Becoming a True Townie
In the almost 4 months since I've moved way up here in cane-ville I've become accustomed to difference aspects of life as a Townie. I would like to share some of these realisations about the people, culture and environment that make up the ingredients to life in Townsville.
I have learnt that shoes are not actually an essential part of every outfit. It turns out it is perfectly acceptable to be walking all around campus without any kind of attire on the soles of ones feet. Another thing about feet is that it is also acceptable to be wearing socks underneath thongs. It is not essential for the socks to be matching - and i think that its even better if they are the loudest unmatched pair of socks one owns.聽
Another aspect of the strange concepts of fashion up here in the tropics is Tropical Shirt Friday. Yeah, its a fun thing to be a part of, uniting strangers as they walk around uni on the last day of classes before the weekend piss-up can begin; allowing them to smile to each other and feel an affinity to otherwise unnoticeable people. I have observed that the more tropical items of clothing, the better. In fact the worse the entire outfit is to the naked eye, the better it actually is. Who can argue with that logic?
Another aspect of the strange life of locals up in this region is alcohol. At almost every social gathering of a good old Australian BBQ is our friend alcohol. Fairly typical and not an unheard concept to get my head around. However the way to get people to actually turn up to these gatherings, whether it be run by student associations, colleges or university faculties, the blanketed foolproof method is to supply free XXXX. No, this isn't a cover up for the obscene use of language in the tropics - it is actually a drink. An alcoholic, piss-tasting canned beer at that.聽
The pub crawls up here are occurring every weekend with various themes and dress ups in an attempt to embarrass people. I have found however that at the drinking parties up here (well in the vet faculty pub crawl) everyone is united in one family and everybody really tries to make sure that we are all having the time of our life. I'm not sure whether this is simply due to the ingestion of copious amounts of XXXX and goon sacks - but whatever the reason, I appreciate the genuinely friendly and upbeat nature of my fellow peers and those in the years above me in vet.聽
Basically the point I'm trying to make is that the alcohol up here is abundant and seems to grow off trees, but it helps to create a really really great bunch of people the be around.
There is an aspect to life up here in mid-north QLD that I haven't yet covered. The Heat (no, not the awesome movie with Melissa Mccarthy and Sandra Bullock - but gee that was a fantastic movie wasn't it?). I'm talking about the heat of the air, the humidity, warmth, clamminess, dampness, stuffiness, steaminess, moistness - whatever you call it! ...except that nobody should call it moistness. Ever. It's practically a crime.
Lets not beat around the bush because the bush has already f*%ing melted (In fact I think it underwent sublimation before I even had to chance to get out my bat for the proposed beating. And when I did reach of my bat I realised that it too had vaporised into thick air). Ever single day up here, no matter if the sun is trying to cause spontaneous combustions, the wind is blowing a gale or the clouds are pelting down with rain - its always that same thing, too darn hot. I don't care what people say about dry heat or wet heat - its all too friggen hot for me. I would say that I have adjusted surprisingly well - for instance I didn't burn to a crisp the moment I stepped out of the car for the first time. Nor does my skin bubble on my various days spent walking around uni to and from classes. I don't believe this is because of the minimal face-neck and shoulders application of 30+ sunscreen because I've sweated it all off by 9AM. Which brings me on to the topic of sweating.
Sweating up here is just an accepted daily thing. I never knew that one could sweat out of every single pore in their body at one time. I now understand the quote 'sweating like a pig' on a whole new level (not that the locals are oinking when they work out - that would be preposterous. I just mean that there are copious amounts of sweat that the human body can produce and this seems to be an exponential amount up in the tropics).聽
Note the glistening? Thats about 1% of the sweat in that photograph. You are lucky that technology has not progressed as far so that scent can travel through computers - if it was, you'd probably be dead.
Nobody judges those with sweat patches (doesn't mean I'm going to get caught out with visibly wet pits!), or the slight whiff of BO after an obvious flustered rush to class. That doesn't mean it isn't any easier to deal with. I think its time to sit down and have a good talk with my nostrils and let them know that they don't actually have to work so well when picking up the scent of other bodies. My nose - partially due to its exceptional size, and also because of some superhuman powers that I possess - is able to pick up the slightest scent of any stench. For this I blame the shared genetics I received from both of my larger-nosed parents, and I know that in picking a potential breeding partner in the future, a small nose is high on the list of requirements to ensure the remarkable size and smelling ability is not a trait I pass on.聽
Overall, when it comes to adjusting to the strange behaviours and weather patterns of this town up in QLD - I think I have done quite well. I have come to love the simple 'she'll be right' attitude, and the welcoming and genuine nature of people sharing their culture with me. And about all that sweat - I like to think that it's my fat melting away. Its easier to deal with with that mentality.聽
I have learnt many things in such a short time about this new and exciting way of life; and when it all gets a bit overwhelming, putting the music in the ears and having a private dance party in your room never hurt anyone (except maybe those wretched fat cells).
聽 Does the craziness in this picture depict the effects of the sudden immersion of oneself into a new and starkly different life? Or is it just a loony escaped from the聽psych-house? Don't answer that.

SPAMMING YOU ALL!
I spent the afternoon with my nan.
She is so perfect and I love her so so much. We just hung outside for awhile, I watered and admired her plants and she rocked her socks and sparkly thongs.聽
Clearly she has style
