Thaana Serndha Kootam Review

Just to reiterate this review is based on my biased opinions and thoughts. There may be some spoilers involved.  

Let’s begin, shall we? :) Thaana Serndha Kootam is a Suriya starrer so no doubt it is a film which has a mix of commercial and indie elements. The film is directed by Vignesh ShivN with music scoring by Anirudh. Just gonna say that I have not watched the original Special 26 so this is gonna be the new film to me.

Obviously, the main star of the show would be Suriya, he basically carried the film on his shoulders but like what more can we expect from a Commercial hero? He looks as young and dashing as ever ( like seriously how is the man getting more good looking as he ages?) Suriya as Iniyan plays a sincere character who sets out to do something when he realises how corrupted the defence system is in the nation. A man who is self-righteous loves his friends and family deeply and sets out to change the face of the corrupted crime department. Suriya deftly eases into this role with little hitches, a sincere man with hints of humour and caring nature. Though, it seemed like Iniyan was hell-bent on proving that he was a good person, though what in fact what he had done was to essentially steal from the rich and hand it back to the needy. A preacher by the situation, it shows very prominently in many scenes and it would have been nice if that had lessened considerably.

Next, moving on to the cinematography, my gosh I loved the look of this movie. Most of the scenes were light-hearted, cheerful and fun. The cinematography was beautifully crafted by Dinesh Krishnan who for the most part gave us a flashback to the 80′s. The shots were colourful and bright, the look of an 80′s movie was present with lighting and framing being yellowish to get appropriate. Moreover, the songs framed especially Naana Thaana and Peela Peela really bringing out 80′s vibe. 

Let’s talk the films soundtrack and the bgm scored by Anirudh. Anirudh really outdid himself here, there were traces of him and Vignesh’s Naanum Rowdy  Dhaan music video soundtrack all over in TSK. The bgm never failed to keep up with the tone and vibe of the film; 80′s and bright. My favourite songs have to be Soddakku and Naana Thaana so beautifully woven together though I would say that Naana Thaana. Peela Peela and Thana Serndha Kootam had the appeal of an 80′s era. 

The Director of this comedy-action-heist film being Vignesh ShivN gave his best attempt at this loosely adapted version of Akshay Kumar film Special 26. I have not actually watched Special 26 so I’m in no way to judge this film based on how much it ‘copied’ from the original. However, I have gathered that the core of the film based on the 1987 Opera House heist along with a lighter tone and bright use of film-making. I’m going to say that this film as a standalone is very entertaining with all the elements of comedy and drama to make it a commercial entertainer perfect for a festival film. The film’s strongest points were the music soundtracks and moments where Suriya becomes a simple man who is helpless against the cruelties of corruption he’s bound in. Although there were many loopholes in the storyline, firstly being the lack of a role in Keerthy Suresh’s character, I felt that the love track could have been avoided in the sense that she had basically nothing to contribute to the storyline in the second half. Next, would be the climax which seems to be rushed and offers no explanation of Suriya finding out about the betrayal nor was there any about the   CBI officers he hired. Also, the fight scene seemed redundant completely unnecessary. Other than that, I believe that Vignesh ShivN did a good job of transporting the audience back to the 80′s. 

Last but not the least, the supporting cast of this film. Ramya Krishnan did a good job I feel essaying her role as Azhagu Meenu alias Jhansi Rani. It was very entertaining to see her in a more comedic role after Baahubali though it seemed that she had not gotten over Sivagami with her sprouting lines from magnum opus ever so often. Veteran actors Senthil, Sivasankar, Karthik and Suresh Chandra Menon were satisfactory in their roles. Karthik plays an honest CBI officer, Kunjivendhan dedicated to eradicating the corruption and injustice served, though his role is overshadowed by and villainised by Uthaman played by Suresh Chandra Menon. 

The film’s lead actress Keerthy Suresh alias Madhu though we hear her name rarely, plays a kind, philanthropist who basically is a fraud like Iniyan. Keerthy is bubbly and cute every bit as an actress in the 80′s would look and be like. Though, let's be honest she doesn't have much to do with the film apart from looking cute and having bits of mischief though it seems for a good reason. I just want to reiterate from my earlier posts on Magalir Mattum the importance of giving female actors proper roles with meat and layers. This is such a sad occurrence with Kollywood’s and Tollywood’s ‘top’ male actors, it disheartening to see and experience the visual that women are only pretty assets in a man’s world. Especially after such wonderful films starring female actors released in 2017; Aruvi, Aramm, Magalir Mattum and such. It only proves that a good script matters more the stars who feature in them.

 Okay, that’s it, overall Thaana Serndha Kootam was a great commercial entertainer much like many of the other films released during the festival period. It was great seeing Suriya do a significantly more lighthearted and different film after a long time.
