Man's World - Part 5
Masterlist
Tumblr media
I'm in a writing mood lately and I'm choosing not to question it. This is a bit of a filler chapter before the real action starts.
We walk toward the edge of camp, where trucks, buses, and shipping containers are arranged into a sort of perimeter wall. Most people at least nod to Miss Ally in greeting; the soldiers all greet her by name - most with the reverence with which they’d greet a military commander (the Boss).
The tents become sparser the further from the center of camp we move until we approach the double-ring of trucks, RVs, trailers, and shipping containers that mark the perimeter of camp - a makeshift wall for our little city, designed as much to keep August’s people in as it is to protect from outsiders.
There are gunmen on the roofs of some of the massive vehicles. Somewhere nearby, Depeche Mode is playing on a crank radio.
“Sy!” Miss Ally calls out as we approach a loose group of soldiers.
The biggest one turns our way. “Miss Ally.” He walks in our direction. He’s tall and muscular and has cropped brown hair and a vigorous beard. Judging by his bearing, he’s some hybrid of a football player, a Navy Seal, and a frat boy at an old Southern university.
As he comes closer, I think I recognize him, but I would have remembered someone looking like that. Probably some weird side effect of the concussion.
“Sy,” Miss Ally says again when he’s in front of us. Didn’t Stiva mention someone named Sy?
He pushes his sunglasses up, resting them on the top of his head. He looks even more familiar now. “Good morning, Miss Ally. What can I do for you?”
“I’d like you to put this young lady to work in one of the stock trucks.”
Sy crosses his arms over his chest as he takes stock of me. “You the one that shot at the Boss during the last raid?”
“Mm-hmm,” Miss Ally says.
Sy nods. “Good. Keep him on his toes.” He extends a large, rough hand. “Syverson.”
I take it and shake once before letting it drop. “Lilah.”
He turns and starts walking without giving me any warning first and I nearly have to run to catch up.
“You pregnant or something?” he asks once we’ve cleared the densest part of camp.
“What?”
“I’m trying to figure out why August hasn’t killed you, since you tried to kill him.”
August, he said, not the Boss.
“I think he just wants to sleep with me.”
Syverson gives me a quick once-over. “That tracks.”
It hits me then – who it is that he resembles.
“Are you and August related?”
Syverson glances at me again. “Cousins.”
It’s not that they look similar, exactly, though the likeness is uncanny - the only tangible differences that I can see are that Syverson is slightly more muscular and August’s hair is a little darker. Their demeanors are entirely different, enough that it counteracts the physical resemblance.
I have the urge to explain all this to him, but an image of Jack’s bored, disinterested face flashes before me, and I decide against it.
We head to the outskirts of camp, where lorry trucks, RVs, U-Hauls, buses, campers, and even a handful of humvees have been arranged in a double-ring that encompasses the whole camp in a makeshift border wall designed as much to keep our people in as it is to keep strangers out.
Depeche Mode is playing from a crank radio beside one of the gunmen keeping watch atop a lorry. A couple of mechanics are cursing  as they attempt to repair a busted solar panel atop an RV. There are a few mean-looking dogs on chains scattered about.
Syverson isn’t sure exactly what he wants me to do yet so he sort of just turns me loose.
They don’t seem to mind me wandering between the vehicles and investigating what’s inside. School buses packed with books - school books in one, historical nonfiction in another. One of them is just for children’s books, stuffed with multiple copies of Bunnicula and Percy Jackson and even Twilight.
There are a few “lady trucks” as the soldiers call them, packed with enough pads, tampons, and menstrual cups to last all the women in camp at least a year. It’s kind of nice, in a weird way, that they thought to stock up on period products. I doubt it was August’s idea, but the trucks’ very existence is proof that the powers that be do care about women’s wellbeing. Kind of.
Guards linger near the more important vehicles, the ones that house “valuables,” which I assume means medical supplies and ammo and such. I don’t ask for details or to look inside; they’d say no if I did anyway.
I’m poking around in a school bus that has coincidentally been turned into one of several makeshift libraries, when August Walker shows up.
“Bossman!” somebody calls, drawing everyone’s attention. The men all straighten up where they’re standing. They don’t salute as he walks past but they do dip their heads in respect as he goes by. Almost like bowing. Almost like he’s a king.
I hate how my heart thumps as he comes close enough for me to make out his features. I’m disgusted at his behavior this morning and for his general dickishness last night but Miss Ally is right. I’m attracted to him. There’s no use denying it.
Syverson steps closer to him and they start talking. I can’t hear very well but the gist of the conversation comes through. He wants to pack up camp by the end of the week. It’s time to move on.
I creep to the front of the bus toward the open door to so I can hear better while doing my best to stay out of sight.
“The place is dried up,” August says to Sy.
The others are listening like me but pretending that they aren’t – also like me.
“We’ve gotten anything and anyone that could possibly be of use,” August continues. “We’ll do one last sweep through the suburbs tomorrow night.”
“How many guys do you want?” Sy asks.
“Five. It’ll just be escort duty while a couple of Miss Ally’s people poke around. I’ll lead myself.” And then he raises his obscenely large hand, finger pointed right at me though he doesn’t turn to look. “You’re coming too,” he tells me.
Syverson looks my way, even though his cousin does not. He gives me another once-over.
“Me?” My voice is nightmarishly shrill. How the fuck did he even know I was here? Did he plant a tracker on me while I was asleep or something? “I’m – I won’t be of any use. I thought we established that.”
“You’ll have to earn your keep somehow,” August drawls. “You’ve chosen not to take advantage of the easier option, but if you change your mind, it’s still on the table.”
Syverson tamps down a smirk, raising his eyebrows as he turns to see my reaction.
I can feel my ears heating with the force of my anger. My first thought is, how can I inflict the same harm on him that he has inflicted on me? My second thought is how embarrassing this is for him to say in front of his men. And then I think that I hate all fucking men, but especially this one.
“You must be around a lot of women that will settle for substandard men,” I finally say.
I see eyes widening and smirks growing on the soldier’s faces but they keep trying to pretend that they aren’t listening – except for Sy, who grins and swivels back to his cousin to see his retort.
August is smirking slightly as I step out of the bus and start walking back towards the center of camp. As I brush by him, August murmurs, “If you want proof of what I can do, I’ve got no shortage of witnesses.”
That just pisses me off.
That night, I dream of August. Of myself in that other woman’s position. I wake up sweating and wet and frustrated with myself. How am I going to get through this supply run?

As promised last week, we’re taking a brief break from the Chill Valicer save shenanigans (and that is what I’m calling it now) to show off a build I did over a couple of Saturdays in January -- the “Slip 42 Camper!” As you might imagine, this was built on the “Slip 42″ lot in StrangerVille, and it’s my first attempt at a tiny home! :) I mean, you’ve probably noticed at this point that most of the houses I build tend to be big and sprawling, because I like to give my Sims loads of space to work with. However, that sort of house wasn’t going to work on this small lot, and anyway I wanted to challenge myself. And build a house that looked like it fit in better with the debug RVs and campers parked around it than the prebuilt one. *nods* I did try experimenting with a curved wall for the front bit, but none of the windows that fit on curved walls really looked right, so I ended up going with the octagonal front instead -- it’s just easier. I still think it turned out pretty good, even if I was never able to get a proper “trailer” to go under it (someone was nice enough to upload the debug ones on the Gallery, but even resizing it didn’t make it fit properly. At least I was able to find some tires using the cheat and put them to the side to make it feel like it had the wheels taken off it at some point!) Features of the house include --
-->A solar-panel roof and a water collector -- while I didn’t go with adding the “Off the Grid” lot challenge because the only good ceiling lights I could find very much need the grid, it’s supposed to FEEL like it’s off the grid, at least.
-->A lovely front lawn with a wood-working bench, a telescope, a seating area with a drinks tray, your laundry essentials (the hamper’s set up just outside the window, under the awning), and two vertical planters for aspiring gardeners. Oh, and a bicycle for your transportation needs
-->A mini-kitchen with seating for two at a bar-style table
-->A bookshelf and door-side ottoman for reading
-->A pair of bunk beds for a Sim and their friend
-->A small bathroom with toilet, sink, and in-wall shower
-->An easel for the aspiring artist
-->And a bush for woohooing or fertilizing in the back left corner :p
It’s classed as a micro-home, so it has all the Tiny Living benefits (yes, even with the front lawn -- the fences don’t connect to actually form a room, so that doesn’t count toward the footprint!), and it comes with the Sunny Aspect, Homey, and Natural Light lot traits. According to the Gallery, it should cost about $13,448, so it should work as a starter home for one or two Sims! You can find it, as usual, under my username of AliceNVictor if you want to download it. :)
Next time -- back to the Valicer trio, with a Tuesday that is mostly about gardening! See you then!

FREE - RV Solar Calculator for Informed Solar System Configuration
Tumblr media
by Richard Gastmeier Welcome to our RV solar calculator, a free tool designed to help you estimate the size of the solar panels you will need to replenish your RV battery bank. This will ensure that you have sufficient solar power generation to supply the daily power requirements of your RV electrical system..... Our RV Solar Calculator Welcome to our RV solar calculator, a free tool designed to help you estimate the size of the solar panels you need to replenish your RV battery bank. Ensure that you have sufficient solar power generation to supply the daily power requirements of your RV electrical system. I hope you read my article on RV solar panels. If you did, you understand the different types of panels and their pros, cons, and limitations. If not, take the time to find the best solar panel type for your needs and budget. Now, it's time to determine the quantity and capacity of the panels you need for your RV solar array. To do that, calculate how much power your coach uses when not plugged into shore power. Then, a conversion needs to be performed to translate that total power consumption to a per-panel capacity based on the number of panels in the array and the estimated peak sun hours you will have available. RV Solar Calculator See below the calculator for detailed instructions. * Use one of the free solar calculator below in the article to get personalized solar estimates for your location. How to use the RV Solar Calculator to Choose the Correct RV Solar Panels In the first part of the calculator, for every appliance you intend to power on board your motorhome or travel trailer, enter the quantity of each one and the amount of time you estimate you will have them running on an average day. This will result in a total of your daily power usage. Next, enter the number of solar panels you plan to have on the coach, the type of batteries you will be charging, and the type of solar panel you are considering. The type of battery and panel is needed because battery types have different charging efficiencies, and solar panels have different generating efficiencies. The calculator also needs to know the estimated Peak Sun Hours (PSH) you have available where your RV will be traveling. See below for some online peak sun hour estimators/calculators. The calculator will return the wattage rating for each panel in the array needed to replenish the batteries over the day. I recommend oversizing this number when you decide on panels to have some headroom for excess usage or electrical additions to the coach. Note: For the first step, we have used wattage values slightly higher than the average for each load in this RV solar calculator. However, it would help if you double-checked each wattage rating on your appliances..... Read More... Read the full article

Seals and seams around windows, doors, and vents are prone to wear and tear over time. If they crack or degrade, water can seep into your RV, leading to mold and structural damage.
Inspect seals and seams at least twice a year.
Use a sealant designed for RVs to repair any cracks or gaps.
Applying a protective RV cover can also prevent these areas from constant exposure to the elements.
3. Maintain Your RV’s Tires
Tire maintenance is crucial for road safety and the overall performance of your RV.
Check the tire pressure regularly, especially before long trips. Underinflated tires can cause blowouts, while overinflated tires can wear unevenly.
Inspect your tires for signs of wear, cracks, or bulges.
Rotate the tires and replace them as needed, based on the manufacturer’s recommendations.
When parked for extended periods, use an RV cover with tire covers to prevent UV damage and dry rot.
4. Service the Engine and Generator
Just like your car, your RV’s engine and generator need regular maintenance to ensure peak performance.
Change the oil and filter based on the manufacturer’s guidelines.
Check coolant levels, belts, hoses, and the battery to ensure everything is functioning properly.
Running the generator regularly when the RV is in storage will help prevent buildup in the fuel system.
5. Clean and Treat Your Water System
Your RV’s water system is essential for comfort during your trips. To keep it clean and operational:
Sanitize the freshwater system before your first trip of the season.
Check for leaks and ensure that all connections are secure.
Use antifreeze designed for RV water systems if you plan to store your RV in cold weather.
6. Use an RV Cover for Long-Term Storage
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to maintain your RV is to use a high-quality RV cover. Covers help protect your RV’s exterior, tires, and mechanical components from the elements, reducing the risk of damage during long-term storage. By keeping your RV covered when not in use, you can prevent:
UV damage to the paint and interior.
Water leaks from rain or snow buildup.
Dirt, dust, and debris from accumulating on the roof and sides.
7. Regularly Clean and Lubricate Moving Parts
From the awning to the slide-outs and doors, your RV has several moving parts that require regular attention.
Clean and lubricate these parts to ensure smooth operation.
Inspect them for rust or damage, especially after long periods of inactivity.
8. Test the Electrical System
Your RV’s electrical system powers everything from the lights to the appliances. To avoid electrical failures:
Test the battery, circuit breakers, and fuses regularly.
Inspect the power cords and outlets for signs of wear.
Ensure your solar panels, if you have them, are clean and working efficiently.
Final Thoughts
Regular maintenance is the key to keeping your RV in top condition for years to come. Whether it’s inspecting the roof, maintaining the tires, or using an RV cover to protect it from the elements, these tasks will help you avoid costly repairs and extend the life of your RV. Taking the time to care for your vehicle will ensure that your next adventure is safe, comfortable, and worry-free.

The Evolution of RV Trailers Over the Past 5 Years in the U.S. and Europe
In recent years, recreational vehicles (RVs) and travel trailers have seen remarkable growth and transformation, both in the United States and across Europe. Factors such as increasing consumer demand for outdoor experiences, shifting traveler preferences, and advancing technology have all contributed to the evolution of this vibrant industry. Below is an overview of key trends and developments observed over the last five years.
Tumblr media
1. Rising Popularity and Demand
United States
Surge in Domestic Tourism: The U.S. has long been a major market for RVs, but over the past half-decade, there has been a significant increase in first-time RV buyers. Partly fueled by a desire for safer, more flexible travel options—especially after global disruptions in travel—families and retirees have turned to RVs as a way to explore national parks and scenic byways.
Younger Demographics: Previously, the RV market was most associated with retirees seeking a leisurely cross-country lifestyle. Recently, however, Millennials and even Gen Z travelers have embraced the convenience and freedom of RV travel, attracted by remote work possibilities and the growing trend of “van life” or minimalistic living.
Europe
Expanding Market and Higher Demand: Although the market in Europe has historically been smaller than in the U.S., many Europeans now see travel trailers as an affordable and flexible alternative to traditional travel. Campgrounds and road-trip destinations have become increasingly popular from the Mediterranean coasts to the Scandinavian fjords.
Rise of Camper Vans and Compact Models: Due to narrower roads and denser city layouts, European consumers often favor smaller, more maneuverable camper vans and compact travel trailers. This trend has sparked innovation among European RV manufacturers, resulting in lightweight, space-efficient designs that appeal to a wider audience.
2. Technological Advancements and Innovations
Smart Systems and Connectivity
Wi-Fi and Mobile Integration: Modern RVs often come equipped with built-in Wi-Fi routers and advanced mobile connectivity, making it easier for travelers to work remotely or stay connected while on the road.
Smart Control Panels: Many new models feature integrated control panels that allow users to monitor energy consumption, water levels, and temperature settings, all from a smartphone or tablet. This technology enhances convenience and efficiency, appealing to a younger, tech-savvy market.
Sustainable Materials and Eco-Friendly Designs
Tumblr media
Solar Power and Energy Efficiency: Solar panels have become more common on RV rooftops in the U.S. and Europe, reducing reliance on traditional fuel-powered generators. Advances in battery technology also allow RV owners to operate off-grid for longer periods.
Lightweight Construction: To cut down on fuel consumption, manufacturers are adopting lightweight composite materials, ensuring better aerodynamics and improved handling. This focus on eco-conscious designs caters to increasingly environmentally aware consumers on both continents.
3. Shifts in Lifestyle and Use Cases
Work-from-Anywhere Culture
Remote Work Opportunities: As remote work has become more widespread, many professionals are capitalizing on the ability to work from anywhere with a stable internet connection. RV living has thus become a lifestyle choice, allowing people to merge their career with travel and personal freedom.
Digital Nomad Communities: New online communities and social media groups have formed, enabling RV owners to connect and share experiences about road trips, workspaces, and best practices for remote living.
Family and Multi-Generational Travel
Enhanced Amenities: Modern RVs offer amenities like larger refrigerators, microwaves, air conditioning, heating systems, and even washers/dryers in some high-end models. These comforts have broadened their appeal to families and older adults looking to maintain a standard of living while on the move.
Growing Rental Market: The rise of peer-to-peer rental platforms has made it easier for families to test out different RV types without a large upfront investment. This rental model has increased overall awareness and acceptance of the RV lifestyle in both the U.S. and Europe.
4. Market Growth and Economic Impact
U.S. Market Expansion
Record Sales: The last five years have seen record-breaking RV sales in the U.S., with industry reports indicating continuous year-over-year growth. Even pre-owned RVs have become more valuable, reflecting strong consumer demand.
Boost to Local Economies: States and small towns along popular road-trip routes have benefitted from increased tourism spending. Campgrounds, gas stations, and local attractions have all seen an uptick in visitors, contributing to local economic vitality.
European Growth and Infrastructure
Improved Campground Facilities: To accommodate increased travel trailer use, many European countries have invested in upgrading campsites with modern facilities—high-speed Wi-Fi, electric hook-ups, and sanitary stations—all of which have contributed to a more comfortable experience for travelers.
New Manufacturing Hubs: Regions like Germany, France, and the UK have seen a boost in RV manufacturing, from artisanal camper conversions to large-scale production lines. This has led to job creation and new opportunities within the European RV supply chain.
5. Future Outlook
Continued Innovation: Technology will likely continue to drive the RV industry forward, including the potential integration of electric tow vehicles and further improvements in solar and battery systems.
Sustainability Focus: With environmental concerns on the rise, manufacturers in both the U.S. and Europe are exploring ways to reduce the ecological footprint of RV travel, from greener materials to more efficient engine designs.
Growth in Rental and Sharing Models: The popularity of camper-sharing platforms is expected to grow, making RV travel more accessible and attractive to new audiences who might not want to purchase a unit outright.
Conclusion
Over the past five years, RV trailers and travel vehicles have seen remarkable development in both the United States and Europe. Advancements in technology, an ever-expanding demographic of travelers, and evolving lifestyles have contributed to a robust market that shows no sign of slowing down. As manufacturers invest in innovative designs and eco-friendly solutions, and as more travelers embrace the freedom and flexibility of life on the road, it’s clear that the RV sector will remain a defining force in the global travel industry for years to come.

INDIANA
2024 Aug 28 (Wed) – We packed up and left Elkhart at 9:40.  It was just 2 and ½ hours to the Jefferson Township Park Campground in New Haven.  This is a small county fairground with maybe 6 to 8 camp spots.  We have electric and water hookups.  There is a dump station but for one night, I don’t think we will need it.  The campground is kind of far from town so we didn’t go anywhere.  And we don’t really need gas since we only drove 113 today and will drive 130 tomorrow to Ohio.
2024 Aug 27 (Tue) – The temperatures have shot up.  It was 93 degrees today!  I guess there’s some kind of system passing through the Midwest.  We spent the day inside, working on caravan and national muster prep.
The weirdest thing happened while we were doing the laundry.  At wash time, I put my bra in a net bag.  When the wash is done, I remove it and put it aside while the rest of the wash goes in the dryer.  I take it back to the trailer and hang it in the shower to dry.  Well, after I took my bra out of the washer, put it aside, and put the clothes in the dryer, I turned to get the bag and found it missing.  We looked between the washers, on the floor, and even in back of the washer but it couldn’t be found anywhere.  We even stopped the dryers and looked through the clothes there, but nothing.  After the clothes were dry and we had them back and folded at the RV, there was still no bra.  It’s as if it grew legs and just walked away.  Very weird.
2024 Aug 26 (Mon) – We packed up and left at 7:40 a.m. to bring our RV to Fun Town RV.  They will be looking at 3 issues we have with the rig and, hopefully, fix them.  We have a leak in the bedroom, the rubber seal on the living room slide keeps working itself out when we drive, and the solar control panel has an error code that we have not been able to clear.
While the rig was at the dealer, we went out to breakfast.  It took 3 tries before we found a place that was open.  It looked really skeevy outside but it was quite nice inside.  The meal was plentiful and good.  Afterward, we drove back to the campground and sat in the truck, waiting for a call to come pick up our RV.  At lunchtime, we drove to a Steak N Shake for burgers.  Sheba got a taste so she was happy, too.
We returned to the dealer at 4 p.m.  The mechanic told us he broke his key in the lock and so, he replaced the lock on the door.  He then told us what he did.  The slide had left-over glue and tar that was catching on the rubber seal.  He tried to scrape it all off then covered it with silver tape.  He thinks that solved the problem.  We’ll see the next time we ride on down the road.  The mechanic then told us that he found a small hole in the bedroom slide that might have been the cause of the leak.  He repaired that.  Lastly, he found a reset button on the bottom of the solar control box in the basement.  It is not easily visible and he had to call the vendor to discover it.  We will put a label there so we will know from now on.  He also told us that we need to keep the area clear so it can get some air.  We currently have it packed full with all the stuff we will be donating to SMART.  Paul later moved the stuff around.
2024 Aug 25 (Sun) – We drove 108 miles from Zeeland, MI, to the Elkhart Campground.  This is a very nice campground.  I even recommended it to Nita, who is looking for a site for the 2026 national muster.  Hopefully, they pick this campground.  It is laid out nice.  Has a nice smattering of trees.  Have over 350 campsites with full hookups and pull through sites.  The laundry room has 8 washers and 8 dryers, all in working order.
After set up, we drove to Fun Town RV to see where it is.  We will be bringing the RV there tomorrow to (hopefully) get a few things fixed on the rig.  When we got back, we did some laundry.

Adventures with a New RV
A few months ago we took our ‘new to us’ travel trailer out for our highly anticipated shakeout trip. The purpose for the trip was to find out how everything worked in our new trailer. We were so excited to get out and enjoy it. We deliberately chose a nearby provincial park, without hook ups, (no electricity, water, or sewage), so we could check out our newly installed solar panels. Armed with two brand new batteries, we were eager to see how we fared over the 4 nights. Unfortunately, it turned into the worst trip ever.
Tumblr media
This is our second travel trailer, and we had to live in our last one for 5 months during the pandemic when we returned home early and our house was rented out, so we’re not newbies to rv life. The first problem occurred when I turned on the water pump, filled the hot water tank, then turned on the hot water tank…and water stopped running. My husband frantically shouted, “turn off the water, it’s pouring out of the storage compartment.” Turns out the housing on our water pump had cracked, despite the trailer being winterized. Now, we don’t know if it was cracked when we bought it, or if it happened during our week of record breaking cold, (-15C), when we were away, so we figured this one was on us. A trip back to town and $165 later, Craig was back installing the new water pump, (in a small box with not much space for maneuvering).
Then on night one, we forgot to turn down the heater, (normally we do this to stop if from repeatedly coming on during the night as this is a big energy waster). The next morning, our batteries were dead. We were surprised by this quick drain, but we had both a brand new generator, and the new solar panels, so we figured we could make it through. That was not the case. To make a very long story short: two new batteries, a new solar panel, a new converter, and lots of cash later, things were fixed. The culprit: one of our brand new batteries had a dead cell, and it basically shorted out everything else. To add insult to injury, the front end of the truck started making weird noises as we were limping the trailer to the repair shop…the left front bearings had to be replaced.
Our second trip was a few weeks later. We did the 3 hour towing trip to the west coast of the Island. This is my favourite place in the entire world. We had full hookups, and perfect weather. What could go wrong?? Well, the other side of the front end went. At the end of our week, we made the 3 hour trip back, towing, while the truck noise got louder and louder. This time we paid the big bucks and had the entire front end rebuilt.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Another few weeks later, and we returned to the scene of the crime, Rathtrevor Beach, with a group of badminton friends. Again the trailer refused to accept a charge from the generator. We hooked the generator up successfully to another trailer, and we tried a different generator on our trailer. No dice. It turns out there was an open ground?? I don’t know that that means really, but whatever, it’s fixed now.
We’ve now done 2 great trips with the trailer: a 2 week trip to Invermere, via Christina Lake on the way out, and Cultus Lake on the way back, as well as a weekend trip to unite with my sisters and McGuire cousins. As we’re relaxing with the new trailer, we’re finally enjoying it. Here’s to many more adventures!

How to Hook Up RV Batteries in Parallel: Simple and Efficient Expert Guide
Tumblr media
by Richard Gastmeier Parallel connection refers to an electrical circuit configuration where components are connected across the same voltage points. This setup means that the voltage is constant across all components, but the total current is the sum of the currents through each component..... Introduction Welcome to the ultimate guide on learning how to hook up RV batteries in parallel! If you plan to extend your off-grid adventures or want more energy storage for your travel trailer, understanding how to connect your batteries properly is essential. In this comprehensive article, we'll walk through everything you need to know to get this set up right, starting from the reasons you might want parallel connections, the materials and tools you'll need for the job, step-by-step instructions on how to do it, and finally some essential safety tips and maintenance advice to ensure your setup serves you well over time. Understanding Series Connection When connecting RV batteries in series, you link their positive terminals to negative terminals, increasing overall voltage. For instance, if you connect two 12-volt AGM batteries in series, the total voltage of the batteries together in series becomes 24 volts. 12-Volt batteries in series can be beneficial in scenarios where higher voltage is required for specific RV appliances or systems. However, it's crucial to carefully assess your RV's electrical system compatibility with the increased voltage. Wiring RV batteries in series should be part of a thoughtful design to ensure seamless integration and effective power management for your RV adventures. Understanding Parallel Connections Parallel connection refers to an electrical circuit configuration where components are connected across the same voltage points. This setup means the voltage is constant across all components, but the total current is the sum of the currents through each component. In robotics, and especially recreational vehicles (RVs), parallel connections are essential for managing the energy distribution from the power source, such as a battery bank, to various subsystems. Parallel wiring allows multiple appliances and systems to operate independently without affecting each other's performance. It is common in RVs to use parallel connections for energy storage systems to increase the available amp-hour capacity while keeping the voltage constant, which is crucial for ensuring the proper operation of onboard electronics and appliances. For instance, if an RV has multiple 12-volt batteries connected in parallel, the total output will still be 12 volts. Still, the capacity (amp-hours) will increase, allowing for longer use of appliances before the batteries need to be recharged. This is essential for RV owners who spend extended periods off-grid and require a reliable power supply. Moreover, solar panels are often connected in parallel to provide a consistent charge to the battery bank without over-voltage, which is essential for the longevity of the RV battery and the system's safety. Overall, parallel connections are integral to the efficient design of an RV's electrical system. They help maintain consistent voltage levels, provide flexibility in the power system's design, and ensure that power is available to multiple systems simultaneously. Thus, any RV traveler must learn to hook up RV batteries in parallel. Benefits of Parallel Connection The advantages of parallel wiring RV batteries over wiring them in series are numerous. They include increased amp-hour capacity, which translates to longer usage time for your devices and appliances, and redundancy, ensuring that if one battery fails, the system can still function with the remaining RV batteries. Parallel connection is a common practice for increasing the power storage system's available amp-hour (Ah) capacity while maintaining the same voltage. This configuration involves connecting the positive terminals of two or more volt batteries and the negative terminals. The primary benefit of a parallel connection is the increased total capacity, which directly translates to a more extended power supply duration before needing recharging. This can be particularly advantageous for RV users who require more power for extended off-grid camping or for powering numerous or high-consumption devices. Another advantage of parallel battery configurations is redundancy. When two batteries are connected in parallel, if one fails, the other can still provide power, albeit at a reduced total capacity. This redundancy can provide security and reliability, ensuring that some power will be available even if one battery goes out of service. Moreover, a parallel connection can also contribute to a more balanced discharge and recharge of the batteries. When batteries are used and charged as a group, they tend to even out each other's charge states, leading to more uniform usage and potentially longer overall battery life. Lastly, it's important to remember that while amplifying the total Ah capacity, one must ensure that the connected batteries are of the same type, age, and capacity to prevent an imbalance in the charging and discharging cycles, which can detrimentally affect battery performance and lifespan.....
