Solid wood works is no longer as popular today as it was years ago. Some are discouraged by its massive appearance and heavy construction, others refuse to invest so much in wood works. On the other hand, those who have furnished their homes with a massive regret. Wood works made of raw wood is original, pleasant to the touch and has its typical scent. Another plus is its longevity. Statistically, beech wood works has a lifespan of 15 - 20 years, oak wood works up to 35 years. In order for such wood works to retain its properties and quality, it is necessary to pay more attention to it and learn how to take care of it properly.
Sensitive to climatic conditions
Raw wood is sensitive to climatic conditions. A healthy climate for solid wood works means a temperature of approximately 20 ° C and an air humidity in the range of 50 - 60% . It is not recommended to place it in rooms with underfloor heating that dries air. It should not be exposed to direct sunlight either, as direct sunlight may result in an uneven change in the color of the surface or damage the finish.
Surface treatment of solid wood works
It is not a massive massif. In addition to the use of different wood for production, the surface treatment is also different. Most often we can meet with a surface treatment in the form of varnish , wax and oil. Let's compare them for and against.
Varnished wood works
The wood works is usually lacquered with a mordant with a lacquer film. The lacquered surface, unfortunately, has a low resistance to chemicals. The solvent can easily destroy such a surface. However, the positive thing is the simple repair of such a surface. Damaged surfaces can be easily refreshed, restored and freed from mechanical damage.
Waxed wood works
This wood works is covered with a layer of wax and requires much more care than lacquered wood works. The wax that covers the surface of the wood can be easily damaged by heat, so it is not advisable to place hot objects on such wood works.
The wax is first dissolved in a solvent, and then coated on the surface of the wood works with a soft cloth or foam rubber. Prior to waxing, the wood works is impregnated with varnish or other penetration product. Finally, the wood works is polished. Polishing creates a scaly structure in the wax, which is very durable.
Oiled wood works
The oil-treated wood works retains its natural properties. After application and hardening of the oil, the wood remains silky matt, while the natural structure of the surface is highlighted. The oiled surface has a great advantage, because it can be revived at any time by a simple wipe with oil and a cotton cloth. If you want to have oiled wood works in a darker shade, just add the pigment designed for it and oil it.
Maintenance and care of solid wood works
Maintenance of lacquered wood works is very simple. The wood works must be cleaned with a damp, lint-free cloth and then wiped dry immediately. The cloth must not be wet! We do not use aggressive or abrasive cleaners. We use sprays and pastes designed directly for lacquered wood works. We apply them on a cloth, not directly on the wood works. The product used for the first time should be checked by rubbing a piece of wood works in a less visible place.
Wipe waxed wood works only with a dry , lint-free cloth, or it can be polished with a dry cloth. Do not use aggressive agents and polishes that contain solvents. Try to avoid exposing the wood works to water and moisture. If in contact with water, dry the surface immediately. Then just polish the surface with a dry cloth.
To restore the gloss and durability of the surface, we recommend the use of wax renovation products, which you can also use during routine maintenance. The wax is applied with a soft cloth and, after drying, polished with a dry cloth.
Wipe oiled wood works with a damp cloth with very mild soapy water. Never use concentrated or abrasive agents that are aggressive and could damage and damage the surface. We recommend painting the wood works with a cloth using a cloth every 2-3 months.
