after the recent benn jordan "all my gear in a tierlist" video... i kinda want to make a tierlist of all of the free softsynths ive used over the years.
from a quickly thrown together analysis script, i appear to have used 11,000 instances of 300 unique VSTs in the past 19 years...
hmm.

for the isat soundtrack, did you use pre-existing soundfonts, make your own, or didn't use soundfonts? i don't know much about music production so bear with me. also, if the first option, which ones did you use?
Fantastic question!
So there was exactly one song that used sound fonts (the SNES strings), otherwise it's entirely softsynths, multisamplers, and some recorded guitar and bass for a few songs.
If you're just getting started in making music there are a lot of free synths available from Native Instruments, and the Spitfire Audio LABS series has loads of cool free stuff as well. (You can also find bunches of free VSTs online!)
I have a lot of stuff in the studio, but I'll list out some of my current favs:
Xfer Records Serum - It's an absolutely incredible modular synth that has two channel AM/FM/RM modulation, wavetable synthesis, a bunch of really cool built-in effects, and there's so much automation you can do to create really amazing sounds.
Toontrack Superior Drummer - I have v2 + Metal Foundry, but they have a v3 now and loads of libraries available. Super customizable, absolutely the next best thing to just mic'ing up a kit yourself.
SubMission Audio Eurobass III - Honestly such a precise bass multisampler that has really detailed velocity and articulation control. Features heavily in our last album, DOOMTROID.
So to answer your question, a lot of things are either custom-designed in the studio or are built off of multisampling engines and then further modified and EQ'd to have a very particular sound.
I would just like to say that composition is FAR more important than having fancy plugins and experience with sound design and mixing, so go find yourself a bunch of free VSTs and focus on your composition first and learn the engineering part second.

Music production is hard man, it really bothers me how clean a lot of softsynths sound. My problem really is I want my stuff to sound like hardware synths from the 70s (close, doesn’t have to be perfect) but I don’t actually know how to achieve that with a VST / dont actually want to get into hardware synths . Well if you have any tips let me knhw
Thing for me is creating a sense of organic-ness and both a certain fuzziness / the illusion of Real space not simply slapping reverb and perhaps delay onto everything . And creating a harmonious sound like the equivalent of having a “color palette” for all sounds, which I’ve found difficult to do w softsynths because there’s so much potential and nothing like hardware limitations / recording quality bringing shit together. It’s like the way colors in hand drawn and scanned animation (generally) look a lot more appealing than digital stuff bc the properties of paint, camera quality pushing colors a certain direction, etc naturally brings everything together
I’m not like An Audiophile Im self taught and I enjoy working with limitations/making imperfect things and not spending forever on everything. But unfortunately using softsynths it is really easy for instruments to sound like “YouTube tutorial music” and that is the opposite of what I want

i know the trans girl thing is modular synthesizers but i really like those 90s-2000s workstation synths. i want one of those. 32 oscillators across 8 voices at least. i know those are so easy to replicate with a softsynth but i want knobs and buttons

New year, more dumped phone firmwares!
Thanks to consistent lender Rare Noggin Stuff for sending these over:
Audiovox CDM-8500 (T050BMDM02_6.189)
LG PM325 (PM325V20)
LG VX10 (T5BVZV06) LG VX4400 (TE4VZV10)
Sejin NS1000
As always, what's new can be found on the Dumbphone Repo.
The Sejin NS1000 ought to get its own post some day. That simple looking phone was a bit infamous for some use cases, but the interesting part to me is how its MIDI softsynth makes heavy use of Roland SC-55 samples!

I love softsynths that have an interface that look like they come right of 2002. Literally the biggest selling point for me

eventually one of the things i want to build & use as part of this project is a "waveform animator". i know there are modules for this from multiple established manufacturers, and i don't know how they work, but i do know they tend to be large and expensive.
my own take on the idea is basically a phaser - i.e. a bunch of all-pass filters, the more the better - but unlike a traditional phaser, sweep the filters at different rates to each other, not all in sync. also give it stereo out, and pan the filters to fill the stereo space nicely.
testing out the theory in software, using multiple instances of ReaEQ and Renoise's automation LFOs to simulate the effect, to see if this is even vaguely worth pursuing. i think it could be.
also, trying to figure out the internal architecture of the KORG Berlin softsynth from the Korg Gadget plugin pack, i accidentally created a kind of weird overtone oscillator by varying LFO speed.
two playthroughs of a simple sequence, first without the effect applied, second with. (both with stereo multitap delay also applied.)

For some reason whenever I get Shazam stats although there's usually just a handful of hits on my music they're often globally distributed across various continents and they are almost always this one track "Standard Candle," which is meant to evoke the concept of space probes like the Voyager missions. I don't know if it got used in someone's video or made it into some internet DJ's setlist or something

finally got pipewire working on my desktop (sort of)
just need to figure out the best way to split my hardware inputs/outputs and create a (permanent) virtual device I can use for voip
the goal is hardware inputs 1 and 2 as mono sources, 3+4 as a stereo source, hardware outputs 1+2 and 3+4 as stereo sinks and a virtual stereo sink I can route whatever I like to via something like qpwgraph
that way I can use a plugin host to treat my mic and send that and/or my keyboards or softsynths to the virtual device which is selectable by eg discord

Jamuary 31: They're all good horses, Brent*
Downloaded some new free stuff, did more Minilogue knob tweaking, did some overindulgent acoustic guitar delay, kept some constants like the Farfisa and some Pram-adjacent malletous instrument from a new softsynth.
End of month. Learned a ton. More to come.
*Two things. One, I always remembered the original as "they're all good dogs, Brent" and that's wrong, there's no all in the original. Two, the day that tweet went viral, I swear there was another viral thread or something about somebody's lab partner or classmate or coworker or something getting their name wrong all day like Brent/Brant/Bront, and that made the joke a thousand times funnier, but that detail seems lost to time. Anyone? Anyone else remember this?

Omicron and on and on and on and on
What was that 90s song, "Onward ever ever on, destination Eschaton," Shamen or something? Weird how I recall random shit like that but ask me what I had for dinner yesterday and I'm like duhhrrrr... but anyway so yeah Omicron got me.
Tumblr media
So that was fucking loads of fun. I've had three vaccinations so far. Time came for the 4th and I was like nah. So would I have caught this if I'd went and had that vaccination? Who knows. Anyway, I felt kinda funky Friday, then Friday night around 2am the fever hit and hit hard. Chills and cold sweat while simultaneously burning up with fever, and my knees and lower back were screaming, what the hell? Took some Target brand Advil, one of the staple take-back-to-japan things I buy when in the US, fever went down. Went to the local PCR test center, result was negative. Hmmm? But then Sunday it was roller coaster fun between normalcy and feverishness, headache, and then the sore throat from hell started. Seriously the worst sore throat I've ever had. So I went to the local outpatient clinic and did the double whammy flu/covid two-for-the-price-of-one test and welliwelliwell, positive. Doc said I probably did the first test too early or the reliability of the test I took was questionable. I don't care which. Told the doc about the sore throat and he was like "ah, omicron!" So he gave me these drops you flip in a glass and then dilute with water and gargle with, check the color of this shit out:

Funky! If I wasn't half out my head at the time I woulda busted out the UV LED flashlight I have and seen if it glowed. Shit worked wonders though. Wife went on full panic mode. Basically sequestered me off in the gear room and forbid me to come out except to use the loo, after which I have to wipe down everything with disinfectant flushable wipes, or to use the shower after everyone else has gone, then she goes in with a spray bottle of bleach and douses the entire bath/shower unit. Gotta wear a mask and plastic gloves when I leave the room. Madness. All this and my older daughter still caught it. Unavoidable really. And I offered to fuck off to a business hotel for the duration but no that costs money. Hmph. Anyway... Hell of a way to end the year.

Yay officer K's spinner from Bladerunner 2049. I've been watching that movie on repeat for the past three weeks now. And the original, both theatrical release and final cut versions, of course. I'm very intrigued by the sound design and soundtrack. They had some serious shoes to fill following Vangelis with the original, but I think they did damn good. I'd love to know what they used as far as synths/softsynths go, effects too. The piano at the start of the film sounds like it was run through an Eventide processor, the H9 and the H3000 I had way back when did stuff like that, reverb and reversed, pitched delays. Super neat but not cheap.
Well I hope you peeps out there had a better end of the year than we're having here right now. Who knows what madness awaits in 2023. More shenanigans for sure. Be well, and remember, слава україні, путін хуйло, йована русня!
