the thing about reading primarily older works nowadays is that, sooner or later, you're going to run into something you deem objectionable.
things that weren't objectionable when the book was written and are now, and things that were objectionable at the time. it's everywhere, even in books aimed primarily at children.
you don't have to be comfortable with it (you don't have to finish the book, either, if it's something you decide you cannot tolerate) but it can be worthwhile to examine why you find the subject matter objectionable even if the answer is as simple as "wow, this is incredibly racist".
