Thinkin’ Bout You
Spooky Diaz x fem!reader
Word count: 1.2k
Content warning: 18+, gets a little hot at the end, overall fluff and mush, everyone’s in love and high, reader smokes weed, reader described to have thick thighs (of course tf), pretty sure I'm missing some sorry
A/N: I took a break from my break to post this lol I was gonna leave this as a stand-alone(it can still be read as such) but honestly? it’s giving two and counting lore… so I’ll put it as a part of that series.
(not mine, got it off pinterest but awooogaa!)
Friday. What a glorious day to be off work. You slept in, hell you'd say you deserved putting up all those work hours at the hospital, and after finally crawling out of bed you rolled a small joint for the morning, and smoked it on the balcony outside your bedroom. The neighbourhood was quiet, the air was crisp and a bit cold but it's nothing one of Spooky's sweaters couldn't fix. You wrap your arms around you, the sweater is warm and it smelt like his cologne, you close your eyes and smile at just the mere thought of him. You always think about him it was crazy how one man consumed your entire being but you were so glad it was him.
You wished he was home, wished he was here to smoke with you but he got called into work earlier than usual, you didn't even get a goodbye kiss which you were missing right now, the vacancy of those lips— soft as a cloud and always on top of yours so delicately— depending on the context of course.
Without him here the day seemed to pass on slower, you checked the time what seemed like every ten minutes which also didn't help. To distract yourself you clean and cook, call your mom until she is ready to, quote, "Go and do her own thing." And hung up on you.
You lay upside down on the couch, feet crossed as they hang over the back of the couch and your head hangs off the seat cushions, Living Single reruns consumed your screen. You were well distracted until you heard a car door slam and various keys jingling together, you sat up and gripped the back of the couch for dear life.
The lock turns. The door opens. And there he is. You scream with excitement. "Hi, babyyyyy."
He chuckles, not even ten seconds inside and you already had him smiling. "Hola mi corazón."
You roll off the sofa and run over to your man, leaping and wrapping your arms around his neck and your legs around his waist. He squeezes you so tightly you swear he'd crack a few bones but in the name of love, you wouldn't care. You pepper his face with kisses before you finally land on his lips and you mould into him, his hands firmly grasping your ass that barely fits in your shorts.
He smiles in the middle of your kiss and it's an instant chain reaction. "Missed me that much?"
"You have no idea."
He gives you another small kiss before he puts you down and you fight the urge to pout and demand to be picked back up, you just want to live in his skin 24/7, but you let him catch his breath. Let him put away his things, grab a Corona while you ogle him and the way his enormous arms flexed when he twisted the cap off and the foaming bubbles sliding their way to the top... almost spilling over... but then he saves it with tongue. You lick your bottom lip and zoom in on the involuntarily sexual act, oh, and the way his Adam's apple bobbed with every sip... fuck.
"Bebita," He calls. You slowly nod, still in your love-stricken daze. "You're droolin' a little bit ma."
You rub your chin and frown at him, there is no drool. He winks at you and you turn your face to the side to avoid any more butterflies in your stomach. "You smoke already?"
You nod. "Wanna smoke again or you good?" He sat his blunt, which magically appeared from his jeans, between his lips and nodded to the back door. "Nah, I'll smoke with you."
"Good, vamos."
••••• Your head lays in his lap, his hand cupped your cheek and his thumb caressed your skin. After you two smoked, you ate and had a blissfully shared shower, now you were sprawled out on the sofa still high as fuck watching Bridget Jones's Diary, he remembered you uttered something about wanting to watch a rom-com for once. You were in the mood to watch a love story, "or something."
But you were hardly paying attention to the screen, so lost in your own world of love, you pinch his chin aiming his at an angle so he'd look down at you. Make eye contact.
"Do you think about me?" A question asked so innocently. "Course I do, baby."
You run your finger down the column of his neck, over the lump of his Adam's apple. "What do you think about?"
He pauses the movie and focuses on you. "What's this about?"
"Nothing."
"You pregnant?"
You hit him. "Spooky! No!" He was obsessed with the idea of a baby. "Just answer my question."
He sighs, nostrils flair, he hated telling his deepest feelings but, "I think about you... and me, and what our life could be like. We could get married, could have a couple of kids. I always thought about gettin' like a summer house or something. Hit it every summer with them."
You smiled. "You think about all that?"
"Fuck yeah. I see us dropping them off on their tío, he watches them... we still get to have some us time, dates, trips...whatever you want."
You swear he makes you fall in love with him all over again at least once a week. "You think I haven't pictured the wedding? I know what I'll say in my vows already."
"Liar," You teased.
"Mi amor, the day I saw you-"
You quickly cover his mouth it'd be like spoiling a movie you hadn't seen yet. He licked your palm but you were quick to wipe it on his face. "Puta." He muttered. "Bastardo." You retaliated. "So how many kids do we have?" You sit up and adjust yourself so that you are now sitting with your back against the support of the couch and drape your legs over his thighs, the cold metal of his rings hits your hot skin when his hand contacts your leg. "Five."
"Are you out of your fucking mind?" You exclaim. "I've seen childbirth live and I think we can have one and a dog." He rolls his eyes. "Fine, whatever."
He leans over to kiss your forehead. "You think about me?"
"Once in a while." You joke, his jaw drops. "Once in a while!? That's how you feel? Ay, cariño, you're breaking mi corazón."
You place your hand over his and offer him a side smile before you kiss his cheek. "The way I jumped on you when you came home isn't proof enough."
He pulls you on top of him, your legs now sitting on each side of him with his hands gleefully squeezing every pound of flesh that makes up your thunder thighs that spread every time you sit and it makes him call them pancakes sometimes. "I might need a refresher."
"Oh, getting short-term memory already, Diaz?" You hum pressing your lips to his. "Just a little bit." He answers. Your hands fumble with the bottom of his shirt, he raises his arms and you break the kiss for just a second before you're back with tongues in each others throats and you're making out as if you're life depended on it, as if he's being shipped off to war and you don't know if he's coming back. Now it was your turn to pull back in need of some air. His smile is shaky, almost like a shy expression.
"Still kinda hazy."
You rid yourself of your top, with nothing under it.
"Oh don't worry," You lean in. "I'm about to make it real clear."

A refreshing house date with SnowMan’s Watanabe Shota
The very popular Date with Snow Man project’s 5th issue is with Watanabe-kun! A morning when the two of you suddenly become closer... You can see a slightly different side of him because this is a fantasy theater.
M [Morning]
“I’m bad at waking up and my brain is not working yet so I laze around in bed for about 15 minutes - this is my daily routine”
I like opening the curtain first after waking up and then going back to bed and lazing around. When I’m awake to a certain extent, I first clean around the bed using an adhesive roller! And then I go to the kitchen after the bedroom is cleaned. I take beauty supplements like drinkable sunscreen while drinking 500ml of bottled water. And then, measuring visually, once I reach about 350ml I add aojiru to the water I have left and chug it down. After that is brushing my teeth. If I have work that day then I’ll go out after taking a shower and getting ready. If it’s a day off then I’ll change to loungewear and relax on the sofa.
B [Brunch]
“I don’t usually do this, but I’ll make an open sandwich that looks good with a smoothie!”
Breakfast and bento are prepared for us at work locations so I eat after getting my hair and makeup done but I don’t eat breakfast and lunch when I’m at home. There might have been a lot of times when I made do with just eating jellies... I’m the type to be fine with just 1 meal a day. I hurriedly gathered and bought kitchen utensils when the corona pandemic happened, but I have become unable to use them again (laughs). Keeping up appearances is important when you’re with someone, but when you’re alone anything is fine as long as your stomach is filled with something (laughs). I’m a man who isn’t good at cooking and eats a messy scrambled egg without worrying about how it looks.
R [Relax]
“It would be nice to relax in the morning, and go around beauty spots together in the afternoon!”
I end up lazing around the whole day if I don’t plan my day so I go to the gym in the afternoon and sweat a lot. After that, I go to the clinic for my beauty maintenance. I become energetic after going to 2 clinics, one after the other. And when I have more time, I go to the next clinic on foot. It’s because of that that I don’t dress up fashionably on my days off and go out in sportswear that I don’t mind getting drenched in sweat (laughs). I have been asked “Don’t you get tired?” because my schedule is packed, but I enjoy going for maintenance and it has become a habit, that not going makes me feel unsettled and unpleasant. After all my appointments, it’s become my routine to meet up with friends for dinner, go to the sauna, and then go home.
B [Beauty Time]
“I want to make it a time where we can touch each other naturally, and do things that only the two of us can do”
Recently, I’m into going to saunas. If it’s a girl who also likes saunas then it might be fun to exchange information. I like researching “room temperature” and “water temperature”. Once I knew those, I can already guess how to arrange stuff (laughs). After going to a lot of places and trying different temperatures, the best room temperature is 110 degrees Celsius, and the best cold water bath is 9 degrees Celsius! It feels good and is arranged well. There are also girls who don’t like cold water baths, but I find them cute too. If we’re going to spend time at home, then giving massages to each other might be nice!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Special Interview
The Spartan style skincare routine of the group’s number 1 beauty boy who prioritizes skincare over sleeping time!?
“I admire a relationship where we can go to saunas together, train together, and improve our knowledge about beauty.”
Like women who go to cafes and share the latest beauty news, Snow Man members also have beauty talks backstage during our free time. As you would expect, I talk a lot during these times, but beauty clinics and drinkable sunscreen supplements have already spread to the majority of the members. I even unintentionally meet the members in the places I frequent during our days off (laughs). Recently even Johnny’s Jrs have asked me about beauty news that has a good price-performance ratio!
I used to go to beauty clinics a lot, but now I feel like going once every 2 weeks is just the right frequency for me. I became addicted to going to clinics before, went too much, lost my skin’s barrier, and my skin ended up becoming rough instead. Similar to how I need to let my muscles have a break instead of training every day, going too far with skin treatments is a no-no. I’m glad that I was able to realize this.
Like the saying “Beauty is not made in a day”, I take daily facial cleansing and skincare routine seriously. This is a task I want to spend time with and do properly, even if it means having to cut down my sleeping time. I spend more time than most people cleansing after work because it causes my skin to become unhealthy if I don’t do it properly. Even if I have something in my schedule after work, I keep it (skincare) in my mind! Even if I get to a meet-up late, I won’t feel satisfied unless I do my routine without rushing (laughs). It might be because I’m known to like cleanliness so please let me say one more surprising thing, it’s honestly unthinkable for me not to take off my makeup on the days before sleeping, even on days I drink alcohol (laughs). Even if I become so drunk I want someone who would force me to wake me up and help me wash my face! I want someone to put on cleansing oil on me, and take me to the bathroom (laughs). So that doesn’t happen, I recommend going home with enough energy to take a bath!

Apartment/Kitty-sitter in Japan Wanted!
Hey guys! So I bit the bullet and decided rather than waiting what could be another year for Japan to get its vaccine program in line, I'm going to go back to the US to get my shots and visit my family, since reservations are wide open in my hometown now.
However, this brings up the issue of needing someone to hang out in my apartment and kittysit my devil child! I'm therefore looking for a cat-lover IN JAPAN (since you still can't fly in without already being a resident) who’d like a free room in the center of Tokyo to squat in my apartment and feed my kitty!
Safety Deets: I work from home and have no life, so guarantee my home is corona-free, but I'll be giving it a big thorough cleaning before you'd be arriving anyway, and you'd sleep on my pull-out sofa, which no one ever uses and is thus also germ-free XD I’ll also be taking a covid test before I fly (and if you could take a cheap one too, that would help with our mutual peace of mind; I’d be happy to cover some or all of the cost if we discussed it).
Dates: June 9-July 11 (arriving earlier and leaving later is encouraged, just in case there are travel issues)
Location: My apartment in Shinjuku, Tokyo
I'm aware this is a big ask and am not expecting much of a response, but I'm putting feelers out there anyway. If you have any questions or concerns, drop me an ask or message.
Delphi doesn’t need much, just someone around for at least some of the day so she doesn’t feel all alone and possibly tear things up. You’re free to go out and shop or whatever, as long as there’s nothing overnight and you're fully masked-up and socially distanced. I just want it to be like someone lives there full time (plus I feel better not leaving my apartment empty for a month).
My apartment has wifi, a full-size fold-out guest bed, a kitchen (with stove, oven, microwave, and toaster), a shower/bath, private toilet, and washer/dryer. It’s also right across the street from a train station that is only 1-3 stops away from Ikebukuro, Shinjuku, and Shibuya (all of which are also walkable within an hour or so if you’re up for it). There is a convenience store next door, along with an Anytime Fitness gym (which your membership allows you to visit, if you have one in your home country) and a 2-story grocery store across the street. Super convenient!
You’d essentially get a free room for the duration of your stay, and hotels in Tokyo can get expensive! If possible, I’d prefer someone I’ve met before or at least interacted with (or if someone I do know can vouch for you, that’s great). If you’ll be around Tokyo before then and want to meet up (socially distanced lol), that’s cool too!
Drop me an ask or message if you can help look after my naughty child! Signal boosting is VERY MUCH appreciated! I'll be reblogging this post periodically looking for takers.

Did We Miss It?
CHAPTER NUMBER/ONE SHOT: One shot
WHICH TOM CHARACTER: Actor Tom
PAIRING: Tom Hiddleston/Reader
GENRE: Romance, Fluff
SEQUEL TO: Scared of Shakespeare
WARNINGS: Consensual playful spanking, Sex
AUTHOR’S NOTE: I probably won’t have time to post this tomorrow, so I’m posting it now. Hope you’ll like it. Happy New Year! Let’s hope it’s a good one!
Did We Miss It?
You and Tom spent new year’s eve just the two of you, instead of with friend’s like you had done last year. It was due to the social distancing recommendations from the government that you decided to celebrate the new year together at your apartment. With Bobby of course, your beloved dog who was less scared of fireworks than yourself. They excited him. He would stand by the window and bark while wagging his tail at them.
After reading sonnets with Tom for most of the day, due to your last new year’s resolution, you decided to fix dinner together. On the menu for the night was a bouillabaisse. You weren’t a big fan of clams, so you had purposely neglected ordering them from the fish salesman.
“Where are the clams?” Tom questioned as he looked through the fridge for the ingredients to the soup.
“Damn it. I must have forgotten to order them,” you told him, struggling to hide how satisfied you were.
“Right, you don’t like clams, do you?” Tom asked and looked at you with playful suspiciousness as he shut the fridge. “You didn’t forget them, did you? You naughty girl.”
You bit your lip expectantly as he approached you like a predator approaching its prey. You let out a yelp of surprise as he lifted you up on his shoulder with surprising ease, and you laughed as he slapped your bottom playfully a couple of times before letting you back down.
“I can’t believe you just spanked me,” you said amusedly as you rubbed your not so sore bottom.
“I knew you wouldn’t mind, otherwise I wouldn’t have done it,” he told you with a wink before getting back to making the soup. You stood by and watched as he chopped the onions with ease. You enjoyed watching him cook for you, he had far more culinary skills than yourself, so you often left the cooking to him, but gladly accompanied him in the kitchen.
You poured him and yourself some wine as the soup was on the stove. It was new year’s eve after all. Both you and Tom had dressed up, like you normally would. Bobby was wearing a glitter bow tie around his neck, looking adorable. You got down to level with the dog as he came running into the kitchen, wagging his tail eagerly.
“Do you want to play?” you asked him and he barked once, as though he excitedly said ‘yes!’ You smiled and picked up a toy from the floor and had a little tug-of-war with him, before finally letting him win. You repeated the procedure a couple of times as Tom stood by and watched with a warm smile.
As you ate dinner, you found Tom looking at you in a special way, as though he was thinking about something that made him happy. You smiled at him as you caught him looking at you yet again instead of eating his food. It was as if he was in a trance.
“Ground control to major Tom,” you said humorously, causing him to wake up from his daydreaming.
“Sorry,” he apologised smilingly, took another spoonful of soup and brought it to his mouth.
“No need to apologize,” you assured him. “What were you thinking about?” you asked him curiously.
“I’ll tell you later,” Tom replied. “But right now, I want you to tell me which one was your favourite of the sonnets I read you today.”
“What?” you uttered surprisedly, knowing well that he just wanted to change the subject. What had he been thinking of?
“Which one is your favourite sonnet by Shakespeare thus far?” Tom asked you eagerly.
“Umm…” you uttered and thought hard about it. You had gone through quite a lot of sonnets during the day and reflected over their meanings. You smiled as you remembered one you particularly liked, especially when Tom read it for you. “Music to hear, why hear’st thou music sadly?”
“That’s very interesting,” Tom said. “Would you like to explain why you like it?”
“I suppose it’s because it’s about the importance of togetherness, of family, in a way,” you said. “I miss my family. I haven’t been able to see them as often as I would like because of Corona.”
“I see,” Tom replied, taking your hand in his. “I miss my family too.”
“But I don’t like the lecturing tone of the sonnet…” you added and grabbed the book of sonnets from the table, turning the pages to Sonnet 8. “It’s nothing wrong with being single. You can be happy without a partner or without having children with someone.”
“But you want a family,” Tom concluded.
“Yes,” you said and nodded your head eagerly. “I want to have children.”
“So do I,” Tom replied with a smile.
“Good,” you told him.
You finished your dinner and cleaned up together. You went out for a walk with Bobby while Tom prepared the dessert for you.
As you came back home with Bobby, Tom presented you with homemade strawberry ice cream and a mojito. Tom apologised for not making something more advanced for new years eve, but you assured him that you loved it. Which you did. Like you loved him. You felt so happy to have him in your life. You truly appreciated the way he had supported you through an at times very difficult year.
The clock was about to strike twelve at any moment now. You went to stand by the window next to Bobby, who was happily barking at the fireworks. You were so happy for him that he wasn’t scared of them. You knew plenty of pets who were and whose owners had to sit in the closet with their dogs to comfort them as the loud fireworks went off outside. Tom walked up to you and Bobby, but to your confusion, he looked at you instead of the beautiful colours outside the window. You gasped and covered your mouth with your hands as he went down on one knee and held out an open box towards you. There was a beautiful ring in it.
“[Your name and last name],” Tom said ceremoniously. “Would you do me the honour of becoming my wife?”
“Yes!” you said excitedly, without a moment’s hesitation. “Yes, I will marry you!” you laughed and tears ran down your face as he got back up on his feet. He carefully placed the ring on your finger and kissed you. You smiled into the kiss as the fireworks continued to go off outside the window.
“Let’s make a baby,” Tom told you and pulled you close to him, hugging you lovingly. Your eyes lit up as you looked at him with eagerness.
“Let’s make a baby,” you agreed and kissed him passionately. You could hear Bobby barking at the fireworks outside the window, but focused all your attention to Tom as he led you towards the sofa.
You loved the way he looked at you with his beautiful blue eyes; they were sparkling with joy and were slightly darkened with arousal. He laid down on the sofa and pulled you on top of him. You kissed deeply and he tasted of strawberries and wine. A moan escaped your lips as he grabbed your ass, pulling you closer towards him. You could feel him grow hard against you and smirked as you began to undo his belt and pants. In return, Tom helped you remove your panties and pulled your midnight blue dress up above your hips as he lustfully kissed you. You straddled him and rode his dick until he came inside of you and you orgasmed a moment later. Tired and sweaty from the strain, you collapsed on top of him.
Afterwards, you couldn’t stop smiling as you imagined what the next new year’s eve would be like. Would you have a baby to watch the fireworks with? Right, the fireworks. You rolled out of the sofa and walked up to the window, while Tom remained on the sofa, looking at you with a big smile.
“Did we miss it?” you asked with a frown as you noticed that the fireworks had begun to die down. Bobby had calmed down and jumped up to lay next to a half-naked Tom on the sofa.
“I believe we did, sorry darling,” Tom told you with a guilty smile on his face. You mirrored his smile as you walked back to him and leaned down to kiss him.
“That’s alright,” you assured him and looked at your ring. Your face hurt from how much you had been smiling. It was a great way to start the new year, it didn’t matter at all that you missed the fireworks.

Caring
JJ Olatunji (KSI) X Reader
summary - JJ looks after you whilst your sick
warnings - illness?
request - ok but like imagine you getting sick [not corona!!] and jj promises to look after you and make soup and tea and all that but he realises he cant cook
JJ knew it wasn't hard, everyone had told him that it wasn't hard, so he had no clue how he fucked up the soup, leaving it overflowing on the floor.
"Oh my God! JJ!" He heard your exclamation from the opposite side of the room as you ran over to turn off the stove and wait for the bubbling to calm down before running it over to the sink. You rubbed your forehead and coughed lightly.
"What were you doing? You absolute idiot!" Your eyes were closed as pain radiated across your face.
"I'm sorry I wanted to make you some soup to help with the pain," JJ explained. "Get back to bed, I'll clean up."
"Oh." You said in surprise. "You don't have to, JJ." You stepped towards him and rested your hands on his chest and rubbed it slightly. "I'm perfectly capable of looking after myself. I just need a nap and I'm sorted."
"You're sick." JJ chuckled slightly. "Let me take care of you. You don't have to deal with this alone. Now, go to bed and I'll bring you a cup of tea."
"Okay." You smiled softly at him before walking to his bedroom.
"What the fuck did you do to our kitchen?" You heard Simon exclaim before you shut the door behind you.
You were quick to pull a soft blanket over your body and cuddle into a pillow, desperately hoping that sleep would take over so your headache would stop. You rubbed at your head trying to ease the pain when, a few moments later, JJ walked in.
"I got you a hot water bottle, tea, and a cooling head patch thingy," JJ whispered, giving you the hot water bottle and allowing you to get comfortable. You placed the cooling patch on your head, flinching at the sudden cold touch. JJ passed you the tea and, whilst you drank the tea, went to close the curtains so you would be able to sleep without the light disturbing you.
"JJ," You placed your tea down and got your self comfy. "Can I have a cuddle?"
JJ smiled softly. "Of course." He laid beside you and wrapped his arms around you.
He kissed the top your head and waited until you fell asleep before removing his arm from underneath you. He tiptoed out of the bedroom and sat on the sofa before checking the time and seeing it was only one in the afternoon. He decided to pre-order your favourite takeout place to arrive for dinner. He looked at the pile of letters you had left on the table. He knew you had to put them in chronological order but you had gone to take a nap because you weren't feeling well.
JJ sat at the table and started to look at some of the files - he didn't read them because he knew you had to remain confidential. He checked the date and started to order them for you and put a small sticky note on the ones you had to sign. He finished through the forty (give or take) papers. He started to clean around the flat. Despite not living at the flat full time, you would often go out of your way to look after the flat since JJ and Simon were busy a lot of the time.
He did some basic picking up the things that had been thrown on the floor during shoots and the rubbish that needed taking down to the building bin. He got back to his flat and continued watching TV, keeping the volume low so you didn't wake up.
At around five, JJ heard the doorbell ring at he realised that it was dinner for the two of you. He set out the table and poured your drink out. He walked into his room and gently shook you.
You groaned and smiled at him.
"Dinner's ready." JJ grinned. "It's your favourite."
"You are amazing." You grinned lazily before making grabby hands at him. JJ let out a dramatic sigh before allowing you to jump on his back and wrap your limbs around him.
He carried you into the main living space before setting you down at the dining table. You smiled at him and took a sip from your drink as he took his seat.
The two of you started to eat when you said, "It's very clean in here, did you tidy?"
"I did actually yeah." JJ smiled. "I also sorted your files for you and put sticky notes on the ones you have to sign. I may have missed a few but I think I got a majority of them all."
You smiled at him, "JJ you didn't have to."
"I wanted to." JJ reached forward and grabbed your hand and squeezed it softly.
"Thank you." You whispered.
"No PDA in the flat!" Simon yelled from across the room.
You and JJ laughed, unlinking your hands so you could flip him off. You and JJ looked at each other again and chuckled. You were so lucky to have him in your life.

oh shit that really sucks :( My city has the highest recorded number corona patients of the entire country, but besides the "if you feel even slightly sick, stay home" no college things are being cancelled yet. As for rejeancy AU prompts... Can we have some Lup n Kravitz meeting for the first time? or taakitz + Lup hanging out? (idk if you've done those I mightve missed some)
Thank you for the kind words, dear. And ooooo I haven’t thought about writing a scene where Lup and Krav meet, that sounds like fun.
^^^ ok that was Desiree of two weeks ago, this Desiree is back with 2000 words that barely fit the prompt but u know what what else is new enjoy!!!
*~*~*~*~*
She caught sight of the house for the first time as the carriage crested a hill. Massive, done in pale stone and nestled in the crook of the valley below her like something out of a painting, down to the large stream she could see bisecting the property, to the sheep that grazed on the hills father out from the house. A rolling green park, and through the land, in a winding line, the road dipped behind copses of trees and reemerged, until she could see it running all the way up into a wide, well-kept drive before the front door.
All this she saw in a second, before the road turned, and the view was obscured.
She did not look again. Something about the scene and all the promises it implied, her connection to it, however tangential, made something heavy settle in the bottom of her stomach.
And yet, her thoughts turned to Taako. As shocking as the news of his marriage had been, as skeptical as Lup was about the true nature of it, she could not help but long to see her brother again. Three months was too long. They had thought the holiday would do her good, but in truth the time she had spent at the Burnsides’ house had only brought her ill news from seemingly every front. She needed her brother.
If nothing else, she thought, it would be good to see him again. If he was not changed by marriage as she feared.
The carriage rumbled along the road, until she could feel it slowing, until she could feel the shape of an incline. She suddenly felt something like a great illness wash over her, a settling dread, and an exhaustion so acute and complete she almost wished not to be made to move at all. She leaned her head back against the wall of the carriage, and closed her eyes, and wished, suddenly, to be gone from this place, even to be locked up in her dingy room in Tostaada’s home, if only for the fact that it would be familiar. If only because it meant that so much had not changed, that Lup had a handle on the world, a foothold in it, and that her life was not being thrown into disarray in new ways each moment.
The carriage came to a stop. Her eyes snapped open. The walls of the carriage mocked her.
There were steps approaching. Lup breathed deeply, swallowed the lump in her throat. The handle of the door was jostled, and then it was open.
She did not recognize the man who helped her out, for the moment she cast her eyes upon the gravel drive before the house she saw him.
Taako.
Hurrying from the entrance to the courtyard of that fine house toward her carriage, a grin splitting his face as he looked on her, and Lup couldn’t contain herself as her feet touched the ground, and gathering her shawl around her she ran to her brother, threw her arms around his neck, and embraced him.
He was just the same, the smell of him and the shape of his arms around her and his head at her shoulder as it always had been, and Lup took a shaky breath and held him tight and god, how she had missed him. She must’ve looked a sight, exhausted from travel, unladylike and childish in her greeting, but she could not bring herself to care. She missed her brother too much to care.
“Lulu,” he said softly, in way of greeting, and like magic, nothing seemed as terrible as it had a moment ago. Taako was with her. What could she not weather with Taako beside her?
“I missed you,” she said, muffled in his shoulder. Taako chuckled.
“Missed you too, Lu,” he said, and then, all too soon, he pulled out of the hug, stepping back, smiling like nothing in the world was wrong.
And then he turned.
And for the first time since she arrived, Lup noticed the other man.
“Lup,” Taako said, “I’d like to introduce you to my husband, Kravitz. Kravitz, my sister.”
“Miss Lup,” Kravitz said, bowing low to Lup’s curtsy. Lower, she thought briefly, than her station deserved, comparatively. “Welcome to Astral. And please allow me to express what an honor and a pleasure it is to finally make your acquaintance. Since Taako first spoke of you I have been eagerly awaiting our introduction.”
He was handsome, Lup had to own. But the more she looked at him, the more she was convinced his features were rather too fine for her taste. They seemed to have been sculpted of marble, or invented at the end of a painter’s brush. Indeed, she studied the pleasant expression painting his face and thought it looked rather like the marbles she’d seen in the fine halls of the wealthy; each minute shift seemed choreographed to show itself to the highest level of beauty, and as such, Lup could find no earnestness in him.
But Taako was positively beaming beside him, and Lup had agreed to live in the man’s home. So she turned her face to a pleasant smile as best she could.
“Thank you for your kindness,” she said, a vague comment simply for the fact that it felt right to thank him, though Lup could not imagine what for. “I too have been awaiting our introduction since I received Taako’s letter.”
He could sense her hesitance, Lup was certain, but if he did, he played it off with much cordiality.
“You must be tired, after such a long journey,” he said, “come, let us retire into the house. I will have some of my men see to your things, and call up some tea from the kitchen.”
She was tired. Long days in the carriage always tired her. They had traveled more strenuously than they could have, but by the time Lup left home, she had been desperate to see Taako.
He walked beside Kravitz, and Lup trailed behind them, just slightly, as they entered.
Each chamber they passed through, corridor and sitting room, seemed finer than the last. She could hear Taako and Kravitz prattling on about this and that but could not bring herself to listen, so amazed was she by the sheer wealth implied by each space. At moments, she seemed to forget she was not touring the house of a rich and distant lord, like so many other families on summer holidays through the country, and would not be asked to tip the housekeeper upon her departure.
Finally, they came to a halt in a sitting room at the back of the house, overlooking the gardens and grounds beyond. The view was expansive out of the tall windows, and Lup ran her hands along the low sills as she gazed out. Flowers of every shade and kind, and trimmed hedges, and fountains, and beyond that, just as she had seen on the drive in, rolling fields, the most attractive countryside one could wish to see during an afternoon tea. There was almost a possessiveness to it, she thought, and the thought soured her tongue. She suddenly felt terribly out of place in her shabby travelling clothes, her day dress she had had since she was fifteen that was now faded from its original color, her plain shawl draped at her elbows.
She turned away from the window, looking back into the room, and Taako was seated on one of the sofas surrounding a low tea table, watching her, a discerning expression on his face.
For the first time she took in his clothes. The white of his collar was brighter than ever before, clean and pressed. The fabrics were of a finer weave, there was more color in them, more detail. And the fit… they were not handed down and taken in. These clothes were made for him, and she saw him holding himself differently in them.
He did not shrink away from the expansive space, the mirrors on the walls and the polished stone floors and frescos on the ceiling. Rather, he seemed to walk in a way that filled it, and it occurred to her then, as she took in the sitting room there, the vases on pedestals along the tapestried walls, the satiny sofas and marble tables between them, that as out of place as she must look, a shivering country mouse wrapped in her worn shawl, that Taako did not. That Taako was master of this house that seemed halfway to a palace, and that he believed it.
Somewhere, while Lup had been away, Taako had ascended, seamlessly, and Lup was suddenly terrified she would never be able to join him.’
“Come sit,” he said, his contemplative eyes still fixed on her.
“Where is Kravitz,” she asked.
“He left to see to a few details of settling you in,” Taako said. “You disappeared for a while.”
Lup laughed humorlessly.
“I’m sorry.”
Taako’s expression shifted, minutely, into a frown.
“Come here, Lulu.”
It was still her brother’s voice, and Lup, in all her life, could never deny him.
She sat beside him on the sofa. Tea had come from somewhere and Taako made himself busy fixing her a cup. There was platter too, of biscuits. Fresh fruit. A truly exorbitant number of cakes and tea sandwiches for three (now two) people.
“Who’s going to eat them?” Lup asked. Taako blinked in confusion for a moment before the understanding downed in his eyes.
“Oh,” he said, and then shrugged. “Servants, probably, to be honest. I’ve tried requesting fewer, but they don’t seem to have taken to heart yet that we don’t need several dozen sandwiches for one afternoon tea. You should try them, though, they’re… quite good.” He handed her the tea. She took a sip.
“You don’t like him,” Taako said, and Lup froze. He did not have to say who he meant.
“Taako,” she started, and what could she say? “He seems… very nice.”
“A glowing report from you,” Taako said dryly, stirring his own cup. He did not meet her eyes.
“Taako,” but there was no more to say. She could not defend herself. In her heart, a thousand worries bubbled up. The marriage had come so quickly, and with no warning, and upon meeting Kravitz he did not strike her with any strong impression other than that… he was rich. And after their aunt died and left them with Tostaada, she and Taako had been in dire straights, to be sure, but she had not thought it was so dire that Taako would -
“It’s just -” she blurted, and then held her tongue. But Taako waited, turned his gaze to her, raised his eyebrows over the brim of his teacup as though to urge her on.
“Do you love him, Taako?” It burst from her, she being unable to hold the question that had plagued her for two months any longer. She wished to take his hand, but he was holding a teacup. Hers, reaching out for him, landed indistinctly on his knee.
Taako paused a long moment, not looking at her. He set his tea down on the table, the soft clink of porcelain on stone seeming to fill the entire room. She could see the muscles of his jaw working, clenching and unclenching the way they did when there was something he wanted to say but was not sure he could. And she knew, in that moment, that she had been right the whole time, that the threat of poverty had finally overtaken Taako’s heart, and he had been too afraid to continue on without it resolved. And resolved it was. But at what cost?
In that silence before Taako’s answer she imagined a thousand things. Imagined Taako’s cold, distant life with a man he could not love, and wondered, sickly, if all of the comfort, all of the brocades and fine china and tea sandwiches in the world would fill the ache in his heart of a life without love.
And then Taako took a deep breath that seemed to shatter the room.
And he looked at her, and his eyes were deeper than the ocean as viewed from Magnus’s door, and were so earnest she felt fixed in place by them. She could see tears welling in the corners. She couldn’t remember the last time she saw Taako cry.
“Lulu,” he said, and he grabbed her hand, squeezed it tight. He was smiling. “I think I do.”

Of Rocks and Robots Ch. 2 - The First Night
Varian landed ungracefully on the ground. He looked up to see if any of the knights had seen him fly off the slide, but none were around. He picked himself up and inspected his surroundings. He stood in an alleyway between two tall towers; the crystal slide he had just slid down attached to the side of one of them.
A few moments passed and he nervously began to shift his weight from foot to foot as he waited for someone to appear. Just when he had started to think that the people he had met had abandoned him, he saw the green knight, Wasabi, exit out the front of the building. He turned to find Varian and upon seeing him he smiled and waved. Varian returned the smile and jogged over to where he stood.
“Have fun?” The tall man queried. Varian nodded a reply, out of breath from both the ride down and from running. The man just smiled back at him and then motioned for Varian to follow. He led them to another alley a short ways away. In it was parked a strange metal vehicle on wheels. It looked similar to the ones the men in blue had rode in, only smaller, with no flashing lights on top, and was painted green.
“Wow!” Varian exclaimed as he ran to inspect the new machine. “What is it?”
“Uh…A car.” Wasabi replied as if it was the most obvious answer in the world, but Varian was too excited to notice that he was coming across as weird to the stranger.
“How does it work?” He eagerly asked.
“Umm... Well it runs on a combustion engine. Do..do you not have cars in your world?”
“No.” Varian replied glibly. “Everyone just either walks or rides a horse.”
“Oh, wow, uh..no one’s ridden a horse around here for over a hundred years.” He said with an awkward laugh. He then cleared his throat and asked Varian if he wanted to go for a ride in the fantastic invention.
“Would I ever!?” Varian gleefully exclaimed and with that grabbed the handle of the door, flung it open, and hopped inside. Varian looked in wonder at the dashboard, at all the knobs and dials, and tried to mentally guess what each may do. Wasabi entered from the other side and sat in front of a wheel that Varian guessed was for steering.
“Now the first thing one must always remember to do when riding in a car,” Wasabi instructed with a serious air, "is to strap in one’s seat belt.” With that he grabbed the aforementioned “seat belt” and pulled it over his shoulder buckling it into the metal buckle on the opposite side. Varian dutifully mimicked his action and once completed looked up at the larger man and shyly smiled; looking for acknowledgment that he did it right. The knight smiled back at him approvingly. He then took a small key from his side pocket, placed it in a keyhole next to the wheel, and gave the key a turn. The car roared to life and Varian couldn’t help but giggle in excitement.
----------------------
Ruddiger hid himself inside an alleyway, tucked up under the open lid of a large box. He peered out at the strange people dressed in blue, wondering what they might do, praying they would just leave already. He didn’t know where he was, but it was loud and unnaturally bright. Worse, his boy, who he had arrived with, had been carried away by a strange creature and five other oddly dressed people. He had to get back to him. But how? Where would he even begin to look?
Finally the people in blue piled back into their noisy carts and rode away. He waited for several minutes to see if they would return. When they did not, Ruddiger ventured to poke his head out of the alley and look around. He was rewarded with the sight of Varian walking around the corner into another alleyway. He excitedly took off after his owner. Upon reaching the other alley though, he was greeted with the sight of Varian entering a green cart with another human also dressed in green. Ruddiger recognized the human as one of the ones who had dragged his boy away to start with.
The cart began to move, backing out of the alley, and Ruddiger had to scramble out of the way. It then stopped and turned to face the direction of the street. As it began to speed away, Ruddiger ran after it, made a flying leap, and landed on the back bumper. He then held on as it sped down the road.
----------------------
Varian pressed his face to the window of the car. His nose smooshed up against the glass as he tried to get a better look at the tall buildings as they passed by. Wasabi was off to the side steering while also explaining the various rules and regulations about driving the vehicle. Varian only half way listened. Not because he didn’t care, he did. He found the machine fascinating and wanted to know more, but he also found everything else fascinating too.
Everywhere he looked there was something new to gain his attention. It was honestly a little overwhelming because he couldn’t focus on just one thing. As soon as something grabbed his interest it would slide out of view and another thing would come along and catch his eye. He just sat in silent awe, his head swerving every which way, unable to verbally formulate the millions of questions tumbling through his mind.
Eventually as they went along the buildings got shorter and shorter and further and further apart. After a time Wasabi turned the car into a smaller side street next to a large building with multiple windows and off in the distance Varian could see other shorter but nevertheless still quite impressive buildings with well manicured lawns. Wasabi then pulled the car to a stop alongside several other similar vehicles.
“Well here we are! The San Fransokyo Institute of Technology, also known as SFIT.” Wasabi proudly proclaimed.
“This is a university?” Varian asked in wonderment. Schools of higher learning were rare and expensive places. One had to go outside of Corona to the larger cities and kingdoms to find them and only the richest of nobles and royals got admitted. Varian always knew that attending such bastions of knowledge was a mere dream for a poor farm boy, though he had always hoped to at least see one someday. And here he was about to spend the night at one! “Can I look around?”
“Well maybe tomorrow, or the day after, but the school is closed for spring break so not much is going on right now. But in the meantime it’s getting late, so let’s get cleaned up and get some sleep.” With that he stepped out of the car and Varian followed after him.
They walked into the closest building; the tall one with all the windows. Once inside they then walked up a couple of flights of stairs which lead to a long hallway with doors on either side. Wasabi stopped at the third door on the right which had the number 303 painted on the top. He pulled out another key and unlocked the door and walked inside. Once inside he took off his helmet and flipped a switch next to the door. The room flooded with light revealing a type of living quarters.
“Welcome to my humble abode. Make yourself at ho–” Wasabi stopped mid sentence as the light above him began to flicker off and on. He turned to see Varian switching the light switch up and down with a look of intense interest on his face.
“Fascinating.” Varian said with awe. “The switch appears to be connected to the light above. What connects them and what powers the light?”
“Uhh…..wires and electricity?” Wasabi said completely caught off guard by this new line of questioning.
“Electricity? Like from lightning? How do you harvest lightning?”
“From a power plant” Wasabi said slowly trying to find the words to explain what was, to him, a part of everyday life.
“A plant that generates electricity!? Oh, what kind of plant is it? Like a flower? Or a vine? Or-”
“No, not a living plant.” Wasabi interrupted. “A power plant, like a factory. They use turbines to generate electricity and use copper wires to carry the current to various places. Let me guess, you don’t use electricity in your world either?”
Varian shook his head, suddenly aware that he was completely out of place in this new world and beginning to feel more than a little awkward. He tried to curb his questions and act nonchalant in order to avoid any more embarrassment; placing his hands behind his back and taking a look around at his new surroundings.
Wasabi’s dormitory was comprised of two rooms. The first was simultaneously a sleeping quarters and living space. There was a bed and a dresser in one corner of the room and across from it a small table with kitchen supplies. Next to that was a work desk and then next to it, across from the door, a small yellow sofa, at the foot of which there laid a small green rug. There was a window above the small kitchen area with curtains to match. There wasn’t much room, but it was kept clean and neat and was obviously enough for a single occupant or two. The second room was even smaller and covered in white tiles. Upon inspection Varian deduced it was a type of washroom, but the various bits of furniture within were unlike any he had seen before and his curiosity was piqued once more.
“You can take a shower first if you want.” Wasabi offered.
The shower that he pointed to was a small tiled basin with a drain and a curtain around it, on the side of the wall was a knob and a metal bit of pipe that hung down. Varian turned the knob experimentally and water began to pour from the pipe into the basin.
“Woah” Varian breathlessly laughed as he began to turn the knob in different directions to see what different results it would produce. He was met with different increases in the water pressure and flow from the pipe.
“You gotta turn the faucet all the way to the right for the hot water” Wasabi instructed as Varian fiddled with the shower. Varian promptly followed this advice and the water coming from the pipe started to admit steam indicating that the water was indeed getting hot.
“You know, I once tried to build a hot water system like this for my village a couple of years ago using steam” Varian began to brag but his pomposity quickly deflated when he had to recount how he was unsuccessful in this attempt, “Sadly it didn’t really work out.”
“You don’t have running water, either?” Wasabi asked with a look of concern on his face.
“Well, we had a well and the river,” Varian offhandedly explained, trying to shrug off the larger man’s worry. That’s when the strange seat on the other end of the small room caught his eye.
“Oh, what’s this?” He exclaimed as he pushed down a small lever on its side. He heard a flushing noise and he looked down to see water draining out of the seat portion of the odd chair. He looked back up and immediately knew he had done something wrong when he noted the look of horror on Wasabi’s face.
----------------------
Wasabi scurried about the dorm, dusting and cleaning where he went. The stranger was in the other room taking a shower and Wasabi took this time to organize both his home and his thoughts. Cleaning and organizing was something he enjoyed. It helped him to unclutter his mind and de-stress from the day’s events, and boy what a day this one had turned out to be!
The arrival of the stranger from another world was already weird enough, but the constant new revelations about said world were starting to unnerve Wasabi. Teaching a grown teenage boy what a toilet was not something he had ever considered he would have to do in his life. What kind of hellish nightmare world didn’t have indoor plumbing anyways? He shuddered at the thought.
Soon Wasabi ran out of things to clean. He kept his room so meticulous at all times that there really wasn’t much left to do. He sighed and then decided to turn his attention to the laundry. He changed out of his armor, which was covered in dust and dirt from the explosion, and into some pajamas. He couldn’t just throw said armor into a washing machine, but he could polish it off while the other clothes were washing, so he placed it into the laundry basket anyways. He then picked up the stranger’s clothes that he had left outside of the bathroom door. They were also covered in grime and dirt from the explosion from earlier and so Wasabi had agreed to wash them as well. However he remembered that without running water or electricity there undoubtedly weren’t any washing machines in the stranger’s world either. There was no telling how long he had worn these clothes without cleaning them. Wasabi grimaced and gingerly held the articles of clothing between his forefinger and thumb as he placed them into the basket with the rest of the laundry.
Before he could head down to the dormitory’s laundry room though he needed to find something else for the boy to wear for the night. So Wasabi went scrounging around his chest of drawers to see if he could find anything that might fit. He eventually pulled out a pair of old jogging shorts. He hoped that the drawstring on them could be tied and tightened enough so they wouldn’t slip off the other boy’s small waist. In addition to this he pulled out one of his old hand knitted sweaters. He had made it back in high school and it was getting to be a little too tight for him but it still would be baggy on the kid. Wasabi shrugged. Oh well, it was just to sleep in anyways, the boy’s real clothes would be clean and dry by morning.
Wasabi looked up from what he was doing when he began to hear singing coming from the other room. The kid was taking a while, but Wasabi supposed if it was his first ever shower he would take forever too. That’s when his stomach began to growl. It’d been hours since he’d last eaten and there’s no telling how long it’d been since the stranger had eaten as well. He looked at the clock on his nightstand. Two in the morning; not much left still open except the local pizzeria. Being right next to a college they were open twenty four seven.
“Hey! I’m going to order us a pizza, do you like black olives?” Wasabi yelled through the door.
“Love them!” the boy yelled from the other side.
With that Wasabi folded the clean clothes and laid them on the sofa and then went to call in the order. He had just finished placing the call, with the man on the other end promising to deliver in five to ten minutes, when he turned around and was greeted by the sight of a raccoon clawing at his window.
Wasabi screamed. The wild creature had begun to lift up the bottom panel of the window in order to get in and was squirming his way through. Wasabi rushed over to the window to stop it, tossing his phone on his bed in passing.
“Oh no you don’t!” Wasabi barked while trying to shove the raccoon back outside. That’s when the stranger came out of the bathroom.
He stood there dripping for a few moments, towel wrapped around his waist, trying to process what he was seeing. Suddenly recognition swept across his face and his mouth split into a big grin.
“Ruddiger!” he yelled with joy and then ran up to the window and scooped the raccoon into his arms, bringing him inside and nuzzling his face in the creature’s fur as if it was a pet cat or dog.
Wasabi looked on in silent horror and confusion. Out of all the odd things the kid had done or said today this was the most baffling and disturbing to Wasabi.
“Nope! Unh-uh! No way! We don’t allow wild animals inside dormitories around here!”
“Rudggier’s not wild. He’s tame.” The boy replied with a laugh, still cooing over the masked critter.
“Rudggier? It has a name?” Wasabi asked in disbelief. “Well does it also have it’s shots?”
“Shots?” The boy echoed in confusion.
“Yes. Shots. As in Vaccines.” The boy just stared back at him blankly so Wasabi continued, “You know medicine that’s supposed to prevent you from getting sick?”
“You have medicine that stops people from ever getting sick?” Varian responded in amazement.
This sent Wasabi into a fresh new wave of panic. The kid had no concept of modern technology, hygiene, nor medicine, and here he was snuggling with a diseased ridden vermin claiming it as his pet. Wasabi bit his fist and took deep breaths to try and keep himself from hyperventilating. Once he thought he was calm enough to speak again he continued with his argument.
“Look, pets or any other kind of animal isn’t allowed on school campus so he’s just going to have to go back outside.”
“No.” The younger boy backed away and clutched the raccoon tightly to his chest in a defensive manner. “If Ruddgier goes then I go too.”
“Go where!? We’ve already been through this. You can’t sleep outside.” Wasabi was quickly losing what little patience he had left. He couldn’t understand why the kid was being so obstinate.
Varian was also losing his patience. “I do it all the time. It’s no big deal.” He said with an eye roll.
“Why!? Does everyone in your world live like cavemen!?” The boy looked really offended at that comment but Wasabi didn’t give him a chance to retort back. “Look this isn’t up for discussion. Raccoons aren’t pets and they don’t belong inside. End of story. I don’t even know why you’d ever want that thing around anyways?”
“Because he’s all that I have left!” The boy yelled back ferociously.
Wasabi was taken aback. Not just by the intensity of the boy’s voice but also by the complete change in demeanor. All of the previous wonderment in his eyes was replaced with anger and pain and upon his face was a scowl fiercer than any wild animal. He looked feral and cornered, like he could attack you and/or bolt from the room at a moment’s notice. Then the actual words the boy had said began to sink in; “all that I have left.”
“Oh man.” Wasabi whispered to himself and hung his head in shame. This poor kid was lost. Nothing in this world was familiar to him and his family was a world away, and what had Wasabi done to actually help? Tell him to send away his pet; the one thing that reminded him of home. He sighed and swept a hand across his face, as if the action would wipe away his anxiety and embarrassment. “Look, I’m sorry.”
“What?” The boy responded in disbelief. Whatever he had been expecting the older guy to say, an apology wasn’t it.
Wasabi sighed again and calmly repeated his apology. “I’m sorry. All this time I was thinking about myself and what I was comfortable with, and I didn’t take into consideration your feelings. That was selfish of me and I apologize.”
The teen just continued to look at him with a mixture of confusion and distrust, so Wasabi pressed forward. “Look, perhaps we can come to a compromise.” He slowly suggested, trying to mentally figure out what that compromise might be. However, before he could continue on, there was a knock at the door.
----------------------
Varian watched as Wasabi talked with the man at the door, only paying half attention to their conversation. His brain was still reeling from the fight that had just occurred. Varian wasn’t used to hearing apologies, not sincere ones anyways. There wasn’t a single person in his life who hadn’t let him down before. They would feign interest in his well being only to abandon him later or go back on their word. Therefore, Varian didn’t know what to make of Wasabi. He sounded honest but so had they. Yet, none of them had taken him into their home and offered him help when he needed it either.
Wasabi finished giving the man at the door some green slips of paper, took from him a flat brown box, and wished the man goodnight. The box must have contained some sort of food as Varian could smell roasted garlic and other spices emitting from it.
“Now as I was saying,” Wasabi turned to him, “maybe we can work out a compromise. We really can’t just let a raccoon roam free around the apartment complex, but if you don’t want him to sleep outside, then I can make him up a bed in the bathroom and he has to stay there for the night.”
Varian mulled over the proposal. It seemed fair. Ruddiger would be safe and he wouldn’t need much for the night; just a blanket and some food. Varian began to nod his agreement but Wasabi was already continuing on before he could say anything.
“He can stay, that is, only on three conditions. One, I call the vet in the morning and schedule him a check up and they’ll undoubtedly give him the shots he needs.”
“What’s a vet?”
”An animal doctor. Two, also in the morning we swing by the pet store and buy him a leash, a carrier, and a cage for him to sleep in.”
“A cage!?” Varian was less agreeable to that last condition.
“Yes, a cage. He can’t be wandering around the halls and he can’t be outside unsupervised. You saw all those cars on the road on the way over here, right?” Varian nodded. “Well there’s even more of them going about during the day and you don’t want him to get run over do you, or get lost in the big city because he snuck out during the night?”
Varian looked forlornly down at his pet as he held him. No he didn’t want either of those things to happen, and this was a whole new world, no telling what other dangers existed for a raccoon. But he just knew Ruddiger would hate being stuck in a cage. He sure did. Varian nuzzled his face into the raccoon’s fur, unsure what to do.
“Don’t worry.” Wasabi tried to encourage him ”You can let him out whenever you’re here and can take him outside as long as he has the leash on.”
“Ok.” Varian said softly, his face still buried in his pet as he hugged him.
“Aright, last condition, we can not let any of the Residential Advisers know that we’re keeping a wild animal in the dorms. I can’t afford being kicked out of student housing. So we have to keep him hidden from the higher ups.” Wasabi pointed right at Ruddiger as he said this to emphasize his point. “Got it?”
Varian was surprised. He didn’t realize that Ruddiger could be such a risk to Wasabi. He also wasn’t expecting anyone to go to such trouble just for him and the realization that this man was willing to risk his home just to keep Varian happy was humbling to say the least.
“Got it” he repeated back, vowing to himself not to let that happen.
“Great! Now that that’s settled, here’s the pizza if you’re hungry.’ Wasabi sat the box down on the table. “I’ve also laid out some clean clothes for you to sleep in, they’re on the couch, and I’m going to go downstairs and throw the laundry in the washing machine.” With that he picked up a basket full of clothes and walked towards the door.
“You also have a machine that washes clothes!? Can I see it?” Varian asked, his curiosity piqued once again.
“Sure, we can go down together when it’s time to put them in the dryer. That gives you some time to eat and change clothes.” Wasabi struggled a bit to open the door as his hands were full, but no sooner did he get it open, was he then stopped by Varian’s voice.
“Hey, Wasabi.”
“Hmm?” Wasabi turned around and stood in the doorway to look at him.
Varian was shuffling his feet and looking downwards trying to form the right words.
“Thanks. For everything, for helping me, I mean. Not a whole lot of people would go out their way to do that and you didn’t have to, so, ..thank you.” Varian looked up at those last two words, emphasizing how much he truly appreciated all that was being done for him.
“Naw, don’t mention it. After all, what are friends for?”
Varian didn’t know the answer to that question. He had never had friends before; not real ones. Not ones that would go through any pains to help you out because helping was just the right thing to do. But apparently this was a rhetorical question, as Wasabi only stood around long enough to give Varian a smile and then turned to leave, closing the door behind him.
Varian stood still for a few moments, looking at the space where the older teen had stood, mulling over what had just happened. But soon enough Ruddiger was getting tired of being held and was struggling to escape his arms, distracting him from his thoughts. He put the raccoon down and then went to change into the clothes Wasabi had given him.
They were far too big on him. The short britches had a drawstring to tighten them with but even when pulled as tight as they would go they hung loose upon his hips. The jersey was no better. It hung down to his knees and the sleeves went several inches past his wrists, completely covering his hands. But he dealt with ill fitting clothes for most of his life. Usually just re-purposing his father’s old hand-me-downs, re-patching or hemming as needed. So Varian just rolled up the sleeves, deciding to make do; at least these clothes were well maintained and didn’t need any repairing.
He then turned his attention to the food. He had heard of pizza before, it was apparently popular in Italy according to the sailors and traveling merchants he sometimes talked to. A must have if one were to visit say Naples, not that Varian ever figured he would. He had never traveled further than Vardaros, a city outside of Corona’s walls that his dad would sometimes go to market to.
The pizza consisted of flat bread covered in olives, onions, and entirely too much cheese that overflowed in stringy pieces when he picked up one of the pre-cut slices. He took an experimental bite. Under the cheese there was a type of red sauce spiced with garlic and other herbs. It wasn’t bad, though not what he had been expecting. He curled up on the sofa, sitting cross legged, and eating the rest of the slice, pulling off pieces of the runny cheese that was falling off to give to Ruddigger. Who grabbed them from his hands and gulped them down eagerly.
After finishing a slice Varian decided he had had enough. Ruddiger apparently had not and ran up to the table to grab his own slice from the box. Varian watched the gluttonous raccoon with amusement but then soon found himself yawning. He stretched, feeling sleep catching up to him after the day’s events. This, though, seemed to be a signal to Ruddgier, who immediately dropped the piece of pizza he was eating and sprinted back to the window.
“Ruddigger?” Varian called out in both confusion and alarm. Worried that his pet would leave so soon after they had just been reunited, he got up from the couch and followed.
However Ruddiger only went as far as the window sill. He picked up something in his mouth and then turned back around and trotted back to where Varian was standing, proudly holding his head up expecting Varian to take the item from him.
“Whatcha got there buddy?” Varian asked as Ruddiger deposited a yellow bit of rock into his hand. Like a puppy dog who just fetched a stick and was entirely too proud of itself for completing such a simple task, he sat back and eagerly waited for his master’s approval.
Varian’s heart skipped a beat. It was a piece of amber, the amber. It was roughly four inches in length that tapered to a sharp point. It’s sides were uneven and craggy but it was entirely flat and smooth on one end, as if it had been cut. But the amber couldn’t be cut, unless….
Varian’s pulse began to race as his mind ran through the possibilities. It must have come through the portal with him, which meant that the portal itself must have cut the piece off when it closed. Which made sense as it wasn’t a physical force that ruptured the surface of the unbreakable rock but an absence of space itself. What this meant for his father and how he could go about implementing this knowledge was invaluable and the first real break though he had since the accident. Now if only he could get back to his lab…
Varian stopped his run away thoughts and looked around at the unfamiliar apartment. But he wasn’t at his lab, or Corona, he was here. And he didn’t even know where here actually was, or how to get back, or even if he could get back.
Varian slumped back onto the sofa, tears filling his eyes. The full enormity of what had happened to him finally sinking in without anything else to distract himself with. He would never admit it to anyone, but he was scared. Scared that he may have lost his dad for good. He couldn’t stop the tears now. Varian couldn’t tell you how many times he had cried since that fateful snowstorm but for a while he had believed he had no more tears left to shed. Apparently he was wrong, just like how he was wrong about so many other things in his life.
He wiped his eyes and laid upon the couch, turning his head away from the door and curling up in a fetal position. He didn’t want Wasabi coming through the door and seeing him awake and distressed. He no longer cared about washing machines and pizza and whatever other wonders this world may hold, he just wanted to sleep and to dream about happier times in his life. Lucky for him the sofa was cushiony and soft, far more comfortable then what he had been sleeping on for the past year or so, and it therefore lulled him to sleep soon enough and he was blessed with the sweet relief of unconsciousness.

A/N: final chapter, but there's a EPILOGUE left, welcome to the peak of angst of these series. Also, I use Roman numbers for my chapters, but my bestfriend commented the other day that most people don't find it easy to understand??? Let me know if you can understand them easily plz <3.
Heal me masterlist
Rogue-barnes-16 masterlist
Soon I was in an American bus, making my way to Brooklyn, more specifically to the Barnes' house.
All I remembered from the previous days was crying for Bucky, because he was not supposed to die, because I loved him and because he loved me.
I should have gone to the mission with them, I should have argued more, he would eventually have given in ;I should have tell him I loved him, even if I had told him already, even if he knew it; I shouldn't have gotten mad at him for protecting me, at least not in that moment.
It wasn't fair, because now I had to live with the guilt, and not just the one that came with Bucky’s death, but also the one that hit me after Steve's.
I never would get to apologize with any of them, I would never be able to make amends with those two Brooklyn boys.
I pushed back all those thoughts for a moment, and after taking a deep breath, I knocked the Barnes' door and waited for them to open it.
"Y/n? Darlin' so good to see you again!" Mrs. Barnes greeted, slowly opening the door. "what're ya doin' here, hun?" I didn't open my mouth, I couldn't part my lips. "you came to visit ya ma?" her voice had dropped subtly, almost as if she knew.
She knew, but was waiting for me to deny it.
I didn't shake my head no, I didn't speak the dreadful news, I only took one of my hands to my bag and grabbed Bucky’s military hat.
As I handed it to Mrs. Barnes, I saw the color leaving her face, but she didn't cry. "Where's Steve? Why isn't he with ya, hun?" her trembling voice asked in a puddle of nerves.
This time I did shake my head no, and tears were spilled. I didn't notice Rebecca coming to us until she was sobbing too.
"I'm sorry..." I apologized in a broken whisper. "It's my fault" I didn't even realize what I was saying, not even when they turned to look at me. "It's my fault he's dead... I'm- I'm sorry. I'm really sorry. It's my fault" confusion showed up on their faces while they looked at me. I finally broke down to tears, covering my mouth with one hand, trying desperately to hold back the sobs because I didn't deserve to cry with them. "I'm sorry" I repeated, but this time came out too broken to be understood, too muffled to be heard. I shut my eyes, not wanting to see the two women. "I'm so sorry- it's my f-fault I-" the sobs turned worse and my head started to spin. I had to hold onto the door frame because now with my eyes closed, the only thing I could see was Bucky's face. "I should've been there... Oh God I should have been there I'm sorry... I'm so sorry- Oh my God-"
I felt someone's trembling arms hugging me. "it ain't your fault, Y/n." it was Rebecca's voice. "it ain't on you."
A Month Later
"Y/n, love!" Mary, my bestfriend, called my name from the entrance of our house. "There's a man here who wanna see ya!"
After what happened to Bucky and Steve, after all the guilt and the sorrow, I didn't think twice before leaving the Howling Commandos. Some of the boys had tried to talk me out of it, but they couldn't have changed my mind about a decision I had made more than two years ago.
To my surprise, the boy standing in front of Mary, was non other than the one who supported my decision. "Gabe?"
"Hey" he gave me a small smile while I requested Mary to leave us. "How ya doin'?"
"I'm just trynna live" I quietly replied, stepping aside and motioning him to get in. "How come you're here?"
He hesitantly stepped in the living room, looking around. "I... We've been cleaning up" I nodded, closing the door before sitting in the sofa. "and Uh..."
"I took my things when I left." I informed him, figuring he might have mistaken and item in Bucky’s things for something mine.
"yeah, no, but-" he cleared his throat and, after taking his hand to his bag, he handed me an envelope. "this got ya name."
I stared at the envelope for a while. It had my name written over it, not just once, but four times. Three of them were crossed out, like he had been going to give it to me, and then he had regretted it.
"Morita had it between his things... Apparently Bucky gave it to him the day-"
"I don't want it" I muttered, unaware of the tears streaming down my cheeks until one fell over the same envelope.
"I'll leave it here, though." Gabe stated, getting up "in case you change your mind."
~~~~~~~~~~~~
I didn't read the letter.
But it sat there, in my tiny wooden nightstand, and I was greeted with that view every morning, when I woke up to go to work in Kew Gardens General Hospital; every evening, when I came back and went to sleep; every singled time I entered.
And it wasn't like I couldn't remove it from the nightstand and put it inside that brass box of photographs an small things I had from War.
I could grab the damn letter and put it in that box that I knew I wouldn't open in several years, but I wasn't able to.
Because it was Bucky’s letter. It was what he had written me God knows when, it was a letter he had planned to give me several times, but something made him change his mind.
It wasn't just a letter.
It was something else, something I was completely sure that if I opened, I would throw away any opportunity of moving on.
But did l want to move on from that witty, kind-hearted brunette that I had fallen for in a crowded Brooklyn bar?
Days passed by, and in a sunny morning, after driving my bestfriend child to school, I decided I didn't want to move on just yet.
I waited until the kid had jumped out the car to open the envelope.
My shaky hands tore it, and something fell to the car's floor.
A ring. A beautiful wedding ring that made me let out the first sob.
Y/n,
If you receive this letter is because something bad happened to me.
I'm sorry doll, I really wanted to tell you how I feel about you, but I chickened out every time you talked to me.
I'm sure it wouldn't have happened if we'd come this close before I was captured.
I want you to know I fell for those fiery eyes and that damn smile the first time you asked me to dance that night back in Brooklyn, and I hope you know how thankful I am to have been able to meet that gal in the blue dress again, to get to know her.
I'm so mad at myself because I lost the opportunity to tell you.
Bucky
I didn't understand the point of this letter, since he had already told me most of the things written down. Then I realized he had written and crossed my name a few times.
This was the first version.
I'm glad I kissed you again, it felt really nice and gave me hope, but again but I know how is war, and I know you'll end up receiving this letter.
I love you, doll, I'm so sorry I didn't tell you.
I turned the page, tears streaming down my cheeks.
Don't read anything of the other side of the letter, I wrote it before this mission. I wrote it every time I thought I could die, for you to have something mine.
God I'm sorry, I know it sounded stupid, but I want you to remember me. Please, don't forget me.
A couple of nights ago you asked me what would happen if you died. Doll, you're not gonna die while I'm alive, and that's why I know you'll end up receiving this.
I love you Y/n
I knew I was gonna start to read the last version of the letter, and I was not ready. But I couldn't leave it now.
Y/n,
I hope you don't receive this, I wanna come back, I have something really important to do.
I'm 100% 90% sure that I'll get to cross out your name again, and the moment I do, I'm gonna trash this stupid letter and we'll go to Brooklyn.
But in case I'm wrong, in case you receive this, I want you to know that this ring was for you. It still is, it always will, because I'm in love with you and not even death can change that.
I'll be seeing you.
Yours, Bucky.
I couldn't physically move, I was catatonic.
This couldn't be happening to me, I refused to accept his intention was to propose the moment Stark landed in England with Zola, I refused to believe his things were packed because he meant it when he told me we were coming back to Brooklyn.
I convinced myself that it wasn't true for years
6 Years Later
I was picking up the mail when I noticed a particularly odd envelope with my name.
LIEUTENANT Y/N Y/M/N Y/L/N:
We are recruiting former soldiers and agents for a new unit, born from the ashes of the Strategic Scientific Reserve, and founded by Agent Margaret Elizabeth Carter.
We are in need of an expert in the medical field, and miss Carter assured us there was no better nurse than you.
One single envelope that was about to change my life.
The Family Portrait
Chapter 4
A knock woke them up, and the door creaked open a crack.
"Mama?"
"Yes, Inga?"
"Could you help with my hair, please?" She said as she opened the door the rest of the way.
"Yes, of course," she said as she sat up slowly, "come sit on the bed here."
Inga walked over to the bed and then stopped when she heard a snore, her skirt swinging like a bell, brushing the edge of the bed.
"Papa!" Inga chided, "Dinner is less than an hour! You need to get ready. I just had to nag Fred, too. I don't know what they were getting into in the stables..."
Kristoff sat up rubbing his forehead. "Is he cleaning up now, at least?"
"I threatened that Nanny would give him a bath if he didn't start right away," she said with a laugh, adding sternly, "you should do the same now."
"Or you'll send Nanny up here?"
"No… Papa!"
He got up and closed the bathroom door behind him. Inga sat down next to her mother.
"Sorry, Inga," said her mother beginning to part her daughter's blond hair, "I should have had Gerda let us know when it was time."
"No, I'm sorry, Mama, it's just, I do feel awkward when it ends up just being me at these things. I enjoy some of the conversations, but you know what most of them are hoping… ow…"
"Oh… it got tangled in back there, let me work at that," she said, working at it as gently as possible.
"...and I'm taller than most of them. I shouldn't care. I just wish I knew that I was done growing."
"Freddie is as tall as you now. I think you're done."
"You're probably right. But that still leaves me stuck dancing with short foreign princes. But I know you won't understand."
"You'd be surprised."
"Wait, what?"
"There, done," the queen said, pulling the last ribbon tight, "go take a look."
Inga got up and walked to the mirror. "Oh, that is nice, thank you!"
"Have a nice evening, and please don't let anyone bother you too much, it’s just a dinner," she said as her daughter kissed her cheek and ran out the door.
As the princess ran down the long hall, she saw a young man at the other end. She stopped briefly, took a breath, and walked slowly as she had been trained to do when dignitaries were around. She knew several official ships from various countries had arrived that morning, and they would all be at the evening's dinner, but she wasn’t used to seeing any of them on their own.
“Are you lost?” she asked, noticing that he was looking at one of the family portraits.
“No,” he replied, hesitating, and recognizing an older version of the girl in the portrait he had been admiring. “Pardon me, I hope I’m allowed to be here, Your Highness. You would be Princess… Anna Iduna Ingeborg...?"
"It's fine to be here, but most people don't explore alone. And, yes… that is my name. Sorry, you are?...”
“Lars Nilsen, private secretary to His Excellency the Ambassador from Corona. I’m sorry if I’m in the way. I had nothing to do before dinner, and I decided to look at the paintings. I assume this one was a few years ago?”
“Oh, that… yes. I was only nine. That baby is seven now, and there are some more now...."
“Yes, I was debriefed before we arrived, I shouldn’t expect to see the Queen for some weeks, and perhaps not His Highness, either?”
"Are you always this formal, Mr. Nilsen? And you don't sound like you're from Corona."
"I'm sorry, I was rather afraid of offending a member of the royal family."
"I don't think we're easily offended, at least not in that way. And you can call me Inga, if you're not in front of anyone who cares."
"Um, thank you," he stammered, "you can just call me Lars, if you like, Inga."
"There, that makes things easier," she said grabbing his hand to shake it.
"So, how many of you will be at tonight's dinner?"
"Just Papa, myself, and Frederick," she paused to point at the boy next to her in the portrait.
"Oh, yes, I heard he goes by that name," he said as his eyes scanned the portrait some more, settling on the queen holding the baby, "and your mother, do you have any idea how long she's... to be in confinement?"
"She thinks it might be another week or two until the baby comes, though you never can tell. She's always back attending official functions after a week or two. Well, almost always... after the twins, it was several months before she made any official appearances. I didn’t even see her for a long time, and Papa didn’t even come out of the room for a week, which seems like a long time when you’re four…“
She stopped what she was saying as she remembered sitting outside her parents’ door each morning hoping to see them, and Nanny would find her and tell her that she should let her parents rest. Finally, one day while she was sitting outside the room, her aunt was quietly exiting. She knew she was visiting, but had hardly seen her this time.
"Inga!” she gasped, “What are you doing here? How long have you been here?”
I'm sorry, I was waiting for Mama and Papa to have enough rest so they could see me again.”
“Mama still isn’t feeling well,” her aunt said gently, “but I think I can get your Papa.”
Inga paused, biting her lower lip, and closing her eyes briefly, and looked more closely at the portrait she usually walked past.
The young man interrupted her silence, “My mother told me she always wanted a large family…”
The princess realized that she had been monopolizing the conversation, and asked “You’re really from Corona? Your name doesn't sound like it."
“My mother is from Arendelle, and my older brother was born here, too, but they left before I was born. My father had died when… Oh. I was instructed not to talk about that time. I’m sorry.”
“Oh, don’t worry about me. That was before I was born. But I won’t tell,” she said, getting close enough that her skirts were brushing against his leg. “You said you have a brother? Are you close?”
“He’s only a year older. He’s a lieutenant in the navy, just last year. Their ship was back in port, and the captain threw a big party for everyone. Mother and I don’t get to see him as often as we like, but he writes every chance he gets. I even had a letter waiting for me when we arrived here this morning. Three letters, in fact. One from Mother, and another from Elizabeth…” he trailed off.
“Who is Elizabeth?”
“My… fiancee. She’s the daughter of my brother’s captain. I met her at the officer’s party last year, and I proposed right before sailing here. Her letter this morning is that she’s on her father’s ship now, and will be visiting here before the end of the summer.”
“Oh, that is exciting!” she said, not quite sure if she felt disappointed or not, “What is she like?”
“She’s very sweet. She has three sisters, no brothers. Their mother doesn’t go out much when their father is at sea, so my mother helped me a bit, coming up with excuses to pay visits to her mother.”
Just then, Gerda entered from the other hall. “Your Highness, are you dressed for dinner? Oh, good! Your father wishes to see you in the library before you go."
“The library? Oh, well, I suppose so. Thank you, Gerda. Can you see if Mr. Nilsen here needs anything?"
"Of course, Your Highness," she said turning to see the young man.
"Please excuse me, Mr. Nilsen,” Inga said, hurrying away down the hall.
She tried to think of what her father could possibly want to tell her that he couldn't have told her when she was in her parents' bedroom. Perhaps she was just to make sure that Frederick was on his best behavior and not trying to interrupt. But he could tell her that at any time. In fact, she was the one who tried to get him better behaved.
She knocked on the door as she entered.
"Oh, good, Inga, Gerda found you, then?"
"Yes, Papa, what did you want to tell me?"
"Your mother and I were talking this afternoon," he began, fiddling with a book that had been left on the table, then setting it down and walking over to the window.
"Oh, no," she interrupted, "there's someone I need to meet, isn't there? Did someone offer enough money or a good enough trade deal? And why didn’t she tell me herself?"
"What?" Kristoff said blinking in confusion.
"Isn't that what this is about?" Inga realized she was shouting, and took a breath before continuing, "I really could accept it if people would just be transparent about it, but everyone seems to be talking in some kind of code. I'm tired of these mixed messages, looking me up and down, trying to see how clever I am, and how well I dance... Just tell me who I need to marry and what the benefit will be, and I'll do my duty…"
"No… what? What makes you think we would ask you to do that?"
"Isn't that what you're supposed to do with a sixteen-year-old princess?"
"No, I mean, some people do… a lot… I suppose, but… no, that is absolutely not what I was going to tell you…"
"Oh…?" she looked at his face, but he was looking at the fireplace now. He picked up a small vase as he collected his thoughts.
"We were… your mother and I, we were thinking that it's rather unfair that you're fifth in line, and if this next one is a boy, sixth, and…"
"Yes," she interrupted in a monotone, "I'm quite aware of where I stand."
"And, if you'll let me finish, your mother is going to call the council together this week to discuss changing the succession rules."
"Wait… but… what about Fred?"
"Hopefully you'll have a lot of time to discuss that some time in the future, that's up to you. But if anything happened right now, well, just to be sure…”
"Is there anything you're not telling me? Did the doctors say something?"
"No, your mother is just fine," he said, though Inga could see that same look in his eyes she remembered seeing when he finally came out of the room to see her when she was four.
"Sorry, Papa, I guess I should just say thank you," she said as he took her in for a hug, and he seemed more sure this time than the time she was little.
"Just… try to give me a little time to say things first? I don't know what that rhetoric tutor is teaching you. I never had one of those."
"You did have a French tutor," she teased as they sat down on the sofa.
"Yes, after he came storming in telling me that you were asking for Latin and Greek. I was pretty sure we'd hired him for Latin and Greek, but he seemed to think he was just to teach you French until your brothers got older."
"Oh, I remember. It wasn't that long ago. I told him I already know French, and if he wanted to teach French he should teach you."
"Yes, he told me that. I think he wanted me to punish you for impertinence, but I thought it was a good idea. He didn't seem pleased when I repeated the French he was saying, though."
"You didn't tell me that part, just that you sacked him."
"Oh, well, you were only ten. Your mother still hasn't told me what he was saying."
"Well, we should get going soon," she said, jumping up.
"We should see if Fred is already there."
"When are you going to tell him?" She asked.
"If the council decides to go forward with it, then we'll talk about it," he said, "and you don't have to, but I think…"
"Thank you, Papa," she said, running off ahead.
Fairytail Cafe - Part Two
Sorry for the delay. I was having real trouble with this, until I realised that this needs to be longer than a two part story. It will be three, maybe four. I just can’t rush them, okay? I hope you enjoy it. If you haven’t read it, here’s a link to Part One.
Natsu hugged her on the sofa for half an hour, purring to her and stroking her hair until her heart beat calmed, and the scent of fear had left her. With a deep sigh, she got up and went into the bathroom to have a shower. He’d been happily raiding her fridge, sniffing at some questionable looking ham and wondering if it was worth the risk, when he’d heard the first hiss and whimper.
“Lucy? Are you okay?” His hand went to the bathroom door, ready to slide it open to check on her.
Her frantic cry of “Don’t come in!”, had him anxiously pausing. Normally he would just barge in, but after today… He knew he was second guessing everything he did, because he wanted to care for her like a mate would – obliterate the bastard that had frightened her, soothe her hurts, calm her fears, but he hadn’t even told her how he felt about her, and now was definitely not the time. He swallowed, adam’s apple bobbing in his throat.
“Just tell me what’s wrong, Luce” he said, his fingers still curled tensely around the edge of the painted wood of the sliding door.
“I… I’m okay. I just forgot about the coffee, and the warm water is stinging my legs a little. Please just… could you go get my pyjamas, they’re under the pillow on my bed.”
He felt his anger rising all over again, like bile in the back of his throat, but swallowed it back down, going over to her bed to retrieve the neatly folded sleep shorts and singlet from under her pillow. He picked the pillow up for a moment, scenting her usual calming fragrance, breathing it in like a balm to his heated anger and sighing as he exhaled. He was furious at himself for forgetting that prick had splashed hot coffee on her, especially as burns got worse the longer they were left untreated, and the rage he had felt at the café was still swirling with nowhere outlet.
Even though it was hard, he had to push the anger down and keep a level head. Lucy had a lot more experience at this, being the person who cared and comforted, he was more about action, but that wasn’t what she needed right now. He could do this. He would concentrate on caring for her, trying to make her feel better, and hope he didn’t fuck it up by saying the wrong things.
He walked over to her chest of drawers and retrieved a clean pair of panties for her and walked back over to the bathroom to wait. The sound of running water stopped, and he rapped his knuckles on the door, before sliding it open just enough to thrust his arm through holding the clean clothes.
“You’re gonna let me check those burns, right?” he asked, as the pyjamas and panties were taken out of his hands.
“Yeah, okay”, he heard Lucy sigh. He stayed by the door, listening as she towelled herself dry and got dressed, gritting his teeth as he heard a catch in her breath a few times.
The door slid back, and Lucy squeaked as she nearly walked into him, but his gaze had immediately dropped to her lower thighs where the coffee stains on her stockings had been, and he growled at the reddened skin, peppered with tiny blisters, and the dark oval bruises higher up on her leg, like fingerprints too persistent to be washed away.
“Lucy, go sit down. I’ll get the first aid kit.” He waited for the usual rebuff, that she could look after herself, thank you very much, but she meekly went to sit down on the sofa, her head lowered.
When he returned with the first aid kit, she was sitting very still, feet flat on the floor, back hunched, her face buried in a cushion that she hugged to herself tightly. He could only just make out her muffled words.
“I thought… I thought after a shower, I’d feel better. But I can still feel them on me. His… hands.”
Natsu gulped, looking at her helplessly. Maybe he couldn’t do this after all. He didn’t know what to do, what the right thing to say would be, he was fucking terrible with words. He wanted to hug her again, but he didn’t want to do anything that would upset her more. He knelt on the floor in front of her, putting the first aid kit down, reaching his hand out to touch her knee, then drawing it back uncertainly.
“Luce, you know I’m happy to listen to anything you wanna talk about, but did you want me to get someone else? Levy maybe, or Mira?” He rubbed his palms anxiously on his thighs, the fabric of his trousers creasing under his heated grip. “I just… I wanna help, I’d do anything to make you feel better, but I don’t know what to do. Tell me what I should do. What would make you feel better?”
Lucy chuckled into the pillow, but it sounded a little more like a sob. “I don’t know. When I saw the burns and the br…” her voice broke a little over the word, “uises, I…” She lowered the pillow enough to look into Natsu’s anxious eyes. “I want you to stay Natsu. I feel safe with you. I always feel safe with you.”
His heart swelled a little at her trust in him, but that still didn’t help his anxiety about doing or saying the wrong thing. He sighed and nodded. “I’m gonna have to touch you to put a dressing on those burns Lucy. Is that okay?”
She nodded, putting the sofa cushion aside. She prodded his leg with her foot. “Natsu, I’m still me. What’s with the kid glove treatment, huh?”
Natsu looked at her seriously, his hands clenched into fists on his thighs. “That bastard frightened you. I don’t wanna frighten you, ever.”
Lucy gave him a watery half smile. “Since when have I been frightened of you, big bad dragonslayer? Do your worst, hot shot.”
Natsu smiled back. He rummaged around in the first aid kit, disrupting its usual order, then fished out a tube of antibacterial cream. He gently started dabbing cream on the burns, where she had been splashed from the hot coffee in spots from her knees to mid-thigh, being careful of the blisters.
“I dunno Lucy”, he said, looking at them with concern, “I think maybe Wendy should take a look at these.” He definitely wasn’t an expert in first aid, and he never got burned, so he was unsure if he was treating them correctly or how bad they were. Her skin still felt warm, and blisters meant they were bad, didn’t it?
“Let’s just put a dressing on them for now, please Natsu. I don’t think they’re too bad.” He looked up into her eyes and she gave him a small smile. “Wendy’s not feeling well, and it’s not like they’re life threatening or anything.”
He sighed again, but did as she asked, carefully placing a loose dressing on top of each of the burns and wrapping a bandage around each leg to keep them in place.
He reached for the small white jar of arnica cream and dabbed it as softly as he could on the darkening bruises on her upper arm, muscles twitching in his jaw as he clenched his teeth, then moved on to the ones on her upper thigh. After he’d dabbed at those, Lucy grabbed his wrist.
“I… I’ll do the rest, o-okay”, she said, her voice shaky.
Natsu looked up at her in surprise. “The rest?” he questioned, then looked back down at her leg, trying to see what he might have missed.
And then he noticed, peeking out from just underneath the hem of her tiny sleep shorts, more bruising fingerprints on her inner thigh disappearing up towards the fabric covered area of her crotch.
His eyes shot to hers, and she gamely tried to give him another watery half smile. But then her lips compressed, and the corners of her mouth turned down, her bottom lip trembling.
Natsu slumped back a little. He felt like he’d been punched in the gut. He had hoped desperately, that perhaps Loke was being his usual flamboyant self, and was over dramatizing the situation, but here was the proof. That fucking bastard.
“Lucy”, he said brokenly, his own eyes filling with tears, “I’m so sorry.”
“Me too”, she whispered. “I had always hoped…” Her eyes shut, and a tear rolled down her cheek. She pushed at it with the heel of her hand, wiping it away with much more force than necessary. Then her other hand rubbed at another tear, and soon she was scrubbing at her face furiously, almost like she was trying to wipe away her own expression.
Natsu blinked his own tears away and pulled her hands away from her face, cocooning them between his own warm palms.
“Hey”, he said gently. “Be careful.”
She turned her eyes towards the floor, tears dripping down her cheeks. “I just feel so ashamed.”
She startled, her eyes widening as she heard Natsu’s low rumbling growl, a sharp contrast to his previous soft tone. “Don’t”, he said roughly. “Don’t say that. Don’t…” He let go of her hands, letting them drop into her lap and leaned forward to cup her cheeks with his palms, his dark green eyes pinning hers.
“You are Lucy Heartfilia, a Fairytail mage. The strongest celestial mage that I have ever seen”, he rumbled, his voice quiet but firm. “You are courageous, bold and kind, and always ready to step in and help those who need it. A force to be reckoned with.”
His voice softened, and he stroked her cheek gently with his thumb. “You are… beautiful… inside and out. You walk tall, Lucy. You show that bastard that he can’t break you. You are better than him. He’s nothing but scum on the heel of your boot. You shine so bright sometimes that I…” He swallowed, his voice suddenly gravelly, and dropped his hands away from her cheeks. “I mean, there is no reason for shame, none at all.”
Lucy sobbed, but did her best to smile through her tears. He had a sudden memory of last time he had seen her face like this, after her loss to Flare Corona when she had cheated at the Grand Magic Games; had smiled at him through her sobs and said, “I’m all fired up”. She hiccuped a little.
“Can I be strong tomorrow?”
“Idiot. You’re already strong. You always are. But when you need to, you lean on me okay?”
“Okay.” She sniffed, and then he backed away, making space between the on the sofa so she could lean down and pluck a couple of tissues from the box on the coffee table. She blew her nose loudly, and he grinned at her. Since he had finally admitted to himself how much he loved her, he often felt in awe of how beautiful she was, and then she would do things like that, and remind him that she was still his loud and not particularly graceful best friend Lucy.
He watched her blow her nose, hands twitching, one leg bouncing. He knew he had to do something. All these feelings, rage, sadness, empathy and love, were swirling together in his chest like an explosive cocktail, and he wasn’t sure what would happen if they didn’t get released soon. A sudden thought, a way that he could run and let off steam and still take care of Lucy had him smiling.
“How about I go get us something to eat, Lucy? There’s not much in your fridge.”
Lucy scowled at him, teary chocolate brown eyes glowering over the top of the tissue. “Yeah, I wonder who’s fault that is.”
“Sorry”, said Natsu with a grin, bouncing to his feet and not looking sorry at all. “I’ll get you some of that chicken you like. My treat. I’ll be fast okay?”
“Alright”, said Lucy, clutching the used tissue in one hand and rubbing her forearm with the other, still sniffling a little. “You promise you won’t be long?”
“Promise”, he said, jogging over to the window. He paused, balanced in a crouch on the windowsill, and turned to gift her an encouraging grin, then dropped to the ground, running as if his life depended on it.
Twenty minutes later, and he was back, two bags of steaming takeaway clutched in one hand, the mixed aromas making his stomach growl audibly. He easily made the jump up to the windowsill, but the window was shut and locked. He peered in, cupping one hand around his eyes, trying to see where Lucy was. He finally spotted her pacing backwards and forwards in the kitchen, her keys clutched in her white knuckled hand. He tapped on the glass and she jumped, nearly dropping her keys, and quickly came over to the window to unlock it.
“Are you okay?” he asked, dropping in through the window. “The window was locked.”
“Yep, just peachy”, she smiled, but it was another of those empty false smiles that Natsu had become all too familiar with this week. He hated them.
He put the bags down on the table and eyed her carefully.
“Okay Luce, spill. What’s going on in that weird head a yours?”
“Well”, she began, twisting her keys in her hands, “I was just thinking. I don’t know much about that guy, but he seemed fairly high powered. Expensive suit, lots of rings, real gold – one of them had a seal on it, so he’s probably old money, like the people my father used to mix with.”
She started pacing backwards and forwards in front of Natsu. “Those sorts of people, they don’t take no for an answer. What if he goes after Erza, after she embarrassed him in front of all those people at the cafe? What if he goes after the guild to take revenge? What if… what if he comes here?”
Her eyes widened, and she clasped her arms around her body, hugging herself tightly. “I mean it’s pretty easy to find out where I live right? It’s not like I make a secret of it.” She began breathing faster, as her voice sped up and rose in pitch. “Anyone could follow me and know exactly where this apartment is. For all I know he already does know. And he’d probably send someone, a mage, maybe more than one. Those sorts of people don’t do their own dirty work. It could be Phantom Lord all over again and it would be all my…”
Natsu placed his hand over her mouth, stopping the torrent of words. He could hear her heart rate accelerating, anxiety pouring off her like a shaken, gushing bottle of fizzy drink that Mira served at the guild.
“Lucy, breathe.” He took his hand away and said gently, “That’s a lotta thinkin’ for the short time I was gone.”
Lucy chuckled without humour. “Well, you know, overly dramatic Lucy, that’s me.” She bit her lip, worrying the soft flesh with her teeth.
Natsu placed his hands on her shoulders and steered her backwards until she was in front of the sofa, then pushed downwards with gentle but firm pressure until she dropped onto the cushions.
“Time to eat”, he said firmly. “Talking after.” He went to the kitchen and got two glasses of water, then pushed a container of chicken and vegetable stir fry with paper napkins and bamboo chopsticks towards her. “Eat Luce.” He piled the other boxes up in front of himself, and began to attack them methodically, eating through each one without stopping.
It was only when he’d got three quarters of the way through the pile of food in front of him that he noticed that Lucy wasn’t actually eating, just moving the food around with the chopsticks listlessly. She tried to hide a yawn behind the back of her hand, but it was easy to see how exhausted she was.
“You want me to put that in the fridge for you to finish tomorrow Luce?”
Lucy sighed. “I’m sorry Natsu, I really am. I appreciate you going to get this for me, but I’m just not hungry at the moment.” She put the chopsticks down on the table and rubbed her eyes.
Natsu started packing up all the food, putting lids on the containers.
“Hey, you don’t have to stop eating just because I’m not”, she began.
“Nah, it’s okay. I’ll save it for tomorrow. You look like you’re ready to crash Luce. Maybe you should go to bed.”
He picked up the containers and carried them into the kitchen, opening the fridge door and shoving them in haphazardly. When he closed it, Lucy was standing there, looking at him anxiously.
“You’re not going to leave, are you Natsu?” she asked, twisting her fingers together.
He smiled at her cheerfully, even though it hurt him to see the anxious expression on her face. He would do anything to wipe it away.
“Not if you want me to stay. Happy will probably come looking for me soon though. Is it okay if he stays too? Him an’ me could camp out on the sofa and…”
“Would it be weird…”
“I expect weirdness from you, ya weirdo!” he grinned, and then he chuckled when she made a “hmmph” noise and punched him in the arm.
“Rude!” Her bottom lip jutted out in an adorable pout. “What I was going to say, before I was interrupted, was… could… could you… um…”
“Hey, just spit it out Lucy, I’m not gettin’ any younger over here!”
“Forget it”, she grunted, and turned to stomp away, but he caught her by the arm.
“I’m sorry, I was just tryin’ ta cheer ya up. Please, I’ll be good.”
She looked at him uncertainly. “I’m just feeling a little…” She clenched one hand into a fist and pushed it against her heart. “I can’t… I’m so tired, but my thoughts… could you maybe lay next to me while I go to sleep and do that purring thing again?” The last part came out in a rush, as her cheeks flushed red, and she looked away from him. “I was frightened before, and it helped.”
Natsu’s cheeks flushed also, but he smiled, hiding how fast his own heart was beating, how much her request had affected him. “Gladly, Luce.”
He followed her across to the bed, and she slid underneath the covers.
“Is it okay if I leave the window open for Happy? I don’t want him ta wake ya up tappin’ on the glass.” Lucy’s eyes widened, and he added, “I’ll stay right next to the window okay? Nothin’s gonna get past me Lucy, I promise.”
She nodded, and lay down on her side facing him, her head resting on the pillow, golden locks bright against the white fabric. Natsu slid the window open just enough for Happy to be able to squeeze in.
He kicked off his shoes and took off his scarf, vest and socks, leaving them in a messy pile on the floor, and lay down next to her on top of the covers, their heads sharing the pillow.
He looked into her dark eyes and she smiled, the first real smile he’d seen for a while. She scooted over towards him, tucking herself in tightly against his warmth, which immediately triggered a rumbling vibration in his chest. After a moment’s hesitation, he wrapped her up in his strong arms, tucking her head under his chin, his purr sending both of them off to sleep.
------------------
Natsu watched as Lucy emerged from the bathroom dressed for work, her face determined. She was wearing some of her own clothes, black ballet flats and full-length opaque stockings, a circle skirt that came down just past mid-thigh, and a white button-down shirt with a lace trimmed collar and elbow length sleeves. She tugged on one golden pigtail, tightening it, and made sure the white maid’s cap was secured in her hair.
“Are you sure you want to go into work today Lucy?” he asked carefully. She had slept restlessly and she still looked tired. The dark circles under her eyes were hidden by makeup, but he knew they were there. Happy hadn’t turned up during the night, but he wasn’t overly concerned, thinking he’d probably stayed with Erza or gone to Wendy’s. Happy might still be young in some ways, but he was an exceed, and like the cats he resembled, he always found a soft place to land on his feet.
A sudden knock on the door had them both tensing.
“Relax Luce”, said Natsu, trying to quell the anxiety he could feel coming from her direction, “I doubt a mob of attackers is gonna turn up and knock on the door.”
“How do you know?” muttered Lucy, but she stayed behind him as he walked over to answer it, her keys clenched in her fist at the ready.
Natsu swung the door open, and was surprised to see Erza, Gray, Wendy, Charle and Happy there.
“Hi”, chirped Wendy, waving a little, Charle and Happy perched on each shoulder.
“Good morning”, said Erza pleasantly. “I’m glad to see you are both up and looking ready for work.”
“At least Lucy does”, sneered Gray, “Flamedork here looks like he slept in his uniform.”
“Oi, can it, ice prick”, retorted Natsu, heating his palms and running them quickly over his vest, shirt and pants, getting rid of most of the creases.
“Why are you guys here so early?” asked Lucy a little uncertainly. It was still a little over an hour before they needed to start work, and it was only a ten-minute walk from her place. After their first day, they’d agreed to meet at the café fifteen minutes before their shared shift began, rather than meeting at the guild and going together.
“I thought it might be pleasant to get something to eat together at the café as a late breakfast before we started our shift”, answered Erza.
Happy sniggered behind his hand. “Yeah, Erza doesn’t think she’ll be able to manage a whole shift without eating cheesecake first.” He squawked a little and flew out of range as Erza’s fist shot out. Charle groaned and the others grinned at Happy’s reckless quip, everyone except Lucy.
Natsu watched as she bit her bottom lip a little before answering hesitantly.
“Oh. Um, okay.”
Natsu kept a worried eye on Lucy as they walked towards the cafe. She still looked tense and kept continually tugging at the hem of her skirt, as if trying to make it longer, and she kept glancing behind them nervously. This behaviour really wasn’t like her, and he felt on edge, and ready to punch something.
Her legs were still bandaged under her opaque stockings. Some of the blisters had burst overnight, and she had let him apply some more cream to them before putting on clean dressings. The bruise on her upper arm had turned a deep ugly purple, a hand print clearly evident. He hadn’t even realised he’d been growling as he brushed over her skin with the arnica until Lucy had touched his face. He’d swallowed it down, trying to stay silent until she headed into the bathroom to get dressed.
As they got closer to the café, Natsu could hear Lucy’s heartbeat accelerating. He reached out as nonchalantly as he could and took her hand in his, squeezing her fingers, pushing a little warmth into his hand, and rumbled a small purr, as loudly as he dared. He saw Happy look back to them as he heard it, a teasing look on his face, ready to say his usual catchphrase no doubt, but stopped when Natsu shook his head brusquely.
He leaned in close, saying softly, “Ya know Luce, no one would think less of ya if you needed one more day off. I could take you back home…” her hand clenched his, and he quickly changed tack, “or you could wait for me in the kitchen out back, and I could check in with you when I’m on my break.”
Lucy shook her head. “No”, she said determinedly. “I’m better than him, remember. I can’t let him win. And if I can’t go back in today, he wins.” Natsu was about to say that it didn’t mean anything of the sort, but the soft look she gave him stopped him in his tracks.
“You give me courage, do you know that Natsu? Sometimes I’m not very brave. When we’re fighting, sometimes my hand shakes, even with all the help I have from my spirits. But seeing you there, fighting alongside me, makes me brave.”
Natsu snorted. “Luce, feeling afraid when you’re fighting doesn’t mean that your not brave, it means that your smart. Just ‘cause I throw myself at things like a dumbass doesn’t mean I’m brave.”
He took in a deep breath and squeezed her hand, entwining their fingers. “I want… I want to protect you, always. And knowin’ you’re there with me makes me fight that much harder.” They gazed at each other, each holding their breath, afraid to spoil the moment.
“Oi, hurry up you two.”
They looked up to see the others waiting for them at the café, Gray calling out to them through cupped hands, and they let go of each other’s hands awkwardly and sped up their steps, both blushing a little. By the time they got to the door, the rest of their team had already headed inside to see if Mira could find them a table.
Lucy paused at the entrance, her fists clenched. She tugged at her skirt again, then took a deep breath and stepped in, walking over towards the rest of the team.
“That’s my girl, Luce”, said Natsu under his breath, a proud smile splitting his face. He watched the determined swing of her hips, and the defiant tilt of her chin. “Look at you shine, baby girl. Shinin’ like the star you are.”
