My dream last night gave me the weirdest epiphany. Apparently, “people treat regional accents like they’re a party trick”
#in the dream i was in a writing seminar which was specifically how to write better fanfiction lol#and the person leading the seminar asked me about the original characters i was going to use#so i was like ‘here’s dash; he’s a shifter/werewolf; he’s from lancashire and has a strong lancastrian accent’#(can’t stress enough that dash spawned in my dream. i do not have a character by this description but in the dream he had a faceclaim etc)#some girl the other side of the room started scream-laughing at this#and the instructor said something like ‘i’m not sure why the concept of a werewolf with a lancastrian accent is funny to people’#and i without missing a beat said ‘oh it’s because people treat regional accents like party tricks. they think they’re hilarious.#when really everyone has an accent’#the girl who’d laughed stared daggers at me throughout the rest of the class#the more i think about it the more true it is though?#like whenever i’m around southerners they ask me to say ‘ey up’#and people get visibly disappointed when my accent isn’t that strong. but the exact same people make fun of me if i lapse into full-on#‘naaah then; y’awriiight?’ and ‘is that okay fer yoo?’ or even ‘am on’t’ train#if you’re from yorkshire you never say you’re on the anything. you say ont#it’s a party trick!! i’ve cracked the code#personal
