It seems like many, perhaps most, people historically believed in some immanent apocalypse.

Many philosophies claim that the world is passing into a degenerate age of chaos (Ages of Man, Kali Yuga, life-cycle of civilisation), or divine conflict will shortly spill over & destroy the Earth (Ragnorok, Revelations, Zoroastrian Frashokereti), or that the natural forces sustaining us must be transient.

Yet few panic or do anything. What anyone does "do about it" is often symbolic & self-admittedly unlikely to do much.

Maybe humans evolved not to care, to avoid being manipulated?

Many cults make similar claims, and do uproot their lives around them. Even very rarely committing mass suicide or terror attacks etc on occasion. But cults exist that don't make such claims, so it may not be the mechanism they use to control, or at most a minor one. "This is about the fate of the whole world, nothing can be more important than that, so shut up" may work as as a thought terminating cliche, but it doesn't seem to work that strongly, and there are many at least equally effective ones.

Some large scale orgs do exist that seem to take their eschatology "seriously". The Aztecs committed atrocities trying to hold off apocalypse, ISIS trying to cause it. Arguably some Communist or even fascist groups count, depending on your definition of apocalypse.

But even then, one can argue their actions are not radically different from non-apocalypse-motivated ones - e.g. the Aztecs mass-executed less per capita than the UK did at times & some historians view them as more about displaying authority.

I'm thinking about this because of two secular eschatologies - climate apocalypse and the Singularity.

My view on climate change, which as far as I can tell is the scientific consensus, is that it is real and bad but by no means apocalyptic. We're talking incremental increases in storms, droughts, floods etc, all of which are terrible, but none of which remotely threaten human civilisation. E.g. according to the first Google result, the sea is set to rise by 1 decimeter by 2100 in a "high emissions scenario", not to rise by tens or hundreds of meters and consume all coastal nations as I was taught as a child. Some more drastic projections suggest that the sea might rise by as much as two or three meters in the worst case scenario.

It really creeps me out when I hear people who confess to believe that human civilisation, the human species, or even all life on Earth is most likely going to be destroyed soon by climate change. The most recent example, which prompted this post, was the Call of Cthulhu podcast I was listening to casually suggesting that it might be a good idea to summon an Elder God of ice and snow to combat climate change as the "lesser existential risk", perhaps by sacrificing "climate skeptics" to it. It's incredibly jarring for me to realise that the guys I've been listening to casually chatting about RPGs think they live in a world that will shortly be ended by the greed of it's rulers. But this idea is everywhere. Discussions of existential risks from e.g. pandemics inevitably attract people arguing that the real existential risk is climate change. A major anti-global-warming protest movement, Extinction Rebellion, is literally named after the idea that they're fighting against their own extinction. Viral Tumblr posts talk about how the fear of knowing that the world is probably going to be destroyed soon by climate change and fascism is crippling their mental health, and they have no idea how to deal with it because it's all so real.

But it's not. It's not real.

Well, I can't claim that political science is accurate enough for me to definitively say that fascism isn't going to take over, but I can say that climate science is fairly accurate and it predicts that the world is definitely not about to end in fire or in flood.

(There are valid arguments that climate change or other environmental issues might precipitate wars, which could turn apocalyptic due to nuclear weapons; or that we might potentially encounter a black swan event due to our poor understanding of the ecosystem and climate-feedback systems. But these are very different, as they're self-admittedly "just" small risks to the world.)

And I get the impression that a lot of people with more realistic views about climate change deliberately pander to this, deliberately encouraging people to believe that they're going to die because it puts them on the "right side of the issue". The MCU's Loki, for instance, recently casually brought up a "climate apocalypse" in 2050, which many viewers took as meaning the world ending. Technically, the show uses a broad definition of "apocalypse" - Pompeii is given as another example - and it kind of seems like maybe all they meant was natural disasters encouraged by climate change, totally defensible. But I still felt kinda mad about it, that they're deliberately pandering to an idea which they hopefully know is false and which is causing incredible anxiety in people. I remember when Greta Thurnberg was a big deal, I read through her speeches to Extinction Rebellion, and if you parsed them closely it seemed like she actually did have a somewhat realistic understanding of what climate change is. But she would never come out and say it, it was all vague implications of doom, which she was happily giving to a rally called "Extinction Rebellion" filled with speakers who were explicitly stating, not just coyly implying, that this was a fight for humanity's survival against all the great powers of the world.

But maybe there's nothing wrong with that. I despise lying, but as I've been rambling about, this is a very common lie that most people somehow seem unaffected by. Maybe the viral tumblr posts are wrong about the source of their anxiety; maybe it's internal/neurochemical and they world just have picked some other topic to project their anxieties on if this particular apocalypse wasn't available. Maybe this isn't a particularly harmful lie, and it's hypocritical of me to be shocked by those who believe it.

Incidentally, I believe the world is probably going to end within the next fifty years.

Intellectually, I find the arguments that superhuman AI will destroy the world pretty undeniable. Sure, forecasting the path of future technology is inherently unreliable. But the existence of human brains, some of which are quite smart, proves pretty conclusively it's possible to get lumps of matter to think - and human brains are designed to run on the tiny amounts of energy they can get by scavenging plants and the occasional scraps of meat in the wilderness as fuel, with chemical signals that propagate at around the speed of sound (much slower than electronic ones), with only the data they can get from input devices they carry around with them, and which break down irrevocably after a few decades. And while we cannot necessarily extrapolate from the history of progress in both computer hardware and AI, that progress is incredibly impressive, and there's no particular reason to believe it will fortuitously stop right before we manufacture enough rope to hang ourselves.

Right now, at time of writing, we have neural nets that can write basic code, appear to scale linearly in effectiveness with the available hardware with no signs that we're reaching their limit, and have not yet been applied at the current limits of available hardware let alone what will be available in a few years. They absorb information like a sponge at a vastly superhuman speed and scale, allowing them to be trained in days or hours rather than the years or decades humans require. They are already human-level or massively superhuman at many tasks, and are capable of many things I would have confidently told you a few years ago were probably impossible without human-level intelligence, like the crazy shit AI dungeon is capable of. People are actively working on scaling them up so that they can work on and improve the sort of code they are made from. And we have no ability to tell what they're thinking or control them without a ton of trial and error.

If you follow this blog, you're probably familiar with all the above arguments for why we're probably very close to getting clobbered by superhuman AI, and many more, as well as all the standard counter-arguments and the counter-arguments to those counter arguments.

(Note: I do take some comfort in God, but even if my faith were so rock solid that I would cheerfully bet the world on it - which it's not - there's no real reason why our purpose in God's plan couldn't be to destroy ourselves or be destroyed as an object lesson to some other, more important civilization. There's ample precedent.)

Here's the thing: I'm not doing anything about it, unless you count occasionally, casually talking about it with people online. I'm not even donating to help any of the terrifyingly-few people who are trying to do something about it. Part of why I'm not contributing is, frankly, I don't have a clue what to do, nor do I have much confidence in any of the stuff people are currently doing (although I bloody well hope some of it works.)

And yet I don't actually feel that scared.

I feel more of a visceral chill reading about the nuclear close calls that almost destroyed the world in the recent past than thinking about the stuff that has a serious chance of doing so in a few decades. I'm a neurotic mess, and yet what is objectively the most terrifying thing on my radar does not actually seem to contribute to my neurosis.

Alright listen up folks: Raya and the Last Dragon is a fantastic animated fantasy film and I’m a bit disappointed that it did not become more of A Thing. Pretty much everything I would have wanted from this movie when watching the trailer is what I got in this movie.

So, here we go:

Raya and the Last Dragon tells the story of Raya in the land of Kumandra. Kumandra had water dragons that made everything great by providing water and helping people. But then these creatures called the Druun invaded, and had this nasty habit of turning humans and dragons into stone. The last dragon, Sisu, used her magic to create the Dragon Gem to banish the Druun. But people’s greed for the gem’s power makes them divide into different feuding tribes living on different sections of the river that runs through Kumandra (which happens to be shaped like a dragon, so they’re named after different parts of the dragon).

Raya’s father, the chieftain of the Heart tribe, holds a meeting to try to get the tribes to work things out. This meeting goes… badly, the Gem gets broken and divided among the tribes, the Druun come back, and six years later the only hope Raya has is to chase after the rumor that Sisu is still out there, and hope that she can recreate the miracle of the Dragon Gem and stop the Druun a second time. Except Sisu isn’t… quite the miracle worker everyone thinks she is.

And so Raya and Sisu go on a quest throughout Kumandra to collect the Dragon Gem fragments while avoiding the Druun, and fighting Namaari, the princess of the Fang tribe, who has a personal vendetta with Raya.

First off--fight scenes in this movie are dope. I do not recall a CGI animated film that had fight scenes as good as what we see in this movie (maybe I have and I just don’t remember). They’re fun to watch, imbued with a unique energy that makes it stand out. Raya’s sword is one of the coolest movie weapons I’ve  seen.

Second: this movie does a wasted fantasy setting really well? Many times when people want to convey a desolate landscape in a fantasy setting, they’re just bare of cities and frightened peasants are everywhere. One of the things we see fairly early on in this film is the places where there are just statues of people turned to stone, and plenty of the dwelling places have just been abandoned because of the invading Druun. We never see any statues get smashed or worn down, but it’s still eerie because you have hundreds of people that are just… gone because they’ve been turned to stone.

The movie’s got well-done and likable characters, good dialogue, and it’s beautiful to look at. There’s also the added plus that, as far as I can tell, it doesn’t have this now-annoying “We’re not like other Disney movies!” thing that has become almost standard in Disney animated films of late.

There is this weird thing about the movie in that it’s very obviously based off of Southeast Asian culture in its design and language. Sisu, for instance, looks like what you’d get if you crossed an East Asian dragon with a naga. Except the voice cast is mostly made up of performers of East Asian descent? It’s a bit weird that for Moana Disney made a point to hire a cast of Pacific Island descent, and Coco has a Hispanic cast. With this film, at best it feels like a bit of a missed opportunity, and at worst it seems as if perhaps the people at Disney doesn’t know the difference.

Mind you, Hollywood is like that sometimes. Hispanic performers of every nationality tend to get cast as every Hispanic nationality. And British actors get cast as Americans and vice versa all the time. Still, representation matters, and it would have been nice to see more accurate representation in the cast. The cast we do have for this movie is very talented though, and I want to emphasize that I don’t mean this as a criticism of the cast that we got. They did a fantastic job.

The pacing for this movie felt a bit too fast at first. There’s the journey for the gem pieces, and the first couple it seems to breeze through. But I understand that having a drawn-out set of sequences for each piece would make the movie much longer than it needed to be, and I can’t say I mind that the Plot moved forward in a way that didn’t sacrifice character development.

Another problem that I think audiences might have with the film is that it’s pretty heavy-handed about its message. The problem of the world and its characters is lack of trust; if people trusted each other instead of assuming everyone else was only out for themselves, they wouldn’t be in this mess. This will be hammered into your skull over and over again by the end of the movie. And I don’t mind so much--we live in a world where much of our conflict is based off of the assumption that the other side wants to murder us and that leads to people taking extreme reactions. And that has disastrous consequences. I think it’s a good message, but I think it could be a bit more nuanced in its delivery. Mind you, it does bring up that it’s not always as easy as just trusting people you don’t like, because that can also lead to disaster. But I get how this might be grating on some viewers.

Overall I think this is a fantastic fantasy film that has a unique design to it and excellent fight scenes. I watched this movie pretty much enjoying every scene. I can’t imagine anyone actually disliking this movie, but I think I’d get why some people might not have as much fun as I did. It’s a great addition to the Disney animated canon, and like I said, I’m a bit bummed that this movie didn’t pick up as much of a following as other entries did.

Do you trust him? Well, of course you do! And you knew he trusted you just as much!

What could it be that even Lucifer seemed really bothered about it? Well, you’d know eventually, so you prioritized dragging everyone’s ass to go with you instead. Lucifer said “any of my brothers whom you trust”, which is his vague way of telling you to bring everyone anyway. Sometimes you wish he would tone down on his cryptic remarks—your brain big dum dum.

“We’re going to Barbatos’ Estate,” was received with mixed reactions. Some were curious, some were outright annoyed (mostly Belphie who didn’t appreciate being woken up), and then there’s a really rare response from Levi who looked at you and said, “Wait, you’re going there too?” And when asked about his business there, grew incredibly tight-lipped.

“What’s going on?” Satan asked you on the way, and you leaned on his ear and said, “I don’t know either, but Lucifer said it’s something important.”

“Huh…”

“Any ideas?”

From the look on his face, it seemed like he has. But before he can share his thoughts to you, you have already arrived. Sometimes you forget that Barbatos was one of the highest-ranking demons in Devildom due to his subdued demeanor—a duke at that, which from your many readings of cheesy shoujo isekais is at least ML or even second ML material.

“Barbatos is pretty amazing!” You’ve never been to his estate before, so seeing it in all its glory was a feast to your eyes. Satan laughed at your side and told you that you’re gawking, but you couldn’t help it! It’s them who were weird! How can something so fancy be normal to them?

There were servants that greeted you as you arrived by the gates, and a man who introduced himself as the butler (a butler having his own butler! :0) guided you to “Lord Barbatos’ study”. He said fancier words that you couldn’t fully understand, and interpreted it as “follow me, peasant” which seemed to be its correct translation. Speaking of peasant…

“I’m pretty sure Mammon just stole a figurine nearby…”

Satan sighed and shook his head. “Leave him. You’ll see.”

You didn’t see anything, but you heard something alright. In fact, you haven’t heard anyone scream so ghoulishly in your life until Mammon. You smelled something burning too, but Beelzebub, who had been walking at the other side next to you covered your eyes.

“This happens every time we come here. He’ll be okay.” He said, warning you not to open your eyes, and you, being you who trusted them didn’t open your eyes until the butler announced that you have arrived.

“Please wait here, esteemed guests and I shall inform them of your arrival.” You were curtsied to. Curtsied to!

“I-is this how Lord Diavolo feels?! Everyday?!”  Your voice trembled with excitement, and you looked at every one of your companions (along with a grumbling Mammon lagging behind) with sparkling eyes.

“I can see your tail wagging from behind.” (Satan)

You punched him lightly on the shoulder and his smile only widened. Sure, Barbatos acted similarly to his own butler, but Barbatos is Barbatos. You haven’t had actual servants waiting on you before.

“Thank you for your patience, esteemed guests. Please come inside.”

You were promised tea and snacks as the butler left, opening the double doors to see shelves of books with gilded letters at every spine, a chandelier adorned with some fancy sparkly stuff overhead, and some other expensive looking items that Mammon was eyeing with the same, appreciative eyes as yours (although for an entirely different reason). Lucifer sat on one of the chairs nearby, reading stapled pieces of paper, while Barbatos sat behind his desk, spectacles resting on the bridge of his nose.

“I see, so you’ve brought my brothers.” Lucifer placed down the stack of papers on the table and gestured a hand over the vacant chair. “This will take a while, so why don’t you sit down?”

You noticed another figure from the window’s reflection; a mop of white hair scanning one of the bookshelves with a solemn face.

“Solomon, they’re already here. Do your research later.”

“…”

Lucifer sighed, then looked at all of you before standing up. “Barbatos, can you take over?”

Barbatos nodded and faced all of you, while Lucifer literally dragged Solomon by the collar, still concentrated on his reading.

Noticing curious eyes at the spectacle, Barbatos nodded in understanding and explained, “He has a tendency to space out when he’s concentrated on something; a walking hazard when left alone.”

Huh. You didn’t know that. So Solomon had a rather clumsy side to him.

“I apologise for summoning all of you in such short notice, but this matter is rather important.”

“So I was right,” Satan muttered, causing Barbatos to raise an inquiry.

“Were you informed prior?”

“No, merely an observation. Of course I didn’t know the specifics.”

“Ah, that actually makes an interesting introduction. Do you mind telling us what you know from what you have observed?”

Oh. ohhh…Barbatos shouldn’t have asked that. You love your boyfriend, sure. When he nerds out, it’s adorable to you but…

“I’m so glad you asked!” Okay, he is adorable. From his close-eyed smile to his air gestures imitating some noir detective procuring a pipe and placing it near his lips…

....but this doesn’t fit the seriousness you expected from the urgency of your summons.

“It’s simple really. Rather, it’s elementary,” You heard Levi mutter “chuuni” under his breath while holding back his laughter and you pinched his side to shut him up. A yelp of pain almost let out from him, if not for Lucifer helpfully glaring at him and encouraging him to say another peep. One brother making an embarrassment of him in front of his friend is already enough.

Satan really went all out with his explanations, taking notice of even the slightest of Lucifer’s misstep that any ordinary person would normally brush off. You heard about his suspicions of Solomon being involved, and the said sorcerer only smiled at you when you looked at him. ‘Guess Satan was right about that’ you thought, then turned to Levi who had now been your boyfriend’s new object of suspicion. The snake demon sputtered, conscious of being on the spotlight—even hiding behind you as if you were an effective shield.

“You’ve been making contact with Barbatos lately. Which was strange. You never make contact with anyone—“

“I have friends, just so you know!”

“Online friends and them do not count.” Pertaining to you.

You saw bullets of sweat gather from Levi’s face, desperately looking at the spectacled Barbatos for a lifeline, which the time bending demon happily obliged upon being requested. “It seems you’re going off topic, Satan. Is Leviathan’s personal matters of importance? Especially when it seems you have an idea of what’s going on now?”

Satan looked almost sheepish as he realised it himself, clearing his throat and returning to his seat. Now that your boyfriend had calmed down, Barbatos returned to explaining the situation. “Satan’s observations are frighteningly accurate. As he had already mentioned, we had been working from behind the scenes. It was not our intention to keep things from you, but we have decided it was the best course of action, until of course the situation was resolved—which was only recently.” Along with tea and snacks, some documents were left by the butler on the table; and you were thankful you cooled your tea first before sipping it. Reading those reports had NOT been a pleasant experience. Satan had to hold you and soothe your back to get you to calm down and reorganise your thoughts. Photographs and photographs of your family, your friends and the unspeakable things—

“What the hell is goin’ on?!”

Mammon was your voice of reason, your thoughts and feelings being conveyed by his bursts of anger.

“They’re just human! The hell does Lord Diavolo’s enemies got ta do with them?!”

“We feared this kind of reaction from all you, which was why we told you now that the situation is resolved.” Lucifer warned Mammon to keep his voice down, reminding him of your current disturbed state. Satan continued soothing you and reassuring you it was fine, but…you couldn’t feel anything. So, were you playing around and being blissfully ignorant while Lucifer and the others are sacrificing sleep and their precious free time to protect you?! But then again, what would knowing do when you were powerless? You struggled to keep your emotions in check, looking lost and confused as you met eyes with Lucifer who only looked back at you with an unreadable expression. You saw him open his mouth, as if he were saying something. Only when you felt tears streaming from your eyes did you begin to hear,

“…sorry.”, sounding almost rueful coming from the firstborn.

“No…I should be sorry…I caused trouble for everyone…”

Satan hugged you tightly and shushed your self-deprecating words. He kissed your tear-stained eyes without giving a damn about public displays of affection. He only wanted you to feel better.

“Barbatos’ underlings have already distributed the antidote to your family. And you…you’ve been taking small doses of them in your meals.” Solomon said, turning to Satan. “You must have found it strange that Lucifer had been taking kitchen duty quite frequently, didn’t you?”

“So that’s why…” (Satan)

“You should be grateful. I barely even cook for myself.”(Lucifer)

You can see it, everyone trying to hold back. Protecting you again in their own ways. It was in the way Belphie listened intently, fighting the urge to fall asleep. In Beel holding and keeping Mammon in place, the said avatar of greed angrier for your sake than yourself. In Asmo who sent you supportive glances while holding Satan’s hand on his other side, as he noticed your boyfriend on the verge of leaking out anger from his thin veneer of composure. Lucifer was unquestionably protective too, albeit misguided for deciding things for you. Barbatos as well—you felt that he cared for you. Whether that care was for you as an individual or as Lord Diavolo’s important guest did not matter. Solomon accepted your request to tutor Mammon despite his injury and busy schedule without a single complaint.

“Thank you, everyone.” You weakly smiled at them, still addled and confused, but you knew better now than to dwell on things that already happened. “Can I be honest?”

“Of course.” (Barbatos)

“…will I be okay from now on? My family too?”

You felt relieved to see Barbatos nod, no matter the remnants of doubt still hanging heavily on your heart. Unfortunately for you, Satan was keen to notice, his next words you didn’t expect.

“I’ll go back with them. To the human realm, of course."

How did he know? Did your fears show on your face? He held you closer towards him, your shoulders touching. “You can drop me out of RAD. I don’t care. Clearly this isn’t entirely over yet.”

His outrageous proposal was received by his other brothers favourably; everyone else offered to drop out as well, worried about your safety. Only Lucifer remained silent, not quite angry but instead, expectant. He levelled their apprehensiveness with his composure, voice clear and unfeeling. “I expected all of you to say that. Not to worry. I’ve already arranged your prolonged leave of absence…Satan. Everyone else can visit them if need be.”

There was opposition (mostly from Mammon aka your Guardian Demon), of course. But Lucifer reasoned that Satan made the most sensible choice.

“We have already made arrangements for your accommodations in the human realm; an alias as well—.” You laughed when you saw Satan’s brows knit at the name Helel in his false documents, knowing the name was of Lucifer’s choosing. Barbatos, Lucifer and Solomon took turns on briefing everyone about the situation, and from what pieces of conversation + information relayed to you, you began to understand:

Lord Diavolo’s reign was not received unanimously. The Demon King’s slumber caused a divide between noble factions, bourgeoisie and even the commoners. Your stay in Devildom was mostly peaceful due to the cooperation of numerous people, most especially Lucifer and his brothers, whose reputation in Devildom was enough of a silent declaration not to mess with you.

“However, some were foolish enough to target you anyway, no matter how well you are protected.” Solomon said.  “...mostly the fallen kingdoms salvaged by the Demon King before his slumber. They do not recognise his son to be their new master.”

“Wait—“ you recognised his phrasing and Solomon only smiled sadly. “You should not compare Devildom to Human Realm’s ethics. It’s not as cruel as you think it is.”

“I don’t want to hear that from someone with 72 demon pacts.”

You saw his lips tighten for a bit, followed by a forced laughter. “You’re right. I apologise."

“???” You said it jokingly, so why did it feel like you should be the one to apologise instead?

“This and that are different matters anyway,” Lucifer interrupted. “Just know that you are safe now, and Satan will accompany you for an indefinite amount of time until we are entirely sure no one is targeting you anymore.”

The meeting went by a blur after that. Lucifer said many more complicated things, and even had a message for each of his brothers, which he relayed on a faraway corner of the room. Whatever they talked about, it must have been serious, for even the most cheerful of the Demon Brothers had solemn expressions when they returned to their seat. And even as Barbatos thanked all of you for coming, signalling the end of your briefing, you can feel it---there was tension still lingering in the room even as you turned to leave.

“You’re not coming, Levi?”

“!!!”

Your best friend averted eye contact. “I-I’ll go home by myself.”

Oh right, he did say he had some business with Barbatos.

“You want Satan and I to wait for you?”

“N-no…” Levi stuttered. “I’ll be fine! Just go.”

Weeeeird but okay. Even Satan, who usually had all the answers seemed lost.

The uncertain danger you will face aside, your remaining days in Devildom had been relatively peaceful. Everyone was out of hot water once the final exam results were posted, boasting scores that were significantly higher than their usual—Mammon as well was safe from Lucifer’s punishments, and when you thanked Solomon for his help on tutoring Mammon, he only gave a curt reply, not bothering to make any more conversation. Typical him, you supposed. You weren’t really close.

Levi was still tight-lipped about his frequent visits to Barbatos; even with your numerous bribes and insistences, he didn’t entertain your curiosity. It almost felt like he was embarrassed.

“L-leave me aloooooone! Normies like you won’t understand anyway!”

He also sulked about not being the demon chosen to stay with you in the human realm and even questioned the importance of your friendship in your life—it almost escalated into another fight if not of your promises to summon him even without Lucifer’s permission. Satan only rolled his eyes once you told him about it.

“You’re going to get in trouble for this.”

2. last book you read – what did you think of it?

I finished the hate u give by angie thomas a couple of days ago and I absolutely loved it. it focuses on police brutality and racism also touches on various different topics like drug abuse, gangs, abuse, different views on interracial couples, etc. It was an incredibly powerful and impactful book. It was kind of hard for me to read bcuz generally, I read books to get away from the world we live in and this was very much the reality of the world we live in. the injustice of it. and angie writes it in a way that it is unapologetically honest. but it is so so important. I wrote a full review here on my book blog but it’s a spoiler-y so beware.

also I’m so excited to see amandla stenberg play starr. I’m gonna have to wait a few months to watch it (bcuz there are no frickin theatres here) but still... I know it’s gonna be great.

pfffffftttt method? what method? i tend to study at my desk to avoid falling asleep. and i listen to lofi hip hop or jazz. and i usually study in 3 hour intervals bcuz i have trouble focusing for longer periods of time and have to take breaks. is that what you meant?

I don’t necessarily have a favorite word... but when I learned my Spanish alphabet I would like to say the letter ‘y’ over and over again because it was fun to pronounce. It’s pronounced  ~ i griega ~ which is really fun to say. I just really love Spanish and rollng my ‘r’s.

I feel like my social skills have improved a shit ton. I used to not be able to speak to people without stuttering a lot or while holding eye contact for longer than 5 seconds. I used to not be able to order food for myself. And now I can interact with people better and I pick up on social cues better. And I smile at people I don’t know when I’m happy bcuz I feel like it and I like to spread positivity. things like this may seem small to other people but it’s not small for me. I think I’ve come a long way and I’m incredibly proud of myself for all of it.

i’m either mellow and chill or wild and weird. there is no in-between.

my mentality. in general really. but something i’ve been struggling with a lot recently is not being able to not do anything. i love having lazy days i do. they allow me to relax and take a break from things that have been stressing me out. but the next day when I get back into it and start to get things done... I put myself down about taking a day off. about wasting time when i could’ve gotten so much done. this mentality is such a toxic one and I hate that I have it. I hate that I always have to be productive to consider myself useful. I hate that I can’t relax and enjoy myself anymore without my brain going into overdrive to tell me how much of a fucking waste of oxygen I am. I was very near to tears a couple of days ago because I took a few hours off of schoolwork bcuz I had a migraine and the whole time my brain wouldn’t shut up you’re wasting time you could be done with so many assignments by now you could be doing useful things right now you don’t know how to do jack shit why the fuck are you even in school if you’re not going to study why is mom spending valuable money on your education when you can’t fucking stick to your fucking schedule fuck

oh! um ferris beuller? that john hughes movie with matthew broderick. i mean, i like the movie, i just don’t love it like everyone seems to. it’s a nice light movie about teenagers skipping school and having fun. but i don’t like ferris bcuz he comes off as a sort of douche. escpecially towards his friend cameron, who very clearly has mental health issues that ferris tends to brush off quite a lot. so i don’t really understand why people rave about it so much.

11. before consuming books/movies, do you read reviews, or do you like going in blind?

I, for the most part, go in blind. I have a tendency to put things on my list, to eventually watch/read, because I hear good things about them or I myself just would like to consume the content, but a never get to it immediately. I get to it months later, sometimes a year or two later, when I’ve more often than not forgotten all about anything I’ve heard about it. but even then, I don’t generally read reviews because I don’t really care what other people think of it. The only people’s opinions I care about are my friends and family because I like to discuss the content I consume with people close to me. Especially if I feel strongly about said content. so, no, i don’t seek out reviews. it’s usually that i happen upon reviews and them i’m like ‘good to know i guess?’ i don’t rely on critics cuz critics sometimes don’t know what Good Content is
