How Solar Canopies and EV Chargers Can Modernise Your Car Park
As the global push for sustainable energy solutions intensifies, businesses are increasingly looking for ways to modernise their facilities while cutting down on carbon emissions. Car parks—an essential yet often overlooked component of many properties—offer a unique opportunity to embrace this shift. Solar canopies combined with carpark electric vehicle charging Sydney represent an innovative solution that not only modernises car parks but also contributes to significant energy savings and environmental impact.
In this extended guide, we’ll explore the many ways in which integrating solar canopies and EV chargers can transform a car park into a smart, green, and future-proof space. Whether you're managing a shopping centre, corporate office, public facility, or residential complex, this article will help you understand the substantial benefits and the future potential of these modern technologies.
1. Turning Unused Space Into a Renewable Power Plant
One of the key benefits of installing solar canopies is the ability to turn an otherwise passive car park into an energy-generating powerhouse. Traditional car parks occupy vast spaces, often exposed to sunlight all day long. Instead of letting this sunlight go to waste, solar canopies allow you to harness this renewable energy.
By installing solar panels over parking bays, you can capture the energy of the sun and convert it into electricity that can be used on-site or fed back into the grid. These canopies do not take up additional land since they use the existing parking space footprint, making them an efficient use of space.
Energy Uses for the Captured Solar Power
Powering on-site facilities: The electricity generated by solar panels can be used to power the lighting, security cameras, and even air conditioning systems within nearby buildings. This can significantly reduce the energy costs of operating your property.
EV charging stations: The captured energy can directly power EV chargers, making it a closed-loop system where solar power fuels electric cars.
Grid integration: Any excess electricity generated can be fed back into the grid, allowing property owners to take advantage of feed-in tariffs and even generate income by selling surplus energy to utility companies.
2. Enhanced Aesthetic and Functional Value
Solar canopies provide more than just energy—they also add functional and aesthetic value to your car park. Unlike traditional open-air parking lots, solar canopies offer shade and protection from the elements. Vehicles are shielded from intense sunlight, rain, and snow, enhancing the comfort of your customers or employees. This added protection can also extend the lifespan of vehicles by preventing sun damage and corrosion.
Visually, solar canopies offer a sleek, modern appearance. Their cutting-edge design can elevate the look of your property, setting it apart from competitors and making it more attractive to visitors, tenants, and customers. Some companies even brand the canopies with their logos or corporate colours to enhance their visibility and reputation as eco-friendly businesses.
3. Attracting Eco-Conscious Consumers and Tenants
As climate change awareness grows, businesses and consumers are becoming more selective about who they engage with. Offering EV charging stations demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and positions your business as a leader in adopting green technology. Studies have shown that eco-conscious customers are more likely to support companies with sustainable initiatives, and offering solar-powered EV charging could become a unique selling point for your brand.
For commercial properties, retail outlets, and corporate offices, offering EV charging stations can attract a higher class of tenants and employees who prioritise sustainability. With the rapid rise in EV adoption, the availability of charging infrastructure is fast becoming an essential feature for both residential and commercial buildings. Employees with electric vehicles will appreciate the convenience of charging their cars while they work, and customers will see your business as forward-thinking and environmentally responsible.
Building Customer Loyalty
Charging convenience: Providing EV chargers in your car park encourages customers to spend more time at your facility. As their cars charge, they may choose to browse your store, eat at your restaurant, or conduct meetings on-site, generating more revenue.
Attracting the EV market: The number of EV owners is rising quickly, and being one of the few places offering convenient charging stations in your area could make your property a destination for this demographic.
4. Lowering Energy Costs and Generating New Revenue Streams
By installing solar canopies, you’re not only reducing your reliance on grid electricity but also generating renewable energy that can dramatically lower operational costs. The energy harnessed by your solar panels can directly power your building’s lighting, security, or heating and cooling systems, reducing your monthly energy bills. Over time, this can lead to substantial savings, allowing businesses to reinvest those funds elsewhere.
Furthermore, offering paid EV charging services can create an entirely new revenue stream for property owners. As electric vehicle adoption continues to rise, demand for charging stations is increasing. By providing this service, your car park becomes a valuable charging hub for EV drivers. You can set rates for charging, and depending on usage, this can become a significant source of additional income.
Revenue from Feed-In Tariffs
Another way to monetise solar energy is through feed-in tariffs (FIT). Many governments and utility providers offer incentives to property owners who generate renewable energy and send it back to the grid. Solar energy that is not used on-site can be sold back, creating another source of income that helps to further offset the cost of installing the solar canopy system.
5. Future-Proofing Your Business and Property
With sustainability initiatives on the rise and governments worldwide increasingly supporting green energy, investing in solar canopies and EV chargers now ensures that your business is prepared for future regulatory changes. Many regions are already starting to mandate the installation of EV charging infrastructure in new commercial and residential developments, and that trend is likely to continue as electric vehicle adoption accelerates.
By proactively installing solar canopies and EV chargers, you can get ahead of future compliance requirements and avoid the costs of retrofitting your car park later on. Moreover, your property becomes more attractive to environmentally conscious tenants and investors, potentially increasing its value in the real estate market.
Staying Competitive in a Green Economy
Regulatory incentives: Governments are providing grants, tax breaks, and rebates to businesses that invest in green infrastructure like solar and EV chargers. By taking advantage of these incentives, you can reduce your upfront costs and improve your return on investment.
Increased demand: The shift to renewable energy and electric vehicles is rapidly gaining momentum. By installing EV chargers and solar canopies, you’ll remain competitive as the demand for sustainable facilities grows.
6. Contributing to a Greener, Cleaner Environment
The environmental benefits of solar canopies and EV chargers are clear. Solar energy is a clean, renewable resource that reduces reliance on fossil fuels and helps decrease carbon emissions. By generating your own electricity through solar power, you reduce your property’s carbon footprint and contribute to the global fight against climate change.
In addition, by providing charging stations for electric vehicles, you’re encouraging more people to adopt EVs, which are a critical part of reducing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions in cities. With fewer gas-powered cars on the road, EV adoption will play a crucial role in making cities cleaner, healthier places to live.
7. Flexible, Scalable, and Customisable Solutions
One of the significant advantages of solar canopies and EV chargers is their flexibility. These systems can be scaled to meet the specific needs of any size car park, from small businesses to large commercial complexes. Solar canopy designs can also be customised to fit the architectural style of your building, ensuring they enhance rather than detract from your property’s aesthetic.
As renewable energy becomes the standard and electric vehicles become more common, car parks must evolve to meet new demands. By investing in solar canopies and EV chargers, you can transform your car park into a modern, energy-efficient, and sustainable space that benefits both your business and the environment.
This upgrade not only reduces energy costs and opens up new revenue opportunities but also positions your property as a forward-thinking leader in the green energy movement. With incentives and rising demand for EV infrastructure, now is the perfect time to modernise your car park for the future.

Electrify America sets up first MW-scale BESS at EV charging station in US
American EV fast-charging network Electrify America has recently unveiled its first application of a megawatt-level battery energy storage system (BESS) for electric vehicle charging stations, building upon its existing BESS installations at over 150 stations across the U.S.
The charging station at Baker, California has expanded from eight to twelve chargers aided by the addition of a MW-scale battery storage system. Combined with a solar canopy, the integrated systems go a long way in managing energy costs and reducing stress on the grid, by acting as a buffer to supplement power to chargers, when local utilities limit the amount of power a station can draw from the grid.
The integration of the roughly 1.5 MW / 3 MWh energy storage system with 66 kW of generation potential from the solar canopy, coupled with sophisticated control technology, is Electrify America's comprehensive solution for adding additional power to the station.
This application leverages energy storage and solar as a 'non-wires alternative' in lieu of relying on additional utility 'wired' infrastructure that may not be feasible, according to the company. Such innovative approaches become critical to expanding EV charging into more remote areas to reach more consumers where utilities may not be able to deliver the capacity needed to install or expand charging infrastructure, it adds.
"The application of the megawatt-level energy storage is the latest example of how we are continuously innovating to tackle infrastructure challenges and meet charging needs today," said Jigar Shah, Head of Energy Services at Electrify America.
"As we expand the use of such solutions to more of our charging stations and also to our medium-duty and heavy-duty electric fleet customers, we are positioned to enable continued transportation electrification even in the face of utility capacity constraints."
"To put this into perspective, the energy storage system at Baker, when fully charged, could provide enough energy for an average household for over three months on the single charge," Shah added.
This energy storage deployment builds upon Electrify America's previous announcement of having surpassed over 30 megawatts of installed energy storage now featured at over 150 locations. In California, over 50 charging stations coupled with energy storage constitute the largest operating Virtual Power Plant (VPP) of its kind shifting the use of on-peak energy to lower carbon intensity off-peak hours in the California Independent System Operator's wholesale energy market, CAISO.
Customers are already experiencing the benefits of the newly installed energy storage system and charger expansion, claims the company. Charging load at the site has already surpassed 1 megawatt of peak charging demand, with all of that megawatt-level load at various times being served by just the energy storage system and solar canopy, it adds. One of the most promising developments in this field is the integration of solar-powered car park ev charger installation Sydney, particularly in large spaces like car parks. Combining solar energy with electric vehicle charging offers a unique opportunity to reduce carbon footprints, generate renewable energy, and decrease operational costs for businesses. This article delves into the benefits, challenges, practical applications, and future potential of solar-powered EV chargers for car parks, providing a comprehensive overview of how they contribute to a more sustainable future.
The Rise of Electric Vehicle Charging Demand
The electric vehicle market has witnessed exponential growth in recent years, driven by government policies promoting clean energy, heightened awareness of climate change, and improvements in battery technology. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), the number of electric cars on the roads reached 10 million in 2020, with projections indicating that this number will continue to rise rapidly in the coming decade.
While electric vehicle technology has advanced significantly, the charging infrastructure still has room for improvement. For EVs to truly become mainstream, accessible charging stations need to be as ubiquitous as petrol stations. Solar-powered EV chargers offer a solution that not only meets this need but also contributes to the broader goal of reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
The Intersection of Solar Energy and EV Charging
Solar-powered EV chargers operate by harnessing energy from the sun using photovoltaic (PV) panels. These panels convert sunlight into electricity, which can then be used to charge electric vehicles. Installing these chargers in car parks maximises the available surface area—especially through the use of solar canopies over parking spaces, which serve the dual purpose of generating energy and providing shade for vehicles.
Solar car parks are an ideal location for EV chargers because they are often situated in areas with high traffic and can accommodate multiple charging points. By utilising solar energy, these installations offer an eco-friendly alternative to traditional grid-powered EV chargers, making them attractive to businesses and municipalities looking to reduce their carbon footprint.
The Environmental Benefits of Solar-Powered EV Chargers
1. Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Electric vehicles are often lauded for their ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional petrol-powered cars. However, the environmental benefits of EVs can be significantly diminished if the electricity used to charge them comes from non-renewable sources such as coal or natural gas. Solar-powered EV chargers help close this loop by providing a renewable energy source, ensuring that the electricity used to power vehicles is truly green.
By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, solar-powered EV chargers can contribute to lowering carbon emissions. Over time, widespread adoption of these systems in car parks could play a vital role in mitigating the effects of climate change by reducing the carbon footprint of both the transportation and energy sectors.
2. Supporting Clean Energy Goals
Many governments and corporations have set ambitious targets for reducing their carbon footprints and increasing their use of renewable energy. For example, the European Union aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, and similar goals are being pursued in other regions. Solar-powered EV chargers align with these objectives by making clean energy more accessible and providing businesses with an opportunity to contribute to sustainability efforts.
3. Reducing Strain on the Power Grid
As EV adoption increases, the demand for electricity will rise accordingly, placing additional strain on existing power grids. Solar-powered EV chargers help mitigate this problem by generating their own electricity, reducing the need for grid-supplied power. In some cases, solar car parks with EV chargers can even be designed to operate independently from the grid, contributing to energy resilience and reducing the risk of blackouts during periods of high electricity demand.
Economic Advantages for Businesses and Car Park Operators
1. Long-Term Cost Savings
While the initial investment in solar-powered EV charging infrastructure can be high, the long-term economic benefits are substantial. After the installation of solar panels and charging stations, the cost of generating electricity is virtually zero. This means that businesses and car park operators can offer EV charging services at a fraction of the cost compared to traditional grid-powered systems.
Over time, the cost savings from reduced energy expenses can offset the initial capital expenditure. Additionally, businesses can potentially generate revenue by selling excess solar power back to the grid, or by charging EV users a premium for access to solar-powered charging stations.
2. Attracting Eco-Conscious Customers
Consumers are becoming increasingly conscious of their environmental impact, and businesses that embrace sustainability initiatives can attract this growing demographic. Installing solar-powered EV chargers in car parks not only demonstrates a commitment to environmental stewardship but also enhances a business’s public image.
In retail environments, offering solar-powered EV charging can encourage customers to stay longer, as they will need time to charge their vehicles while shopping or dining. Similarly, businesses such as hotels, airports, or office complexes can use EV chargers as an added value proposition, providing a convenient and green service for guests, employees, or visitors.
3. Potential Tax Incentives and Grants
In many countries, governments offer tax incentives, rebates, or grants for businesses that invest in renewable energy projects, including solar power and EV charging infrastructure. These financial incentives can significantly reduce the upfront costs of installing solar-powered EV chargers. Furthermore, businesses may qualify for ongoing benefits, such as feed-in tariffs for any excess electricity they generate and send back to the grid.
Challenges in Implementing Solar-Powered EV Chargers
1. High Initial Capital Investment
One of the primary barriers to the widespread adoption of solar-powered EV chargers is the high upfront cost. Installing solar panels, building solar canopies, and integrating them with EV charging stations requires a significant financial investment. However, as the cost of solar technology continues to decrease and government incentives become more readily available, this barrier is slowly diminishing.
To reduce financial risk, businesses can explore financing options, such as power purchase agreements (PPAs), leasing models, or working with renewable energy companies that offer turnkey solutions for solar installations.
2. Energy Storage and Continuity
Solar-powered EV chargers rely on the sun as their primary energy source, which means their performance is subject to weather conditions. To ensure consistent availability of charging stations, particularly at night or during cloudy weather, businesses may need to invest in energy storage solutions like lithium-ion batteries. These batteries store excess energy generated during the day for use when solar energy production is low.
However, energy storage systems can add complexity and cost to the overall infrastructure. As battery technology improves and becomes more affordable, this challenge is expected to diminish, making solar-powered EV chargers more viable.
3. Grid Integration
For solar-powered EV chargers to be fully functional and reliable, they often need to be integrated with the local power grid. This integration ensures that there is always a backup power source when solar energy production is insufficient. However, grid integration can be complex, requiring careful coordination with utility companies to ensure smooth operation, particularly in terms of balancing energy supply and demand.
Practical Applications of Solar-Powered EV Chargers
1. Retail and Shopping Centers
Many shopping centres are adopting solar canopies with EV chargers as part of their green initiatives. These installations not only attract eco-conscious shoppers but also offer a convenient service that allows customers to charge their vehicles while they shop, dine, or enjoy entertainment. In regions with abundant sunlight, such as California or parts of Australia, these setups are particularly beneficial.
2. Airports and Transit Hubs
Airports and transit hubs often have vast car parks, making them ideal locations for solar-powered EV chargers. Travellers leaving their cars in long-term parking can charge their vehicles while they are away, ensuring they return to a fully charged car. Additionally, solar canopies provide shade and protection from the elements, which enhances the overall user experience.
3. Office Complexes and Commercial Buildings
Companies looking to reduce their carbon footprint and offer employees sustainable options are increasingly adopting solar-powered EV chargers for their office complexes. This not only benefits the environment but also provides employees with an added perk, encouraging them to transition to electric vehicles. It also reflects a commitment to corporate social responsibility, enhancing the company’s brand image.
The Future of Solar-Powered EV Chargers in Car Parks
As technology advances and the cost of solar energy continues to fall, solar-powered EV chargers will likely become a standard feature in car parks around the world. Several trends are expected to drive this growth:
Improvements in Solar Efficiency: Solar panel efficiency is continually improving, meaning more electricity can be generated from a smaller surface area. This will make solar-powered EV chargers more accessible for smaller car parks and urban environments.
Advances in Battery Technology: Energy storage is key to the future of solar-powered EV chargers. As battery technology becomes more efficient and affordable, the reliability of solar energy for EV charging will increase, making these systems viable in a wider range of locations.
Government Mandates and Incentives: Many governments are introducing regulations that require new developments to include EV charging stations. Solar-powered options offer an appealing solution to meet these requirements while aligning with renewable energy targets.
Solar-powered EV chargers for car parks represent an innovative solution to two of today’s most pressing challenges: the need for more widespread EV charging infrastructure and the imperative to reduce carbon emissions through renewable energy. By integrating solar energy with EV charging, businesses and municipalities can support the transition to a sustainable future while reaping financial benefits and attracting eco-conscious consumers.
Although challenges remain—particularly in terms of upfront costs and energy storage—the long-term potential of solar-powered EV chargers is immense. As technology continues to evolve, these systems will likely become an integral part of the global shift towards greener transportation and energy solutions.

Toureen powers up for Shell’s first electric only station
Toureen Group has started work on Shell’s first dedicated all EV hub in west London.
The firm, which boasts a long track record building petrol forecourts, is converting a conventional fuel service stations into an electric vehicle charging hub that will feature 10 high-powered, 175kW charge points.
These ultra-rapid charge points can deliver power up to three times faster than rapid 50kW chargers, which typically charge from 0-80% in 30 minutes.
The project, which is designed by Yorkshire architect Bowman Riley, will include a small Waitrose and Costa Coffee shop for drivers to relax while charging up their vehicles.
First of next generation charging hubs arrive
In another Shell UK first, the design features two prefabricated timber glulam canopies sourced from sustainable forests to create the structure for a solar array above.
These BI-PV solar panels allow natural light to pass through the canopy, protect customers from inclement weather and generate renewable energy.
The scheme also incorporates a fully sustainable drainage strategy through the use of permeable paving and underground attenuation tanks.
The new hub will open later this year or in early 2022.
