hey besties, if it does not seem to u that ur therapist thinks that their job is to make ur life better and reduce how ur symptoms impede the shit u want to do in ur life, then that therapist is not right for u!
ur psychiatrist's job is to medicate u (and also hopefully listen to ur concerns about ur meds and take them seriously!!!), but ur therapist's job is to make sure u have the tools to feel as safe and comfortable as possible in ur circumstances, with or without medication. your therapist should be encouraging you to set boundaries with people who hurt you, to communicate ur feelings openly and clearly, to identify those feelings and be able to work through them in healthy ways (finding alternatives to self harm and/or substance abuse, etc). if none of this is happening for you in therapy, you need to either have a serious talk w ur therapist about what ur needs and goals are, or you need to find a new therapist!!!
i know that this isn't easy and in some instances there may not even be another therapist available for you, and that rly sucks!! but if you are not getting what you need from therapy, you unfortunately need to advocate for yourself to be able to get those things. not all therapists are good at their jobs, but that doesn't mean that there ISN'T a therapist out there who is right for you <3
I believe medication and therapy is good, but my god is it exhausting being put on meds that constantly fuck me up and give me genuine health issues. I was pressured into taking antipsychotics and they worked for awhile but I started to get severe side effects/health issues and when bringing this up to my psychiatrist she just wanted me to take them in the morning. 😭
#zoya talks about stuff#therapy#therapy has rly had such a big impact on my life over the past couple years it's been so important to me!!!#but this was after a year of lying to my therapist every week lmao#and after years and years of trying therapy and then quitting as a child#the other thing about therapy is u have to want it to work#u have to want to get better. no one can force u#so if ur going in every week w no interest in engaging w ur therapist and no thought about what things u struggled w over the past week etc#then yeah nothing is gonna happen!!!! ur just sitting in a room making small talk with a stranger!!#therapy and medication have saved my life#i know they do not work for everyone and how meds interact w ur body is a whole ass thing#but frequently imo ppl who say therapy doesn't work either don't want it to work or have a therapist who cannot help them#and they don't know that they are allowed to be like “hey this isn't helping me can we change methods or can i see someone else”#ur therapist is there to help u!!!! if they are not helping you then u are allowed to seek someone else or tell them what is not helping <3
