SAIL 2018 - Valdettaro restaura Vera Mary, la goletta di Re Giorgio V - 2018
15 marzo 2018 - L’ultracentenario cantiere Valdettaro della Spezia sta restaurando Vera Mary, la goletta del 1932 lunga 22 metri acquistata all’epoca da Re Giorgio V d’Inghilterra. Le maestranze del cantiere stanno anche lavorando al risanamento dell’albero in legno di Sylvia, un Camper & Nicholsons del 1925. Presenti in cantiere anche numerosi scafi storici, da Astra del 1928 a Fantasia del 1949 e Coppelia del 1951. È entrata al Cantiere Valdettaro alle Grazie di Portovenere verso la fine del 2017 e tornerà a navigare nel 2019. Si tratta di Vera Mary, goletta aurica lunga 22 metri varata nel 1932 presso il cantiere inglese Berthon Boat Company di Lymington su progetto di J.M. Soper. La barca venne costruita in soli sei mesi per l’industriale Mervyn Hamilton-Fletcher, membro del Royal Yacht Squadron di Cowes, che la chiamò con il nome della moglie. Fino al 1935 navigò nel Solent sperimentando vari armi velici, come documentato più volte dalle immagini di Beken of Cowes, il fotografo di vela più famoso della storia. Nel 1935 Vera Mary fu acquistata da Re Giorgio V d’Inghilterra per donarla all’amico Sir Philip Hunloke, suo istruttore di vela nonché skipper dello yacht reale Britannia e Commodoro del Royal Yacht Squadron. Nel corso dei decenni successivi ha fatto base a Sanremo e Cannes, ha esplorato il Mediterraneo, è stata rinominata Franik II e Hawaita, è appartenuta a diversi armatori di nazionalità inglese e francese e svolto attività di charter. All’inizio degli anni Novanta ha subìto un primo esteso refitting presso il cantiere inglese Hamble Yacht Service e nel 1991 ha regatato alla Nioularge di Saint Tropez. Nell’ottobre del 2017 il Cantiere Valdettaro guidato da Ugo Vanelo, proprio nell’anno del centenario, non poteva farsi miglior regalo se non quello di acquisire l’importante commessa di un restauro che rimarcasse la storicità di una realtà da sempre legata alla tradizione del refitting di scafi in legno. Vera Mary è stata infatti trasferita dalla Germania, dove erano stati già completati i lavori di sostituzione di una parte delle ordinate in quercia e dei bagli in rovere di Slavonia, presso il cantiere Valdettaro alle Grazie di Portovenere, in provincia della Spezia. Una volta rimessata al coperto si è proceduto alla rinvergatura delle tavole del fasciame in legno di teak per l’opera morta e pitch pine per l’opera viva, dello spessore di 3,5 centimetri, impiegando oltre 900 metri di listelli anch’essi in teak opportunamente sagomati e inseriti tra un corso di fasciame e l’altro. Risanati inoltre alcuni bagli della tuga in teak, rialzata di 11 centimetri per ottenere una maggiore abitabilità interna e un paramare del pozzetto più protetto. L’ossatura di Vera Mary è composta da circa 50 ordinate di distanza variabile 28 a 30 centimetri, 2 serrette che corrono da poppa a prua per tutta la lunghezza della barca, madieri in acciaio e rinforzi anch’essi in acciaio per gli attacchi delle lande. Nei mesi successivi si procederà al ripristino degli arredi interni, parzialmente recuperati e riassemblati proprio accanto allo scafo, alla posa della nuova coperta in doghe di teak dello spessore di 15 millimetri, che sommate all’interposto compensato da 25 millimetri eleveranno a 4 centimetri lo spessore del ponte.
