Raw Recap 2/25/19

Something great had to happen in 2019 eventually right? Eventually if you throw enough shit at the wall, something will stick. Let’s find out what the stickiest is with a little of The Good, The Bad, and the WTF: F**k Cancer Edition.

The Good: Roman Reigns, despite my deep disdain for his character and repetitive in ring work, is in remission and that’s amazing news. Merely four months after announcing his Leukemia had returned, he is back in a WWE ring and that should inspire anyone who fights this terrible disease. I still think Superman Punches are the stupidest wrestling move ever (yes worse than the Cobra) and I truly hope he doesn’t somehow get inserted into the main event at WM, but I’m genuinely happy to hear a guy so young isn’t going to succumb to this disease. The crowd was into it, the Internet is into it, and I’m ok with it. For tonight.

Drax destroys the elderly. I’ll admit it. They got me. I love it when I’m shocked by this company. I literally was talking to Ginny Smith right before this segment about how I found it odd that HHH didn’t appear to have a feud for WM. Problem solved. I also was wondering how confident WWE Creative was that Flair or Michaels (who appeared wasted to me) wouldn’t say something utterly insane on live TV. Heel Batista is the best Batista and a one off with two part timers is perfectly fine. They have to fill this 7 hour show somehow. Now if they really want to impress me, just have this be Dave’s gimmick. Just have him destroy all the old farts for the next 5 weeks. Taker, Angle, Vince, Shane, Cena. Do you take a bone strengthening supplement to ward off osteoporosis? Come on in for your Batista Bomb!

Ronda lays down the title in protest of Lynch’s suspension. This whole segment was a little long winded and awkward right up until the moment she laid the title at Stephanie McMahon’s feet. That I liked. Some people are saying this was Ronda’s best promo. I respectfully disagree. The emo Ronda is the worst Ronda. She’s at her best when she’s angry and spouting off about what a bad bitch she is. Ice n Advil, bitch. For as long as this thing has been dragged out, it’s tough to keep it fresh. Tonight Ronda relinquishing the strap make it feel fresh. *Hat tip*

Heavy Machinery and the Ascension backstage. This was short and funny. Heavy Machinery never has to win the tag titles. This act is just fun. CHEESE! Never change, Otis.

Lio Rush challenges Balor for IC belt on by far the least offensive Moment of Bliss to date. Solid match, really the only one of the night.

Bayley continues to quietly be hot in 1 on 1 competition. Nia losing clean doesn’t help her monster heel image but I’d really like to see something big for Hug Life in 2019.

The Bad: Hairy Ryback destroys Bigger Blacker Luger and Lio Rush in a nothing match. This accomplished absolutely nothing. No one cares. But it doesn’t go in the WTF column because it wasnt a Tin Steps of Doom match with Corbin.

The Stone Cold Straight Fire parallel continues ad nauseam. It wasn’t god awful or anything but the arrest angle was crazy predictable. They’re just copy pasting the Vince/Austin stuff from 98-99. A little spin or originality wouldn’t kill them. That’s all I’m saying.

Alexa Bliss being reduced to a flirty talk show host. Waste of her talent but the low key consistent jokes  from the female wrestlers about Finn’s abs are funny.

Elias. What exactly is the plan here? Lacey Evans has more direction. And she was also in this segment. His reactions to the interruptions are funny but he’s slowly getting his heat back and would make a perfectly good feud for Balor. What he doesn’t need is to join the Axis of Who Cares. He is perfectly capable of getting over on his own.

The WTF: The Revival continues to job to NXT call ups. They haven’t won on TV since winning the titles. I understand the compulsion to put the new guys over but the fans feel the same about them if they destroy the B team or Enchilada Party. Making the titles feel irrelevant is the exact opposite effect that putting them on the Revival should be having.

McIntyre continues to inch closer to complete 3MB irrelevance. It’s amazing how they have completely killed all his momentum in such a short time. It would be impressive if it wasn’t so depressing.

Speaking of 3MB, Jinder Mahal jobbed to Kurt Angle for no earthly reason at all. This could have easily been replaced with a commercial for Temptation Island or the 8th commercial for Rich White People Named Christly Do Stuff.

This show reeked of desperation for a ratings boost but it worked. The Reigns story has fans reinvigorated about him for now, they got us with a pretty good swerve with Batista, and the Lynch/Rousey thing continues to roll right along. I think Lio could be really promising after he breaks off from Lashley and I’m hoping they can build the rest of this women’s division after Ronda walks into the sunset after losing the title. Could have used some more ring action, but baby steps. 4 Hogan Belt Whips. The good stuff was great and the trash was minimal by comparison.
