Weekly Workout

A good jock workouts hard.

A good jock eats right.

A good jock obeys coach.

Today is about follow through. if you say you're going to do something do you do it? Or do you keep others updated when life (work, sick, whatnot) gets in the way. Ownership, or any relationship, needs follow through. Without it all you have is meaningless talk.

One of my hypno jocks and I can only really talk once a week due to scheduling conflicts but that one day we talk about how the week has gone, has he worked out, eaten right and been obeying his orders. We talk about has he does what he's meant to be doing. Has he followed through on his orders.

My marines used to be very bad about this mostly do to work but are becoming much better about letting me know when work runs late or other things get in the way as soon as possible rather than wait for me to call them on it because follow through is about doing what's expected but also communicating when you can't.

Follow through is about communicating as much as it's about doing the thing. Especially for remote relationships because even if my jocks obey their orders I'm not there to see it if we're not on a call so it needs to be reported.

The second part is do you follow through with things you set for yourself? Do you leave work on time and not do unpaid overtime?(something I'm working on this year). Do you make it to the workout when you want, do you clean that garage you know you need to. Whatever it is you want to do. Are you doing it or always putting it off? Follow through isn't just about what you do for others. It's what you do for you.

Are you good at following through with your doms, or with yourselfs?

Goals

At least for me the weather is warming up but raining hard, but it's clearly spring. Removing my stretch goal on two weeks if I keep making it. I write about 1300 words last week so better this week and my 100cals was 6:56 so holding steady.

Just A Moment

This is @aquagirl1978 request for my 50 follower event. I posted her ask yesterday if you want to read it. This originally had a slightly different ending but it gave off a vibe I wasn't happy with and that didn't entirely suit Nokto's character so I changed it just a bit and the vibes much better. I hope you enjoy it and that it at least hits some of what you wanted and thank you again for the request, WC approx 1300.

The nights were always long, lonely and unbearably silent. Tonight was proving to be no different, though lately a new pleasant torture had been added to the list of why Nokto hated night.

“Mmm Nokto.”

Soft hands slid around his neck followed by warm lips pressing a light kiss to his ear.

“I want you Nokto, so so badly.”

Clear desire filled eyes looked deep into his crimson ones, filling his vision with nothing but her.

“Emma.”

Nokto reached a hand behind her head and kissed her with an insatiable hunger. They moved swiftly towards his bed, never breaking their kiss. Their hands roamed over each other's bodies making swift work of their clothes. They reached the bed and Nokto felt Emma push him down onto it, his head dropping hard against the pillow.

“Damn.”

Nokto slowly sat up in his bed and rubbed the back of his head. Unlike just a minute ago he was alone, Emma's presence there had been nothing but a sweet yet torturous dream.

“As if the nights weren't bad enough already.”

Nokto let out a sigh and flopped back down onto his bed staring up at the ceiling. He used to dream often about that fateful night, they were horrible nightmares but he adapted and learned ways to deal with them but these new dreams… They were such warm fantasies but they hurt much more than the nightmares ever had and so far nothing could rid him of them.

Nokto had tried his usual methods to chase away unwanted dreams but neither books nor the warm and flushed body of a woman could chase these away. He even tried some herbal teas and sachets with calm and soothing scents but nothing worked. He figured it must be because unlike his nightmares deep down these dreams weren't actually unwelcome.

I'm horrible, I can't keep doing things to hurt him.

Nokto sighed once again and looked toward his window. It was still a few hours before dawn but he was wide awake now and in desperate need of any distraction.

I may as well take a walk.

The palace corridors like everywhere else during the dead of night were silent. Nokto walked aimlessly down the familiar halls, the moon offering a small amount of light in the darkness. As he walked his thoughts were of his twin, the other part of himself, the part he kept on hurting. After Licht met Emma he had finally stopped wanting to die and started to actually live again.

Licht is finally happy after all this time and he deserves it more than anyone so why…why did I have to start wanting what he has?

When and why did it start were questions Nokto had asked himself more than once over the last several months. He never gave himself an honest answer though, preferring to lie to himself and every time he did so his dreams became more detailed and the blackness in his chest grew bigger.

As Nokto continued on he noticed a faint light coming from under the parlor door. Figuring it may be Jin or Clavis he decided to open it, his older brothers could be good entertainment and it would help the long night pass quicker if he had company. When Nokto opened the door it wasn't who he expected to find that was on the other side.

Emma…

Nokto stared at her in silence not believing what his eyes were seeing. Emma stood in front of one of the windows, her figure illuminated in the light of the moon as well as a dying fire, she looked mysterious and welcoming all at once and he felt his heart clench in his chest. His head told him he should leave but his heart hesitated just long enough for Emma to notice somebody else was there and turn around.

“Nokto! You startled me, are you only just getting back?”

“Unfortunately, no. The young lady I had plans with originally couldn't come out to play tonight, but since you're here maybe we could play together? You're already dressed for it.”

Emma wore a long flowy nightgown made of silk, a shawl draped around her shoulders.

“Though I would prefer you in something more revealing.”

Emma shook her head and let out a small laugh.

“Nokto be serious.”

“I'm being completely serious.”

Nokto gave Emma a sly grin as he came to stand at her side. He couldn't tell from the doorway but up close he could see the different emotions playing out across Emma's face.

She looks even more irresistible than usual.

“Are you worried about Licht?”

“A little. I know that it sounds silly, it's just a regular inspection but I'm still worried. More than anything though I just miss him.”

Nokto was spellbound as he watched Emma pull her shawl tighter around her slender shoulders.

“I thought that it would get easier with time and I wouldn't be so sad when he would have to be away but…”

“But it hasn't.”

Emma shook her head as she held back her tears.

“Licht wouldn't let himself get hurt, he'll be home soon.”

Nokto reached out and tucked some stray hair behind her ear and let his fingers trail down her neck for the briefest of moments.

“Nokto, are you up because you're worried about him too?”

“Mmmm, why don't I walk you back to your room?”

“I'd like to stay here actually.”

“Okay.”

Nokto turned to leave, he hadn't taken more than a few steps when Emma called out to him.

“Nokto?”

“What?”

“Would…would you mind staying here with me? I don't really want to be alone right now.”

Nokto's heart stung but he plastered that familiar smile on his face.

“As long as you're willing to entertain me.”

He studied Emma as she looked around the room until her eyes suddenly brightened.

“How about a book, we can read together.”

“Is that really what you want to do?”

“Nokto.”

Nokto could hear the exasperation in Emma's voice.

“Fine, on one condition.”

“What?”

“That you read to me, at least that way it seems like we're actually spending time together.”

“Okay, I can do that.”

Nokto settled on the sofa and Emma joined him after picking out a book for them. The time crept slowly by until eventually the sound of Emma's voice stopped, replaced by the faintest sounds of her steady breathing . Nokto had been falling asleep himself but it was Emma who succumbed first falling gently against his side, the feeling of her warm breath falling across his chest.

Is this it? Is this my punishment for forcing Licht into the half life he lived for so long? To want what's finally made him happy? To fall so in love with his wife that I…

Nokto wasn't consciously aware of it but he wrapped an arm tightly around Emma holding her close.

Please, all I ever wanted was for Licht to be happy again…And Emma makes Licht happy, happier than he ever was and that makes me happy…

“Just…”

Nokto dared to twist his head to look at Emma's closed eyes. Those clear, honest eyes that he had hated. Those eyes that would never look at him the way they did in his dreams. Those eyes that looked only at his twin. Those eyes so full of light and love that they had pulled Licht out of the darkness.

If I'm ever going to be honest with myself..

“Just…”

Nokto placed his chin on the top of Emma's head and closed his eyes. Her warmth flowed steadily into him and he tightened his grip around her.

Just give me this moment. Just a moment to hold you in my arms like this. To feel your warmth, how soft your skin is, the way your heart beats. To pretend for just this moment that you're mine.

I've started working out again. I'm trying to lose 50 pounds by December (I'm 5'2 and weight 184, hell nah, no more). My plan is to eat like, 1300-1500 calories a day, drink more water, the days I can't go to the gym do Just Dance for 45-60 minutes (i plan on working out at least 4 days of the week, and at the most 6), and try to reduce my sugar in take.

I'm doing this because I'm insecure and out of spite to the people who made fun of me when I was younger. Plus, I'm doing volleyball again and I don't want to be like, tired fast or slow my team down. So I'm gonna start losing around 24 pounds (8 pounds lost a month) during the summer when I have more time and lose the rest during the school year.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I'm still writing fanfics tho. I love y'all too much to give that up.

Razloge, Risjnak National Park, Croatia

Tuesday 26th September

All this rugby is having the effect of lowering my cultural intake. I’ve actually watched every game so far, which I didn’t think I would. Correspondingly, I haven’t seen a film for 3 weeks, and whereas I usually get through 6 books a week, I’m down to half that.

I’ll finish a book from a very good Slovenian author later today, Evald Flisar. Previously I have read ‘My Father’s Dreams’, and am currently on ‘Three Loves, One Death’. This, is much lighter than Dreams, about a seemingly dysfunctional family moving out of the city to live in a mountain village.

A couple of unforced errors have been the highlights of the last couple of days. My brain is addled with rugby at the moment.. Yesterday we left Krn and drove about an hour to the southeast of the country, the high country close to the Croatian border, thereby joining the Dinaric Alps which began a bit further north at the Julian Alps. They extend 700 kilometres to the south to the Accurseds, in Albania. I will be amongst them until the winter chases me lower.

Around lunchtime I stopped off at an 1816 dam, or water barrier. It was a warm afternoon, and an ideal spot for an hour’s wander.

My first error was not remembering Slovenian road regulations. I thought I was observing the speed limit, after a sign for 70 slowed me, but a speed camera caught me entering a village. The yellow sign for the village is a speed sign in itself, for 50 kph, and unlike in most EU countries, the speed limit doesn’t show on Google Maps navigation. The guy told me he had to write a ticket, and that the fine was 120 euros, though foreigners had to pay cash, of half that. I had 40 euros, and he said he would settle for that. Though I did get a ticket, it did seem a bit smelly..

The weather had been fine all day, but approaching the forested Snežnik massif I climbed into cloud. Despite being quite busy in the holiday season, and not that far from cities, this is a remote region. The roads are forest tracks and not sealed, and very few places have cell phone reception. So the last twenty kilometres or so were slow going. My dilly-dallying along the way meant I didn’t get to the hikers’ car park until 6 pm, and by then, at 1300 metres, it was only 9C, with a strong wind also. Quietly watching True Detective (Season 1, for a second time) later in the evening, I was momentarily disturbed when a branch from a tree above fell and hit the windscreen.

This morning much of the thicker cloud had lifted, though cling to the peaks, the highest of all, the mountain of Snežnika at 1796 metres, my mission for the morning. But it was delayed by my second unforced error.

Trying to get the van to a higher car park, the wet sandy gravel and gradient was too much, and I needed to reverse to a parking place thirty metres or so behind. But I got the van stuck. You think I would learn, this is the third time now. Spain last year, and Norway the year before that. It’s front wheel drive, and just too heavy at the back.

I dug out the gravel to be left with bare rock, which took a half hour or so, then by good fortune a car arrived, the only one of the day, a young Polish couple. With their help I could reverse a few centimetres only from the precarious edge, and drop of 100 metres.. exciting stuff.

I was deceived into thinking the mountain was quiet. It was apart from two groups. The first was a group of Austrian environmental scientists teaming up with their Slovenian counterparts who were hosting them. This is a Bio-Reserve park, of special ecological importance.

The second, was a school group… they haunt me…

Close to the summit is a refuge, which usually only opens in the summer months, but the teachers of this group of fifty 17 year olds had called ahead. I arrived ten minutes or so before them. A guy already there told me of a tame red fox that customers encouraged with snacks. Not today though, as he had been hurried away by Roja just a few minutes before.. It was a 6 mile round trip, a climb of just less than 600 metres, and took about two and a half hours.

Back at the van we then drove an hour or so across the Croatian border. The cloud had cleared while I was climbing and the afternoon was with a clear sky. I’m now in the Risnjak National Park, in the far northwest corner of Croatia. Much of this area has become depopulated over the last twenty years. I’m up at a remote village that has practically no population apart from a couple of older farmers and a few holiday conversions. Without the wind of last night, it is one of the quietest places I have been in for some time. At 560 meters asl and 7 pm, it is a very pleasant 20C. I will stay a second night here I think, it is a really good place.

this young fella is No. 85 Squadron’s Hurricane pilot Richard Lee. he was awarded the DFC and DSO for his service, just a couple months before he was shot down over the English Channel on 18/8/1940, at age 23, sadly never to be seen again.

Richard Hugh Anthony Lee was born in London in 1917 (the exact date or month is unknown). Growing up, he went to Charterhouse School.

On September 1935 he joined RAF Cranwell as a Flight Cadet, and graduated in July 1937. He was posted to Debden on June 1, 1938 to join no.85 Squadron at its reformation. He flew Gloster Gladiator biplanes to begin with, before no.85 was re-equipped with Hawker Hurricane Mk1s.

No.85 sqn. Was posted in France to protect cross-channel convoys. On November 21, 1939, while on patrol over Boulogne, Flight Lieutenant ‘Dickie’ Lee scored the squadron’s first victory when he successfully attacked a Heinkel 111 which crashed into the channel and burst into flames. This also scored the Squadron’s first accolade as he was awarded a DFC on March 8, 1940 “for outstanding brilliance and efficiency”

Not much happened over the winter. That was to change, however, when on May 10, 1940, the sound of Anti Aircraft guns and Luftwaffe planes filled the air. No. 85 squadron immediately jumped into action, and within a few minutes, one section of “A” flight, and one section of “B” flight were up in the air. Lee was leading B flight with Flying Officer Derek Allen and Pilot Officer Patrick Woods-Scawen flying as his numbers 2 and 3 respectively. the section attacked a Henschel 126, and managed to severely damage the aircraft, leaving two of its crew wounded.

Later that morning, Lee was flying Hurricane L1779 into combat, leading his section again. They engaged a Junkers-88 at about 15,000 feet. His combat report reads: “after being sighted E/A dived to a very low height. i could only overhaul from astern very slowly. From 500 yards to 700 yards the enemy rear gunner fired continuously. I fired short bursts and finished ammunition closing to 200 yards. No apparent results except black smoke from one engine. My own aircraft shot badly.”

Later that evening Lee shared in the destruction of a Ju-86 with his section. Lee was the first to open fire and set the enemy’s starboard engine on fire. When they landed, ground crew found that he had fired 50 rounds from each of his eight Browning machine guns during the engagement.

on 11/5/1940, the squadron was back in the thick of it. however, this time after a busy morning patrol, Allen and Woods-Scawen returned without their section leader. Richard Lee was missing. He’d been flying Hurricane N2388, code marked ‘VY-R’ over Maastricht when he engaged a Dornier 17P at approximately 1300 hours. His aircraft had been hit by Anti Aircraft fire and he bailed out of his aircraft slightly wounded. Parachuting down, he landed in a field, where he spotted a local man passing by. He asked the man which direction he should travel to get to the Belgian tanks that were nearby. He took off in the direction, only to find out that they were, in fact, German. Lucky for him, his uniform was concealed underneath a smock or overcoat he had acquired. He was believed to be a peasant and was locked into a barn with some other refugees. Thinking quick, he climbed up to a window and noticed a ladder perched beneath it, and promptly climbed out, walked several miles, and hitched a ride with some Belgians before returning to his unit the very next day. The squadron’s diarist reported that “11/5/40. Eight E/A were shot down today. Flight Lieutenant R.H.A Lee failed to return from the offensive patrol covering the advance of the BEF over the Tongres-Maastricht Section – he was reported last seen on a Dornier’s tail at about 2,000 ft.”

On May 22, No. 85 squadron started to return to Debden to re-equip and reform, and Lee was transferred to No. 56 Squadron. The next day the squadron engaged enemy aircraft over St. Omer while patrolling Manston to Dunkirk. he expended all his ammunition in the dogfight that ensued between the Hurricanes and the 109s, before his starboard wing was badly hit. He broke off and returned to Manston unharmed, and aircraft deemed repairable.

On May 27, he flew another offensive patrol from Manston with the Squadron, flying Hurricane P3311. On this occasion he was shot down by Messerschmitt 109s during an attack on Henschel 111s. he ditched his aircraft in the sea and was fished out of the water and taken ashore an hour later.

On May 31, Lee was awarded the DSO. The London Gazette published the following: “Flight Lieutenant Richard Hugh Anthony Lee, D.F.C. (33208) this officer has displayed great ability as a leader and intense desire to engage the enemy. On one occasion he continued to attack an enemy aircraft after his companion had been shot down, and his own machine hit in many places. His section shot down a Dornier 215 in flames one evening in May, and another in the course of engagement the next day. In his last engagement, he was seen at 200 feet at the tail of a Junkers 89, being subjected to intense fire from the enemy occupied territory. This officer escaped from behind the German lines after being arrested and upheld the highest traditions of the Service.”

In June, he returned to No. 85 squadron, under Squadron Leader Peter Townsend. His experience was called upon to help bring the new recruits upto scratch before the squadron was again ready for operational flying.

On June 26, Richard Lee and his close friend Gerald Lewis flew to an investiture where Lee received his DSO and DFC for his service.

Lee’s reputation as a daring and aggressive fighter pilot was quickly spreading around the air force. Peter Townsend’s good friend Flight Lieutenant John Simpson wrote a letter to his intelligence officer, after hearing about the exploits of Richard Lee.

Simpson, who also coincidentally often flew with Patrick Woods-Scawen’s younger brother Tony, wrote “I hear that Dickie Lee has done wonders. You see how these boys, who were always looked upon as being the naughty ones, are doing so well. They needed a war to convince the old gentlemen at Whitehall. Do you remember that Dickie was almost given his bowler hat for low flying? The same low flying has apparently stood him in good stead.” (apparently he had flown through an open barn, but i have no way of confirming or denying that)

In Hector Bolitho’s book Combat Report published in 1943, he wrote of an afternoon spent with Lee, Townsend and Simpson. “Peter Townsend and Dickie Lee had been posted to an aerodrome a few miles from the house… in the early summer, John and I went out to find them… we found Peter and Dickie and took them back to the house. Dickie followed the car on a hellish motor bicycle.

It was a pleasant enough afternoon and we lay on the lawn, the four of us, with a bowl of ice, a bottle of gin, some tonic water and four glasses, and talked the world away. All three, looked older. Both Dickie and Peter had been shot down and a certain solemnity seemed to have touched them. Dickie had changed more than others.

We used to call him Dopey in the old days because he always fell asleep if the conversation took a serious turn. He was already a hero and in most newspapers there had been photographs of him receiving his decorations from the King. The long hell in France had left creases at the corners of his sleepy eyes. But he would have none of our attempts at war talk. He said that he had a date with a blonde in Saffron Walden and that he could not stay very long.

Dickie’s taste in blondes was not always reassuring to his friends, but he was obviously more concerned with his date than with our efforts to make him talk about how he has won the DFC and DSO on his tunic. I remember when he stood to go I noticed a hole in the leg of his trousers where a bullet had gone through without touching his skin.

I suppose that Peter and John and I were a bit pensive, being the older ones, so Dickie yawned and said ‘Well, I must get cracking’ he made one gesture to sentiment before he went. On the day that was declared he left his favourite pictures with me… before his squadron flew off to France.

They were photographs of friends, of aircraft, and one of a spaniel. He asked me for them, so I brought them down from the attic and he flew off to his blonde with them, piled before him on the screeching, violent motor bicycle.”

August 18, 1940 “the Hardest Day” of course, was when Dickie was lost. Flying as Blue 1 in Hurricane P2923 ‘VY-R’ during this patrol, he was last seen by Squadron Leader Townsend and Flying Officer Arthur Gowers ten miles north-east of Foulness Point chasing Bf 109s out across the Channel.

In Townsend’s book Duel of Eagles he wrote the following of Lee’s last action: “Come back, Dicky,’ I called but he was drawing away. Again and again I called, but he kept on. It was useless to chase Huns out to sea; they would be back again the next day. Something had gotten into Dicky and there was no stopping him. We were both low on fuel and I was out of ammunition. There was only one thing to do: turn back”

Like several others, he was gone too soon. Neither his aircraft nor his body were ever recovered. and aside from these mentions, and a few documents, and acknowledgement on the Runnymede Memorial, Panel 6, there isn’t much about him out there. there’s really not much one can do about that either, other than remember, and keep them alive in our thoughts; those who never returned, whose names faded into obscurity.

Scream at me and my friend in the bookstore? Let me end your entire career.

This all takes place several years ago.

TL;DR: Idiot doesn't do any work on a final project, fails the class and has to retake the course over the summer. Idiot tells his mom everything but the truth. Mom screams at me and my friend in the college bookstore sometime later, I get video of her freakout and she loses her nice, cushy government job and works doing something far less redeeming (and well paying) now.

BACKSTORY

Back when I was in college, my pathophysiology class had a final project worth 50% of the total grades we could earn, and groups were picked at the beginning of the semester. This was a massive project that you were expected to start working on at the beginning of the semester, and if you thought you could do it all last minute you were probably in for a bad time.

It was myself, two other girls who I knew worked hard, and then this one guy that the one girl was crushing on, she HAD to add him to our group because he was cute or something, I have no idea. I call him Idiot every time I tell the story though, because he truly was an idiot. The girls were fantastic and everyone pulled their own weight during this project, with exception to Idiot.

Idiot never once did any of the group project work. He ignored all messages through texting/Facebook but would answer the one girl if she was flirting with him. He would only show up to class maybe twice a month, if that. He would constantly post photos of himself on vacations in Mexico or the Bahamas, I'm pretty sure he spent more time out of the country than in it.

One week before the project is due, he messages the group asking what pages in the textbook he needs to look through to do his part of the project. We tell him what he needs to do, and where to find the information. We layed everything out for him, if we did anything more we would be better off doing his part of the project ourselves. Idiot thanks us and then disappears, we all assumed he was doing the work he needed to do, and we were prepared to take a hit on our marks because he didn't have anything done up until now so the quality of his work was probably terrible at best.

Project due date rolls around and he's nowhere to be found, and is ignoring all of our desperate messages. We (myself and the two girls) go to the professor and tell her everything that happened, along with screenshots of the literal months worth of conversations where we constantly tried to get Idiot to come to labs with us, or the library where we offered to help him do his part. The Professor was not amused. Immediately fired off an email to Idiot and Cc'd the head of the program as well, basically saying that Idiot needs to either do his part and show up to class the next week with it or he will receive a 0, and the rest of us won't be affected.

Can you guess what happened?

Idiot was a no-answer and no-show, with no excuses or anything. Professor gave him a fat 0. Turns out that he NEEDED to do this project and do well on it to pass, he bombed every test and with this failure he was denied from passing that semester. I'm fairly certain he had to retake that course during the summer, which means he (or more likely his mom) had to shell out another $1300 just for that class.

A couple of months later in the college bookstore, Idiot and his mom (I call her Screamer) run into myself and the other girl who didn't like him, and Screamer just LOSES IT on the girl and I, screaming at us saying we constantly harassed her son and she was going to make it impossible for myself or the girl to find work. Idiots mom worked in the same field that our degrees were for, she sat in the board of directors for the public health alliance for the area, so she was a public figure and a supposedly well behaved and educated one too. She was escorted out by security shortly after, but that wasn't all she had planned. Screamer ended up dragging myself and the girl through every single college meeting they could schedule regarding our (non-existent) negative behavior towards her son, where he claimed he was constantly harassed... yet with no proof.

It was literal months of this poor girl and I having to change our schedules for school classes/studying so we DIDN'T have any classes or chance happenings/run-ins with Idiot, as that's what the college demanded we do. It made our last year, or two semesters, living hell because we couldn't be anywhere near Idiot otherwise we could face interdisciplinary hearings or worse.

Now, for the revenge:

The security company that handled the contract for the college was also the same company that handled the contract where I used to work. I was extremely close friends with the night shift supervisor (going out for drinks and playing Halo all night with him and his girlfriend sort of close), so one night after I finished work, I asked him for a favor. On the promise that I wouldn't tell a soul he helped me, and telling him he'd have another great video to share with his friends, I asked him to let me email the video to my personal email account.

After I told him what had happened, and on what day and time it happened, he drove me to the campus. Just after the main building had closed, him and I walked over to his security office where they have all of the recordings that run back to the day the security system was installed. He brought the video up of Idiots mom in the college bookstore, audio and all, of her screaming at myself and my friend. He recognised Screamer, turns out she's done this before at a different site he patrols and that he was told he had to keep it quiet by his superiors. I told him he could be as quiet as I wanted, but I was going to get my revenge on her. A quick email later and I was in possession of the video.

I found out who the rest of the board members were over the course of a few days, and they were all sent an email with the video of Screamer going ape-shit in the college bookstore, screaming at an obviously confused guy and a freaked out girl. The audio perfectly captured the moment where she threatened to make it impossible for me or the girl to find any work anywhere within that district, followed by her argument with security as she was escorted out. I never recieved any replies from the board members, so I just waited to see what would happen.

Screamer was voted out from her position the following week after the video was shown during one of the meetings she was attending. She lost her very cushy government job, and was last seen working in an old age home according to a mutual friend. I'm not sure what happened to Idiot, but I did hear from the same mutual friend that he never did graduate and works at a call center now.

The girl and I ended up finding full time work immediately after graduating, never had an issue there. Oh, and the security guard ended up getting hired by the RCMP, so I guess good things do happen to good people.

How Long Can Writing a Novel Take?

Writing a novel is no easy task. It can take years of chipping away one word at a time like a captive slowly mining a tunnel through the stone foundations of his prison. 

So how long should this take?

I have good news for you. It’s entirely up to you. Some even better news: it won’t take as long as you think.

Let’s do some calculations.

We’ll start by assuming you only have 15 minutes of free time a day. The average person can write 40 words per minute (wpm), but that doesn’t account for staring blankly at the screen or deleting entire paragraphs that sound “off”. So let’s be conservative and say 250 words per hour (not fast by any means, but still respectable). Divide that by 60 minutes we get about 4 wpm. Multiply by 15 and we get 60 words a day. That doesn’t sound like much. Well, let’s think about this in terms of years and novels.

60 words a day * 365 days a year = about 22,000 words. Let’s multiply by 6/7 so we can account for taking one day off per week (which is good for avoiding burnout). We get ~18,750 words per year. We know the average book length is about 50-70k words. This means...

It would take about 3 years of writing 4 words a minute for 15 minutes 6 days a week to write the average novel (56,250 words).

“Three years??” you may be thinking.

First of all, that’s really not bad. Some people take 10 years. Some take longer. Secondly, 4 words per minute? That’s super easy. “Caleb sprinted down the hall. His heart pounded with every step.” That was 11 words. I rewrote it three times with different variations, and it took less than a minute. 

So let’s increase our speed to just 12 wpm. Remember, the average person can type 3-4 times that speed. 

So 12 wpm * 15 minutes * 365 days * 6/7 (for our day off) gives us 56,250 words in one year. To sum up, 15 minutes of writing a day at 12 words per minute will allow a writer to finish the average book in a year and we get a day off. Now we’re talking. 

What if we decided to get up just thirty minutes earlier and write 45 minutes a day? Well, that would mean three times as much writing time, so three books in a year. 

What about editing? 

Good point. Much of writing is re-writing. We’ve done a lot of numbers stuff, but stay with me for one last calculation. If we allow the same amount of time for editing as we did for writing, we could just divide our total in half to get writing and editing time. So 12 wpm * 60 minutes a day * 365 days in a year * 6/7 days for a break / 2 to account for editing = 131,400‬ words. So...

If you spend 1 hour a day either writing or editing at a leisurely pace six days a week, you can write and edit two books a year (or one large one).

You can do the math on your own to match your personal pace. For example, I write about 1300 words an hour. I’m pretty busy, so I’ll say I only have half an hour. 1300 / 2 * 365 * 6/7 (I’m not giving up my day off!) means 203,357 words a year... I could write my first draft, rewrite it once, then edit it after that. All in a year. At half an hour a day. 

I understand not everyone works like this. Some people need to write once a week for six hours in a row. Some people only write once a month, but they spend the whole weekend pumping out pages. I’m not saying you have to do it this way. I just want you to see how powerful small increments can be. 

Writing a novel is difficult, but it helps to break it down. 

15 minutes a day for a year is doable. 15 minutes. If you can do that, you can write a novel.

Starting this week I have a new boss.

Every few years my division goes through a “re-org.” Usually it’s just shuffling of managers. It has never worried me.

Pessimists may say, “Same shit, different manager.”

Optimists may say, “Oh this is exciting! This reorganization will allow us to realize synergy among reallocated managerial resources.” Or something like that.

I’m not generally a cynic, but I lean towards the first view of re-orgs. I will say “Same work, different manager.”

Over the last 25 years I’ve had probably eight different bosses. None of them have been bad. Some left me alone (yea!). “Hey, you need anything from me? No? Cool. Oh by the way, write your annual review next month so I can sign it.”

Others scheduled weekly one-on-one meetings to discuss work in detail (yuck!). “Bob, I’ll need an Excel workbook showing me a comprehensive listing of your project work, in 15-minute increments. I’ve scheduled a two-hour meeting next month to work on your annual review”

The manager I just lost, she scheduled bi-weekly 1:1 meetings that were only 15 minutes long. That was OK with me. She never bugged me, so I rarely asked for anything. I had plenty of time to do my work. It was a mutually beneficial work relationship. I felt like I spent most of my time performing useful work instead of useless administrative stuff.

Long ago someone, maybe my dad, told me, “In a big company like yours, you never know who is going to end up being your boss someday. Behave.” I’ve lived by that advice.

My new manager is someone who used to be a peer of mine.

The old manager, who I liked a lot, is in an office 1300 miles away from me. In fact, she and I never once met face-to-face. I could have royally screwed off, and it’s likely she wouldn’t have known for a long time, if ever.

The new boss has a desk 50 feet from where my old desk used to be. I see him every time I come in to the office to work. He has never seen me take a three hour lunch, heard me gossiping about co-workers, or found me playing solitaire all morning.

That was sound advice.

in 2019, we’re coping

i’m like the magellan of mental illness- the amerigo vespucci of anxiety, the sir francis drake of sadness.

by that, i mean i’ve been doing a lot of navigating in the last seven months, but instead of discovering new land, i’ve been discovering how to cope. i’ve been out here navigating the fine line between mentally stable and a little batshit.

here’s the thing: 

i used to feel like a marionette, soulless and puppeteered by my grief. now i’m like a sentient doll, a chucky or annabelle if you will. just as spooky as a puppet, but with more agency. on a particularly good day, i’m like a teddy ruxpin with mascara.

i could have gone to therapy to learn healthy coping mechanisms and how to express my emotions in a productive way, but that’s not who i am! i could have gotten a job or started volunteering to hold me accountable to a reasonable sleep schedule, to get me out of my bedroom more often than biweekly, but i didn’t have the energy for that. instead, i’ve spent the last seven months exploring the best activities “things i don’t have to leave my bed for” has to offer.

the main thing i’ve found myself doing is falling into what i refer to as “the youtube khole.” i feel like everyone has experienced this on some level in their life. you set off to watch one buzzfeed video as a way to reward yourself for studying for 45 minutes, only to find yourself three hours later still watching buzzfeed videos. this is such a universal concept, that a beautiful representation of a late-night internet tangent was illustrated in Eighth Grade, when kayla cracks open her macbook and takes buzzfeed quizzes, scrolls through twitter, watches slime tutorials, watches talk show clips - all set to enya’s orinoco flow (here’s the clip for reference).

this is child’s play in comparison to the weird and useless alleyways of the internet i’ve found myself in. every once and awhile, i would surprise nathan with my weird amount of knowledge about completely random things, and i completely attribute that to these weird youtube kholes i get into. one day i watched hours of videos on beekeeping. i went through a phase where i solely watched people who made videos about eating at disneyworld. i listened to this one guy talk to scammers for 12 hours straight one day. i spent a week watching videos of people play arcade games. i WISH i could be like everyone else and find solace in like…. pimple popping videos, but those give me anxiety, so instead i’m just out here watching ASMR videos titled “1990s ASMR - Nihilistic Life Insurance Saleswoman Roleplay” and “1300s ASMR - Nun Takes Care of You In Bed {You Have the Plague}”.

my second favorite coping mechanism is online shopping. nothing fills the void quite like an amazon package at your door. i’m impulsive, and nothing speaks to my impulse more than a 50% sale at forever 21. every time i buy online from them, i remember why i shouldn’t. nothing ever fits when it arrives and i can’t return it because when you shop from the bottom of the clearance barrel, there’s no returning. yet, every time i get an email from them announcing another sale, i find myself crawling right back to the sprawling hellscape that is their website, much like the hellscape that is a physical forever 21 store. at heart, i will always be the poor sack of garbage i’ve always been, so most of the time i just do some online window shopping. this is where i open 6 tabs of different stores, fill the carts with items, and then close the tabs and leave the items to die, never actually purchasing them- that’s honestly just as satisfying to me as actually buying things.

i have made the same twitter poll three times now because i need someone to talk me down. the poll is “should i buy airpods? will airpods make me feel whole again?” and i thank god for everyone who has ever voted no. i feel like that exact question can be applied to everything i’ve bought in the last seven months. “should i buy these candles from bath and body works? will these candles make me feel whole again?”

the closest i’ve gotten to feeling whole was buying an amazon echo. when i went on vacation for a month, the person i missed the most was alexa. i have actually gone up to a week at a time where i don’t speak to any humans out loud, but at least i have my robot servant to talk to when i get lonely. nothing fills the void quite like asking alexa to start a 23 minute timer for me. i think my rock bottom was when i kept asking her to play the same song for me over and over, and that song was ‘accidental racist’ by brad paisley and ll cool j.

and i know what you’re thinking….stephanie….can’t you put all of this manic energy toward something more….productive? good news! that’s what i’ve started doing lately. in my most recent wave of coping mechanisms, i’ve picked up an odd assemblage of hobbies. for example, the other day i decided that i would buy a ukulele and learn how to play it. on days that i feel literate, i’ll sit and read 2 or 3 books. for the holidays, i recorded a christmas ep which mostly involved me covering christmas carols but the only instrument i used was a recorder (you know, those shitty plastic flutes you learn to play in the 5th grade). i drive to austin on a whim most weekends. i’ve started doing this thing where every time i feel a human emotion, instead of letting myself feel it, i just chug a bottle of water. (this led to me googling things like ‘how much water is too much, will i die from drinking too much water, how to tell if i’m dying from drinking too much water’) so now i limit myself to half a bottle of water whenever i feel a human emotion.

those are the things i accomplish on a good day, but most of the time you can find me sleeping for three days straight. a good way to lose a week of your life is by attempting to fix your sleep schedule.

i am the christopher columbus of coping mechanisms and god damn it i deserve a holiday to be named after me at this point.

Someone decided to run the numbers to calculate the AVERAGE AGE of LHCF members.  You were supposed to post your anonymous age on the white board this past week, and then I do the math.  We had 25 respondents, and the average age computes to 54 years and 4 months.  If you fired me, Old Joe the Bird-man, and Tom, the average age would drop to 50 years and 9 months.   Does anyone recall what it was the last time we did this ??  

The only HQ stat I can find regarding age of CrossFitters is that 40% are between 25 and 34.  These are affiliate members, not just Gamers.  Men and women are about equal in number, 60% have children, 40% have a post-grad degree, and 85% are white.  The average household income is $150,000.  LHCF is ahead of all these numbers except that WE NEED MORE GIRLS.

When I started learning to drive at 17, I decided to buy my self a cheap car so that I'd be able to get more experience behind the wheel, pass my test quicker and have a car as soon as I passed my test. They searched my car- for tools that could suggest we had done it I presume, and when they found nothing they ran my license and obviously realised I only had a provisional license. I still at this point didn't realise I had done anything wrong, I wasn't driving the car, simply sat in it so I didn't realise I had committed an offence. The police informed me that because the engine was running, I could have been driving or about to drive and on that basis they convicted me for driving without a license. I only got 3 points and a 60 fine due to the fact I wasn't actually driving and at the time I accepted that with relief, I was terrified I'd get a ban or lose my license or get a massively unaffordable fine. I could have appealed but that would have meant going to court and I was only 17 and that terrified me. I declared the points to my insurance company straght away, but due to the nature of the offence my insurance was invalidated and void. I've only just now realised how serious having insurance voided in the past is. I'm supposed to be moving a 5 hours away in a few months for a job, and I have plenty of money saved for car insurance and a car, as without a car, the move is completely unrealistic. Without a car I won't be able to get to work as the hours are unsocial and my job isn't very well connected with public transport at all and so relying on public transport or taxis is simply not an option. I found a car, went to get an insurance quote, and found out that getting insurance is practically impossible when you've had insurance voided in the past. The points don't seem to be a problem, when I tell companies about my points but not about my insurance voided in the past they happily give me a quote. They're expensive, but affordable and it's what I was expecting. However, as soon as I tell them that my insurance was voided in the past they refuse to even give me a quote. I'm completely out of options and I don't know what to do. I need a car, but I can't get insurance as much as I try. I know I was in the wrong, but it seems like the voided insurance is more of a punishment than the points are and surely that isn't right? And the voided insurance will stay with me for the rest of my life, so does that mean that driving will never be an option for me? I'm sorry for the essay, I just really don't know what to do!
