I hate it when I can't use a term that fits me very well because my brain (which processes everything with images) has an image of that term that doesn't look like me.

Like when I think of "transmasc" and all that pops into my head are skinny, white, American boys with very basic styles (which isn't a bad thing, it's just "too basic" for me personally), and of course, who look like cis boys and hate their bodies or prefer other body.

Meanwhile, I'm a POC, fat, Latine person, with questionable style (/joke), who CERTAINLY doesn't look like a cis boy and who really loves their body.

How could I use a term when my brain tells me that term doesn't fit people like me? I hate that. It's just me?

hey anon. i so wish I could reach through this screen and tell you that who you are is perfect and that you have every right to terminology that feels right, but as a fat trans person myself I know it takes more than kind words to deal with a pain like this, and one that’s even more intersectional than mine with your race and culture in the picture.

but that image you have in your head of what transmasc means, that is not the reality. that is what a small part of the community, of the world, WANTS you to think because they would rather throw other members of their community under the bus to gain faux acceptance for themselves, which is NOT your fault, but it’s also not everyone, there are so many people in this community who look like you or who truly stand with you. Transmasculine history is and never has been white or thin or any of that.

I’m going to link a few things you may want to look into if you’re wanting to start accepting your identity a little more, or just to see that you really ARENT alone. trans men/transmascs of color have been part of our history since the beginning. some of these things im sharing may be somewhat nsfw and have the word 'tranny' in them, just as a warning if that stuff bothers you.

Often referred to by the media as the "Goddess of Pop", she has been described as embodying female autonomy in a male-dominated industry. She is known for her distinctive contralto singing voice, for having worked in numerous areas of entertainment and for adopting a variety of styles and appearances. ‘The Apprentice’ Review: Sebastian Stan And Jeremy Strong Soar As Young Donald Trump And His Ruthless Mentor Roy Cohn In Devilish Origin Story – Cannes Film Festival (click for article)

But the political Trump is not in Iranian-Danish director Ali Abbasi‘s compelling film, which instead zeroes in on a specific period of Trump’s life in the early ’70s when he was in his 20s and struggling to make a name for himself in the world of real estate in New York City. But it isn’t just about him — it is equally focused on his unique relationship with his lawyer, the notorious Roy Cohn, often referred to as vicious, cruel, ruthless and sadistic, a take-no-prisoners cutthroat attorney who would win at any cost. The filmmakers have cited movies like Midnight Cowboy, Frankenstein and Barry Lyndon as partial inspirations for their approach, the latter about an 18th century social climber who stands for nothing himself.

Don’t be confused about the title The Apprentice. This is not a movie version of the NBC reality TV series in any way, but instead a smart, sharp and surprising origin story of the man who hosted it. In this case the actual “apprentice” is Donald Trump, infamous real estate developer, former President of the United States and current presumed GOP nominee for 2024.

Trump and Cohn would become an odd couple, helping each other achieve their end goals at the time. That is the story of The Apprentice, which had its world premiere in competition at the Cannes Film Festival on Monday and still has its U.S. distribution rights for sale.

Will it sell, and will it be released before November’s election? We shall see, but this is not a hit job on Trump, and actually considering the 77-year-old we see today at MAGA rallies and dozing off in courtrooms defending his indictments on various charges including starting an insurrection to overturn the 2020 election. Instead, it presents a person somewhat driven but awkward, a man striving for the approval of a tough-love father, unsure but determined to succeed and even oddly charming at times. Yes, I said that. Cohn, responsible for helping Sen. Joseph McCarthy’s reprehensible anti-communist crusade in the ’50s as well as putting away convicted spies Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, was the man pulling the strings — until he wasn’t. Think of it as a twisted Pygmalion with Cohn tutoring and training Trump the way Henry Higgins did with Eliza Dolittle.

“Where’s my Roy Cohn?” Trump once uttered after a tirade about a current lawyer he was unhappy with. Cohn (Jeremy Strong) was his first fixer, and basically adopted the uneasy Trump (Sebastian Stan) upon spotting him looking nervous and alone in the exclusive NYC club Trump weaseled himself into. He took him under his wing and drilled into him the three golden rules he lived by, which considering the Trump of today are prophetic to say the least. Rule 1: Attack. Attack. Attack. Rule 2: Admit nothing. Deny everything. Rule 3: Always claim victory and never admit defeat.

The latter was the one Cohn emphasized above all as the most important thing to remember. He also told Trump no one likes a loser. “Everyone wants to suck a winner’s cock,” he tells Trump, who convinced his cold-hearted father Fred Trump (Martin Donovan) that they needed a lawyer like Cohn to take on a case the DOJ had launched over their housing developments (after being indicted for discriminating against Black tenants). In his own inimitable way he got the government to settle with no fines, thus endearing him to Donald. “You have to be willing to do anything to anyone in order to win,” Cohn says.

The lawyer even dresses his mentee, who was born in Queens; not exactly the right breeding ground. “Is this gonna be a guy from Flushing or 5th Avenue?” he asks, getting an affirmative on the latter. He then puts him on the phone with a New York Times society columnist, and the result is a puff piece comparing his looks to Robert Redford and marking him as an up-and-comer. One of the key Cohn lessons is always chase the press, be in the newspapers every day.

Trump started moving up the ladder, with Cohn bringing him to a party with Rupert Murdoch, George Steinbrenner and others, cheekily (and now ironically in hindsight) telling him, “If you’re indicted, you’re invited.” Cohn himself had been in major legal hot water for tax evasion and also handled shady underworld characters, but he knew how to help Trump’s dreams of finishing Trump Tower come to fruition, essentially rigging a planning commission meeting to get $160 million tax abatement for which Trump was begging.

Separately, he introduced him to a friend, Roger Stone (Mark Rendall), whose “specialty” is dirty tricks and who touts candidate Ronald Reagan’s campaign slogan “let’s make America great again” (a slogan Trump would later steal as his own when he ran for president). And when the top of the still unfinished first-ever all-concrete hotel in NYC is set on fire, Cohn brings Trump to a meeting with some of his mob clients who deliver Trump a come-to-Jesus moment demanding the “f*cking concrete guy” gets paid. Trump is shown already as being notorious for not paying his construction workers.

The film shows his darker side, that scene included, as he is changing, becoming more ruthless himself — even to Cohn, by double crossing his lawyer whose partner has contracted AIDS and needed help in getting a room at the Hyatt; Trump reluctantly agreed but later sent him a bill. Soon Cohn himself contracts AIDS, but they make up when Trump comes to his birthday celebration with a gift of “diamond” cufflinks that say “Trump” on each one. Ivana later tells Roy they were fake.

The personal side of Trump is also on display here as he endlessly pursues Ivana (Maria Bakalova) for a date and after several turndowns finally wears her out. They marry, after she at first refuses to sign the absurd pre-nup Cohn had drawn up (she later does), and it is quite the social occasion. She becomes his partner in the garish design of Trump Tower. They have kids, but even before Trump Tower is completed he has set his eye on the casinos in Atlantic City, convincing Cohn he knows what he is doing (they all later went bankrupt). The marriage also went downhill, with the unfaithful Trump admitting to Ivana he was no longer attracted to her after she initially seemed to be in the mood for some lovemaking. She lashes out, calling him fat, ugly, bald, and orange-faced. A physical encounter ensues in which they have intense sex on the floor. Whether or not it was consensual is questionable at best and likely to be controversial, especially in light of sexual assault accusations and the E. Jean Carroll suit which he lost. Public knowledge of these lawsuits (not in the film) could paint the viewer’s opinion. It appears violent though.

This exceptionally well-researched first screenplay by Gabriel Sherman, who had profiled Trump for various publications and thought the Trump-Cohn story would make a good movie, has turned out a tale that is essentially a Faustian deal between the two. Although they have both been described as monsters in different circles, they are really given an empathetic treatment here, at least in part, and at least in an attempt to show us what led to historical change in America, and what may well continue in a story whose end has yet to be written.

Trump has never seemed so, well, human, as his own early years show a man trying desperately for his father’s approval while at the same time trying to come out from under his shadow. Progressively the two-hour film shows him doing just that, but also losing some of that humanity in the process. I wouldn’t describe the portrait as flattering, but it is not a hatchet job — perhaps part of the reason is a foreign director who didn’t even know Trump before he came down those stairs to announce his presidential bid in 2015. The goal is to show the makings of that man, not who he would later become – no matter what your opinion of that man is. I have a feeling his base of voters, the ones he dug up from under a rock, might look at these early years and give their approval, warts and all. Ironically though the first image in the film is that of Richard Nixon swearing “I am not a crook.” What the filmmakers’ intention with that choice is certainly intriguing.

Special notice to Sean Samsom’s seamless hair, makeup and prosthetics work here which never brings attention to itself.

Stan eases into the role, suggesting the young Trump without venturing into an SNL-like impersonation. He captures him precisely and believably throughout. Cohn has been portrayed in other projects like Al Pacino did in Angels In America, but Strong is ideal casting, going all in and delivering a three-dimensional portrait of this complicated man. Bakalova is excellent in her few scenes, as is Donovan as father Fred who early on tries to explain he is not racist. “How can I be racist when I have a Black chauffeur?” he asks at the dinner table while berating his sons. Charlie Carrick as Trump’s older brother Fred Jr. is also very fine, showing a man who just couldn’t live up to his father’s expectations. Scenes between the two siblings show Donald has at least some empathy.

Coup de Chance

Not sure if I'm "looking forward to this", but I'm curious about Woody Allen's new one as he has hinted this would be his last. Whatever your opinion is of Woody Allen, as a filmmaker he has made some solid films. Opens 4/5.

Civil War 

Alex Garland has had a mixed bag as a writer/director with Ex Machina being his best so far. His new one has been creating quite a buzz about a dystopian not-so-far future where journalists try to make it to D.C. before rebels descend on the White House. No coincidence this is being released during an election year. Opens 4/12 (review to come).

Challengers

What got my attention about this tennis drama wasn't star Zendaya, director Luca Guadagnino or the score from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross. It's the fact that it was filmed in Massachusetts and more specifically it filmed a little in Bedford, where I grew up. Opens 4/26 (review to come).

Pearl Jam Dark Matter

Pearl Jam's 12th studio album is finally year. The band's last album was 2020's Gigaton, which I noted was their best album since their 2006 self-titled album. I'm digging what I've heard so far and hopes are high for this one! Album drops 4/19. (Review to come).

Bruce Springsteen Best of Bruce Springsteen

The Boss has released a number of compilations over the years, his 1995 Greatest Hits being among my favorites. Now there's a new compilation with 18 hits ranging from 1973 to 2020. Album drops 4/19 (review to come).

St. Vincent is back with her 7th studio album. This one features appearances by numerous guests including Dave Grohl and Josh Freese of Foo Fighters. Album drops 4/26.

I've been enjoying Season 12 of Larry David's social assassin. This is the final season (or so they say) and the season/series finale is set to air on HBO on 4/7. End of an era!

I'm a huge fan of Conan O'Brien, going back to Late Night with Conan O'Brien (read my memories of attending his show here) and since then he's bounced back from the Tonight Show debacle with a great run on TBS and his fun podcast. Now he's back with a travel show meeting fans all over the world! Series premiere on 4/18 on Max!

NIGHTWISH Cancels Oslo Concert Due To Singer FLOOR JANSEN's Health

NIGHTWISH has canceled its June 22 appearance at the Tons Of Rock festival in Oslo, Norway.

Earlier today, the band released the following statement via social media: "Due to circumstances concerning [NIGHTWISH singer] Floor's [Jansen] health, we're unfortunately forced to cancel our show in Oslo on the 22nd of June. Floor's pregnancy is totally unaffected, and she heads home for some much needed rest.

"Even though all six of us are gutted over this decision, it was an easy one to make, as health must always come first.

"On a more positive note, the rehearsals and recordings of the new album begin in less than two weeks, so onwards!"

NIGHTWISH played its last concert before its upcoming break from touring this past Saturday, June 17 at Lemonsoft Stadion in Vaasa. Fan-filmed video of that show can be seen below.

In November 2022, Floor revealed that she was "cancer free" after recently undergoing surgery to have a tumor removed following a breast cancer diagnosis.

This past March, Floor and SABATON drummer Hannes Van Dahl announced that they were expecting their second child. Jansen and Van Dahl already have a six-year-old daughter named Freja, who was born on March 15, 2017.

In April, NIGHTWISH surprised fans by announcing that the band was not going to be playing any live shows for the foreseeable future and would be not be touring in support of the group's next studio album, which is tentatively due in 2024.

NIGHTWISH's statement read as follows: "As the 'Human :ll: Nature - World Tour' is drawing to a close, we feel now is the time to tell you of our plans for the next phase in our journey.

"After the planned shows for June 2023 we will be 'hanging up our spurs' for an indeterminate time, as far as live concert performances go, and won't be touring the next album.

"The reasons for this decision are personal, but, we all agree, vital to the wellbeing and future of the band. Be assured that we still love working together, and this decision has nothing to do with Floor's pregnancy or our other individual projects.

"However, an album of 12 new songs will see bright daylight in 2024, as will 3 music videos! The band is positively hyped beyond words over this new upcoming musical adventure.

"Stay tuned for updates from our legendary NIGHTWISH band camp & studio this summer!"

Last December, NIGHTWISH keyboardist and main songwriter Tuomas Holopainen said the band's upcoming follow-up to 2020's "Human. :II: Nature." will be the third part of a trilogy that began with 2015's "Endless Forms Most Beautiful" album. He told Metal Hammer: "I immediately knew after getting that album ['Endless Forms Most Beautiful'] done that, 'Okay, we have to do more songs about this, because there's so much more to explore and tell the world. We're not done with this.' And the same thing happened after 'Human. :II: Nature.'; we're still not done. So let's do one more. At least one more.

"In a way, [the next album] is the third part of a trilogy, which started with 'Endless Forms…' and then 'Human. :II: Nature.' There are some major surprises there again, but it feels like a natural continuation to 'Human. :II: Nature.'"

The film will hit theaters in the fall of 2023. During the fall, the production company held numerous casting sessions in Huesca and Zaragoza to find several of the leading actors and extras. The director Antonio Chavarrías finalizes the filming of 'La abadesa' at the Loarre castle, where the team has been working for several weeks in January and February. The Romanesque fortress of La Hoya de Huesca has once again become the setting for a film set in medieval times as it is a unique location due to its beauty and history, according to the producer. Ridley Scott filmed 'Kingdom of Heaven' at this monument and, more recently, Paul Urkijo chose it for 'Irati', about to be released.

In the film, Chavarrías explores the most human and personal side of a historical character, Emma (Daniela Brown), a young abbess who decides to assume her power to face a patriarchal and dominant world in a society that relegated women to a role socially secondary and without content. The plot takes place in "a dark and violent time". A 17-year-old girl is named abbess and is commissioned to repopulate and Christianize border territories and those at war with Islam.

It stars Daniela Brown, known for her work in series like 'Días Mejores' or 'Com si fos ahir'. She is accompanied in the cast by Blanca Romero ('After', 'Bajo Sospecha', 'Bienvenidos al Edén', 'Física o Química'), Carlos Cuevas ('Merlí', 'Historias para no dormir', 'Smiley'), Ernest Villegas ('La luz más oscura', 'La Caza') and Oriol Genís ('Todos mienten', 'De la ley a la ley').

'La abadesa' is produced by Oberon Media (Mónica Lozano and Antonio Chavarrías), Wanda Visión (Miguel and José María Morales), Saga Films (Hubert Toint. Belgium) and Icono 2020 AIE. It has the participation of RTVE, TV3 and Aragón TV. The film will hit theaters in the fall of 2023 by Wanda Visión. Film Factory will handle international sales of the film. Likewise, the Aragón Film Commission, the Provincial Council of Huesca-Tourism of Huesca and the City Council of the Huesca capital have collaborated.

According to its director, 'La abadesa' is "a story that brings us closer to an almost unknown era, very hard and full of contradictions, to focus on the confrontation of three different, complex and antagonistic female worlds, that of Emma, ​​Eloísa and Clara, only united by their status as women in a world that denies them any of their rights."

Happy Birthday to the Scottish  actress and director Pollyanna McIntosh born on 15th March 1979 in Edinburgh.

McIntosh grew up in Portugal and Colombia before returning to her native Scotland, where she first began performing, on stage, at The Edinburgh Festival. At 16, she left for London and soon became involved in indie filmmaking, her first paid gig was unaccredited as a stoner in the  Irvine Welsh triptych The Acid House, I must remember to ask my mate Gary McCormack if he knows her, as he had a starring role in the film.

Pollyanna moved moved to LA in 2004 where she appeared mainly on stage her biggest role of note was in the stage production The Woolgatherer before she earned her first big screen role, Stacy in 2005’s fantasy horror film, Headspace in 2005.

Although there is not much about her personal life, channel hopping Pollyanna must have been in demand in both the US and over this side of the Atlantic, she turned up in an episode of Taggart in 2009, and some low key US TV movies and a small part in Burke & Hare alongside David Hayman and Simon Pegg. Her first lead role was in a movie called The Woman which won a few awards around the European film festivals.

Back on the TV front Pollyanna was back over here in Waterloo Road and appeared in five of the six episodes of  Bob Servant Independent,  with the brilliant Brian Cox, the same year she turned up in her second Irvine Welsh film, Filth, with James McAvoy. McIntosh also played a regular in the Children’s BBC show M I High as Crime Minster.

Pollyanna’s first major role over in America was in the excellent Hap and Leonard, where she starred as Angel in Season one, she went on to star in two Seasons of the popular series Walking Dead as Anne ‘Jadis’ and has a recurring role in comedy-drama Lodge 49.

In 2020 Pollyanna starred in the horror thriller Revenge Ride about a young woman who joins an all-female gang and seeks revenge on a group of college American football players Pollyanna turned up as Anne in 6 episodes the spin off series The Walking Dead: World Beyond

Sticking with the horror theme that she has found her niche, she has a starring role in a Western-Horror called The Moonshine Gang of Cheyenne which is currently in development, Pollyanna has also turned up in Vikings: Valhalla as  Queen Ælfgifu. Miss McIntosh has a number of projects coming up one being a Sci-fi film The Primary Talent and a short Em & Selma Go Griffin Hunting.

Pollyanna McIntosh does her bit for charity, campaigning for the Joshua Nolan Foundation, raising funds for counselling sessions for grief-stricken relatives and those at risk of suicide, she is married to Grant Show who plays Blake Carrington in the reboot of Dynasty. 

IMDB have nothing new on Pollyanna, but there is a chance that she will appear in the upcoming Walking Dead Spinoff after rumors began circulating on social media that Pollyanna has been seen on the set.

And I've been trying to strike a balance between someone that you might hate but also someone you feel pity for. I also found him really likable at times. He's charismatic and self-assured. I know music is also really important to you in your off-camera life. How was it to play a character that shared your love for music?I was so pleasantly surprised that Jesse Eisenberg and Emile Mosseri, the composer, let me run wild with some of the songs. Jesse wrote the lyrics. Emile wrote the music. And at least for the song "Pieces of Gold," which starts and ends the movie, they just gave me the project file and were like, Alright, sing over it and add whatever instruments you want. It was so cool to be able to improvise a few songs in the film and write the music to one of the songs.That sounds so fun.It was so fun. For [Eisenberg and Mosseri], it added a level of authenticity to the role because I was making music in character. It made me feel more comfortable playing the character, too, because music has always been something that I do for myself. l can just escape to it. And Ziggy feels the same way. You have a long history as Mike Wheeler from Stranger Things. How was the transition from your character Mike, who cares so deeply about his friends and the people around him, to Ziggy, who, at times, really struggles to see outside of himself?Yeah, and he can't seem to care for anyone but himself. I cared about Ziggy almost as much as Mike cares about his friends. Someone who's loyal to themself to a fault. And the reason why he's so self-absorbed and obnoxious is that he doesn't really know how not to be. He's been in a house where he's not been supported in what he's been doing. All he wants is his mom to respect what he does. And it makes him so mad that she doesn't.And on top of that, he has this skewed view of himself, because on the internet, he's so loved, but then in real life, no one really cares about him. And so that comes out as a defense and an arrogance, because, in his mind, if no one's gonna be his champion, I guess he has to be. He actually is capable of caring for people, he just has a really weird way of going about it and at times doesn't know how. By the end of the film, he realizes that the world is bigger than him and that his mom actually does something really amazing. I was just going to ask you about what happens after the cameras stop rolling. There are a lot of conversations about wanting to be political versus actually doing the work to be political. And then there's this open-ended final scene. Does Ziggy end up doing "the work?" Should he do the work?By nature, Ziggy isn't very political. He likes making songs. He likes making money and being a capitalist. And his mother Evelyn has been trying to make him someone that he's not for years. But his mother realizes that he can't be who she wants him to be and that he actually does something pretty cool.He wants to be [political like his mother] deep down, but maybe that's just not who he is. But he can try. By the end of the film, he actually has more respect for his mother and social justice than he thought. And it gets him to think about what amazing things his mother has done. To me, after the cameras cut, there's the meet-in-the-middle thing where they both realize that they have been misguided and wrong for so long. It's a really beautiful end to a really self-centered movie.Are there any larger takeaways you had from working on this movie and existing in this world for so long where politics and identity are really at odds with each other? What did you learn from these characters?It's given me more empathy toward people. Anyone, including myself, that has said something selfish, or acted selfish, or done something wrong, or was arrogant or whatever: I've found more empathy [for them]. It's given me more humanity and more than anything has made me sad for people that are so lost.What was your favorite part about working on this project?I loved the crew so much, every single one of them. And working with Jesse as a director, he really got me as a person and as a performer. That made me feel really good. Jesse really humanizes being an actor. There's a lot of people that like to have acting be some mysterious thing and Jesse's just like, "Listen, we're all really scared and neurotic idiots and we're just trying to make stuff that we identify with and teaches us something about ourselves and other people." Also, acting with Julianne Moore every day and getting to act with one of the best people and best living actors was just the best. She really let me try stuff and vice versa. We had so much fun. My favorite scene to film was the scene where we're screaming at each other in the kitchen. I just remember thinking, This is so fun.You got to let loose a little bit.Exactly! We were really working some stuff out.Do you have any projects coming up? What’s next for you this year?Well, I directed a film. It's called Hell of a Summer. I co-wrote and co-directed it with Billy Bryk, who plays Kyle in When You Finish Saving The World.That's incredible. Congratulations!Thank you so much. So hopefully that comes out this year. On January 21, the festivities surrounding KL Rahul and Athiya Shetty's wedding got underway. The wedding festivities were held with a low profile to protect the privacy of the newlyweds. Though, immediate family members and close friends attended the functions. 

Athiya and KL Rahul invited their guests for a sangeet the night before the wedding. During the celebrations, Suniel and his wife Mana, with Athiya's best friends Krishna Shroff and Akansha Ranjan, lit the dance floor on fire.

On the wedding day i.e. January 23, it was seen that the pair was color-coding their wedding attire. Anamika Khanna, a well-known Indian fashion designer, was responsible for the bridal attire of the couple. Athiya adored a chickankari lehenga in pink tones with embellishments.

She matched it with a full-sleeved blouse with a sweetheart neckline and an uneven hemline, and she topped it off with a semi-translucent dupatta. The actress finished off her ensemble with a maang tikka, a delicate kaleerey, and a hefty stone-studded choker with dangling earrings.

I illustrated Manal Shad, a passionate and brilliant, 14 year old climate activist from Dir, Pakistan for @sojogram, for the spotlight section in their upcoming December issue ✨ It was quite inspiring and refreshing to learn about the young, vivacious Manal, who first came into the global spotlight after getting featured in Oxford Uni alum, Sarah Jehaan Khan’s short documentary titled ‘Passoon’ ‎(پاسون) which means ‘to rise up for a cause’ in Pashto. “Passoon” won first prize at the Girls Impact the World Film Festival in 2020 — the film highlights the work of Manal Shad, a then 12-year-old climate activist speaking about deforestation in a rural, mountainous area of Pakistan. Watching a clip of Manal on social media one is struck with her presence and concern about the environment in her community. “It isn't uncommon for girls to be that vocal in cities like Lahore or Islamabad, but it is relatively rare to see a girl speaking at public forums in areas like Dir where Manal lives and where audiences are almost entirely men.” Manal began speaking out when she noticed that forests in her community were disappearing — loggers were cutting down trees and not replanting. She became concerned that deforestation of surrounding mountains was leading to flooding in towns like hers. “There used to be trees on these mountains, so the soil would absorb most of the water,” Manal says in “Passoon.” “Now they are only absorbing 10% of water. People have always lived in these areas, the issue is with our bad management of resources!” What Manal witnessed in her community is happening across Pakistan. Generational divide is clear in reviews of "When You Finish Saving the World" (2023)

Synopsis:

Evelyn (Julianne Moore) has devoted herself to helping people in hard times, but she struggles to connect with her son Ziggy (Finn Wolfhard), an aspiring internet star oblivious to the problems of the world. As Evelyn attempts to become a parent figure to an unassuming teenager she meets at her shelter, and Ziggy fumbles through his pursuit of a brilliant and politically conscious young woman at his high school, this emotional comedy reveals a funny and sharply perceptive portrait of a mother and son who may seem at odds but who are more alike than either would care to admit.

The directorial debut of Jesse Eisenberg is set out to be an interesting one, with the release of When You Finish Saving the World (2023), an existential coming of age comedy/drama, featuring Finn Wolfhard, Julianne Moore, and Alisha Boe in the main cast. The film premiered at Sundance Film Festival 2022, with the trailer being posted to the public in November 2022.

This film's cinematography is handled by Benjamin Loeb, known for his DOP work on After Yang (2021) and Pieces of a Woman (2020) The soundtrack is produced by Emile Mosseri, who also made the soundtrack for A24's award winning Minari (2020)

Hiding behind the veil of a "typical teen social media story", this movie really tells a story of modern day narcissism, and the dire need to "be good". When the world around you is crumbling, it can often feel like we are dancing on the Titanic - Eisenberg appears to hit the nail on the head with portraying this exact feeling.

Wolfhard's character, Ziggy, is so set on appearing "good" to the people around him. We see this even in the trailer with his constant need to sound like he knows about current socio-political issues, just in order to be liked. This need for attention eventually flows into his music, and then into his relationship with his mother and her new foster son.

When You Finish Saving the World has received incredibly mixed reviews, with some critics saying the characters are "narcissistic and unappealing", while others see the deeper meaning in the film, asking the question "It shouldn’t be this hard to be good, should it? It’s a question worth asking."

The generational divide is clear in critic reviews - this film centres around two generally "unlikeable" characters with a plethora of negative traits, and seeks to show the problem of "fitting in" in today's society through the acts of these two narcissists. As with many pieces of media, we don't necessarily have to like the characters to be able to see the deeper meaning behind their actions - but being able to understand motives and intentions is a benefit that (predominantly) only the younger generations will have watching this film.

Dallas King is quoted in FlickFeast saying;

"Distributed by A24, it doesn’t 'feel' like one of their films. It is a run-of-the-mill quirky indie comedy-drama. Lacking in those 'A24 vibes'."

I'd like to disagree, before even watching the film.

If you watch a film with themes such as the ones shown in When You Finish Saving the World and call it a 'run-of-the-mill quirky indie comedy-drama', you have proven that you have entirely missed the underlying point of the film.

If it doesn't feel like one of their films, then I urge you to indulge yourself in Eighth Grade (2018), a coming of age comedy/drama directed by Bo Burnham, or the soon to be released Close (2023), another coming of age drama directed by Lukas Dhont, both of which are A24 films with those 'A24 vibes'.

Eighth Grade encapsulates what it feels like to be a teenager growing up in a world with social media and constant peer pressure, societal expectations, and more. This film is intrinsically made for a teenage to young adult audience - and should be seen as such.

However, the soon to be released Close tackles much heavier topics; with themes of homophobia and playground insults turning lives on their heads. Again, this film's target audience is a younger generation, and the wider queer community. Someone outside of these circles cannot be expected to understand the underlying themes, however this does not allow room for empty criticism regarding the 'vibes'.

When You Finish Saving the World is set to be released in the United States on the 20 January 2023.
