I was really interested in the idea that commodities are only as valuable as we socially evaluate them to be. This relates to what I’ll discuss in my third post, but I was especially focused on why designer brands are so expensive. Considering that a shirt is only as useful as a shirt is, regardless of its label, it seemed to me that designer brands must artificially inflate prices because their products are socially evaluated as being superior to generic counterparts. To further investigate this, I read the following article: https://medium.com/@Carlos.Fialho/why-are-designer-clothes-so-expensive-678b323b11b8. There is of course nuance to the situation (e.g. designer brands may use higher quality materials in production process, rent nicer retail spaces, etc.), but what the article essentially asserted is that the product’s exchange value is correlative to its social status: “If it is exclusive and unattainable, it becomes desirable and customers are willing to pay for the product.”

A second quote also says, “We are paying handsomely for the designer’s time and ‘brilliance.’” I found it was interesting that even the word brilliance was put into quotations, as if abstracted. This generalized idea of brilliance speaks to the notion that this designer’s talent is a collective sentiment — that is to say, it suggests that the social world views a popular designer’s talent as intrinsic and undisputed. This thereby socially inflates the clout of the designer. Just like the pearl or the diamond which Marx mentions, the exchange value for the designer clothes may not be that great, but the social prestige associated with it makes it a desirable commodity nonetheless.
