huge fan. i love to refer to him as the world's most quotable mouse. when i was seven and had just seen prince caspian in theaters my siblings and i waltzed around our house Relentlessly quoting every single reepicheep line including the lesser-known but no less iconically bitchy "we can collect nuts?" "yes! and throw them at the telmarines! SHUT UP." perhaps it's the redwall fan in me (could not tell you if i encountered narnia or redwall first) but i've always loved a mouse with a sword it's really Such a trope and i think we need one million more immediately.
that being said sometimes in dawn treader (at least the book) i did want to punt him a bit. stop trying to— reepi— REEPICHEEP sit down and STOP trying to challenge the dragon to a duel. he very much embodies lewis' ideal about how it's dishonorable Not to accept every challenge and adventure or whatever which incidentally also happens to pop up at the end of lww when susan doesn't want to keep going forward but all her siblings overrule her saying "it would be cowardly not to take the adventure that falls to us!" and then. you know. leave narnia. and clive i'm sorry i'm a little bit with susan here. i think perhaps we should not sail onwards towards the dark island. really nobody needs that. thanks.
it's a fascinating aspect of his character at any rate and i'm always a bit sad he just fucked off to aslan's country like nooo...come back reepicheep we need you serving cunt it saved the movie version along with will poulter as eustace....reepicheep NOOO....
also did you know his sword has a tiny mouse on the pommel and they forged a REAL SCALED VERSION OF IT and i don't know where it is or who has it but i would kill to get my hands on the sword of reepicheep the chief mouse....

#answered asks#slagathorius-maximus#narnia#reepicheep's sword is actually one of a few narnia props i would LOVE to have a replica of#one of the chief others being the professor's apple-shaped tobacco container#but there's just not a market for that at all so no one is making those (+ severe lack of refs for the apple)#so i can't get my hands on them without committing to some extreme work on my end to make one#and none of the skills involved in either of those are ones i possess or have much time to learn#so i just go wow. wish i could have a reepicheep sword. and then i dont

Has any one else ever imagined King Thranduil from The Hobbit meeting Bree from The Horse and His Boy? Or is it just me?
Because I have. And for some reason, I think they would be a great match.
And honestly, I want more of this little friendship that is brewing in my head.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Bree and Shasta are best mates and no one could ever sever their beautiful little sass-love-sarcastic-best-friends relationship. And no one could ever dare come between them, ‘cause you know Bree would go bree-hinny-hoo-ha-ha on them. And Shasta would stand up for Bree anytime in his sweet, kind way but with a look and stature that would make any brute shiver in his bloomers.
But can you picture it?
Two rationally pompous characters getting together and reveling in eachothers successes? I mean, I know Bree has his reasons for thinking himself the bee’s knees and all, but he does let his pride best him in quite a few situations in the book - although honestly that’s why I love him so much because it’s not at all the personality you would expect from a Talking Horse of Narnia. And in his defense, I would be pretty ecstatic about being a Narnian steed as well (you probably couldn’t shut me up about it either).
I can just imagine Thranduil being used to his ornate and majestic elks and then one day Bree comes along and absolutely shatters his view on horses. We know that Thranduil rides his elk into war, and perhaps the king also rides hardy and brawny horses every now and then, especially for short excursions through his forests. But in battle, we know him as the Elven king who rides a stinking elk into battle - and it’s the most captivating and beautiful scene in BOTFA (in my opinion). When I saw him slay umpteen orcs as he weilded his swords and his elk stay steady, I was astonshed. And the elk? Wow. He kept going on even as his rider leaned backwards and his weight was no longer distributed evenly! I was captivated. And when the elk itself picked up what, six orcs for Thranduil to decapitate? I just - oof.
But Bree, everyone.
He’s just the cat’s pajamas and I think he would really blow the king away.
He’s been trained to carry feirce warriors on his back through the ugliest and bloodiest of battles, and we already know he can outrun a lion, for pete’s sake. (I mean, yes, he lost his rider in that excursion but in his defense Shasta jumped off willingly to save Aravis...) And although Bree was running out of fear (who wouldn’t?) and lost his bravery for a fleeting moment, the result was that Bree grew stronger and gained some humility that the mare would withstand the trial for Aravis, instead of fleeing. Which also showed me that Bree is more human than most characters out there today.
Anyhoo, I can just picture a royal gathering or something in the like and some Kingdoms of Middle-Earth travel into Narnia for a ball, or perhaps some large day-picnic by the seaside of Cair Paravel. And in the progression of the event, Thranduil is introduced to this brave young Talking Horse who introduces himself with a healthy confidence - and they are in cahoots off the bat. Thranduil takes a polite swig of his punch that is cradled in his decorated hand and Bree neighs in his brinny-hinny-hoo-hee-ha way.
Thranduil inviting him to take shade under his tent, immediately having his servants make him comfortable with cool plush cushions and glass - bowl ??? - of that remarkable punch that the fauns had brought out at luncheon. Bree being absolutely flabbergasted at such a kind gesture from such a great king.
Can’t you just picture them talking about battles together?
Thranduil talking about his elks, explaining why he never rides a horse into battle?
And Bree telling him of his adventures with a lost prince - that he never doubted for a second, don’t you know - and a runaway princess - that he always thought was rather smart and delightful ?
Thranduil fastly admiring this quite outspoken and intelligent steed - even with his peculiar habit of melodic whinnying every few sentences.
And Bree would be absolutley in awe of this Elven king with such impeccable manners and such flamboyant robes. He would comment on his good taste, his stature, his manner.
“I always thought to myself, and even told young Prince Shasta ha-hoo-hee, that if I had in fact been a creature that could don robes and such fine things, I would dress in the finest - the most regal, such as you wear, sire. Hinny-hoo-ha. But I am not, so I subject myself to a regular shoe shining whenever I can get it- oh, and rose petals in my trough, it adds just a bite of sweet.”
I can picture them watching the others in the shade of other tents and making small comments to jest about (not rude comments, but much like two old men going on about silly nothings that are very important to them). Such as commenting about Lucy pelting sand at her siblings, at the amount of sand in Edmund’s hair, the screaming of Shasta being higher-pitched than Aravis as they ran through the cool tide of the sea. Thranduil commenting on Elrond’s choice of fabric, wondering where he got it imported from. Admiring the sweets and Thranduil asking what on Middle-Earth was this ‘turkish delight’? He must have some sent home to the Greenwood some time before the holidays began.
Thranduil: I never could get used to sand. It is quite hot and gets all over your robes.
Bree: Oh-hinny-hoo-ha, I do agree, sire. It gets inbetweenst all your fur-hur-hee-hoos. I have always preferred the countryside. Hoo-hee-brinny-ha.
(sorry for the exageration of Bree’s neighing but I find it adorable and everytime C.S. Lewis weaved it into his dialogue I broke into laughter).
I dont’ know, am I the only one that finds this very hilarious and highly entertaining? I just love these two (slightly self-centered (just a tad) but we’ll excuse it because they are pretty great). I would love to see something like this, although the probability of anything like this coming into fruition would be seen as ludicracy.
But alas, I’ll stick to my day-dreaming until then.
I think I will write more on this at some point in the future...
Bree: Your crown is impeccable, sir. How I do admire the craftsmenship of your people. I do wish I could keep one upon my head, though it is quite unseemly.
Thranduil: Perhaps I could have one made for you? An ear-peice such as the little mouse wears? It is quite dashing. I think I shall have my tailors take note of it...I need a new accents for my Autumn crown... I think a gold feather would be fitting for you, though, master Bree. Such a regal color. Or perhaps plum?
Reep: Did someone say mouse? I am a warrior of Aslan, people!
(Even though Reepicheep is much later on in the series I couldn’t resist...)
I have to stop now before I write a novel about this - plus Pride and Prejudice (1940) is on Turner Classic Movies and I must go to Mr. Darcy.
But -
I just LOVE THIS SO MUCH.
AND IT’S TOLKIEN AND LEWIS TOGETHER AGAIN.
(gif creds to creators whomever they may be, I found them on google)
