Peg bars and light boxes

What is a peg bar?

It’s a piece of plastic or metal used in traditional animation to hold your paper in place when drawing and shooting your animations. It’s useful as it not only secures your papers as you work but also ensures they sit back in the same place if you need to take the papers off the peg bar at any point.

There’s a few different types of peg bars as shown in the image below, the most common appears to be the Acme type which has one round peg in the centre and 2 square pegs either side.

Drawbacks of using a peg bar, the most common drawback of using a peg bar is actually obtaining the hole punches used for the specific peg bars. There are peg bars which can be used with regular round hole punches but these aren’t usually preferred compared to other more stable ones.

Peg bars are also often used with light boxes. Combining these 2 tools helps significantly in the animation progress.

What is a light box?

“A light box is a box with a glass (or plastic) surface, with a light source below it. This box is very useful for artists, quilters and even animators to trace their art.”

A lightbox allows the artist to see through the sheet of paper they’re working on, it enhances any dark lines as well which makes it very useful for tracing. It’s also useful for animators as it allows them to see the frame behind the one they’re working on, this makes it easier to make sure everything is in the right place and helps visualise the moment from one frame to the next.

Although buying a light box is easy and can be relatively cheap in modern day, you can also create your own, Don Corgi explains on her blog how;

“Get a transparent container. Anything will do as long as it’s clear on the top. Storage containers usually work very well with this since they are transparent and have a rectangular shape.

Put some portable lights or lightbulbs inside the container! You’ll need a light source so that you can see through the original drawing. I recommend some tap lights like these ones from SOAIY, since they are very easy to use.

You’re done! Just turn the lights on, close the container, put the base drawing on top and then a sheet of paper for you to trace on.”
