#from a stage design perspective it's actually super interesting too#like the lighting colors of these shows are very very cohesive it's a lot of blue and purple tones with (iirc) some reds thrown in#basically they're doing ''bi lighting'' but extra heavy on the blue end#which... is probably why a lot of videos are Certified Pixels and stuff is hard to see. blue- especially deep/royal blue- lighting#makes it very hard for the human eye to focus. you ever have a digital clock or see a business sign at night with blue lettering??#the blue always looks really fuzzy yeah? so that's probably why we don't have the joe and patrick hug images from beach night#anyway the aqua scene (which actually is the correct technical term! both stage lighting and sound use ''scenes'' to split up a show#even though a concert is already divided by songs)#is super neat bc the basic lighting design that exists through the entire show ALSO functions exactly how that scene asks it to#which along with the whole aesthetic of the album art/tourdust makes me wonder the same thing you do:#was the aqua scene originally meant to be up longer/more prominent??#also while I'm here I may as well add that I LOVE the magical aesthetics of this tour. like it's in the name but also#the lighting and set designs really give the feel of like an old Barbie movie (like the fairytopia ones) or a whack 80s fantasy film#anyway. soz OP I didn't mean to sound condescending/pretentious I'm just super into event production and this got me Thinking#tourdust
No! don't worry! it wasn't condescending at all! Be fucking passionate about things!!! I don't have professional knowledge by any means but we as a collective need to talk more about the set design it is so fucking cool! i def left out all of the technical part bc what i was wondering was the "wait, this looks super complex for something that gets kinda overlooked in comparison to the rest of the scenes" part but you are so right it is fascinating from the design perspective, both the AQUA scene and the others. (and as someone who's often tried to condense bits of video into GIFs that fit the tumblr size limitation without making them straight up unviewable all these colour changes in lighting are a certified hell, but so so pretty).
I am still metaphorically chewing on glass from seeing the Attic scene at Wrigley (through the stream i couldnt make out the AQUA scene lmao so this is the first scene i could notice well) as a celebration of TTTYG and their early days, how the lights rig is lowered and the drums platform is brought forward so the feeling is a smaller stage, the light is heavy with blues fitting the tttyg colours and even the screens are given the aspect ratio to give them an older video look. Hell the way they move around stage mimicking how they would in a small venue in an early performance too, like with Pete getting up to the drums platform (kinda glad they couldn't figure out a way for that old man to climb up the rafters and hang upside down like he did all those years ago lol) AND THAT'S JUST THE SECOND SCENE!!! WE STILL DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE GIANT DOG HEAD!!! WE DIDN'T KNOW ABOUT THE TREEE!!! (which as patrick pointed out in the very first "post-riff with patrick" and it stuck to me bc of the wonder with which he said it, which tbh same, pete put these set pieces together and they're real and you can touch them, something about the physicality of this set is so-)
Which brings me to: YESSSS!!! the magical 80's dark fairytale vibes! and it does so in a way that dips its toes in the kinda childlike DYI (like with the background of the DOG scene being children drawings that on the larger scale look somewhere between pollock and graffiti too) that follows from the very first parts of the era with the LFTOS music video (and hey! more nautical themes, because Pete Wentz loves his nautical themes) and also the claymation used at the very very beginning when announcing the album.
And not only in the visual department of the tour, there's also things like the lava boots speech which strikes me as fitting particularly well with that, like you could see these 4 kids and their dog playing the floor is lava in their living room making props out of cardboard, imagining they're going on this epic quest where they have magical powers and their dog is clifford sized and Pete goes "nuh huh, I can walk in the lava because I have the lava boots on! We can all get the lava boots on!"
so uh, yea, do not feel bad at all i have a lot of incoherent rambling about the aesthetic choices of this tour and i welcome people adding their perspectives and interests about it
I still can't get over the AQUA scene, it's pretty elaborate, it's up there for 2 songs, it's usually barely visible (though i AM saying this bc we just had a clear view of their seashell submarine) like I'm wondering if it wasn't originally meant to be a longer part or here's where the bubbles were supposed to come in but then they kept adding things and swapping things around and it ended up being the hub for uma and 16 c. Or was the original plan to have it up for 2 songs at the beginning with little lighting because fuck it we can and we ball and we will
