I remember my mom telling me as a teenager that if I ever got pregnant she’d rather me either have an abortion or keep the baby, because she didn’t want one of our family members in the foster care system. I thought that was outrageous at the time, but now I get it. Especially the way these white families treat their black adopted kids like trophies until they’re old enough to have their own opinions.
