-5! :)
Do you/would you like to write professionally?I technically write professionally (thanks grad school), but not fiction. I never really considered it as a potential option...
Which author has influenced you the most?a lot of authors have over the years, from tamora pierce and patricia c wrede, to brandon sanderson and terry pratchett and neil gaiman, to zora neale hurston and nk jemisin. and those are just the ones I can think of off the top of my head. it’s funny tracing particular things from different authors in my own writing--jemisin and sanderson are largely responsible for how I think about worldbuilding, for example, although you can also toss in several other authors.
Any guilty pleasures (books/fics)?hm........ okay look I read a lot of shoujo growing up and I still really like some of yuu watase’s stuff. it’s got a lot of problems in SO many different ways but you can’t not read fushigi yuugi during junior high and come away with 1: mild-to-moderate emotional trauma, and 2: a love for that manga.
What’s better (or the least bad): character over plot or plot over character?I firmly believe that plot should come from characterization. not that one should be fronted over the other, but a plot should advance how characters grow and change. it should be part of the impetus.
Do you think stories can change lives? Is there a story that has changed yours?abso-fuckin-lutely. all the authors I listed above have a story that has somehow changed my life, but for now, let me just say that before I read a wrinkle in time when I was 9 I didn’t realize that it was okay for little girls to be smart and innovative and travel through space and time, even in a place like our world (or somewhere adjacent to it).
