A Chapter in My Life by Karen Kitchel

I was honored when asked to write a couple of chapters to include in this wonderful book celebrating the gifts of positive voices.  My hope in contributing my stories was to inspire others to think about two of my favorite topics -- adoption and mentoring.  It was the first time I publicly shared my struggles to adopt my daughter, and also an opportunity to introduce the idea of mentoring to someone who may have never considered it.

I am now the proud owner of the very first book published since I couldn't wait to see what everyone else had written.  While waiting for my supply of more books, I loaned my copy to my 93-year-old Mother who loves to read.  She said she not only enjoyed the many interesting topics, but she especially liked the suggestions at the end of each chapter which makes you think about how you can apply what you just read to your own life.  One of her favorite chapters, written by Cynthia Brian, is the Gift of Longevity, and Mom says if you follow Cynthia's 20 rules, you just might become an antique -- and that's a good thing!

I had the pleasure of meeting Cynthia Brian several years ago when we both were managing nonprofits. I was quickly impressed with her values, strong work ethic and the myriad of abilities. It didn't matter that Cynthia lives in California and I am in Minnesota. We found exchanging ideas quickly grew into a wonderful friendship, which is another gift we just might have to write about!
