I wonder how well do each 3h characters deal with spicy food
Dimitri canonically can't taste anything. However, spice isn't really a taste so much as it is a response to certain chemicals contained in spicy food. So while he might not be able to taste things he still will likely feel them if the spice is hot enough, and based on the region he is from, I doubt he comes across things that are all that spicy to begin with. Faerghus being up north and being a place plagued by food scarcity and famine tells me that spicy food isn't all that common, and as a result, lack of exposure to spice would make his tolerance of spicy food pretty low. There's also the added fact that he would feel that awful burning sensation but wouldn't actually get whatever good taste comes from spicy food, so I doubt he'd be a fan.
Claude, on the other hand, I imagine comes from a place where spices are pretty common in food. Almyra draws a lot of inspiration from places like Morocco and the Middle East, where spice in dishes is the norm. I can see Claude having a pretty high tolerance to spicy food, more so than most of the students at the academy, honestly.
Edelgard is a bit more complicated. She's from the south of Fodlan, and while the climates aren't fully discussed in the game, assuming Fodlan is about the same size as, say, Europe and placed in similar latitudes on the map, Adrestia would actually be warm enough to support more plants that produce some spices and herbs, especially in the regions as far south as Enbarr. Her also coming from the Imperial family would suggest that she would have had more chances to eat exotic foods, like certain spices. So while I'd say her tolerance for spice might be better than some, it's still not very high.
Byleth has an iron stomach (and tongue). They'll eat anything, doesn't matter what. One time Claude managed to get his hands on some ghost peppers and Byleth ate one without even flinching, much to the shock and horror of everyone.
Rhea and the other Nabateans actually have a pretty high tolerance for spice because, as mentioned above, spice isn't a taste. It's a response to things that might burn your mouth (it's why you react the same way to spice as burning your tongue, with sweating, shock, and wanting cold water). So the race of people who can turn into fire-breathing dragons kind of...naturally need a built-in resistance to things burning their mouths.
For everyone else, I see it as varying degrees based on where they come from. Brigid is supposed to be a warm, tropical place, so Petra I can see having a pretty high tolerance. On the other side of that, Gautier is the northern-most region in Fodlan, where, like a lot of northern regions in our world, spice would have to travel a long way to get to it and therefore is pretty rare. Meaning Sylvain can't really handle spice at all. Tbh most of Fodlan I see as having dishes that lean more toward salty or savoury flavour palettes vs spicy ones, so most people in Fodlan have a mild-to-moderate heat tolerance.
#fe three houses#headcanons#these are just my opinions#if anyone wants to add feel free#this would be different if this was taking place in a modern au#right now this is still very heavily affected by medieval agricultural and trade patterns#some characters like dorothea likely had little to no exposure to spice until coming to garreg mach#while the nobility classes might have got it as a treat every now and then#but considering southern adrestia actually goes pretty far south#it's possible certain spice plants could grow naturally there#(but since fodlan is based heavily off of europe i'd say the types of plants are more herbs than spices)#(think like southern mediterranean plants)#Dimitri#Claude#Edelgard#byleth#rhea
