Hi, I'm sorry to write to you out of the blue, but Of Elves and Humans was the first DA longfic that got me hooked back in 2011 when I, as a dumb teen, happened to pick up DAO. Ever since then, the DA universe has been a constant fixation of mine and my admiration for you as a writer as well as someone who isnât afraid to call out the franchise's flaws has never wavered. Now that Bioware decided to take a massive shit on everything pre-DAV and their oldest fans specifically, I'm really devastated and feel like a fool for having been so invested in DA and its lore for those past 13 years. Itâs incredibly encouraging, however, to see you keep on keeping on. "So since they spat in my face like this I ignore this atrocity of a game even exists" is where I hope to be at soon, too. Thank you.
(First of all apologies for the late reply, I put it in my drafts when i was too tired to complete it, and then my adhd brain forgot it existed due to being distracted by new shinies đâ )
But aww omg i cannot believe i was the gateway drug into dragon age, or rather the old version of my story on FFN was. I am so very honored <3 And nonnie, I feel you. I am invested in DA as a series since DA:O's release in 2009, like I bought it on a whim for XBox because I liked Mass Effect 1 sm. So that is 15 yrs of my life i spent loving and discussing a thing while still being critical of the thing, but now i feel so very protective of the world, lore and its characters that "New Bioware" has decided to take a massive dump of shit on, and not only the games but the old fans I feel are treated with disdain too and do not matter to them any longer.
Long, subjective rant about current bioware aka the shambling corpse of its former self and talent incoming. Spoilers for Veilguard bc i don't give a fuck to avoid them :D You (general you, not you in particular dearest nonny <3) should use your time better than to play this shit anyhow đ
It feels like calculated malice of new Bioware to apply the scorched earth tactics to offscreen destroy everything that old fans and fans of the other games in general held dear, and was supposed to suck out the enjoyment of DAO, DA2 and DAI. Like it is obvious they plan to create a sequel on DA's scorched bones, but jfc, you can do so story-wise without spitting everyone loving what old bioware has built in the face after dropkicking them. But to me that is part of the problem, since if i remember correctly and i wish i could find the bit... they praised Veilguard as "The best Dragon Age game ever", with the most interesting companions and best most improved combat system, comparing it to the other three games in a near smug fashion. There is marketing and there is putting the other games down to prop up your most favorite and only child mattering and they were definitely doing the latter. And don't get me started on the whole "Who is Zevran" debacle or we are gonna here all day.
Bottom line is new/current devs and writer do not give a shit about and very possibly have never played any other game than Inquisition, and you cannot tell me otherwise. And since a lot of devs/writer have left since the start of this project that would become this abysmal game, I also have the impression that there is a lot of underlying resentment toward what these former colleagues have created and so they piss on it in order to make it fully theirs now. Like dogs marking their territory, and well that did not work out, imo. At all.
Ever since they announced respecting our past choices by ignoring them (????) it was clear to me that I would not play Veilguard but just watch a playthrough and all spoilers and then move on. And everything i saw before release was shocking... like i was flabbergasted at how baaaad the dialogue was, which as a writer myself is super important to me in my story. There was no subtext, characters just blurt out everything they think and feel, like a lifeless doll you squeeze and words tumbling out and just as natural. It is stilted, awkward and 80% of it exists for info dump or info dumb rather as they keep repeating the same shit they just told you a few seconds ago as if you as the player are braindead. Here is a good example of what i mean.
Jfc, who edited this crap? There is so much superfluous dialogue that adds nothing to a scene but annoyance for the player and says nothing at all. Just pure senseless yapping in the most cringy way. Why was no one there to trim this nonsense as you should as a writer/editor? Hell, they really disregarded every simple and basic writing rule (everything is told never SHOWN for example especially in dialogue) which really made me question their competence in what they were doing and thus the quality of the upcoming game but i still held out hope for it to not be that bad.
Well shit, it was even worse. In all regards. Especially the writing that cringed this writer into a new dimension with its incoherent incompetence. Jfc. they got paid for that? I'm convinced the majority of fandom writer can do much better, even unpaid. Hell my cat just by walking over the keyboard can manage a better draft and script...đ
But I digress. That is a rant for another time. Point is, nonny, despite my defiant words, I struggled too for days after i got to know the full extent of Bioware's spiteful fuckery to even look at anything da related, in my case my Alistair/Mahariel longfic. I was really down for a few days, ngl. Then again, there is nothing better than spite fueling my creativity to prove "i can write better" soooo in the end and with the help of the much better first version of DA4 in the artbook, I was able to exorcise the demons and feverdream-mindfuck of mediocrity sold to me as a turd with gold-glitter that is this game.
I have successfully now rejected its existence, filled the void with the version that should have been from the artbook and vowed to give no fucks what bioware is doing or saying and infinitely more fucks when writing my own version of thedas and the version of DA4 that should be. REWRITES BBY hell yeah. So OEAH:R is just the beginning of a verse-wise rewrite. But if you need a pick me up, nonny, you are very much welcome to take a trip down memory lane to Dragon 9:30 and see how much this iteration of the story differs from my first one back in the days. Because in this house of mine, we grow and learn as writers, unlike bioware where writer ego reigns surpreme (oh boy and does it ever show in VG) aka eating their own turds and tell themselves it is the finest chocolate đ
There is still a lot of good about DA out there, but we have to accept it does not come from Bioware any longer. Instead it came, comes and will come from the fans and creators of art and texts and words defying their bullshit with their love and respect for the world, its lore and characters. Also very unlike Bioware.
As we should <3

vagabond
my batfam obsession has finally come in handy (reader is like, late teens, early twenties??)
This was meant to be a drabble, but I went a teeny tiny bit overboard, and by overboard, I mean this is 5.6k words - there will also definitely be a part two <33
Enjoy :)) Or don't. I can't tell you what to do

âOkay,
Letâs do this one last time
My name?? You donât need to know my name. All you need to know is that I was bitten by a radioactive spider, and for the last six years, Iâve been the one, and only, Recluse.
âŠ.what? Spiderman?
No, no, none of that nonsense. Thatâs so overused. Plus, Iâm a woman, and Spiderwoman just feels like a bit of a mouthful.Â
Yeah⊠Recluse. I was bitten by a recluse spider.Â
âŠironically, I hate spiders.â
****
Hear me out.
Youâre a Spider person(??), involved in the Spider verse. You have the usual Spiderman backstory (sort of), and youâve got the same incredible senses and abilities. I imagine you having a slightly superior spider sense and speed compared to other Spiders â think Cindy Moon. And obviously, the name, Recluse, means you were bitten by a recluse spider (I fucking hate spiders), but that also means that you get all the qualities of a recluse spider. Mainly necrotic venom and the ability to camouflage. You canât exactly turn invisible, you just have the uncanny ability of blending in like a chameleon. Itâs kind of creepy, I wonât lie.
Regardless of your abilities, you were there when Miguel lost his temper and when Miles ran away.Â
Except you made the mistake of trying to help Miles. Why wouldnât you? He was just a child, and he only wanted to keep his family safe. Anyone else wouldâve done the same in his position. Suffice it to say, that pissed Miguel off. Majorly.
And while Miles managed to get away without a dimension-travelling watch, you weren't as fortunate. You fought tooth and nail with other Spiders, not wanting to hurt them and not wanting to get caught. You barely managed to escape with your life as you tapped a random location into your watch and zapped off to another earth without a second thought or a proper plan. But not before the Spiders giving chase had managed to damage your watch (and you - theyâre strong as fuck, of course they managed to do some damage).
Now, as you stand on an empty rooftop, examining your watch in the rain, you're beginning to think you may have fucked up.Â
Slightly.
The watch still prevents you from glitching, you've confirmed that much. Thank goodness.
But it is broken. You know it is. Because you can't reach anyone else in the Spider verse. And you can't see what universe you're in. You feel like youâve been thrown in the deep end, and the fact that you can barely stand doesnât help.
****
Stood in the rain on a rooftop in the middle of nowhere, injured and all but stranded, was not how you had planned on spending your Saturday night.
As you distractedly tinker with the watch in a pathetic attempt to fix it, grumbling to yourself about your ruined weekend place, your spider sense goes haywire, ringing so loudly in your ears that your head spins.
You're so disoriented that you barely manage to dodge the dagger thrown your way.
A dagger that's... shaped like a plane? No, it looked more like a bird?
You step back cautiously as a man emerges from the shadows, jumping down from a ledge just above your head.Â
Heâs dressed strangely, which is one hell of a statement coming from you, someone dressed in a skintight spider suit. But-
âReally? A cape? Isnât that, like, super impractical?âÂ
The question leaves your mouth before you can think about it, but really â did Edna Mode teach people nothing?
He walks closer without a word. His silence is almost as unsettling as his gaze. It feels as if heâs dissecting you. He keeps a safe distance between the two of you.Â
Hm, heâs not completely lacking in the common-sense department, at least.
Then, after much deliberation, he speaks.
âThat light- you fell from the sky?â
His voice was cautious, every word measured and serious. His eyes scanned you from top to bottom, taking in your appearance without a word.Â
You sigh and prop a hand on your hip, trying to appear nonchalant, trying desperately not to wince at the flaring pain in your ribs. You were in no position to fight, so youâd either have to run, or talk your way to safety.Â
If there was one thing you were good at, it was talking.
âYep. Youâre so observant.â
He scowls, his mouth pinching slightly at the corners.
Okay, maybe sassing the man with a dorky superhero cape isnât a great idea⊠At least, not while I can barely stand.
So you change tactics.
âIâm sorry, I just- Look, uh, where exactly am I?âÂ
The look on his face tells you that that was not the right question to ask.
Great. A sceptic. Thatâs exactly what I needed.
So you backtrack, laughing awkwardly as you wave your hands dismissively.
âThat was a⊠a joke- A terribly timed joke. I apologise. Uh, your suit is⊠nice?â
Now he seems more exasperated than cautious, and he takes a step closer, reaching a hand out towards you.
Your spider sense flares, and you know that something about this man is dangerous. He appears young and relatively harmless, but appearances can be deceiving, you of all people know that.
So, you do the only thing you can think of at that moment. The only command your instincts give you. You jump away.Â
You jump.
And, naturally, you stick to the wall.
Itâs nothing. Itâs such a small action, one youâre more than accustomed to. You do it all the time, climbing walls and ceilings, scaling the sides of buildings. Other Spiders do it too. Even the civilians back on your own earth are used to it.
But itâs not nothing.
The man before you seems stunned beyond words, his outstretched hand hanging in midair as his jaw drops. He stares at you as you stand there, exactly perpendicular to him, sticking to the wall and defying all laws of nature as if itâs nothing.
His hand clenches in a fist and he reaches for a bo staff, the metal snapping loudly as he swings it outwards, the leather of his glove creaking as he tightens his grip.
âWho are you? Your name. Now.â he demands, his jaw clenched tightly.
You tilt your head.Â
Was this guy an idiot? The first rule of secret identities is that theyâre, yâknow, secret?
âOh, well, Iâm Recluse. Who are you?â
He ignores your question, slowly approaching you again, looking at you curiously. It might have seemed innocent to a third party, but your head was still ringing. You couldnât let this man get too close to you.
You sigh heavily.
Running it is.
You point your arm outwards, startling the man, who takes a wary step back. Before he can react or reach for you, you shoot a web out and swing away. His bo staff slams against the wall seconds after you leapt from it, the wall denting and crumbling from the force of his swing.
The look on his face was priceless, first fear at the sight of you jumping over the edge of the building, then surprise, then a flash of anger as you mockingly saluted him as you swung away. Youâd laugh if your ribs didnât feel like they were seconds away from shattering.Â
You swing through the unfamiliar city, the buildings passing by you in a flash. Coming to a stop is painful, your head swimming as you nearly slam into the side of an apartment building.Â
Thank God for spider-like adhesion.
You sit there for a long moment, taking a second to catch your breath and gather your bearings.
After you've managed to shake the dizziness away, you swing to the street down below.
While you think over your piss poor plan of finding some civilian clothing and learning more about this universe, you try to ignore the aching throb in your ribs. You werenât too concerned about the injury â one advantage of being Spiderwoman was that you healed at an incredible rate. Youâd just have to grin and bear until you healed.
****
Wayne Enterprises.
They specialised in a whole lot, but all that really interested you was their science division. In particular, the tech and biotech sector. The company seemed eerily similar to variations of other mega corporations youâd seen in your time travelling through the multiverse.
Stark Enterprises. Alchemax. Oscorp Industries. Roxxon Energy Corporation.
The list was endless, but youâd decided, after hours spent in a cramped internet cafĂ© doing informal research on the strange dimension you found yourself in, that investigating Wayne Enterprises was the best place to start if you hoped to ever fix the watch and return home.
Your plan of action was simple. Scratch that, it was terrible - held together with little more than hopes and prayers. But with your abilities, you were confident you could pull it off.
Thatâs how you found yourself confidently walking through the foyer of Wayne Enterprises, acting as if you were supposed to be there. Swiping an access card off of some poor, unsuspecting office worker was easier than it should have been.
You wandered around the reception area for a while, carefully surveying the room before approaching the elevator with the air of someone who knew where they were going.
Thereâll be signs for each division⊠Right?
Wrong.
Twenty minutes later, youâre still wandering aimlessly through corridors, hoping the right room would magically present itself to you.
So caught up in your own frustrated musings, you nearly miss the department youâd spent almost an hour looking for.
The sign above the door is pathetic - faded and barely visible, peeling and yellowed at the edges, like some old poster left out in the sun to age.
Shoving your irritation to the back of your mind, you quietly open the door, wincing as it creaks. Popping your head through the gap, you peek around the small room, and-
Nothing.
Itâs completely empty, the thick layer of dust settled over the countertops seeming to mock your failure of a heist.
A silent huff of annoyance is all you allow yourself, quickly shutting the door and continuing on your way. Determination fuels your every step, intent to find something, anything, so that your breaking-and-entering excursion wouldnât be for nothing.
****
Success.
You definitely werenât supposed to be in here. Not that you were supposed to be in the building in general, but this?
âThisâ being what appeared to be the CEOâs personal office, if the floor to ceiling windows and expensive leather furniture was anything to go by.
Youâd long since discarded any pretence of searching for the biotech department. Now, you were just snooping around, curious to see what exactly the CEO of Wayne Enterprises had laying around.
Naturally, youâd come across a few pictures of him in your investigation of Wayne Enterprises, and all youâd thought about the moment youâd seen his photo, was that Bruce Wayne was undoubtedly one of the most attractive men youâd ever met.
If you werenât caught in such a dire situation, you might have taken the time to fawn over him a while longer.
The office is odd. Thereâs something about it that you canât quite put your finger on, something uncanny. Maybe itâs that lack of colour or warmth, or the lack of any personal effects.
But that couldnât be it. Youâd seen plenty of rooms similarly decorated, but there was something about this in particular that set your hair on end. Not your spider sense, but your unconscious mind.
It almost felt as if you were being⊠observed. As if an unseen force was breathing down your neck, pinning you in place.
You distract yourself from your ever growing unease, pulling open drawers and rifling through cabinets.Â
What an obscene amount of paperwork.
Truly, you donât expect to find anything exciting or noteworthy. Maybe an office cellarette, maybe a Courtesan cigar.
What you donât expect is to find the parts you needed to fix your watch.Â
The parts that were supposed to have been in the biotech department.
Before you have much time to contemplate about why the tech worth billions is shoved behind a bookshelf, the door opens.
Youâre on the ceiling before he even enters the room, your breath tight in your chest, the klystron conductor clutched firmly in your fist as you try not to make any sudden movements.
Certain abilities youâd gotten as a result of the spider that bit you came in handy more often than not, namely the capability to survive weeks, if not months without food or water, and the preternatural proficiency you had hunting at night. Most useful had to be your camouflage abilities.
And while you were able to camouflage yourself, it came with its own set of drawbacks and caveats. Specifically in the fact that it was a camouflaging ability, not invisibility.
If you moved too suddenly, even someone unaware would notice you.
It takes you a moment to realise that the man is Bruce Wayne.Â
He looks different than in the photos - his back is broader, his hair darker, and his eyesâŠ
His eyes-
Your head feels like itâs being split open, a buzzing so persistent filling your ears that you almost slip off the wall, your adhesion faltering for a moment.
There had been one or two stories within the Spider Society, of moments where someone's spider sense had gone so haywire they couldnât tell up from down. Thereâd been a time where, supposedly, someone had even passed out from the pounding pressure in their skull.
Initially, youâd thought it was an exaggeration, a newfound hero overplaying a fight gone wrong in an attempt to save face.
Now, as he surveys the room, his azure eyes lingering on you for a moment longer than they should, you understand what they meant.
Panic isnât enough to describe how you feel at that moment.
You feel too exposed, your nerves raw and laid bare.Â
It⊠almost feels as if he knows youâre there.
But thatâs not possible. Thereâs no way.
You allow yourself the slightest sigh of relief, releasing the searing breath in your chest as he turns, moving towards his desk.
His silhouette is broad and domineering as he bows over his laptop, the sound of his tapping at the keys filling the sweltering silence of the room.Â
With his back turned towards you, you take your chance, slowly, so slowly making your way across the room, still sticking to the ceiling all the while.
You pause for a moment, freezing when you catch a glimpse of what exactly is on his screen.
The camera feed.
There you are.
Entering his office with a wide eyed look on your face.
And-
And thatâs you, barely ten minutes ago, rifling through drawers and shelves.
He pauses then, on the frame of you holding the klystron conductor with a satisfied smile and a slight sparkle in your eyes. He sighs heavily, his head dropping forward as he taps two fingers against the tabletop.
You donât linger to see his reaction, dropping down from the ceiling and slinking out the ajar door.
****
After youâd hightailed it out of the building as soon as you could, you hadnât dared to look back.
That man⊠Something about him set your nerves on edge. He wasnât normal.Â
Thankfully, youâd managed to get out without much hassle, and now you were wandering somewhat aimlessly through the city, looking for a place to set up shop, so to speak.
Spying a seemingly abandoned building across the street, you decided it would have to do for now.
As you cross the road, aiming for the darkened alleyway across the road, youâre slammed off of your feet.Â
By a car.
Someone hit you with a goddamn car.
You lay there, in the entryway of the alley, gasping for breath as you press your forehead to the wet concrete beneath you. But no matter how deeply you breathe, you canât seem to force yourself to your feet.
Spider sense my ass â what the fuck was that?! No warning, nothing!
The edges of your vision turn black, and you pray that you donât pass out as a pair of polished black leather shoes approach you.
A man crouches down in front of you, his words drowned out by the ringing in your ears.
He reaches out to you, intent on pressing his palm to your shoulder.Â
You pass out before he can touch you.
****
You mightâve been unconscious for a few hours or or a few weeks. You werenât sure.
All you knew was that you were in what appeared to be a medical facility, and you were restrained.Â
On the bright side, you felt a ton better than you had before you passed out. Though a look around proved that it might have been because of whatever concoction of drugs theyâd given you to numb the pain.Â
Well, with your increased metabolism, that comfort probably wouldnât last too long.
You lay back, content to stay there until a doctor or nurse came in to check on you.
Twenty minutes later, long after the medication had worn off, someone entered the room.
The man, grey-haired and dressed in an immaculately pressed tuxedo, pauses for a moment when he realises that youâre awake before continuing on his course towards you and proceeding to check your vitals.
âHow long have you been awake, Miss?âÂ
You donât respond.
Or rather, you canât.
Pain grips you like a vice, wrapping its fingers around your abdomen, digging its claws into your skull.
Stupid damned metabolism.
Apparently, your pain and distress are visible enough for the old gentleman to see.
He frowns, leaning closer slightly for a moment before striding towards a row of cabinets, sifting through them before returning with a needle and a small glass vial. He squints slightly as he fills the needle.
A lot of what happens after that is lost to you in your pained daze. Youâre awake, aware, but barely.
The older man is gone by the time you manage to pull yourself out of the strange, aching daze.
In his stead is Bruce Wayne.
The heart monitor betrays your panic, the sharp beeping filling the echoing space of the room.
He doesnât speak or move from his spot beside your bed, instead observing you with a flat look as your heart rate slowly evens out again.
After a long bout of silence, he hold up a hand, waving it slightly, and-
And heâs holding the klystron conductor.
Of course.
âDo you want to tell me why you were ransacking my office for a multibillion dollar piece of tech?â
Your hands clench and unclench around the stiff sheets, and you lick your lips before responding.Â
âNo, not particularly.â
You pause.Â
âDo you want to tell me why you hit me with your car?â
The corner of his mouth twitches.
He finds this funny?! What a psycho.
âWell, you did steal from me.â
âSo you hit me with a car?!â
He raises an eyebrow, seemingly unimpressed with your raised tone.
âRegardless⊠Iâm guessing it has something to do with this.â
Every muscle in your body goes rigid as he holds up your watch, casually dangling it from his forefinger as he carefully observes you for any signs of a reaction.
Okay, okay, just⊠play it cool.Â
âWhat, a watch? Pfft, keep it, itâs not worth much. Just some piece of crap I won in a claw machine ten years ago.â
Your knuckles are white from the force of your grip as you all but strangle the bed sheets beneath your grasp.Â
He smirks slightly, nodding empathetically.
âAh, of course. So, you wonât mind if I toss it in the trash, right? Since itâs just an old piece of crap and all that?â
You shrug, keeping your eyes on his and away from the watch. âGo for it.â
And he does.
He tosses it in the trash can beside your cot, still watching closely from some reaction.
You remain nonchalant.
â...hm, well. Rest up then. Youâll need all your energy- Prison in Gotham is a harsh place.â
You blanch.
âPrison? But- But technically I didnât even steal! You got it back, didnât you?â
His mouth quirks slightly at that.
Great. He finds amusement in my suffering.
âWhile thatâs true, you did break into Wayne Enterprises. And my personal office. I have the evidence. Thatâs grounds enough for an arrest, wouldnât you agree?â
He stands, sliding his hands into his pockets and taking a casual stance.
Fine. I can play along for a bit.
â...okay. I-Iâm sorry. Fine, you can hand me over to the cops, just- Just please let me rest for a bit? I think you mightâve concussed me.â
He huffs a laugh, his eyes lighting up in amusement. He knows youâre lying. And you know he knows.
âOkay. Take all the time you need.â
He leaves without another word, not looking back.
And not a moment too soon.
As the door shuts, you glitch, painfully spasming, your cells electrified and fizzing.
You fall out the cot, collapsing onto the floor as you grip the edge of the trash can, rifling through it in your search for the watch.
Slipping it onto your wrist and tightening the clasp, you-
âŠthis isnât my watch.
The door opens again and in strolls the culprit, a self-satisfied look in his eyes.
âJust a piece of junk, huh?â
âOh, fuck y-â
You almost bite your tongue off mid sentence as you glitch again, clinging to the railing of the cot as your muscles stiffen up and your blood roils in your veins.
Heâs speaking, confused and panicked as he calls out to you, and then someone else, rushing towards you. You think his hands might be on your arms. You arenât sure.
Then itâs over. Youâre hunched over, all but sprawled on the sparkling white tiles, shivering and sweaty, fighting the urge to throw up.Â
But itâs over.
You squint up at Bruce.
His face is hazy, and so is the figure behind his.
Everything is hazy, but you can feel the strap of your watch on your wrist, his hand just above it. You can feel how dry your mouth is, and the pounding of the growing migraine in your temples. And you can feel your spider sense tickling the edge of your consciousness, slowly growing in urgency with each passing moment.
âWhat the hell was that?â
The voice is a new one, one you havenât heard before. It belongs to the figure lingering behind Bruce.
His face comes into focus as the effects of your glitch wear off.
Blue eyes. Just as startling and off putting as Bruceâs.
In fact, he seems like a carbon copy. Almost. His skin seems slightly more tanned, and heâs leaner than his older companion. Shorter too, though just by a few inches.
âThatâŠâ you say in a weary manner, âwas a glitch. A painful one. I donât recommend trying it.âÂ
âA glitch?â
You deadpan, pushing yourself into a sitting position, leaning against the wall adjacent to your cot for support.
âYeah. I just said that. Pay attention.â
âSo that watch keeps you from⊠âglitchingâ then?âÂ
Bruce and his companion sport matching expressions of intrigue and dread.
âYep. Ten points to Gryffindor.â
â...whatâs a Gryffindor?âÂ
Good God, I shouldâve let Miguel kill me.
â...doesnât matter. Iâve overstayed my welcome.â
You get up with an embarrassing amount of difficulty, grunting as you pull yourself up using the cotâs railing. Your enhanced healing could only work so fast, it seemed, and clearly Bruce had done a number on you with the bumper of his car.
The short stride to the door is cut short as the young Bruce lookalike steps in front of you.
âSorry, but we canât let you leave just yet. Where exactly are you from?â
âEarth. Please move.â
âI canât do that. You should sit back down, you donât look too hot.â
You let out a strangled noise of disbelief.
âExcuse me, I look very hot. All the time.â
A deadpan look is all youâre granted in response.
Thatâs it, Iâve had enough.
âSeriously. Move.â
âNo. Sit down.â
Bruce sighs, massaging the bridge of his nose as you and his mini-me engage in a stare down.
âOkay, thatâs enough. Dick, back up. Miss, please, sit down before you hurt yourself.â
You pause, glancing at Bruce, then back at the man in front of you.
Thereâs a slight pause, and then-
You burst into a fit of giggles, clutching your pained ribs as you stumble back and collapse onto the cot.
âYour name is Dick? Dick? Seriously?â
His eyes harden at your laughter, his mouth pressed in a tight line.
â...itâs not that funny,â he mutters, unimpressed.
âYeah it is. Who willingly allows themselves to be called Dick? I can think of six penis jokes off the top of my head. Youâre practically begging for them.â
Bruce interjects before either one of you can continue, sending Dick a sharp look.
Ha. Dick.
âThatâs enough. What I want to know is why youâre glitching. And you wonât be going anywhere until I find out.â
You deadpan, fixing him with an incredulous look.
â...no offence, but you canât really keep me here.â
âI can, and I will.â
You snort, laughter bubbling up in your chest once more.
âNo, I mean- You can try, but you probably wonât succeed. No hard feelings though.â
âWhat, you mean because of your superpowers? Trust me, they wonât do you much good around here.â
His words give you pause, and you stare up at him silently for a moment.
âI donât- What are you talking about?â
âThereâs no use playing dumb,â Dick interjects. âIt wonât get you very far. We know about your abilities, and weâre telling you that we know about them so that you donât try anything.â
âAnd what exactly do you plan on doing if I do try something? Money can only get you so far.â
Your words make Bruceâs mouth twitch into a small smile once again.
âI have a theory, one I hope youâll entertain for a moment.â
He looks at you expectantly.
After a moment of deliberation, a heavy sigh, and a nod, he smiles in a self-satisfied manner and takes a seat on the foot of your bed. After a short nod to Dick, he exits the room, leaving you and Bruce alone.
âI think that youâre from Earth, like you said. Just not this Earth. I think that youâre from another universe or dimension, and youâre âglitchingâ because youâre not meant to be here. Am I right?â
Itâs an effort to hide your reaction and keep your face blank, but you manage. Barely.
âWell, thatâs certainly an⊠interesting theory. What sparked that idea?â
He shifts, staring at you for a moment, resting his palms on his thighs.
â...you fell from the sky. Out of what I can only assume is a portal. And your cells are basically decaying without that watch- or at least, thatâs what my colleagues at Star Labs tell me.â
You stiffen at his words, squinting for a beat.
âHow do you know I came through a portal? The only person around then was that idiot with the cape.â
Bruce frowns at your words.
âThe cape isnât stupid. Itâs practical.â
You deadpan. âItâs a deathtrap.â
âRegardless. I know about all that becauseâŠâ
He pauses.
âBecause Iâm Batman.â
â...Batman? Is that supposed to be a superhero alias or something? Thatâs the dumbest name Iâve ever heard- Did you pick it yourself?â
He lets out a noise of exasperation, annoyance painting his features.
âStop doing that.â
âDoing what?â
âChanging the topic. Itâs annoying.â
â...sorry.â
He shakes his head. âSo? Am I correct in my assumption?â
You take a moment to think, really think, weighing your options. He didnât seem like a bad person. Yes, he did hit you with his car. And yes, he wouldnât let you leave, butâŠ
But your spider sense had gone radio silent. If you were in any danger, itâd be ringing like crazy, soâŠ
âYes. Yeah, you are. Iâm not from this Earth. Iâm from Earth 662.â
âEarth⊠662?â
âI just said that. Does everyone on this Earth struggle with processing information?â
He fixes you with a stern look before continuing on.
âSo I assume youâre stranded here? Thatâs why you were trying to steal the klystron conductor.â
âUh uh,â you tut disapprovingly. âI was borrowing it. I wouldâve returned it⊠Eventually.â
Bruce nods along, rolling his eyes slightly as he continues.
â...Earth 662, huh⊠How many variations of Earth are there then-â
âI canât tell you that.â
Your response is immediate and stern, leaving no room for debate.
Thankfully, Bruce doesnât kick up a fuss.
âHm⊠Well then, do you know how to get back?â
âOf course I do. I just need to fix up the watch. Hence the little heist I pulled off at your office.â
âAnd do you know how to fix it?â
You press your mouth into a tight line, avoiding the knowing look he gives you.
âWell, I mean⊠how hard can it be?â
He sighs. âThatâs what I thought youâd say.â
Thereâs a pause, a lull in the conversation, and neither of you say anything for a long while, both lost in your own thoughts.
âOkay. Hereâs what I propose. You obviously donât know what youâre doing-â
âHey!â
â-so Iâll help you out. Iâll help fix that watch of yours, and let you stay with me while we try to find you a way back home. In exchange, youâll tell me about things from your Earth, and about the multiverse. Sound fair?â
As much as youâd like to argue, to refuse his more than generous offer, you know you canât. You were smart, but not in the areas needed to fix the watch.Â
You needed his help.
Damn it.
â...fine. Deal.â
His hand feels cool and calloused in yours, and his grip is firm and reassuring.
If only you knew then how wrong things would go. Maybe youâd have refused his deal.
****
Four months later.
â...still nothing?â
âNo. Iâm sorry. Iâve sent Dick to Central City to find a few more parts.â
âItâs not your fault, I just⊠I really want to go home.â
It had been months.Â
Youâd been stuck on this strange Earth, so similar to your own, for months.
While the Wayne Manor was nice, and its inhabitants lovely, you missed your home. You missed your family.
But there was nothing to be done about it. Youâd damaged your watch more than youâd originally thought, the travel mechanism was completely destroyed.Â
Initially, youâd been foolishly optimistic, believing youâd return home within a week.
But that week had passed. Then another. And another.Â
Time kept passing, and you were still stuck here, four months later.Â
At least you had decent company.
While you didnât exactly trust them, youâd grown fond of them. You might even have begun to consider them friends.
Dick had grown on you over the months, despite the rocky start to your friendship. He was reliable in a way that reminded you too much of the many variations of Peter Parker youâd met throughout your time in the Spider Society.
Tim, who youâd discovered was the âidiot in the capeâ youâd met on your first night on this Earth, was just as easy to get along with. At first, heâd thrown you off a bit with his unsociable personality, but heâd slowly opened up over time. Really, he was more of a nerd than anything else.Â
And heâd heeded your words of wisdom regarding the cape.
Damian, Bruceâs âprodigeeâ, was someone you still had trouble getting along with. Your relationship had improved over the months, but barely. Before, heâd outright ignore your presence. Now, he at least graced you with a nod of acknowledgement or the occasional verbal greeting.Â
How kind of him.
Bruce had become somewhat of a parental figure after he had walked in on you crying one night. While you were embarrassed, heâd taken it in stride, comforting you as best as he could, reassuring you that theyâd find a way to send you back home.
âOh, I know, I know. Weâre all trying our best, just⊠try to be patient. Weâll find something soon, I promise.â
His palms rest on your shoulders, patting you reassuringly.
You nod in agreement, too tired and disheartened to say anything else as you mumble something about going to bed, turning to leave the room.
****
âAnd youâre sure no one knows sheâs here? If they found outâŠâ
âYes Dick, Iâm sure. Iâm not an idiot, I know how to wipe a hard drive.â
Thereâs a slight lull in conversation as the two wait for the rest of the group to arrive.
A few minutes later, Bruce enters the room, Damian trailing behind him.Â
He walks to where the two are seated and puts the klystron conductor on the table before them.
âThatâs the last one. Have you done everything else?â
Tim nods, gesturing to a singular hard drive placed on the coffee table.
âThatâs the only remaining evidence of her presence on this Earth.â
Bruce nods and sighs, looking between the three men with him before Dick interjects.
âDo you- I mean, are we really going to do this? Weâre supposed to be the heroes. This⊠This isnât something we can undo.â
All three of his companions hold a steely glint in their eyes as they nod.
âIâm sure. Itâs better this way. Sheâs just a kid, she doesnât know what she needs. Sheâll thank us for this in a few years.â
Thereâs a tense pause for a moment before he speaks again.
âDo it.â
And just like that, the final klystron conductor is destroyed, along with any hope youâd had of returning home.
â...sheâll thank us.â

ïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïčïč
You were cold, wet and scared. You got lost in the forest and to add onto your bad luck, it was raining like crazy! To the point where you were sure you'd be sick if you even got out of here in the first place.
But after long time of walking it seemed like you already collected enough bad luck to get some good luck for a change, because you found a big mansion that didn't look THAT abandoned!
You knocked few times before thinking that no one must be home and you really need a shelter... so you came in, announcing your presence to not be mistaken by Intruder.
"Hello? I'm not a thief! I'm just looking for help..!"
Not getting anymore answer, you decided to go deeper and hopefully find something or someone! It was best you could rely on after all!
You went through plenty of corridors, passed lots of rooms going into each one after small knock and asking if anyone was there, saying you just need help. But of no use...
That's untill you entered one room, that looked like office. You slowly opened the door, not wanting to cause chaos.
"Hello? I'm not an intruder, I just-"
"Need help? Yeah, you're so loud I heard you an hour ago."
You looked up and saw girl with gray hair and wolf ears, as well as fluffy wolf tail... You thought werewolf's existed in just fairy tales!! You were sure it's a prank on you but nonetheless, you were too spooked out to even move.
"You're scared and yet you walked into werewolf's mansion on your own? Have my mercy and leave before I do anything."
She said but you were so desperate for help that you were willing to even trust a werewolf!
"I-I don't know where to go! You're my last source of help..."
"I'm a werewolf. Do you have zero survival instincts?!"
"Please, you have to help me!! I just want to get home, practice on keyboard and live for once!"
"You.. play on keyboard...?"
You looked up a bit surprised that her voice softened at the mention of your hobby. But you weren't about to complain! If anything you used the fact she's becoming more willing!
"Yeah?"
"Hm..."
She looked down as she sat on her chair clearly lost in thoughts.
"(Keyboard... determination to live your life to the fullest... it's just like... her..."
She scolded herself in head for even remembering her past friends. But it was too late now... she was already there and the only thing she could do now was go with it, since she knows she can't decline helping you NOW...
"Where do you live?"
"Oh, in [city name]. But if you don't know where it is it's-"
You were about to start describing her how it looks in order to get your chances of getting good directions higher! But you were cut off by her.
"It's fine, I do. You simply have to head North when you leave this mansion."
"Thank you! You don't know how much you're helping me here!!"
"I do. Go."
You nodded not wanting to piss her anymore then needed. You headed to leave this room, but when you were in frame, you heard her speak up one more time.
"If you ever get lost again, just come to this place. I'll tell you where to go."
You nodded yet again, this time with grateful smile before leaving this room completely, as well as the mansion and headed North like she told you to!
"(Hm... if I ever get lost again to come talk to her? Was it an invitation?!)"
You thought to yourself before chuckling and continuing your way back home~

"You sure you don't wanna come to the ball?" I asked Mathilda, climbing down the dormitories' stairs.
"No, I'd rather stay..." Her mouth opened in agape when she saw me. "You look... Wow."
"Why, thank you." I replied, walking towards my best friend with a smile. "I'll probably be here before 10:00 pm." I assured her, squeezing her shoulders. "And we can gossip a bit."
"Already looking forward to it." Mathilda patted my hand with a chuckle. "Have fun, will you?"
I nodded and waved her goodbye before leaving the common room.
"Bloody hell, Y/l/n!" George, who as promised, had been waiting for me at the entrance of the dungeons, shamelessly though harmlessly, checked me out. "You clean up nice, huh?"
"Of course I do." I walked to meet him at his spot. "You don't look so bad yourself, Weasley." With his chin up and a proud smile, he offered me his arm, which I gladly took, and we headed off to the Great Hall.
A fairly big crowd had formed at the doors, mostly conformed by people who were waiting for their partner slash group, and some not-so-subtle gossips.
While I intended to go straight into the Hall, George tugged me away from the shortest path, claiming that he wanted to 'have an overall view'.
I reckoned he had something else in mind when we passed by Fred and Angelina, both immersed in their conversation until my friend caught a glimpse of us.
"Damn Y/n!" I held back George, who was playing dumb for some reason, and made my way to the couple. "You look SO good, doesn't she, Fred?" She nudged her partner, giving him a knowing grin.
"I guess you look nice." His nonchalant reply was accompanied with a shrug.
"She looks breathtaking, actually." George's correction left me staring at him speechless. "Just like Angelina."
Oh well. "Yeah" I agreed, clinging onto my partner's forearm, finally getting a vague idea of what was going on ânot quite there yet, though. "Angelina, love, you look astonishing, right George?"
"Right." I could see my friend's cheeks reddening ever so slightly whilst making eye contact with George.
"Shall we go in?" I suggested, already heading to the gates.
FRED'S P.O.V
'Breathtaking' was the exact word I was thinking about when Angelina asked me about Y/n, and George knew it.
The girls probably didn't catch how my jaw dropped when I saw her, but my brother did.
He knew it.
"Go with her, yeah?" I requested to Angelina, gesturing at Y/n and at the Great Hall simultaneously. "George, can I have a word with you?"
He nodded and whispered "Go on, ladies." before walking to me. "What is it, Freddie?"
"What's your game?"
"I think I don't follow." The fact that he had the nerve to speak that blantant lie angered me more than I would ever admit.
"Why is she your date?"
"Why is she not your date?" He retorted, triggering a gasp from me, followed by a scoff. "You're not only completely oblivious, you're also a coward."
"Beg your pardon?" Was the only thing I could bring myself to say; I blamed the shock caused by my brother's nonsense.
"AND you stole my date." Oh, so this was about Angelina. "Now if you excuse me," he patted my back a couple times. "I'll go dance all night with MY absolutely breathtaking date."
"Have fun with Slytherin girl, Georgie." I replied, sprinting to reach him. "I'll go dance with our beautiful Angelina."
"Tosser." I could hear him say as I jogged into the Hall to reach the girls.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
READER'S P. O. V.
George probably wasn't the best dancer, but he clearly knew some moves, and made me want to stay on the dancefloor for a good couple of hours, having a great time.
That's one of the reasons why I decided to help him out.
"Oi!" He leaned on and I stood on my tiptoes, holding onto his forearms so I could speak directly into his ear. "Wanna dance with Angelina?"
"Maybe" He slightly pulled away and both our gazes spotted the girl, dancing madly with Fred. "Yeah! Yeah I do!" He shouted so I could hear him over the music, now that we were apart.
"Alright, come!" I tugged his hand and together we narrowed the already short distance between them and us.
The timing was perfect, almost as if it was meant to be like that; the moment we reached them a slow song started to play.
"Angelina, may I steal your date for a dance?" I requested, not waiting for Angelina's nod before letting go of George and tugging Fred's hand. "You can have mine." I spared my friend a teasing smile and a wink while I pulled her date away from George and her.
"Stealing me away, huh?" Once we were far enough, I spun around and held up one of his hands, his left one falling on my waist and my right one on his shoulder. "Eager to be near me again, Y/l/n?"
"So I'm not 'Slytherin girl' anymore?" I raised my eyebrows at him with a smirk on my face as we swayed.
"You heard that?" All from sudden he turned somehow self-conscious.
"This may come as a shock to you," I peeked over his shoulder to check on George and Angelina. "but you two are quite loud."
"I didn't mean it." His word had way more regret than necessary for something as stupid as what he was sort of apologizing for.
"I know." My eyes returned to his just in time for him to made me twirl and pulling me back to him, this time a bit closer than we were before. "Asking Angelina out was a shitty move." I pointed out.
"You won't believe me," he began, "But I completely forgot." I snorted. "I swear!" His eyes widened and both our mouths twisted into an amused smile. "She was near me when Ron asked me who I'd be taking, and I didn't think twice."
A soft, genuine laugh escaped my lips; one which made the boy in front of me smile.
"Is he pissed?"
"Earlier? Very. Now?" I gestured behind Fred, urging him to look at his twin brother, now kissing Angelina. "I don't think so, no."
This time it was his laugh that made a smile tug the corners of my mouth.
"You do look breathtaking." He spoke quietly, almost in a whisper. "Dunno why I didn't tell you earlier."
"Because you're a twit." He chuckled, shaking his head with his eyes fixed on our feet. "You look very handsome, though."
"I am very handsome." He corrected me, looking at me again, now with that damn smug face.
Out of every possible comeback, I chose the one that he expected the least. "Yes, you are." His cheeks turned mildly red and his grin fluttered; I counted it as a win.
"You're beautiful." He returned the compliment, after a moment of silence, to which I responded with a confident 'I know'. "So cocky."
"That makes the two of us." I pointed out.
Silence fell among us again. Comfortable silence, though, one that I could get used to.
Another twirl, another pull to stand even closer.
A small lean was enough for my head to rest against his chest. I blamed tiredness for the need to do that, but I didn't find anything to blame for the way his heart was pounding against his chest, nor for that strange feeling in my stomach.
As soon as he took a deep breath, we both eased into each other's arms, giving up the tension that our bodies had held.
We stayed like that for a while, until I looked around and realized most people had left, George and Angelina included; the dancefloor was now almost empty.
"I don't know what time is it," I spoke, letting my fingertips trace random patterns over his shoulder, dancing down to his chest.
"Me neither" he spoke, making me sway.
"I reckon this is the longest we've been together without jumping down each other's throats." I observed. "And it's probably the longestâ"
My words died when, without any kind of warning, his lips landed on mines.
His right hand unconsciously gripped mine for an instant with such force, almost as if it was holding onto it for dear life.
Before I could even think about kissing him back, he retreated back to his previous position, offering me a smile I couldn't decipher accompanied by a wink that made him look relaxed an confident.
All façade, I thought to my self, as he said nothing âno teasing, no cracking jokes; he just kept slowdancing, his hands now more loose, seeming like he was prepared for me to run away; his gaze was also casted down and his cheeks flushing.
I would have teased him if it wasn't for the way I felt my own face burning.
I did let go of his hold, and he subtly stepped back, lowering his arms.
Just like me, he didn't have time to react when I pulled him down, cupping his cheeks for a proper kiss, which he returned instantly.
I felt both his hands on my hips as he leaned on, drawing me against him as close as he possibly could, while my hands left his cheeks to circle his neck.
All of a sudden I remembered that I needed to breath; I broke away, leading my hands to his shoulders, where I could feel how heavy his breathing was.
"What's just happened?" I mumbled, my eyes fluttering open to look into his.
"Dunno." He confessed. "Did you like it?"
"Very much." I replied instinctively, not bothering on thinking it through.
"Wicked." He muttered against my lips before going in for the third kiss, this one more heated.
With a hand on his chest i slightly pushed him away, scanning the place around us before asking, "Wanna go for a walk around the castle?"
"Please." His response was so immediate that we both had to chuckle at it.
"Wicked." I mocked, earning a playful push from him. I my fingers interlaced with his and I led the way.
~~~~~~~~~~~~
FRED'S P. O. V.
"Shhh!" I playfully shushed Y/n's giggles, loosely hugging her from behind with my lips pecking her shoulder as we went downstairs in the direction of her House. "You don't want us to get caught, do you?" I let go of her waist just when we found ourselves halfway through the corridor.
"Merlin's beardâ" Y/n, who had turned to face me, widened her eyes at the sight of me under the dim lights of the dungeons. "You're a mess." She whispered between quiet laughs, raising her hands up to my face to try and remove some of the lipstick stains she had left all over me.
"Don't you dare laugh, woman." I feigned pain, only making her giggle more. "You made a mess out of me."
She held my chin and moved my face from side to side, checking if she had made it any better. "What am I supposed to do with your neck?" She huffed.
"Place a couple more kisses there?" I suggested with a smirk, fixing her hair as best as I could. "Or a bite, you choose."
"I'm serious." Her thumb gently rubbed the side of my neck, sending shivers down my spine.
"Let them there for people to see." I was joking. My tone was playful. I didn't really mean it.
It was just a joke, right?
Her hands slid down my chest before leaving my body. "I'd rather not to." She replied absent-minded, making me realize that maybe I wasn't joking; maybe I wanted people to seeâ to know.
She didn't, though.
"Hey, everything's alright?" She questioned, concern making its way to her face when her eyes found mines.
"Of course." I repliedâ no, I lied. I lied to her and to myself. "Just tired."
"No wonder why." She laughed at her own innuendo, but the only thing she got out of me was an unenthusiastic half smile. "I'm gonna head back now." She added, probably sensing something wasn't right. "Get some sleep."
"I'll go have a shower." I informed her, stepping back in the stairs' direction without breaking eye contact.
"See you in a couple of hours." She responded, mirroring my moves, but towards her common room.
I nodded briefly before heading up to my own House, craving a cold shower to shake her voice off my mind and detach her touch and kisses from my skin.

Summary: Freed and Gajeel were total opposites in every way, only connected by the guild. When they were forced to train together under Makarov's orders, they expected antagonism and mistrust. Instead, they were given a lesson in how quickly opposition can turn to attraction. The issue: let the budding relationship simmer away, or let it explode. [Freed x Gajeel Multi-chapter]
Notes: Hey everyone, welcome to the last chapter. Thank you so much for reading through this. I know itâs a crack ship and not everyoneâs cup of tea, but I really enjoyed writing it. I hope you all enjoyed it :)

Chapter Ten - Moving Forward
Two Weeks Later
"You feelin' okay?"
That was a loaded question, and one Freed wasn't yet ready to deal with. He and Gajeel were walking from the guildhall infirmary side by side, the first time that Freed had been outside since his demon had left him. It was mid morning and an entirely pleasant day, and Freed found himself angry at the sun beating down on them both. If it were raining or stormy then at least it would feel appropriate for his mood.
A cane. For the rest of his life, he would need a cane.
In terms of a mage's possible injuries, ending up with a cane wasn't much to complain about. People had been killed, mutilated and injured beyond recovery, so having to walk with a cane was hardly the worst that could happen. But every time he thought about it, Freed could only see a future limited by a piece of wood he would need to lean on.
The demon, it seemed, wasn't only eating away at his soul. It had slowly been sapping away at his energy both physical and magical, and the effect was more physical than Porlyiusca had thought. Porlyusica had said that, though she didn't know how long it would take, the demon would have eventually started to make Freed wither if it had been left to stay inside of him. The issue had been that, as the demon was being dragged from his soul, it's influence had exploded and affected Freed greatly, particularly in his lower right leg.
Porlyusica had said the influence had been like an ocean, slowly wearing away the coast. But as the demon was taken, it had turned into a tsunami.
He had been assured that the injury wasn't life threatening, and it was something that he could more-or-less get passed. Eventually, he would manage to bring the strength back to his leg, and when that happened the cane would only be a precaution for the occasional moments where the injury flared back up. Apparently he would be able to work as a mage again once the recovery began, though would have to change his fighting styles and work back up to the missions he had been taking.
Maybe he should be thankful that he would be able to continue working at all. He wasn't.
"Conflicted," Freed eventually said, walking beside Gajeel and determined to keep pace with him despite the unfamiliarity of the cane. "I'm glad you're here, though. Thank you."
"I wasn't gonna be anywhere else," Gajeel said firmly, and that was something of a consolation.
There was a lull in the conversation, and Freed knew what it was. Gajeel couldn't think of anything to say, because there was nothing that he could say to make the situation any better. No doubt, Gajeel knew that Freed wasn't fond of pity, and a lot of what a person might say in the situation might be seen as pitying, and so Gajeel was probably remaining quiet. Freed hoped this wasn't going to be a sign of things to come.
As if reading his thoughts, Gajeel suddenly perked up and looked at Freed with a mischievous smile. It was forced, but Freed didn't want to linger on that and so pushed it to the side and quirked up an eyebrow in a question.
"The stripper and the puppeteer are making Sparky and the flirt do their punishment this week," Gajeel said, and Freed laughed a little. "You wanna see them makin' asses out of themselves while being ordered around by two assholes."
"They actually went through with the butler idea?" Freed chuckled.
"Yeah. Even the thing about them being in their underwear and everything," Gajeel grinned, and maybe he was just happy to hear Freed amused. The last few weeks, he had been downcast at the best of times. "Even made sparky wear bunny ears. Though he was gonna fry all of us with how pissed off he looked. We were all laughin' pretty damn hard,"
"He takes bets seriously," Freed smiled. This topic, as stupid as it was, was a welcome distraction. "Are you sure you wish for me to see my ex in such a state of undress."
"Fuck yeah i do," Gajeel grinned. "You see him, then you see me and realise how much better you are now."
"So you intended to strip off too?" Freed probed. "I am being spoiled."
"Anythin' for my prince," Gajeel said.
Prince. Gajeel had been calling Freed that a lot over the last few weeks, and it always made him blush just a little. There was something so honest about the way he said it, as if Freed really were a man of importance to him as well as being someone to be revered. Freed wasn't the type of man to need complete adoration from a partener, but the fact Gajeel was so unquestioningly open about his reverence for him made Freed delighted. It was certainly better than city-boy, too.
And when he said he would do anything for Freed, it sounded like he meant it. Not just in the sense that he would do anything to make Freed's life easier now that this had happened. No, it felt like Gajeel was naturally happy to do things for Freed because he wanted to. Freed felt the same as Gajeel in that respect; he would do anything for him.
"I think maybe I'd like to go home for tonight," Freed eventually said, and Gajeel nodded.
"Thought you might," He said. "Don't worry about groceries or anything, I sorted 'em out. Spoke to yer team, so I've got everything you normally have, I think. Might make a cottage pie for dinner, Sparky said you like 'em. And I went to that bakery downtown and got you a banoffee pie for dessert."
And with a few statements, Gajeel had gotten Freed to cry.
The man who, less than a month ago, had been nothing more than a tedious acquaintance of Freed's was now somehow one of the most treasured people in his life. Because how could he not be? How could Freed not be entirely enamoured by a man like Gajeel? A man who had visited Freed every day in the infirmary, even sneaking in some nights despite rules saying he shouldn't. A man who, despite being known for his antisocial nature, had spoken to Freed's team to find out what he liked and what he did when the world was getting on top of him. A man who knew that something so trivial and comparatively not important as an empty fridge would be Freed's first thought after what had happened.
Gajeel noticed his sudden emotion and turned immediately. He looked at Freed with such open concern on his face, cupping Freed's cheeks with his large and calloused hands so carefully that Freed might swoon. Damn this brute of a man and his hidden fragility.
"It'll get better," Gajeel whispered. "I know it's shit now, and I ain't gonna tell ya how to feel 'cause that'd be shitty of me, but you'll get past it. Yer Freed fucking Justine, remember."
"I know," Freed chuckled, blinking a few times to cut off the tears. "Thank you."
"I ain't gonna let you do this alone, neither," Gajeel kept on. "Anythin' you need, anytime, I'm gonna do it for you. And you know you've got a whole guild full of people who'll do exactly the same. You'll get through it."
"I will," Freed whispered, and smiled at Gajeel. "You're too good to me."
"Like hell I am," Gajeel argued. "Now move yer ass. I wanna get in that damn bed of yours again. Mine feels shitty after havin' yours and yer runes would only let me in when I was bringing groceries."
Freed laughed at that. Gajeel certainly wasn't going to be treating him like glass. Good.
They walked down the streets of Magnolia side by side. For the most part it seemed normal, and on the few occasions where Freed's grasp on the cane wavered, or his leg buckled under him, Gajeel would help him back to being stable, held him while he walked for a few steps, and then acted like nothing had happened. Respectful, unpatronising, but there for him.
Gajeel was going to be there for him, and at that moment that was all Freed needed.
ââ
One Month Later
"Come on Prince," Gajeel yelled. "Nearly there, baby. Yer so close."
Gajeel was clapping as a form of motivation, standing on the side of the lake. He and Freed were in the forest that their relationship had begun in, having spent the night camping under the stars. The morning was a brisk and cold one, but Gajeel didn't care, as he watched his boyfriend keenly and with a ridiculous grin across his face.
Freed was so close. He was so close to getting there and Gajeel was so damn proud of him.
The couple had spoken at length about how Freed was going to move past his injury, and Freed had been adamant that he wanted to be as fit as he could and return to his missions as soon as he could. While Gajeel had been a little hesitant, he had worked with Freed on how they would accomplish that, and they had settled on building up his leg's muscle in small bursts. They would make goals for Freed to accomplish, and once he had accomplished one, he would move onto something more strenuous.
Swimming the entire length of the lake was the first goal. Although swimming didn't rely too heavily on his leg muscle, it kept it moving and put some on some burn. Multiple times a week they would get to the forest, and Freed would attempt it. So far, Gajeel had needed to dive in after and help him.
But this time, it looked different.
Freed was getting closer and closer to the shoreline and Gajeel could feel that this was the one. Finally Freed was going to get to the other end of the lake without any assistance. The water parted with each swift motion, and Gajeel was grinning from ear to ear as his boyfriend got closer.
"You can do this baby," He yelled again. "Yer fucking amazing. Yer so close."
Maybe Freed heard, because he seemed to speed up. As he approached the shoreline, Gajeel picked up his cane and rushed to where Freed was going to end up. He was going to do it! He was going to make it.
The moment Freed's hand hit the side of the lake, he removed his head from under the water. A look of shock turned to something close to joy, and Gajeel relished every second of it. To see the man he loved so happy, so proud of himself, was tremendous. Better still, Freed pushed himself out of the lake with no assistance, perhaps on an adrenaline high, and managed to stand up. It was wobbly, and he reached for his cane the moment it was within reach so he could prop himself up on it, but the fact he could do that after pushing his body so hard in swimming was incredible.
"Shit," Gajeel grinned. "You fucking-"
He was cut off when Freed grabbed Gajeel by the collar, pulled him down into a strong, passionate kiss. Gajeel stepped into the kiss and wrapped his arms around Freed's waist, not caring for how wet his clothes were going to be. He kissed back with as much passion as he could, because fuck - Freed had done it!
When they pulled apart, Freed had his left hand wrapped around Gajeel's neck. He looked practically giddy at his achievement. Fuck that was a handsome look on Freed, and Gajeel wanted to see it more. He pulled away, looked his man up and down and grinned.
Bastard shouldn't be able to kiss like that while dressed in a speedo.
Only Freed would be able to take the choice to give up sex until he was feeling reovered and turn it into a game where he'd try and turn Gajeel on every chance he got, just to piss him off. Motherfucking tease
"How d'you feel?" He asked, because Freed's health was more important than his arousal. "Nothing hurting too bad?"
"It burns, but like my arms do after lifting weights," Freed said, tentatively raising his right leg and moving it slightly. "But overall, I feel fantastic. Better than I have since everything began, I think."
"I'm glad," Gajeel grinned. "You wanna have some breakfast. Brought some pancake mix from the store if you wanna try it."
"Great," Freed grinned, and began to walk beside Gajeel to where they had set up camp. He looked up towards Gajeel with a spark in his eye that had been missing for some time. It was incredible to see it again. "I want to try and do it again tomorrow, to make sure that it wasn't a fluke. Would you mind sleeping here another night?"
"Of course not," Gajeel said immediately. Freed didn't need to ask.
"Once I'm sure that I can swim the length consistently, I think it makes sense to start working on exercises that focus on my leg, rather than using it as a secondary point of focus," Freed continued, seemingly unaware as Gajeel wrapped a towel around his bare shoulders. "I have a leg press at home which I could use, though perhaps that might be too much too soon. I suppose we can test it, can't we? You wouldn't mind being there, just in case something goes wrong."
"That's fine," Gajeel nodded, grinning at his boyfriend.
"Or perhaps some kind of ankle weights would be better," Freed continued, walking towards their camp as if walking on air. "They're not the most elegant solution, but they would certainly help build up muscle without too much strain. Perhaps you could make some for me, if you found the time of course. Maybe a continuous piece of iron that would snake around my calf, that way the weight would be distributed better around the leg."
"Makes sense," Gajeel said, chuckling. He was fairly sure he wasn't really a part of this conversation Freed was having with himself.
"I did want to start work on making the barn at the back of my property into a gym, but I've kept putting it off," Freed continued. "The space is rather a mess. Maybe the two of us could clean it out together. That would get me moving and help me be physical while using the cane," He then looked up to Gajeel and frowned. "Why are you smiling like that at me?"
"Yer cute when yer scheemin'," Gajeel grinned. "Glad I get to watch it."
Freed looked like he wanted to argue, so Gajeel leant over, pressed a kiss on the crown of his head, and smiled. Things were getting better.
ââ
Two Months Later
"Freed, no," Bickslow said firmly. "You can't do this to us."
"Why did you think this was a good idea?" Gray demanded, resting his head in his hands. "You've doomed us all."
"You're all so dramatic," Freed chuckled, leaning back in the chair and moving the wrapped box so it was out of sight again. "And I'm afraid that, when I'm choosing a gift for my boyfriend, I didn't prioritise the opinions of my friends."
"You should have," Evergreen huffed. "This is going to be awful."
The guild's New Years party had been going for hours now, and it had been a fun affair. People had drunk, made fools of themselves, and shared tender moments with their fellow guild members. While Freed hadn't engaged in much of the action, other than beating Max, Loke and Natsu in an arm wrestling contest, he had enjoyed a night of people watching and drinking with his friends and boyfriend.
As the night wore on, The Raijinshuu had flocked to a corner and sat at a table. Not only The Raijinshuu though, as Gajeel, Gray and Elfman were now mainstays of their table. It was odd, how quickly their small group had expanded and how easy these new friendships had been formed. Even Laxus, who had openly shown frustration at the fact he could have to go through the torture of becoming friendly with new people, had managed to find common ground with their new partners, even if he did pretend to be annoyed by their presence.
Or perhaps he was distracted. He and Loke could often be found glancing across at each other in subtle moments. Perhaps being forced to dress as sexy bunny-butlers had brought them together in a way fighting side by side just couldn't.
They were less subtle than Evergreen and Elfman, though. It was frustrating.
At that moment, Gajeel and Laxus had gone to the bar to collect the latest round. Freed had taken the opportunity to have a little fun with everyone else sitting at the table, and told them what his specific gift for Gajeel was. They had been less than pleased when they found out what it was, which only made Freed even more sure he had chosen the correct present.
"Hey," Gajeel said, placing a tray of drinks on the table and kissing Freed atop the head as he passed. "Why does everyone but you look pissy?"
"I told them that we couldn't open our gifts without you and Laxus being here," Freed lied smoothly, ignoring the roll of the eyes from Gray and Bickslow. "They were so enthusiastic to see what we've all got for each other, they didn't want to wait."
"Okay?" Gajeel frowned. "I don't believe ya, but if that's the story yer gonna go with, then I ain't gonna fight ya."
Freed chuckled. Gajeel really could see right through him.
Even though he didn't believe Freed's lie, the group did begin to open the presents they had gotten for each other. Elfman and Evergreen exchanged gifts first, doing so with the maturity of a woman who didn't know how to show off her affection, and the blush of a man who was delighted at even the smallest of compliments. Next, Bickslow and Gray, who had similar minds and had gotten each other gag gifts; Gray had been gifted ten coupons for a night with Bickslow, Bickslow had been gifted a pair of mens lingerie. Even Laxus had been given a gift from an 'anonymous' source, who had gotten him a small pendant shaped like a lion.
They really needed to be more subtle.
When it came to Freed and Gajeel, Gajeel offered his wrapped gift first. The box was long and thin, and Freed looked at it with curiosity as he began to unwrap it. When he looked at Gajeel, the dragon slayer was nervous.
"If you don't like it, that's okay?" Gajeel said, and Freed frowned. "It was kinda risky. So don't feel bad if you wanna change it back."
Not entirely sure what to expect, Freed opened the box. Inside of it was a new walking cane, one made of both wood and metal, a hell of a lot nicer than the one he'd gotten from Porlyusica. For a moment he wondered what Gajeel had been so nervous about, and what he meant by 'change it back', when he saw the handle. Rather than a simple handle, Gajeel had placed the hilt of Freed's sword on top of it.
The sword had been a constant burden for Freed over the past few months. He couldn't use it as his hand was occupied with the cane, so he had been forced to retire it. Looking at it was like a reflection of how much he had lost, and it had gotten so bad that he had put it in the attic and locked it away. Gajeel had apparently found it.
"I know the sword meant a lot to ya, but after what happened it made you feel shitty," Gajeel explained. "But I wanted it to make you feel good. Not something from yer past, but something from yer future."
"It's beautiful," Freed whispered, running his hand over the metal that had once been his hilt.
The sword had been the first thing he had brought with his own money, and the hilt had been the deciding factor over all the other weapons the armory had. For most of his life, it had been his most prized possession. Now, with the hilt attached to something that he could use, rather than something that taunted him with it's past importance, he could look at it with fondness and pride again.
"You sure?" Gajeel asked.
"Yes," Freed said earnestly. "It's perfect."
"You ain't seen everythin' yet," Gajeel was grinning now, and Freed removed it from it's box. "If y' push it into the ground and twist it anti-clockwise, you'll see what else I did."
Freed did as instructed, and heard a small click come from inside the cane. He lifted it up, and a thin blade was revealed to him. He looked at the shining metal with wonderment, and slowly brought the blade towards him. Another sword, more lightweight and agile than his previous blade had been, which worked better for his current state.
"I smelted down the old one and made it from the same metal, so it'll carry all the enchantments you put on it," Gajeel explained. "Thought you'd need one for when you started working again."
"It's perfect," Freed whispered, grinning at the blade. "Thank you so much, Gajeel."
"Happy new year, prince," Gajeel mumbled, pressing his lips against Freed's for a chaste kiss. "Yer gonna kick ass, I know it."
"I certainly intend to," Freed smiled, reaching for his gift to Gajeel. "While I admit it's not as thought out as yours was - I don't think anything could be - I do hope you enjoy what I got you."
Gajeel grinned and began to rip open the present, and everyone at the table who knew what he'd been gifted seemed downtrodden at the thought. Gajeel, however, looked into the large box with sparkling eyes and the biggest, most excited grin on his face. A moment later, he brandished his new electric guitar with anticipation rushing through him. Yes, Freed had definitely gotten him the right gift.
"Holy shit," Gajeel said with an excited laugh. "This is fucking kickass."
"I'm glad you like it," Freed smiled. "I should say, I expect a show."
Everyone groaned, but Gajeel ignored them. "Fuck yeah yer getting a show."
Before leaving, however, Gajeel leant down and pressed their lips together in a passionate kiss that was perhaps too deep for the situation. But with the constant PDA from Gray and Bickslow, the love/hate flirting from Elfman and Evergreen, and whatever the hell Loke and Laxus had between them, Freed felt he was allowed to kiss his boyfriend how he pleased.
"I should say," Freed murmured into Gajeel's ear as he pulled away. "I find musicians very sexy."
"Y' do, huh?" Gajeel grinned, voice a little husky.
"And if a musician were to dedicate a song to me, I could be persuaded to let him do anything at all to me," Freed continued, voice a sexy tease which he hopes would go right down Gajeel's spine. "Including, perhaps allowing him to bind me to my bed with the manicals that he thinks I don't know are hidden in the spare room," Gajeel's breath hitched. "I might let him keep me there all night, even. Though, I suppose, once I was bound, he'd be in complete control of me, so I'd have to do as instructed no matter what."
"Fuck yeah you would," Gajeel growled a little, and Freed smirked.
Once Freed had been recovered enough, the two men had restarted their sex life. Freed was happy both topping and bottoming, but Gajeel had shown himself to enjoy taking the top roll with sadistic glee. Freed had been happy to accommodate, and he'd been beaten and bruised by the man night after night.
"Something to consider before you start," Freed grinned, pulling away from Gajeel's ear to lean back in his seat.
Gajeel walked to the guildhall's stage with purpose, hefting his new guitar and plugging it into the amplifier. It seemed like everyone but Freed was unhappy with this turn of events, but neither man cared. This was for them, and they were going to enjoy themselves.
"I'm gonna dedicate this to my Prince, the hottest motherfucker in this guild," He looked towards Freed with an evil grin. "And this is a warnin' baby. You better be dancin' now, 'cause yer gonna be too fuckin sore to do it tomorrow."
Freed laughed, raised a glass to toast the sentiment, and sat back to watch his boyfriend perform.
ââ
Nine Months Later
Gajeel woke up with Freed wrapped up in his arms, and he still smiled at the sight of the sleeping man despite how much he'd seen it.
One year. He'd spent one year with Freed, and enjoyed every damn day of it.
Even if the start had been rocky, both with how they first felt anger towards each other as well as the difficulties Freed was facing with his leg, Gajeel wouldn't have changed a single day. Without their arguments on that first week, then Gajeel couldn't be sure that their passion would have turned into something more beautiful and more important than Gajeel would have ever predicted. And while he would give anything for Freed not to have had to face the demon and all the consequences of its possession, Gajeel was so proud of Freed for fighting through it all and was so glad he could be there to help him.
Now, Freed was a lot better. He was stronger on his feet and his cane was rarely needed, even if he always kept it with him. He could go on missions, both with Gajeel and with his team. While they weren't as action-filled as his previous missions, Freed was relearning his craft and creating a new fighting style that could accommodate his needs.
He was a fucking badass, and Gajeel loved him so much.
Life had changed for Gajeel too. Months prior, his contract in the shitty apartment had ended and Freed had invited him to move in with him. Now, every morning he got to wake up with Freed in their shared bed, in their shared home, in their shared lives.
Life was good.
With careful movements, he pressed his lips against Freed's to coax him awake. One thing that hadn't changed was Freed's adorable habit of sleeping in as late as he could, and normally Gajeel would be happy to accommodate. But today was their anniversary and he wanted to spend as much time as he could with his boyfriend. The afternoon and the evening were all planned by Freed, but Gajeel had a few ways of making the morning more fun.
"Wake up, baby," He murmured. "I got a surprise for ya."
Freed, as he always did when he was woken up before he wanted, blinked a few times and pushed his face into Gajeel's chest as if in protest to waking up. Gajeel chuckled, stroked his hand through Freed's hair, and gently pulled the man out from his chest. Freed was sleep worn and tired, but still smiled up at Gajeel.
"Morning," He greeted through a yawn.
"G' mornin'," Gajeel said with a grin. "Y' better not be tired all day. I've got plans for ya."
"Oh have you," Freed grinned lazily, hand resting on Gajeel. "Do tell."
"Not like that, y' horny fucker," Gajeel grinned. Of course, part of the day would be dedicated to screwing Freed senseless, but just not now. "Put on a robe or somethin', I'm gonna make ya breakfast."
Freed raised an eyebrow, but did as instructed and slowly removed himself from the bed. Once out from under the covers, Gajeel saw the man in his naked glory and smirked. Over the year, Freed had shown an interest in getting more piercings, and Gajeel had happily obliged. He had rings decorating his other ear, a stud on his nose, and a single barbell at the base of his cock. That was Gajeel's favourite. Day by day, he was turning his prince more punk.
In response, Gajeel had gotten himself some new tattoos in the shape of Freed's runes. They hadn't figured out how to implant actual runes, but the tattoos looked just the same. He now had the runic word for Dragon on his left arm, and he looked fucking kickass.
"When you said you were going to make breakfast, I hope you meant food," Freed teased gently. "Because at the moment, you look ready to eat me."
"Later, Prince," Gajeel promised, wrapping an arm around Freed.
They walked to the kitchen, and Freed sat at the table while Gajeel got to cooking. Freed mainly cooked for them both as he was better, but Gajeel was by no means bad when tasked with a meal. He also knew each and every one of Freed's guilty pleasure meals, and as such had decided to cook them both pancakes and bacon for their breakfast. They would need the energy for the rest of the day. No doubt Freed had something good planned, and then of course there was the double date dinner with Gray and Bickslow.
Apparently, according to Bickslow, they shared an anniversary, and as such had to celebrate together.
"Y' see that box on the table," Gajeel spoke over his shoulder. "Got you a present. Open it."
"I thought we agreed not to," Freed said, picking up the box.
"Yeah, I know. I had this already and thought it would be good for ya," Gajeel smiled to himself as he whisked the mixture. He heard paper ruffling behind him, and grinned when he heard Freed laugh. "Put it on. Every prince needs one, after all."
It was the wooden crown that he had carved when worrying about Freed in the forest. Once he had been sure Freed was okay, he had gone back to the forest and found where he'd left the carving. He had promised himself that, if he and Freed made it a year as a couple, he would give it to the man. By the amused expression on Freed's face, he had made the right choice.
Freed placed the crown on his head, rolling his eyes a little but smiling. Gajeel grinned and sauntered over to him. He pressed their lips together, grinning.
"Never thought I'd kiss a real prince," He teased. "Ain't I lucky."
"Not as lucky as me, I fear," Freed teased, running a hand up Gajeel's arms. When his fingers traced his runes, he stopped and smiled. "I never did tell you what this meant, did I? I suppose I was embarrassed. Would you like to know?"
"Yeah!" Gajeel exclaimed. He had always been curious.
"It means 'ownership'," Freed chuckled, and Gajeel's inner dragon leapt with joy. "It seems my magic has claimed you, Gajeel."
Gajeel grinned, wrapped Freed in his arms and kissed the hell out of him.
Yeah, life was pretty fucking good.

Gimme Love, 8/9 (Miz Cracker/Blair St Clair) - Grinder
AN: Oof! After this part, we have one more chapter. Things start to look a little bit better for Brie in this part of the story. Not completely, but she's getting there. Enjoy!
TW for this chapter: mental health mentions
2020
A week later, still no change on the Ed Sheeran thing. Launch day was just around the corner, and my nerves were wrecked. And Jujubee still hadn't spoken a word to me.
It was only morning time, and I hadn't even been awake for 5 minutes. Already so many things were playing in my mind.
I still hadn't reinstalled Messenger. So I had no idea whether Blair had replied or not. I really wanted to just forget about her already, but it was slow. I probably should have applied for counselling sessions with HR. I hired a lady a few years prior named Dela, and apparently, she was brilliant.
But therapy could wait until after the launch.
I had seen Jujubee at work a few more times, either making eye contact and looking away just as quick or trying to say hello at least. She'd just brush by.
I tried texting her but never received a reply. As much as she had pissed me off, I missed her. A lot.
"Hey, this is Jujubee. Leave a message."
Beep.
"Hey, Juju, it's me." I paused, struggling to figure out where to go from there, "Look, I...I know things are bad between you and me. But I...I don't want to lose you."
I couldn't think of what else to say.
'Please, talk to me?'
'You mean a lot to me.'
My silence was going on too long. "I...hope to see you at the prelaunch party...OK. Bye"
I hung up, burying my face in my pillow, feeling very pathetic. And because I was impatient, I thought to try reinstalling Messenger and try there.
Or was that too much? And did I really want to risk seeing a reply from a certain someone?
...Fuck it, I was doing it. I'd just ignore her. Yeah, I'd do that.
Blair: Wow. I didn't thinkâŠ
I never clicked a message quicker. I sat up with my back against the headboard, eyes already reading the message.
Blair: Wow. I didn't think you'd actually reply! For sure, girl, we need to hang out! I'm in New York for two weeks anyway. Perfect timing, right? Give me a call as soon as you get this. TTYL.
"Oh my God." I let the phone slip into my lap. How was this real? How the fuck hadn't she found that message creepy? Were things starting to look up? I couldn't just leave her on read. It was sent last week, meaning she was still in New York.
Good. This was good.
But still, why didn't she address the confession to my feelings? Why was she avoiding the subject?
Sorry, you have to hear my innermost thoughts, all these questions. It just goes to show the whirlwind my head was experiencing.
Make a move, Brie.
My thumb hovered over the phone icon in the upper right corner. Do I just...do it?
Yes.
I clicked the button. It rang for a few seconds, the nerves telling me to just give up.
"Hello?"
Why the fuck do the people on the other end always say 'hello' like they didn't see who is calling them?
Why was I even thinking that?? Focus, Brie.
"Hi," I said.
"Wow, I didn't think you'd call." She sounded surprised.
"I'm sorry I keep doing this," I said too quickly. "Anyway, yes. Let's hang out."
There was a moment of silence, and I realised how panicked I sounded.
"Brianna, are you OK?" I heard the concern.
"What? Yeah! Of course, I am." I cleared my throat, "Just a bit...stressed out. Trying to...deal with this launch thingie and...deal with Ed Sheeran, I don't know," I laughed nervously before almost slapping some sense into myself, "I'm not majorly stressed out, though. I can still hang out."
She laughed. And fuck I realised just how much I missed it.
"You always made me laugh. You wanna grab a coffee?"
"Yeah, sure."
"Great! When are you free? I would say today, but I'm stuck with this thingieâŠ" She replied.
And a thought hit me. "Actually... there's gonna be a party for my thing. It's for that project I told you about...back on Prom night, I don't know if you remember."
"Of course I do, Brie. I've been following all the media coverage. It's pretty awesome."
"You have been?" I sounded a little too excited and then reminded myself to not sound too desperate, "I mean, that's pretty cool. But yeah, there's a party the night before the launch. I could add you to the list."
"Yeah, of course! I'd love to come."
"Fantastic. I'll send you the details."
"Well, I'll leave you to it then."
"Thanks."
"I can't wait."
"Me too."
"Bye, Brianna."
"Bye, Blair."
She did the awkward half-spoken "bye, bye, bye," and hung up.
I threw my phone down onto my duvet and puffed out a breath of air.
"Yes!" I punched the air, "Yes. Fucking yes."
Shit was definitely looking up.
I found myself loading up my emails. "Dear Ed Sheeran, I appreciate your enthusiasm about participating in our project. However, after some thinking, we would love for you to perform at the event instead. This is strictly for your safety and the safety of everyone else. Sorry for the inconvenience. Kindest regards, Brianna Caldwell and team."
Sent. Easier than I thought.
No matter what the reply would be, I felt strong. Two problems down in less than ten minutes.
All that was left was Jujubee and Mom.
Fuck...the Mom problem.
It wasn't that I didn't love her. I adored the woman with all my heart. But I was still afraid of that recurring conversation, the memories of how I was a problem child. And if it wasn't that, it was my Grandpa.
Funny how those were always the recurring topics, things I didn't want to address. And now, on top of things, we were going to have to talk about Piggie's health.
I sent her money for his medical bills, so maybe things were different for him.
But still, the other topics of conversation I just wish we could avoidâŠIf only there was something else to talk about...
Wait.
I stared at my phone and instantly became very still.
There was one subject that had gone unaddressed for so long - too long. Oh, God.
Half an hour later, I was in the kitchen, shaky hands pouring a cup of coffee. I couldn't call Mom immediately. I needed to will myself, build up my willpower.
After two cups, I found Mom's name in my phone book, hesitated to hit call but forced myself.
I breathed deeply, taking a seat at the breakfast counter and put the phone to my ear.
Ring...Ring...Ring...RingâŠ
She answered but was silent.
"Mom?" I spoke.
"Hey, honey." She sounded deflated.
"Did you get the money?" That was all I could think of to start with.
"Yeah. It's actually really helped. He's already showing improvement." She paused. "Thanks, baby."
It was painful how thankful she sounded, yet so miserable.
"Mom, I'm gonna come see you," I confirmed.
"Really?"
"Yeah." I smiled upon hearing how she lightened up. "I'm sorry about last week. My phone just...cut off, I guess."
I heard a sniff before she spoke again, "It's OK. When are you coming around?"
"Well, I got the launch this week, so maybe not now. How about 2 weeks?"
"Yeah, that's perfect. I have a job interview to prepare for anyway. I applied to this new boutique that opened in town. My interview is next week."
"That's great!" I was actually excited for her. Things weren't just looking up for me, it seemed. "I'm really happy for you."
"Yeah, me too. I'm not even nervous. Just ready to start working again. Anyway, how about you?"
"Actually, MomâŠ" I paused, squeezing my hand into a tight fist.
"What's wrong, Brianna?" She lowered her tone.
How did she know? I didn't even sound sad. Mothers intuition? Because I always thought that was bullshit. Like, if I was a Mom, I'd be the worst in picking up on things.
"You there?" Mom asked.
"Yeah, I justâŠ" I licked my lips and swallowed. "Mom. Why was I adopted?" I sighed. "Why did they give me up, Mom?"
She was silent for a moment. I could practically feel how she turned cold. "It's time, isn't it?"
I nodded, not that she would see, "Yeah. I...I need to know."
"OK...How about we talk about that when you come here?" She asked.
"No. I...wanna know. I need to know." My voice cracked. "Or I won't be able to move on."
She's silent againâŠjust for a moment. And I felt like I crossed a line.
But she spoke. I hadn't crossed any line.
"OK...Brianna? I just want you to know that I love you, and I always will. No matter what, I'll never stop loving you." Her own voice was cracking now. "When you came into my life, I never realised I could be so happy, how I felt when I met you. You were this...little light that brightened the dark...a reminder that life wasn't so bad. And I promised I'd give you the best life. I'd be the best parent you'd ever have." She paused again. And I knew she was crying. "Brie, it wasn't that your parents didn't want you. I'm sure they knew that they would have been the luckiest parents in the world." She was crying. "Brie. They...they went for a drive one night. And it was raining really bad. And theyâŠ"
She was silent. But I nodded slowly, my eyes just staring at the counter, glassy with tears. "I-I understand."
"I'm sorry, baby." She whimpered. "I should have told you this years ago. I...I didn't know it would affect you for this long. I'm such an idiot."
I held my forehead in my hand. "No. No, Mom. You're not. You had no idea." I sniffed.
"I know. I know. But I just...I...How do you tell a child something like that?"
"Don't worry about that, you idiot. I know now." One of the tears finally slid down my cheek. "I love you, Mom."
"I love you too, Brianna."
I smiled, wiping the tear away. And then a quiet laugh escaped. "OK, I can't lie. I don't wanna leave you like this right now. Let's talk some shit or something."
She laughed in return. "God, you and your potty mouth."

venomous words
on a rainy afternoon in new jersey, the kids didn't have an option to go outside or not since they knew how strict their mother was on days like this and how their father would react if he saw mud tracked into the house. they'd be toast with the chancla.
so ellie played with her barbie dolls on the carpet in the living room floor with a small smile on her face, giovanni sat on the couch and watched over his baby sister while trying to look for something to watch in netflix, specifically a movie. luke and auggie were upstairs in their room playing whatever the newer generation was into. the two boys were in sweats that had crumbs on them since the boys were munching on potato chips as they played their game. their mother had just arrived from long and stressful day at work, she sat in her car for a minute or two to collect herself before entering her home where her babies and husband would be waiting for arrival. well maybe just her babies... once again.
she covered herself with her purple umbrella since it was pouring rain as she got out her car, closed the door and locked it before walking to her front porch that wrapped around the house. she closed her umbrella as soon as she was covered by the porch's roof. she grabbed her house key out of her pocket and opened her door.
"mom's home!"
she hasn't stepped foot into her home and she was already called out by her kids. luke and auggie jumped out their beds and ran downstairs as soon as they heard their older brother yell. ellie dropped her doll and skipped over to her mommy as gio stood up from the couch and walked over to her.
as sara closed the door behind her and turned around, she was attacked by hugs all over her body. from her thighs to her shoulders, her children had her trapped in a loving hug.
after she kissed them each and asked about how their day went, they went back to what they were doing before she came home. later they were expecting a home cooked meal that she always provided for them since mattia rarely cooked for them nowadays and sara didn't like having her kids eating fast food all the time either for their health. at times it was acceptable but if they didn't need to eat it then they wouldn't.
sara was now sitting at the island that was in the kitchen, she opened the bottled water she grabbed from the fridge and took a sip.
"how was work?" her oldest son's voice came from behind her. he walked from behind her to next to her and leaned against the marble island. "stressful. overwhelming. busy. i don't know how i'm gonna do it..." she rubs her temples with a groan. "don't over work yourself, ma. you got this, you always do." gio rubs his moms shoulder softly and flashed her a smile. a smile that made her feel better and made her smile.
"i know it's just that i wanna do as much as i can for this project. i've worked my ass off for years for this to finally happen and i'm so close. only a few more months of ridiculous amount of stress then i'll have my own clothing line." a weak smile formed on her lips, gio's heart swells at the sight. he knows how much his mom has been wanting this but he also knows how much she can overwork herself.
"isn't dad helping you with any of it? he said he would, right?" gio asked with his mother with hope as she took another sip of her water. "uh yeah. he is but there's certain things he can't help with." she gave her son a tight smile laced with lies.
truth is mattia hadn't even talked to sara about her huge project that she has been working on for over a year now. he thinks his wife can do it herself because of how strong she is but little did he know how weak she was getting from handling everything by herself. she was never the one to ask for help but this time she did ask for help from her husband but his answer?
"you're being dramatic"
so she never asked again and instead asked her close friends who were of course open to help with anything she needed. she knew that the kids had brought up the project while they talked to mattia recently either at dinner or something similar. and being the good father mattia is he had to lie because he knew if his kids found out their parents weren't helping each other out then they'd question why and jump to conclusions which leads to arguments and picking "sides".
"oh yeah. i've been helping her with scheduling everything and keeping the tabloids updated. she's not as stress thanks to me."
sara would just simply nod and give a small nod to the kids and glare at mattia who just rolled his eyes at her.
"like what?" gio asked. "it's personal business stuff, g. don't worry about it, okay? i'll be fine. but did your dad take you guys out for breakfast like he said he would?" she changed the subject with a smile.
gio avoided eye contact with her which she automatically meant no.
"h-he just forgot. that's all." he stuttered a bit. sara tried to remain as calm as she could. she didn't want to lash out in front of her baby and took a mental note to talk to mattia tonight about not taking the kids out for breakfast.
"you don't have to lie to me, ya know? i won't get mad at him." she sighed and gave her son a reassuring look. "when i woke up this morning he wasn't here. he sent me a text as well saying that something came up and he had to go meet up with his manager for a gig." he simply explains. "so i made breakfast for us instead and lunch too. he sent us money for post mates but i was just mad-" he stopped himself from venting to his mother about his father.
"i didn't use the money. that's all." he shrugs as sara looks at him with sympathy.
"he promised me that he'd try hard for us. to try being more involved... why would he lie?" gio claps his hands together. "sometimes work gets in the way of things, honey. trust me if he could clear his schedule for a whole week just to be with us he would, okay?" the fact that sara was defending mattia wasn't something she wanted to do.
she had to because she didn't want her son to think bad about his own father, she was trying to protect at least both of them.
after their little conversation sara made dinner while the kids were being entertained by the activities they were doing before she got home. as sara looked over at the clock, she sighed.
it was seven o' clock and mattia still wasn't home. usually he'd send his wife a text saying that he was going to be home late but when sara checked her phone she had no new messages. the kids were now sitting at the table with their mother. she sneaked a quick text to mattia before eating with her babies.
sara: are you on your way yet?
she got no response after she sent it. she called twice and still nothing. she was beyond livid at this point. first, he didn't take the kids out for the day, then he doesn't respond to her text or calls her back? this was the third time this month that this occurred. she didn't show it but she was pissed off at dinner and while she tucked this kids into bed.
"is daddy gonna tuck me in too?" ellie asked as she held onto her stuffed giraffe. "yes, baby. of course. when he gets home i'll tell him to come and give you a kiss, okay?" sara's soft voice said as she placed a strand of hair behind her ear. ellie simply smiled at her mother.
"goodnight, angel. te amo." sara kisses ellie's nose. "buenas noches, mommy. te amo mas." the two giggled. once sara finishes tucking in her kids, she goes to her bathroom to take a shower. she then changed into some house shorts and one of mattia's shirts that fit her like a dress.
she went to the living room and ate ice cream as she watched good girls. without even knowing it, she fell asleep on the couch. she was woken up by someone whispering her name softly and rubbing her cheek gently with their palm.
she opened her eyes to see mattia with a smile. oh how much she wanted to wipe that stupid smile off his stupid face.
"did you make dinner?" he questions her. "yeah. we ate already so i put your plate in the fridge. now if you excuse me i'm going to bed." she was too tired to deal with him right now. she would have to be up bright and early tomorrow for meetings and such so she just didn't want to argue with her husband right now.
she got up from the couch and tried walking away but mattia reached out for her hand to stop her.
"you guys didn't wait for me? what happened to family dinners?" he asks with a pout as he held her hand. she quickly glanced at the clock on the wall for a time check.
2:34 a.m.
"i was not gonna wait till now to eat with you and neither were the kids, mattia. family dinners means that everyone has to be here at reasonable times." she sighs and glares at him. "where were you anyways, mattia? it's past midnight and you barely got home." she questions quickly and changed the subject.
"i was out. it's not a big deal, babe." he scoffs at her.
"not a big deal? if it's not a big deal then why can't you tell me where you were?" she remarked quickly and crossed her arms over her chest.
mattia gives her a look, as if she was crazy or something. all she wanted to know was where he was at, what was so hard about that?
he started walking to the kitchen, sara quickly followed him.
"sara, i've had a long day. please don't start with me right now..." he huffs as he opens the fridge and grabs his plate of cold food. "says the guy who comes home late smelling like alcohol and cigarettes." she looks at him from across the island.
"i didn't do shit! all i did was go to a bar with alejandro and alvaro after i finished my meetings. they drank but i didn't because i knew you'd react like this and treat me like some kid!" he was getting frustrated with her at this point, he showed it by banging his fist on the island. his breath reeked of alcohol so she was even more pissed off that he was lying to her about drinking.
"all i wanted to do was come home to my wife and kids. a nice home cooked meal and after the kids go to bed and we all settle down, maybe some good sex with my wife but i can't have that can't i? ever since you've gotten this attitude all you ever do is complain! you're on bitch mood twenty four seven, sara!" he was now raising his voice at her.
sara had no energy to argue with him right now. literally nothing left. she had a long day, she just wanted to sleep. she looked at him with tired eyes, she scanned his facial expression and saw the anger he always had all of a sudden now. right now she ignored it and walked away, but he didn't let her.
"where the fuck are you going?" he turned her around a little bit too rough. "to bed, mattia! i'm too tired to deal with your bullshit right now." she stated as she tried not to yell at him.
"whatever. go ahead, walk away. that's all you're good at since you can't do anything right. you definitely can't be a good wife." his words felt like knives. she felt like her heart was getting stabbed completely, over and over again.
she walked off, pretending that what he just said didn't phase her and went upstairs quietly so she wouldn't wake the kids.
little did she know, gio was hiding behind a pillar near the stairs where he heard everything.
she went to the room which she shared with her "husband" and jumped into bed. she laid in bed for a minute, thinking about what mattia said. his words repeating in her head like that one song that could never get out of your head.
"you definitely can't be a good wife."
those venomous words scared her pretty much. she couldn't believe he said that... why would he say that? was she really not a good wife? what was she doing that made her so horrible to him? was it the kisses? was it her cooking? was it her looks? was it the sex? the constant need of having him around? what was it?
whatever it was made her feel like she wasn't good enough which was not the case.
sara was always good enough.
she cried herself to sleep that night. and hours later she felt his presence next to her body, his arms wrapped around her keeping her warm but it didn't make her feel loved like it usually did. no, she had a different feeling. she felt like she was in bed with a stranger. why was she feeling this way? shouldn't she be happy that he was still willing to sleep in the same bed with her?
all the questions she thought of made her feel more insecure, not about herself but about her marriage with the man she loved so much. the last thing she wanted was to lose him, it would ruin her.
she hopes for an apology of some sort. perhaps a date to make it up, she'd be willing to forgive him. she knows he lied about not drinking, mattia could never say no to not have a beer or three with the boys. he wasn't thinking straight, she knows her husband too well.
he just didn't want to admit that he was drinking because he didn't want to feel more guilt than he was already feeling since he missed out on dinner.
so the next morning she was woken up by the smell of pancakes and bacon. she went downstairs and saw gio and mattia cooking at the stove, auggie and ellie coloring on the table while luke looked sleep deprived as he walked into the kitchen with his mom.
"morning, amor." mattia walks over to her holding a plate of stacked pancakes with all the works. he bends down a bit to kiss her oh so sweetly, they both smile into the kiss. "i handled everything you needed to do today so we can all spend quality family time and to start off the day i thought of making breakfast." he hands her the plate where she takes it and sits at the table. once everyone is served the all began to eat.
"you have to cook more, pop. these smack!" auggie speaks as he licks his lips. "maybe i will." mattia laughs as he looks over at his son. "how'd you sleep, ma?" gio asked simply. the way he asked her sounded like he knew something (which he did since he heard what his father told his mom last night) but no one thought too much of it.
"good, baby." she lied with a smile. gio could tell that she was lying but he wasn't going to confront her about eavesdropping on her and mattia.
they all ate breakfast in peace and with joy. gio couldn't stop looking at his mom and dad. especially, his mom since she seemed so happy. didn't mattia's drunk words hurt her? was she really pretending that nothing happened between her and her husband? he couldn't believe she was still protecting mattia after what he told her.
"what's up with you?" luke nudges his older brother's elbow slightly. "what?" was gio's response. "you keep on staring at mom. i get that she's beautiful but it's starting to look weird now. quit it." luke let out a dry chuckle after he spoke.
gio just rolled his eyes and finished his breakfast. once the family finished eating they were told to get ready for a day out. mattia said that he'd be taking them out to the carnival since it happened to be in town.
"hey, can we talk?" mattia closed the door behind him as he walked into his bedroom. sara was sitting at her vanity deciding what necklace to wear that she had in her jewelry box.
"yeah, what's up?" she nods and turns her body to face him. he sits in the edge of their bed as she sat across from him in her spinning stool.
"first off, i want to apologize for last night. i know i should've gave you a heads up about dinner and coming home late. yes, i did drink and i didn't mean any of what i said. i was drunk and stupid. i'm sorry, mamas." he gave a look filled with guilt and he really didn't mean those things that he told her last night.
"tia... i accept your apology, okay? you just had me worried because you weren't texting or calling me back. and i just had a stressful day overall yesterday." she sighed. "i know, baby. you shouldn't be overworking yourself either. i also took the liberty of organizing all of your meetings and handling the little things for your project. i know you've wanted this for the longest time and i hate to see you so worrisome about the little things, babe. i wanted to help you." he explains which made her heart feel a certain way. only he was able to give her that feeling as crazy as it sounds.
"i really do have the best husband in the world, huh?" she giggles. "and i have the best wife ever. being all sexy and shit." he winks at her which makes her blush.
"come give me a kiss." he adds and she obeys. she gets up from her chair and straddles mattia's lap, wrapping her arms around his neck and plays with his hair. she dips her head down, he catches her lips with his own. the kiss was soft and sweet, all of their worries seemed to wash away. almost as if all their problems went away as well... boy were they in for it.

It's a bad life if you don't weaken, pt 6 (Tallahassee/Reader)
(Please consider reblogging if you like the fic!)
Tallahassee would never bother with a ânice merlotâ as long as there was stronger stuff for him to grab, his logic being that percentage won out over flavor every time and that drinking wine, especially named wine, was âfucking gayâ. (Everyone had given up on trying to check his casual homophobia, but at least heâd traded some of his stronger terms for well... words that werenât slurs.)
So what you got, after a lot of sulking, was neat rum in served up in clean glasses and cups, none of which matched the other. Tallahassee shook his head at you when you poured the left-over juice from the canned pineapple into yours and Little Rocks drinks, then groaned with disappointment when Columbus shrugged and followed suit.
Little Rock cheered to adulthood and immediately downed her drink. Because of your stunt with the juice, she wouldnât be able to tell that it was practically a mocktail.
You stole both Tallahasseeâs and Columbusâ line by cheering to alcohol and knocked back what you hoped would be the first glass of many. Tallahassee didnât stop you from reaching for the bottle.
Columbus cheered to life, instantly embarrassing everyone before he clarified that he was being sarcastic.
Tallahassee cheered to tits and guns and freedom. Things deteriorated after that.
Columbus was waiting for you in the hallway with the mop when you left Little Rockâs room. You shut her door as quietly as you could and looked up at him.
âIs she... going to be okay?â Columbus leaned the mop against the wall and smoothed back his hair. You prayed heâd actually used it and not brought it up for you as a hint.
âOh yeah. She got it all up and out and I helped her clean herself up. Sheâll be right as rain after a nightâs sleep.â
Little Rock hadnât had a bad first go at being drunk. She hadnât embarrassed herself any worse than hitting Columbus in the nose and admitting to you, in between vomiting, that sheâd made out with Michael once behind the bleachers so heâd teach her how to hot wire a car. Sheâd just assumed you knew who Michael was. Or who Michael had been.
Columbus still looked a little worried and his nose still looked swollen, but he tried to smile. âIt was so nice of you to take care of her like that. Youâd make a really good mom.â
â...what?â
âNo, I mean, you... youâre just... good, you know? Nice. A nice person.â
You could see he wanted the floor to open up and swallow him but you were too tired to help him untangle this one. Columbus shut his eyes tight. Eventually you relented.
âRight. Thank you. Thankfully weâll never have to find out about the âmomâ part.â
He laughed and nodded and youâd never seen anyone make it look less natural.
The tension out here was as thick as glue, worse than could be expected after only a weirdly put compliment, and it worried you because hardly any of this tension was radiating from you.
Columbus was... there was no nicer way to put it, he was getting weirder. Youâd avoided speculation and this was not when you wanted to go there - you were still buzzed, everyone had had a chance to unwind (all over the stairs in Little Rockâs case) and while youâd counted on having to help the actual child, you absolutely did not want to babysit anybody else. Or their... feelings.
âWell, um. It was still really nice of you and I was just thinking that maybe you could use some a-... some time to relax, too. I got an old tape player working in the rec room, it just needed new batteries.â
Oh, you could picture it alright, more terrible cocktails, tinny top 40 music from back when cassettes were still a thing and Columbus trying to make out with you against a fuss-ball table. You shuddered and pulled your hoodie tighter around you to pretend it was the draft that was bothering you. He wasnât a bad guy, he just didnât know what he was doing, or that you wouldnât be willing to teach him. God help him if he found out your real preference... heâd have to accept that when you got quiet and stared out the car window, you werenât, as heâd apparently assumed, wishing for a life of peace and safety, obscure indie rock and rearing apple-cheeked children but instead daydreaming about crawling into the front seat and choking on Tallahasseeâs dick while he was still driving.
Youâd been wrong. No attention at all would be better than this. You missed being ignored by Tallahassee.
âThat... that sounds so nice, Columbus, but Iâm completely wrecked. Can we take a rain check?â
Columbus beamed as if thatâs just the words heâd hoped to hear. Youâd been too nice, youâd made your negative much too ambiguous.
âRain check, yeah, of course! The rec room isnât going anywhere. Did you check it out yet? Itâs pretty cool, totally retro.â
âI bet it is.â You sighed and rubbed your forehead to sell the excuse. Actually, speak of the devil - now you were really developing a headache. âSeems a shame to let the cocktails go to waste though. Mind if I steal one as a nightcap?â
âOf course not, I made them for you. Iâll bring one up for you.â
You had to squeeze past him to get to your bedroom and you heard him draw in a sharp breath. God damn it. You shut your door behind you, leaned on it and nearly slid to the floor, then pulled yourself together. The door opened inwards so you wedged a chair under the handle and sat down on the bed.
Something was different and you looked around, eager for anything else to think about. It took you a few seconds, then you brushed your hand across the bed again and realised it was made, not rumpled like youâd left it, and the sheets were different.
At first you felt sick. You didnât want to have to elevate Columbus from misguided softie to genuine creep... but heâd been outside, and then with Little Rock in the kitchen all afternoon and evening. Tallahassee had been the only one upstairs.
You pulled the blanket back and leaned down to sniff the sheets. They were clean, a little musty from disuse... and then you caught a whiff of Tallahasseeâs cologne.
Heâd made your bed. It made you flush hot, even though you remembered that Little Rockâs bed had been surprisingly fresh, too and knew heâd probably just done over all of them to keep his hands busy.
Still. The sheets smelled a little like him and you quickly pulled the pillow over that spot, lest it faded into the night before Columbusâ return. You should not have asked him to fetch you that drink....
The door rattled and you got back up, got the chair out of the way and exited into the hallway. Columbus hadnât even knocked. You smiled at him awkwardly and then pretended you only just now realised that blocking the door against him was a little odd. âI canât go to sleep these days unless I know no one can get in...â
âOh yeah, that makes sense.â
You took the glass from his hand and left it on a table just inside your room. Columbus wasnât leaving.
âThank you, Columbus. That was really nice of you.â
âYou know youâre safe, right? Me and Tallahassee, weâll make sure weâre all safe.â
âNever hurts to be a little paranoid.â
He tried to laugh that off, and you looked down at your hands.
âWell... Goodnight, alright?â Take the hint. Please, take the hint. He was still there. âIâll see you tomorrow.â
âOf course.â
Columbus leaned out, gave two awkward finger guns and you couldnât help laughing even if you were uncomfortable. That was a mistake, because Columbus must have read somewhere that women go for men that make them laugh and he leaned in with one hand on the wall next to your ear and kissed you.
Youâd never expected him to just go for it like that... and his other hand was actually on your arm, making it difficult for you to slip away. His breath tasted like pure alcohol. Heâd never been a big drinker. You werenât sober yourself so your reaction time left something to be desired; finally, and it felt like itâd taken an age, you overcame your surprise and pushed him gently but firmly away from you.
âColumbus...â You kept your voice at a whisper because the last thing you wanted was to embarrass him any more than you had to.
âI... that was wrong. Right? I misread you.â
âYeah. You did.â
He nodded, quickly, head bobbing up and down as if that could dislodge his blush. âIt was too soon. I get it. Iâm sorry.â
You drew a deep breath. You really hadnât wanted to have to do this, but now the situation had become too dire for hints. âColumbus, Iâm sorry, but it has nothing to do with time. I just donât think of you that way. And Iâm never going to.â
He stared at you. First he looked confused, then almost angry, then lost. â...Why? I mean, why not?â
âCome on, you donât really want me to answer that.â
âOh.â He stepped back further and smiled, stiff and proud and this time definitely a little pissed off. âNo, I get it. Iâm just a skinny nerd, what would you want with me? You should hold out for Mr. Perfect, Iâm sure heâs right around the corner.â
As if your taste wasnât a good enough reason... you drew yourself up a little too. He wouldnât force you to apologise again, or to give him an explanation that heâd like better. He was drunk and disappointed, sure, but that would only excuse him for so long. âYouâre too good a person to want someone whoâs just settling for you, or someone whoâs with you out of pity.â
âGood guy, thatâs me.â
âDonât start.â
Columbus sucked in a deep breath through his nose and when he exhaled it, his anger left with it. âYouâre right. That was a shitty thing to say, Iâm sorry.â He rubbed his eyes and added. âIâm so drunk, still... as it turns out, rum is strong stuff.â
But heâd used up all your patience by now so you just nodded and moved back towards your door. âThen go sleep it off. Iâll forget this ever happened as long as you take me at my word and donât try anything like that again.â
This time, you did slide to the floor when you got back into your room. You sat there for a long time with your arms around your knees and you didnât cry.
---
Well, it had happened. Itâd finally happened.
The two of you had been much too busy to hear him step out onto the landing, and if youâd heard him go back into his room or shut his door and realised youâd had an audience, it wasnât his problem.
Tallahassee stared at the bottle in his hand. For a moment he meant to chuck it at the wall, but someone would be bound to come running to chew him out for causing noise. And it was still half full. Itâd be a shame to waste it.
He wouldâve punched a pillow instead, but thatâd never done any good for anybody. He stalked to the window and looked down at the abandoned car - maybe the keys were still in the ignition. He hadnât had time to unpack his own stuff yet, he could just grab his bag and bail, let these idiots fend for themselves and see how they liked it.
But no, he couldnât do that, not to Little Rock. That boy must have some well hidden talent for manipulation because heâd known just what to say to make Tallahassee start to think of her almost as if she was his own daughter. And now heâd gotten under your skin, too.
Tallahassee had spun on his heels the instant he saw you two locking lips and he couldnât get the image of it out of his mind. God fucking damn it, his own room was right next yours. Any minute now heâd have to listen to the headboard bouncing off the wall and the two of you doing your best to keep quiet.
Only light at the end of the tunnel was that there was absolutely no way itâd last long. He snorted. Columbus might as well have âadult virginâ tattooed across his forehead and Tallahassee would eat his own hat if that pipsqueak lasted more than a minute.
That wasnât much of a positive. Because itâd still mean someone other than Tallahassee was fucking you, holding you... finishing in you. Maybe if the kid was bad enough at it, youâd tire of him eventually. Want something real. Someone whoâd know what to do with you...
God, that was a real low thought. Tallahassee took a deep drink, ran his fingers over his face and groaned. Definitely starting to lose it, the old him would never have gotten this twisted up over a woman. Maybe he should take that car for a joyride, find some zombies to cut down and -
Someone knocked on his door. Oh, great.
âNowâs really not the time,â he growled. There was a creak as whoever it was shifted their weight from one foot to the other. Then your voice, soft and quiet, replied with a âplease.â
You looked as if you were about to cry. Or like you were pissed off, it was hard to tell sometimes. Tallahassee stared down at you, completely non-plussed, then leaned out of the doorway but there was no one else on the landing. âUh... yeah. Fine.â
You slipped past him barefoot and he, very gently, closed the door and gestured to the bed, the only piece of furniture in here for you to sit on. As it happened, he gestured with the hand still holding the bottle. Oh well. The floor probably could do with being disinfected. He watched you impassively as you padded over and sat down with a shiver, then held the bottle out to you. You took it, drank, made a face and then settled back down to looking tired and miserable.
âI leave you people alone for five minutes and this is what happens, huh?â
If youâd been a friend or a lover, hell, even a kid, Tallahassee would have known what to do. Heâd stroke your chin and lift it up so you would look at him and then heâd pull you close, let you give him your weight and keep still and gentle while you cried or talked out your worries. But you were none of those things. The only thing he could offer without crossing any boundaries was words. Of course, he wasnât comfortable with that kind of talk and you didnât really look ready to spill your guts unprovoked.
âCome on,â he managed at last. âRomeo couldnât have been that bad, could he?â

Helena's POV
âThatâs not even rightâ I snapped at my brother snacking his hands to his side. âYouâre supposed to be pissed, theyâre supposed to be your back up,â
âWeâre a team, Helena!â
âYeah, but theyâre following you into war, theyâre backing you up,â
âUgh!â Chester grumbled crossing his arms again.
âUgh to you too,â
âI regret even suggesting you for this role,â Iâd been helping out Linkin Park or as long as I could remember, like before I was even of age!
âYou say that with every thing we need to shoot something.â I laughed. âYou need to chillâ
âChill?â he snapped getting in my face, his eyes glaring straight through me. âAre you fuc-â
âChesââ I laughed, he was always so easy to get fired up.
âChester,â Mike grumbled. âTake a walk,â he rubbed my brother's shoulder and turned him in the opposite direction of me. âSeriously, Helenaâ Mike glared at me. âWhy do you constantly need to set him off, huh?â A small smirk grew on my face, Mike grew one to match as he grabbed my arm pulling me into a headlock.
âdon'tâ I laughed
âstop annoying your brother,â
âNo,â I laughed, he tightened his grip, heâd never hurt me, I knew this, how did I know this? He was Mike fucking Shinoda, I swear his biggest fear in the world was hurting me. We went through the usual dance of him trying to get me to let off my brother.
âHel,â
âYou know Iâm right!â I grumbled, Mike sighed then pulled me back up so I was level with him, he searched my eyes for a moment.
âYeah, but you could let him think he is once in a while,â he said softly. I felt a little guilty. âYouâre kinda mean to him.â
âYouâre kinda mean to me,â I laughed letting him hug me tight.
âNo, Iâm not.â he laughed kissing my cheek before pulling back. âItâs not about me right now,â he shook his head. âCompromise with him,â he told, âI know youâre smart enough to do that,â
âWhat ever,â I grumbled walking off in the direction my brother went in finding him leaning up against a pole starring at his feet.
âbro,â I called, he looked up and stood taller
âHelenaâ he grumbled. âWhat you got your stupid hug off Mike now youâre here to apologize,â
âYeah,â I said smugly. âLook,â I sighed walking in front of him. âIâm sorry,â I said looking into his eyes. âI know I do this to you all the time,â I told. He looked at me. âYou make it so easy!â I half laughed.
âYou need to be a professional, Helena,â he growled.
âI know,â I sighed.
âIt's one thing that youâre taking the piss out of your brother, but if you want this to be a serious career, you need to act professional no matter whether itâs me, or if its some stupid pop star,â
âOkay,â I sighed. âitâs as much you as it is me though,â
âHow?â
âWell,â I was stumped for a moment, words werenât my strong suit. âYou never trust my vision,â
âYeah I do,â
âAfter we argue about it every shoot,â
âYeah, but it turns out good,â
âYeah, exactly,â
âYour argument is horrible,â he laughed.
âYeah, but Iâm right,â I snapped, I knew Iâd never been good at arguing. We stared at each other for a couple of moments.
âLook, I do want you to do this,â
âI know,â
âI just want this whole thing to be perfect, and... â
âChes, I knowâ I sighed.
âItâs just youâre my little sister and I don'tâ he shook his head out of frustration. âI donât want to leave you behind, I just want it all to be right,â
âChester,â I whined, there was pain all over his face. I pulled him into my arms hugging him as tight as I could. âIâm right beside you,â I told. âLike I always have been,â I was born just over a year after him, I was my familyâs pity child. Our siblings were all much older than Chester so they had me so he had some one to play with. I never saw the logic, either way, Chester and I were side by side most days in the same type of trouble, I guess it worked? âLook,â I sighed taking on what Mike said about compromise. âI know me baiting you isn't fair,â I told a small smirk on his face as his eyes met mine. âFrom now on if we have major disagreements, we try it both ways and then decide in editing?â
âYeah,â he said softly there was a set of footsteps coming towards us, we both looked over at the same time.
âYâall dead?â Mike asked looking between the two of us.
âNah,â Chester shrugged pushing his hands further in his pocket.
âTook a rain check,â I smiled, Mike nodded knowingly as he stood between us putting an arm around each of our shoulders.
âCome on BB, we gotta get this done and get to the show,â
It was pretty flawless from then on, I did both shots in record time, I wasn't even looking at the out come yet, they guys helped me pack up and we were whisked into the van on the way to the venue. I sat in the corner playing with the settings on my camera, maybe my brother had made a mistake.
âWhatâs up LB?â Mike asked dropping in the seat next to me. I looked up at him and gave a roll of the eyes. âWhat?â
âHow many times do I have to tell you to stop calling me that?â
âWhat?â he laughed. . . âYou are the Little Benningtonâ he grinned. âThe littlest to be exact,â
âThanks for the reminder,â I scoffed.
âSo you all good?â
âYeah, just a million reasons not to do this?â
âThatâs okay,â Mike said softly.
âHow is that okay?â
âBecause you only need one to walk out there tonight,â he said searching my eyes. âYouâre good at this,â
âRight!â I laughed
âIf you weren't good at it, you wouldnât be here,â he told.
âI wouldnât be my brothers' pity hire?â I asked.
âWell, maybe as something else,â he smiled. âBag bitch,â he laughed.
âSeriously?â I shook my head.
âYeah, if you were a pity hire, youâd have some stupid job like bag carrier or shoe shiner,â he pointed out.
âRight,â I rolled my eyes as I dropped my head on the back of the couch.
âItâs okay to feel scared,â he said softly putting his hand at the back of my neck pulling my head to his shoulder. âAs much as I hate it,â he told. âItâs a good thing,â I looked at him. âWe achieve our greatest rewards when weâre outside our comfort zone.â his voice soft as he tucked some hair behind my ear.
I searched his eyes for a moment. I wanted to scream in his face he was such a fucking hypocrite. Instead, I hesitated before wrapping my arms around his waist as tight as I could burying my face into his neck holding him as tight as I could for as long as he would let me.
