see, if we had an app to log/track sports a la letterboxd like i've been wishing for years, we also could have a sports wrapped. like you've watched x hours of sports this year, you've rated your team's games 1 star 8 times, you've seen your favorite player lose a final 3 times ... it would be so fun

The Top 5 Shooting Guards In Nba History
Has anyone else noticed how much more attention the NBA is getting? The popularity of the games are noted in part by the fact that NBA sports gear flies off of the shelf and the racks as soon as it's put there! What used to be primarily a NFL or MLB gig has now become an NBA niche as well. There are more commercials with past and present NBA celebs (and they are usually hilarious!) There are more home hosted NBA parties, which also used to be fairly reserved for MLB and Football.
Tumblr media
youtube
First, Jennings has a explosive first step to the hoop. He can get to any spot on the basketball floor. That is very important for point guards to learn while trying to guide a team. There should be no questions now concerning his shooting abilities. For example, Jennings scored 55 points against the Golden State Warriors on November 14th. He is the youngest player in nba history to score 50 points or more. At just 20 years old, I don't think there should be anymore doubt about his maturity and willfulness to achieve greatness. Some players have a gift to score, and control the flow of the game. Jennings has the ability to dominate and distribute the ball as needed. There are just a few point guards in NBA history that can actually claim that roll. The first NHL team is well down the list at $270 million for the Detroit Red Wings but, that's still $15 million more than the Tigers. In fact, the 2 to 300 million range represents the most common price tag in sports. There's a good mix of 40 NHL, nba broadcast, and MLB teams all in that grouping. HDTV offers low-cost HD entertainment, from networks, basic channels and premium channels. Not only do you get the standard 720p but you also get the elusive Blu-Ray quality 1080p resolution. You can experience TV like never before, with fuller color and more details than you remember. Now, Directv subscribers have a plethora of options when it comes to American sports. Football, baseball, hockey, NASCAR ... these are important to sports fans. When the major sports have play-offs like the NFL or NBA, you can count on those rabid sports fans purchasing a 'pass' which buys a whole block of games. The Dish Network does offer sports, but they are more global in their choices. You will likely find rugby, lacrosse and soccer just as much as the football or baseball. They just don't have as much of a selection. So, if sports are your thing, then going for a Directv dish and satellite system is the best choice for you. Wouldn't it be great if we could create this type of emotion that for a furniture store? Imagine radio shows talking about trundle beds, recliner sofas and nesting tables. Well it's hard to get excited about china cabinets the same way we do about football - and we never will. 메리트 The only things that tap into our minds like sports is politics and religion. Those will too quickly become controversial for the entrepreneur. #2 - Kevin Durant. Also a small forward - for the Oklahoma City Thunder - Kevin Durant is one of the fastest rising talents in the nba broadcast rights. At hardly 22 years old, he is the backbone of the team, with a PPG and RPG of 29.3 and 7.30 respectively. With only 2 years of professional basketball under his belt, Durant may well be worth watching for over a decade to come. With the no. 11 pick in the NBA Draft, the Golden State Warriors may have an idea who will be available, but there are several players that have the possibility of their draft stock rising and falling within the next nine days. If you haven't checked out an NBA game recently, you may want to do so. Once you do you will probably become a big fan. Then you will just need to pick your favorite team and go shopping!

Content Introduction
For my personal brand, I have decided to report major trades, current events, and updates for all four major sports in the United States. Those sports include the National Hockey League, the National Football League, Major League Baseball, and the National Basketball Association. Throughout the rest of the year I want to inform and educate my audience by talking about what is going on in the world of sports while trying to add some humor when I can. To me, sports is an escape of the reality of the real world which is something that is very important in todays society. There is always something to talk about with these four sports because of how popular they are worldwide. Everyone wants to know why certain teams made a particular trade or signed a player and that is where my work starts. Although I do not have direct access to any teams in these leagues, I will still look into as many as possible whenever they are trending or plan on making moves. My personal favorite sports league to follow is the NBA because there is usually always something to talk about. Whether it be locker room drama, trade requests, or free agent signings, there will always be something to write about. The same could be said for the NFL. Players in the NFL are always looking to try and renegotiate their contract situations, find a new team to play for, or off field drama. The biggest thing these two leagues have in common is the crazy amount of athleticism the players possess. There is always a jaw dropping highlight each night from players in these leagues which make for good content. My favorite league to watch and observe is the NHL. Although this league is somewhat an under looked league, there are a lot of top notch athletes who make unbelievable plays night in and night out. Hockey is arguably the hardest sport to be good at and you have to give a lot of credit to the best of the best who play in the NHL. The MLB is not the most attractive sport to follow but that doesn't mean it should be disregarded. I personally love baseball because it is so unpredictable in my opinion. One swing of the bat can completely change the outcome of the game which can only be said for a sport like baseball. At the beginning of the season, there was a lot of drama in the MLB because they could not decide when they would start the season. This mostly had to do with the fact that the players and owners could not come to an agreement over money. My overall goal with this brand is to have fun with talking about whats happening in sports. I think my audience will appreciate the content that I will produce throughout the year. Sports are a big part of peoples lives and it is important to many that they are able to get there news about their favorite team in a timely, and correct manner.

Pros/Cons Of The Potential UFC Media Distribution Partners
Joey
Jan 8th
When WME-IMG put together a package to buy the UFC, they did so with one premium selling point that enticed enough folks to jump on board for a price. That selling point was a new TV deal, perhaps/arguably the final one of what could be considered the modern TV era. TV is changing but live sports remains the one true cashcow. Of the top 50 most watched events in 2017, all were live sports (37 accounting for pro football).  Pro sports is where the money's at and its why the UFC made a concerted effort back in 2011 to sell itself AS a live sports property. It's why the WWE tries to shoehorn itself as a live sports property when THEIR rights are up. The UFC expected or expects a big rights deal to come through and while the amount of money is open for debate (is the UFC worth $450 million? 200 million? 250 million?), it seems like they're going to at least go up based upon what they were earning. But where? How and why?
For the purpose of this discussion, we are going to operate under the assumption that all things are equal. The money is equal, the years are equal and the number of shows are all equal. EVERYTHING except for the networks are equal. What I'm going to attempt to do is piece together what the pros and cons of a UFC deal with each of the rumored networks involved is. The hope is to come up with a better picture of what the sport hopes to gain by the UFC's involvement with said network.
Fox Sports
Good- Familiarity is cool!
For better or worse, the UFC has been appearing on Fox programming for the past seven years. Be it on Fuel, FX, FXX, Fox Sports 1, Fox Sports 2 or just Fox, this has been the home of the UFC. It hasn't always been perfect nor has it always felt like Fox has given it the best effort but this is home. For the current UFC audience, Fox is where the UFC action is. The product is familiar to Fox, Fox is familiar to the product and after bouncing around for its first three or four years, UFC fans FINALLY have an idea of where these shows are going to be on. The product is a bit stale on Fox and the production could use a seriously new coat of paint but familiarity is what the human brain seeks. Continuity is what it wants, to quote Jerry Jarrett. It's why we all love the Price Is Right! Shit never changes! It's dependable and for Fox, that's probably what the UFC brings the most; dependability. Fox isn't going to get the NFL on FS1, they're not going to get major college football on FS1, they're not going to get a baseball game that in the middle of June can pop a number that's relevant to them. The UFC product guarantees relevance for FS1, it makes it a network that has SOMETHING of note during dry sports months. For the UFC, they get a home that will take just about any event they want plus a place that four times every year they can pop a big number on to boast about.
Bad- Familiarity breeds contempt?
We've all had our issues with Fox cards. The pacing is too long, the start time is too late, the lack of care and attention given to UFC cards in exchange for random events. Having to jump to FS2 in order to see the start of a show or the prelims for a PPV because a baseball game doing 500K viewers has run over. In a way, Fox and the UFC just feels like a tired marriage of convenience. The UFC is treated like the leftover child who has no real place or purpose in the grand scheme of things. Fox needs the UFC and the UFC needs Fox so they just suck it up together. What if that's not the best thing for the sport though? Fox is responsible for the rankings (the UFC is responsible for its shitty implementation) and we all have our issues there. Fox often times seems aloof to the fact that the UFC exists and conversely, it could be argued that the UFC doesn't seem to embrace what the Fox platform is worth either.
My thoughts? Fox just feels like a safe choice where the UFC ultimately winds up. Not good, not bad---just safe. The UFC and Fox have their pattern and it could be modified or amplified based upon whatever the next deal is. Maybe the UFC gets two more Fox cards in exchange for bigger fights on the platform. Maybe Fox gets its hands on the UFC digital library? Whatever the case, it seems pretty much like the safest bet.
ESPN
Good- Worldwide Leader
There's no way around this. Getting on ESPN would be a massive upgrade over Fox's digital platforms. There's questions about ESPN's long term future and about it's growth potential vs Fox Sports but there's simply no way you can say "I'd rather be on FS1 vs ESPN!" ESPN would provide the UFC with something Fox can't; genuine lead in material. Some of Top Rank's best numbers aren't based around a sizable interest in the fights they're having but on having a fair and healthy lead in. Instead of the UFC's lead in being a battle between two teams in the MWC, it could be Alabama vs Mississippi State. Imagine having the NBA to lead in for your events? ESPN brings a certain prestige to the UFC plus the UFC could, in theory, appear on ESPN or ESPN 2 or whatever network they're needed on. If you're big on the digital aspect of things, ESPN has digital properties where the UFC could find a home.
Bad- What if there's no ESPN? What if you have to pal around with Uncle Bob?
ESPN has had a rough year with layoffs and this and that and the other thing. There's been digital controversies and the like. We all know what the UFC demographic is and suffice to say, chances are the UFC demographics are the same ones that seem to be turning off ESPN at a breakneck pace.  Or maybe that's just speculation. There seems to be a fullness to the ESPN schedule as a whole; notably with Top Rank and Glory kickboxing taking up spots on the combat sports side plus Golden Boy promotions is there as well. It also doesn't help that the UFC runs on nights where basically every competitive sports brand on ESPN runs. It's not like ESPN is gonna push the NBA or college football out of a 10 PM slot to accomodate for the UFC product. Lastly we can't ignore the obvious; Bob Arum and Oscar De La Hoya are both in bed with ESPN and it seems like Dana White especially has a bee in his bonnet about both guys. It's nothing the good of business can't solve but it has to be acknowledged.
NBC Sports
Good- Like Fox but better?
A deal with NBC Sports would fall on the side of "intriguing but really just kind of being like Fox" if you think about it. The UFC could get 4 shows on NBC, a bunch of shows on NBC Sports but with the added caveat of having shows on NBC's digital platform. IF you're looking to dabble in a digital partner, NBC Sports seems like a pretty decent one to want to dabble with.
Bad- Like Fox but really not?
NBC Sports, to my knowledge, is not quite on the same level as Fox. Whereas FS1 has football, soccer and baseball, NBC Sports really just had its hands it hockey, the EPL and golf. Maybe they get the occasional college football game from time to time?  I cannot imagine that golf and horseracing will appeal to the UFC audience no matter how old it gets. NBC Sports averaged about 1.4 million viewers last year but those were boosted by massive NHL playoff numbers. It just feels like the third brand for MMA behind ESPN and FS1.
Turner Sports
Good- Something new and something different
By now the scribes have already detailed what the plan would be. The UFC would align with superpower AT&T to become apart of the Turner Sports family. They'd be a major player for their digital platform/budding streaming service, be on TruTV and Direct TV would have a major hand in the UFC's PPV scene. It seems like of all the networks, this is the one that has an actual plan for trying to maximize it's investment. Maybe the UFC even could get a hit or two on TBS or TNT along the way?
Bad- TruTV
I like TruTv----but let's be real. The UFC spent the last seven years being in bed with a major TV network and building up a sports network. To go from that to being tasked with building up TruTV as a sports network would be....bad. A step backwards on the grandest scale. To go from NFL lead ins to Impractical Jokers lead ins would do little to repair the reputation of the sport as, ya know, an actual sport. It'd be like going from the Big-10 to the MAC.  YOu'd also lose a major network (there is no FOX or NBC to do those 3 million peak numbers) so you'd be relegated to not much really.
Amazon/Netflix/Youtube/Oath
Good- Ahead of the curve
We are quite possibly/probably seeing the degradation of the modern TV formula. Things are shifting, audiences tastes are changing and the problem is determining whether or not TV can be saved. Amazon, Youtube, Netflix and Oath are all talking to the UFC and all represent a step towards a streaming service. Chances are that the UFC would secure a big digital deal, possibly without a block on shopping th eproduct elsewhere for traditional means.
Bad- Limited Appeal
We saw what the average NFL game on TV does. The average NFL game on Amazon did about 350K viewers. An article recently discussed how little live content gets consumed on streaming sites compared to traditional television. I believe the PFL claims it maxed out at around 185K viewers for its free on youtube stream for charity. The audience for digital streaming is not quite there yet so the money isn't going to be quite there. Also does the UFC need a more obscure TV partner? What does a deal with a streaming service do for MMA over the long haul?

Limbaugh: RNC Was About Saving America from a Race War Democrats Actively Trying to Promote
During his nationally syndicated show on Friday, conservative talker Rush Limbaugh discussed the Republican National Convention held earlier in the week and how it compared to the Democratic National Convention in a prerecorded message he made as he recovers from an infection.
Limbaugh gave President Donald Trump and the RNC high marks but said the DNC was being used by Democrats to be divisive.
One of the elements Limbaugh praised about the RNC was the push for inclusiveness, and argued Democrats were promoting racial hostilities.
Partial transcript as follows (courtesy of RushLimbaugh.com):
LIMBAUGH: We can rest assured that this is the case, having watched it last night. I saw people complaining. The Fox News people were complaining that the speech was too long, 70 minutes. Let me tell you: If anybody has earned the right to take as much time as he wants to explain himself, it’s Donald Trump. The man has been slandered and libeled multiple times a day every day for four years.
He has been unfairly criticized. He’s been lied about. He has been the subject of a search-and-destroy campaign. And this entire week the Republican National Convention has been a focused period of time for Trump and his administration to tell their story, and if it took him 70 minutes last night to do it, fine and dandy. They say, “Well, y’ know, he didn’t see to have a whole lot of energy out there.”
He was not going to win, no matter what he did. If he’d done Trump at a rally, they’d have said he wasn’t presidential. If he had gone out and been really tough and called Biden a bunch of names, they would have said, “He’s not presidential! He’s not taking it seriously.” So last night I thought he was actually really good. The only thing that upset me about it going long was people were falling asleep in the Eastern Time Zone and missing some of it.
I thought it was exactly what was called for. It was calm. It was assuring. And you know something else? Remember the prepublicity on all this. The prepublicity was, “Trump was gonna come out, he was gonna fire on all cylinders, and he was gonna be ripping Biden and Kamala Harris a new one,” and that’s not what we got last night.
We got a guy who was self-assured, who was confident. I couldn’t tell when he was on the prompter and when he wasn’t. He was funny in a deadpan, slow-stated or downplayed kind of way — and he was unthreatening. You know, the prepublicity on this was, “Well, this guy, he’s going to come out firing both barrels! You better be prepared! He’s going to launch everything.” It wasn’t that way at all.
It was calm, it was reasoned — and for those watching Trump to learn a little bit about him, there wasn’t anything about it that was threatening.
Look, folks, I also have some other observations about things that have happened while I’ve been away. I want to take the opportunity here of this occasion just to get some of those thoughts in, in preparation for my return to the Golden EIB Microphone on Monday. I loved Ivanka’s speech last night. One line particularly stood out: “Washington didn’t change my father. My father changed Washington.”
Boy, is that true. It is right-on-the-money true, and it continues to be the case, and it explains why they continue — in the establishment, deep state, whatever — to be so outraged and indignant and irrational. They’re incapable of being rational when Trump is around, precisely because he is changing where they live. He’s changing where they work.
Now, can I remind you of something? And I took a lot of heat for this. I said last week that the Democrat challenge was going to be to find a way to renege on the debates, and everybody — blogosphere, pundits, and people on cable news — said, “Limbaugh is off his rocker! He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. Of course there’s going to be debates!
“There’s going to be three debates. Biden is assuring everybody there’s going to be debates,” and what happened? Nancy Pelosi … Stop and think of this, folks. Nancy Pelosi comes out and says, “I would not legitimize a conversation with him.” Now, she’s clearly laying the groundwork for Biden not to have to debate, and she wouldn’t have done that without the Biden campaign’s knowledge of it.
The idea she’s out there shooting from the hip? I guess it’s possible because it’s Pelosi. She may be trying to manipulate things because I’ll tell you something else going on out there, folks. You know, internal polls for politicians don’t lie. The polls that they do that they report to you and me — like take your pick of any poll. Those polls, as you well know, are made to shape public opinion, not reflect it.
But internal polls, like the Trump campaign internal polls or the Biden internal polls? They’re not lying to themselves in those polls — and those polls must be bad. I saw a poll, and I can’t remember the name of it right now. Let me find it real quick. (shuffling papers) Black Lives Matter in Wisconsin’s popularity has gone from plus-25 to zero in two months. Oh, yeah. It was a tweet here from noted hate expert Jonathan Chait.
“Democrats need to be extremely concerned about what’s happening in Wisconsin, where support for BLM has gone from +25 to +0 in 2 months.” In Wisconsin! It’s happening all over the place, and by now I’m sure you’ve all heard that CNN anchors are warning, “Oh, we gotta get serious. We got to talk about the rioting. The focus group data looks bad. The polling data looks bad.”
Oh, so now it’s not about saving lives, not about saving property. Now that all this is starting to hurt the Democrats, now they’ve got to start talking about it? But these internal polls must be bad. They don’t lie in these internal polls. Biden … Did you notice yesterday he didn’t just leave the basement; he went up a floor? He went to the living room. He went up to where there’s a fireplace — in August.
Kamala Harris emerged from whatever hovel she was living in to come out and tell a bunch of whoppers about Trump, and I think the fact that these polls — the internal polls in the Biden campaign — are bad can be seen in the Biden campaign’s activity. Here’s a New York Times story: “How Chaos in Kenosha Is Already Swaying Some Voters in Wisconsin,” and there’s a quote from somebody here.
“Ellen Ferwerda, who owns an antique furniture store downtown just blocks from the worst of the destruction that is now closed, said … Democratic leaders seemed hesitant to condemn the mayhem. ‘I think they just don’t know what to say.'” Uh, if you don’t know what to say about rioters, if you don’t know what to say about people that are destroying your town, then it’s obvious you don’t know what to do about it, either.
Bruce Arians, the head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. You know, a lot of these players — NFL, NBA, NHL — decided to not practice or cancel a bunch of games because of the shooting in Kenosha, and Bruce Arians, the coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, said, “I don’t know that protest is an action. I think each guy has a personal thing.
Already people in the sports media are outraged that he would say this, that “the Boston Tea Party was protest.” No, it was action. It was much more than just marching up and down the street or carrying a bunch of signs or looting and destroying other people’s property. There is a big difference between action and protest. What he was really saying was (summarized):
“Canceling practice — not practicing football one day — is not going to change anything you claim to be in favor of. It’s not going to matter a whit,” and so — he didn’t say this; I will — they’re getting away with engaging in a bunch of symbolism while not having to engage in any genuine substance.
Folks, a couple of other things here that I want to delve into. I actually believe… I saw a little note from Glenn Reynolds at Instapundit. Actually, there were some major things happening this week that I haven’t heard anybody say. Now, that doesn’t mean nobody has, because I haven’t been able to listen to everything. But I look at the Republican convention.
It’s been the most diverse political convention I’ve ever seen, including Democrat conventions. And as I’ve watched it, it has occurred to me that Trump isn’t just running for reelection. The story that is being told at the Republican National Convention is about saving America. It’s about saving America from a race war that the Democrats are out there actively trying to promote. They’re trying to foment it.
They want this country to be black versus white, immigrant versus native, male versus female. That’s what they want. They want that chaos. They want this constant us-versus-them aspect of daily life. And Trump is making it clear that he’s interested in people who are constructive, productive, generally happy. He’s not interested in parasites, the generally miserable.
He wants everybody to join in this project of making America great again, to restoring America’s greatness where we had contentment and happiness, and people sought happiness. The fact that all of that is controversial still amazes me. But I think it’s an… If you look at the Republican convention, it is astounding, the understory, or some of the themes underneath the surface that are, I think, extremely powerful.
There’s another thing, folks, that is undeniable, and that is the Republican Party is no longer the party of the McCains or the Bushes or the Romneys or take your pick. I mean, or the Koch brothers, all the big donors and so forth. This is clearly a Republican Party now that is Donald Trump’s, and he’s got 92 to 95% Republican loyalty.
It’s one of the most amazing transformations of a political party, and it’s taken place in less than three years. At this convention, George W. Bush was nowhere to be found. None of the old Republican elders. Romney was nowhere to be found. Not that they wanted to be there, but that’s the point. So I just… I think that there is a lot, folks, to be optimistic about, particularly if President Trump wins.
(alarm chime)
Oops! There’s my timer telling me that my time is up, but it’s not up. I gave myself a couple of extra seconds here. It is an opportunity for an upbeat, positive nature among all of us. This week has been very eye-opening for me. It’s been a very bad week, and yet it has ended for me feeling inspired and upbeat and really confident about the future of our country if President Trump is reelected. I believe the opposite is true if he’s not.

Making a Video Game Hero: Sports Edition
May 29, 2020 1:00 PM EST
Our latest Making a Video Game Hero series takes to the digital sports arenas around the world as we strive to create the best athlete.
Thus far, these lists have been relatively easy to put together. After all, whether you’re platforming in 2D or 3D, you’re still jumping around. Action-adventure is a little murkier, but even there, you basically know what you’re getting yourself into. However, when trying to build the ultimate sports game star, we ran into some obvious difficulties.
What sport are you playing? How do you possibly weigh the difference between a silky smooth jumper and a devastating stiff arm? We decided to just do the best we could to build the Bo Jackson of virtual sports. Except without, ya know, the crippling hip injuries that will derail his career before it really gets started.
So, what does this monstrosity of bulging muscles, computer-like intelligence, and boyish charm look like? Well, give our creation a look below, and be sure to let us know why we’re wrong in the comments below. And remember, the only rule is we can only use one character per game entry. Otherwise, this would just be all Backyard Sports characters.
Brain: Pablo Sanchez (Backyard Sports) Runners’ Up: Tom Brady (Madden NFL 09), Tiger Woods (Tiger Woods PGA Tour 14)
Tom Brady in Madden NFL 09 is the football savant’s most cerebral version. While his arm skills are worth salivating over, it’s the star’s mind that makes him one of the all-time greats. And while he lost that season in real life due to injury, his virtual counterpart tore up the NFL with reckless abandon.
Likewise, there aren’t many athletes that possess the same killer instincts that Tiger Woods had in his heyday. While we can argue over which video game version is his best, you can’t tell us there’s a virtual player who dominates with their brain and brawn more than Tiger did.
However, our ultimate choice is Pablo Sanchez from the Backyard Sports series. Look at the young lad. If you’re on the playground and selecting your first pick for any sport based on appearances, Pablo is one of the last kids you pick. He’s short. He’s got a potbelly. Heck, he even pretends like he can’t speak English, tossing in an unneeded communication gap for literally no reason. But then you see him on the field.
Regardless of the sport, Pablo Sanchez is, in action, the most dominant athlete in the video game sports world. He is good at everything. Literally everything. That talent has to come from somewhere, and it’s definitely not his 8-year-old beer gut. He’s like that kid in intramurals who was a stud in high school but came to college wanting to party more than practice and got kicked off the football team. Now he looks out of shape, but if you give him a sliver of lane, he’ll still dunk all over you. Not that that specific situation ever happened to me, or anything.
Put that propensity to be great in a genetically superior body and you have something truly scary on your hands.
Tumblr media
Eyes: Vladimir Guerrero (MVP Baseball 2005) Runners’ Up: Barry Sanders (Madden NFL 99), Kobe Bryant (NBA Live 2005)
Barry Sanders is one of the best to ever lace up. What set him apart from other running backs was not just his other-worldly body control that let him slip away from would-be tacklers, but his vision to find a sliver of daylight where no one else could. Plus, he was the subject of one of the best video game commercials of all time.
Kobe, on the other hand, had that locked-in glare that made opponents whither late in games. The Black Mamba was one of the most intimidating players in the NBA. When he got serious, you knew you were in for a show.
However, our choice for eyes is Vladimir Guerrero. Vlad never saw a pitch he couldn’t hit. Just watch some of the garbage he’s able to get a hold of in this video. And, in MVP Baseball 2005, the man was absolutely dominant. Manny Rameriz gives him a run for his money, but Vlad is certifiably that dude. He hit pitches off the ground, for goodness sakes!
Tumblr media
Mouth: Michael Jordan (NBA 2K11) Runners’ Up: The Announcer (NBA Hangtime), Quentin Sands (Blitz: The League)
Please tell us you’ve watched The Last Dance by now. For sports fans, it is must-watch TV. Like, take a break from reading this, flip to another tab, and enjoy 10 hours of some top-tier content. Now that you’ve seen it, you know that MJ isn’t just the greatest basketball player ever. He’s also a truly next-level trash talker.
Sure, if our abomination had the booming voice of the Hangtime announcer, he’d be fun to hang out with. And, Quentin Sands certainly knows how to talk some junk. That said, Jordan takes it to a different universe. While some are going to say we’re wasting our Jordan slot on his mouth, others will remember he allegedly killed a man’s whole career just by talking to him. Ruthless.
Tumblr media
Torso: Jadeveon Clowney (NCAA Football 14) Runners’ Up: Dante Culpepper (Madden NFL 06), Karl Malone (NBA Jam)
Dante Culpepper in Madden NFL 06 was an absolute hoss: impossible to bring down in the backfield and nearly unstoppable once he got up to speed on scrambles. His insane power would make for an excellent base for our monster.
Likewise, the Mailman was a force in NBA Jam. His defense and dunking were off the charts, making him the perfect counterpick when your friend inevitably selected Scottie Pippen and Horace Grant.
However, neither of those characters were inspired by this kind of real-world performance. That hit from Clowney might be the greatest hit anyone has ever laid out in any football game ever. Best of all, his NCAA Football 14 counterpart is capable of the same type of backfield destruction. Good gravy.
Tumblr media
Left Arm: Ken Griffey Jr. (The Ken Griffey series) Runners’ Up: Michael Vick (Madden NFL 2004), Mike Tyson (Fight Night Round 4)
Some will probably balk at having Mike Vick’s arm as the option over his legs. That said, the sheer power that his Madden NFL 2004 character was able to generate essentially made EA rewrite the game’s defense for Madden NFL 2005 to compensate. The things he could do in that game were downright silly.
Another potentially surprising inclusion that comes due to our one character per game rule is Mike Tyson. While his turn in Punch-Out!! is legendary, we’re saving that game for something else. Iron Mike’s left arm is earth-shattering in the real and virtual worlds. Watch him throw punches as a 52-year-old man and then imagine taking one of those to the dome in his prime. No thanks!
But, for our money, we’re getting Griffey. If you were a ‘90s kid, there wasn’t a more lovable baseball star than Ken Griffey Jr. He has four different video games with his name on them and is among the best in every single one of them. We’d probably go with his Slugfest version, but you’re welcome to your preference. Regardless, there isn’t a left-arm we want more than The Kid’s.
Right Arm: Waluigi (Mario Tennis) Runners’ Up: Steph Curry (NBA 2K20), Scott Stevens (NHL Hitz 2002)
Steph Curry might just be the best pure shooter in NBA history. His touch from beyond the arc is without equal in the modern game and he makes full-court shots look routine. And Scott Stevens had one of the meanest right hooks in NHL Hitz. If you got into a fight with the New Jersey Devils’ man, you already knew the knockout was coming. But we can do better than either of those.
Waluigi was created in a vat at Nintendo for Mario Tennis. And, to this day, Nintendo refuses to allow him to take his talents to anything other than side games. They’re too scared to see what Waluigi could do to their poster boy in a mainline Mario video game.
We’re not afraid though. Instead, we’ll use what Nintendon’t and graft the best Wa brother’s arm onto our monster, turning his right arm into a machine of sports prowess.
Tumblr media
Legs: Devin Hester (Madden NFL 08) Runners’ Up: Didier Drogba (FIFA World Cup 2010), Tony Hawk (Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3)
Excuse the potato quality, but watch this rocket Drogba delivers from almost the centerline in FIFA World Cup 2010. Sure, it’s on a lower difficulty, but the power that the man from the Ivory Coast possessed in that video game was astounding.
Tony Hawk brings a bit more finesse to the party. His level of control with his feet baffles the mind. Later games would let him do more with the board, but THPS3 is the series’ pinnacle. It’s the Hawkman at his best.
However, Devin Hester is the first Madden player to get 100 speed. Seeing him line up for a return caused grown men and women to immediately wet their pants. He was absolutely a game-changer in Madden NFL 08, and we had to include him here.
Tumblr media
Mentor: Doc Louis (Punch-Out!!) Runners’ Up: Bo Jackson (Tecmo Super Bowl), Stretch (NBA Street)
Sports aren’t just about your own personal skills. You need someone to teach you how to be great. Jordan had Phil Jackson. Brady had Bill Belicheck. Even an early prodigy like Cristiano Ronaldo needed a top-class manager in Alex Ferguson to completely bring out his visionary skill.
And so, our creation needs his own mentor. While we considered going with an all-time great player like Bo Jackson or an old-timer who still has it in Stretch, we ultimately went with Doc Louis.
After all, if he can take that chump Little Mac and teach him how to beat the video game version of Mike Tyson, imagine what he can do for our hulking behemoth. Our creation will not only outplay his competition but with Doc Louis’ help, he’ll outwit them too.
So there you have it. Our third video game creation is finished. Are there any changes you’d like to see? If so, let us know about them in the comments. And check back soon for our next dive into the wonderful world of human body modification. It’s sure to be a doozy.

BACK TO THE THEATER..OR NOT
So movies are trying to claw their way back into theaters, and I for one am all for it. I don’t want to be a prisoner of this virus until vaccines are created and distributed. Wonder Woman 1984 has set a new date to be released this Christmas, 2020, and I get the feeling that some other big blockbusters will be jointing her.
So many summer blockbusters were shelved, we are definitely going to be having our pick of the liter when things open up again. I think the theater business will be booming for quite a while.
For the movies that have been released, like Mulan and Tenet – the news is good and bad. Mulan was released in America through Disney+, but it was released in China to the theaters. China is the second biggest draw for movies after the USA, so Disney was hopeful to make money on both ends, and see which one came out on top. So far, for Mulan, it looks like a tie.
Streamer usually pay off about 25 – 30 million for a movie for a restricted viewing experience. Mulan made less then that in it’s opening weekend in China. China box office came out to be around 20 million in it’s first three days in theaters. Now will it make more, sure – but the number will surely drop and it’s not going to get dramatically higher in any sense. The final prediction for Mulan in China is about 40 million over all. Not great, but then again, this is not America. Should Disney have waited? Well their slate is kind of full of movies already waiting, so maybe this is the one they decided to test the waters with, who knows. It was a gamble and it was not a complete disaster, but it wasn’t exactly a success either.
Tenet is another movie that is being tested. Christopher Nolan is all high and mighty with his films and he always dresses and suits and he never lets people sit down and blah blah. Well Warner Bros and Sony are keeping the film’s numbers a secret.
Apparently they are not releasing numbers by the day, but rather by the week, so no one knows if Tenet is slumping, staying the course or increasing. I’m sure they wish to keep the shroud of excellence wrapped around Nolan for as long as possible – but industry insiders say Tenet maybe falling and falling hard.
NFL DIPS AND DABS
The NFL saw a dip in their ratings this week – down about 13 percent from last year’s opening kickoff game. Researchers say there is nothing to worry about – since NBA, NHL, and US Open are all happening at the same time, and MLB is about to go into their playoffs – fans have a lot more sports than they can handle right now.
BRUISED TERRIFFIED HALLE BERRY
The gorgeous and talented Halle Berry has made her directorial debut with a movie called Bruised that is making it’s world premiere in the Toronto Film Festival. “I was scared shitless. And if you’re not having any sense of worry, I don’t think you care, I don’t think you want to do your very best” Halle said to reporters.
In Bruised, Berry plays a disgraced MMA fighter, Jackie “Justice,” who has to conquer her own demons and face one of the fiercest rising stars of the MMA world to become the mother that she thinks her son Manny deserves. That role isn’t the first dark horse character that Berry has played during her Hollywood career, which includes her Oscar-winning role of Leticia Musgrove, a dirt-poor widow, in Monster’s Ball.
“You know I’m always most drawn to characters who are fractured, broken, who are fighting to survive. Every time I get to play those roles, I get to have a cathartic experience and I get to have some healing for myself,” Berry explained.Despite the cachet an Academy Award trophy brought to her Hollywood career, Berry says there’s sadness in not seeing other Black women follow her and win the industry’s biggest best actress prize. “Every time when Oscar time comes round, I get reflective and I think maybe this year, maybe this year, and it’s heartbreaking that other women haven’t stood there,” she revealed.
BILL MAHR BACK IN STUDIO
Bill Mahr is moving from his backyard and headed back into his studio for the first time in months. “There’s real people. Thank you jesus. Thank You People!!” he exclaimed. The show is filmed in CBS Television City’s Studio 33. HBO is bring back only 25 people for now, to be in the audience, but Bill says that will be loud enough. “This is interesting, you can hear people laugh individually.” The host said.
QUENTIN TARANTINO VS BRUCE LEE
Jason Scott Lee has become the foremost expert on the immortal Bruce Lee and has spoken out, as so many have, on how Quentin Tarantino decided to portray the martial arts legend.
Jason is known for being the boy in Jungle Book, for playing Bruce Lee in Dragon and currently the villain in the new rendition of Mulan. When confronted about what he thought about Tarantino’s Bruce Lee fighting Brad Pitt in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood – he certainly had a strong opinion about it.
One of Lee’s most memorable roles is that of the aforementioned Bruce Lee in 1993’s Dragon, which is based on the book by Bruce’s widow, Linda Lee Cadwell. Since he did rigorous martial arts training with Bruce’s former student Jerry Poteet, Lee developed even more respect for the revered martial artist he was playing. So, needless to say, Lee, like Bruce’s daughter, Shannon, wasn’t too pleased with Quentin Tarantino’s portrayal of Bruce in 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
“While I was training [to play Bruce Lee], I started learning his system of fighting and actually feeling the motions that he taught his students. I realized so much about the precision and the discipline of a person like that, and that’s why it was very hard for me to watch that scene with Mike Moh portraying Bruce,” Lee admits. “Granted, Mike’s a great actor, but I think being put in that position to portray Bruce Lee that way was really hard to take. I kind of winced. Yeah, he was boastful, but he was one of those guys that could back it up. He wasn’t challenging that way, you know? So [Tarantino] took a lot of creative leeway in presenting Bruce Lee in that manner, and he got a lot of flack for it. And it’s not justified the way he did it.”
Lee also mentions that Poteet, who became his longtime sifu after Dragon, would have objected to Tarantino’s depiction since he had a close master-apprentice relationship with Bruce.
“My sifu, Jerry Poteet, who was a student of Bruce, has since passed away, but I know he would be rolling over in his grave,” Lee explains. “He had direct association through a long term teacher-student relationship with Bruce… So, through the years of knowing Jerry and hearing all the stories and details, I’m sure it would’ve pissed him off.”
This scene will not just go away. Like I have said before, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood is a love story between Tarantino and Brad Pitt. Tarantino wrote the most amazing, awe inspiring, coolest character for Brad and even made him beat up Bruce Lee. Cmon. We all know a washed up stunt man could never ever even touch Bruce Lee in his prime while he was filming Green Hornet. I think everyone is realizing this now and really taking offense to it. If Tarantino made the martial arts character anyone else in the world, but Bruce Lee – it would have been fine. Bruce Lee took his fighting extremely serious and like Jason said, he boasted, but he always backed it up – the guy was a certified martial arts champion and revolutionary. Anyway – don’t get me started. I’m glad the professionals agree with me as well on this. Tarantino went a bit overboard in his cinematic love letter to Brad Pitt.
THE END OF THE KARDASHIANS
Yes after 20 blissful years on the E Network, “Keeping Up With The Kardashians” is airing it’s final season in early 2021. The choice was made by the family and announced recently. “It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to ‘Keeping Up with the Kardashians,’” the famous family said in a joint statement, signed by Kris Jenner, Kourtney Kardashian, Khloé Kardashian, Kim, Rob Kardashian, Kendall Jenner, Kylie Jenner and Scott Disick.
“After what will be 14 years, 20 seasons, hundreds of episodes and several spin-off shows, we’ve decided as a family to end this very special journey. We are beyond grateful to all of you who’ve watched us for all of these years — through the good times, the bad times, the happiness, the tears, and the many relationships and children. We’ll forever cherish the wonderful memories and countless people we’ve met along the way.”
20 years is a lot. I mean, a lot. Hopefully this will end Kanye West’s craziness and Kim’s craziness and all the other crap that happens with this family. I mean let’s face it, they weren’t a bunch of intellectuals. They have so many sources of income the show’s salary probably became their lunch money by now. This kind of reality show was a guilty pleasure and really wasn’t doing society any bit of good. Kanye got a God complex, and Kim thought she could be a lawyer of all things.
I am glad this is ending, America has been in a weird kind of fantasy state and had rejected reality for too long. Problem is, someone like Paris Hilton will probably step in and take their place.
Catch me here every Thursday. Have a great week!  @paulieb2003

Alex Rodriguez has been accused of steroid use

FanSided’s 12 Days of Christmas
Photo by Brian Rothmuller/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images
Nobody wants birds. Here are FanSided’s 12 Days of Christmas, in accordance with the gifts our favorite sports and movies have given us this holiday season.
As Andrew Bernard learned the hard way, most of the gifts given in the famous “12 Days of Christmas” are just birds. In fact, if there are any wealthy bird fanatics out there who could afford it, giving your loved one the actual 12 Days of Christmas would amount to 184 birds in total. Nobody wants 184 birds for Christmas.
In light of this undeniable truth, our FanSided staff decided to get together and examine the real gifts our favorite sports and movies have given us this holiday season.
From college football to the NFL and NBA to the entertainment industry and beyond, we proudly present FanSided’s 12 Days of Christmas!
On the first day of Christmas, college football gave to me: a competent LSU quarterback
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow came out of nowhere this year to win the Heisman Trophy and lead the Tigers to the College Football Playoff. He’s the SEC record-holder for yards and touchdowns in a season and easily the best quarterback in LSU history. Then again, the bar was so low you could reach it without standing up. LSU quarterbacks have always held the team back and got Les Miles fired. This year was different, as Burrow was the best present LSU fans could have asked for. — Patrick Schmidt
On the second day of Christmas, the UFC gave to me: two Baddest Motherf–kers in the game
We have been so good this year and as a tasty reward, the UFC gave the fans something it wanted so much: a real Baddest Motherf–ker title, complete with its own belt at the biggest fight card of the year. Jorge Masvidal faced off with Nate Diaz to crown the official BMF in the UFC and when the dust finally settled, we saw Masvidal with the strap around his waste and a potential second BMF fight for next year … and his opponent might be none other than Nate’s big brother, Nick. — Amy Kaplan
On the third day of Christmas, the NFL gave to me: an understanding of what a catch is
The NFL has long been flummoxed when trying to describe what a completed catch is in the rule book. No NFL fan or pundit could be given a better gift than making this a simple rule that was obvious in real time. Commissioner Roger Goodell comes through. — Matt Verderame
On the fourth day of Christmas, college football gave to me: four playoff teams
Four is the magic number when it comes to the college football postseason. LSU, Ohio State, Clemson and TK make the field this year. It’s the first time Alabama has not made the College Football Playoff, so that’s a gift right there if you’ve suffered from Alabama fatigue the last few years. — Patrick Schmidt
On the fifth day of Christmas, the NHL gave to me: five head coaches fired
The NHL is in a bit of turmoil as the holiday season rolls around. Between poor performances and a coaching abuse scandal that is rocking the foundation of the sport, the NHL has seen five head coaches relieved of their duties in just a few weeks. Watch out, your team may be next! — Mary Clarke
On the sixth day of Christmas, Hollywood gave to me: six feet of Adam Driver.
With The Report and Marriage Story already out, fall 2019 has been Adam Driver season and it all culminates in the release of Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. The internet loves talking about Driver — Is he a good actor? Is he hot? Or is he just distractingly tall? From movies to memes, all six-feet(-two) of Adam Driver is the gift that keeps on giving. — Shea Corrigan
On the seventh day of Christmas, Luka Doncic gave to me: seven(ty-seven) marks of perfection
Seven is considered the perfect number, so it’s no wonder Luka Doncic wears two of them on his jersey. No. 77 on the Dallas Mavericks was already likable, and exactly no one should be surprised what he’s doing given how much he accomplished as a professional overseas before coming to the NBA, but his production at age 20 is literally unprecedented. Averaging 29.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 8.9 assists per game is flirting with triple-double territory that only Russell Westbrook and Oscar Robertson have ever ventured into for a full season, but he’s doing it on 61.8 percent true shooting as the primary reason the Mavs own the best offense in the league and a 19-10 record. Also, guess how many triple-doubles he had on the season? Not seven, but eight, literally one-upping perfection. Luka Doncic is incredibly fun to watch, easy to root for and right now, he’s the spirit of Christmas embodied on a basketball court. That spirit is perfect, and it wears two No. 7s across the chest. — Gerald Bourguet
On the eighth day of Christmas, in my nightmares Tom Hooper gave to me: eight stars as cats in Cats.
There are more than eight cats in the movie Cats (I Googled it) but there are eight legitimate stars — full-on award-winning, chart-topping movie and/or pop stars — donning the most deranged catsuits/fur technology you will ever see in Tom Hooper’s “musical fantasy” adaptation. (They are Idris Elba, Taylor Swift, Ian McKellen, Rebel Wilson, James Corden, Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson and Jason DeRulo.) — Shea Corrigan
On the ninth day of Christmas, the Phoenix Suns gave to me: (hopefully!) turning the corner on nine years of misery
The Phoenix Suns haven’t been to the playoffs since 2010 (the second-longest active playoff drought in the NBA), they haven’t won 30 games since 2015, and even mentioning the names of draft whiffs like Josh Jackson, Marquese Chriss or Dragan Bender is enough to make the most diehard of supporters wince. But for the first time in Devin Booker’s career, he’s got NBA-caliber teammates and a legitimate head coach. The result? Career-best efficiency for Book, a Suns team that’s 11-19 despite facing one of the league’s hardest schedules and missing Deandre Ayton for all but two games, and a shot at finally taking the first step in a prolonged rebuild. This fanbase has continually been put through the ringer, but between having an actual point guard in Ricky Rubio, Kelly Oubre’s Valley Boyz wave and Aron Baynes filling in for the suspended Ayton, the Suns are taking their first step toward legitimacy by simply competing. Maybe the playoffs won’t happen after a hot start raised expectations, especially during a seven-game losing streak, but even cracking 30-35 wins would be encouraging. — Gerald Bourguet
On the 10th day of Christmas, soccer gave to me: a 10-point lead that Liverpool surely can’t let slip this time, right?
Sure, it would be nice for our true love to deliver us a compelling Premier League title race like we saw last season, but in the absence of that, we get to watch a buzzsaw Liverpool team that looks absolutely determined to snap the storied club’s 30-year league title drought. The Reds lead the Premier League by 10 points (with a game in hand) at Christmas. Of all teams though, Liverpool won’t be assuming it’s over, after they blew a Christmas lead last season. And the Ghosts of Christmas Past run even deeper since, via Opta “each of the last three sides to fail to win the title after being top at Christmas have all been the Reds (2008-09, 2013-14 and 2018-19).” For Liverpool fans, this could be the year they finally win the Premier League, and for us neutrals, we get to watch them hold their breath and see if maybe they can become the next Invincibles in the process. — John Wilkinson
On the 11th day of Christmas, the NFL gave to me: awesome young quarterbacks
After what feels like a century of Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Drew Brees and Ben Roethlisberger, the league is finally churning the mix. Patrick Mahomes, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson and others are leading the way, ushering in what should be the standard for 15 years moving forward. More athleticism, more excitement and more possibilities. Great stuff. — Matt Verderame
On the 12th day of Christmas, MLB gave to me: So, so, so many presents because free agents are actually getting signed before Christmas
After a frigid market last winter left the top free agents unsigned through the holidays (and well beyond), it was refreshing to see big-ticket items Stephen Strasburg, Gerrit Cole and Anthony Rendon go off the board this December. Now, as we wait to see if contending teams open the checkbook for mid-level free agents too, let’s hope we can find a way onto the gift-giving list of those three. — John Wilkinson

Crash Course Soccer: Why should you love soccer?
Tumblr media
Why should you love soccer? As I put together the two accompanying graphics explaining the broad strokes of soccer I thought about this question. A few months ago I wrote an open letter with all your swears and what not ranting about how awesome the sport is. Here I thought I would lay it out a little less emphatically. I’ve been pondering why I love soccer for a longtime since I myself got back into the sport in 2016. I say “got back into soccer” because I had sorta been raised on it. My dad took me to Rochester Rhinos games since the dawn of that team. That practice dropped off as the 2000s went on and my most tangible memories of soccer are the quadrennial get togethers my family had around the World Cup. Soccer brings my family together. My sisters played varsity while I only went as far as U8 soccer as an elementary schooler.
My sports viewing life begins and ends with the Buffalo Sabres. I am a huge hockey fan and I know the NHL front and back. Even though it’s been more or less a decade of torment for us Sabres fans I still watched NHL hockey. The NHL after all is the greatest hockey league in the world simply by virtue of the talent that finds its way into that league. The same is generally true across NFL, NBA, MLB and even a handful of other sports. We are very blessed as Americans to have easy access to some of the best sports in the world. The first thing you may need to overcome in loving soccer is that this is simply not true with any North American soccer league: the best players simply don’t play in Major League Soccer or even the top Mexican Soccer league, Liga MX.
But I’m not going to spring graphics and comparisons on you just yet. First we have to talk about why sports are entertaining. I’m going to do some toddler stuff here so bear with me: NFL football is run-crash-boom entertaining. NBA basketball is dodge-jump-swish entertaining. MLB baseball is click-rush-slide exciting. NHL hockey is crash-deke-pop exciting. That little exercise is meant to evoke the feelings of watching a game in one of those leagues. Each sport is very different not just in rules and goals, but in what is exciting about the sport itself. I struggle to come up with a similar onomatopoeia series for soccer… I guess it would be kick-swirl-sing but that seems stupid compared to the others. I love soccer for the game itself, but the experience of soccer is on a whole different level. I say that because Soccer functions differently in a lot of ways. The culture of soccer isn’t just supplemental like the culture around some other sports you maybe familiar with; in soccer the culture around the team is instrumental.
I’m not going to attempt to seduce you into liking soccer with pretty goals or strategic formations or even dazzle you with the much higher number of team trophies you can win in most soccer leagues. That’s what the neat graphics I put together are for. No, for what soccer lacks in having A+ talent on this continent it makes up for with fan participation. Fan participation in soccer is bar none the best you’ll find in sports. Yeah, I’ve seen the tailgates and heard the twelfth man cheers but I’m telling you it’s different; soccer fans are so empowered to participate they form supporters groups. These groups don’t just sing and cheer at games; they’re often a part of club branding, identity and in Germany for example, actual ownership of the clubs. Supporter Groups drive narrative in a way that simply has no comparison in the four big North American Sports leagues. The history of the soccer club is fundamentally intertwined with the history of its supporters. Unlike the generic nature of the twelfth man/#1 fan stuff here in North America supporters groups write the story more than the team itself even does. There’s a power in that. This power of supporters is amplified by promotion/relegation, but I’ll get to that in a minute.
I find the supporters group I’m a part of to be a better form of comradery than anything I can find in the NHL or certainly in football. Buffalo is known for its tailgating culture and I’ve participated in that; even that doesn’t compare with supporters groups. Ultimately that’s just something you need to experience but what I can tell you on this note is that there is something special about deciding which title you care most about your team winning: US Open Cup, MLS Cup or the Supporters Shield? Premier League title, FA Cup, or Champions League? There are three notable trophies in most soccer leagues and that is simply not the same in the four big sports of North America. That’s not to mention in most soccer leagues around the world there is promotion and relegation. That’s incredible. The thrill of potentially getting into a higher league for just being great at soccer, or on the other hand, the horror of being relegated to a lower league is profound. It really changes the way you look at the sport itself. My Buffalo Sabres would’ve never tanked in 2014-2015 if that would have got them relegated to the AHL. Moreover, any shmuck can start a club in the ninth division and have a route to compete on the biggest stage at the top-flight. I’m not telling you it happens all the time but that alone is incredible.
Soccer is the world’s sport. That’s not just true on a purely socio-economic level. Soccer, even in this country incorporates a cross section of humanity. Teams have people of many nationalities, skin colors, religions and orientations. While I can say the NHL skews toward white Canadians and white northern Europeans, there is just no way to talk about soccer that way. It is really the only sport that can claim to be for everyone in tangible, visible ways. That leads into my third big point: it is the single most accessible sport in the world. Promotion/Relegation makes access to open leagues egalitarian and even democratic as smaller towns and cities decide if they want to throw support behind a local startup. The materials to play soccer also make it accessible financially: in training you really don’t even need a goal you just need a ball. Moreover, no sport is easier to understand. That should really be the centerpiece of this article, but that onomatopoeia was just too fun an exercise.
You put the ball in the net, and you do it with your feet. That really is the just of it. Hockey is similarly straightforward and maybe you could say basketball is too but man, soccer is concise. I’d also venture to say outdoor sports with as little padding and player equipment as possible has a more authentic feel to it but that’s getting into the weeds and I don’t want to debate rugby with you. At the end of the day loving any sport is a subjective, personal choice. Before we wrap this up how about I share a personal story.
In 2017 I had been supporting Major League Soccer’s New York City Football Club for more than a year. Remember how I mentioned those Rochester Rhinos games I was brought to as a child? Well I had kept tabs on the Rhinos as far back as 2015 when they won the USL Cup. In spite of that title the outlook was not good in Rochester. Attendance had been waning for a decade after the MLS push failed. I was still salty about NYCFC bowing out of their playoffs in the semifinals when I got the news the Rhinos were going to go on hiatus. I was heartbroken. Normally hiatus is what comes before folding and I felt my split attention with a downstate club sucked away some of my support from the club that needed it more. The club that needed me more is still on hiatus. The Buffalo Sabres have broken my heart a lot but no sports heartbreak can compare to the Rochester Rhinos. I hope I can support them in a game again one day.
Anyway, buried somewhere in the paragraphs above is my reason for loving soccer. I hope I provided some insight for you to think about it. Once again, if you need some more help thinking about it check out the two graphics below. They are the actual “crash course” in soccer. Share this with a friend who you think might find it interesting. Maybe you’re trying to rope someone else into the sport. If you ever want to talk about it some more feel free to reach out to me @UttaroSports on twitter or right here on Tumblr. I love talking about the why of it all. I also love stories if you couldn’t tell. And if you’re interested in closer details on a specific club, oh well the Rhinos are at the front of my brain about 25% of my waking hours and 75% of my sleeping hours. I’d love to bring you into the Regulars. Either way…
Thanks for Reading.

Mike Missanelli Explains Why Nobody Talks About the Flyers
I totally missed this on Tuesday, but Flyers fans didn’t seem happy with Mike Missanelli. I saw some Twitter arguments and some scraps and scuffles here and there, but was not initially aware of the source.
They weren’t happy with Mike because he began his show by basically dismissing the Flyers’ eight-game winning streak before going on to explain why your team, your town, your Orange and Black aren’t worth talking about on 97.5 the Fanatic.
Mike opened Tuesday’s show with a primer, and said this, in part:
“Flyers fans do not understand why they are always put at the bottom of the pecking order, and they have a legitimate question. And only the people in this business can answer the question. And we’re going to try to answer that question today. The Flyers have won eight in a row and the kid saved 40 shots (Monday) night, right? 41. They beat the Canucks. I watched a lot of the game and the kid stood tall. Now, here’s the thing we are told in radio – play the hits. Right? We’re told to play the hits. People who play music, they have to play the songs that their audience likes most, because if they’re not playing those songs, they’ll switch the station. It’s the same thing with sports talk subjects. We have to try to figure out what is most interesting to the majority of the fan base to talk about…”
….
Here’s my theory; there are more natural basketball fans in this city than there are hockey fans, which leaves hockey, unfortunately, at the bottom of the pecking order, and when you’re talking about playing the hits, you gotta play the ones atop the pecking order. The Eagles are always atop the pecking order. We’ll talk about the Eagles today, the Wentz/Foles situation and how he answered this Philly Voice report. Then you go to the Sixers, the Sixers have taken over the #2 slot because they’re a good team, and that makes them talkable. The process was talkable in that they were pursuing these better players to build a foundation and get better. And so Flyers fans do have a legitimate beef… the fact of the matter is that there are just more basketball fans here than there are hockey fans.
Some thoughts, in no real order, after the jump:
We all know the ice hockey demographic is more suburban and more Caucasian than the basketball demographic. I don’t have numbers in front of me that explain how many people like basketball vs. hockey in Philadelphia, but national polls consistently have the NBA way out in front of the NHL.
The Sixers’ Process was interesting from a talk radio perspective because it was controversial and intriguing. It was new and different, and it caused a generational rift that resulted in some passionate arguments both for and against. It was perfect for sports talk radio.
The Flyers have just been sort of half-rebuilding and half-not-rebuilding. They have some great young players, but their rebuild was more traditional and less interesting than the Sixers.
The Eagles are #1 and always will be #1. The Phillies took over briefly from 2008 to 2012 or so, then Chip Kelly came in and the Phils fell off, giving the top spot back to the Eagles. We are all the Eagles’ bitch, whether we accept it or not.
The radio stations barely talk about baseball these days, so it’s not like Flyers fans are in some exclusive diss club. And when they do talk about baseball, it’s never about specifics, it’s macro topics like, “is the game too slow?” and “is Gabe Kapler a Philly guy?” Furthermore, try being a local soccer fan. We are barely even a blip on the radar.
Yes, radio stations always have to play the hits. 93.3 WMMR has been playing the same shit for 20 years now. It’s Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, a work force block of whatever the hell Pierre Robert wants to play, and that Jane’s Addiction song that I swear is only heard in Philadelphia.
Every media outlet I’ve ever worked for, the Eagles pay the bills. Eagles stories are #1 on Crossing Broad, they were #1 at Philly Voice, and they were #1 at CBS Philly. Traffic generated by other teams is not even close.
It’s kind of ridiculous how Mike talks so much shit about the Flyers on the FLYERS OFFICIAL RADIO STATION. If I was a Flyers executive, I’d be super pissed and get on the phone daily with Eric Johnson. But –  where are they going to go, WIP? They can’t go to WIP, because WIP already has the Phillies and Eagles, and WIP probably doesn’t want them anyway. The Flyers are stuck in a radio deal where the #1 show is led by a guy who doesn’t even like hockey. At least Martinez fights for their honor.
The problem is this, and Russ and I discussed this on the most recent podcast, but it’s sort of a self-fulfilling prophecy. Flyers fans don’t listen to the radio because they know WIP and 97.5 aren’t going to talk about hockey. Then the radio stations say, “well no one ever calls in to talk about hockey.”
Yes, no shit. The reason no one calls in is because they’ve already tuned out, because they know that sports radio is going to be 95% Eagles talk over and over again. It’s a circular exercise, like the mythological snake that eats its own tail.
But when media outlets automatically gear 95% of their coverage to the Eagles, they are missing out on the COLLECTIVE WHOLE of baseball, hockey, basketball, and even soccer fans in Philadelphia, which I personally believe matches the size of a strictly Eagles crowd.
I made a helpful graphic to illustrate:
We all know the Eagles are the most popular team in town, so they are the top dog, yes? But when you combine the smaller fan bases of the others sports (plus Villanova, Temple, etc), that overlap is probably larger or at least the same as the cross-section of football fans who would turn the radio off during baseball or hockey talk. I really think the average Philadelphia sports fan would be fine with hearing the appropriate amount of NHL or MLB talk if it was correctly interspersed with the NFL and NBA.
Let me show it to you this way:
If we assume that all of the other teams combined hit (at the very least) the same interest level as the Eagles, then are we not collectively dismissing those fans, who are consumers and possible clients, before we even get started? We are narrowing the potential audience by being conservative programmers, right off the bat.
Also:
What if I don’t like the hits?
What if I don’t like Pearl Jam or Bruce Springsteen? I’m hooking up the bluetooth and going straight to Spotify because I want to hear Mudhoney and L7 and whatever else isn’t being played on the radio. I’m putting on a podcast or something else.
And furthermore, what if I DO like the Eagles, but don’t need to hear about them 95% of the time?
That’s the other problem; it’s not that Eagles talk isn’t justified from a money-making and format standpoint, because it is, it’s just that the local sports talk stations are automatically dismissing the alternative without truly exploring if it might be feasible or not. Unfortunately, in an archaic PPM world, people are hired and fired based on a super-small sample size of ratings that really is not truly representative of all Philadelphia sports fans.
So Mike isn’t wrong, and he’s been in the business long enough to know what works and what doesn’t, but the model of OUTRIGHT dismissing large chunks of fans who have other interests just rubs me the wrong way.
The end.
