Staying with Beorn

[drabble under cut]

Carrock is an awesome feat of nature and technology. Tunnels illuminated by solar powered light strips branch off from the main entrance, spiral down and open into a vast grotto in the belly of the mountain that houses a pool of cold, cobalt blue water. The water is filtered through a contraption Beorn built himself – a sleek setup of pipes and tubes and canisters that disappear into the rock, as if the flowerstone formed around it and not the other way around.

Kíli isn’t sure how intricate the plumping actually is, but he knows it’s somehow connected to the irrigation unit in the main chamber, as well as in the designated domestic half of the cave system where Beorn converted a moderately sized doline into a bathing room with functioning showers and, more impressively, a circular, in-ground, tiled Roman bath. For drinking and cooking, Beorn accesses the filtered water through a small well in what Kíli considers the kitchen.

The water isn’t the only thing Beorn accomplished, however. Budding from the stem of each tunnel are dozens of rooms. Though most are too shallow to use, there are plenty that have been given a purpose, both in the domestic and the not-domestic half. Kíli’s jaw was sufficiently dropped last night when he and Fíli explored the not-domestic half with Beorn’s blessing (which amounted to a less severe set to Beorn’s eyebrows and a grunt).

The rooms in the non-domestic half are fitted with pink LEDs and filled with rows of hydroponic crops: assortments of fruits, vegetables and herbs – tomatoes, potatoes, leaf lettuce and peas; cucumber, cantaloupe, strawberries.

(           “Strawberries, Fee! It’s been ages!” Kíli squeals around a large, dribbly bite, eyes closing in bliss as the flavor explodes on his tongue.

Across from him, Bilbo mildly mentions, “You ate all my strawberries the night you pillaged my pantry.”

“Yes,” Kíli agrees, “But, dear Bilbo, these strawberries are sweet and juicy!”

“Harrumph.”

At the head of the table, Beorn pinks beneath his scruff, “I also. Have honey.” He speaks in his halting manner, quietly and to his hands that are laced in his lap.

Kíli perks up, peers around Fíli’s broad back at Beorn with an expression of childlike delight, “Honey?”

Beorn nods once and clears his throat, “I keep. Bees.” He scratches his cheek, “As well.”  

           “Here we go,” Fíli chuckles just for Kíli’s ears, face broadcasting such devotion and fondness that Kíli almost forgets about honey.

Before he asks Beorn, “Can I try some?” he grabs Fíli by the hair at his nape and yanks him in for a quick, smacking kiss, “Shut up.” and then gets down to business.)

Closer to the surface, one of the tunnels is gated, the rooms within converted into pens for a retinue of farm animals the likes of which Kíli was stunned ever existed on the planet. Straw is strewn and piled for bedding, hay feeders and troughs – drained and filled by an apparatus similar to that in the grotto, however not nearly as streamlined – are mounted between the pens. Goats, rabbits, sheep and chickens are free to roam about the space as they please.

           “We could stay.” Fíli says mildly, as if it’s a fleeting thought and not something that’s been weighing on his mind. Then he adds, teasing, “Beorn could do with some regular company.”

           “You mean friends?”

           “I mean verbal.”

Kíli snorts because it’s true. When their group stumbled out of the eagles into the dry, damning land surrounding Beorn’s mountain, Beorn and his subterranean oasis were a godsend. And then Beorn opened his mouth and what fell out of it sounded closer to the tongue of beasts than Adûnaic, consonants hawked like phlegm, though apparently, Adûnaic was what he was speaking. Beorn is definitely someone who could use a normal conversation now and then.

Unfortunately, “We can’t.” Kíli murmurs reluctantly, chin dipping to his chest.

He and Fíli are ensconced in an alcove midway up the wall of the main chamber, borrowed quilts and cushions arranged in a nest around them. Moonlight cascades through the oculus, the wheat below a sea of silver as it seems to absorb the light. Sprinklers spit and whir, the mist carried into the air by the ventilation fans and cooling the hot skin of Kíli’s face and limbs nicely.

Fíli hums in response to Kíli’s statement. Their recent hesitation toward Thorin’s leadership notwithstanding, Fíli’s as aware as Kíli of their obligation to follow him to the end.

           “Fee…?”

           “Yeah?”

Kíli bites his bottom lip, unsure how to phrase his question. He settles on, “The ORCS—”

           “I know,” Fíli leans forward to knead Kíli’s bicep, “Later, baby, okay? We’ve done enough worrying for two lifetimes.”

           “But how did they find—”

            “We’re safe here.” Fíli interrupts, adamant, and it’s not a lie.

What saved them was a bloody horseshoe up their collective arse; if it weren’t for the fact that Gandalf possesses precisely the sort of ancient magic necessary to summon the eagles – magic that neither goblins nor ORCS have, Kíli, along with everyone else, would be goblin shit by now. And Kíli’s thankful for the neverending supply of divine interventions that’ve delivered them from every tight spot they’ve landed in, but eventually, he fears, something’s got to give.

Fíli sighs, always able to hear the wheels turning in Kíli’s head as if they need oiling, “Come ‘ere.”

Abruptly, he shifts, temporarily displacing Kíli as he changes his position against the wall, spreads his legs and opens his arms. Having been leaned against Fíli’s shins, Kíli topples back into the cradle of Fíli’s body, nuzzles his face into Fíli’s throat and takes Fíli by the wrists, guiding Fíli’s to embrace him around the middle.

Fíli’s right, they haven’t had a chance to relax like this since Rivendell; to simply exist in each other’s presence. At least for the moment, they aren’t driven into the shadows by fear or frustration for a rough, reassuring fuck.

A week in Beorn’s mountain is all they’re allotted, Thorin itching to return to the stars as soon as he and Gandalf finish plotting their next move. Goblin Town wasn’t really on the itinerary and now they’re dreadfully turned around. The Journey is a lost cause, probably scrapped by the goblins for whatever goblins do with parts of a ship, and the eagles were a one-way trip, the vortexes impossible to open from this side.

Whatever Thorin and Gandalf intend to do, Kíli’s certain they’ll be ready at the end of the week. Kíli closes his eyes to listen to the soft rustle of the wheatstalks. Behind him, Fíli is a lullaby, the gentle rise and fall of Fíli’s chest, Fíli’s fingers, crawled under Kíli’s thin shirt, stroke Kíli’s stomach in a soothing caress.

Maybe, when their uncle’s quest is behind them, they can come back. Of course, that’s if the ORCS don’t kill them first.

“I’ll protect you,” He thinks he hears Fíli whisper, “Swear.”

Safe and content in his brother’s arms, Kíli drifts into a dreamless sleep.

I drew this ship for my Spaceships and Starwyrms campaign. They’ve been saving up a lot of credits to upgrade their starter ship (which I’ll be posting next), and this is what we’ve come up with!

A new ship has a certain… silhouette. In the light of the stars and air-dock halogen, they glimmer, they shine. They don’t have the scuffs that cause light to catch and dull across their surfaces, their barrier is completely active and is almost invisible, but visible just enough to change the light quality as it passes throug, bounces off the glimmering hull, and then reflects back out. It is beautiful, in the way all things new are beautiful.

This ship is not new. This ship is scratched, dented, scarred. To many, this ship is far more beautiful, because it clearly works. It has been tested. It bears the signs of traveling through a meteor storm without serious damage. There’s a curious starburst, a splayed burn that runs across the top of one of its wings, that anyone with any understanding of weapon systems would recognize as the mark left when a Plasma Cannon hits point-blank but doesn’t punch through the hull. This ship is not new. But it is badass. It has been through the ringer, and it came out blasting.

The vessel looks sort of like an axe blade with a truncated handle. It has a wingspan of over a hundred and fifty feet and is about two hundred feet long. The shortest point is the tip of the wings, which are about thirty feet tall at the ends. From the bottom of the hangar bay in the rear to the top of the command deck, the ship’s almost a hundred feet in height. On the top of each wing and nestled just behind the command deck are the three weapon systems of the ship, and dotting the top of the wings are the various communications and scanning arrays the ship utilizes.

The twin engines sit at the back of the wings, and the sweep of the ship’s rear is interrupted by three large doors: one in the middle that accesses the hangar, and the two smaller ones that open onto the cargo holds.

The ship’s interior is retro-fitted to fit a curious aesthetic. The deck-plates beneath your feet have been altered to resemble wooden floorboards, and the doors, while still opening upwards into the bulkhead like most saguarin doors, look like carved oak. The window portholes have been altered to have actual sills and to be square or rectangular, and much of the furniture is either made from actual wood, with the stuff that couldn’t be bought like that made from cleverly-disguised metal or plastic. The air is rather dry and warm, and the lighting system has a slightly-harsher glare than you might be used to.

Individual Room Descriptions below the cut

The Life Deck: Bottom Floor

1 - The Mess Hall: The mess hall is loaded with outdated but functional equipment. Along the front wall is a refrigerator, a reheater, and a coffee pot, and drawers sit under the countertop. Along the back wall is a sink, complete with food-waste incinerator and next to it an electric stove top. A tall pantry sits in the corner. On the other side is a stair-case leading up to a balcony overlooking the mess hall (see area 12). 

2 - Crew Quarters: These rooms are all furnished more or less the same. There’s a tall dresser with drawers in it, a desk, and a bed. The bed mattresses are old and dusty but perfectly usable, and the furniture has scuff marks, likely from wherever it had been stored before it was hastily thrown into the room. There’s a single window looking out into space, and the door can be locked from the inside.

3 – The Sonic Cleanser: This small room has a rack for hanging your clothes and a retractable table for doing whatever else needs doing immediately before or after bathing. The sonic cleanser, similar to but less wasteful than a standard shower, takes up the back half of the room. This room uses sound to force off dirt, dead skin, and other undesirable coatings. Special soap sits in cubbies on the walls.. The cleanser has controls for different settings, and it is currently set to its maximum force. The cleanser can be set to use water, but it is a severe drain on water supplies: the water generator can only work so fast.

4 – The Food Waste Room: This small room has a single sink that can be set to use water or sonics for cleaning, some soaps, a cupboard full of recently-purchased toiletries of all kinds, and a toilet. The room has an air of being completely unused until very, very recently.

5 – The Medbay: This room comes equipped with a rolling cart, a bunch of cupboards for the storage of medical supplies, and a large table that could have a mattress secured to it if one needed to remain in medbay for a long time. With the upgrades to the ship, the Medbay is now equipped with a toilet and sink, and a second bed platform folded up against one wall.

6 - The Central Ladder: This open space is dominated by a large, reinforced ladder that goes up to the next floor. It leads up through to Deck Two and then further up to The Bridge (see areas 15 and 19).

7 – The AI Core: This room’s door is labeled “Ship Habitation Interface Technology: Unit 33 Control Room.” Inside is a massive computer system, a single small desk, and a chair. The room is exceptionally cold. 

8 – Storage Rooms: These rooms are for storing small, non-essential but useful goods. Back-up rations, extra tools, and spare parts are just some of the eclectic things stored in these spaces.

9 - Hangar: This massive room is mostly empty space. The Hangar is meant to store multiple ships, and currently you’ve only got one shuttle. Even with the free modification making it larger, the shuttle looks miniscule in the cavernous space. Doors dot the walls, and a big one on the back wall opens up into space.

9a - Lifts: The two lifts here lead up into the Engineering level on Deck 2 (see area 18).

9b - Tiny Ship Dock: The Hangar has four locations within the hangar to dock a tiny-sized ship, or a vehicle of huge-size or smaller. If two of the docking slots are empty, you could use them to secure a small sized ship. 

9c - The Shuttle: The shuttle itself is docked here. When upgrading the ship, there was enough left over material and credits to bump up the shuttle to fit a few extra people. 

9d - The Hangar Doors: These huge doors are almost three feet thick. It takes almost thirty seconds for them to open fully, though they open just enough for a tiny ship to fit through in about six seconds. A large ramp can be extended from the back of the hangar when the doors are fully opened, to allow vehicles or passengers to come up from the ground. 

10a - The Left Engine Room: The left wing of the ship is filled with one of the massive engines that propel the ship through space. At the front of the wing is the Atmosphere Apparatus and Water Generator system. The door out of 10a does not function if the Hangar is without atmosphere, unless the engine compartment is also without atmosphere or you override the controls. There’s a steep staircase leading up from the lower level to Deck 2 (See 18a).

10b - The Right Engine Room: The right wing of the ship is filled with one of the massive engines that propel the ship through space. At the front of the wing are the Heating Controls, the Power Distribution system, and the Solar Emitter Core that allows the lights to function as sunlight. The door out of 10b does not function if the Hangar is without atmosphere, unless the engine compartment is also without atmosphere or you override the controls. There’s a steep staircase leading up from the lower level to Deck 2 (See 18b).

11 - The Cargo Holds: There are two distinct cargo holds on either side of the ship, snug between engine and hangar. They’re reinforced rooms, the doors have powerful locks that can be coded to open with a three, five, or seven digit code. There are large doors that fold down to form a ramp along the back of these rooms. 

The Work Deck: The Middle Floor

12 - The Balcony: A balcony runs the width of Deck 2, looking out over the mess hall and through the massive window that makes up the slanted roof of the mess hall. To the right of the balcony is a staircase leading down to the mess hall (area 1), and behind it is the hallway leading to the rest of Deck 2 and the Primary Airlock.

13 - The Primary Airlock: The airlock here is larger than it was before, with small lockers inside to store emergency gear. Currently the lockers are empty. From the airlock door, a thirty foot umbilical of metal can be extended outwards to connect to another ship’s airlock or another ship’s umbilical. This umbilical can curve up to 90 degrees, and can double as a ramp out of the ship. 

14 - Storage: Another storage room, much like those on deck 1, this room is for storing the miscellaneous equipment one might need on deck 2, but doesn’t want to have to run downstairs to get it.

15 - The Central Ladder: This open space has doors on its three walls and a tunnel leading to the front of the ship. A ladder leads down to Deck 3 and up to the Bridge (see areas 6 and 19 respectively). 

16 - The Science Lab: This room is full to bursting with state-of-the-art (but discounted) lab equipment. While in this room, researchers and scientists have advantage on Science skill checks that may benefit from such equipment. 

17 - The Mechanics Workshop: The room here is filled with tools, spare components, and other useful gadgets and doodads for crafting and maintaining equipment and the ship itself. The mechanics workshop is considered to be stocked with the average tools needed for a Wisdom (Mechanics) skill check and also contains a built-in repair kit. Having a mechanics workshop onboard a ship cuts the time required to fix a damaged vessel by half, and allows you to speed-repair equipment. You can choose to cut the time it takes to repair a piece of damaged equipment in half, but doing so increases the DC by 5. If you fail by 10 or more while speed-repairing equipment, it becomes useless junk. 

18 - Primary Engineering: The Primary Engineering room has tools and equipment for general ship maintenance, and provides quick access to all the integral systems of the ship. Two lifts descend into the Hangar (see 9a), and the computer on the back wall provides access to all the internal diagnostic and control systems necessary for running the ship. 

18a - The Barrier Core: In the upper part of the left wing is the powerful barrier core that projects the protective energy field around the entire ship.

18b - The Power Core: In the upper part of the right wing is ship’s generator and power systems. The generator is what generates all the power in the ship. 

The Command Deck: The Topmost Floor

19 - The Bridge: The bridge is slightly larger than before, but hasn’t changed too much. There are some extra seats to make the additional crew members a bit more comfortable when in a dog fight. The ladder leading down to area 15 and then to area 6 is still in the same place a few feet behind the captain’s chair, and can be lowered, covered with a trapdoor, and locked off. 

20 - Escape Pods: With the larger ship came larger and more escape pods. Instead of two narrow, cramped pods that required you to climb up and down to get to the seats, these pods are built more like a shuttle.

21 - Communications Suite: The communication’s suite allows one to monitor communications, scan for signals, and project a secure network for all of your devices to interact with. The large comm arrays on either side make this possible, and all of the systems can be manipulated from the control computer on the desk along the back wall.

On Mars

Things I love about Mars: the landscape.

Mars's landscape is both alien and familiar. There are other fascinating landscapes in the Solar System, of course: Venus, Pluto, Europa, Titan, etc., and each has their charms; but the thing about those landscapes is that the environment in which they're found makes them more alien. Venus has mountains and plains and, like Earth, few craters; but the crushing sulphuric pressure of the atmosphere and the fact that every few hundred million years it seems the entire planet may go molten and resurface itself makes Venus a setting for hard SF, or individualistic person-versus-environment stories: the narrative that suggests itself to me when I imagine standing (in some megaspacesuit) on the surface of Venus is not "this is a place humans could one day be," but "this is an unpeopled Hell."

(Also: apparently Venus may have had liquid water as recently as 700 MYA. Life on Earth seems to have arisen almost immediately, as soon as the conditions potentially favorable to it existed. From the formation of its oceans to 700 MYA, Venus would have been climactically stable, thanks to higher cloud cover than Earth. So it is entirely possible that for a couple of billion years, between the oceans of Venus forming and the runaway greenhouse effect destroying them several hundred MYA, Venus had life, up until the Neoproterozoic period on Earth. But if the theories regarding how energy is released into Venus's dessicated crust are correct, the fossil evidence of that life would have been annihilated in the same event that resurfaced the entire planet some time in its geolocially recent past. Perhaps fragments of it persist, floating deep in the mantle like the Farallon plate on Earth--but for now, an actual record of the biohistory of Venus is lost to us. What I'm saying is, Venus is a postapocalypse: not a hopeful Perelandra, not even in the far future, but a grievous memorial for what might have been our lush and gardenlike neighbor.)

Titan, Europa, and Pluto--although they have very different landscapes--have a common feature, which is that waste heat from technology (heck, from human bodies) would melt or boil their surfaces. Pluto is especially bad in this regard, given that its plains are 98% nitrogen ice. Humans on Pluto would be creatures of unquenchable fire, destroying everything they touched. Europa is much more familiar, especially if it has warm seas beneath the ice; but its landscape is a vast broken plain of ice, possibly with a band of peninent spires rising into the sky at the equator. It's metal as fuck. But the airless, radiation-bathed surface is, again, seems to be suited mostly to being a vehicle of existential exploration, and the subsurface ocean may just be a hopeful dream, like the jungles of Venus. Titan, that weird little orange goofball, also has a water ice surface, plus a hydrocarbon "hydrosphere" which is fascinating! It's the first time the IAU has had to come up with a naming convention for actual bodies of liquid on a planet's surface. It has lakes! Inlets! Seas! But it's tiny, has very little gravity, and if you tried to terraform it even a little bit the entire thing would melt or evaporate. There are stories I would happily tell on Titan. I can even imagine they would have some features of the stories I would tell of an Earthlike world: here is a political boundary following a river, here are pirates on the Ligeia Mare (pirates on a methane sea, frost condenses on the inside of the hull even through half a meter of insulation, we haven't seen sunlight in weeks, we haven’t seen the sun since we were born). But the strictures of the environment also demand a more hard-SF sensibility, and a hard-SF sensibility applied to the "soft" aspects of science fiction: how do the constraints of the environment shape how societies function? How is politics, war, and economics different in a place where atomic individualism isn't just maladaptive, but maybe impossible? I've thought about these questions in other contexts (deep space, settlements on airless rocks), and although Titan expands the possibilities somewhat, it doesn't expand them much. But it's definitely my third favorite body in the Solar System (after Mars and, of course, Earth).

The rest of the solar system is either gas giants (which fill me with too much dread to really apprehend them on an immediate or aesthetic level; what hubris is it to try to imagine a little human soul against the endless storms of Jupiter?), or small, airless bodies specked with craters. Some of these verge on the utterly uninteresting. Io is at least respectably garish. But the narrative context they suggest to me is the same as Titan, shorn of the unique geographical points of interest that moon offers, and while that doesn't mean they're not interesting, they don't excite me nearly as much. I am glad they exist. Some are really beautiful (speckled Ganymede! gleaming Eceladus, Europa's twin! what the fuck is wrong with you Iapetus!).

(What did we do as a species to deserve a Solar System full of so many different, beautiful worlds? How much wonder is there in the rest of the Universe if this little corner is already so full of it?)

But Mars. Ah, Mars. You know, my head says that interplanetary colonization would be a waste of resources and, lacking a useful economic purpose, ultimately a giant boondoggle. There are inhospitable environments on Earth that are, against Mars, an Eden, and we have yet to people them; if science is our aim, even the practical benefits of a manned mission to Mars stop at orbiting the planet and controlling robots remotely below. And I know all this. But there's a quiet voice in the back of my head--quiet only because like the rumble of distant thunder it is spoken at much deeper frequencies, frequencies of the ground beneath my feet and of my soul itself--that says if I don't die having crunched the grit of Mars beneath my feet or run its dust between my fingers, my life will have been empty and devoid of purpose. Not to get too metaphysical on you, but I'm pretty sure there's a part of my soul that is convinced it was meant to be born on Mars, meant to wander the Kasei Valles and the Tharsis plateau, that longs to stand on the Olympus Rupes and watch the dust storms on the Amazonia Planitia below; to sojourn in the Labyrinth of the Night, filled with fog from sublimating frost.

Mars is alien. Mars is not like Earth. Yet its appearance suggests a world we almost know: here are canyons, here are sinuous valleys, here are dusty plains. On closer inspection, these things reveal their true, unearthly nature: this is a canyon as long as Europe, yawning deeper than the mountains rise. This is a volcano, yes--it is the size of France. If you stood on its summit, very nearly above the top of Mars' atmosphere (which is taller than Earth's!), its slopes would disappear around the curve of the world before you saw their end. These valleys are not river valleys: they are ancient outburst channels, the catastrophe that scoured out the Channeled Scablands--over, and over, and over again. The atmosphere is gasping-thin, and often choked with dust. The surface is freezing. Nothing lives, not so far as we can tell. But you can imagine yourself there. I wonder why?

Part of it, of course, is the wonderfully detailed photography from Mars missions, and the fact the planet is extensively mapped--one of the best-mapped bodied in the Solar System. As part of the Inner Solar System, we can orbit it comparatively easily, and we don't have to rely on photos snapped during quick flybys. (The USGS has complete, detailed maps of Mars available for free! The USGS is a freakin’ international treasure.) I think Mars more easily than most worlds in the Solar System is a canvas onto which we can imagine projecting the psychodramas of our own history. If the "minor" objections of its ultrafreezing surface and its unbreathable, thin atmosphere can be overcome, we can almost imagine it like any other harsh desert into which human habitation has intruded (and humans, like a gas, do tend to occupy all available space). And those objections can be overcome, if we are patient and work very hard, and they can be overcome without annihilating the surface of the world. It would be possible to blanket Mars in a thick, carbon dioxide-rich atmosphere and bring its temperature up to, say, Antarctic levels (i.e., you could survive indefinitely in very warm clothing with a breathing apparatus) with several centuries or possibly a millennium of the diligent application of existing technology. We have no reason to do it right now, and it would be madness to try, but it's doable--so one day, we might.

And if we did? Well, I'd like to think that the species that did that would be, after Carl Sagan, a species very like us but slightly better in important ways, and that by then Earth would be a much nicer place to live; and Mars, therefore, by extension, would be a more rugged and difficult environment but still full of basically decent people who have solved problems like poverty and oppression and large-scale warfare. With a light brushing of a sort of Mad Max visual aesthetic, what with all the breathing masks and the exposed ductwork. Hopefully they would continue the IAU trend of giving everything really atmospheric names, so we wouldn't have the place carpeted in stupid shit like "New Canada" and "President Reagan Land", like Antarctica has been. (Seriously, the IAU needs to take over naming stuff in Antarctica, it's dire down there.)

There is another possibility of course, and in my mind that possibility is inextricably linked with the fact that Mars is small. Mars, like Earth and Venus, probably formed with a dense atmosphere. Its coldness, believe it or not, is not a feature of its distance from the Sun. That's a common misconception. The approximate habitable zone of a G-type star like the Sun extends from within the orbit of Venus to just to, or slightly beyond, a planet at Mars's distance (1.5 AU or so). Venus, for its part, was doomed by being just too warm, and, as the Sun aged and its energy output increased, the homeostasis of its environment being tipped a little bit too far, until the whole thing collapsed, the seas evaporated, and the water vapor was shorn apart by ultraviolet energy, its hydrogen scattered into space by solar wind. But Venus is big. Venus could hold on to its atmosphere regardless. Mars could not. The updated question could be how can a society be built where maximum sales are not first priority? In a society like this the need and role of designers would be different and maybe not that big.

 Of course disregarding the problems designers have in the contemporary society by saying we need a different society doesn’t help in this moment. Building a society that would be based on different values than the ones our present one has does not happen overnight. I personally believe we will continue on the path we are on and the conditions for the human species on this planet will become tougher. What could these conditions be like? Famine, war and disease? Can that lead to a collapse of the reign of large-scale enterprises? If yes, will we be forced to go back to some sort of hunter gatherer life style? The life style which we supposedly happily led for hundreds of millennia in balance with nature and ourselves until someone planted a row of wheat.

  Till that I suppose we can choose which job task we accept or if we want to set up a sauna where we serve our bathing customers and have design conferences on the side. Our planet is constantly bathed in the winds coming off the blistering sphere at the centre of our Solar System. But even though the Sun itself is so ridiculously hot, once the solar winds reach Earth, they are hotter than they should be – and we might finally know why.

We know that particles making up the plasma of the Sun’s heliosphere cool as they spread out. The problem is that they seem to take their sweet time doing so, dropping in temperature far slower than models predict.

“People have been studying the solar wind since its discovery in 1959, but there are many important properties of this plasma which are still not well understood,” says physicist Stas Boldyrev from the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

“Initially, researchers thought the solar wind has to cool down very rapidly as it expands from the Sun, but satellite measurements show that as it reaches the Earth, its temperature is 10 times larger than expected.”

The research team used laboratory equipment to study moving plasma, and now think the answer to the problem lies in a trapped sea of electrons that just can’t seem to escape the Sun’s grip.

The expansion process itself has long been assumed to be subject to adiabatic laws, a term that simply means heat energy isn’t added or removed from a system. This keeps the numbers nice and simple, but assumes there aren’t places where energy slips in or out of the flow of particles.

Unfortunately, an electron’s journey is anything but simple, shoved around at the mercy of vast magnetic fields like a roller coaster from Hell. This chaos leaves plenty of opportunity for heat to be passed back and forth.

Just to complicate matters further, thanks to its tiny mass, electrons get a good head start over heavier ions as they shoot forth from the Sun’s atmosphere, leaving a largely positive cloud of particles in their wake.

Eventually the growing attraction between the two opposing charges takes over the inertia of those flying electrons, pulling them back to the starting line where magnetic fields once again play havoc with their paths.

“Such returning electrons are reflected so that they stream away from the Sun, but again they cannot escape because of the attractive electric force of the Sun,” says Boldyrev.

“So, their destiny is to bounce back and forth, creating a large population of so-called trapped electrons.”

Boldyrev and his crew recognised a similar game of electron ping-pong playing out in their own laboratory, inside an apparatus commonly used to study plasma called a mirror machine.

Mirror machines don’t actually contain any mirrors. At least, not the familiar shiny kind. Also known as magnetic mirrors or magnetic traps, these linear fusion devices are little more than long tubes with a bottle-neck at either end.

Their reflective nature is created as streams of plasma passing through the bottle pinch in at either end, altering the surrounding magnetic fields in such a way that particles within the stream reflect back inside again.

“But some particles can escape, and when they do, they stream along expanding magnetic field lines outside the bottle,” Boldyrev says.

“Because the physicists want to keep this plasma very hot, they want to figure out how the temperature of the electrons that escape the bottle declines outside this opening.”

Or if you’re Boldyrev and his team, those leaking electrons can be studied to better understand what’s happening with our very own solar wind.

He and his colleagues suggest the population of trapped electrons that yo-yo back and forth play a major role in the way electrons distribute their heat energy, changing the typical distributions of particle velocities and temperatures in predictable ways.

“It turns out that our results agree very well with measurements of the temperature profile of the solar wind and they may explain why the electron temperature declines with the distance so slowly,” says Boldyrev.

Finding such a good match between the mirror machine’s figures and what we see in space suggests there could be other solar phenomena worth studying this way.
