A bittersweet reminiscence - part 1 | Sinclair brothers x Aunt reader
_____________________________
Summary: She dosen’t know what to think anymore. Every time she recalls her past, it all seems so depressingly pathetic, even more pathetic, considering the fact that she believed in something that was never there. The reality that she learns about having soon to be nephews through the newspaper felt like a slap to the face of the last hope she had for her brother to actually care for her.
Tumblr media
The first thing to break through the barrier of her forgotten history was the smell of brine and aged wood. Although she didn't frequently notice it in the clean, contemporary surroundings of her log home, the subtle, musty fragrance had brought the Sinclairs back to life today as she rummaged through a box of moth-eaten pictures. Not just in the past, but in the back of her mind, to a place she had never known existed. She was a toddler, a frail two-year-old, clinging to the railing of a ship, not a twenty-year-old woman, thinking about her life with a cold kind of acceptance. She could see the churning grey water that extended to the horizon, feel the chilly spray of the ocean on her cheek, and hear the ship creaking mournfully beneath her tiny boots. Her first memory was a picture—a blurry, dreamy sight.
The ship hadn't been a pleasant cruise, and she knew it with the conviction that only unfiltered, visceral memory could give. Her parents' excursion had been their last. She remembered a fleeting, hazy glimpse of her father's soft touch on her tiny back, her mother's loving smile, and then—nothing. Where her family had been, there was nothing but a black hole and a wide emptiness.
Her next vivid memory was of the metallic tang of terror, a strong, bitter taste on her tongue. Under Uncle Martin's supervision, this was the flavour of her childhood home. She could still see him, or at least the distorted image her memory had conjured up of him: a lanky, unkempt man with wild, bloodshot eyes who always smelt of stale beer and something faintly disagreeable. Martin, the "nutcase," as the neighbours muttered, was a human representation of disorder and a tornado of unpredictability. His anger awaited the slightest tremor to erupt, like a dormant volcano. As he strode through the home with a kitchen knife shining in his palm, the sound of his slamming doors, his booming rants, and the icy rustle of his footsteps filled the house. She recalled the cold fear that would engulf her heart upon seeing that flash of silver, the blind panic as she and Victor would rush to hide in the wet, dark recesses of their run-down house, their tiny bodies crammed together.
In her disharmonic life, her older brother Victor was a source of both solace and perplexity. In a way, he served as a silent barrier to keep her safe from their uncle's insanity. He was a mystery, though. Like the weather, his emotions fluctuated; on some days, he would go missing for hours before coming home long after the streetlights had turned a sickly yellow, his face a mask of tired indifference. His body tensed at the first sign of affection, making him a stronghold of isolation. She remembered fervently wanting to embrace him, to experience the warmth of brotherly love, but frequently her arms would be met with a chilly, aloof gaze, and his body would flinch away from her like a flaming flame. She was aware that he detested being touched. Her heart ached from the rejection, which was his physical dislike and disgust.
Then there were the other moments, the infrequent, priceless bursts of warmth. His presence was like a solid anchor amid the rough waters of their lives, especially when he let her put her forehead against his chest and his arm clumsily wrapped over her arms. The soft bear plush he had purchased her, a beautifully sown toy that felt like a gift in their otherwise empty lives, came back to her with a startling, heartbreaking clarity. She was aware that he had meticulously saved up the meagre money he made from working odd jobs around the neighbourhood for it, and the weight of that silent act of love weighed heavily on her. The times he shared his meagre meal with her, making sure she ate before him; the times he stood in front of her, a defiant wall against their uncle's drunken rage; the times he read to her from the tattered old books he found at the library, his voice soft and hesitant, a stark contrast to the harshness of their lives were all examples of similar moments.
Their normally gloomy, drab existence was linked with these times like golden threads. She frequently wondered about his contradictory personality, how he could be both distant and intensely protective, push her away and then embrace her close. Over the years, she had realised that it was a peculiar kind of bipolar disorder, a whirlwind of emotions that caused her heart to swell with love and hurt with bewilderment. Nevertheless, she had always felt that he loved her in spite of all his inconsistencies. He always made sure she was safe and had enough food, and she could sense it in the way he looked at her and the tiny, nearly indiscernible signs of affection he occasionally gave. He was her brother, and she loved him fiercely and unconditionally.
A greater, more urgent anguish, an unavoidable sense of desertion, came with remembering her brother. The only real family she had ever known, he had been a mainstay in her life for so long, and then... nothing. He simply vanished one day. A deafening quiet that had plagued her for years was left behind when they vanished into the ether. No explanation, no farewell, no note had been left. He had simply disappeared, leaving the woman feeling lost again in a world that had already taken away her parents.
She had called the authorities the moment she had realised it, and the police had done the usual, asking questions, filing reports along with eventually concluding that Victor was just another missing person, and that they had done the most they could, and that because he was at age, there wasn’t a lot they could do unless he resurfaced. It's been so long since she had last saw him, and she still felt the hollow ache of his absence. She had tried to trace him, tried to reach out to the few acquaintances he had had, only to find dead ends and unanswered questions. Had he gotten caught up in some trouble, had their uncle done something to him, was he even alive? The questions circled in her mind, year after year, refusing to abate. Why had he left? Had he finally gotten tired of her? She wouldn't be suprised, he always did complain that she could be a pain in the ass, that she talked to much, that she was annoying, and so fourth.
To be honest, that's what she did conclude it to, and it wasn't exactly confirmed until she had found that newspaper article. Despite that she never did keep a copy of that article because she felt so betrayed and sad, she remembered the words so clearly.
Trudy and husband expecting first child. Making the announcement today at their home in Ambrose, the couple seemed overjoyed with the news of their impending family.
She remembered how she had stared at the newspaper, she recalled how she had started weakly laughing in disbelief, in shock, in tears. He may have looked different and older, but she could recognise her brother from anywhere, yet a part of her believed that everything was a dream. He was married, her brother was married to a woman she didn't even knew. And she was pregnant! She was going to become an aunt, and she wasn't even aware of it. Did this Trudy lass knew about her? Has Victor ever mentioned her? Will he tell his children about her?
Even though the answer shouldn't be clear, lady Sinclair already knew that wasn't even good questions. Of course he wasn't. Why would he? He never bothered telling her anything. Well screw him then! She didn't need him anymore, she never did need him, she did just fine without him! She didn't need him to tell her what to do, she didn't need him to tell her that she didn't have to go to college to get a decent job, he wasn't there when she got into her career as an engineer. Hell, he wasn't even there to teach her about how to become a proper adult. She survived on her own for so long, so why should she care what he was doing now? She bets he loves his new family much more than his original one, that's why he probably had no contact with her, cause he might have wanted to start fresh. He might have... He might have...
She could feel the tears start to build up in her eyes as she put both of her palms on her face, her cries being muffled as if she had trained herself to not make a single sound, as a reflex that can not be undone. She was going to be alright, she knew it in her heart, but that did not cease it from aching. Her breathing and cloudy mood eventually set itself to normal once again, she wasn't entirely alone. Sure, her family was non-existent in her life, and that was alright, there was nothing she could do about it, however, she does have her friends and aquintences. The folks from the village she was currently residing in, those people were enough for her. Her job, intrests, and people she knew was enough to continue existing in this unfair world.
She looked down in front of her, a little bit to the side of the table, was her Baker boy hat, slightly dirty from usage but nonetheless well kept. She took a soothing sigh, as she reached out to put it on, patiently standing up as she began to leave her home. Wanting to visit Miche for some good old coffee break, perhaps he has some cookies to spare too? She should probably call him before she leaves.

Author's note: Is it smart to write a whole new series fanfic whilst I'm working on three others at the same time? No, its really not. Do I care though? Nope! I've been thinking about this for a while now, and since nobody else had done it yet, this could be my own AU. I'm planning on focusing more about the aunt at first, and then eventually let the brothers meet her to have this awkwardly family reunion. I hope you'll enjoy this while it lasts.

Can Okoume Face Veneer Be Used for Both Interior and Exterior Applications?
When it comes to choosing the right wood veneer for projects, few options are as versatile and visually appealing as Okoume face veneer. Known for its unique blend of strength, beauty, and flexibility, Okoume is a popular choice for a range of applications. But one question often comes up: can Okoume face veneer be used for both interior and exterior applications? Let’s dive in and explore everything you need to know about this unique veneer, how it can fit into different spaces, and whether it’s suitable for outdoor use.
Understanding Okoume Face Veneer: A Unique Choice
Okoume veneer, sourced primarily from Gabon, is cherished worldwide for its distinctive look and adaptability. Known for its light pinkish-brown hue, fine grain, and smooth texture, Okoume can add an elegant touch to furniture, cabinetry, walls, and more. Its appeal doesn’t stop at aesthetics. Okoume is also prized for its:
Lightweight nature – It’s much lighter than other hardwoods, making it easy to work with.
Durability – Okoume face veneer is highly durable, which is why it’s often used in marine plywood and exterior-grade products.
Flexibility Because it’s easy to manipulate, it’s often used in furniture making and construction projects that require intricate designs.
The question remains: can this beautiful veneer withstand both interior and exterior environments? The answer isn’t black and white, so let’s look at the factors that come into play.
Is Okoume Face Veneer Suitable for Interior Use?
For interior applications, Okoume veneer is a top choice. Its visual appeal alone is enough to make it desirable for indoor furniture and decorative projects. The light color and fine grain bring a touch of elegance to any space, whether it’s a cozy living room, a sleek kitchen, or a luxurious office.
Benefits of Using Okoume Veneer Indoors
Aesthetically Versatile: Its warm tones and soft grain pattern make it versatile for various design styles, from traditional to contemporary.
Moisture Control: When used indoors, Okoume face veneer is shielded from constant exposure to moisture, which keeps it from warping, swelling, or cracking over time.
Long-lasting Durability: Indoors, Okoume veneer can easily maintain its appearance for years with minimal upkeep, especially if it’s properly sealed and polished.
Ease of Application: Okoume veneer is easy to cut, shape, and finish, making it ideal for designers, woodworkers, and homeowners who want to create unique pieces with a soft yet luxurious finish.
Cost-Effective and Eco-Friendly: Compared to solid wood options, veneer provides a sustainable and cost-effective choice. Since veneer is a thin layer of wood, it uses less timber, reducing environmental impact without compromising quality.
Given these benefits, it’s no wonder that Okoume veneer is widely used for interior elements like furniture, wall panels, cabinets, and ceilings. Its versatility and light color make it easy to match with other materials, from metals to darker woods. But what happens when Okoume veneer is taken outdoors?
Okoume Face Veneer in Exterior Applications: What to Consider
Okoume face veneer can, in certain situations, be used for exterior applications. However, using it outside requires a bit more planning, care, and protection due to its natural properties. Here’s what to consider if you’re thinking about using Okoume veneer for outdoor projects.
Why Okoume Veneer Needs Extra Protection Outdoors
While Okoume veneer is durable, it’s still a natural wood product, and wood is prone to weathering from moisture, sunlight, and temperature fluctuations. Okoume doesn’t have the same level of natural resistance to the elements as some other hardwoods, like teak or ipe, which means it needs to be treated and maintained to stand up to the outdoors.
Tips for Using Okoume Veneer Outdoors
If you’re set on using Okoume face veneer in an outdoor project, there are ways to make it work effectively:
Choose High-Quality Marine-Grade Okoume Plywood: For exterior applications, Okoume plywood is a better choice than standard veneer. Marine-grade Okoume plywood is made specifically for outdoor use and can handle more moisture and temperature changes than untreated veneer alone. It’s often used in boat building for this very reason.
Apply a High-Quality Sealant: Coating Okoume veneer with a top-grade sealant is essential. This helps shield it from moisture and UV rays, reducing the risk of warping, cracking, or discoloration. Some sealants also offer UV protection, which will slow down the color fading and keep the veneer looking fresh.
Routine Maintenance: Unlike interior wood, outdoor Okoume veneer needs regular maintenance. Reapplying the sealant every year or two can extend its life and keep it looking its best.
Consider Shaded Areas: If you’re using Okoume veneer in an area that’s exposed to direct sunlight, expect some color fading over time. Placing the veneer in a shaded or covered area can help preserve its natural color longer and reduce wear from sun exposure.
Opt for a Protective Finish: Adding a protective finish over the veneer not only adds an extra layer of defense but can also bring out its natural beauty. Certain finishes can enhance the wood’s grain and color, giving it a polished look suitable for outdoor décor and even outdoor furniture.
Ideal Exterior Uses for Okoume Veneer
With the right precautions, Okoume veneer can work for certain outdoor applications, such as:
Patio and Garden Furniture: Okoume veneer can add an elegant touch to patio furniture. Just ensure it’s sealed properly, and it’s in a shaded spot.
Covered Pergolas or Gazebos: These covered structures offer some natural protection from the elements, making them ideal for Okoume veneer. It can be used to create decorative wall panels, cabinets, or seating elements.
Decorative Fascia: Using Okoume veneer for decorative exterior elements, like fascia or trim, can add a touch of sophistication to the outdoor look without exposing it to high amounts of moisture or sunlight.
Okoume Veneer: A Flexible and Elegant Choice for Both Indoors and Outdoors
So, can Okoume face veneer be used for both interior and exterior applications? The answer is yes—with some preparation. It’s a versatile and beautiful material that brings elegance to indoor spaces and, with the right treatment, can handle certain outdoor applications too. For those who value aesthetic appeal and are willing to take extra precautions for exterior use, Okoume veneer is a worthy choice.
When used indoors, Okoume face veneer shines as a beautiful, low-maintenance material. Its warm color and fine grain make it a favorite among interior designers, homeowners, and craftsmen. Outdoors, it requires a bit more attention to maintain its beauty, but the effort can be worth it if you’re looking for a wood product that brings style to your exterior.

This #design by @noasantos displays a spacious sanctuary made from stone and wood.
Both elements forge the #architecture of this home and its interiors to form a soothing balance between a soft and organic aesthetic and the firmness of the sleek materials that give this interior a modern touch.
The geometrical precision with which the decorative elements and #furniture have been arranged creates a magnetic effect that draws our gaze to specific focal points.
In the living room, the attention is focused upon the contemporary fireplace that extends into a statuesque wall panel that seems to travel beyond the wooden ceiling boards.
Meanwhile, the #diningroom exhibits at its center a sturdy stone table with curved legs matched with a wooden set of minimalist chairs that enhance the grandeur of the dining table.
We observe the same composition in each room featuring the rawness of wood in the legs of coffee tables, the kitchen shelving, stools and the legs of side tables to create a contrast against the soft white fabric of the furniture.

All of this is set upon the solid base of light grey polished stone where light can find the perfect passage to illuminate this calming interior.
