SE (HD TVs) for $20
Walmart In-Store Only
We don’t usually share in-store Black Friday Deals, but if you do find yourself in a Walmart at midnight this Friday, see if you can snatch up one of these. It’s basically a Roku Premiere, but half the price. Just know it’s for HDTVs only.
Amazon Fire TV Stick 4K for $35 ($15 off)
Amazon
If you watch a lot of Amazon videos, or subscribe to Prime, the Fire TV Stick is perfect for you. It does have most other streaming services—Amazon always pushes it’s own content, though.
Amazon Fire TV Cube (Hands-Free Alexa) for $60 ($60 off)
Amazon
The Fire TV Cube is like the Fire Stick, except it has hands-free voice menus, so you can talk to your TV to play movies and navigate menus. It works… sometimes (read our full review), but at half price, even if you don’t love the voice features, it’s still a good Fire TV.
Sonos Beam Soundbar for $349 ($50 off)
Amazon, Sonos
The Sonos Beam is one of WIRED’s favorite soundbars (8/10, WIRED Recommends) and a perfect start to a Sonos setup. We like it because it’s compact, sounds outstanding, and has hands-free Alexa and Sonos voice access (Google Home coming soon). The Sonos Sub is also $100 off and is amazing if paired with a Beam, though it’s still quite pricey.
Polk Command Bar Soundbar for $199 ($100 off)
Amazon
Polk’s Command Bar is a functional, easy to use soundbar (yes, your TV needs a soundbar) that also comes with built-in Alexa. The included sub adds some bass. At this price, it’s hard to find a combo soundbar with smart features anywhere else. Read our full review to learn more. If you don’t like Alexa, Polk’s other MagniFi soundbars are also on sale for $100-$200 off, and good quality.
Samsung Soundbar, Sub, and Surround Speakers for $169 ($70 off)
Walmart
Deal Active November 22 – November 26
It’s tough to find a good soundbar and subwoofer for under $200, and this Samsung setup doesn’t end there. It has two surround speakers as well.
Vizio 28-Inch Soundbar for $50 ($30 off)
Target
This is not the best soundbar you can buy. Not at all. But Vizio soundbars fill our Best Soundbas list for a reason: they’re cheap and they sound excellent for their size. No matter what TV you own if you’ve never invested in speakers for it, do yourself a favor and give this a try. It’s only $50. It will give you a taste of what you’re missing out on.

Giving a police report to your insurance....?
I need to give a copy of a police report to my insurance company for an act of vandalism to my parents car. I am 20 and I was using the car when it was vadalized. It states specific information such as her age, ethnicity, address, etc. I have very overbearing parents who are consistently trying to control my life. I told them about the incident but not the specifics and I really do not want them to find out any information about my ex girlfriend because it may cause problems. My parents told me they were going to try and get the police report I filed. Can they do this, or can the report only be requested by the party who filed the grievance. I already got the report for my insurance records because they requested a copy, but how much of the report do I have to give them. Another page provides a narrative which states specifics about the incident and how we broke up etc. Do I have to provide that to the insurance company as well?""

What does it take to commit a minor and how do you afford it if you don't have health insurance?
My uncle and aunt are struggling with my 16 year old cousin who suffers from anorexia and she will go up to 3 weeks without eating anything. I am not kidding she only drinks water and then she will slowly puree some fruit into her water again for about a week or two before she binges for a few days and then goes back to this cycle of starvation. She looks pale and has no energy. Her eyes are sunken in and she hides in her room unless shes on a binge and she cries and says shes ok when they tell her lets go see a doctor. My aunt and uncle are immigrants and they don't speak english that well. They don't have a lot of money or health insurance and I have no idea what to do but they are asking me to help! I've never dealt with this type of situation before and I'm just thinking they should call an ambulance and maybe they'll commit her to some state institution? ""As an estimation, how much would an 18 year old have to pay for insurance on a Mercedes Benz?""
I am 18 years old, and I have a beautiful opportunity to buy a Mercedez Benz for incredibly cheap. Problem is, I cannot buy the car until I know whether the insurance would be affordable or not. I did get a DUI when I was 17 years old, but it was reduced down to a Reckless Driving charge, considering it was my first offense, and a minor one at that. I do not have anything else on my record, including my driving record. The car is a 2002 Mercedez Benz ML320 that just barely hit the mark for 114,000 miles the other day. I have tried looking for insurance quotes but they all ask how many miles I put on it annually and how many days I drive it to work and all that junk. I cant answer these questions because the car is not yet mine. So I turned to this website for help! Somebody please help me with just a simple but relevant estimate as to how much money I would have to pay for insurance on this car. I do not wish to have the car under double-coverage. basically, i've got 1 year no claims with direct line car insurance for the past year( only 1 year driving experience). i was paying 85 for fully comprehensive, and was 24years old when applied for the insurance. i just received a letter from direct line for my renewal, and now it's gone up to 109. i was wondering what might cause it to increase, and if now am over 25years should i really inform them (if it's gonna make a difference). is it advisable to switch to another company for maybe cheaper deals?! p.s i have a vauxhall calibra year 1995""

Car accident? insurance???
Long story short, I was in an at fault car accident (only because I crossed the double-yellow line) but thats beside the point. It came off as my fault. Now the other driver was driving a 2003 audi they're saying his car is totalled. So he's probably going to be getting a pretty hefty check. For my car insurance, I only have liability so its 1,300 a year. That's $108.33 a month. How much do you think it will go up after the settlement is given? I heard that it will go up so much percent for like 3 years??? I am 19 years old , and will be driving for almost a year at the end of October.""

Do you really believe that America has the best healthcare in the world?
Please say why you believe this when all evidence points to the contrary. You talk about health, cost, care, ect, we do not have the best. People in other countries have better. I mean...I listened to sean hannity say that we have the best healthcare and the only evidence he could provide is some vauge story about a politician from another country coming here to get healthcare...that doesn't really qualify as evidence. Especially when the world health organization ranks healthcare, and we're nowhere near number 1. Now this is a fact that I've known for about two years before this debate even flared up. How is misinformation getting so out of hand? Please...tell me why we have the best with 50 million people uninsured. When we pay the most of any country in the world with some of the worst care. When we have some of the most unhealthy people. When insurance companies exempt for preconditions, when healthcare cost is the biggest contributor to our debt, when we pay premiums every month for something that doesn't happen, and when it does we have to co pay, then when it runs out we're screwed. Healthcare is the number one bankrupter in this country...over 70% of the people have health insurance when they first get sick and they still go bankrupt. Explain how this is the best please. And this has nothing to do with Obamas plan so keep it to yourself, this is about thinking we have the best healthcare and that other countries are somehow much worse then us (they aren't). Is it true that if you buy a brand new car the car insurance will be much more than a second hand car?
Why?? I'm going to buy the very first car for me (a mazda 3 hatchpack 2006 or 2008..) and I want it to be new cause I can afford any price. But my dad keeps telling me not to buy a new car cause i won't be having good bennefits from it..such as the car insurance. It will be higher than a second hand car's...around 1000 euros every year. Also the car insurance must be full if it's a new car and I should have it on 1/3 cause its cheaper. So if it's a new car I can't have it on 1/3. What do you think I should do? Health insurance in NY state for pregnant women?
I just graduated with a bachelors degree, and my student health insurance runs out in August. The health insurance offered by my husbands job (which won't open up to me until Jan.1 anyway) considers pregnancy a pre existing condition, and won't cover it. We have been searching for affordable plans, but the only ones we have found that will cover pregnancy aren't accepted in New York state. For all the plans offered in NY that we've been able to find, none cover pregnancies in progress. I would hate to have to use the state provided health care plan for pregnant mothers (mostly because I feel like there is no reason for me to be part of a government program when we are capable of paying for our own insurance, but also because it means we have to go to specific clinics and I won't be able to keep my doctor), but there is no way we will be able to cover all the costs of a birth, especially if for some reason I need a C-Section or the like. Can anyone give me some advice, especially as it relates to the NY state health plan for pregnant women?""

Toxic Habits: Process Addictions
Illegal drugs, alcohol, or pills are not the only things that define addiction. Sometimes the problem can be a behavior (or a mixture of habits) that plague someone until major problems occur, or a disaster makes change become inevitable. These compulsive behaviors sometimes become so difficult to break that they impact everyday living and persist beyond consequences. This indicates that there may be a problem known as a “process addiction.”
There is a wide field of possible process addictions that may include things like gambling, internet use, sex, or even shopping. Sometimes the stigma and judgement around these problem habits is more powerful than the stigma around substance use problems. That stigma can make it very difficult to seek help. Many people feel deep sensations of anxiety, shame, or guilt when they realize that they have a problem with behaviors that seem easy and non-addictive for other people. Process addictions are often misunderstood, unfairly judged, and ignored in addiction literature.
Process addictions, also called “behavioral addictions”, are much more common than many people think. Just because people don’t seek help or announce their problem doesn’t mean they are not suffering. Many people are afraid to reach out for help and fear the stigma of society and lack of understanding within their own families.
The American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) defines addiction in terms of brain changes. They state that “addiction is a primary, chronic disease of brain reward, motivation, memory, and related circuitry.” This means that addiction is a brain disease centered around the reward system and is not limited by substances alone.
Some common process addictions include:
Gambling
Food
Sex
Pornography
Use of computers, internet or phones
Exercise
Shopping
Use of video games
Recently, I went to a casino and, while there, watched the patrons around me, played a little myself, and also paid attention to my surroundings. Gambling is not about getting pretty, going out, and having a nice evening with others. Most of the people I saw there were elderly people, highly focused on themselves and their slot machine, feeding every penny in it they had with the big hopes of the big win. Most of them were regulars, and the only interaction with others they experience is in the smoking corner outside, while rushing a half cigarette, eager to go back to their money eating machine.
Nobody was dressed up for a fancy evening, they all had just one purpose in mind: To sit as long as possible in front of a slot machine or at a table and leave happy with a pocket full of money. Many looked as if they didn’t have the money to spend. In part, excessive use of alcohol seemed to make the spending on gambling even easier for some. Table games gave many a sense of belonging and power, which was obvious to see, while I had my doubts that they would ever throw $500 across a counter in their regular lives, as they did the chips on table games.
I tried it myself. The frustration of losing was nearly unbearable. It was constantly on my mind. I thought about what nice things I could have bought for the money that I had just fed into the slots. No, I didn’t play pennies. I wanted risk; I played maximum bet, each time, every time. You can’t win a jackpot with a 40-cent bet—you only win big if you make that click of a button take five dollars or more away from you. My mood was getting so down that lost interest in talking to anyone, eating, or drinking anything.
Suddenly I got a win. My brain made a somersault on endorphins. I instantly got high on the amount of neurotransmitters rushing through my brain, as the machine played some fancy music and indicated a big win. The numbers started to go up—they were flashing and ringing, all my senses became highly involved. What a great feeling. The machine stopped too soon, I hadn’t recovered my losses yet.
So there was only one remedy according to my brain: change my seat and do it again and again until I am the big winner. I don’t have to tell you that I left the place frustrated and with zero dollars in my pocket. In chasing my own money that I had lost, I went to the ATM and took another $200 from my bank account and lost that as well, all while chasing that high of winning.
The regret, shame, and guilt all came to me instantly on the way home. The next day, I was already contemplating going back. I started thinking that I should forget about that unlucky day—I thought, “today, it will be all different.”
Then I remembered. Insanity is defined as doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. Some people come up with thoughts like, “It was Saturday, not a good day to gamble. If I go back on Wednesdays, the slots will pay better.”
Some people tell themselves how much enjoyment they got out of the evening, that it was worth every penny. Was it? Leaving frustrated? Having not talked to a single soul? Staring at a screen for hours until a headache came up? Does this sound familiar to those of you that had experience with alcohol or drug addiction? I didn’t destroy my body with any poison, but the rest is just the same.
I am in the lucky position to be familiar with my own addiction problems, issues, quirks, and habits, and can analyze my own behavior and sound the alarm when those things sneak in my life. Sadly, many others are not aware of those issues and cannot call to action. Some of us need professional help. The good news is that behavioral addictions are treatable.
I saw signs for the gambling helpline number all over the casino, but I’m sure that most people will not call there or reach out for help. It’s hard to admit having a problem with something that was supposed to be entertainment. It is entertainment for many, for those that can afford it, that don’t chase the dream, that don’t feel the compulsion. If you are an addict, like myself, then you know: we quickly have other motives, we chase the dragon, the high of the first win, the reward.
Let’s talk about shopping. I’m sure that anyone buys unnecessary things here and there, maybe after seeing an offer that is too good to pass. The retail industry makes sure that people are lured in by those sales. Scoring one of those super televisions on Black Friday for little money is a feeling much like winning the lottery. But what if you already have five televisions at home and only four rooms in the house? Or what about the person that buys a children’s winter jacket by a certain prestige brand, because it’s 85% discounted, but has no kids or relatives that age? What about the person with so much unopened toilet paper in the garage that the car won’t fit anymore? These people may not be hoarders. Compulsive shopping may be caused by a process addiction. It happens more than you might think. Don’t judge the person– if you know him, reach out and offer help if help is wanted.
Certain retailers highlight how much you ‘saved’ instead of how much you paid on your receipt. That makes you feel great about the store and you keep coming back. All of those stores, casinos, malls, and websites employ the best of the best psychologists available—professionals that have the job to make you spend more. Many of us fall in this trap, because our brain-reward systems are pre-programmed to get high from this behavior. If you are a millionaire, it may not affect your life to spend so much, but for normal people it can be a loss of important funds.
Process addictions might stand alone, or may function alongside or even as a substitute for substance use disorders. The need for reward, the wish to escape, the covering of trauma, the presence of co-occurring mental health conditions, and other underlying problems all create a variety of ways that an addicted person may try to cope. When someone enters drug or alcohol recovery, the hope is that he or she will become free of all behavioral and substance use disorders.
It is very important for each person to accept supportive help to understand the causes behind any addictive or compulsive behaviors, or they will just bounce from one problem to another. We can all learn to change toxic habits and replace them with new, healthy ways to enjoy life, cope with problems and spend our time.
Please don’t be afraid to reach out for help. Help doesn’t always involve residential treatment– perhaps visiting a therapist near you can help. But most of all, don’t be afraid to admit it. You are not alone. There are many other people in similar situations around you, perhaps more than you can imagine.
Get help before you lose what you love or need: your spouse, your family, your home, your retirement, the money to feed your child this month. Don’t feel ashamed to suffer a disease that is treatable. If you have a bad tooth, you go to see a dentist. Please see a mental health expert if you have problems with your behavioral or mental health. There is no need to suffer with this pain.
I ask you to share this article with every group you are a member of, at Facebook pages, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Instagram. It’s so easy to copy the URL and paste it anywhere.

I’m a leader, not a boss.
Story Time!
So I worked at JCPenney in my hometown my senior year of college. My time there, I learned a lot and grew, taking opportunities and moving up.  It wasn’t long before I was the visual merchandising associate (my favorite job I ever had).
Then, upon graduating college, I decided to move to Chicago where there were “more opportunities.”  Really, my boyfriend was going for grad school and I wanted to finally leave that godforsaken small town. Side note, while Chicago is amazing and huge and great for business people, try getting a fashion job that isn’t retail... you can’t.
So when I moved, I transferred to the closed JCPenney until I could find something “better” for me to do.  Most of my peers already had fancy jobs awaiting them in New York or California, but not me. I could not find anything Chicago.  So alas, I stuck it out in hopes of at least moving up and making more dough.
So there I was, demoted back to sales associate in the men’s department making barely minimum wage for Chicago. Let me interject by saying that I worked really hard to get 3 raises in my time back home to be making great money, but in Chicago market that was nothing.  So I worked hard, in a VERY urban, big store unlike the store I was accustomed to. I searched and searched for opportunities but alway lost out to people with “more experience.” Finally, after nearly quitting and moving back home, my store manager asked me to be the temporary supervisor for the holiday season.  Around that same time, I applied for a manager program that I thought I damn near deserved but probably would never get into.
By November, guess what. I made the cut. I got it. I was the new Assistant Manager Trainee for the Chicago market. While this doesn’t sound that great, it was. Only 12 Trainees were in the program nationwide, and Managers in big-time department stores are no joke. I started my first big boy job out of college, and while it wasn’t necessarily designing clothes or buying like I wanted, it was a decent job.
I transferred to my 3rd JCPenney in just under 2 years with the company to the notorious and infamous Orland Park JCP for my Training. There I met some of the best people I’ve ever known. I grew more than I thought I would and became a success. Mind you, this is one of the biggest JCPenney’s in the whole company, and is notorious for corporate visits. While there, I got to meet the CEO, tour the store with all kinds of people, lead major projects, and takeover the launch of the New Major Appliances. Once I completed my 3 month training, I was rightfully so, an Assistant Store Manager. All the while, my partner was growing more and more pregnant. Finally, she gave birth and took her leave, allowing me to take her spot while I awaited my final placement. (I’m going to brag a little and just say that the other managers all told me that I was the best Trainee they ever had). It was like home, family. I loved this store and wanted to stay forever, but I always knew I wouldn’t get to. Which brings us to Chicago.
The day came when my District Manager finally started to give me news about being placed in my very own store. It was exciting and nerve-wracking. So I had to conference with a general manager at the store in Fort Wayne, which made me super hopeful because my friend from home who went through this program the year prior was placed there. Fort Wayne is also where my boyfriend is from close to home for me. But then, two days later, just after Black Friday, when I thought my DM was going to say Fort Wayne, he said Ford City Mall.
I had always heard of Ford City, but it was never good words. The trainee from the year before me was placed there and was already leaving. This store had gained a reputation as hard, crazy, dangerous, and worst of all just plain awful.  They went through managers left and right, for many reasons. Either way, I had no choice in the matter, and this was my new place to work.
I found out on a Thursday and had to report to my new drill sergeant, I mean General Manager, on Monday. Everyone at Orland Park was sad to see me go after nearly 10 months. But it was like a promotion, so I should have been happy. Right? After the sweetest going away party in true Orland Park fashion, I said my goodbyes and hugged and cried with my peers.  Shout out to the best boss I could ever ask for, a man who changed me and taught me so much.
So all weekend my head was spinning a web. All I ever head of Ford City was negative press, so I didn’t know what to think. I knew that the guy I was replacing never liked it there, so what was I about to get into. I loved JCPenney so I went in as optimistic as I could. Monday came, it was 7am, and I was now the assistant manager at JCPenney in Chicago... the only JCPenney in Chicago...on the southwest side.  But the first day, I set up my office, met everyone, and had a great day. I was actually very excited and hopeful.
Cut to a few weeks later and I completely understood the rumors. This store is very urban, meaning very different and challenging. It is also huge. And I had to learn things I thought I already knew, without much help. My boss was everything I heard he was and more. The micro-managing devil who wanted everything done exactly his way or no way. I was working roughly 70 hours every week. Being “coached” about every decision I made, made to feel inferior and small. I went from the best boss ever to Donald Trump. But I decided I would prove myself, prove what I could do, and do my absolute best even though the other manager was not.
There were countless things I could go on about forever which made it awful to work there. But there were some positive lights at the end of that tunnel. I made connections with people that will always be there because of this experience. The other two assistant managers and myself are very close now because we all know the struggles. And some of the people who worked and shopped at the small are the best kind of people. Also, because this store is the only one in the city, and right next to Midway Airport, it got frequent corporate visits. For me, seeking a career in buying at corporate level, this exposure was priceless. I also made hella bank, like really good money for a 23 year old. Oh, and it was a shorter commute, which can be EVERYTHING on your drive home.
But all this was not enough for me. I came into work every day afraid to see what challenges I’d face that day. I would wake up to 10 emails almost everyday, 30 or so on my days off. And I was expected to work like a dog. All this would be okay if my boss cared, recognized it, or even said please & thank you.
After months of unhappiness, and me taking this experience for granted a little bit, and complete mental breakdowns every week, I finally decided to do it. I was going to put in my 2 weeks.  But I stuck it out again. You see, I have never felt like I am great at anything, but rather just good or okay at a lot of things. But this, my work ethic and my hardworking nature, that is the one thing I know I am amazing at. And I had always gotten praise for it. I got to be a manager in under 2.5 years in the hardest store in the midwest. So yeah, I think I should be happier in this circumstance. I had never been told I wasn’t working hard enough or that I wasn’t good enough at my job. Until now.
My mother always said you need to work somewhere at least 3 months to give it its fair shake, and to decide if its you or the job. Well after 5 months, I finally, finally, finally just quit one day.  I worked really hard, my hardest I could despite hating life, slipping into a deep depression again (first time since high school), and despite not having support from my boss. Side bar, I asked for transfers, I asked for guidance, I even started sticking up for myself to him.  The thing is, I am close with my family, my family who lives 5 hours away. I want to see them on holidays and my weekends off, which only happens once or less a month. Easter was approaching and my boss was riding me hard.  I finally just blew up at him and I felt an air of confidence, serenity, and approval in myself for standing up for myself to him. And to some extend, I think he was waiting for it to happen because I think in a way I earned his respect. And he stopped coming for me for a couple days. But then the next week, he was at my throat again, and I threatened to walk out. He quickly stopped and apologized. Then it was calm for a few more days. I had the weekend off and just contemplated how worth it all this was, for the millionth time. I worked Monday with a different mindset over me, like I knew something needed to change. And on Tuesday, I called my mom, my boyfriend, and dad, and just said I’m doing it. I decided today is the day, and I’m off today. I am quitting. I wrote a letter and sent it to my boss and my District Manager. I resigned effective immediately. Right before Easter Weekend (HA!).
The funny thing is that every time I wanted to quit and didn’t, I thought things could change. It finally hit me that they wouldn’t. And all the times I should have but didn’t quit, I was so upset and mad. This time was different; I was calm and clear headed. This was my choice. I quit and I was proud of myself for choosing my happiness. I didn’t look at it as me giving up but rather me standing up. And it made me feel just a little vindictive to give him no notice in a holiday peak. Honestly, he didn’t care about me so I didn’t care about him.
Reflecting back on this whole story that has been my life for almost 3 years now, I see things could have been done differently. But thats life. I share this story because I need to. For me. My journey upon graduating college has not been what I always thought it would be. I am finding myself now more than ever.
Recently I have been struggling to find a job. I don’t know what I want to do with my life after quitting managing a store I used to love but now resent.  I apply and apply every day, get a handful of interviews, but never land the job. I try to pick things I think I’d like, because after all, I’m not putting myself through that torture again. My depression that started from this job has stuck around, and some days around great. I start regretting my decision to leave abruptly, a thing I swore wouldn’t happen.  My parents wished I would have found something else before quitting. My mom wished I had given two week notice so I could be re-hirable. But to me, none of that matters or is worth it.  All that matters is that I ended that book and now I am starting a new one. I’m in the prologue awaiting to start the first chapter.
All things considered, I am still happy I left. I just wish things could have gone differently. The whole point of me moving to Chicago was to experience the city, to grow, and to find a job that is right for me. I’ve done two of those things. I just need to find myself and then the career.
The challenges I’m facing now are finding the career path that is right for me, as I now know managing isn’t. In a way, it was always me settling. I look to buying as my next conquest, however who really knows what’s next. The future is real, the struggles are real, but the happiness is real too.
I do thank that awful boss though. If it weren’t for him, I wouldn’t know just how special, important, and awesome I am. I wouldn’t know my limits. I wouldn’t know that while he thought I wasn’t a good manager, I KNOW I am. I learned a lot about what I am looking for in my life in order to be happy at work.
I have gone to a few interviews where they ask what my managing style is and I ALWAYS SAY, “I believe in being a leader, not a boss.” Managing isn’t about being a tyrant, its about empowering, teaching, and leading by example.
It is now 3:32am, I am tired, rambling, and clearing my soul. With that I am done. Thank you for reading, or not.
Good night. Hire me.

Instant workspace http://ift.tt/2pf5Q1m Sara @ Russet Street Reno So, you may recall from my entry remodel post that I had this awkward space in between our couch and the railing.
Here is a better look at this useless clutter zone.
I had a dream to use this little strip of space for a desk area.  Up until now, my laptop lived here:
Sup, breast pump?  Obviously, this was totally unacceptable for a work area.  As a photographer, I spend hours on my laptop editing, and this setup was uncomfortable at best.  I also had the bad habit of just setting mail, paperwork to be filed, and my external hard drives right there on the couch.  It was awful!
I also had all my lenses and cameras just sitting on our Ikea bookshelves surrounding the tv.  It looked so messy.
My plan was to replace the console table with a small desk, and move all this stuff over to the desk area.  This was not easy, since the desks I liked were much wider than the 40ish inches I had in the space.  Then, I found this simple 42" desk at World Market, and took advantage of a sale.
It was sort of hard to put together, because the metal is hand forged and the holes didn't exactly match up.  But, I love the look and it's sturdy after assembly.  It was already functioning better to have a desk in this area immediately after I put it together.
Then, I looked to the wall above.  I had two acrylic shelves from CB2 that I had planned on staggering over a dresser in the guest room.  After I came back to reality and admitted that the room was way too small to fit even the tiniest dresser, they hid under the bed until now.  They came with silver screws, but I used some black ones I had laying around, I think they look so great!
These are 4 foot and 2 foot shelves, so I had to place the longer one past the width of the desk.  I thought I would hate that, but I actually don't mind.  It creates the illusion of a wider area, and also frames the lamp nicely.  They are also sturdy enough to hold my heavy lenses!
And I wanted to reuse my beloved pineapple lamp, so I got a new shade and it looks pretty good here.  Here is the final space:
I'm so in love with this!  There is pretty much a place for everything.  It is beyond thrilling to have my lenses look beautiful, and be easy for me to grab whenever I'm heading out to a photo session.  I even had enough space for my speedlight!
The top shelf mostly holds framed prints, because I love some good inspiration while I'm working.  I chose images of my boys that are cute (obviously) but also showcase great lighting, composition, or post processing.  I plan to rotate them out as they get bigger.
The top shelf also holds my client 'Thank You' cards I include with print orders, and this little white box I found at Homegoods keeps my battery charger, tripod mount, and a couple older memory cards that I don't use often.
Since the colors in my branding are white, charcoal, and teal/aqua, I was pretty excited when Ashford came home from school with the watercolor art you see framed here.  I found the frame at Homegoods, ripped out the inspirational 'saying' that it was meant to hold, and put his painting in.  The aqua/mint box frame in the middle was also found at Homegoods.  The clock is from Target.
Let's talk about the stag head.  Last year during Black Friday, whitefauxtaxidermy.com had their annual sale.  I bought a huge rhino head for my brother, and couldn't help but snap up 'Alfred' for half off for myself.  After I got the shipment, I was sort of at a loss with where to hang him.  Luckily, he looks majestic here, and wears a wooden camera toy my kids hardly ever look at.  I still have some anxiety about him crashing down when the door slams and destroying my laptop and lenses, but I have a heavy duty anchor back there, and I can't live my life in fear.
Since I needed a desk with small width, pretty much none offered drawers.  I didn't really mind, because I find that drawers in tight spaces just get cluttered and hard to find things in the back.  I measured the openings of the shelves, and found that CB2 had a wool storage box that had the exact same dimensions.
It holds additional hard drives, referral cards, and my supplies for mailing prints to clients.  It was not cheap, but it's beautiful quality, and I had the best customer service from the store.  Quick story - I ordered the box for pickup at the Chicago store because it's out of stock online, then quickly realized I was never ever going to be able to drive an hour to the city to get it...they shipped it from the store to me, for free.  Awesome!
The basket on the top shelf was a Michaels find, and it has a homemade camera cushion created with a $3 Target infinity scarf wrapped around a dish towel.  I do not sew, people!
Seems to be working just fine, and the baby hasn't figured out my camera hiding spot yet!
Here's a better view of the space I have between the desk and the media stand.  It's not a ton, but there is a nice little spot to store my reflector, and enough room to pull out the bins.
I wanted the desktop to be pretty clean, but I did need to have a spot for pens, my scissors, and lens pens.  I got lucky and found the acrylic divided organizer on clearance at Homegoods.  I got the business card holder on Amazon.  The elephant file organizer is at The Container Store, and you can mount it or use it on the desktop!
The elephant is important because I wanted an easily accessible place to store prints until I figure out what to do with them.  I'm usually pretty good at printing the ones I like, but as you can see from the pumpkins...I don't always do anything with them in a timely manner!
Also at The Container Store, was this clever peel and stick weekly task pad.  I thought it would be great to keep what I had to do for my business separate from the family calendar in the kitchen.  I also like that I can just stick it up on the wall in my line of sight.  I know many people use their phones, and I do as well, but I love having a visual for small tasks that don't merit a phone entry.
Here's a more realistic version of what the desk looks like while I'm working.  It's five o' clock always!
And here's what my kid is doing while I'm trying to take photos.
Speaking of the media stand, this thing is pretty boring, and not really my style anymore.  We got it for $250 back in 2008, and the veneer is starting to bubble and chip on the top and edges from being moved so many times.  I thought long and hard about what to do with it.  Paint it?  What color, white?  NO -  I have kids and this thing is perfect drawing and rolling height.  Black?  Too much black.  The navy on the front door and closet?  Eh, too close to the blue couch and may not look good.  So, in the end, I got some new bright boxes for inside and left it as is.  And that, my friends, is how you justify doing absolutely nothing.
I'm excited about the mint boxes, because the largest one will easily hold mailing boxes for 11x14 prints, which is something I usually have crapping up my house in every room.  The rest will hold older prints, and miscellaneous photography supplies.  I got mine for 30% less than retail at Homegoods, but you can get them full price at The Container Store.
The antique tray on the top has some little doo dads, but I'll be honest - the baby just picks that stuff up and throws it, so it doesn't normally live here.  Tiny acrylic box of memory cards, succulent from Lowes, gold lid acrylic box with fancy binder clips for my packaging.
So, the last detail I obsessed about is the chair.  I disliked using a dining chair, because I want all my dining chairs around the table.  I wandered around World Market one day, looking for accessories to spend $40 in 'explorer' rewards on, when I saw this chair was marked down to $100.  I loved the airy look, and the metal legs.
After I signed up for their 'text' program, I got 15% off.  With my rewards on top, I ended up paying $48 for the chair.  Not bad!  It's comfy enough for working, but I initially added a little faux fur to the seat to protect my delicate heiny.  Then I saw this throw at Target, and loved the texture.  It makes the chair more comfortable, and also adds an extra element and brightens the dark corner a little bit.
So, now that you've spent your entire morning reading about a four foot square spot of my living room, how about some before and afters?
And here is another angle that I love, seeing both my gallery walls at once.
Thanks for reading, I hope you are inspired to turn an unused corner into something great!
