i made a ref of my headcanon kris like a week ago and finally had the focus and confidence to post them rdfcgvhbj. the art is pretty messy because i was having a high pain day when i drew it and didn't have the spoons to put on the polish i usually would, but i still like it.
they are an ambulatory wheelchair user and in the dark world, their chair becomes a steed with horse legs and tail. they have total control over where the chair goes, though it flicks its tail on its own sometimes. the chair itself has a more bulky shape to resemble a throne but is actually soft and supportive like an arm chair. the delta rune is embroidered on the seat back.

Hi! I just wanted to say thank you for writing the 'How to Write a Blind or Visually Impared Person'. I myself am not Blind or Visually Impared and i am in the process of writing the basis for such a character and your guide really helps. (And will help as well as be shared to those I know whom also need to see this.) I do have one question though: What about writing people blind from birth?
So, with writing characters who are blind from birth, it’s important to remember that there are both real people who have been completely blind from birth and people who have been legally blind or VI from birth. So, with blindness from birth, it doesn’t necessarily have to be no sight at all. It’s also important to note how small a minority that is in the blind community.
Statistics
2.4% of Americans are living with visual disabilities. (Total (all ages): 7,675,600)
0.8% of school age Americans (ages 4-20) are living with a visual disability. ( Total: 706,400). This accounts for 9.2% of the entire blind community in the country.
90% of the entire blind community world wide has some remaining vision. People who are completely blind are a small minority.
Source: National Federation of the Blind
Molly Burke and her boyfriend Adrian (this post was written in 10/20/2020) are both people who have been legally blind from birth or a very young age (I can’t remember exactly when Adrian said he went blind, but it’s been his entire memorable life, though he still has remaining vision).
Most children are not diagnosed right away at birth. It heavily depends on the eye condition in question. Unless you had an easily observable symptom, such as nystagmus or pupils which don’t react to light or lazy eye, doctors and parents are unlikely to notice right away.
Most blind children don’t realize they’re blind until they’re a bit older and have developed enough communication skills to recognize that the visual experiences their family describes don’t match their visual experiences. Slowly small moments and situations begin to pop up where you realize there’s something everyone else seems able to do easily that you’re struggling with.
Particularly severe vision issues will be noticed by parents sooner than more subtle ones. The more usable sight a child has and the fewer visually observable symptoms they have, the longer they’re going to fly under the radar until the adults in their life realize something is different. Even then, it might not be until the child is able to communicate an inability to see what they’re describing that parents might realize something is wrong.
More severe vision issues will be picked up sooner. Parents realizing their children doesn’t respond to peek-a-boo or their eyes don’t follow moving items but sound will get their attention.
At this point in life, the economic situation of the child’s family will have a huge impact on how they grow up.
Families living below the poverty line or living in countries (America) where health care is expensive and treated as a privilege rather than a necessity and human right, or simply isn’t available at all, will have a much harder time getting their child diagnosed or treated.
Those families likely won’t have the education or knowledge needed to realize what is wrong and how they can help their child. Like health care, knowledge/education is treated like a privilege instead of a necessity and human right.
The education their children have access to will likely be lacking as well. Poorer communities have less funding for their students than wealthy communities. Those schools will have an even more restricted budget for accessible education, meaning they might not be able to pay the wages of a teacher’s aide to work one-on-one with that child in class, or have access to magnifiers and braille books/typewriters/education. Even though by legal law they must provide accommodations for disabled students, it doesn’t mean they will, and a financially disadvantaged family won’t have the resources to fight the school for their child’s rights (or even be aware of their child’s rights in the first place).
Children from middle class or wealthy families will (like all children in their community) have a huge advantage over their peers who attend schools with fewer resources. However, those blind children still have a disadvantage with their own peers.
Again, a school might refuse accommodations because administration can be jerks like that. It happens all the time. Parents may have to fight for their child’s rights to equal education through an aide, accessible school materials, and blind-friendly education.
Molly Burke made a video recently talking about her experiences with education as a blind child.
Learning Braille is a huge step in helping blind children, but it’s becoming less popular as audiobooks become more available. Audiobooks are amazing, and that method of reading is just as valid as any other, however a child reading solely with audiobooks will lose the literacy benefits. Like any writing system, Braille teaches spelling and grammatical rules necessary for educational and professional writing. While Braille is a writing system unique to itself, it still lives within the confines of whatever the native speaking language of the child is. Braille in English still uses the same spelling and grammatical function English uses. Braille in Spanish still bends to the rules of Spanish.
This is very different from different sign languages which can have grammar and syntax rules that completely differ from the native language of that country. Which is why you have languages called American Sign Language and British Sign Language and Canadian Sign Language that are using in English speaking countries but function very differently from both English and their fellow Sign counterparts. I’ve heard it said that ASL is more similar to the grammar structure of Chinese than it is to English, which gives the Deaf community a literacy disadvantage of their own when their native language and their reading/writing language are completely different languages.
Though there is a secondary system of Braille which uses shortened abbreviations. That is Grade 2 Braille, and it is learned after Grade 1.
This is Molly Burke’s video on Braille, which includes the history of Braille, how she personally learned it in school, and showing what a Braille Typewriter is and how it is used.
I highly recommend it because Braille is something I only know from research and theory, not from personal experience.
Children who don’t learn Braille are statistically less likely to receive higher education and more likely to live below the poverty line.
Though blind adults are at a huge disadvantage in the work force with 80% of blind adults being unemployed but not by choice. Even though they have the same qualifications as other applicants, employers will almost always choose a sighted applicant over them, even if the sighted applicant is less qualified.
As adults, people who were born blind are just as affected by their upbringing, education, and family life as sighted adults are. The first eighteen years of their life shaped who they are as a person, so like any other character, you must consider what your character’s childhood must have been like for them to become the person they are now.
Once they reach adulthood, there isn’t much difference between people who were born blind or became blind early in life, compared to people who went blind as adults. But there are a few:
- Adults who were blind or became blind during their education are more likely to learn Braille than adults who went blind later in life.
-They are more likely to have O&M training. Though, only 10% of the blind community has a cane or guide dog, while the rest rely on remaining vision and sighted guides.
-O&M abilities (beyond mobility guides, there’s also learning how to use your remaining vision, your hearing and touch, and other senses to navigate without a cane/guide dog) are generally much better the longer you’ve been blind.
-Adults who have been living with blindness all their lives are more likely to be comfortable with their disability than newly blind adults, but that is not necessarily a rule. There is more confidence in living x-many years blind and knowing how to live your regular life without new major adjustments.
-The fewer memories a person has of vision, the fewer visual things they are likely to miss. You can’t miss something you’ve never experienced or don’t remember. Doesn’t mean someone won’t wish they knew what stars and fireworks and the ocean looks like, but it won’t be as big a focus as it is for someone who went blind recently.
-People dream with whatever experiences they are living with now, meaning blind people dream with whatever their current vision is. Someone who has never seen or no longer retains any memories of sight will not have dreams with visuals.
(Note, memories of sight are something that fades with time, no matter when you went blind in life. After about 7 years of not seeing a particular image, you’re likely to have forgotten what that thing actually looked like, including color and other general vision things)
That is what I have for you. I’m going to link this to my masterpost so that it’s easily accessible for everyone and if you want to come back to it, you will be able to easily find it.

Staying on parents health insurance in NJ?
"Staying on parents health insurance in NJ?
As the title states, I am wondering if I am eligible to stay on my parent's health insurance (we live in New Jersey and my dad gets the family insurance through his job in Delaware). I am 23 years old, not in school, and my job offers health insurance. I have read that the law allows children under the age of 27 to remain on their parent's health insurance UNLESS the kid's job offers health insurance. As I stated, mine does offer it. HOWEVER, an older coworker of mine told me that her children were able to stay on the family health insurance until age 27 even though the kids' work offered insurance because the cost of the insurance at the child's job was over $25 per week. The cheapest policy at my job will cost me just over $30 per week. Unfortunately, I have not found any trace of this $25 rule anywhere online. Is this a true policy? If insurance isn't offered cheaply enough, can I stay on my parent's policy? Can anyone shed some light on this?

Cheap Car Insurance for an 19 Year Old?
I am 19 years old and have found a good deal on an '09 Challenger , obviously this being a sports car and me being a 19 year old male my insurance rates would shoot through the roof to astronomical proportions. So my question is, what car insurance should I get if I decide to go through on this deal? I have already looked at Esurance and Progressive and have found nothing below $500, I am hopefully wanting to pay around $200-$300 if that is even possible. Please answer with suggestions about good companies or maybe even experiences where you were able to get really cheap insurance, please anything is helpful this is my dream car and I have the opportunity to seize it.""
How much will my insurance go up?
I rearended someone on the highway. There was no damage on either car and no one was hurt. Unfortunately, my front airbags deployed and the seatbelts locked up. I've got an estimate of 4k in repairs. I believe my deductible is approx $400. 4k is a pretty hefty amount. But the question is should I claim or pay out of pocket? Basically, will the increased insurance rate exceed that of the 3.6k difference that they'd be paying? I'm currently paying 1k a year. Thanks.""

Question about different garaging address on insurance policy?
I had had my license for 6 years in October, and called my insurance company to make sure my rate would go down. While on the phone, the rep and I got to chatting and I mentioned to her that I have been staying most nights (6-7 nights per week) at a different address for over a year now, but my license and policy are still listed at my mother's address. The rep explained the garaging address can be changed without changing the billing address if the two are different. Today I received an email about being refunded the difference at the end of my policy term. I didn't realize the changes would generate such a huge difference in price (The zip code of the town I have been staying in has a low crime rate and my mother's address is in a city). I realize people change their address to commit fraud, and now seeing such a difference in rate, I want to sure there is no legal ambiguity- I want to be crystal clear on what garaging implies and what I need to be aware of. 1) Am I in a gray area...If I go home for a weekend? If I lend the car to my brother for a few days? Do I need to be at the garaged address 80% of the time? 100%? I almost want to call them and ask to change it back just so as not have to worry. 2) Also, what would generate the bigger rate difference- the garaging change or the fact that I have had my license for 6 years? (is there a way to tell? Can I request a revised policy? 3) I am planning to replace my car soon, possibly donating it by the end of the year (very old car with continuous engine problems), so I will need to cancel my policy before it is up in April. Will this complicate things further? Any advice or resources are greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance and thank you for reading!""

What would the insurance be for a 16 year old with a ford expedition.?
Hi, I'm 16 years old and I currently have a 2002 Gmc Envoy, and I love the qualities of the car, but the brakes are horrible and it's crash test rating is really low. I've had people pull out in front of me on more than 2 occasions and my brakes take so long for the car to stop so im really nervous when driving it. I want to trade it in and get a 2000-2005 ford expedition because its on the same platform as my dads f-150 and when I drive his truck the brakes are so much better and I have better visibilty, the expedition is also better in crashes. I know the gas is more but it only gets 2 miles less than my envoy and I only use if to drive to school and footballs games. If i were to switch cars how much would my monthly incurance be? Im 16 and im a honor student so I do get a discount with farmers insurance. Also i believe right now my envoy is pricey because its the high class edition with the heated seats and stuff so all of that makes the rate higher. I dont need all of that with the expedition though.""

Is there anything I can do to make them pay for at least 75% of it?( besides eyewitnesses cuz there were none )
Staying on parents health insurance in NJ?
Is health insurance worth getting if you are 23?
I just started working my first real adult job and have become eligible for a health insurance package. If I decided to get the benefits, about $88 dollars will be taken from my paycheck--that will be $176 a month ($2,112 over a year) that I will be loosing. That's a lot! I'm 23 (female) and I never get sick and I haven't had the need to go to the the doctor for anything serious in over 4 years. It may seem like a stupid question since Health Coverage right now is a current hot topic that many people are fighting about, but....SHOULD I GET MY BENEFITS? I just don't see the point of having all that money taken out of my paycheck and then STILL having to pay a co-pay. I might go see a Obgyn but that costs less than $250 out off pocket which is still less than $2112. I also just left college so I'm current on all my physicals, and I don't need any eye prescriptions. So is it worth the gamble?""

Is this covered under home owner's insurance?
We have been doing A LOT of work on our house (getting it ready to sell), and we've paid for basically everything (even things that would've clearly been covered by insurance). However, this problem is one I'd rather not pay for if it can be avoided. There was apparently a leak under our shower and it caused some fairly serious rot under the floor. We were unaware of the leak. The carpenter who came says that there will be some fairly extensive work necessary on the shower itself, not just the rotted wood (which will be easy and fairly inexpensive to replace). Will my home owner's insurance policy cover that?""

""Families who live in America, how much is your health insurance per month?""
In an earlier question I mentioned that my boyfriend's parents are paying for his 24-year-old sister's health insurance after she got laid off and couldn't find another position and can't afford health care on her own, to the tune of $175 a month (and she's perfectly healthy) and was floored when someone said that was actually inexpensive. Btw, her parents insist on her having health care coverage for fear of her getting in an accident or whatever. I'm 17 and am quite obviously naive about the costs of health insurance, but I'm really curious about it, and would like to know how much it usually costs for a family to have health insurance in America. I'm in California. I don't know if it's more expensive depending on your state. If if you don't mind answering, how much do you pay per year, and how many people are in your family? Does it become more expensive as your kids get older? What kind of plan do you have? Through work or your own? Are you supportive of universal health coverage? Also: does anyone understand how Medicare / MediCal works and who decides who is covered and who isn't? Is it based on your yearly income? I'm asking because one of the reasons my boyfriend's parents want his sister to have insurance is that another family friend of ours broke her jaw in a roller blading accident when she was 26 and didn't have insurance because she was unemployed at the time, and not being able to pay the $15,000 hospital bill killed her credit score. Sorry for all the questions. I'm just really curious about all this.""

Writing a Blind or Visually Impaired Character: Crafting
How to Craft a Blind or Visually Impaired Character, Part One of a series
The is part of a multi-step guide for writing blind characters, and it’s master post is this link: https://mimzy-writing-online.tumblr.com/post/185122795699/writing-a-blind-or-visually-impaired-character
All the posts associated with this guide will be tagged #blindcharacter along with any other posts I write in the future regarding writing blind characters.
Disclaimer: This blogger/writer is visually impaired, has lived with vision loss for almost two years, has been using a cane for two years, and has written two blind characters so far.
Part One: Crafting the Blind Character
Step One: Make a character. A real, fully fleshed out, written and perfected character.
I am VERY serious here. You need the character first before you can decide to make them blind. Or disabled in general. The reason for that is because disabled people are real people. They were real people before they developed their disability and they continue to be real people living with their disability.
Real people have family and friends they love and adore. They have their own community. They have an innate desire for human connection, whether it’s romantic, familial or friendship connections. They have sexual orientations and gender identities.
Real people have a sense of humor, whether it’s sarcastic, dry, witty, full of puns, dark humor or lighthearted humor. Even if their humor is reliant on memes, everyone has a sense of humor. Unless you’re writing a character who has a distinct lack of humor and never laughs at anything ever, but then I generally advise against writing a character who never laughs once in your book, sighted or not.
Real people have interests, favorite and least favorite things, music and food tastes, books they love and hate, unique mannerisms, goals, things they’re afraid of and things they’re willing to fight.
To be honest, blindness doesn’t change a person that much. There’s not much of a difference between sighted me and visually impaired me. Visually impaired me learned some better social skills and has an affinity for soft things and interesting textures, but I’m still the same person.
Think about it like this: take your favorite OC that you’ve ever made, and make them blind. Ideally they’re still an interesting person without being blind, so blindness is just sort of a thing that happened to them.
(this is actually how I made one of my blind characters. I took my favorite original character ever, and I made him blind. He’s still the same person, but his lifestyle and how people perceive his ability and treat him, are different.)
Blind people have amazing, colorful lives that are just as interesting as a sighted person’s life.
Your character needs to be developed and fleshed out before you give them a disability because at the end of the day disabled people are still real people and disabled characters should reflect that.
If you want to see a good example of what I mean when I say blind people are real people, I would check out YouTuber Molly Burke. Link to her channel right here:
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCwf9TcLyS5KDoLRLjke41Hg
She’s gotten pretty popular and through her videos you can really see her personality fleshed out. She’s a very authentic person, living her full life on camera. She does videos on her experiences with blindness. There are lots of educational videos on her channel, including how she (as someone who is considered medically blind and has only light and shadow perception remaining) uses technology as a blind person, what it’s like having a guide dog, videos about what it was like growing up with continuous vision loss, how she shops and picks out her daily outfits and does her make up. Like many people, Molly has an interest in fashion and beauty, and blindness has never stopped her. (Hint: your blind characters can have an interest in fashion and makeup too! Wouldn’t that be cool?)
She’s amazing and she is exactly what I mean when I say blind people are real people with vividly interesting lives just like sighted people.
Step Two: Make them blind
This is actually a multi-step thing, so we’ll work one step at a time.
First, decide how they went blind. Was it a disease or an accident? If it was a disease, you need to determine what disease it was. The disease you choose will affect your character’s vision in a specific way. Macular degeneration and retinitis pigmentosa will create two very different changes to vision. Get very specific and then research the shit out of that disease.
If it was an accident, you need to get very specific about the details of that accident and research whether what you’re suggesting is actually possible.
A head trauma might create a tear in the retina which would certainly affect vision, but retina tears are actually fixable through surgery in most cases (though probably not all cases, but most)
A chemical burn would damage the layers of the eye enough to cause blindness, but you need to be specific on what chemical it was, way type of burn it might cause, and how badly it would affect the skin surrounding the eyes.
In general, I advise against going the accident/trauma route for blinding a character. Going the trauma/accident route is very easy to mess up and can quickly turn into a daytime soap opera type of drama. It easily becomes a tragedy and tragedy is not fun to read. If that’s not the story you want to tell, then I recommend an eye disease.
Second, using what you’ve researched, you need to decide exactly what your character sees. Be very specific. Keep in mind that 90% of blind people have at least some remaining vision, even if it’s very little.
It might be shadow and light perception, so they see more outside in the sun than they do at night. (and probably see nothing at night in this case) They can still be light sensitive if they have light perception. Let me go back to Molly Burke, who only has light and shadow perception left, but is light sensitive. They might see shadows moving in front of a light source, but see almost nothing at night. They may only see the light source (like a lamp or headlights) and see darkness everywhere else.
Your character might have color vision still, or some vision acuity that allows them to distinguish some shapes from others but still prevents them from seeing details.
Your character might have terrible depth perception, and this makes stairs and curbs impossible to perceive and they might knock something over because they perceived it as being farther away than it was, or feel frustrated when they reach for something they thought was a few feet in front of them and is actually closer to ten feet away.
Maybe they have tunnel vision (if you’re writing with retinitis pigmentosa in mind, follow this guide) What they see is more like a window. It’s oddly shaped, not perfectly circular. There are probably dark spots in that window where they still don’t see. One eye might see more than the other. Large objects will be easier to see from a distance than if they were close up, and if they’re close up they might have to rove their eyes around the surface of what they’re looking at to see all the details to make a bigger picture. People with retina disorders tend to also lose color vision over time.
They might have vision acuity loss and they’ve lost distance vision. This is when the definitions of legally blind and visually impaired became a bit more important, because there is a distinction between the two.
Your blind character’s vision should not be completely fixed by glasses. That’s not blind. Having terrible distance vision that corrects to normal people vision with glasses is not blind. It’s not the same.
Some blind people still wear glasses, don’t get me wrong, but only if glasses create any real improvement. And even then, they’ll always see worse than others with glasses. It’s just an improvement.
(I’ve always needed glasses to correct some vision, but until I was 22, glasses always corrected my vision to 20/20. Now they correct to about 20/70 or worse. Even with glasses I still see like shit)
So sit down for a while and figure out what your character really sees. Put yourself in every scene or location your character will be in and determine what they can see in the moment. I don’t care if you’re narrating from third person, or from a different character’s first person perspective, or if this character is only a background character, you need to know what they can see in that moment.
Using this, you need to know what your character knows, especially if your blind character is important to the plot. They can’t see the small print on that sign, the dried bit of blood on someone’s shoes, a shadow sinking into an alley way, or even if that blurry blob twenty feet away is a trashcan or a person. (True story, always happens to me, and I am always wrong the first time)
If your character is meant to be uncovering these clues, you need to find a reasonable way for them to figure it out. Is there a sighted companion who points visual clues out and your blind character? Do they have magnifiers to read small print? Are they good at sneaking around and overhearing people from a distance? Are they just great at knowing when someone’s lying by the tone of their voice? Are they working with a team?
(Side Note: please don’t write your blind characters as some superhuman with amazing super senses that know where everyone and everything is. Please don’t write Toph or Daredevil. I love those characters, but those characters already exist and you need to make someone new. You’re not writing Toph or Daredevil.)
That’s it on crafting the character. To sum up, what you need is a character who is already interesting and amazing on their own without a disability, and then you need to give them a disability you spent hours and hours researching and figuring out.
