I have one more exam for my history class and it'll be what determines if I keep my 4.0 gpa or not. To put it simply, I'm just a bit stressed

What is the difficulty curve like for american schooling? What is the usual pass/fail threshold? Here it is 50% with the peak of the bell curve (intentionally set and recalibrated every year) at 70%, so you get at least ±2 STDs of student marks captured between 50% and 90%. Which makes me think the exams/assignments themselves must be more difficult than their american versions. Ive heard that in some schools anything below 70% is an F, can that be true? The exam itself has to be easier in that case, surely
i might be the wrong person to ask, and not only because im not an expert or informed about the details of the current American school system, and im approaching middle age so my experience is now out of date, so maybe an actual teacher can correct me, but my experience in american K-12 education was that everything is made up and the points dont matter. i dont think it's standardized here at all. each teacher had their own grading opinions and some classes i went to were on a curve, some weren't, some were pass-fail, "cool' teachers would often say stuff like "everyone in here has an A right now. the only way you will lose that grade is by not showing up and not doing you work" and then would ding you points every time you fucked up, etc.
i have absolutely no idea what my HS GPA was, never cared about participating in graduation so i didn't go, and I think iirc I graduated late anyway (or they were threatening to withhold my diploma or something?) because of fucking gym credits (i have a connective tissue disorder, exercise-triggered asthma, crippled knees, and POTS, and kept telling adults that the stuff we were doing in PE class was hurting and injuring me, to which they would respond that i was "out of shape"), which my lawyer mother managed to get dropped from my graduation requirements by successfully proposing that my after school activities like dance and semi-pro theater and bartering stable work for horse riding time were sufficiently athletic to quality as PE. she was right btw i was working my ass off. anyway thanks mom. but again this is equivalent to Ryan Stiles successfully arguing that Drew Carey should give him ten points for the improvised limericks about the battle of Thermopylae instead of 3, and then Carey doing so.
TEST SCORES are standardized, and the Bush-era No Child Left Behind reforms turned my HS from a school where you go to class and do schoolwork into a test prep and test taking warehouse over one summer. it was an actual nightmare. i also dont know what my test scores were. probably bad
so basically my experience was that i never knew what my GPA was anyway because i both didnt care, and also whatever counted as a "credit" wasnt standardized either so it was impossible to keep track of. the causative order of these two things could go either way, idk if i didnt care because grades were too confusing, or if grades were confusing just to me because i didn't care.
edit: i also didn't have any friends who knew/were keeping track of what their GPA was during school. people either graduated or dropped out nd some of them got sent to summer school ("bad kids") and we would see the scores marked on assignments when the assignments were handed back, but cumulative, ongoing awareness of "how well are you doing in school officially"? maybe there were really on-the-ball kids who knew this information but if there were i never heard anyone talk about it and had no awareness whatsoever where any of my peers stood in school credit rankings.

[so idk how american education system words but] EJ hcs whenever he gets a less than stellar grade on a quiz or test. (just getting 90% of the total score)
I shouldn't have as many hcs about the grades the wildcats get and yet... here we are lol
Hope you enjoy this, anon!
So typically, a less than stellar grade in the US education system from hell would be like a 70% or below. (Which would be a letter grade of C).
However, EJ "all I do is win" Caswell would very much consider anything 89% or lower to be less than stellar
Which means a B or lower. He'd typically be verging on upset if the grade is a 92% or lower
(an A-?? The SCANDAL!)
Most AP classes are weighted, so there's an additional 10 points added to the final grade. Theory being that it'll be harder and this will help it to not mess with a GPA
So it IS possible in an AP class to get over 100%
Which is how EJ "I'm actually an idiot" Caswell has a 4.3 GPA
But sometimes....he doesn't do so well on a test or quiz, or a project and... he takes that personally
Well, he won't freak out too badly if it's just one because he's got time to turn it around, or the rest of his As will make sure the grade doesn't drop
But then...he takes AP Physics
It's his AP Physics class that really gets him because THERES TOO MANY EQUATiONS to remember
AND he takes it senior year so he's got HSM, three sports practices, student government meetings, college applications, AND his other work to do on top of learning about kinematics
What does kinematics even MEAN??
So he spirals HARD after his third bad (like...72%) quiz grade
He tells Ashlyn he's dropping out of school because he clearly can't hack it
EJ starts eating only steamed chicken and broccoli because "food has lost all flavor so what's it matter"
He doesn't put product in his hair for two weeks
The breaking point is Ashlyn catches him researching clown colleges because "my life is a joke so my career might as well be too"
After taking some advil for the migraine EJ is going to cause her, Ashlyn talks it out with him, why he's spiraling and stressed
She helps him make a game plan, starting with maybe NOT playing three sports this year? And maybe its a good thing he wasn't cast as a lead in HSM... he should remember that for next semester too!
She forces him to go to his AP Physics teacher after school to ask for help
It's Mazzara, who's glad to see EJ asking for help, and offers to be of assistance however he can
He also helps set EJ up with a tutor who can help him in addition to Mazzara's help
It takes time, some extra assignments, a few redos, and is a total team effort, but EJ gets his grade back where it belong (an A) and ends up getting a 4 (out of 5) on the AP test in the spring

100 Days of Productivity (64-68/100) + January Spread
Moving into the new year!! I’m so excited for January to begin. I’m ready to say thank you to 2018 and send it off and move forward into 2019! With any luck, this year has a lot in store for me!
January is going to be a bit of a hell month for me. I’m taking a winter term class, preparing for the SAT, and preparing my transfer applications all at once and then spring semester starts on the 28th! I have a lot to get done, but my plan is to really buckle down and work hard every day this month, knowing it’s all going towards the game-changing goal of 2019: Get into Gallatin! My hope is that, if I work really hard and get everything done this month, then spring term will be fairly breezy and I can focus on keeping my GPA as high as possible.
January’s spread is pretty much the same as December, all the same components just shifted a bit to accommodate the shape of the month and slightly larger daily boxes. I tried working in colored pencil without much success but this is only my second decorative spread ever, and I learn something new every time! I’m trying a new style of daily spread in the new year, trying to keep things more streamlined and less time consuming to layout every day/week will update when I get a sense of how it’s working for me!
100 Days of Productivity update below the cut!
Day 64: The day after Christmas I started cat-sitting for my sister so I’ve been hauling all my study materials back and forth every day, but I have still been getting a lot done! I studied for the SAT with Kahn Academy’s SAT prep course for around 2 hours and then brainstormed essay ideas for my transfer applications before heading back to my neighborhood to see Bohemian Rhapsody. I was so surprised it was still showing at the theater near me and it was so good I’m so glad I got a chance to go!
Day 65: In the morning I saw the new Grinch movie because I still hadn’t seen it yet and I really liked it! I think I liked it better than the original even! I loved Cindy Lou Hoo and her family’s story. I might have cried a little. Then I hauled everything over to my sister’s place and wrote the first draft of my NYU essay. It was really just a brain dump more than anything and I’ll probably end up splitting it into two of the essays for the application. I studied for the SAT and started reteaching myself geometry with the Kahn Academy course as part of my SAT prep. My weakest points by far are linear algebra and geometry because I really just don’t remember all the stuff I learned in high school so I think the fastest way to bring up my math score is to just do a complete refresh for those courses.
Day 66: Friday was a bit of a shortened day. I woke up a little late and then hauled myself to my sister’s dropping of laundry on the way. I was only able to be there and study for a few hours since I had an appointment in the afternoon but I did some SAT practice and then geometry review before heading home. I had planned to do a couple errands after my appointment but most places I needed to go were closed so I ended up doing more geometry review until way too late before doing some cleaning and organizing around the apartment before bed.
Day 67: SAT Practice Test Day! After taking care of the kitties I settled in for the Practice test. I spent about 4.5 hours on it since I took breaks between sections to play with the cats and make sure they felt loved. My score was up 90 points from my first practice test and 100 points from my converted high school score so that was awesome! I probably won’t keep making such huge leaps of improvement in the next tests since once my math skills are fully refreshed it’ll come down mainly to time management during the test and general speed which improves a lot more incrementally I imagine. I’m super happy with the improvement. In the evening I just ran an errand on my way home and then took it easy.
Day 68: I took the day off from studying today! Honestly, I’ve been feeling a bit funky and out of sorts all week and after improving so much on my practice test I felt like I could afford and a day off and thought it might do me some good. I spent the day mainly on my January spread and the upcoming week’s spread. In the morning I baked some muffins and worked on my bullet journal then I headed to my sisters and played with the cats and watched youtube and read for a while. Around 5 I started nodding off so I headed home where I kept working on my journal finished some last tasks for the week.
I’ve noticed my bujo starting to feel more like a chore and just another task I have to accomplish during the day which really isn’t the vibe I’m going for. I wanted to bujo to have more creative freedom and flexibility because I was finding that preprinted planners were boring to look at didn’t fit my needs exactly right but honestly, bujo is time-consuming!! I think the time commitment for making spreads and the full responsibility for providing an effective time management system can just feel a bit too much and too stressful when it’s meant to be fun but it might just be my off state of mind and stress over the upcoming month that’s throwing me off. I’m also still just begining and working on finding the right style that works for me. I might start moving towards more minimal spreads to save me time and brain space. My daily spreads next week are going to be a lot more minimal so I’ll see how that goes!
It’s now 12:30 so way too late oops. So much for going to bed by 12:30 I really need to work on my sleep schedule. Somehow the evening hours just slip away from me and suddenly it’s past bedtime and I still have dishes to do and to get ready for bed and such! If you have any tips or tricks for getting to bed earlier or have any thoughts on my thoughts about bujo stress lmk! I’d definitely be interested to hear!

It's not uncommon for freshman to fail classes their first semester. For some majors, most freshman classes are "weed out" courses that are meant to be hard so that students will drop or change the major. If your GPA drops then don't worry too much, you just need to kick ass next semester. The same thing happened to me and it took a while but now I'm graduating with a pretty decent GPA. Just hang in there!
it’s funny bc the ones that are supposed to weed out the kids in my major are the ones that im kicking ass in and im just stressed bc this is literally english and normally ive never gotten below a 90 in english but????? aahhhh thanks for the supporting words though this is really helping calm down my stress :)

Thoughts about Dropping
This is an email my professor sends every semester (having taken the class twice, I can confirm he does) and I didn’t listen to it the first time. If you or a friend is considering dropping a class, I think it’s a good read. So here it is.
Each semester, I believe I need to send at least two emails to the class: One is the first email. And this is the other. It is the one I absolutely hate to send. But I believe I have to send it because each semester I have bunches of emails from students who are not doing well in the class and want to know if they should withdraw from the class. So this email has my thoughts on whether you should drop a class. Even though this is definitely not one of the emails that makes me happy to send, it is important stuff, which is why I send it—so READ IT because it pertains not only to my class but to any class you take! Also read it because it gives a reminder of how the grading scheme works in the class.  And read it quickly because you MUST make your decision very rapidly.
DROP CONSIDERATIONS
As I just said, every semester I HATE this time of the term because right about now some students are debating whether or not to drop the class. I can so readily recall the first week when everyone was chipper and had few concerns. It was really cold outside, the lecture room was sort of packed, and everyone was so quiet because they were so nervous. Now it’s warmer outside (hot today!), the room is not quite as full, and students not nearly so quiet. I like one of these three attributes—the lack of absolute stillness in the classroom! Anyway, I always hope that no one does poorly enough to drop, but I know this hope is futile—the reality is that there will always be students for whom economics is tough or who do not devote enough time to the class. So, let me weigh in with my comments, which might be useful for some of you for my class and perhaps useful to others for other classes.
I have two key thoughts: First, you do NOT want an F in any class. An F will hang around your transcript like a bowling ball chained to your leg and will handicap you throughout your academic career. I like bowling but I sure would HATE to have a bowling ball chained to me! So, you want to avoid an F. A W is bad but an F is almost immeasurably worse. F’s can literally change your life: You can lose your scholarship and must make up the financial difference. You might no longer qualify for a desired major. You might not be accepted by your favorite graduate school. I am sure you get the idea. My second key thought is that you do not want to take a bet in which the odds of a very bad outcome are really high and the odds of a good outcome are really low. A bet with a low probability of a good outcome and a high probability of a bad outcome is a sucker bet. You definitely do not want to take any sucker bets because they have really low expected utility! In what sense is your grade like a bet? Well, you have to be unsure about your final exam test score. So your decision to withdraw or not is similar to a bet on what your final exam test score will be.
So, what do these thoughts mean? Let me use my class for an example—you can apply this example to other classes as necessary. You can look up the grading scale in the syllabus. And keep in mind the grading methods: 50% on the high midterm and 50% on the final or 40% on each of the midterms and 20% on the final. (By the way, PLEASE note that you must take the final exam; it’s not one of the tests you can drop.) In most instances, if the midterm test scores are far apart, the 50/50 method will give the higher grade. If the midterm test scores are close together, then the 40/40/20 method will often give a better outcome if the final exam score is low.
Also keep in mind how you calculate your scores: Take the number correct, divide by 30, multiply by 100 and then add the extra credit points. For example, if you got 25 correct and 2 points on the extra credit, then the score is (25/30) x 100 + 2 = 83.33 + 2 = 85.22%.
Now, I think the key insight is what I said above: you should look at your final exam test score as somewhat random. Depending on how well you are doing you might score, say, a 73% but then with almost equal probability you might wind up with a 70% or perhaps even a 76%. Alternatively, if you are doing better, you might score a 93% but then again, with equal probability, you might have a 90% or a 96%. The point is that you can perhaps predict what you EXPECT to receive, but what you actually receive likely will be somewhat different than your prediction.
I realize the extra credit for Midterm 2 is not yet posted (because it’s not yet completed). But you probably have a decent idea how well you did, so you can estimate that score and add it to your posted Midterm 2 score. Now, suppose a student has a 50% on the first midterm and a 50% on the second. In this case, I think the student literally must drop the class. Why? Because the student needs an 84% on the final to get a D and a 91% to get a C. So here is a case of a bet with the odds of a bad outcome are really high and the odds of a good outcome are slim. In my experience, the student will not earn an 84% on the final. Anyone in this boat who predicts an 84% as his or her score on the final exam is almost surely going to be disappointed. Instead, the student will flunk and receive an F, which the student does NOT want.
A slightly more difficult case is a student who has a 67% on one midterm and a 50% on the other. Because you can drop a test score in my class, this student goes into the final exam with a very low D, the 67% test score. A final exam score of 95% or better is a B; a final exam between 89% and 95% is a B-; a final exam score between 85% and 89% is a C+; a final exam score between 73% and 85% is a C; a final exam score between 67% and 73% is a D; and a final exam lower than 67% is an F. I’d probably advise this student to drop. Why? When I think about predicting the final exam, a test score of more than 93% almost surely won’t happen, so a B is out of the question. C is a potential, but even so, it’s tough: The student would need to earn a 73%, above the highest score on either of the midterms. This is not assured by any means, so quite possibly the student is looking at receiving either a D or an F. This is another sort of bet with a low chance of an acceptable good payoff (the C) and a high chance of a bad payoff (the D or F). Plus if this student wants to major in the Warrington Business College, a minimum 3.00 preprofessional grade point average is required and my class is one of seven that are calculated into this preprofessional grade point average. So for this student, even a C is harmful because it is below the minimum required preprofessional GPA. In this case, even the acceptable outcome is bad so for a WCB student, the student should definitely drop.
How about a student with a 75% on one midterm and a 75% on the other? Here is a student who likely should stay in the class. For this student, a final exam score of 87% or better is a B; a final exam score between 81% and 87% is a B-; a final exam score between 77% and 81% is a C+; a final exam score between 50% and 77% is a C; and a final exam between 26% (!) and 50% is a D. This is a good bet—it’s possible to get an 81% and this student might well wind up with a B-. Though a B- isn’t great for the preprofessional GPA, it’s not terrible. And if this student is not a business major, most likely a B- or even a C is a fine grade as far as his or her major is concerned.
A case that is much harder is a student with, say, a 60% and a 70%. This student goes into the final with a low C, the 70%. A B in the class is probably not a possibility—that would require a 92% on the final. A C+, though is a distinct possibly but then so, too, is an F. Frankly, in this situation I really don’t know what to advise—it really depends on how and why the student thinks one of the scores was so low, the 60%. If the 60% score was just bad luck, then perhaps the student should stay. However, if the 70% score was just good luck, then perhaps the student should go.
Finally, one last set of comments about my class. The correlation between the test scores is high. This fact means that a student who has two 60% scores is highly unlikely to have a final score much different than 60%. A few years back I looked over the previous scores of students who earned 100% on my final exam. The lowest score ANY of these students had earned on any previous test was an 84%, on the second midterm. And this student had earned 100% on the first test. So I believe this student simply “blew off” midterm 2. Anyway, the moral here is that if you have relatively low scores on the first two exams but think that a 100% on the final will pull you through, the odds are that’s not going to happen. Instead be blunt and realistic about your chances on the final exam.
Well, you probably get the idea of how to apply my suggested analysis to all your classes: Just as I said, be blunt and realistic about your chances on the final exam. Unless you have some information that the final in a class is really simple, do NOT assume that your final score by some miracle will be immensely higher than your midterm scores. (And the final is not simple in my class. Typically the average final score is between the score on midterm 1 and midterm 2, but there are exceptions.) Miracles happen but they are rare…that’s why they are classified as miracles! Calculate the likely range of your grade and check it against what you need for your major. Avoid an F at all costs! And avoid being put in a situation in which the best grade you can earn in a class is barely acceptable and it’s a lot more likely you will earn a miserable grade. If you find yourself in that sort of situation, drop the class.
Also, keep in mind that the examples I gave above are illustrative only. Undoubtedly your situation differs somewhat. But use what I sketched out to think about your situation. Then, talk with people you trust and solicit their opinions. PLEASE don’t email me because it’s the people that know you that should have weight. Their opinions will count more than mine because they know a lot more of your situation, e.g., your scholarship(s), your major, your GPA, your personal tendencies, etc. Also DON’T email and ask me to make calculations for your grades—follow the examples above and you can make your own calculations.
Remember that if you are on Bright Futures and you drop a class, you (likely) will be required to reimburse Bright Futures for the tuition. I’m not going into whether or not I think that is a good policy (I do not…guess I lied when I said I wasn’t going into it! ) but it is the policy. However, if you are on track to fail the class, you might be putting your entire Bright Futures scholarship into jeopardy. So do not decide you cannot afford to drop a class IF by staying you might lose your entire Bright Futures. That decision would be exceedingly penny wise and dollar foolish!
One more piece of advice about dropping: If you are going to drop, don’t miss the deadline. The deadline this term is, I believe, April 7 which is why I said above that you have to make a quick decision. Anyway, if you miss the deadline, for WHATEVER reason, it’s highly unlikely you will be allowed to drop. And, even if you are allowed to drop, it’s an incredible hassle to do so: You will need to petition, you will need to spend hours talking with people, and you will spend hours gathering information. Even after you do all this and spend all that time, the petition might well be denied. So if you do decide to withdraw from a class, do so before the deadline. To withdraw, I believe you need to contact your college and get a withdrawal form from them. Then carefully follow their instructions about how to complete the form and where to turn it in.
Mark
PS: As I said, please do NOT ask me to make these calculations for you. You can do it. And if you do it, then I think it becomes “really real;” that is, you really get a good insight into what you must do to get the grade you want!
PPS: I have received a few emails asking about extra credit on the final exam but there is no extra credit on that test.
PPPS: I have also received some emails asking about how to study for the final. I’ll send an email out with THOSEthoughts later this week.

Playlist: which Nintendo games we’re playing right now
We love Nintendo – it’s in our name; it’s in our DNA. And, naturally, we play a lot of Nintendo games. If you’ve ever wondered which games keep us occupied, we’ve compiled a playlist of recent titles we’re heavily into. You never know, you might even find some inspiration in here too.
Check out our latest playlist below and let us know which games you’re obsessed with at the moment. We promise there’s no judgment here.
Pure Nintendo playlist
Justin
Guacamelee 2 (Switch) – Been playing this with friends at our weekly game nights and having a blast! The challenge is definitely ramping up as we near the final boss, but it’s worth the ride. I especially liked the ‘Dank Cave’ hidden area :). The devs had some fun there!
Metro 2033 Redux / Metro Last Light Redux (Switch) – Playing this for review and enjoying my time so far. I’m not too far in yet but look for full my full write-up on these coming up!
Heath
Lego City Undercover (Switch) – It  began when I saw it was on sale last week. Then I thought I will just play it on my Wii U, but that seemed like work. Then I remembered Jemma’s review, so I read it. After reading it I decided to buy it again. I have been enjoying it ever since. I play a mission or two per day.
Soccer, Tactics and Glory (Switch) – This began as a review I posted earlier in the week but since finishing the review I have still been enjoying it. I try to play a game or two a night.
My Hero: One’s Justice (Switch) – I have been playing this off and on for a year now. I recently decided to give it another go. I am really enjoying playing my way back through the story again. Trying to get better rankings on certain levels.
Rune Factory 4 (Switch) – I am playing this for an upcoming review and it’s under embargo so I can’t say any opinion at the moment. It is the game I have been sinking 90% of my gaming time into.
Seth
Stardew Valley (Switch) – With a new Animal Crossing game on the horizon, there has been no better time to jump into Stardew Valley than now. I’ve been playing the game on and off for years, but lately I’ve devoted more time to it so I can leave my farm on a high note when I sign my soul away to Tom Nook.
Overwatch (Switch) – Most who know me know that I’ve long hated the way Blizzard handles their popular hero shooter, Overwatch, but with the recent release of the game on Nintendo Switch everything changed, and it has become one of my favorite games on the system.
Payday 2 (Switch) – The Payday video game franchise has always been a long-time favorite of mine, and recently I’ve been spending some time with Payday 2 on Nintendo Switch, so that I can regain my “Infamy” status in that particular version of the title.
Pokémon Shield (Switch) – A couple months after the launch of Sword & Shield and I’m still going strong on my Pokémon addiction. I absolutely love the camping feature, the wild area, and the new Pokémon introduced in the game. With the recent announcement of DLC and the launch of Pokémon Home, I can’t see myself stopping this game anytime soon.
Kirk
Leisure Suit Larry – Wet Dreams Don’t Dry: Happy Ending (Switch) – After missing this point-and-click adventure throwback upon its initial release, I received a review code to take a look at the new “Happy Ending” content that was recently released. You have to understand that the first LSL was released when I was in college, and was therefore directly responsible for shaving at least a few points off my GPA. Thankfully, that’s not a concern anymore.
Glass Masquerade 2: Illusions (Switch) – Another review in the works. This beautiful, surrealistic puzzle game is my current go-to when I have a short time to play or want to kill a few moments before or after digging into a bigger title for a longer gaming session. Speaking of which…
Warriors Orochi 4 Ultimate (Switch) – This is my second attempt at conquering this entire game, made more difficult by all of the content added to this new ultimate edition. Thankfully, my oldest son is helping me out now that Ryu is included, and my daughter jumps in, too, provided she can play as Kunoichi. 177 fighters now, and it takes those two characters to get my family involved. I’d say I don’t understand it, except you’ll rarely find me using a party that doesn’t include Sun Shangxiang.
Jennifer
Fire Emblem: Three Houses (Switch) – I am late to playing this game, but over the course of a month or so, I’ve managed about 60 hours into it. It’s been a welcome surprise how much content is in this game. As a first time FE player, I’ll definitely be paying more attention to this series.
Animal Crossing: New Leaf (3DS) – In a desperate attempt to get in as much Animal Crossing time as I can, I’ve played a bit more in my town. It’s still a solid game, but it hasn’t dampened my excitement for New Horizons.
Trev
While I’m playing several games for review coverage, I want to focus on the one game I’m playing just for fun… Polyroll (Switch) – Lots of platformers try to capture that feeling of nostalgia, but Polyroll manages to pull it off successfully. From its Sonic-esque gameplay to its colorful level design, it feels like a game I would’ve played in the early-mid 90s. I think I’ll be sticking with this one for a while too, as I try to find all the hidden gems. The Switch is no stranger to platformers, but Polyroll has a high-quality that many lack. For less than $9.99, genre fans need to definitely check this one out!
Jemma
Milo’s Quest (Switch) – I’ve just reviewed this simple RPG, in which you play the role of a puppy chasing ghosts while digging for bones. There’s a lot to like in this cute game, though it does lack some variety.
Dr. Mario World (mobile) – I don’t know if this will ever drop off my playlist! I’ve been playing this one for awhile now. I love the events that come up every week, like star and clinic events, which keep me hooked. I’m currently on level 388.
Mario Kart Tour (mobile) – I played this a LOT over the holidays, and I’m still playing it weekly. I love the themed cups and its fun to play the remixed retro tracks. I’m also desperate to collect all the drivers!
Super Mario Party (Switch) – this is something we play most weekends, making levels to outdo each other. I’ve been enjoying desert levels of late.
Super Mega Space Blaster Special Turbo (Switch) – I’ve just started this one for my next review, a retro-inspired shooter with plenty of unlockables as well as leaderboards to climb. Watch for my review soon!
Hey! Pikmin (3DS) – I’ve been revisiting this one with my family, it seems to be a favorite lately. I reviewed it way back in 2017 and I’ve grown to appreciate it even more over time.
What’s on your playlist this week? How often would you like to see our playlist? Let us know in the comments section below.

My journey of getting admission in MBA program    (Blog #3)
Tumblr media
My timeline so far was that during the admission cycle of 2008-2010 I had applied to the following MBA programs
Applied and rejected without interview in the following
Wake Forest University
Michigan State University
Brigham young University
Southern Methodist University
Indiana University
University of Georgia
University of Illinois at Urbana Campaign
University of Texas at Dallas
York University
Three schools rejected after interview
College of William & Mary
University of Pittsburgh
McGill University
One wait-list
Case Western Reserve University
In 2011, I had applied and got admits from the following schools although I did not enroll.
Schulich India MBA
Copenhagen Business School
SPJain PGPM
In 2012 I shortlisted following schools where I would apply to enroll in 2013. Purdue University
Purdue University
Penn State University
Ohio State University
University of Pittsburg
Southern Methodist University
College of William & Mary
University of California at Irvine
The rationale behind selecting these schools was that, firstly, they had good curriculum focused towards operations. Secondly, they had good tie-ups with companies and had great local reputation and some national recognition. I also saw from their career services report and talking to 2nd year students/recent graduates that companies such as Amazon, Deloitte etc. recruited students. Thirdly, their average GMAT score was in 640 – 670 range. My second GMAT was a mere 610, I thought of retaking the GMAT yet again in order to land in the ballpark.
While I was shortlisting US schools I became increasingly aware of the visa restrictions in the US H1-B program. I started looking at countries that offered good post MBA work permit. UK was an obvious exclusion, and Canada that already on my radar from earlier attempts was an obvious inclusion.
Ivey, Queen’s, Schulich, McGill, UBC – Sauder, Rotman were the top choices. I also started to look at Montreal based schools closely, Quebec at the time offered a faster path to Permanent Residency provided you had French language skills. So in addition to McGill, I added HEC Montreal and Concordia to my list as well. The language based point system was appealing to me. I knew that my GMAT score of 610 was my weak point. To strengthen my overall profile for Quebec based I took French classes, and cleared DELF A1 exam.
At the same time I thought about my work experience and age. I would have 6+ years of work experience by the time classes start in fall of 2013. I had already thought about one year MBA programs Copenhagen Business School, SPJain, Ivey, Queen’s, HEC Montreal etc. Since I was already learning French – I had very good conversation with ESSEC adcom on the QS world / The MBA Tour. They encouraged me to apply so I added ESSEC as well. Their MBA structure was unique in that it exposed the students to Singapore as well in addition to the French market.
So my initial list of schools would be
Purdue University
Penn State University
Ohio State University
University of Pittsburgh
Southern Methodist University
College of William & Mary
University of California at Irvine
Ivey
Queen’s
HEC Montreal
McGill
UBC Sauder
Concordia
ESSEC
Rotman
This was more of a long list than a shortlist. I knew that ultimately securing an admit would heavily depend on my GMAT score. So I retook it the third time. It yielded 630, not a great one but perhaps not an extremely incompetent either. In most schools scholarship or financial aid is merit based. Merit is measured by GMAT score. Given my less than stellar one, even if I were to get admit, I wouldn’t be able to enroll since I did not had that much money to pay for tuition.
ADMISSIBILITY: The whole purpose of applying to a business schools is to be admitted to the business school.
Taking the GMAT, TOEFL. Shortlisting business schools. Sending your score to those business schools. Writing 3 essays on average for every MBA application. Rereading those essays, giving them out to your friends, colleagues and MBA alumni for proof reading. Rewriting your essays making them crisp and air tight. Reaching out to your boss to write letters of recommendation. Reaching out to your undergrad university to send your transcripts to the B schools. Convincing your parents to let go of all their life’s saving by paying the tuition fees. Liquidating all your savings to spend it all on application fees, GMAT/TOFEL tests, and towards tuition fees.
At the end of jumping these many hoops, all the effort goes down the drain if you get rejected. And it feels terrible. I know because I went through that.
Since admissibility was the name of the game, I decided not to apply to highly attractive B schools where Indian application with 700+ GMAT would apply. Purdue, Penn Smeal, Ohio Fisher, Ivey, Queen’s, Rotman all were dropped. I had to decline admit from Copenhagen Business school from earlier because CBS announces scholarship decision after candidate had deposited the deposit fees. I couldn’t take that bet. In the 2012 admission season for classes starting in 2013 my shortlist was below
Reach schools: Schools where I thought I will have very little chance of admit. These schools attracted many applicants because of their location, career outcome, brand recognition etc. Their class profile had higher avg. GMAT score and the number of applicants who target these schools was high.
University of California at Irvine
McGill (reapplicant)
UBC Sauder
Target schools: Schools I considered that I was in the ballpark. I felt confident of atleast getting invited for interview. My GMAT of 630 was bang on with their avg. GMAT or +/- 10 points
Southern Methodist University – Cox School of Business (reapplicant)
College of William & Mary – Raymond A. Mason School of Business (reapplicant)
HEC Montreal
ESSEC
Safe schools: I was highly confident of being invited for an interview and getting admit as I thought that I was competitive than most applicants.
Concordia – John Molson School of Business
I started applying to these schools around the same time QS World and The MBA Tour were visiting New Delhi, India which was Sep – Oct of 2012. I had already submitted my application to SMU Cox and was hoping to be invited for interview. At The MBA Tour, I meet with their admission committee member, where she mentioned during Q&A panel that although Cox’s average GMAT is 640, they evaluate candidates from same country/similar profiles against each other. They mentioned that average GMAT for Indian students was 695. Not sure if this was discrimination or unfair high bar for Indian applicants, but it was clear that I wasn’t “smarter” than most applicants at Cox, my hopes of an admit dwindled to zero as soon as I learned of a different average GMAT for Indians.
Luckily, I had learned to spread my risk. I was scheduled for my interview with W&M’s Randy Tripp. We had good conversation and I submitted a strong application. It was Feb/Mar 2013 and I was also interviewed by ESSEC via Skype.
Meanwhile, as expected I got denied by UBC Sauder and McGill without an interview. However, unexpectedly I was turned down by Concordia since somehow they converted my GPA on 10 scale onto Canadian equivalent and calculated that it did not meet their minimum criteria. This was a shocker since none of the 15+ schools I had applied across US/Canada/France never had that concern. I got admitted into ESSEC and also qualified for their financial loan. I got admit from College of William and Mary with some scholarship and Graduate Assistantship. Unexpectedly, I was interviewed by University of California at Irvine. Since their avg. GMAT was at 680 – highest of the schools I had applied, I never expect an interview. I had great interview which lasted 90 days and received admit from Irvine on my birthday. The tuition fees of $96,000 and cost of living at California was way too much for me. I tried friend-funding on the lines of crowd funding, and reached out to some 30 of my friends asking for $1000 loan for 2 years. In the end the effort failed and the cost proved insurmountable. HEC Montreal was taking longer to reply, and the fee deposit date of W&M was getting closer. My constant pestering perhaps led to my rejection at HEC.
I took the GMAT the 4th time hoping to get a higher score for better scholarship and improve the NPV, ROI of MBA investment but 4th time also yielded 630. In the end, my MBA admissions journey was concluded. I would enroll in fall of 2013 into Raymond A. Mason School of Business – The College of William & Mary.

Why is someone's car insurance company private information?
I'm really confused about this. I was trying to go about ways of finding out the name of an individuals car insurance company because I wanted to report fraud. But when I try to do that I get blocked. I even tried to guess their car insurance company by calling one and asking if the person was insured by them. I found out that it's because it's illegal to get this information because it is private information? Why is that? I can see how getting someone's ss# or credit card # would be illegal because things like that you can do illegal things with like steal their identity. But you can't do any illegal harmful things to people by getting the name of their car insurance company, so why is that guarded information?""

Will my insurance company be able to cover my damages, even though I was not present? Please no smart remarks, I am asking because I'd appreciate some advice.""

I am now 15 and 9 months and when i turn 16 and 9 months around May next year i would like to get a new 2015 Mustang GT for 32k. There is a problem. My mom is worried about how much she will have to pay for insurance so i would like to get an estimate from you guys before asking her to call the insurance company. By the way we are from Poland( I am first generation born in New York Brooklyn now in Maryland). I was thinking maybe she could just tell the insurance company she is buying a second car for herself to maybe keep the insurance company from knowing its for a 16 year old they wont be able to trust.(Even though i have been driving my Mom's Camry for a few years now and am beyond responsible enough.) I was hoping below a 100$/month? (P.S. She is very responsible and had never been in an accident caused by her fault so her insurance company trusts her and i believe she is with Erie Insurance now after she switched from Geico who were overcharging her for the house coverage i believe...)

Where can I get affordable health insurance for my family?
USA 2013, it's now illegal, NOT to have medical insurance for everyone in your family. I get insurance for myself through work, which is mostly paid for by them, except my high deductible and co-pays, which I can barley afford. My wife and kids will cost me over $800.00 per month to insure through my employer. Can't afford that, it's almost as much as my rent. Half the insurance companies I've applied for say I make too much, the other half tell me I don't make enough. What I'm I supposed to do, eat or have insurance? If I just don't buy any, I'll be penalized through taxes at the end of the year. So, does anyone know of any good health insurance companies out there? Thanks.""

Is it legal for the State to randomly demand proof of insurance?
Here's the deal. I got a letter from the Ohio BMV saying that I have been randomly chosen to prove I have insurance on one of my vehicles. I do have insurance, have always had insurance, (at least for the last 25 years or so) As I got to thinking about it, it started bugging me because it seems that this violates my 4th, and possibly my 5th, and potentially my 6th amendment rights. The letter kindly apologizes for any inconvenience, then states that if I do not comply, my license will be suspended. I begrudgingly intend to comply, just to avoid any hassle, but before I do (I have 3 weeks) I was hoping someone could explain to me how this can be legal. I can kind of understand having to prove compliance during a traffic stop, but randomly??? Through the mail??? The audacity of these people is troubling. Game on.""

Answers to cheat on the test), and charge higher rates to Yahoo! Answers users than to individuals who do not have Yahoo accounts? How much different will the rates be?""

I got a ticket which doesn't put points on my license. Could it affect my insurance rates?
I was a passenger in my friend's car when he was ticketed for having an open container of alcohol in the backseat. This occurred in Illinois, and the text of the relevant law is at the bottom. He was ticketed for violating section A; I was ticketed for section B. I confirmed with the very nice lady at the DMV that no points will be placed on my license since I was the passenger, but she was unsure as to what kind of report will be sent to the Secretary of State's office to be added to my driving record. So, here's my question: since I'm not getting any points for this, is it likely to affect my insurance rates? I can see both possibilities - on the non-affect side, it's a non-moving violation, but on the yes-affect side, it involves alcohol (albeit peripherally in my specific situation). If the consensus is that it will make my rates go up, I am going to try to get court supervision. If not, I'll try to save the extra money that would cost. Sec. 11-502. Transportation or possession of alcoholic liquor in a motor vehicle. (a) Except as provided in paragraph (c), no driver may transport, carry, possess or have any alcoholic liquor within the passenger area of any motor vehicle upon a highway in this State except in the original container and with the seal unbroken. Wanted some unbiased opinion on car insurance?
I'm getting a Lotus Elise transferred under my name sometime next week and it will be replacing my MINI Cooper as my daily driver. This car is typically insured as a pleasure car, so most people who own them don't often drive them over 3k miles per year. I'll be doing nearly three times that, so I'm expecting my rates to be little higher than usual just because it'll be my daily driver. So here's my question, may I insure the car as a pleasure or weekend vehicle and still drive it above the mileage that is permitted by my insurance co. ? Also, I'm only 20. I've gotten a quote of $3200 per year to insure as a weekend car, and that's the lowest that I've found so far. I'm expecting something a bit higher to register it as a daily. Feel free to throw in what you would recommend for an insurance company, I'm still shopping for one with a decent rate.""

Would it be a good economic decision to lower my limits of liability on my car insurance?
I'm looking at my bills, and trying to cut costs, would it be wise to lower the limits of liability on our older (2004) car. Here's what I have now: Bodily Injury - 25,000 / 50,000 Property Damage - 50,000 Personal Injury - 10,000 Uninsured Motor Vehicle - 25,000 Bodily Injury (non-stacked) - 50,000 Really, my husband only uses this car to go to work and back. We use the newer car for everything else. What would you recommend lowering our limits to, or would you recommend lowering them at all? Thanks!!! I know nothing about this... How is the health insurance bill in the Senate going to lower costs?
Can someone explain to me how the bill going through the Senate right now does anything to control costs for the average family or person in the US? So far this is what I see: 1) If you have a good plan they are going to tax it - Raises costs 2) The insurance companies will have to cover everyone, even preexisting conditions - Raises costs 3) Cuts payouts to health providers for Medicare - Raises costs on others (they have to make it up) 4) Shifts costs to States for Medicaid - Raises state costs which raise state taxes 5) Cuts how much the Government pays for drugs - Raises cost when pharma makes up costs on private plans 6) Forces businesses to provide insurance for employees - Raises costs on all products Can anyone explain how this bill can lower costs for those who have insurance and keep them from rising? I am 25, just got my drivers license, and have a 1997 mustang. I am in Louisiana. How much would the basic insurance be? I have never been in an accident, and the mustang is just the basic model. Why I Wanted To Build A Real Estate Empire
In 2002, I was one year into my new job in San Francisco when I decided I needed to build a real estate empire. The dotcom collapse was traumatizing and I wanted to own real assets with more stable cash flow.
After a couple years, my desire for real estate narrowed so I could retire early and live off the income. But then the housing crisis hit, ruining my confidence that I could one day be free due to rental property.
Now things are lollipops and roses. Rental income is strong. Valuations are at all-time highs. Mortgage rates are still close to all-time lows. Yet rental income has dropped to below 10% of my overall income. At the same time, owning physical real estate has become my main source of stress. Given my life is relatively stress-free, any type of stress is ironically magnified.
To maximize lifestyle and profits, I should rationally sell all rentals while valuations are at all-time highs and focus my attention on building an online business since it’s more fun and profitable. Further, online media valuations are still relatively low, meaning there’s tremendous upside, although Vice Media raising $450 million at a $5.7B post-money valuation might argue otherwise.
Despite the logic, I refuse to sell my entire rental property portfolio because of one main reason: insurance against a difficult life for my child.
Life May Get Brutally Difficult For Our Children
Follow any college admissions acceptance record and you’ll notice a steady decline over time due to a rise in competition. Average GPA and SAT scores for elite schools have never been higher, yet getting in has never been harder. Kids of all races are realizing the frustration Asian kids have been going through for years now.
90%+ of you won’t get into a prestigious university, and that’s OK.
Read any media publication, and there will be articles droning on and on about how prohibitively expensive it is to live in any major city. It gets incredibly depressing, especially for young people looking to establish roots.
Observe who gets a job at all the sexiest startups and highly coveted organizations. They all come from the same elite schools over and over again, yet many still complain how they are just scraping by.
Life seems like it’s only going to get MORE competitive with globalization, not less competitive. Our children need lots of luck and parents who plan way in advance for tough times.
By definition, only 10% of the working population gets to be in the top 10% income earner bracket. And only those in the top 10% earn an income of at least $115,000 a year according to the IRS.
I could choose being in the top 25% ($68,000) as a income goal for this article, but it’s very hard to get ahead living in a big city when you need to pay $2,500+/month in rent or $1.2M+ for a median priced house. Of course nobody needs to live in an expensive city to get ahead, it’s just nice to give our children as many options as possible.
Related: How Much Do The Top Income Earners Make By Percentage
Given there’s a high chance my son won’t get into a top 25 college, won’t land a job at a top 50 company, and won’t make a top 10% income, he might get thoroughly bummed out with all the rejection since he’ll grow up with peers who will.
Further, there’s a chance my son will have a vision disability that might make it tougher for him to learn or be treated well by others. It’s too early to tell, but I’m hopeful his nerves and cells are just slowly developing and he’ll turn into a completely healthy boy
It’ll be incumbent on me and his mother to encourage him that it’s OK if he attends city college, works at Macy’s, and makes minimum wage so long as he’s tried his best. I really don’t care what type of career he has so long as he’s helping other people and finds his work rewarding. But I fear that even with our reassurances, he may not be happy.
Life has an incredible way of beating the most optimistic of us down. We like to compare our progress to others, which inevitably makes us unsatisfied.
Two Reasons For A Real Estate Empire
Once you have your living expenses covered, you can live in any of the most expensive cities in the world and be OK. By being able to provide subsidized housing (if necessary) for my son in an expensive city like San Francisco, it’ll open up more opportunities. I know so many people who are deterred from moving to places like New York City or San Francisco because of high housing costs. What a shame to be unable to pursue a dream due to cost.
After being away from the workforce for the past five years, my #1 joy from not having to work is not having to commute. It would be nice if he didn’t have to spend three hours on the road a day to work at a job he doesn’t love.
90+ minute commutes have risen due to the cost of housing increase
The second reason for owning multiple pieces of property is to give my son a job if he one day ends up jobless. I have this fear that he might not even be able to get a cashier’s job at Macy’s because Macy’s might not even be around in 23 years. Perhaps the robots will eliminate the need for most lower income jobs we have today.
Also, what if the Macy’s hiring manager is prejudice? What if his disability keeps him from getting ahead? We always hope for the best for our children, but the reality is we seldom achieve our best lives without a little bit of luck and help.
Related: The One Ingredient Necessary For Financial Independence
By having a rental property portfolio to manage, I’m hoping that if all else fails, my son can take pride managing a family asset that might one day be his. He’ll learn about real estate, negotiations, property management, people management, market trends, and so much more. I will be the most patient and loving mentor to him. From there, he might be able to build his own real estate empire.
Less than 50% of the population can afford housing in the coastal regions where many of the jobs are
A Parent’s Job Is Never Done
Nobody really told me how much you worry as a parent. It’s rather debilitating if you can’t get past thinking about all the things that could go wrong with your child, especially things that aren’t fixable due to genetics. The only thing we can give our children is lots of love and support.
As parents, perhaps the right thing to do is focus on living our best lives now so that our children can also have the best lives possible now and in the future. It’s counterproductive managing a rental property for a couple decades so my son can one day use if it’s taking quality time away from us now. Having all these hopes and dreams for our children without giving them a chance to explore on their own is unfair.
I just don’t want him to fall through the cracks. Perhaps gutting it out at a miserable job will build character. But maybe all a miserable job will do is make him a an aimless vagabond who is bitter at the world. You should see the Twitter feeds of real estate reporters who rent. It’s just misery after frustration after indignation.
It worries me if he has to go through all the things I went through to get ahead. I don’t think I could do it again if I had to start over. Further, so much of my accomplishments were directly attributable to luck. Good thing our children are more resilient than we think.
Of course I won’t tell my son of this escape hatch plan until he’s ready. Then he might get completely demotivated to make it on his own.
Only when he’s tried his best and is down on his luck will I invite him over for a beer one evening and say, “Surprise son! Everything will be OK. We’re so proud of you. We’ve got something awesome that we hope you’ll enjoy doing.” He’ll have no idea what’ll hit him because he’ll have grown up in a regular old house with frugal parents.
