it lessens her nerves knowing that no matter what happens, jiwon has her back, and vice-versa. everyone was victim to whatever game so jiseob was playing, this was so called survival but if rose had to define it, it was cruel. still, it was a competition and rose wasn’t prepared to rig her chances of succeeding just yet. the nerves however, come and while not totally overwhelming, are definitely present. dramatic shots that’ll be used for editing, among other things. rose knows it’ll be time for both her and jiwon to go their separate ways, and for rose to take to the stage. and so she does, her name is called. park chaeyoung. it’s been nearly a year since rose signed to royal, back then, the girl rarely came to her korean name. it was as though a stray had never been given a name until now. as of this moment, park chaeyoung was just as much her as rose, or roseanne park. she carries her acoustic guitar in hand, and she’s taken back to that very day in november, perched upon a stool singing a sweet love song which somehow caught so jiseob’s eye. she must of been good enough, as she took out the competition and he offered her a contract. so, she’s curious as to whether he’ll have anything nice to say about her take on another sort of love song, or if he’ll just comment on her lack of stage presence again.

traditionally, she plays on a guitar without use of an amplifier, although rose was due to make an investment at some point, and at this moment, she’s thankful she did. she takes centre stage behind a microphone, to which she doesn’t adjust until she’s ready to perform. brown waves cascade over her shoulders, today’s outfit is simple, understated. much like rose herself. she looks out over the spectators with a smile. resting her guitar against the stool waiting, she turns and looks out across the stage, directly at so jiseob. “hello, my name is park chaeyoung.” rose says for her introduction. she never really knows how to go about these things, they always seem to be so structured and stiff. “i’ll be singing,” she continues, hand resting atop of the microphone. her eyes catch sight of her nails and rings, which glimmer beneath the bright stage lights. “and playing guitar. i hope you enjoy.” rose nods her head before turning on her heels, taking her guitar in her hands, swiftly plugging the amplifier cord into the body of the guitar. taking her seat, atop of a stool she had requested, rose then adjusts the microphone, lowering it so it hovers just where it should. she nods to herself, checking her set up once more.

there is something refreshing about here here, playing guitar; having some control over when she begins and what she sings. it’s feels as though her choices as an artist are constrained these days, managers and instructors choose what they sing and how they appear and there is nothing more rejuvenating then having a say over how she portrays herself to the public, to the ceo of her company. rose purses her lips before beginning to play, and nothing comes more naturally to her than this, singing accompanied by guitar. it’s as though she was born to do this.

the thoughts that had raced through her head the moment she decided to go with honey had been absurd. would korea understand such a lgbt+ friendly song, the lyrics, the meaning behind the song? would this be a good enough reason to have her eliminated off the show? rose hadn’t any plans of turning into a social justice warrior just now, but come to think of it, if she was delivering some sort of message, it was a damn good one.

her favourite part of the song. her eyes waver between the guitar in her lap and the audience, she looks over all of the contestants, the girls, with a gentle smile as she sings, her gaze soft, sincere. rose had somehow fallen into the trap of reading into comments about her, from various netizens across the net. some were supportive, while the great masses weren’t. many had said she seemed to be the stereotypical idol girl who would step on the shoulders of others to succeed, which had rose puzzled, as that was the total opposite to what image she often portrayed. rose, for the most part portrays herself as being soft, sincere and very real. and a performance like this, raw and natural, should show that. she thinks about jiseob’s comments regarding her stage presence and how jaekyung has labelled her as disappointing. if anything, it just has rose laughing to herself, in the back of her head. it’s enough to push her forward.

i countdown to the clock, saw you awake. don’t walk away, or would you wait for me? i go out to the bar, screw hangin’ with the stars, don’t even have a car, but you would wait for me.

from day one, rose has told herself again and again that she isn’t idol material, nor a wannabe. so, her place on this show, and the fact that she’s still here has her baffled. and that people have the audacity to judge her based on facts that are total and utter bullshit. if anything, she’s not manufactured, nor will she ever be and if she has to build her career from the bottom up without the help of a successful company, then so be it. she was ready for hard work.

she’s starting to belt it out a little more the further she progresses into the song, grooving along to the song. to onlookers, it’d be obvious to notice that she’s enjoying herself. when she’s here, singing, playing guitar together in unison, it almost feels as though she’s in her own little world, a cocoon of safety. nothing could possibly go wrong within this universe although she had to remind herself that this is royal survival and everything will go wrong as people who aren’t deserving of elimination go home before people like her. people who actual have idol potential. as supposed to, rose goes back and forth with her eye contact, keeping a steady medium between both her hands on the guitar and the audience, being sure to give so jiseob the eye contact he supposedly deserves.

perfectly timed, she cuts playing guitar, although it doesn’t stray from her lap. rose looks upwards, towards the audience, a hand reaching for the microphone to rest atop of it. she’s singing in acapella, without backing vocals or music to to sing along to. and now, it’s just rose and her voice, ending with a sweet smile and a gaze that could kill.

A staff member leads you down Royal’s winding hallways to So Jiseob’s office, then opens the door and leads you inside, where the CEO awaits, sitting at his desk. He doesn’t look up as you enter; he’s too preoccupied with paperwork in front of him. Seated across from his desk, next to an empty chair, is a company lawyer whom you recognize from before; she’d been present when you signed your initial company contract. The staff member directs you to take the empty chair next to the lawyer and then leaves. You hear the door close and the latch click back into place just as your CEO finally looks up and offers the tiniest hint of a smile.

He folds his hands on the desk in front of him, eyes settling on yours. “When trainees first sign a contract with a company, they are devoting themselves to at least two years of training. They usually don’t expect the time to pass so quickly, but it does,” he ruminates mildly.  “Years of training and hopes leads to one dream usually: debut.”

“But, you’re no ordinary trainee. Since our pre-debut project started in August, you’ve been groomed to be a member of DE:CODE, a debut group I have incredibly high hopes for. Since then, I’ve seen you grow a lot in your training. You’ve had your ups and downs, plenty of both good and bad.” He pauses, and diverts his attention back to his desk, where he shuffles paperwork until he sets one singular sheet of paper in front of him. “But you are their leader. I believe that, from this moment on, you’ll have what it takes to help turn these nine boys into a complete group. I’ve been proud of your growth here, and I trust you to do your best to continue to improve, even after debut. This, here,” he says, motioning towards the document, “is a contract exclusive to DE:CODE and will tie you to this group, and to Royal Entertainment, for the next six years.”

He finally becomes a little less stoic, and shows the glimpse of a real smile as he slides the contract toward you and hands you a pen. “If we share the same vision of making DE:CODE one of the top boy groups in all of Korea, and you wish to be a part of this journey, you know what to do.”

when he’s led down the halls to their ceo’s office, he’s prepared for once. has a hunch already what this is going to be about; no scolding. no contract renewal because it’s, like, half a year too early for that. it’s going to be about de:code, has to be. his future in the group.

but that doesn’t make it any less nerve-wracking.

his posture is a little stiff as baekhyun takes a seat in front of their ceo, shoulders tense and hands clasping together in his lap, he has to force himself to not play with his fingers out of nervousness. barely able to look at the man sitting opposite of him, reminded of all those times he’s been in front of him like this – all those times during the mgas. his private audition shortly after where he has actually been present, where he was told one of the reasons why he got kicked out of the competition ( can you filter yourself for the sake of the company, words that are still ringing in baekhyun’s ears years later. burned into his mind ) and got handed his contract personally by him as well only moments afterwards. the renewal of his trainee contract almost two years ago and soon it’s time for another one.

this time, though, he’s getting a whole new contract. 

one that makes him officially part of de:code for the next six years. so close. his dream, it’s so close. he just needs to take a pen and sign the document and it’s done. he’s an idol. going to be with debut almost in his grasp, the last few preparations ahead of them  and he wants it so much, it brings tears to his eyes. the familiar sting in them flustering him and he can only stare at the contract in front of him.

ever since all of them got placed into the debut lineup, he’s been full of doubt. had a hard time dealing with all the sudden changes the news brought, the lack of future opportunities and freedom because he just couldn’t see all the new possibilities opening up because of this. because he couldn’t accept that he’s finally getting what he’s been working for all this time. he didn’t want to move out from home and into the dorm with eight other boys, didn’t want to stop being a trainee for some reason. not some reason – because he was scared.

he still is.

that probably won’t stop for a long time and that’s alright. he’s been doubting himself, all of this, so much but nothing has ever felt more right in this moment. this has never felt so right and it makes baekhyun’s throat feel all tight, his chest too. this is his dream, everything he’s ever wanted ever since he was a kid. everything he’s been training for and he’s finally going to get it. finally finally finally. he can’t quite believe it. baekhyun picks up the pen that has been offered to him, fingers shaking more than he’d like them to.

stares at the sheet of paper. leader…. it’s still a title that scares him, probably the most out of everything. a heavy weight on his shoulders now that it’s official, not him just wanting to take the lead and help the other trainees out. but it will be a burden he’s willing to take, not only a reminder but also promise to himself that he’ll always give his best for his members. for the company as well.

“thank you so much,” he says, voice a little choked up and he bows his head low, pen grasped tightly in between his fingers. he presses his eyes shut. “thank you—thank you so much.” and when he looks back up, he signs the paper with his name. byun baekhyun, de:code’s leader. their main vocal.

and it feels a little like he’s crossing the finish line but baekhyun knows that, from now on, it’s only starting.

OOC NOTE: First of all, congratulations to arriving at the final step before debut! I know it’s been a long and crazy journey, and I’m so glad you’ve stuck through it. When you are ready, feel free to post this prompt with Baekhyun’s response to it.

Should Baekhyun choose to SIGN the DE:CODE contract, he will be employed by Royal Entertainment without a need to renew a contract until the duration of this one has concluded. As a reward for making it this far, he will receive THREE WEEKENDS unpaid vacation time to use any time between now and the end of April, so long as it doesn’t clash with any special debut activities (such as music show appearances, meaning he can’t actually use his vacation time until after his music show performances have finished.)

Should he choose to REJECT this contract with Royal and DE:CODE, he will leave the company, effective immediately upon rejection. He will be able to keep all of his debut points, but will not be able to take any trainee workshops or earn any more debut points/workshop points until he becomes a trainee again. He will not have any special advantage over newer characters when he auditions for other companies in the future, and should he become a trainee at a new company he will be considered a junior trainee all over again, even though he will still have her debut points and would be eligible for debut right away. He WILL have the right to audition for Royal again, but the fact that he gave up a contract renewal, especially a debut one, WILL be taken into account in final casting decisions.

He will have up to one weeks to make his decision IC, meaning that if he does not make a decision by January 31st, he will automatically be cut from the company. Exceptions can be made for those on hiatus.
