No one told me that Marketing is mostly working with people that have a very specific idea of what they want you to make, but won't tell you what it is, but will get very upset when you don't deliver that on your first try.
#honestly tho it's like a fun little puzzle#im making an ad for a super popular event and the events coordinator has been here for awhile and knows what she wants#she will not communicate that to me#she also will not communicate the proper information to me most of the time?#like she told me to make a post thanking the goodwill foundation#so i put the goodwill foundation into my prebuilt donor thanks post and sent it to her for approval#she told me she wanted it to be specifically event branded and also it was goodwill industries not goodwill foundation#so now that im making the ad blessedly she gave me more specific instructions however#i sent it to her for approval and she said 'actually the title is different now. also there's another sponsor you need to include#even though i didn't put them in the sponsor spreadsheet.'#so now im rearranging everything (i dont mind. again this is just a little creative puzzle)#a fun puzzle of figuring out how to fit all of the images and info she wants into a 4.937 in. by 10 in. ad#i dont care honestly#it's like giving your high energy dog their meals in a brain teaser toy. i have a lot of posts prebuilt bcuz things are similar#so now that im getting something new and novel it's a fun little challenge#i have had so much caffeine today and it's all hitting now

i've got quite a lot of fics written but they don't seem complete or cohesive enough to leave my docs,,, i don't know how to outline fics so everytime i get back to them im all over the place and end up doing things from the beginning do u have any advice :,)
so... mhm... this is an interesting question. First of all I GREATLY appreciate you asking but unfortunately this installment of King's "advice column" is going to be half rant, half pep talk, and like maybe a sneaky 3% advice because the truth is... I don't know.
first off: I don't outline anything. Never have. The few times I do outlines it's for the sake of "trying to outline" and never because i wanted to. If you ever see me say the phrase "my outline" what Im actually referring to is the dance-break hallucination of the characters I've set to whatever Top 40 song Im listening to at the moment. I... cannot help you with outlining. Not really.
But I have some things that may help you overall. It sounds like the problem you have is with editing, not writing. Which... if you're new to editing or haven't edited a lot, can be entirely tedious and confusing and you might be saying "ach, but whats the difference!" - the difference is everything. I, personally, love editing. editing is where a story comes alive and can be perfected. If you have a finished full draft of a story, and you truly dont know where to go next... the next step is to be done with it. Literally. I've been working on a personal novel for about 2 years now, and half that time is spent waiting. Put away your draft, write something else. In 2 months, 3 months, come back to it and read it again, change anything you're no longer satisfied with. You'd be SHOCKED how much just taking a break from a story can improve your understanding of it. You may think of things to change in this waiting period - hold off. Hold it in. Let it stew. consider it caramalizing onions. there's simply no way to rush it. NOW - you expressed the sentiment of "i always end up doing things from the beginning-" I say... no you dont. That IS editing. My story has fully changed from front to back multiple times. That new draft you wrote from scratch? congrats, thats your second draft. Not your first. then you do it again. And again. Until the edits become smaller and smaller and smaller. And then when you hate it enough, you say "i cant possibly touch this anymore" and thats when you let someone read it.
And the truth is, they should have been reading it before. Feedback is infinitely important, in the editing process. You cannot expect to only ever show the best product. I have friends who have read drafts of my novel that wouldnt even be able to recognize what it is now. but I could never have gotten it to this point without their feedback. You have to be okay with letting someone - even just one person - see your bad first draft. THEY will be able to tell you where your cohesion is or isnt and how to improve it.
BUT that brings me to a second point, and the idea that this is probably fanfiction. Now, your initial ask was a little vague, so consider the first response there me being under the assumption you were interested in completely finishing a novel or short story with incredibly serious intent. Now Im going to assume you might be looking to publish chapter by chapter or take it "less seriously" because its just for having fun.
And to that i Say:
if youre publishing chapter-by-chapter (and writing chapter by chapter) your cohesion is gonna be shit!!! thats a first draft youre putting out into the world, babe, its gonna be ass! but embrace the chaos!!! I have learned and developed SO MUCH as a writer by publishing chapters one at a time, namely how to "punch through" that lack of cohesion. Consider your first draft a challenge. no matter how many errors you make, you are NOT allowed to go back and change it. that thing you committed to chapter 2? well its chapter 18 now and you either need to address it, or ignore it and hope your readers dont comment. You are beholden to your own writing and theres nothing you can do. Make it work. Its probably not as bad as you think.
Which brings me back to my initial point - dont trust me on cohesion!! Or, maybe, don't trust *yourself* on your judgement of your story. I'm assuming if you're asking you like at least 1 of my stories, so here's that aforementioned peptalk bit from the beginning:
if we're talking about incohesive stories and bad choices and things that REALLY should have been edited, I'm the (hehe puns) King of them. (I sometimes just vaguely think about Paranormality and want to tear my hair out - and yet this is one people seem to love the most!) here's two facts from my stories that are currently still available to read on ao3:
1. In "The Island" Jasvir and the rescue team make a 24 hour journey in about 6 hours (Because I forgot where New Zealand was and didnt fact check before)
2. In "Soulmake Adventures" Tendou describes how Ushijima stays at his apartment when he's "in the city" despite that city being Tokyo and the home base for the Adlers and Ushijima really should, like, have a home. (It did not occur to me to even check)
And Honey, if you think I had a plan for even one goddamn second of Paranormality you're mistaken. Holy shit it's just nonsense after nonsense after nonsense. I REALLY should have like, at least at one point, like... thought ahead. I just kept shoving stuff in and backpedaling and doubling down on things. But it was FUN to write. And people had a lot of fun reading it. I could edit it into something cohesive, but I dont think it needs that. I think if youre writing fanfiction, maybe its okay to just let it be a little bit loose and fucked up for the sake of the joy of it.
here's.... uh.... 3% advice:
1. have an ending. the stories where I know what my last scene (or my last line) will be always get drafted easier and with less stress. I dont mean have an ending idea. I mean literally mentally map out the last paragraph. Really helps me keep on track
2. talk to people. Walk them through your premise and your themes and what you want it to be. saying it out loud almost always will start clicking puzzle pieces together.
3. learn editing. unfortunately im not talking about grammer and spelling, i mean proper content editing. You have to build this skill seperately from your writing.
4. accept that your first draft is for vibes and fun. Push forward and do your best to "force it" however you need to, but;
4.5. understand that deleting work is part of the creation process too. If you do scrap an entire draft and start over, youre not "starting over" - youre starting draft 2. Thats editing!
#advice corner is peptalk corner now ig#this one was useless but i hope it helps in even a small way#i love receiving asks of all kinds so plesse feel free to keep sending them

YES YES YES YES !!! I really like when people rant about stuff !! Either from fandoms or just like how much they hate life, It’s like this sense of “omg they are being so real :0” and I love ranting as much as I love to hear it ! Plus I can get annoyed pretty easily when something doesn’t go the way I want,,, which is every time, so it’s fun to just rant about stuff,,, meaning that my friends might be tired of it— IT IS FUN THO PLS RANT WITH ME EVEN IF YOU DONT KNOW WTF IM TALKING ABOUT !!
-JDA here-
Oh !! That sounds really nice !! Silly how I know nothing about visual novels, they never really catch my attention cuz I’m dumb at reading, but then that one rabbit hole I told you happened and now im just waiting for news on every game- they’re silly !! And i like silly crazy guys !!
Same ! Lusting for characters is just oof— top tier, especially when you have someone to talk to about that one character !! Just bla bla about how much you love them !! Ooo so sweet !!
I don’t really have a type when it comes to fictional crushes,,, uh sometimes they’re cute and nice and others they’re not even human !! Ig they make me laugh then that’s all it takes.
Painful, the worst I’ve felt is have my feet paralyzed until I move them with my hand—
Im kinda curious about that silly power you have but tbh I think I’m too honest here so I don’t think it’ll be much of a challenge,,,
-also don’t Z post (but also PLEASE Z post) I will go feral and eat him yes this is a threat, for Z-
Exactly!!!!! I loooove when people rant at me about anything!!! In Yiddish there's this word, kvetch, which is sometimes used in English but they don't quite use it right? Kvetching has a more positive connotation in Yiddish, it's the Jewish tradition of complaining recreationally. Just like whining/ranting about shit for fun. It's one of my favourite things!
Silly crazy guys are great!!! Honestly, I have a bunch of different types when it comes to characters, but if you show me a pathetic man who looks like he'd whimper if I bit him, I'm melting. Or like an easily flustered monster!! Or a woman who's silly and goofy and causes problems on purpose!!
Oooof yeah paralysis sucks. I've started getting these muscle contractions that lock up whole sections of my body really painfully for a few minutes.
My silly little power is just being able to tell what kinks a person has just by looking at them. I have a 100% success rate so far, including people who told me I was wrong when I first did it and then came back later and was like "fuck you were right I was just in denial" lmao but my discord friends mostly like to use it by sending me a picture of a character so I can tell them what kinks they'd have.
>:3c no one can stop me Zposting!!!! I drew a really stupid lil comic of him that shows off how untrained I am at art and also how silly he is, I might post it heeheehoohoo

so ive been following your fx's backstory au for a while, and ik you haven't mentioned this for now so if it's a huge spoiler or something you haven't worked out yet then feel free to ignore this, but how does jian lan and her relationship with fx fit into your au seeing as that is one of the two positive relationships canon-vise we know feng xin had with a woman?
and on the same note, what about fx's relationship with xl's parents? they both seem fond of him in the canon, queen more so than the king, so im super curious to see how that would be involved in your au. will there be more on the mutual animosity between qi rong and feng xin as well? are fx and his father the only ones with ties to the royal family, and does fx's sister have any strong feelings for them or any sort of connection?
side characters are soooo fun to play around with, especially when it comes to characters like fx who were barely given backstories at all!! if you ever decide to publish this as a fic, i will be the first in line to read it!!
for reference: | more asks (1) | more asks (2) | meet the OC's | #fx backstory au | THE FIC (ao3) |
Ohohohoh yay more questions!!! (this was totally not sitting in my inbox for 6 months... to the day 😅)
1. Jian Lan and Feng Xin <3
Jian Lan is the first female relationship Feng Xin attempts to navigate on his own. I think he’s basically an overgrown teenager trying to deal with his first crush. It doesn’t start as one, but through their talks it grows that way fast. To be honest I don’t add too much to Jian Lan’s canon backstory (at least for the moment) since I think a lot of it is self-explanatory. Feng Xin did indeed love her. And she still sent him away. We don’t know the reason why, but I think its mostly because of his relationship with Xie Lian.
Comparing Feng Xin’s feelings for Jian Lan and for Xie Lian is a bit like comparing apples and oranges, they are completely different types of love and devotion. With Jian Lan his feelings are new, novel, and a bit of light in the very dark time that is book 4. It’s easy and its indulgent. But at the end of the day, Feng Xin can’t imagine his life without Xie Lian. Whether because he wants it to be that way, or because of his obligation as his guard (I think it’s a bit of both) his loyalty means that he will prioritize Xie Lian every time. And even if he loves Jian Lan, and she knows this, she also knows he simply can’t prioritize her. It doesn’t matter if its romantic bc Feng Xin cannot prioritize his romantic love anyway. And I really do think that’s the reason she kicks him to the curb. There’s no point in continuing something that can’t possibly work out. (There was a reason for FX, this was his escape, but at the end of the day it wasn’t his decision to make.)
As for how this all ties in, it just adds to Feng Xin’s belief that he’s cursed when it comes to women. They either die, hurt him, get hurt, or leave. It might not be true, but it’s a belief no one has ever challenged after his sister scared the shit out of him with it, so what else can he do except trust his gut?
2. Feng Xin and Xie Lian’s Parents
Im SO glad you asked. Feng Xin has limited knowledge on the parental front lol. He sees a lot of his dad in XL’s dad, but his bias toward Xie Lian means he is constantly on the opposing end of XL’s arguments with his dad. He finds this dynamic incredibly difficult to manage because he wants Xie Lian to get along with his father, but he can’t ever see a way for that to work.
Xie Lian’s mother, however, might as well be the mother Feng Xin lost. When XL and FX are around 5/6yo and start to become friends the first person XL introduces him to is his mother. He is, understandably, scared. But quickly warms up to her as he sees how important she is to Xie Lian.
3. Qi Rong, Shen Liang, and ties to the royal family
Y’know, I hadn’t thought of much in regard to him (maybe thatll change now). He really just see’s QR as a self-centered little brat. Their values cannot be more polar opposite. His job is to serve and protect, and QR has a history of doing whatever the fuck he wants and ignoring how everyone (except XL) is affected.
Shen Liang does not have any connection to royalty. So that makes it very easy to blame the crown when her mother dies. (Grief can make you believe anything if you can tie the right strings together). I’m still figuring out how much blame she has, but it does revolved around Xie Lian since both him and her didi were born around the same time and there was a lack of resources for her mother, with a very premature baby fx, because of the expectant royal heir (who was also late term.)
.
I hope that answers everything. Next chapter coming soon (first draft is done!), im very excited to share, hope you are still excited to read, anon! Thanks for the ask!
#even when i feel like ive thought of everything theres always questions that make me go WAIT HOLD UP#i feel like i may have repeated myself between this ask and the last but its fiiiine#asks#fx backstory au#scrapped scabbard#oc shen liang#tgcf#my writing

The Freedom of Expression Ep 33 - Fujikawa Kyuji's retirement, & a mystery safe, & an appeal for mystery location suggestions.
K: Hi, this is Dir en grey's Kaoru starting this episode of The Freedom of Expresion. Joe san, Tasai san, welcome. Um, I've brought a copy of Tokyo Sports with me..
T: Thank you!
K: Its this page...Fujikawa Kyuji's retirement.
J: Even I understand this.
T: Yeah..How do you feel as a Tigers fan when you see this, Kaoru?
K: Well...Im wearing him on my t-shirt..
J: Yeah, thats cool.
T: Its really cool.
K: Well, I quite like him....out of all the Hanshin players.
J: If you were to explain it to a baseball novice like me, what is special about him as a pitcher?
K: His fastball, yeah his fastball.
J: He doesn't throw curveballs, right?
K: Yeh. His fastball burns through the air...well, at least it seems like it. I've never stood against it so i don't really know, but...*1
And then, even if they know a fastball is coming, they can't hit it.
J: Even when those professional batters know a fastball is coming...
K: He's gotten better and better since 2005 when they won the league.
J: What is his max throwing speed?
K: Hmm, what is his max?
T: Isn't it around 150km?...But it's not just his speed..
K: There are people who throw faster, but no-one can hit his throws.
J: Ah, rather than speed, he has the power to stop the batters.
K: Mm, even if they hit it, it never goes very far.
T: They say its like the ball grows out.*2
J: Ah, like the ball grows out from his hands?
K: He's retiring, but the season hasn't ended yet. He's in the second team at the time of this recording, but there's still a chance he might rise up and throw for the first team. I really wanna see him throw in this season. He only needs 5 more saves to get into the Golden Players Club.
J: Oh yeah right?! Wouldn't you like him to get in, right? Can he not play for another year? Is that no good?
K: No, he can't.
T: He's already worn out.
K: He's apparently been intending to retire since last year. But he did surpisingly well last year. Well, it sounds a bit wierd to say it like that, but...(haha)...he managed.
J: I see, I see.
K: But this year, it seems like his body is starting to grumble at him.
J: Ah, he feels its time to step back. How old is he again?
T: I think he's 40 this year. He's in the Matsuzaka generation. He was born in 1980.
K: In the All Star series, players like Kiyohara or Cabrera...was it Cabrera? They say 'Straight out'*3
J: Oh, before they throw?
K: Yeh, like when they are going for a fastball
J: Incedible.
K: And then they get three strikes. Its like they want a manga-style showdown. It does sometimes seem like manga, right?
J: Yeh, like 'Star of the Giants'.
K: Yeh, yeh.
J: Or 'Apache Yakyuugun'.
K: And they really do get three strikes.
J: So cool....Well, one way to look at it is, he is still a star of the baseball world.
T: Well, yeh. Every player has to retire at some point.
K: Yeh, its sad, but..
J: What will he do? Will he become a commentator? Or a coach?
K: I think he'll become a coach. He's still active at this moment though.
J: So what about Hanshin winning?
K: They will win!
J: Oh, good. Haha.
K: But the Giants are strong...they never lose.
J: Lets take it step by step.
K: I hope they do.
J: This is all we ever say, haha, hoping they do well.
K: Hmm, well, yeah. Ok, Joe, could you tell us today's topic.
J: Yes, ok well I'd like to introduce some kinda mysterious news this time 'Unsolved mystery of metal safe placed right in the middle of field.' A large safe has been discovered in the middle of a farming area in New York state, USA. By whom, when, and why the safe was put there is a complete mystery. However, the land owner has said, 'Its best just to leave this mystery as a mystery'. A note stuck on the side of the safe bared the message, 'If you can open this safe, you can have the contents of it'. Despite the land owner saying it shoud be left as a mystery, large crowds gathered attempting to open the safe due to the note. But eventually, they were ordered to leave by the police.
K: I like this.
J: Do you?
K: Yeh, I do. I love stuff that makes no sense.
J: What is this all about? I wonder whats in the safe? What part of this story are you most interested in, Kaoru?
K: Well, I wonder what type of safe it is, first of all.
J: Yeah, it just says its big. Maybe like the size of a fridge?
K: And its in the middle of a farmer's field?
J: Yeh, someone must have carried it there.
T: Yeh, first of all someone has done that.
K: And the land owner is saying just to leave it there?
J: Yeh. I kinda got the feeling it would get in the way of the crops though.
T: Right.
K: So, the farmer didn't put it there?
J: Yeah.
T: Well, thats not written here.
Kamk: No, I bet he did.
K: Haha
J: The landowner?
Kami: Who else could have done it? Yes, he did.
K: Hahaha.
J: Is that the mystery solved then?
Kami: The mystery is him saying its fine to just leave it there. Thats stupid. He's orchestrated this himself.
J: Kami, what do you think is in the safe?
Kami: There must be some money in it at least.
J: Ahh.
Kami: Just a bit of money...
T: Do you think he's hiding his Playboy collection in there from his wife or something?
Kami: He wanted to make it into the news.
K: Ahh, well thats possible. Anyhow, its interesting.
J: Yeah.
K: This type of thing is really good.
J: Mm, its not hurting anyone, its not benfiting anyone..
K: Yeh, when the crowds gather the police will move in, right?
J: I also think this kind of thing is really interesting.
Kami: Don't you have a garden at your family home, Joe?
J: I do, but its not big enough to fit a large safe in it. A ??? *4 would fit though.
K: Would you be ok if a crowd gathered?
J: No no, that would be no good.
T: Haha
J: Its not that type of garden. It would be tough if they all turned up..everyone would be like, 'Whats going on??!' Its right on the edge of Hachouji, quite rural. Your neigbours are right there. Its different from the middle of Tokyo. The neighbours would be shocked.
Kami: I wanna do something like this on this show.
J: Yeah. A kind of unexpected happening.
K: Like what? A set-up?
J: Yeh, yeh. Not like a mean joke, but.. just something to see how the world reacts to it.
K: Ahh, I see.
T: Well, thats already happened once with us, with the sound mysteriously cutting out.
Kami: Tokyo Sports could write an article about it.
K: But even if we devised something, we wouldn't be able to say anything about it, right?
J: Yeh, we wouldn't be able to.
K: So we could only set it up..
J: But if everyone was talking about it, it would make the news.
K: And then we could make it a topic here someday...
J: Someday...ten years later or something?
K: Noo, you wanna do that? Haha.
J: I wanna do something mystery related though.
K: Kami could set something up?
J: Oh, thats a good idea.
T: Yeah.
K: It would be fun if we tried to solve it.
J: Yeah, it would. Do you normally like reading detective novels?
K: Yeah, I do. I don't read tonnes of them though.
J: Aren't they doing that type of thing in trains and stuff recently...JR did it..
T: Oh, they did.
K: Like a detective game?
J: Yeah its like a game.
K: Our drummer is really into that kinda thing.
J: Oh, yeh yeh yeh. Shinya did say that he liked it. But I think this type of thing is pretty exciting.
K: Should we go and try that type of thing out?
J: Should we reserve it?
T: Yeah.
J: I wonder if any are on at the moment.
Kami: Lets do it!
T: Ah, but in this kind of situation (i.e. covid )...
K: Right, they might not be doing them at the moment.
T: I think I saw something going on in Shimokitazawa or somewhere before though. Like a mystery solving challenge.
Kami: Lets go to a mystery/supernaturl spot.
J: Now we've arrived at mystery spots.
T: Eventually.
J: Should we go?
T: This is our (Tokyo Sports') speciality.
K: Right? Well, I've been waiting for this too.
J: Eh? Is that ok for you?
K: Yeah, its ok.
J: Its quite scary for me.
K: Really?
J: Yeah, I get really scared.
Kami: So when I say a mystery spot I mean something like going up a slope the wrong way or something *5, not something scary.
J: Oh, that type of thing? Kami, I want to ask you this...are ghosts real?
Kami: .......... Yes.
J: But they are different from you, right?
Kami: Yeh. I mean, to be honest, I don't really know.
J, K: Hahaha
J: Well, you might get into trouble if you were explicit about it.
T: One of our reporters apparently had a UFO experience near Chosho city, in Chiba.
J: Would that be ok though? UFOs?
K: Would it?
T: They apparently appear quite often in Choshi.
K: Really?
Kami: Aren't UFOs a bit scary?
J: They are too scary!
K: They are not scary.
J: Have you ever seen a UFO, Kami?
Kami: Um..
K: Ah! I got it! Lets appeal for ideas...Of any mysteries people know about.
T: And we can solve them.
K: Mm, and then we can go to the place.
J: Lets do it.
K: Ok, everyone, if you know any mysterious, not scary..well, a little bit scary is ok...
J: Just a little bit. No real haunted places.
K: Yeah, not like that, but any places with a bit of mystery, that make you wonder.
J, T: Yeah, thats good.
K: We can go to that type of place and try to solve the mystery.
J: Yep!
K: So please send us your ideas! I want us to go somewhere.
J: Me too.
T: Yeah, me too.
J: Its not exactly the TFoE detective club, but..
T: Ah, that sounds cool.
J: We'd be off to solve the mystery.
K: Like with one of those big cameras?
J: ???
K: ???*6
J: Yes, like that, like that. Oh, im looking forward to it.
K: Ok, well, lets end here. Please subscribe. Thank you very much.
T: Thank you.
*1, 2, 3 I know nothing about baseball, so im doing my best to interpret this.
*4 Couldn't catch.

i love the demo up to now but im getting very mind blind vibes from this (mysterious traumatizing childhood event which tore your family apart, determinable relationship with your brother, unapprochable older RO (ansel and ambrose), cold edgy RO where you have to be kinda rude to get their attention (teagan vs k), and just like, general vibes) and like this isn't a bad thing but i think it's important to keep in mind and make sure your story has its own remarkable distinguishing features
This story is loosely based off of a short story that I wrote when I was in University about a decade ago. The two stories don’t have anything in common in terms of plot anymore (especially since the short story was Postmodern realistic fiction and HEAVILY influenced by Chuck Palahniuk), but the entire family dynamic was based on the main character, then called Jamie, who was struggling with depression and suicidal ideation, and his family, who seem to be oblivious to what’s going on with him. Sun is a pretty close equivalent to the brother in that story, whose name was Graham. Graham was the successful older brother, the one who, in Jamie’s eyes, was everything his parents ever wanted out of a kid. He was also the only one in the family who seemed to notice what was going on with Jamie. The parents in Ninelives are also very similar to the parents in that story, only the family dynamic had to do with the mom giving the dad placebos for an imagined medical issue and lying about it for years. Jamie inadvertently discovers this and has to decide between exposing this or keeping it secret. (The two stories actually start in the same place; the bathroom. Only, in the original story, Jamie was in the bathroom after a failed suicide attempt, trying to OD on the very meds that his father took, which is how he discovered the placebo thing.) I was eventually planning on turning that short story into a novella with the main theme really touching on visibility of mental illness, but between all the writing I was doing for school and some personal issues in my own life, that short story got dusty in a digital folder on a USB drive I have somewhere. Can you believe those used to be a thing? But I digress.
I have read Mind Blind, and I’m not going to pretend that it (as well as other IFs I have read) didn’t influence me to start this project. So you aren’t totally incorrect. There are similarities, but the similarities don’t come from me basing my content off of Mind Blind. Rather, prior to deciding to try my hand at writing IFs, Mind Blind reminded me so much of this short story from college that I finally decided to revisit it, albeit reshape it into something new. And, hey, that’s Structuralism, baby.
So I can definitely understand feeling these similarities at first glance. That being said, it’s also quite early in the story still, and there is a lot the MC doesn’t know, even about their own brother.
So I guess what I ultimately want to say is, give it time. I don’t personally find the characters that similar, but I also have the advantage of knowing what’s going to happen in the story. It’s definitely my goal for this story to be its own unique beast, and I hope to live up to peoples’ expectations of that. The last thing I want is to rip off of someone else’s content. >.< It’s something I always try to keep in mind when I feel inspired by other works.
I want to touch on this subject more, and I love talking about my characters, but I don’t want to ruin anything for people who want to go in blind, so I’ll talk about the rest under this cut. No spoilers, just more background information.
Ansel is actually one of the most approachable characters in the story. If you’re referring to a specific scene that occurs with a specific choice, there is a reason that he is unapproachable in that situation, and it’s something you will get to talk about with him should you trip that flag. The thing about Ansel is, there’s enough going on with him already, even after a single day, that a player might choose to be suspicious of him. And for good reason. I want to say more on that, but honestly it’s hard to talk about what’s going on with him without touching on major spoilers, so I’ll just say that Ansel is probably the easiest character to get close to (besides maybe Rene), provided you don’t let your suspicion stop you.
Sun is in a similar boat as far as the “hard to talk about without spoilers” thing. There’s something more to his overprotectiveness besides just being a loving sibling. Ulterior movies is definitely a somewhat large focus of some of this plot, and this could become a conflict with more than one character, depending on what the player chooses to pursue. Can’t say more on Sun without heading into spoiler territory either, but your relationship with him could end up really terrible for completely justified reasons later, or you can keep it pretty great, or it can be a mix of the two. I wanted that to be determinable as well as fluctuating with him because sibling relationships are rarely ever one or the other, and I didn’t want to impose that choice on players, especially not since I was already imposing a bad relationship with the parents. I hate taking away player agency when creating their character, but there are some things I just have to do to railroad the plot in the right direction. I didn’t want Sun to be one of those things.
Teagan ultimately appears a little bit tropey. I would go so far as to say there is one of him in a LOT of interactive fictions out there. Tropes aren’t necessarily a bad thing - this is how we, as a society, have formed recognizable archetypes. But that’s something I want to work on with him. My goal is to give him his own flair. Once we start seeing Teagan interact with characters like Alex, Lucia, or Rene, he should start to show his true colors a lot more. One of my major goals with this story is giving the ROs significant opportunities for personal growth, and Teagan is one of the people who needs this the most.
As an addendum to Teagan, he actually doesn’t respond well to people being rude to him, even though sometimes it might seem that way. 🤣 Poor guy is pretty socially inept and doesn’t have a very high emotional intelligence. Ansel also doesn’t challenge him to be better, which doesn’t help. If he smiles or smirks in response to a comment or a dialogue choice, it would be safer to err on the side of caution and make zero assumptions on what it means. There are a couple of smile/smirk scenes in there that are actually considered negatives for him. I’ve been having a little fun with this, because the choices that might seem like the “right” ones to increase relationship when we’re talking about other IFs or visual novels, for example, are often not the right ones with Teagan.
The good news here is that getting to know the characters and getting close to them in Ninelives is more about just spending time with them and learning about them than it is about making “wrong” choices. I play a lot of visual novels, and one of the things I’ve always disliked about them is how often a single wrong dialogue choice (one that usually seems arbitrary at the time) locks you out of certain routes or brings you to a game-over screen. I’ve really never like that. Between that and the fact that fully-released CSGs don’t have a save feature, one of the things I decided early on was to remove anything that resembled a game-over mechanic or a complete failure to achieve something. When applying that to character relationships, that means players are going to get ample opportunities to get to know the characters without locking themselves out of friendships or romances. This doesn’t mean there are no consequences to being an asshole to the characters all the time, but consistently failing to pick the "best” reactions with characters isn’t necessarily going to ruin your chances with them either.

AU where marceline is the school's local harana for hire she writes quick songs for anyone who wants to have a song sung for anyone for whatever reason they want
It's usually a lot of love songs (she's gotten tired of this really fast) but sometimes she gets requests for songs for friends
Anyway, Lady and Jake help her out with this business by making bouquets and playing along with her respectively. And Bon is usually just someone she bounces ideas with cause Marce may know so many people, but there's still a number of rich prissy losers that Bon knows and that's usually her clients. Also, Bon loves getting to stretch her writing skills.
(Though she's also pretty tired of love songs)
Marce gets a commission one day to make a song for Bon and she just kinda. Stares at it. Her clients aren't anonymous. Well, not usually. A lot of her songs are made from shared memories and the small percent made from flowery words are usually douchelords who are too confident about their place to think they'd need anonymity in case of rejection.
So when she sees that this one didn't have a name she was a little... confused. There was also the fact that Bon is notorious for saying no to everyone who tries to ask her out. And not in a way where friends tell friends this, but more of she said no to a guy who payed the whole school to get in on his grand plan to ask her out
(Even Marce tho it wasn't for a song. It was more of he asked her to drive Bon to school at a specific time. She obviously told Bon this but they didn't have a lot of time to talk about it bc the guy texted everyone their roles literally on midnight and wired the cash after sending the message.
A little worrying how he not only got everyone's number but also everyone's bank account. She and most of her friends changed phones then bc that was creepy as all hell)
She doesn't tell Bon. Not because of some customer confidentiality or whatever but because... Well she doesn't really know. It just made her irrationally irritated and sad. Odd.
She takes far longer than usual to reply to this. She doesn't understand the hesitation. Or maybe she does? Bon has called her a bleeding heart a million times and she guesses thats the reason. She feels bad for them and doesn't want to watch another person who put in effort be rejected. Yeah that's it. She should tell him that. Maybe they were new or something. It'll be fine, plus they didn't want a full song so they werent paying much. Yeah, that sounds like a game plan.
The next day she says yes and wonders all day why she did that
For about a month she keeps this commission to herself. She spaces out more than usual during this time. Not quite disassociating, just staring into space and thinking.
Bon isn't worried bc this is usually how she gets when she's got a song in the works. She needles her about what it is and who it's for, but she generally deflects and at some point just straight up lies and says some random names.
She also learns more about her client. They're not new, they've actually known Bon for about 3 to 5 years. They're pretty close apparently and actually knows Marce personally. Theyve talked several times and have hung out here and there too. (That sure didn't make her anxiety and paranoia skyrocket)
She feels a lot of anxiety and worry and trepidation and god other irrational shit about this commission. She doesn't really tell anyone (something her therapist, or Bon more importanly Bon, would frown at) so she's just left to wallow about it on her own. She tries working on it as much as she can but it just feels... wrong somehow. She doesn't really get it but she feels like she'll lose something because of this. She doesn't get it. She knows they'll be rejected and they'll all laugh at it in the end and just.
What is it. What's wrong.
She feels a tap on her shoulder and she almost falls off her bed. Jake's apparently been trying to talk to her for a solid minute and oh jeez now he's got that Worried Big Brother look.
He peers at her and asks what's wrong and not-so-subtly threatens that he'll stay and use his Big Brother mode on her if she tries to lie to him
She just sighs heavily and curls up
"Someone commissioned a suicide mission"
Jake makes an 'o' with his mouth. Theyve always called anyone who tried to flirt with Bon a suicide mission and laughed pretty hard at it. Even Bon calls the poors souls who try suicide missions.
She uncurls a bit and faces Jake with a small smile, ready to laugh with him about it as she should. But for some reason Jake just... Looks at her with this worried look. Not his patented Im-Worried-For-You-Little-Sibling but more of one would give to a friend when they know something they don't.
Marce laughs, shakey and unsure. "What? S'not like this doesn't happen. It's Bon, ya know? The sweatheart of the school." With a mean streak that rivals the devil, she adds quietly- fondly- in her head.
Jake just nods slowly. He drags his eyes away from her and stares at her wall, eyes unfocused.
Marce starts having a bit of a panic because what is that face, why is Jake acting like this, is there somethin on her wall, wait does he know the client, is he friends with the client, is he the client, w-
Jake flops his short, chunky body on her bed and pulls her to lay down too. Roughly, might she add. And not to mention absolutely unexpected.
He's smiling again, big and all teeth. It twitches for a second when he makes eye contact but bounces back so quick she thinks she might have imagined it.
"Ha! You're gonna write for a suicide mission this is hilarious!" He makes a move to ruffle her hair and she just starts flailing to avoid this. "Man! I haven't seen one in a while so this'll be fun at least. Something else to keep us busy other than those stupid douchefucks who thinks a song is a sure fire way to get laid."
Marce is confused but doesn't question this sudden change. Plus it actually helps? She snickers -because no, she doesnt giggle she is cooler than that- at the thought of watching the client be rejected before Marce can even pull out her guitar.
"Yeah, threw me off like hell cause Bon is practically legendary but hey apparently there are still some brave souls out there."
"Oh dude, I've got a great ass idea," Jake sits up and leans on his elbows, "Let's keep this a secret from princess. Oh and Lady cause you know she cant keep anything from her."
Marce kinda laughs at this in confusion. "Uh what? Why? If you haven't noticed my services include a bouquet and unless you've learned flower language I dont think we can take Lady outta the equation."
He snorts "I may not know flowers, but I know my girlfriend. I can just be vague and she'll take it as a challenge and try to make the perfect bouquet. S'no problem on that front.
"I figured we could keep it a secret so we can see Bon's pure and raw reaction. Like I said, there hasn't been a suicide mission in a looooong while so she probably doesn't expect this. And it'll be way more funny cause someone commissioned you for it. Where it is no secret that a) you do this and b) you get help from the three of us."
"You got a point there detective. Bur fair warning, Bon will be giving us the stink eye for days if we do this. Especially me because she's my thesaurus and metaphor maker. You know how she loves taking credit for making them sound like a stupid romance novel."
"Psh, she loves you to hell and back. She'll just pout at you for a while and when you buy her her favourite candy it'll be right as rain."
Okay, that sounded valid but at the same time Marceline kind of shut down after Jake said Bon loves her so uh she guesses she'll just trust that it'll be fine?
" 'nother idea," Jake says softly. He's looking at he- actually. No he's not looking at her, hes just looking her way but his eyes are just. Not there.
"Uh, shoot"
"Make this song the best you've ever made."
Marceline laughs for a second before she realizes okay wait Jake is serious about that. What. Why the fuck would she do that.
He shrugs and smiles again. Soft and pitying -what why why is Jake acting like this what the fuck- and he gestures around a bit before speaking.
"Well, first off it'll be good practice for you. You've been workin with Bon for about as log as you've been doing this so think of this as a test to see how you are now on your own.
"Second, well ya gotta admit if you pull out a banger and Bon actually likes it it'll be way funnier cause you can sing it and she'll look all annoyed but you can see that her tapping her foot and bobbing her head. It'll be funny for everyone involved.
"And lastly," Jake takes a deep breath before speaking, as if this is one of the toughest things he's done in a while. "Call it a father's intuition."
She stares at him. She- she doesn't know hwo to react to that.
After a second, Jake cracks a soft smile and "Did you get Lady pregnant, you fucking askal" just slips out of her mouth.
Jake laughs loud and boisterous at this and Marce just follows.
Yeah, she might as well make this the best one she's ever made. The client won't get the girl, but at least she can make her like it
#chersonal#adventure time#at hc#bubbline#okay this got longer than i expected#i just spout this shit before i go to sleep so i dont usually know what the fuck im saying#yellow yelling

a life update
if you’re interested! :) i know im the nosy person who loves reading about peoples’ personal lives, so if that’s you.... below the cut sis, i see you lol
I have been sooo absent from tumblr for months now! And I know I don’t owe any explanations or anything, but idk, I just thought it’d be kinda fun to share with you guys what’s been keeping my mind busy and away! So here goes nothin’.
I had one hell of a summer. Emphasis on hell. Read: Family DRAMA. Which left me in a pretty rough place mentally/emotionally. In a much, much better place with it all now (altho as I say that my crazy aunt has been texting me all day tryna drag me bag into stuff lol no rest for the wicked y’all). But, when you’re feeling kinda down, it’s hard to find the energy to create.
I am starting up my web design side hustle!!! Which has been a long time coming lol. I’ve been meaning to do this for years, but things never quite lined up or worked out. Last year, I finally felt like I was at a good place to start, so I have! This is by far taking up the most space in my brain for now, as I’m still getting things off the ground. It’s hard to balance starting a business while working full time, and also trying to have other hobbies/interests/social interaction lolol. PS: If you or anyone you know needs a website designed.... ;) just sayin’. I know a gal.......... me. It’s me. I’m the gal. Moving on. :)
I’ve been revisiting my novel. Idk if I ever talked about it much on here or just vaguely referenced it here and there? But last Spring (yikes almost a year ago.. BIG YIKES) I started a novel with the goal to finish by 2020. I wrote about 3 chapters and effectively scrapped it. lmao. So here we are! Revisiting the drawing board. FYI, this novel is an adaptation of my “Disapora” story if any of yall remember that hot ass M E S S-- aka, how Eli and Clem meet, fall in love and what not. My concept is to take my Ivy characters and kind of build them out their own book series... a series that would explore generational ties and relationships, and give me space to REALLY develop these characters I’ve loved so much. Like, I could gush and geek over this forever, but developing the old Elliot and Clementine into REAL characters (let’s be honest, their development had always been a little... lite lol) feels amazing, and seeing the same character yet also they’re so different?? It’s hard to explain, but it’s exciting, and fun, and a big, long-term project/goal of mine, and 2020 is the year I write the first book!!!! Or at least start it lol.
I lost my very best furry friend, my cat Juno, in December. See above for mental hardship making it hard to create. However, Seth and I have opened our hearts and home to two little ragdoll brothers , who we’ve had for a few weeks now, and are in love with. I think Juno would’ve really loved them too. ❤️ They’re a lil bad sometimes lol I like to think they’re in the preteen phase right now, and acting up and being extra. But they’re so cute and sweet and quirky, and already apart of our little family.
Then there’s just tons of misc things that have sucked up my time. Like: learning how to use my iPad Pro + Apple Pencil, creating a digital bullet journal with said iPad/Pencil combo, researching going back to college for my MSW to then become an LCSW (good LORD the acronyms in the field... kill m e) and become a therapist, researching houses we cannot afford???? literally wasting entire days looking on Trulia/Zillow/etc. lol, trying out a super DUPER extreme elimination diet to pinpoint some of my health issues (which i suspect might be autoimmune by nature, as it runs in the fam, despite me not being diagnosed-- and there is a lot of at the bare minimum anecdotal evidence that AI diseases are caused by food intolerances), went through a weird regression where I played Zelda for a few days lmao, and I’ve also taken up a daily manifestation journaling practice! And lord knows what else. :)
All of this is to say.... YEAH I’ve been busy. But here I am. I can’t make any promises to myself or others are my content, how often I’ll post, if I’ll ever even finish this dang story, or what. But!! That’s all good. :) I’m gonna let myself have fun with this hobby. Because for ME, I need something I can just have fun with. Read all the above points for things in my life that aren’t meant to be taken very seriously and leave no room for ‘just have fun with it’ and you’ll get it lolol. At the end of the day tho, I love tumblr, for as much shit as we all talk about it. It scratches a very particular itch for me, and it’s an enjoyable itch to scratch (???? weird metaphor but ok). It’s fun. I love the community (I’m good at blocking the icky blogs, and love my mutuals/followers/anons/people who interact). And I love having Like Ivy in the back of my head, getting ideas and inkings for it here and there, with no pressure on myself to do anything with it, right away. I want to keep this as my creative, free for all kinda space. But that might mean some radio silence here and there. I feel like most my main followers are also adults tho with busy lives??? So I’m sure y’all more than understand the struggle lolol.
OH I almost forgot-- keep your 👀 peeled for the return of my Youtube channel this year! That was another fun hobby I enjoyed doing just for myself. I still need to figure out how I can make it work for me, in my new crazy life/schedule lol but alas!!!!! I’m a double scorpio and i LOVE a good challenge. Also might be a bit of a masochist??? So, I’ll figure it out, no worries lolol.
If you read this, and got all the way to the end without tapping out, I just wanted to say hey 👋 I see you. You’re awesome. I love you. Thanks for being interested in me. Also, we’re nosy creepers together, so we clearly have that in common 💁♀️ and idk! even if I’m not posting, I’m always lurking/around and always open to chat, answer asks, whatever. :) And if you have any questions about anything I wrote here, feel free to shoot them my way too!! All humans lowkey love talking about themselves (this post? case, and point oof). No shame~
Anyways-- thanks for reading!

OK, I’VE GOT AN IDEA
So, I normally have like a LOT of story ideas, so im just going to leave a little idea of what I have in mind.
Even if nobody cares, this is just so i can show my family that I DO have ideas!!
So, yeah:
The thing is that we are in a weird universe, where in some places we are still in the Middle Ages, and in another places we are already in Modern Age.
Maybe we are in between.
we are in a little village in the mountains, far from any city, and there’s a war (but far, so they think they will be fine)
spoiler, they are not fine. the war arrives and then all the young men between the ages of 15-49 are sent to the war, our hero is a female, so she doesn’t go, but maybe love interest does??? whaat???
So the characters I have right now are:
Claire Jenkins,15 yo (protagonist): Likes calculus and maths and solving problems with logic. That is not normal, bc women are supposed to be dumb??? Her father left when her sister was a few days old, said he had to do something, and never returned.
Henry Blake 15 yo(childhood best friend of Claire and possible love interest) prefers arts, like painting and writing poems. that's bad, bc men should be intelligent and they dont care about artistic intelligence bc yeah. Head over heels for Claire
Mrs. Blake, adores her little babies (Henry and his sibilings, they are 5 in total), likes how independent Claire is, is thinking about marrying his sons with nice girls from a city.
James Blake 16 yo (Henry’s older brother ), teases Henry about Claire doing his homework, likes teassing her too, jokes how she is their father’s favorite child. “Nah, he just likes having someone to talk about maths with, bc you r dumb”
Mr. Blake (the father) he’s an university teacher, he basically taught Claire all about calculus that she knows (which is a lot), but doesn’t show up a lot, bc of working in a big city away from the fam
Cristine Blake 23 ( older sister) a very nice young woman who is going to marry a very intelligent but kind of a jerk dude, everyone feels sorry for her, but she assures he is just shy and likes to have a shell of rudeness, this guy has a kind of friendship with James? Maybe.
Martha Blake (younger sister) 5yo girl who likes to read and sings like a little angel, she loves Claire, and she is going to make her life mission to make her brother marry her, she still doesn’t know what brother but... she will.
Charles “Charlie” Blake ( youngest brother) 2yo baby who is just a cutie.
Mrs. Jenkins (Claire’s mom) her family has got a bakery for generations, but probably will end up selling it for Claire’s little sister’s medicines. Loves Henry as her own, Claire jokes how her mother wants them to marry so she can legally call him her son.
Emily Jenkins 7 yo(Claire’s little sister) a literal sweetheart, has been sick for weeks, and now she can’t even leave the bed.
Caroline (a friend of the duo, new in the town) kind and smart, get called out a lot bc of it, does not give a fuck about it, calls people out on their incompetence and stupidity.
so Claire does Henry’s homework and he’s so glad he can focus in his art, and their families are very supportive of their respective hobbies, as long as they go well at school and help at home.
James is kind of a lazy jerk, so his mother would like him to find a girl like Claire, so, yeah, ship wars happen at that house.
Claire not liking marriage and saying she would never doblegate herself for a man to like her, her mother finds it unpleasant.
boys like to make fun of her just so she calls them out. Pretty popular with boys without knowing??
at class she is really quiet, teachers are pleased with her, bc w/ one word she can make all the boys shut up.
Swears a lot
like, yeah, she will never swear in front of an adult
but with her best friend??
please
she loves her village, but they need some feminism medicine for the men, so she packs her things up (including Herny), and leaves, she takes all her money with her and starts learning maths at the big city when the only female teacher of a school challenges her with an incredibly difficult problem that not even herself could have resolved it in less that a week
wich she resolves in, like an hour.
she gets an scholarship.
but also works in a bakery near the school so she can send the money to her mother and some cheaper medicines from the city
Henry starts working in a little art studio as the apprentice of a great artist, and learns from him
ends up being quite famous himself
attracts the attention of a ot of girls, but he refuses every one of their invitations for dates
war arrives
they run away together and try to get to their village before the war arrives.
they can’t make it, so the deserters take them away from there
but James was called for the war.
they and their new friends the deserters intercept the team of soldiers where James and other boys are and take them to the new base
James tells them that everyone is fine, but that Claire’s sister is worse everyday, and they forced her mother to close the bakery and the woman of the village now are practically slaves for the soldiers, cooking and cleaning for them, some were forced, and the children were taken away in a camp of refugees, where they should find everyone.
They find the refugees, but they can’t do a lot, and the children are quite fine, but the oldest boys are terrified, bc it will be their turn to go there soon.
the answer is clear
they make a trap and knock out every soldier from the camp and the village by putting some venom somnifers in their meal.
and they run away, taking their stuff.
Mr. Blake is back!!!
He comes with the army, looks like those weren’t the friendly army, but the enemies trying to set a trap on them!!
they catch them and free all the men, who have to accept they were released thanks to the women
the bakery is destroyed
the war isn’t over, but is really far, and going even farther, they are winning territory!
maybe a kiss between Claire and Henry?
there’s totally a kiss between them
but not all the endings are happy, and this one isn’t
Emily dies
Claire’s mom has to leave and find somewhere to stay in the city
she tells Claire to go with her, but she refuses
hugs and tears, a lot of people will do as Claire’s mother bc ther buisness are ruined/they lost their families and have some relatives far away from there
the Blakes lost someone too
their son in law
Cristine is heart broken and tries to kill herself
she cant, the doctors say they are lucky the baby was alright
BABY??
looks like she is pregnant, so she gets over her husband’s death slowly and painfully, but with a lot of help she finds herself with a beautiful baby in her arms
“Welcome to the world,Harry, it’s a wonderful place, dangerous too. But don’t worry, we all will take care of you”
the Clair-Henry weddding like five years later!!
James finds himself being the bestman, and ‘has Caroline always been so freaking adorable?’
yes, yes she has, you idiot
Mr. Blake walks Claire to Henry and whispers to her ear ‘Good luck, daughter’
a lot of cries
now im sentimental too
it gets to the newspapers, “Great artist and famoust matmatician, getting married at the village they saved five years ago, congratulatios to the couple!”
maybe Claire becoming the new teacher at the village??
my babies just got married, ok??
they grow so fast...
That’s it, if you got ‘til here thank you so much!! I just need a title and i will officially write this as my first novel!!
Feel free to reblog, but don’t repost.
If you like it, I will probably do this with the next story idea I have!!
#oc#originalstory#dont repost#please#original writing#maybe in the future this will be a real novel#or not#probably not#first time actually trying to write a novel#original story#story

July 4th-July 10th, 2020 Creator Babble Archive
The archive for the Creator Babble chat that occurred from July 4th, 2020 to July 10th, 2020. The chat focused on the following question:
What was an unexpected aspect of making webcomics you didn’t realize before making one yourself?
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
How much our comic and it's story we're going to change during the years of creation was the biggest and most jarring aspect for sure. There's scripts and thumbs that were all made before we ventured out to make GJS with paths completely different from what we initially thought we would take that have completely changed how we approach not only writing but reading webcomics too. Webcomics as a medium have the biggest connection to time, whether it be production or the consumption, they have this opportunity to exist and transform in the long hours it takes to enjoy and read them. It's honestly one of the biggest advantages imho. To see a story slowly unfold, listening to ur audience reactions, peer critiques, or new inspiration can make such a drastic and intense impact on a long form work- its both jaw dropping and humbling to be apart of!(edited)
Deo101 [Millennium]
For me it was the community aspect of comics. I knew a community existed on the reader side of things (comments!), but I didn't expect the creator side to be how it is! I don't know why, but for some reason I kind of always thought that all of us were sort of throwing our comics out from the void... I guess that was me looking at comics from a reader's point of view! But as soon as I started making comics, I started meeting people who made them too... and it's been incredible!
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
@deo I never really understood what an internet community or internet friends were until I started making a webcomic
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah, I had been in (and quickly decided to not be in 0_0) gaming communities, but nothing really as wonderful as what I've found through comics. Closest I had gotten other than that was comments on social media
Shizamura 🌟 O Sarilho
Community definitely one of the big things, much like Deo pointed. I was kinda expecting to have get connections through readers, but it's much more with other creators, which is super satisfying in it's own way. Also gonna second Krispy's comment about how time affects how you see your story's past and future. A lot of things changed in the past four years that made my comic change as well and having so much time to think each individual scene allows them to be much more complex and interesting than they would when I first thought them through. Having the time really helps. This also kinda touches the topic of personal change too, which affects how I write and what feels most important to focus on and that's interesting to think about as well
eliushi [Keyspace]
How long things will take, the longer the story goes on! I started out being able to complete a page in 2h but then I found more I wanted to try on each page (colours, layout, composition etc) and even wanted to extend certain scenes. With 500 pages planned, I definitely thought I’d be farther along by now, heading into AWT’s first year anniversary in a month. That being said, I’m also enjoying the ride and it’s all thanks to the great community here and making connections with other comics folks/readers. I never expected to get comments and so each one has been a treasure to read.
Desnik
An unexpected aspect of making webcomics is how much people respond to them. I figured I'd be creating into a void but I met so many people as a result of publishing my dinosaur comic
shadowhood {SunnyxRain}
Ditto on the webcomic community. I didn't realize how far reaching it was to have a community that supports each other. And I've enjoyed meeting so many wonderful and creative people who raised each other up. Another thing I didn't expect, however, was how invested I got into my comic.(edited)
At first I was doing it mostly for fun. But the more I delved into it, the easier it was to get sucked into my story and want to draw it out. And as a result taking it a lot more seriously.
Desnik
yeah sometimes I miss my dinosaur comic even though I had some pretty good reasons for moving on. It was created out of desperation and evolved into something that made me feel good about myself
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
How much work and time it takes to keep a weekly update going with no backlog
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yeah same
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
For me, I didn't realize how much it would affect my life to make comics, and vice versa. In a weird way, I didn't know how interrelated the two were, or how easily life could interfere with my comic, or the inverse.
eliushi [Keyspace]
Making comics became a lifestyle for me
@Haruh2 (Colony Life) When I had no backlog I was updating every two weeks with 7 pages per update; so about 14h of work. But this is with a finished script. I am also told I work fast.
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
omg
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
That's soooo much, Eli!
That's at least twice as much as I do (edited)
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
For me, I didn't realize how much it would affect my life to make comics, and vice versa. In a weird way, I didn't know how interrelated the two were, or how easily life could interfere with my comic, or the inverse.
I hadn't realized how much I put myself into my comic! My friends who read it have all said that it's incredibly in my voice and reflects my opinions and worldviews Before I shared it with people I hadn't thought of it in that way at all
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
As an artist, I didn't expect how my comic production and mindset will change. Once I started comics, it brought out my ideas from thoughts to a physical form. I start to invest more time into it. Each project evolved through each chapter. How to balance script writing to a polished piece. I put alot of time and research in my works. It makes me glad to hear other creators do the same. I'm not the crazy artist who's wasting her time. One of the positive change was meeting other creators, how we give advice and receive praise.(edited)
eliushi [Keyspace]
The support has been amazing. It makes the work less lonely
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Fish, oh for sure! I didn't realize until recently how much my characters are all just facets of myself!
eliushi [Keyspace]
(I don’t work that quickly anymore and I’m making big changes to the format soon so it’s going to be a Transition)
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
I've been in school with art students who never made comics, so when I came to CTP discord, reading comic discussions. It was comforting and fun. I enjoy the cooperation our group has, helping each other.
eliushi [Keyspace]
I like to commiserate about the unique challenges comics have
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Hahaha, yeahhhhh
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
I agree, it's different from illustrations. Different approach(edited)
eliushi [Keyspace]
I am perpetually balancing time spent on a panel vs how much time the reader will spend on it
Vs illustration: lemme make all the details
Joichi [Hybrid Dolls]
Oh I agree, each panel takes longer than it takes to read it. Hence I dislike when readers call manga creators 'lazy'
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
how much time does it take to read one of my pages?
20 seconds?(edited)
haha
e.e
wait is that emoji supposed to be someone rolling their eyes??
i jsut looked it up
i might've been using it wrong this whole time
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Pacing
It's way different than in novels, and definitely came as a shock at the start
eliushi [Keyspace]
Yeah have to play to the strength of the medium. Still imagining AWT as an animated movie written from a novel, in the format of a comic
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Haha, same kinda
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
@eliushi [Keyspace] ah haha, that makes me feel better about my update habits, but thats a good goal for me to shoot for now that im learning a new way to make long comics specifically
cAPSLOCK (Tailslide)
I completely underestimated the amount of effort that would have to go into formatting, website design and maintenance, etc. If I got to do it again, a little more research beforehand probably would’ve saved me a lot of time and hassle.
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
I really overestimated the "if you build it they will come" aspect of webcomics lol. Like, you actually have to work to advertise your comic in order for people to read it. Nobody ever got hundreds of readers just from posting their comic onto some hosting site without doing major marketing work.(edited)
dako
yeah, I feel that
I've never really been an advertising type before my comic, im learning to just get used to it
Deo101 [Millennium]
I've not really done much advertising tbh, it makes me uncomfortable
dako
it feels kinda...embarrassing? might be too harsh of a word
i dunno
Deo101 [Millennium]
its just uncomfortable idk! i feel awkward doing it
dako
yeah, same ive done it a few times on reddit but i have to force myself
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
it does feel, odd..hell most of the time it just feels like i open the door to my house and toss a bunch of paper to the wind hoping someone can see it
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah, I dont know if ive done anything other than posting updates on twitter and talking about it in groups like this
and twitter is mostly just me talkin to people who already read it...
idk talking about my work without being asked first makes me feel like im inserting myself where im not allowed
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Self promo got MUCH less intimidating for me when I started thinking of it like: "okay, so my comic is made for readers like me, people who share my tastes. That means I only need to answer one question: what can I say to get me to check out this comic? I don't need to impress anyone else. I just need to appeal to me." (since "me" is my target audience)
Deo101 [Millennium]
mhm ^^
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
But take it with a grain of salt because I'm still not really promoing
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
exactly, thats why i find it hard to tweet about it most of the time, but i get the whole if i dont care about to talk without being asked no one else will either
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah lmao mood im like what would get me to read... hmmm... probably exactly what im doing.... I'll keep it up then :)
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
yea i get excited to draw out certain parts..but wouldnt want to just tweet about all the little tidbits of the story ruining it for others
Deo101 [Millennium]
sweats
dako
i made a whole side twitter for my comic cuz talking about it on my main intimidated me too much
it is my containment chamber
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
hm may do that, just to say i did it and to get my mind away from the thought
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
yeah same
Deo101 [Millennium]
My main is just whatever I want it to be idk. Its kinda for all my comics, since my comics are all I want to talk about
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
though my main is mostly just retweeting from my side twitter lol
Deo101 [Millennium]
it removes a lot of the pressure of like what if my followers dont wanna see this??
cause they wouldnt be here if they didnt wanna see it
cause its all Ive been doing the whole time
dako
thats a good point
i had my main way before my comic so most of my mutuals/followers dont follow for that
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
yea, it can feel abit disorienting when there is no interaction one way or another on anything you tweet (also if twitter has messed up and causes your tweets to not show up)
Deo101 [Millennium]
but yeah I dont really advertise cause it just makes me so uncomfortable >.<
dako
understandable
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I'm kind of somewhere in between. I advertise my comic mostly because it is all I wanna talk about, like Deo. But I also don't think it's gotten me many readers. Most of my readers came as far as I can tell because I was making something that appealed to them. (The whole "if you build it, they will come" thing.) Although, I really don't have a big audience, I do have an audience, and I am certain most of them came from me just posting.
I think it's determined a lot by luck, and also, how big your niche's audience is to begin with (and some skill tbh).
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah like I think "gay sci fi" is a p big niche so ive got a big amount of people I could potentially reach
which makes it much easier to draw people in
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I'm particularly lucky, I guess, that fantasy/romance has a lot of readers (also more competition, but...)
Deo101 [Millennium]
yeah fantasy romance is a damn big one
Haruh2 (Colony Life)
eh i think im in an awkward void with my action/drama story (since im not doing romance drama)
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I just go with the mindset: "what makes my fantasy/romance different from the rest" and go from there.
Deo101 [Millennium]
mhm
tbh I dont think my sci fi romance is doing anything special?
but im having fun so :) I dont rlly care about that hahahha
dako
having fun the most important thing
Deo101 [Millennium]
its not my goal to make somthing mindblowing ^^ truley im just here for a good time
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I mean, LGBT+-inclusive sci-fi is pretty unique
I haven't seen a lot
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
It's clear that your characters are people, and that's special, regardless of how common/uncommon
dako
think if i didnt love my comic as much as i do id have stopped a long time ago
Deo101 [Millennium]
thats true keiiii, thank you <3
also yeah its Sad that theres not more LGBT+ sci fi cause its like youve got aliennnssssssssssssssssssss you can do whatever you waaaaaant
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I knooowww
Deo101 [Millennium]
guess it shows what ppl want or something
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
yup
Deo101 [Millennium]
off topic
so to make it back on topic
I underestimated how much people would like gay sci fi GJKLAGJLAJLKAGJSLAKGJKL
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
One thing I learned specifically with my current comic... I did not realize how much difference the reader's cultural background would make in terms of interpreting my story.
Deo101 [Millennium]
!!!!!
I actually almost mentioned you in class once tbh keiii
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Big oversight, in retrospect
!?
Deo101 [Millennium]
saying "someone I know makes a comic which they noticed, it's interpreted completely differently just depending on cultural backgrounds" kind of a thing
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
like I would not have made the comic any different, but I would have approached the... presentation differently. Like, talk about it differently
Deo101 [Millennium]
cause we were talking about how narratives affect rt
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
I guess another thing that was unexpected about making webcomics was... there are way more people with my exact tastes than I thought
Deo101 [Millennium]
and I was saying that I think the viewer's narrative affects art more than the artists narrative
I mean, the artists narrative obviously is what makes it so.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
In the eyes of the beholder
Deo101 [Millennium]
but interpretations and all that... yeah!!!
so. actually I might have offhandedly mentioned you I cant remember if I did or not
lemme check
I did! very like "second hand" offhandedly mentioning though ahaha
hope that doesnt make you uncomfortable GSKLGSJALGJLGK no one replied to me so e.e
in the class I mean
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I am super uncomfortable and offended !!!!!
j/k
Deo101 [Millennium]
hgjkghsjkagskajgdhsakgjhgjd
but... yeah idk starting out I truly just was making it cause I really love my characters a lot, the idea that other people would like them too is very unexpected :) in a good way
I also definitely didnt expect how important enviornments were e.e
didnt plan those well enough.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
that relatable feel
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
I really desperately advertise my comic everywhere. I don't really know how to do marketing effectively though & I don't know if its working
eliushi [Keyspace]
I find what increased readership most consistently is still the feature aspect from the hosting sites. It’s really about finding the right readers/right readers finding you
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Same, I'm basically a rounding error away from being 100% reliant on the features for subs
sssfrs (JOE IS DEAD)
I don't think my comic has ever been featured on the hosting sites. My numbers have always been low on Tapas and maybe thast why
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Yeah, features help a lot
I've been featured on Webtoon, but not Tapas, and you can really see the difference in readership there
Deo101 [Millennium]
Ive been featured on both, uhh in a couple of diff places, if you wanted a breakdown of how many readers i got from the diff spots and stuff ever just lmk im happy to share
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I've been featured on both. It certainly got people to check it out and even sub, but retaining those people (even if they've subbed!!!) is a different story. I think my story is just not the right type for the platforms, but eh, even if 99% of the platform users aren't into the kinda thing I'm making, 1% increase is still an increase.
Which is another thing I learned over the course of running this comic, specifically (since the internet has changed so much after my first two attempts). Just because the majority of your subs don't actually read the comic, doesn't mean your work sucks. Today's internet caters to casual users, and there's a bajillion factors affecting who's actually reading your stuff.
dako
i agree
my comic has never been featured on either, and webtoons doesnt have a guideline on what they pick but tapas does and my comic doesnt really meet their featuring requirements so i dont think either site ever will feature mine haha
so i gotta advertise on reddit and use twitter tags a lot
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Don't go too crazy with twitter tags; they can make people zone out and not look at your tweet.
dako
i try to use 5 at the most, i know too many is unpleasant to look at haha
Jib {WIP haha}
Oh huh, my rule of thumb is to use 1-2 on twitter and as many as I can on Insta but I’m no expert lol
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Yeah, IG seems to be where you want all the tags XD
varethane
Webtoon's algorithms are like turning a hose on and off lol
The difference between views and sub growth during periods of being featured vs not is stark(edited)
carcarchu
i've never been featured by webtoons but i've seen series grow from 100 followers to 10k overnight
not an exaggeration
varethane
I put my new comic on webtoon in november 2019, and in 1 month I crawled up to.... maybe 50 subs?(granted I only put up one episode and then paused for a bit)
Then in December I started updating it weekly and got placed in the new and hot section of the app
And bam, 6k subs
It last 2 weeks and then the section updated and all growth stopped, and subs went down by 10 or so over the next week
Krispy §[Ghost Junk Sickness]§
(Omg featured is like the new Daily Deviation goals from DA way back in the day!)
varethane
Until it got another feature on a different part of the website and went up another 2k. It was like playing with the handle on a faucet lol
dako
I got some pretty good growth during canvas week, but beyond that not really
I get 1-2 subs after an update if I'm lucky
varethane
I feel like their algorithms are very reliant on the regular rotation of features that staff have to do manuallt
Outside of that, discoverability is quite weak
Mostly because of the volume of comics on there
boogeymadam
same boat as vare. the only thing i know about webtoons features is they have stated a couple times one of their recquirements is consistant updating, so if u skip a week that disqualifies u for a lil while i imagine
varethane
I wonder what they count as consistent. I was doing every 2 weeks for awhile, but this month I'm gonna try weekly to see if it helps me earn more $$ from ads :U
dako
I wish there was more incentive for readers to check out the new section on webtoons and tapas
carcarchu
i have found some amazing gems in the new section
i swear i've seen stuff in featured that were not at all updated consistently
dako
I have too, there's a ton of good comics that get overlooked because they're not in the front page
some featured comics havent updated in months sometimes
varethane
I definitely would not have considered myself consistent at the time of the first feature, considering there was a gap of a month between episode 1 and 2 lpl
carcarchu
the consistently updating thing is more of a recommendation than a requirement i feel?(edited)
boogeymadam
ooohh good to know!!
varethane
I'm sure it cant be a hard rule, especially for comics that have just launched
boogeymadam
im just going off their canvas qna's from last year
dako
if it's actually a hard rule for staff to feature comics that regularly update they break that rule a lot
i also heard a bot picks up comics too
carcarchu
well i at least think the staff or bots or whatever at webtoons are doing a better job with features than tapas is
tapas is always pushing their premium comics way more than their indie stuff
boogeymadam
tapas needs to bring new comics onto the frontpage more often than it does, yeah
dako
yeah I agree
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I mean, I get why they put premium on the front page. But I feel more variety would help them because it's more interesting for the readers?
dako
I can't tell whats premium or not with tapas sometimes
boogeymadam
i do like that they've been asking stuff like this in the forums tho
carcarchu
more distinction would be helpful to me too dako
i don't think its as clear as it could be
dako
yeah, webtoons at least it's clear what is and what isnt featured or canvas
Jib {WIP haha}
Huh, anyone remember that really popular writing podcast? I forgot the name
Or have any recommendations I guess
Moral_Gutpunch
Terrible writing advice? It's sarcastic
snuffysam (Super Galaxy Knights)
is this related to the topic?
Moral_Gutpunch
It's a podcast about writing, so I'm going to say yes.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
I think snuffysam meant the weekly topic for the channel
Moral_Gutpunch
Oh
Just for this channel, no. I'm too new to know that.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Please check #rules
Moral_Gutpunch
Sound more like someone forgot context than the rules
That's why I'm hardly here. I don't know stuff people who've been here for a long time know like podcasts or older comics(edited)
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Basically each of the channels under "CTP Activities" on this server has its own topic of the week.
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
It's not a matter of being here for a long time or not. This channel is used solely for discussing the weekly topics, and such information can be found in #rules
Moral_Gutpunch
Kudos then. I came for creator babble only.
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
For general webcomic creation-related advice (either seeking or giving) and such, #shop_talk usually is the place!
creator_babble is for answering the topic of the week
It's not actually for generalized "creator babble" despite the name.
dako
looks like they left
Jib {WIP haha}
Oh my bad, it’s been a while since I read the rules, I brought up the new subject
keii’ii (Heart of Keol)
Happens!
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
No problem, we were just reminding you all :)
Jib {WIP haha}
Ty for that then haha
dako
I think one unexpected thing for me is that no one tells you how crazy the highs and lows can be
well I guess people do but you really don't know until the highs and lows happen to you if that makes sense
Cronaj ~{Whispers of the Past}~
Oh God, that's so true
Burnout is way more dreadful than I could ever guess prior to experiencing it
Feather J. Fern
One unexpected thing for me was how many people I would meet because of my comic. It surprised me greatly that I found so many cool people through the comic community and made the friends I have made now. Love you all
rajmews
The unexpected thing for me was just how much you have to just...predict...what the market will want to read. Like even if you research a whole lot, and you draw really well, and have been doing art professionally, you can still strike out. It's a humbling experience, but being able to just let go of poorly received pages and move on and try things differently is a lot of the battle for doing a webcomic. It teaches you how to fail gracefully because...it's all a process of learning your readers better. Even if they're few at first.
LadyLazuli (Phantomarine)
My major unexpected thing was how much my initial ideas change as I work through a page. Everything from the expressions, dialogue, and layout can change as I look at it and 'solve' it more closely than I did in thumbnails. There are pages I look back on and realize they are ENTIRELY different than what I had first sketched. And they're better for it. Allowing myself the freedom to edit during the artwork... it's created some majorly awesome opportunities.
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yes!!!!! Me too!!!
It's exciting thoufh
Eightfish (Puppeteer)
Absolutely same
Could plan something out meticulously but then change it in the last 2 secs before uploading
Deo101 [Millennium]
Yup... I don't thumbnail much ahead of where I'm at cause of this(edited)
I thumbnail a scene at a time, and then usually I end up changing stuff halfway through ahahfjjdkskdkss
varethane
Same hat, haha. I often make changes at every stage-- even the thumbnails will often depart from the script. If anything, I wish I made even more changes-- I feel like my page layouts tend to be pretty standard, I do a lot of pages with the 3 rows of 2 panels each, and I want to break out of that more. But... well, that's a work in progress.

THE HATING GAME BY SALLY THORNE
Page Count: 387 pages Publisher: William Morrow Release Date: August 9th, 2016 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Lucy Hutton has always been certain that the nice girl can get the corner office. She’s charming and accommodating and prides herself on being loved by everyone at Bexley & Gamin. Everyone except for coldly efficient, impeccably attired, physically intimidating Joshua Templeman. And the feeling is mutual. Trapped in a shared office together 40 (OK, 50 or 60) hours a week, they’ve become entrenched in an addictive, ridiculous never-ending game of one-upmanship. There’s the Staring Game. The Mirror Game. The HR Game. Lucy can’t let Joshua beat her at anything—especially when a huge new promotion goes up for the taking. If Lucy wins this game, she’ll be Joshua’s boss. If she loses, she’ll resign. So why is she suddenly having steamy dreams about Joshua, and dressing for work like she’s got a hot date? After a perfectly innocent elevator ride ends with an earth-shattering kiss, Lucy starts to wonder whether she’s got Joshua Templeman all wrong. Maybe Lucy Hutton doesn’t hate Joshua Templeman. And maybe, he doesn’t hate her either. Or maybe this is just another game.”
This book is what finally pushed me into reading adult romances. Yeah, I had read a couple before this one, but this is the book that made me fall in love with the genre. I know it’s been talked about by most everyone, but if you haven’t read it yet, this summer is the perfect time (especially with the movie in the works)!
THE KISS QUOTIENT (THE KISS QUOTIENT #1) BY HELEN HOANG
Page Count: 333 pages Publisher: Berkley Release Date: June 5th, 2018 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases — a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old. It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice — with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer, and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan — from foreplay to more-than-missionary position… Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses, but to crave all the other things he’s making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic… ”
Firstly, if you aren’t a fan of series, don’t worry. This is just a series of companion novels, so you don’t have to commit to them. But trust me when I say, after reading this, you will want to. I just love this book so much. These characters are just absolutely amazing and you will not regret picking this up!
JOSH AND HAZEL’S GUIDE TO NOT DATING BY CHRISTINA LAUREN
Page Count: 309 pages Publisher: Gallery Books Release Date: September 4th, 2018 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Hazel Camille Bradford knows she’s a lot to take—and frankly, most men aren’t up to the challenge. If her army of pets and thrill for the absurd don’t send them running, her lack of filter means she’ll say exactly the wrong thing in a delicate moment. Their loss. She’s a good soul in search of honest fun. Josh Im has known Hazel since college, where her zany playfulness proved completely incompatible with his mellow restraint. From the first night they met—when she gracelessly threw up on his shoes—to when she sent him an unintelligible email while in a post-surgical haze, Josh has always thought of Hazel more as a spectacle than a peer. But now, ten years later, after a cheating girlfriend has turned his life upside down, going out with Hazel is a breath of fresh air. Not that Josh and Hazel date. At least, not each other. Because setting each other up on progressively terrible double blind dates means there’s nothing between them…right?”
I have two Christina Lauren books on this list because I am addicted to their books. However, this one is by far my favorite of theirs. It’s a friends-to-lovers done so well, you won’t be able to put it down. I know I wasn’t able to.
RED, WHITE, AND ROYAL BLUE BY CASEY MCQUISTON
Page Count: 423 pages Publisher: St. Martin’s Griffin Release Date: May 14th, 2019 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“First Son Alex Claremont-Diaz is the closest thing to a prince this side of the Atlantic. With his intrepid sister and the Veep’s genius granddaughter, they’re the White House Trio, a beautiful millennial marketing strategy for his mother, President Ellen Claremont. International socialite duties do have downsides—namely, when photos of a confrontation with his longtime nemesis Prince Henry at a royal wedding leak to the tabloids and threaten American/British relations.
The plan for damage control: staging a fake friendship between the First Son and the Prince. Alex is busy enough handling his mother’s bloodthirsty opponents and his own political ambitions without an uptight royal slowing him down. But beneath Henry’s Prince Charming veneer, there’s a soft-hearted eccentric with a dry sense of humor and more than one ghost haunting him.
As President Claremont kicks off her reelection bid, Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret relationship with Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations. And Henry throws everything into question for Alex, an impulsive, charming guy who thought he knew everything: What is worth the sacrifice? How do you do all the good you can do? And, most importantly, how will history remember you?”
You all knew I would have to put this book on here. It’s my obsession. The love of my life. I know this book is getting a lot of hype right now, but let me tell you, it deserves all of it. This book is really something special. Not only is it an adorable romance with enemies-to-lovers and plenty of wit, but it’s also a powerful read that you don’t want to miss.
THE UNHONEYMOONERS BY CHRISTINA LAUREN
Page Count: 400 Publisher: May 14th, 2019 Release Date: Gallery Books Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Full Review ]
“Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man. Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs. Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky.”
While Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating may be my favorite Christina Lauren book, this one is pretty close. Enemies-to-lovers, fake datings, and basically every other classic trope everyone loves found their way into this extremely fun read.
WELL MET BY JEN DELUCA
Page Count: 336 Publisher: Berkley Release Date: September 3rd, 2019 Purchase Options: Amazon, Indiebound, Barnes and Noble [ Click Here For My Review Teaser ]
“Emily knew there would be strings attached when she relocated to the small town of Willow Creek, Maryland, for the summer to help her sister recover from an accident, but who could anticipate getting roped into volunteering for the local Renaissance Faire alongside her teenaged niece? Or that the irritating and inscrutable schoolteacher in charge of the volunteers would be so annoying that she finds it impossible to stop thinking about him? The faire is Simon’s family legacy and from the start he makes clear he doesn’t have time for Emily’s lighthearted approach to life, her oddball Shakespeare conspiracy theories, or her endless suggestions for new acts to shake things up. Yet on the faire grounds he becomes a different person, flirting freely with Emily when she’s in her revealing wench’s costume. But is this attraction real, or just part of the characters they’re portraying? This summer was only ever supposed to be a pit stop on the way to somewhere else for Emily, but soon she can’t seem to shake the fantasy of establishing something more with Simon, or a permanent home of her own in Willow Creek.”
Okay, I know this one won’t be published until summer is over, but I need to mention it. It’s absolutely amazing! Seriously, it’s completely worth the wait. The relationship is so perfect, the characters are all amazing, and it takes place at a Ren Faire!!! What more could you ask for?

Growing Up
Rating: G Pairing: Background terumob Summary: Shigeo decides to branch out a little. Crossposted to AO3: Growing Up
Here's my second stab at @bisexualwinry‘s fluff prompts!
On an unrelated note, I've been looking for fellow mp100 writers here with the potential of creating a writer's discord! Specifically I've been looking in the mp100 fandom since that's the one I'm most active in rn but it's open to all fandom writers. I haven't created it yet bc I haven't seen enough interest but I feel like it could be a really fun place for writers to get together, find beta readers, workshop ideas, etc! If you're interested, hmu here on tumblr or my discord (LyssaGirl1998). You can send me an ask or an im, whatever you prefer!
“Master Reigen,” Shigeo says one day from his spot on the couch in Reigen’s office, “I think I’d like to learn to play piano.”
Reigen looks up from where he’s tapping away at his keyboard. It’s still odd to hear Shigeo call him that, after he’d admitted to being a fraud, but despite his insistence that he doesn’t need to anymore, he still does anyway. Shigeo reclines against the couch, one leg lifted so that his ankle rested atop his opposite knee. He has a book open in his lap, which he’s been quietly reading up until now.
“Piano?” The voice of Reigen’s unwanted and self-imposed secretary butts into the conversation before Reigen can reply. Tome leans forward in her seat, the seat that used to be Shigeo’s, before he’d stopped coming around as frequently. “What would you want to learn something like that for?”
Shigeo shrugs with a small smile, slipping a bookmark between the pages of his novel and setting it aside for now. The smiles are less rare now, more generously offered and less stifled and withheld. “It was thinking that it could be fun to learn how to play an instrument,” he explains. “I don’t have a lot of hobbies, after all.”
Reigen’s more than a little surprised that piano is the thing that Shigeo has decided to pursue. He’s never seemed like much of the musical type, aside from whatever music he liked to listen to in his free time, and he’d only ever taken interest in a few random activities, like exercising. But he’s in his third year of middle school now, and he’d finally started letting go of the tight hold he’d kept on his emotions for all those years, so it’s only natural for him to want to explore those hidden and repressed sides of himself now. Besides, Reigen finds the idea of careful Shigeo sitting at a piano quite easy to imagine, once he puts his mind to it. “Hmm, I think it would suit you,” he comments. “Why piano, though? Any particular reason?”
“Well, Teru knows how to play, and he’s even offered to teach me a few times,” Shigeo replies, his smile turning a bit more shy and fond with the mention of his boyfriend. “He’s really talented, and I bet he’s a good teacher.”
At her desk, Tome makes choking noises and pretends to be sick.
Reigen ignores her entirely. “I think it’s a good idea,” he says. Shigeo deserves encouragement and support, and if he wants to try something new, Reigen firmly believes that he should.
Shigeo, at least, seems pleased with the answer, nodding with a confidence Reigen still isn’t quite used to seeing before returning quietly to his book. Reigen lets himself stare a moment longer, noting that Shigeo’s gotten taller. It won’t be long before he shoots over Reigen’s head and starts rivaling Serizawa.
He huffs out a breath that ends up sounding annoyed, turning back to his work. These stupid kids, they really do grow up way too fast.
---
Teru and Shigeo meet after their club activities often to study and, occasionally, to have a brief piano lesson. Teru can’t fit a keyboard in his little apartment, so he comes to Salt Mid instead, and the two of them take up residence in one of the school’s open practice rooms in the music wing.
Shigeo’s fingers are inexperienced and uncertain, and he’s quick to doubt the soft way he presses the keys, so different from Teru’s quick and confident playing. He’s stubbornly dedicated to learning, though, and his ear is incredibly sharp. He picks out his mistakes quickly after he makes them, fingers jerking into the correct positions with little need for Teru to correct them for him. Teru’s quick to praise him for his progress and gentle when he points out his missteps, and they quickly fall into a routine in their lessons of sitting on the bench together, close enough to brush shoulders, Teru leaning over to mess with the music while Shigeo does scales and arpeggios and sight reads the kind of music meant for three-year-olds and pretends not to notice how the proximity makes his chest warm comfortably.
---
Ritsu hears Shigeo practice, sometimes, when their mother goes to run errands, their father isn’t quite home from work yet, and it’s just the two of them in the house. Usually it’s when Ritsu is up in his room, working on his homework. He’ll catch the faint, distant sound of piano melodies as Shigeo plays whatever comes to mind: random little tunes that Teru’s taught him, old folk songs and nursery rhymes, and occasionally something of his own creation.
The tunes start out rough and shaky, large breaks between bits of the music Shigeo hasn’t quite committed to memory yet. Ritsu wonders how he can see so little progress and yet still not find himself frustrated. He shakes his head and goes back to his homework, drowning out the quiet plinks of the piano beneath him with headphones and his own music.
---
Shigeo graduates middle school.
Reigen gets invited to come sit with his family for the ceremony, and Teru does as well. They find a seat off to the side, easy to spot but not too overbearing. The ceremony is widely unnecessary, in Reigen’s opinion, and drags on for far longer than he believes it should, but that doesn’t stop the rush of unprecedented pride he feels when he hears the principal call Shigeo’s name.
He watches, speechless, as the boy he’s known for the last five years of his life crosses the stage, and hides the fact that he’s on the verge of tears by pretending he’s sleepy and rubbing his eyes. Ritsu shoots him a look that says he sees right through Reigen’s bullshitting, but not even Shigeo’s snarky younger brother can steal his good mood away from him when he eagerly goes to congratulate his student after the ceremony has concluded.
Shigeo’s parents shell out to buy him a nice graduation gift: an electronic keyboard of his own, one that he can easily put up in his bedroom and take with him when he eventually goes off to college. It’s full-sized, with the nice weighted keys that feel like a real piano’s, but compact enough that he doesn’t need to worry about how much space it takes up. Reigen pitches in to help pay for the accessories as his own congratulations, and it’s beyond satisfying to see the way Shigeo’s eyes light up at the sight of the crisp, new black-and-white instrument already set up and waiting for him when they all go back to the Kageyama house to celebrate.
---
Shigeo keeps practicing. He gets better every time Ritsu hears him, his pacing more consistent, repertoire more confident. It makes him happy that Shigeo has found something he likes, that he’s willing to practice and get better at. He hopes he sticks with it.
---
Shigeo grows older, taller. His daily exercises with the Body Improvement Club show in the lean muscles he hides beneath the sleeves of the better-fitting high school uniform. His shoulders broaden and his face loses its childishness in favor of more mature, angular features, but it retains its softness in the laugh lines around his eyes and the toothy smile he no longer hesitates to show.
Larger hands and longer fingers make playing the piano that much easier, after the initial adjustment he has to make to account for his newfound clumsiness. He runs into things constantly now, banging his feet on chairs and tables that he swears are too far away to be problematic and hitting his head on low-hanging objects and shelves he used to be able to walk right under. He forgets sometimes that he can reach the high shelves now, the ones even Reigen can’t get to unless he uses the little step stool by the pantry.
He joins a music club at his new high school and uses it as his designated practice time, putting his hours into the well-worn pianos in the music room while the other club members hone their own talents all around him. It’s been months since he first touched a piano, and he’s grown confident and deft in the way he moves his fingers over the keys. He can sight read now, at least certain things. He plays whatever he feels like playing, not confined to classes or grades or any sort of classical training. He picks out song with tunes he thinks sound pretty or interesting and then he recreates them, with or without music, content to play on a whim instead of by necessity.
He never becomes so good at the piano that he’s asked to perform outside of occasional pieces he plays for his friends or classmates at his music club. He learns a few duets, with Teru or with friends who play other instruments, but he doesn’t perform in front of large crowds or even attempt to.He’s perfectly content to play for himself, and only himself.
---
Shigeo loves playing the piano. When he feels stressed, it’s an easy way for him to relieve some dormant energy and express those feelings in a productive way. He plays happy things when he’s feeling sad, somber things when he’s feeling contemplative, whatever comes to mind in the moment. He plays easy things and complex things, whatever sounds pleasing to the ear, and challenges himself by picking up pieces that he thinks may be a bit beyond his skill level. He surprises himself by putting in the time and effort into making what seemed impossible his new glass ceiling, and shatters it with every day he pushes himself out of his comfort zone.
Sometimes he plays out loud, for anyone to hear, and other times he plugs in a pair of headphones and plays just for himself. He plays as a break between homework assignments, putting his brain to work in a completely different way, plays when he’s feeling bored and has nothing else to do.
Sometimes he doesn’t play at all, too wrapped up in the business of his schedule as he balances occasional work for Reigen with hanging out with Teru and his brother and all of their friends. He never goes too long without playing, though, his attention inevitably going back to the keyboard set up by the window in his room, where he can glance outside at the neighbors walking their dogs down the street while his fingers drum against the plastic keys. It’s peaceful, and takes his mind off his other concerns.
---
When he finally leaves his parents’ house, he takes the keyboard with him.

in all my years on tumblr, this is still one of my favorite gifs of tay in existence, so i shall use it now on my mega ooc appreciation post.
i am still on hiatus — it has been a ROUGH 36 hours my dudes — but i did want to drop in and post some ic/ooc appreciation things while this week is still here because i am all in the business of sharing the love. it’s one of the many reasons i absolutely adore this group. this group has always been about love, for me, and would probably be the singular word i’d use to describe my experience here.
i joined this lovely bunch back in july, i do believe? i had actually just finished up writing and self-publishing my third book which wound up being a behemoth (seriously it was a lot) and while i was absolutely and completely braindead when it came to writing, i still wanted to write. i’m a writer. that’s who i am and that’s who i’ll always be. i wanted something a lot more low-stakes, kind of go-with-the-flow, no real pressure and more collaborative than the isolating fun of novel-writing, so i turned back to roleplay. hollywood rps have always been my absolute favorites in the rpc for whatever reason; i have such fond memories in hollywood groups and it’s a fun and creative way for me to just project the love i have for my faves. after a few experiences in groups during late 2017 and early 2018 i was pretty sure that i was done with roleplay. it just wasn’t the same for me, no matter where i went. priorities had shifted and it was no longer about writing because you loved to write. but, me being ever the optimist, i decided to dive back into the tags and see what was still around or had recently popped up. i found this group and i saw that they had just had a taylor swift removed from the group, and hi hello nice to meet you i am taylor swift trash no. 1!!!, i felt like it was all Meant To Be or something like that (plus, she was taken in every other group and that’s who i really wanted to put a hand at writing). so i put in an app for her, got accepted, and i have been plaguing your dashes ever since :~))
in the four-ish months that i have been here, so much has happened in my life. i started my (outrageously stressful) junior year of college, i lost my grandma, i went to go see queen swift in atlanta and meet my baby princess camila, i have had major friend complications and doubts about my career track and i have had just really boring, empty days where everything was going seemingly okay. this group has been there for me through every high, low, and in between. this group has been my escape to run to when i’m stressed or up late at night and can’t sleep or just really looking to be social or want to write something. this group has been so welcoming, warm, and fun; i have had the opportunity to explore my character any which way that i please and form awesome plots with people, and even more awesome friendships ooc. some of you send really, really kind things my way which, fyi, i’m super grateful for and have probably cried over because this was the first time i not only felt welcomed in a group as taylor, but felt welcomed in a group as me. i am so grateful that i get to call this place my internet home and there is absolutely nowhere else i would rather be spending my free time writing. i stand by what i say: this is the best group in the tags, hands down. you could not ask for a more inclusive, diverse, welcoming, creative playground to spend your time on. to all the lovely admins over on main @hollywoodfamerp thank you for doing the heavy lifting and giving us a safe and warm place that we can call home. the work you do never goes unnoticed. you are appreciated and you are so, so loved. ♡
some ~personal~ shoutouts:
@nhxran — peyton, you are without a doubt one of my best friends both in this group and just in general. we had an immediate chemistry as writing partners from that very first starter reply and nothing about that has changed. you are the writing partner i always hoped i would find in a group due to how generous you are in every reply, the way you are willing to headcanon and brainstorm (even at the craziest of hours) and i still remain in awe of you as a roleplayer with the way you juggle such diverse characters, all of which have their prominent voices that never seem to overlap. you are the roleplayer i wish i could be. even though we might sometimes be ships in the night ic, ooc i know that you are always there and you always have my back, and i truly hope you know that the same goes for you. i love you, you intelligent, creative, witty, beautiful, heart-of-gold woman you. i would not have stayed in this group if i had not met you. you are one of my favorite people, period. thank you for being one of my dearest friends.
@cara-x-delevingne — mickey, the first person to ever pop into my ims and say hello (and you were FAST about it too, lol), you have been one of my favorite people to write with! the way you breathe a life into your characters is almost unparalleled to any writer, much less any writer in a hwood group. you have such a talent and not only that, you are funny and kind and inclusive and i am so glad that there are people like you (and you) still out there in this world. we need more people like you. thank you for one of the most epic friendships i’ve ever written in a group and always challenging me to step up to the plate and bring my a-game with taylor. you inspire me and i love you. never change.
@armiehmmer — graaaaace, the law to my swift! you were actually one of the reasons i joined this rp; before i joined i stalked a few blogs and as i have told you (and you have probably seen via my wildin’ ass on twitter) i love jen, so much. i saw how dedicated you were to your jen and how included she was, which i thought was amazing because like my girl t, some people just aren’t about. i figured if you could put in the effort and grind hard enough with her and get positive results, i could do the same for taylor. and here we both are, killin’ it. you are such a lovely person who has always been nothing but kind, i am still endlessly jealous you were in pasadena for rep tour but we’ll let it slide for now, lol. i love you, thank you for being the epitome of grace in this roleplay. you’re a pure light and the dash is dimmer without you on it.
@jstntimberfake — nicki, or should i say, GOD, i don’t know where to begin with you. you are the reason i almost took home a jt standup from 2nd and charles. i love everything that you do on both of your characters. you become them, they stand so far away from the person that you actually are and i think that is the testament of a true, talented writer: they are able to convince you that they’re someone else. and you do, every time. i’m just really, really happy that i get to say that i’m in the same rp group as you because it makes me feel like a Cool Kid on the playground who has light up sneakers. you are so cool and it sometimes lowkey intimidates me, how amazing and talented you are. thank you for always putting a smile on my face. love ya love ya
@itsscarjo — aria, my magnificent love. you are so well spoken and kind and as my clumsy twin, i have no choice but to love you dearly. it’s so nice to just have somebody to talk to sometimes and every time we’ve talked, it’s like being all bundled up in a warm fuzzy blanket. you are so easy to talk to and i cannot wait for the things you and i do on all of our people now that our lives have calmed the heck down and we can come on and write. thank you for being such a spectacular, inviting person. i had several other people sing your praises to me when you joined the group and i can wholeheartedly agree with them. you are one of a kind. big love
@aubreycplaza — marissa, i mcfreakin’ adore you. i’ll be honest, i have not had the best experiences with aubreys in the past but that all goes out the window with you. i’m obsessed with you and all of your people, and to know you and get to write with you is an absolute pleasure. thank you for being so much fun to write with, thank you for giving me so much quality stuff to stalk while i’m on the dash and feeling like trash, thank you for being so understanding of me constantly feeling like trash, i adore you. can’t wait for tay and aubrey to finally go on their fuckin girls trip and become little jetsetters together (forevaaaa)
@jamesrodriqez — hello stranger idk you but i think you’re pretty cool! and i think that you have been one of the most entertaining, fun people to write with in these last couple of weeks when i feel like i’m barely able to write two sentences that haven’t been written onto a powerpoint that i’m copying off of. you just give me so much excitement about writing and plotting and that excitement is something that can be difficult to find again after you’ve gotten comfortable in a group. thank you for keeping things refreshing and new for me and taylor. i’m excited to get back to all of our fun shenanigans (and to love on your new people bc yes amen) #jandrea forever
@jarpadking — nikki! first of all, i’m in awe at how fast you can come up with replies on TWO characters that are so well-crafted and authentic to that person’s voice. i struggle just writing a single coherent reply on taylor half the time, lmao. you are one of the hearts in this group, the way you make it an effort to branch out and talk to every single person and create connections with both the mun and the character. you’re one of the unsung heroes and if we could all be a little more you like you, we’d be the best roleplayers around. love you so much, my dear, and of course, thank you for being so warm and inclusive. people like you are rare
@itskeeoone — i have spent all day binging pll because that is how i choose to veg out and every time i see keegan on screen now, i think of you, em. you just write him so wonderfully and truthfully and i don’t ever want to let you go (please don’t ever leave this group or i’ll cry). taylor and keegan have given me all the life, they are very similar people and i’m happy that my 15 year old self’s dreams are coming true by their worlds colliding here in the group. i’m so excited to write even more with you now that the holidays are coming and i’ll actually, y’know, BE AROUND, but yes. love you.
@goddamnjade — lucy, you know anybody that is as big into the dance scene as i am HAS to get a spot on this appreciation post ;) but also, you have just been one of the loveliest people ever? i think you’re one of the hearts in this group, the reason that it is why it is and the reason that it’s so warm and welcoming. you are so inclusive and fun to write with and i really hope that i get to talk with you more ooc because i adore youuuu!
@yosebstan — rileyyyy, gotta admit, sometimes you intimidate me but it is only because you are an absolute fuckin’ legend in this group, and not just because of your admin status. your characters have something that a lot of people try hard to encompass but can’t ever capture, and that’s longevity. your characters never feel stale, they always feel new and fresh and like real people, not just tropes or over-concentrated personality traits and i get so excited every time i see one of your people on the dash. i’m lucky to be in a group with you, so so lucky. i sometimes hope your natural inclination for rp will rub off on me and make me a better writer. love you, and i really hope we get to do some fun stuff in the future!!
@jpgsasha — cami, you and i clicked so fast when we started replying to each other’s stuff back when you still had camila and i cannot WAIT to write with you as my honey sasha (seriously, a fuckin’ plus switch). we had some of the LONGEST replies on the dash at one point but when you’re inspired, you’re inspired! thank you for inspiring me and being one of the most down to earth people in this group. you deserve all the fuckin’ love. please love me so i can give it to you.
@avycias — katieeee!! it legit surprised me to find out how close we are to one another #hurricane watch friends, lol. you are so sweet and your alycia is absolutely legendary, i was biting at the bit to write with you from the minute i joined this group. i hope we get to do all of the things with taylor and alycia because writing with you makes me so happy. you are wildly talented and the way alycia comes to life every time you type something is magical. you write her with a conviction and you make her your own and i think that’s why i adore her so much. thank you for being you. love you much babes
@milesdominic — marie! miles and taylor had one of the cutest friendships ever and it needs to make a comeback asap, because 1) that, and 2) writing with you comes so naturally (*plays naturally by selena gomez and the scene*). i barely have to think about what i want to reply to you with because there’s a chemistry there that is hard to replicate; thank you for keeping me on my toes and my brain alert and being such a fun person to write with. you give me the chance to explore sides of taylor’s voice that other people look over and that i love, and that’s all anybody could ask in a writing partner, someone who allows them to run wild!
@blccmtroye — fiona, i fuckin’ love your troye. he is too much fun to interact with, and i am thankful that you gave this group a shot (and that you gave me a shot). i couldn’t imagine this place without the wit and the charm that you supply with every single post you make.
@flynnpls — marie, i’m just in love with all of your people and you. you’re one of the people i feel like i admire from afar because i stay in awe of the way you write and how effortless it seems to come to you. you balance all of these different personalities with finesse and i really do feel like i’m talking to or reading the words of the actual celebrity in every single reply. i am crossing my fingers that i get the opportunity to write some really incredible things with you here in the future because i have such mad respect for you.
+ to everyone else that i either forgot to mention, have not really formed connections with outside of replies or haven’t had the chance to talk to you/your babies due to my super fun hiatus: i stalk so many of you on the dash and keep up with your plots and where you take your characters and it really and truly is such a privilege to be in the same group as you. they say that birds of a feather flock together and if that’s the case, i am simply a reflection of all the things y’all are. kind, funny, clever, creative, welcoming, intelligent, and a part of something, and i could not ask for more. i love all of you, whether we’ve talked or not (believe me i probably stalk you and just love you from afar) and any time you ever need a friend, call me beep meeeeee. i’m always game to do things with taylor and explore her more through whatever plots or connections we could create, and i promise that if i don’t respond to an im, it’s because i’m off on hiatus or it got eaten. i want to do ALL the things with ALL of you. come hit me up! let me love you! k thanks!!!
obligatory thank you note to my queen taylor alison for existing. love u bitch.
xx, caroline

Fangirl Asks...
I know, I know. This has taken me 5-ever to complete. Thank you to @bbcshipper , @elasticmonk , @fourteen-teacups @thatginchygal and @like-an-officer-and-a-sergeant for tagging me in this fandom questionaire. I really enjoyed doing it, and got kinda loquacious with my response. This is definitely worthy of a Reaad More break!
@bbcshipper asked:
1. How much do your real life friends/family know about your fandom life? My family knows, or think they know. Friends, nope. They know I’m a fan, but have no idea of the extent of my madness. I hold back with “normals.”
2. Have you ever embarrassed yourself fangirling? I’m sure I don’t know what you’re talking about.
3. What’s a recurring theme of fanfictions of you OTP that you find annoying/dislike? Live and let live, and all, but I avoid nun smut.
4. What are some prompts/ideas you might want explored more in fanfic? (asking this one for some ideas, hope that’s okay!) I love fluff, of course, but I really enjoy fics that explore the real-world, ordinary problems and compromises that come with marriage.
5. What’s the meaning behind your tumblr name? There’s an Everly Brother’s song of the same name, and my Grandmother used to sing it to me. I commissioned an artist to make a stained-glass yellowbird and its become a sort of talisman.
6. Favorite moment(s) with your OTP? The hand kiss, the misty road, “What’s she like?” the so-sexy almost kiss in the tent, Teddy’s birth (I know. Don’t @ me. I complain about the story arc, but I’m not heartless)
7. How far would you travel to meet your OTP in real life? If I were to meet them IRL, I’d have to pretend I was someone else. I’m not good with worlds colliding.
8.Do you have a playlist for your OTP? (again, looking for ideas!) Sorry, not really. I’m terrible with playlists. There was an old Youtube video featuring Pink and Nate Ruess of “Just Give Me a Reason” that gets to me.
9. What about your real life would shock your OTP? Shelagh might find it odd that Patrick looks remarkably like Mr. Birdy.
10. What have you learned from being a part of the fandom? I’ve learned a great deal about how different people cope with anxieties.
11. What’s the best thing about your fandom? My friends.
@elasticmonk asked:
1. What was your first fandom? Call the Midwife is my first true-blue, throw-yourself-into-it fandom.
2. What’s your favorite thing about your main fandom now? People get me.
3. What is your main fandom? Turnadette (sorry--do people actually have others? jk)
4. Who is your favorite character of all time? I can’t think of one, honestly, but I’ll say Molly Weasley, because of the next question.
5. What three quality’s do you think you share with your favorite character (of anything)? Molly Weasley is devoted to her family, not afraid to love them and not let them get away ith nonsense, and brave enough to stand up for right.
6. Where would you like to see your OTP vacation and why? I’d like to see them at the beach in Torquay. If Shelagh could wear the yellow swimsuit with the white band across the top, that would be ideal. In fact, if they could live out any of my fics, I’d be a very happy bird.
7. What’s your favorite gif from your fandom? I don’t know how to post an annotated gif mid-post, so I’ll just describe it. It involves tiptoes, dancing, and a giant hand sprawled across a tiny back.
8. What’s your favorite picture from your fandom? NGL

9. Who was your first OTP? I guess I shipped Jo and Prof Bhaer as a kid?
10. When did you start your main fandom? I lurked through 2013 and into 2014. I was very wary of the internet world, so when I finally identified myself, my palms were sweaty! (My very first post was my first fic ever!)
11. AU or canon complaint fanfiction? Canon-compliant, but I will read AU if it’s done in a way that sheds a new light on the characters.
@thatginchygal asked:
1. What was the first fanfic you ever read? I can’t remember the first Call the Midwife fic I ever read. It was all such a blur!! But...I think the first ever fic-like thing I ever read was a published Star Trek novel by A.C. Crispin, entitled Ishmael. It was a mash-up of Star Trek and Here Come the Brides. So, so right.
2. What was the first fanfic you ever wrote (if any)? Not Listening
3. Your last text message is the title of your next fanfic. What is it (and a brief summary)?
“I got you a glow stick.” It was for a candlelight march. I wonder...now i may have to do some research into marches in London in the early 1960′s...Or reinterpret that text for an altogether different purpose...
4. Do you keep your fandom interests a secret from your RL family/friends?
No, it’s not a secret. At least, not generally. My feeling is, I have nothing to be embarrassed about, so if they want to see, then go look. If they have a problem with anything they see, that would be on them. Fortunately, their respect for my right to have something just for myself--added to a little bit of fear of what they might find--keeps them away.
5. What is one of your favorite scenes between your OTP? I think Im going to pick the almost kiss in the tent. It’s SoMarried!! and very sexy. But you know, add about 100 more scenes and I’m good.
6. Do you have a playlist for your OTP? Sorry, no.
7. Why do I suck at coming up with these questions?? You’re better than I am!
8. Would you want to live in the ‘world’ of your favorite fandom? Maybe visit? Probably not. I’m content to watch from here.
9. What is your favorite piece of fandom merchandise? Oh, this is so easy. I have the companion books to the series, a boatload of Nonnatun Holiday cards, my Yellowbird stained glass statue, but what I love the most are the crocheted Yellowbird my friend Soph made me, and the Yellowbird Christmas card Mushy sent me this year. It’s framed!
In the fall of 2015, a group of lucky Nonnatuns went to a CtM panel that featured Heidi Thomas, Stephen McGann, Jenny Agutter, Emerald Fennell and Dame Pippa Harris. A week later I recieved this promotional post card in the mail:

I have to admit, I was a little teary when I saw it, mostly because I was so touched that in the midst of their own fun, two friends had me in their thoughts. They told the panelists about me, and how their show had helped to build friendships. Everyone signed messages to me on the back. I’m pretty sure HT’s message included an invite to tea.
10. Have you ever drifted away from a fandom only to be sucked back in (perhaps by a new season or change of storyline)? Not really.
11. Do you prefer canon-compliant fanfic or AUs? Definitely Canon-compliant.
@fourteen-teacups asked:
1. How did you come to join your first online fandom? Blame Call the Midwife.
2. If your first fangirling obsession pre-dates access to fandoms, what was the show and/or your OTP? In college, a friend was a huge Start Trek fan. By default, I got interested (alas, not obsessed).
3. If your OTP came to visit you in your town (in present day) where would you take them? We have a lot of parks suitable for camping. I could take them there to see a lovely site, then bring them back to my house for a nice cuppa and fresh sheets.
4. What three things do you have in common with your favorite character?
5. What prop would you most like to have from your favorite show? (I borrowed this question from a behind the scenes CtM interview.) The photograph of the cricket team on the surgery mantle and Shelagh’s long-lost sunflower brooch.
6. Same question but for an article of clothing. I want the Tan Overcoat of Love.
7. Where would you like to see your OTP go on vacation and why? See Elasticmonk q6
8. Do you have a) multiple OTPs; or are you b) a one-OTP-at-a-time person? I have a great appreciation for many OTP’s, but for me, there can be only one.
9. In question 8, if you answered a) list your top three OTPs; if you answered b) what was the OTP you dropped for your current one?
10. If you lurked in your fandom before joining (or even if you didn’t), is there a fellow fan whom you consider “famous” in the fandom that makes you fangirl whenever they comment on your posts? I was desperate for @this-unruly-heart to notice me! One day she messaged me asking if I was the one who wrote a "Letters” fic that she loved.
11. Was there a particular person who was especially welcoming and/or helpful when you first joined your current fandom? Many of the Nonnatuns of old that were supportive of my early efforts have moved on to other things, but the boost they gave to my confidence was immeasurable. Oh, and Sarge, too!
@like-an-officer-and-a-sergeant asked:
1. When did you start taking part in fandom(s)? I dipped my toe into the Star Trek fandom back in the late 1980′s. A dear friend was a huge fan, and her enthusiam was contagious. Sadly, she died in December 1988, and I had to leave fandoms behind. Then, in 2005 we moved away from the very close world we had built, and I was lonely. I started to look around for period dramas to watch and stumbled upon North and South. I was unbelievably grateful it wasn’t the old Civil War mini-series, and I started to read everything I could find. I came across C-19, and found fanfic as I now know it. As much as I enjoyed it though, I wasn’t ready to participate as anything other than a lurker until Call the Midwife came along.
2. Which fandoms? Sorry, I think I answered that in th eprevious response
3. How long did you stay? Ibid
4. Did you write fanfics? Yes, although sometimes I need a kick in the butt to make sure it doesn’t become a past tense thing.
5. Any memorable funny event in your fandoms? So many ridiculous things have happenned here. Hiatus Challenges, Limericks (!!!), Twitter responses (remember when HT used to answer our questions? Flat/house! Names!), Nonnatun Holiday Card Exchanges...It seems that the funniest things would come out of nowhere.
6. Did you get long-time friends? (even as Real People)? Definitely. There are people I have met here that I feel I know as well or better than people IRL. And one poor soul has had to bear meeting me in person and somehow still continues to be my friend.
So here are my questions.
How has fangirling made an impact in your life?
What makes fangirling most worthwhile to you?
What have you learned about yourself by being a part of a fandom?
I tag: @elasticmonk @thatginchygal @fourteen-teacups @like-an-officer-and-a-sergeant @lovetheturners @hihereami @pellucidthings @gabolange @missouiser @ilovemushystuff @it-is-bugs @crinklybrownleaves @majsmom @missbergmans @miss-ute @snoopctm @mg-bsl381 @turnt4turnadette @cooldoyouhaveaflag @eatapinkwafer @weshallc @westcoastwilma @skerri @beatrix-franklin @alice1nwond3rland @sincerelygeertje @silentkw @flyingnonny @anamarialujan @purple-roses-words-and-love @bloghey131313 @poplarpatience @soibhanmannion @kaguyahime1224

Looking For Alaska
Looking For Alaska: John Green

THIS WAS LIKE BRIEFLY EDITED!! BUT IM TIRED SO I WILL EDIT IT MORE TOMORROW SORRY FOR THE SUCKISHNESS OF IT ALL!
Non Spoiler
Basically this books is about trying to find answers on unanswered questions, and dealing with toughest moments in life. Miles ‘Pudge’ Halters attempts to find his Great Perhaps, at a new school, by making new friends...or friends at all really. He succeeds in ways no one is ever prepared for. It is a really good book that I am glad I read
I read this book as part of a books exchange with a friend. I read a book of her choosing and she reads a book mine. I also turned this into a personal challenge ‘Read A Book Outside Your Comfort Zone’.
My thoughts: First I would like to say, I was pleasantly surprised to find I greatly enjoyed it. The characters hooked me, (except Alaska sorry not sorry), as characters always do, and I realized that while, for the most part, fantasy, has great characters, the over all plot is the driving force. But in this book the characters were what made the plot line move forward and that is something I greatly enjoyed.
I have read fantasy since I made my eternal switch into a reader when I was 13 years old. I have gone from my family being shocked I was actually reading a book, to my mom telling me she wished she read like I did, and all I ever read was fantasy. I love it. So imagine my surprise when this book wasn’t part of a 4-7 book series. When the characters did almost exactly what you would thought they would and when not every person you met was an interracial part of the story. Sometimes moments happened, and they never become relevant! THE BOOK WAS ONLY 221 PAGES LONG! IS THAT EVEN REAL LIFE
I am not even sure what genre you would put this under but it opened up my eyes a little. fantasy is still my first love, fantasy can can bring me to worlds I only dream about, can build up so many emotions in me I want scream because of how into the book I am. That will never go away, and that will always be my first choice. This however was calming and I liked the break it gave me from the books I normally read. I suffer from some of the things these characters did and it was sort of nice to read a book where I understood there problems.
SPOILER WARNING
FOR ME: I think the most amazing part is that this story was literally ‘what do we do when someone we love dies’ In fantasy novels people die all the time! Its in the nature of fantasy! Its dark twisted and mysterious, characters we die constantly, CHARACTERS WE LOVE! And there is never a real grieving process because we have to get on with the book! Yeah Joe is dead and that sucks but people are still attacking the castle with fire! Thats more important right now! And even when there was a grieving scene it wasn’t that long and it was not the main focus. When Sirius died Harry grieved, and we saw that, but there were so many other things going on! It was hard to focus on Harrys pain because there were bigger problems! So it was amazing and almost therapeutic for me to read people actually dealing with death for more then a chapter! At the same time I kept expecting Alaska to pop up and be like “It was a hoax I am alive and people are out to get me so I faked my death” Because thats what I am used to, but that didn’t happened she died and I watched her friends deal with the loss and I really enjoyed the view into it.
I LOVED CHIP!!! (I refuse to use there nick names because this isn’t 007.) I loved Chip I think I always will! He was funny and smart and the voice of reason throughout most of the book. Miles was cool and all that but I sort of lost a little respect for him in the beginning over his pinning after Alaska.
I did not like Alaska! Yeah I said it! I didn’t like her! She was annoying!! She wasn’t fun, she wasn’t cool and crazy. She was ANNOYING!!! If she pulled half the s!$@ she pulled on Miles on me I would have B!@#$%! her out so bad! NO you don’t wake people at 7 in the morning BY COMING IN AND PLAYING A VIDEO GAME!!! NO!!! No you don’t YELL IN MY EAR!! We would not have been friends.
This was what I sent to a friend before I found out she dies.
Over all I really enjoyed reading the book it was nice break and I honestly would’t mind reading something like this again HOWEVER my summer reading list continues and like an old dog who didn’t really learn a new trick I’m back to good ol’ fantasy with The Crowns Game by Evelyn Skye!

Thoughts and comments below if you agree or disagree I would love to hear!

Writing Review 2016
Thanks for the tags, @idrelle-miocovani and @ladydracarysao3 :-) This was quite the experience! lol.
Total Number of Stories Completed:
Either zero, or many. What counts as a story? ALL the stories. Dozens. Dozens and dozens.
Total Word Count:
The Dead Season broke 150k with this past update. Total words, though, including everything on the editing room floor, is probably closer to 220k? Geesh. This is not including my Solavellan prompt writing, which who knows, or Teen Wolf, which is at about 10-12k. I have written more words since July than I probably have in the past two years combined. Pre-fandom, I was mostly in edits for a fantasy novel that is now in a drawer, so none of that was productive word count, as far as I’m concerned.
Fandoms Written In:
Dragon Age, and Solavellan specifically.
Looking Back, Did You Expect To Write More Fic Than You Thought You Would This Year, Less, Or About What You’d Expected?
Probably LESS, though who knows. Nobody expects to write 250k+ words in five months, probably. Unless you’re Stephen King in the 80s.
What’s Your Own Favorite Story Of The Year?
My favorite thing I wrote this year is going to be very similar to my best, but I’ll try to be discerning. Writing my dear sweet charming Solas in Man of Faith Pt. I and II (Chapters 22 and 23 of The Dead Season) was a super challenging and rewarding experience. I remember I had a terrible cold when I wrote these chapters and was just like, somehow on point with Solas being suave af and generally irresistible in his silver tux at a party in Val Royeaux. The scene in Chapter 29: Soft, Softer, Softest in which cowboy Solas really fucks up those bandits and saves the girl was also one my most favorite things to write this year. Any time I get to write Solas fussing with his gloves and channeling his anger through his sartorial accessories, that is my favorite thing to write.
Did You Take Any Writing Risks This Year?
Well, I gave my fantasy novel, which I once had huge ambitions for, to an agent who wanted edits by November. Those edits never happened. I was surprisingly zen, though, and I dusted off my hands, and I put that novel in a drawer. Like, come at me, cruel world. Maybe this means I’m old.
Do You Have Any Fanfic Or Profic Goals For The New Year?
Finishing The Dead Season. I can really only work in one universe at a time, so I need to complete this project before I can move on to anything else. I have a small novel planned that’s grown out of my time here in fandom that I’m hoping to begin later this year, once Sene and Solas are squared away (because I need them to be happy).
Best Story Of The Year?
My (technically) best chapter from The Dead Season, to date, is Chapter 33: The Architect. This is my professional and personal opinion. This chapter really starts to get into the rather delicate point of view of Mythal, and it cracks open some of Solas’s more obscure, totally off-canon backstory. It’s some of the best prose writing I’ve ever done, and it’s like, very, essentially me and my vision for how language and point of view can function in storytelling. Like, I am immensely proud of that piece and the control I managed on the page. I MIGHT let my husband read it. MIGHT.
Most Popular Story Of The Year?
I don’t entirely know what this means? The Dead Season is my most popular fiction right now. But I have no idea how “popular” it actually is. I just know I have my readers, who I love, and every once in a while, a new one comes on board, and I’m pretty happy. <3
Story of Mine Most Under-appreciated By The Universe, IMO:
My Teen Wolf series. It’s new, and I know the pieces are short and unusual, and there’s no pre-established ship or romance associated, and no real long term linear narrative, and it’s really just me being my deepest, most literary self, but they’re some of the best little glimmers of writing I’ve ever done, and I do wish they got a bit more love. I mean, it’s okay lol. Because the readers I have are FERVENT and I love you guys SO MUCH because you’re all just really sharp and you say such smart things. Like holy shit. Wonderful.
Most Fun Story To Write:
Teen Wolf has thus far been my most “fun” project, as it’s low stakes, and the pieces are little, and basically I get to just take whatever I’m reading or whatever sort of voice or vision or art I’m into at the moment and put it to use. Also, I just love writing Arlathan imagery. Crystals and smoke and the Depression-era “mean streets” and like, suspenders and bird hats and really, really tall trees. Abandoned street cars. Steam engines. The sky is alive. The Great Gate. I love painting this world.
Story With The Single Sexiest Moment:
Uh. Okay. I kind of want my readers to weigh in on this. Anyone care to share? lol. There are so many. :blushes fiercely: There’s a pretty hot, impromptu moment with Sene and Solas in an alley in Val Royeaux during Chapter 21: It’s raining in Val Royeaux. that comes to mind. Everything’s a little sexier when you’re in danger of getting caught, right? Or is that just me.
Most Sweet Story:
“Watching Sene Plant the Daisies.” I cry. Also, maybe “Saying Something.” These are just my favorite future domestic bliss pieces. I need contentment and closure for my elves.
“Holy Crap, That’s Wrong, Even For You!” Story:
I literally have no idea what this means?
Story That Shifted My Own Perceptions Of The Characters:
The Dead Season, en masse. Building out Solas so completely, from psychology to backstory, has proven to be some of the most in-depth, surprising, and accomplished character work I’ve ever done. I have not picked up DA: I in months for fear of what I’d find there, ie: any Solas that is not my own.
Most Unintentionally Telling Story:
I have no idea what this means either??
Hardest Story To Write:
When I think of the most grueling, outright difficult writing I’ve done this year, I immediately think of the Crestwood saga, which is Chapters 25-29 of The Dead Season. Holy crap. The sheer emotional range and just plethora of characters and voices, Flemeth, Abelas getting high in the trees, Morrigan’s childhood, Solas and the bandits and his total freak-out on the bridge. IT WAS SO HARD. Like wading through thick, molasses pools of purple imagery and angst. Bleh. I’m proud of it, but I remember when I finally got back to Skyhold and Solas was up on the battlements breathing the clean, crisp air that tasted like “clear liquor” I almost died from relief. @amburururu you can probably attest to all this lol. and @thevikingwoman, who I probably cried to more than once on IM.
Biggest Disappointment:
My entire experience with literary publishing this year. I’d tell you all about it, but it’s boring and cold and long and filled with bitterness lol. I try to keep things positive here. Ask me about it any time, if you’re interested. In any case, I’m still here, and not there, so yeah...:-)
Biggest Surprise:
That I’m here at all? My husband, who is also a writer, still marvels that it’s lasted this long. But I get more joy out of writing these days than I ever have, and I’m certainly more productive than I’ve ever been. Getting to hang out with my actual readers and practicing writing with speed and efficiency and beauty and doing such awesome character work on a weekly basis has been a really cleansing experience. Like, writing is not this warm and exciting everywhere. The Solavellan fandom in particular has been very good to me and is, I think, just a creative boon. I’m so glad to have discovered it.
tags for @littleblue-eyedbird @5ftgarden @thevikingwoman @ma-sulevin @redinkofshame @thelyonface @lepetitchoucommie (if you’d like) and any other writers I’m most certainly missing, but who would like to do this. It was sort of grueling but an interesting exercise, for sure. <3
