NASA’s Europa Clipper Gets Set of Super-Size Solar Arrays
The largest spacecraft NASA has ever built for planetary exploration just got its ‘wings’ — massive solar arrays to power it on the journey to Jupiter’s icy moon Europa.
NASA’s Europa Clipper spacecraft recently got outfitted with a set of enormous solar arrays at the agency’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Each measuring about 46½ feet (14.2 meters) long and about 13½ feet (4.1 meters) high, the arrays are the biggest NASA has ever developed for a planetary mission. They have to be large so they can soak up as much sunlight as possible during the spacecraft’s investigation of Jupiter’s moon Europa, which is five times farther from the Sun than Earth is.
The arrays have been folded up and secured against the spacecraft’s main body for launch, but when they’re deployed in space, Europa Clipper will span more than 100 feet (30.5 meters) — a few feet longer than a professional basketball court. The “wings,” as the engineers call them, are so big that they could only be opened one at a time in the clean room of Kennedy’s Payload Hazardous Servicing Facility, where teams are readying the spacecraft for its launch period, which opens Oct. 10.
Flying in Deep Space
Meanwhile, engineers continue to assess tests conducted on the radiation hardiness of transistors on the spacecraft. Longevity is key, because the spacecraft will journey more than five years to arrive at the Jupiter system in 2030. As it orbits the gas giant, the probe will fly by Europa multiple times, using a suite of science instruments to find out whether the ocean underneath its ice shell has conditions that could support life.
Powering those flybys in a region of the solar system that receives only 3% to 4% of the sunlight Earth gets, each solar array is composed of five panels. Designed and built at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland, and Airbus in Leiden, Netherlands, they are much more sensitive than the type of solar arrays used on homes, and the highly efficient spacecraft will make the most of the power they generate.
At Jupiter, Europa Clipper’s arrays will together provide roughly 700 watts of electricity, about what a small microwave oven or a coffee maker needs to operate. On the spacecraft, batteries will store the power to run all of the electronics, a full payload of science instruments, communications equipment, the computer, and an entire propulsion system that includes 24 engines.
While doing all of that, the arrays must operate in extreme cold. The hardware’s temperature will plunge to minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 240 degrees Celsius) when in Jupiter’s shadow. To ensure that the panels can operate in those extremes, engineers tested them in a specialized cryogenic chamber at Liège Space Center in Belgium.
“The spacecraft is cozy. It has heaters and an active thermal loop, which keep it in a much more normal temperature range,” said APL’s Taejoo Lee, the solar array product delivery manager. “But the solar arrays are exposed to the vacuum of space without any heaters. They’re completely passive, so whatever the environment is, those are the temperatures they get.”
About 90 minutes after launch, the arrays will unfurl from their folded position over the course of about 40 minutes. About two weeks later, six antennas affixed to the arrays will also deploy to their full size. The antennas belong to the radar instrument, which will search for water within and beneath the moon’s thick ice shell, and they are enormous, unfolding to a length of 57.7 feet (17.6 meters), perpendicular to the arrays.
“At the beginning of the project, we really thought it would be nearly impossible to develop a solar array strong enough to hold these gigantic antennas,” Lee said. “It was difficult, but the team brought a lot of creativity to the challenge, and we figured it out.”
More About the Mission
Europa Clipper’s three main science objectives are to determine the thickness of the moon’s icy shell and its interactions with the ocean below, to investigate its composition, and to characterize its geology. The mission’s detailed exploration of Europa will help scientists better understand the astrobiological potential for habitable worlds beyond our planet.
Managed by Caltech in Pasadena, California, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory leads the development of the Europa Clipper mission in partnership with APL for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. APL designed the main spacecraft body in collaboration with JPL and NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, and Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. The Planetary Missions Program Office at Marshall executes program management of the Europa Clipper mission.
NASA’s Launch Services Program, based at Kennedy, manages the launch service for the Europa Clipper spacecraft, which will launch on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy.

Also eine Wattstunde.

Laser-powered rover to explore Moon’s dark shadows
ESA - European Space Agency patch. May 14, 2020 A laser light shone through the dark could power robotic exploration of the most tantalising locations in our Solar System: the permanently-shadowed craters around the Moon’s poles, believed to be rich in water ice and other valuable materials. ESA’s Discovery & Preparation programme funded the design of a laser system to keep a rover supplied with power from up to 15 km away while it explores some of these dark craters.
A peppering of craters at the Moon’s south pole
At the highest lunar latitudes, the Sun stays low on the horizon all year round, casting long shadows that keep sunken craters mired in permanent shadow, potentially on a timescale of billions of years. Data from NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, India’s Chandrayaan-1 and ESA’s SMART-1 orbiters show these ‘permanently shadowed regions’ are rich in hydrogen, strongly suggesting water ice can be found there. As well as having scientific interest, this ice would be valuable to lunar colonists, as a source of drinking water, oxygen for breathing, as well as a source of hydrogen rocket fuel. But to know for certain requires going into these darkened craters and drilling.
Laser powering Moon rover from lander
Any rover prospecting the shadowed regions would have to do without solar power, while contending with temperatures comparable to the surface of Pluto, down to –240°C, just 30 degrees above absolute zero. “The standard suggestion for such a situation is to fit the rover with nuclear-based radioisotope thermoelectric generators,” comments ESA robotics engineer Michel Van Winnendael. “But this presents problems of complexity, cost and thermal management – the rover could warm up so much that prospecting and analysing ice samples actually becomes impractical. “As an alternative, this study looked at harnessing a laser-based power system, inspired by terrestrial laser experiments to keep drones powered and flying for hours on end.”
Landing site and exploration options
The 10-month PHILIP, ‘Powering rovers by High Intensity Laser Induction on Planets’, contract was undertaken for ESA by Italy’s Leonardo company and Romania’s National Institute of Research and Development for Optoelectronics, coming up with a complete laser-powered exploration mission design. This included selecting a location for the mission lander, in a near-permanently sunlit region between the South Pole’s de Gerlache and Shackleton craters. This lander would host a solar-powered 500-watt infrared laser, which it would keep trained on a 250 kg rover as it entered the shadowed regions. The rover would convert this laser light into electrical power using a modified version of a standard solar panel, with photodiodes on the sides of the panel keeping it locked onto the laser down to centimetre-scale accuracy.
RAT rover by night
The study identified routes that would take the rover downward at a relatively gentle 10 degrees of slope while keeping it in the lander’s direct line of sight. The laser beam could be used as a two-way communications link, with a modulating retro-reflector mounted on the second of the rover’s solar panels, sending signal pulses in light reflected back to the lander. Guiding the project requirements, ESA has previously performed field tests at night in Moon-like Tenerife to simulate rover operations in permanent shadow. Michel adds: “With the PHILIP project completed, we are one step closer to powering rovers with lasers to explore the dark parts of the Moon. We’re at the stage where prototyping and testing could begin, undertaken by follow-up ESA technology programmes.” Related links: Leonardo: https://www.leonardocompany.com/en/home Romania’s National Institute of Research and Development for Optoelectronics: https://www.inoe.ro/ro/ GMV: http://www.gmv.com/en/ Space Engineering & Technology: http://www.esa.int/Enabling_Support/Space_Engineering_Technology ESA’s planetary robotics team: http://www.esa.int/Our_Activities/Space_Engineering_Technology/Automation_and_Robotics/About_the_Planetary_Robotics_Lab Images, Text, Credits: ESA/Leonardo/GMV/Fernando Gandía/SMART-1/AMIE camera team; image mosaic: M. Solar Panel Installation - How to Get Your Solar Panels Installed
Once you've purchased your solar panels, the next step is to get them installed. To make the process as simple as possible, you can purchase a video to help guide you through the installation process. Many videos offer step-by-step instructions, but some are more detailed. A comprehensive video will explain the basics and give you hands-on experience. During the installation, you should be aware of the different types of solar components, including power optimizers and micro-inverters. To gather more awesome ideas, see here to get started.
The installation process typically involves moving electrical panels and setting up a work area in the attic. Some solar installers also move furniture and other belongings in order to accommodate their equipment. Make sure to clean up the flooring in the temporary work area before you sign a contract. Your solar installer will set up ladders and scaffolding to access the roof, and may provide safety ropes, as required by local codes. You should also be aware of the various safety measures and considerations before allowing them into your home. You can learn more about solar panel here.
The overall cost of solar panel installation depends on the size and number of panels you have installed. The more solar panels you have, the more you'll save. You'll pay approximately $3.50 per watt for solar panels, and higher wattages will cost more. The investment will pay off in approximately 8 years. Depending on your needs, you may receive tax credits, rebates, or other incentives. The process is surprisingly easy.
The wiring process should be completed correctly. If you have multiple solar systems, you need a backfeed breaker to feed power back to the utility grid. Your main breaker panel should have a backfeed breaker, which is installed on the opposite end of the panel from the one used for the grid input. During the installation process, you may have to rearrange some of the existing circuits to accommodate the new solar backfeed breaker. You should also install a Tandem Breaker, which is the electrical component for a single slot on the breaker panel. This breaker is different from a 120/240-volt multiphase breaker. Kindly visit this website https://homeguides.sfgate.com/mini-solar-panel-79615.html for more useful reference.
Before you hire a solar installer, you should consult an engineer. They will look at the roof and electrical system to determine whether they are compatible with your solar energy system. Then, once you have signed a contract, they will come to your home to inspect the solar panels and check their installation. Make sure the roof is sturdy and strong enough to support the weight of the solar panels. The engineer can also tell you if you need a special mounting system for your flat roof.
A single solar panel can cost between $250 and $600. The price depends on how many panels you want installed and on the wattage of each panel. If you need only one or two panels, consider purchasing fewer but higher-wattage panels. The size of the panels and their placement will also affect the cost. This is why choosing the right solar panel manufacturer is extremely important. It will make the process of solar panel installation as smooth as possible.
