I say “simple” because… it’s not. I mean, it’s not stupid simple. I had to do a bit of troubleshooting to make it all work properly. But once it was set, it ran smoothly, and it was easily integrated with…

Mailchimp

There are other email marketing services, of course, but Mailchimp is an obvious choice for musicians who don’t have huge lists, and who need some basic automation tools. Plus Mailchimp is easily integrated with ClickFunnels, and can be integrated with almost any app via Zapier.

If you do a Free + Shipping campaign, you’re going to want to send a bunch of emails along the way, and you don’t want to send them manually!

Mailchimp is a good solution for sending triggered emails, including:

the confirmation email

the “Did you get the CD?” email

the “Please leave a review or post a pic” email

the “Now that you’ve got a copy of the CD, lemme tell you all kinds of crazy things about the album” emails

the “Hey, I noticed you left your contact info, but never paid for shipping” email

Mailchimp also gives you an easy way to tag and segment subscribers, so you can send all the emails mentioned above to the appropriate people at the appropriate time.

Stripe

Stripe is a payment system, and it’s pretty much free to use. If you’re setting up a F+S campaign on your own site without ClickFunnels, you might be able to set something up via PayPal too.

ShipStation

If you were shipping hundreds of CDs a day, I’d recommend something like ShipStation that helps you manage your orders, print shipping labels, etc. But it also costs a monthly fee to use, so I ended up cancelling my subscription because my order volume didn’t require it. I could access all the customer info I needed from within ClickFunnels and copy-and-paste from there (you could probably set up a Zapier automation to handle the same tasks).

The keys to success with a Free CD offer

The “order bump”

If I haven’t stressed it enough, it’s ALL about the order bump. This is what helps you break even or make a profit.

In my case, after the customer has entered their payment info to cover the shipping costs for the FREE CD, an offer appears for my previous album Ghosts’ Menagerie at a significant discount.

  More than 50% of the people claiming the free CD of The Great Make Believer ALSO ordered Ghosts’ Menagerie. To drive the point home, THIS is the reason why I didn’t lose money. 

The “upsell”

After they select whether or not they want the order bump, they’re taken to another page with an offer for an upsell. In my case, a t-shirt. At a discount, today, and today only.

At some point I ran out of t-shirts and shut this upsell off, but up until then I believe somewhere between 15-20% of the people who got the free CD also bought a t-shirt.

Time limits and scarcity

I ended up leaving this offer running, but (do as I say and not as I do) I believe messaging like “Only 100 CDs left” or “For the next two weeks” can go a long way towards creating urgency and getting fans to act now.

Use easily-identified visual reference points

If you’re putting this offer on social feeds, you need to cut through the noise. Which means your pictures or videos should have something that grabs people’s attention in the first few seconds.

I knew I had fairly big custom audience on Facebook who’d watched at least 75% of my “Anonymous” music video, where I lip-synced backwards, so when the video is flipped it looks like everything is defying gravity.

Because that was going to be my first audience to test the offer, I thought my video explaining the offer should have a similar look, just to remind people who I was without them even needing to have the sound on (see my offer video towards the top of this page).

For your offer video, think of some familiar visual queues you can include that your audience will quickly respond to (color schemes, a logo, references to past videos, etc.)

Use “inner circle” talk

Play up the fact that this FREE CD offer is for your BEST followers, your TRUE fans, and it’s a THANK YOU. That show of intimacy and appreciation will help with conversion.

Repeat the message

Peeps need to hear things many times before they act. So keep sharing this offer on social and email throughout the life of the campaign. Segment out those who HAVE converted so you’re not bugging them, repeat the message a dozen times to everyone else, and try a few different creative approaches (video, text, still images).

Paid ads are your friend

Well, a friend you pay for. Which I guess isn’t a friend. But you know what I mean. You’re gonna depend on paid ads or boosted posts to spread awareness of the offer, and repeat the message enough to give those interested fans a chance to claim their free CD. And on that topic…

It’s already THEIRS

As you explain the offer, don’t treat it like a purchase. Tell your fans the signed CD is already theirs. They just have to claim it. This kind of language will reduce the friction for paying the shipping.

Lean on your list

As much as you may want to convert your Facebook engagement audiences into email subscribers, your existing email list will inevitably yield the best results for the lowest (no-est) cost. That’s fine.

Yes, they’re already on your list, who who cares? You’re helping those existing subscribers dive deeper into your music, and maybe selling some of those extra merch items too.

Segment

I said it above: Segment your lists and audiences, and communicate accordingly. If you’re worried that previous customers who purchased the CD will be offended you’re now offering it for free, segment out those customers by using Mailchimp tags, CD Baby sales info, CSV files from PledgeMusic, KickStarter, Bandcamp, and so forth.

That being said, I don’t think a true fan will care if they paid for something three years ago that you’re now offering for free. We get how the real world works, right?

Popups, announcement bars, headers, YouTube channel trailers…

Use whatever marketing real estate you have on your website and social profiles to spread the word.

LAST CHANCE messaging!

Create some urgency as your campaign comes to a close; be sure to tell folks when they only have a week left, a day left, an hour left, to claim their signed CD for FREE.

I’d planned to do this, but then decided to leave my campaign running. That being said, whenever we run a sale at CD Baby, it’s almost always the case that we see a big spike in the final day or two before the deal expires.

GIVE more than you GET

Impress the people who care about your music. Include extra goodies, notes, etc.

At first, my free CD came with an easily digestible behind-the-scenes essay about the album, printed on a fancy piece of paper, and autographed. Later I found a couple boxes of some older posters  and started throwing those in the packages for free as well. I don’t mention these in the offer video; they’re just surprises that come with the free CD.

Deploy your welcome sequence

Auto-add both leads and customers to your email list. Then trigger a welcome sequence that brings them closer to your music. In these emails, don’t ASK anything from them. They just took a leap of faith getting your CD. Give them a chance to breathe. 

Your automated follow-up helps you AND them

Write an automated follow-up email that goes out about two weeks after they claim their CD, asking if they got it.

Do they like it? If so, ask them to please share pics on social, or leave a review, or tell a friend about the deal, or add their favorite track to a playlist.

This email also keeps YOU on your toes, because you’ve GOT to ship things NOW if you know an automated email will be triggered two week from now.

It’s exciting to watch the orders come in, but it takes TIME to actually sit down, sign, pack, and mail all these orders. Don’t procrastinate.

Retarget non-conversions

As I mentioned above, if someone provided contact info but didn’t pay for shipping, they’re considered “leads” in ClickFunnels. You still get their email address. An equivalent audience would be someone who you’ve tracked onto the offer landing page via a Facebook pixel, but the person didn’t arrive at the next page, whether it be an upsell, confirmation, or thank-you page. 

Gather those leads, and see if you can get them interested in the offer again. Maybe they backed out because they were busy and there’s a better time for them to finish completing the process.

Syndicate your fans’ excitement to FB, IG, IG Stories, Twitter, and beyond

“Syndicate!”

I just wanted to use that word. But seriously, if someone gets their free signed CD in the mail and shares a picture on social — re-gram, retweet, share away. That way you get to broadcast or replay the excitement without having to be the author of the message.

Have a plan for what’s next

A F+S&H campaign is a lot of work to create and manage, so make sure you have your next step in mind.

Are you building your list to prepare for a new album? To stir interest in an upcoming tour?

When you pull the plug on this free CD offer, you don’t want to wait TOO long to replace it with some new kind of campaign, whether it be releasing the next album, launching a video, or selling new merch. 

Don’t disappear. Build.

I hope this article gives you an idea for how to put some old merch to work for you again, build your list, get some fans off the fence, and make some money while you’re at it. It’s a bit of work to set it all up, but for me it’s been worth it — and fun!

How to know timeshare is a bad idea?

So, you did it. You fell for the sales pitch and now you own a timeshare. And you’re out several grand. What to do? Consider these options.

1. Check Your Contract

Many timeshare contracts contain a recission or retraction period. This can be called a “cooling off” period. It’s a period of time after you signed the contract in which you can cancel. No questions asked.

The “cooling off” time period is typically just a few days long. In some states, certain requirements must be met before the time period begins.

Check with your state’s attorney general if your contract is unclear. But check the recission terms on the contract first.

If your timeshare purchase is recent, you may be covered. You may be able to annul the contract.

Note that official contract cancellations usually require written notice. So, plan on writing the timeshare company a letter. Sign it and keep a copy for yourself.

Note the date of mailing as well. Send it registered mail for extra protection. Your attorney general’s office can help you with the details.

2. See if the Company Will Buy it Back

In some cases, the timeshare company will buy it back. This is rare, but it does happen. Note that they likely won’t give you full price in a buyback.

Yes, you could lose money. Your timeshare contract should talk about buybacks. Some companies buy them back, others don’t. If yours does, contact them to see what their buyback terms are.

3. See if the Company Will Take it Back for Free

Some companies won’t buy timeshares back. However, they will take them for free. Yes, this is a colossal loss of cash.

However, remember that the goal is to stop paying fees. Annual fees on timeshares can add up fast. Some cost several hundred dollars a year to maintain.

You may lose thousands by giving your timeshare back. That’s hard to swallow. But don’t lose thousands more by keeping it if you don’t want it.

4. Sell Your Timeshare

In some cases, you can sell your timeshare to someone else. As with the buyback, you’ll likely sell it for less than you paid.

You can use a site designated for timeshare sales to advertise. lets people list timeshares for sale.

Note that companies like these charge fees to sell your timeshare. Read the fine print. Be aware of all fees before listing your timeshare on a sales site.

You could advertise on a free site, too. Craigslist and similar sites will let you sell a timeshare for free.

Have a company do it for you

Similarly, you could get help with your timeshare exit. Companies like Newton Group can assist. They’ve been helping people exit timeshares for over a decade.

They have an A+ rating with the BBB and they were a Torch Awards for Ethics Finalist in 2018.

5. Give Your Timeshare Away

The truth is, you might have trouble selling your timeshare. If you’ve tried and failed, consider giving it away. At least you can get out of the annual fees then.

You won’t get up front cash. But you will get out of annual fees.

This might seem like a bad deal to you. After all, you paid thousands of dollars to buy your timeshare. But consider this: You’ll pay thousands more in annual fees if you don’t get rid of it.

Why Timeshares Can Be a Bad Idea

You may be wondering what’s so bad about timeshares. After all, they cost much less than owning a vacation home. And much less than paying for a full vacation every year.

While that may be true, there are several downsides to timeshares. Consider these negatives before you buy one.

You’re Stuck With One Company

Some timeshares make you keep your week at your resort. You go the same place year after year. That can get boring.

Other timeshare companies have several resorts. They allow you to trade your week for one somewhere else.

Or, you can stay somewhere else if you pay an extra fee. While this sounds good, you’re still locked into the one company. You can’t vacation with no boundaries.

I know several people who bought timeshares but don’t use them. They mean to, but things get in the way. Maybe it’s their schedule. Or that they no longer love the destination.

Timeshare sales pitches thrive on spur-of-the-moment impulses. The new and shiny idea sounds wonderful. There are bells and whistles and sparkly things.

Then reality sets in and it’s not as great as it once seemed. Or you just get too busy. Then you’re out the money and the vacation.

They Cost a LOT

Another reason timeshares can be a bad idea is because of upfront cost. Many units cost $15,000 or more at the outset.

When you add on annual fees, they get expensive. Wouldn’t it be better to spend your money how and where you choose?

They Don’t Appreciate in Value

Unlike most real estate, timeshare don’t appreciate. The value of the building is irrelevant to timeshare owners. You’re buying the time, not a piece of the building.

It’s kind of like buying a new car. The value decreases as soon as you leave the lot. Or in this case, sign the contract.

Therefore your investment won’t increase in value. This is different than if you bought a vacation home outright.

Those buying timeshares from sellers get a much better deal. Resale prices on timeshares are significantly lower than the original sale prices. If you insist on owning a timeshare, buy used.

With investment real estate, you earn income. If you rent out a home, you collect rent.

That rule doesn’t hold true with timeshares. They cost you money. But they won’t earn you income.

As I’ve mentioned, timeshares aren’t an asset. But if they were, they wouldn’t be liquid. A liquid asset can be quickly sold to get cash.

On the contrary, timeshares are tough to unload. People have trouble giving them away.

You’ll see dozens of timeshares selling for $0 or $1 just sitting there without buyers.

There’s a reason no one’s buying them. They just don’t make sense, money-wise.

That’s not to say that a small percentage of buyers aren’t happy with them. They can be good for some people.

30 Easy Ways to Save Money You Probably Aren’t Doing Yet

Let’s keep this one simple and clean – just a bunch of relatively easy ways to save money. As you incorporate more and more of these tips into your life, the savings add up and it wouldn’t surprise me if you could save thousands over the course of a year.

It will take a little work on your part but those thousands of dollars in savings are what helped us get out of debt earlier and kept us out of debt for several years . Hopefully, it’ll help us pay off our recent auto loan soon as well.

Cook at home often

If both the husband and wife work, this is likely to be very difficult. Start out with the habit of cooking at home once a week and slowly increase the frequency until you find a balance between saving money and getting stressed out.

Make your own coffee

Everyone seems to have heard of the latte factor. Even though the author may have overestimated the savings from skipping a latte at Starbucks, don’t underestimate the ding it puts in your pocket in the long run. You don’t have to entirely ban drinking coffee, but skip it as often as possible- unless you make it at home.

Brown bag lunch at least a few days a week

Lunch times are great opportunities to network and make connections that could improve your career growth. So, unless there is a common eating area for brown baggers, you may choose to limit brown bagging lunch to three days each week.

Find a balance between saving some money and making the connection. In my case, I take my lunch with me 2 to 3 times a week and eat out the rest of the time.

Make a list before going shopping

They call it impulse buying for a reason.

Humans simply have a very tough time resisting the temptation to purchase extras while shopping. Without a list, you will likely buy items that you simply do not need. Even worse is when your forget to purchase the actual item you came to the store for in the first place.

If you plan on cooking at home, pre-plan a rough menu and make a list before you go grocery shopping. Getting all that you need in one trip can help avoid another unnecessary trip and temptation.

Go grocery shopping while you are in a hurry

Maybe you need to go out in a couple of hours or your favorite show is going to be on TV after a couple of hours. Try to squeeze in the grocery trip in that intermediate time.

Armed with your grocery list, you should be in-and-out very quickly with little time for meandering and getting tempted to buy things you don’t need.

Watch out for expiration dates on perishable goods

This one seems intuitive when you read it, but I am surprised at how many people do not pay attention to expiry dates. No point getting a gallon of milk if it is going to turn sour with a couple of days. Same goes for meat, eggs, yogurt, spreads, frozen items, and deli/bakery items.

Some people say you can use a few items a few days after expiry but I personally value my health more than money. I would rather avoid buying such items in the first place. 

Buy in bulk whenever possible

When it comes to non-perishable items, buy in bulk whenever you find something on sale. The items I usually stock up on are, cereals, tinned goods, rice, beans, pasta, coke, toothpaste, body wash, shampoo, toilet paper, etc.

For such items, shopping at warehouse stores like Costco and Sam’s Club can save you quite a bit of money- that is if you stick strictly to your shopping list when you shop.

Buy generic products whenever possible

Does it really matter whether your cereal is made by Kellogg’s or is the store brand? Does it matter if your milk is Oak Farms or the store brand?

For a few things (like soda in particular), I prefer brand name products. For others, I do not mind generic store brands if they can save me money. Find what works for you and switch to generic brands for at least a part of your grocery list. 

Use grocery store bags to line trash cans

This may not work if you use a massive trash can but we use a small sized one for which the grocery bags are a perfect fit. This not only helps us save some money, but reduces our environmental foot print. It avoids the kitchen from stinking from a huge overflowing trash can, too.

Consolidate and pay off debt as soon as possible

If you carry any debt, focus on consolidating it to a lower interest and paying it off as soon as possible. Money paid in interest is money thrown away! Why spend your hard-earned cash to make the financial institutions rich?

Pay your bills on time and avoid late fees

Get organized about your regular bills. If possible, automate the payments. Most utilities and other recurring bills can be set to be charged to a credit card or deducted from a checking account these days.

Also, many banks offer free bill pay programs. There really is no excuse for forgetting to pay a bill on time and forking out the late fees.

Say, by chance you do forget a bill, if you are a first time offender, call the company and request politely to waive the late fees. More likely than not, they will oblige.

Be aware of your bank balance and avoid over draft fees

If you use your checking account often or have some bills that are paid automatically from your checking account, be aware of the balance and avoid overdraft fees. 

Avoid ATM fees

Be aware of the ATM withdrawal fees charged by your bank. While some banks waive fees for all ATM transactions on any ATM machine, most don’t.

So, be sure to use only those ATM machines where your bank will not charge the fees or withdraw directly at your bank. 

Avoid credit cards with annual fee

Credit cards with their cash back bonuses and reward points are a great way to save some money. Just make sure that the card does not charge you any annual fees. There is no dearth of cards that offer fee-free reward plans, so there really is no reason to pay the annual fees. 

Disconnect land line if possible

Unless you have small kids in the house or older people to take care of, it is more than likely that you will be able to survive with only your mobile phones.

We have survived without any problems for over 4 years now without a land line. Our Internet comes via cable. 

Instead of buying books, borrow books from the library

Whenever possible, borrow your books instead of buying them. The card to your public library is free and the libraries are generally well stocked.

In my city, the chain of public libraries is connected and the available books can be checked online. If there is some book that I cannot find in my local branch, I can make a request online for it to be brought in from one of the other branches to mine which is very convenient. 

If you have to buy books, check if you can buy it used

Used books do not quite give the same feeling as leafing through the crisp pages of a brand new book. However, considering that you can get used books for almost as much as half the price of a new book, it is a small price to pay.

My favorite place to buy used books is a local chain called “Half Price Book Store”. Check if you have something similar in your city. For text books, look online on bulletin boards, and mailing lists and price compare on websites like addall.com. 

Price check before buying anything expensive

For other items that are expensive, do a price check before buying the item. If you can wait for a while, you can track the prices and grab a great deal when it comes along.

Frequently available online coupons make it even more easy to save some money. This is especially true while purchasing any electronics. 

Avoid impulse buying

Make it a habit to avoid impulse buying. Many of the things you want to buy do not seem all that necessary, if you only you wait for a day or two. Also, waiting means you will be able to check prices and make an informed decision to buy it at the best possible price. 

Bottle your own water

Drinking water is good for your health. I always make it a habit to keep some at my desk at all times. Bottled water is the most convenient since it can provide protection against accidental spills. That said, buy bottled water only once in a while and then reuse that bottle to fill your own water. If you are not happy with tap water, invest in a Brita Filter – in the long run it can save a lot of money. 

Avoid the vending machines

Almost everything that is dispensed via vending machines has a huge markup (and is rarely healthy). However, if you suffer from snack attacks at work, consider creating a secret stash of snacks.

If you like drinking soda and have a fridge at the workplace, save a refrigerator pack in the fridge with a post-it with your name on it. If you have a long commute, consider a stash for the car as well and avoid a quick drive-thru visit. 

Keep your car as long as possible

When possible, try to keep your car as long as possible. Find the balance between the money spent on repairs versus the monthly installment on another vehicle. Choose to run your old car as long as the repair costs are low. 

Do regular scheduled maintenance on your vehicles

Do not skimp on or forget to do regular oil changes. Remember to check the air in your tires often. Use the grade of fuel that the owner’s manual recommends. These small acts can significantly lengthen the life of your car, giving you years of use. 

Avoid buying a new car

When you eventually buy a car, see if you can make do with a pre-owned vehicle. A new car depreciates significantly the moment you drive it out the dealership.

Pre-owned cars that are only a few years old with low mileage are the best bargains. Regardless of the purchase, learn to negotiate with car dealers. 

Ride your bike or carpool whenever possible

In many of the cities in the US, it is hard to get by without a car. That said, just because you have a car does not mean you have to use it every day. Whenever possible, ride your bike or share a ride with a colleague or spouse and save both on gas and reduce the environmental footprint. 

If you watch a lot of DVDs, get an online DVD store membership

Membership to online movie stores like Netflix or Blockbuster Online can save you a lot of money compared to buying DVDs or renting it from a local store. You need to wait once you order the movie, but if you watch a lot of movies at home, then you can easily get into the habit of ordering ahead of time so you always have something at home.

If you are patient and your library has the resources, check to see if they have a movie section. You won’t get anything very new, but they are free. 

If you like watching movies at the theater, go before 6:00 pm

This is one of our soft spots when it comes to spending. We really like watching movies in the theater with the big screen and the great sound effects. But instead of paying $10 a pop for the ticket, we usually go before 6:00 pm when the tickets are a little less expensive.

Also, for movies that we don’t absolutely want to watch right away, we just wait until it screens on the discount theater where the tickets are $2 a pop. We avoid the temptation to buy snacks by usually going for a theater some time soon after our lunch. Sometimes, we sneak in our own snacks.

Regulate your electric use

When not in use, unplug electric appliances. Apparently, unplugging the TV instead of just switching it off can save a lot of electricity!

When not in a room, switch off the lights and the fan. Use a programmable thermostat to control your A/C and heater usage. If that’s too much, at least know what each appliance uses and unplug a few of them. 

Plan vacations ahead of time

Vacations are a necessary part of saving our sanity in the busy lives that we lead. But vacations are also a huge drain on the family finances.

You can cut the cost of a vacation significantly by planning and booking ahead of time. Bookmark travel sites for finding inexpensive airfare and hotel. Book at least two weeks in advance.

Finally, keep distance from lavish, high-roller friends

If you have lavish friends who buy a new car every other year (or worse still, lease it), have large screen TVs and every other conceivable electronics gadget, eat out at fancy restaurants every other night and just live way beyond their means, keep the distance.

They may be nice people and mean you no harm, but hanging out with such people can often lead to a lot of unnecessary desires and discontent. What’s more important – your friends or your peace of mind?

Whoa, that article ended up being a lot longer than I anticipated. Hopefully, I haven’t put you to sleep! Despite the length though, it barely scratches the surface when it comes to ways to save money. Make it a sub-conscious habit to save money in things that you do every day, even if it is a few dollars. All that money saved can add up significantly and you can save it or spend it on things that really matter!

NOTE: I am not saying that you should follow *all* these tips. Trying to be too frugal can make both you and the people around you very miserable. So, pick out a few tips at a time that will work for you and make them a habit, before deciding if you can incorporate more money saving habits in your daily routine. Here are some answers sent from our e-newsletter readers to Editor Dave Harper.

  The market for proof silver Eagles is currently saturated. In the last six months, wholesale values have dropped considerably for past years’ issues. With slack demand, issuing two different 2018 proof silver Eagles will be a bonanza for collectors with the foresight to buy them.

If I buy any, they will immediately drop in value after I receive them in the mail. So, I will probably buy mine on the secondary market after they appreciate in value.
