🌷👀👀
A week goes by before either of them speak of the night. Their week goes as follows: They bury the hardships and the reality that they’re falling apart at the seams, and instead they exchange forced playful conversations. If Percy’s being honest, he can’t remember the last time Annabeth said ‘I love you’.
But when Annabeth comes home from class one day, she drops her bag on the floor by the couch and somehow, also drops the act they’ve carried between each other.
“Two weeks, four days, thirteen hours.” The words make Percy’s fingers pause, the pencil in his hand lowering as he sets down the notebook onto the cushion beside him.
“What?”
“That’s the last time you kissed me.” She’s nervous, he realizes. She’s giving him a sad smile, her hands clasping and unclasping in her lap. Percy furrows his brows, “It hasn’t been that long, Annabeth.”
“It has, Percy.” She shakes her head, looking up. It was a habit she had: Looking up when she could feel tears coming on. In her brain, it would stop them– Or at least, that’s what she’d explained to Percy years ago. “Gods, why haven’t you kissed me?”
“You never want me to kiss you.” He responds, and Annabeth lets out a watery, low laugh and meets his eyes. The sight of the tears shining makes it feel like a weight’s been placed on his chest.
“That’s what you think?”
“That’s what I know, Annabeth.” He sighs, tossing the pencil onto the cushion beside him, “You– You’ve been distant, you know? And I tried at first to ask if you were okay, if you wanted to talk, but you always said no. You kept saying no, so I thought, ‘hey, let me give her her space’. And that’s what I did.”
She falls silent, and Percy gives her a quirk of his head, a barely there smile on his lips, “See? You know it too.”
“I– I didn’t mean to.” Percy shakes his head, “You did, though.”
A pause passes through them, but it’s stuffy and suffocating but Percy doesn’t know what to say. Annabeth takes in a sharp breath, “I fell in love with you when we were sixteen, but I– We– Have been through too much and I can’t take it anymore, Percy. I– I can’t breathe, I can’t live. It’s killing me.”
Her voice is so broken the weight on Percy’s chest only feels heavier, and she has tears falling from her eyes. “I don’t know how to do this anymore.”
“What are you saying, ‘Beth?” He feels stupid for asking, because he knows how this conversation is going to end, but he needs to hear the words fall from her lips.
“It’s over, Percy.” The words are like a punch in the gut, leaving her so casually that it only adds to the pain. The fact that it was said with no struggle only makes it worse– It tells him that she’s been thinking this for far longer than he thought. She wipes at her cheek, “It’s been over for a while, I think.”
He nods, his jaw clenched as he blinks tears away, “If that’s what you want.”
She shakes her head. The space between the two chairs between them is no more than two steps, but right now they feel like a massive chasm that Percy can’t seem to cross. “It’s what I have to do. I, um, I already spoke to my dad and he said I could stay with him for a bit, you know, till I find a place.”
Percy nods, half-listening to what she’s saying and half-turning his mind off. Annabeth not only rehearsed breaking up with him, but also had a back-up plan for what to do after their break up. That, he thinks, hurts more than the awkward interactions they’d been having for weeks.
He feels a kiss against his cheek, “Good bye, Percy.”
At that, he finally lets himself cry.
ahaaaa ... this was a one shot based off exile 👁👄👁
