#this has never happened before #usually when I get sucked into something there’s at least a Wikipedia page for it but nothing!! #so anyways I will be doing a lot of the legwork to build a fandom from the ground up. wish me luck #and listen to Birds of Empire. it’s an audio drama podcast set in the far future #but less sci-fi and more fantasy almost? #there’s four tribes. all with an animal motif #the birds are the most mysterious/scifi and they live like thousands of feet up in the trees #the rams live in the mountains and they’re engineers #the bears are hunter-gatherers #and the wolves are fierce matriarchal warrior hunters #the world is full of lore and history and human beings #and and #and I’m grabbing onto it like that cartoon bee getting on that tennis ball
Birds of Empire is GREAT
i will say I do think the first episode is quite possibly the weakest, so maybe start with a different one, or if you feel a bit iffy try to give another a chance. but if you’re interested in a sort of tribalistic dystopia “that combines Greek mythology, high fantasy, Chinese folklore, and more”, its gets a big recommend from me. The lore episodes, in particular, are wonderful bits of worldbuilding.
Why does Birds of Empire not have any fan following. Wh

Alright 5x19 let’s DO THIS.
(Warning: This will probably be long.)
WE BEGIN...by visiting Leviathan’s underground speakeasy.
The shot of Lex in the glow of the Kryptonite is great, 15/10 iconic Kryptonian Killer.
But SPEAKING of things that are green and bad...Gemma’s outfit is stage magician meets Mera from Aquaman and WAIT, WAIT, I’m just now remembering that the character in the comics was linked to Atlantis. Is that why they’ve gone with a green motif for her all season?
Probably not. Either way, still gives me knockoff Mera vibes. (*whispers quietly* I don’t like Mera’s outfit either.)
(I’m reading the Wikipedia entry for Gamemnae and did you know: she was exiled from Atlantis for being blonde?)
Anyways!
That’s just a very long-winded way of saying that the costume is kind of a weird choice.
Then we’re back in Kara’s loft and finally, FINALLY...someone tells Lena that there are BIGGER FISH, STOP REMINISCING.
And then the Superfriends arrive on the scene and they are ready to throw down.
Honestly same bro, same.
Also M’GANN IS ON THE TEAM I love it please, SG, please, hire Sharon Leal full-time.
What is the current door-kicking tally--how many front entrances have the Danvers girls destroyed?
“Well the joke’s on Rama Khan and his big dumb gladiator outfit because I already defeated him once.” THIS. IS. WHAT. I. HAVE. BEEN. SAYING.
THE COSTUME IS SILLY AND NOT IN A FUN WAY.
Leviathan just has terrible fashion sense, is basically the theme of this season.
Oh my gosh M’gann being the one to suggest the multiple Karas and the WINK I love her, I love her so much.
PLEASE NOTE: That J’onn was like ‘the skirt is surprisingly comfortable’ but his response to the pants is, ‘they’re gonna chafe.’
J’onn J’onzz, Skirt Supporter.
Then the Alex suit reveal and ooof, ooooof, probably the wonkiest of the scenes, unfortunately. (Can’t decide if I appreciate the effort of the CGI Alex or if it’s simply too uncanny valley.)
Also, put a pin in the Alex suit reveal. We’ll circle back to it.
(Oh wait and also: Kara’s scream and J’onn’s reaction all A+.)
Breaking chronological order here to just touch on the highlights and maybe discuss particular chunks in detail SO...let’s get right toooooooo....
Rooftop scene with Alex and M’Gann! Nice! But also I was like, ‘Alex just...has a bazooka? ...Yeah that tracks.’ And then I remembered that she has the martian weapon...honestly kinda prefer my accidental headcanon that she just owns one.
Then back to Lena and Kara and we’ve come full circle because folks...they figuratively flew to Luthor-Corp...on a bus.
Oh if only that was the actual goal of this entire plot. I would applaud it.
SG writers, always: REAL threats come in groups of THREE.
I actually don’t mind it. They aren’t given a big introduction and amount of screen time, so it’s pretty unobtrusive.
Then we get a Luthor-Corp lab scene AND a good look at Alex’s suit so LET’S CHAT.
Okay first and foremost: not opposed to vigilante Alex! Especially if it means she can work with Kara a bit more directly.
Love the color scheme! Love the hood! Love that the boots are no longer the stealth wedge heel but are just...heels. Good, yes, good! Also love that you can see it’s basically built on top of her DEO suit which totally makes sense, as...I guess Alex is building the suit mentally, not physically, technically, but she’d still be using stuff she’s familiar with to put it together in...her...mind?
I also think the top portion sits better than the DEO suit, which had that awkward...square-ish portion that covered the front of the torso.
But hmmmmmm the eye makeup is...a statement.
Confused as to why they didn’t go with a domino mask...maybe it was an actor comfort thing but HMMMMM not my personal favorite, admittedly. (Also don’t love the lace up look on the front portion but that’s because it’s reminding me of some of the terrible costumes from Arrow.)
And then the hair clip, which. Okay. As someone who has been struggling to find a way to pull back short hair during this time of no haircuts...can’t be mad about it.
In fact, catch me over here, taking notes.
Alright, costume rambling OVER sorry for the tangent but, you know. New super suit, it’s always exciting.
I like that Kara had to deal with not being able to be out fighting the threat! That’s a good bit of character stuff there.
“William went after Eve ALONE?!?!?” “No super hearing!”
“Please, be careful.” “You know me.” “Yeah, exactly, that’s what I’m worried about.” And then a HUG and they’re just the best.
Dunno if I’ve mentioned it yet but I love the effects they use for Gemma’s ‘true form.’ Very cool and creepy.
Does Andrea just...not question Gemma’s evil villain outfit...or...?
Much like Alex’s super suit we’re puttin’ a PIN in the Brainy plot we’ll get there but FIRST...
THE KARA AND LENA CONVERSATION.
Do I think it should’ve come earlier in the season? Yes! Do I care at this point? ...Okay, still yes! But that’s another pinned point I’ll get back to, right now let us just bask in the beauty that is specifically, verbally laying out all the CRAP Lena put Kara through, and Kara making sure Lena understands THAT is what hurt her, not ‘working with Lex.’
“You never understood.” BINGO. “I know I hurt you by waiting so long to tell you my truth but what about all the ways you hurt me?” EXACTLY.
“I made one mistake, one mistake that was only ever meant to protect you and in return, all you did was hurt me in every way imaginable.”
Then Lena finally apologizes. For, you know, the stuff that was actually upsetting Kara. So. We got there. ...Eventually.
Then it’s off to save William and he’s talking down Eve! We love a noble journalist.
Kara cauterizing the bullet wound and William being like ‘DO IT no wait DON’T DO IT’ and Kara’s just like, ‘TOO LATE, IT’S DONE.’
RETURN OF THE POWER RANGERS SUIT NICE.
And theeeeen a lot of scenes that are fine but it’s mostly just legwork to get us to the bigger parts of the episode sooooo we’re jumping to...
Andrea! Pleasantly surprised with her part in the action of this episode. Had that nice moral conflict we saw in the front half of the season. It’s a little crammed in here, at the last minute, but. Still enjoyed seeing it.
A personal quibble on the visuals: I prefer the simple elegance of the season one hope speech, (Just a lone camera, in a rundown radio station XD) but I understand they had to convey ‘scale.’ Still think it’s a little much.
Oh man, totally forgot to mention, loved Nicole’s line read for, “Maybe you should’ve been meaner.” It was GREAT.
So there’s the fight against Rama Khan and his buddies, and Kara’s trying to talk people out of a MMORPG, AND Andrea shows up ready to kill somebody.
The drama! The suspense!
THE SCORE.
I have another quibble with the cutting back and forth on the hope speech and it’s largely to do with perhaps inadvertent implications regarding who has to grow from pain and what pain in particular, but that might just be a ‘me’ thing, reading the scene a particular way, so I’m just gonna move on and say LOVE TO SEE A HOPE SPEECH.
Also:
Supergirl: “I believe in you.”
The VR peeps and us, the audience:
Alright time to talk about BRAINY.
Admittedly haven’t loved double agent Brainy, which felt more like a, ‘let’s add some drama’ move than anything else.
I do still stand by my assessment that Brainy being a few steps behind Lex made sense given his distress re: Nia and the Superfriends.
But also...was a little wild, IMO, that he didn’t have...some way to at least circumnavigate the radiation shield? Or at the very least limit it.
But again. DRAMA.
All that said...wow. Loved the two Brainys at the end, there. Genuinely touching.
“Will you stay with me?” “Till the very end.”
BRAAAAAAAIIIINNNNNNNNY.
How do you make another Luthor reveal work when you ALREADY pulled the, ‘It was Lex all along!’ like, twice before?
You MAKE IT LILLIAN.
Like, dang it, I enjoyed it. How dare you, SG.
But THAT’S IT. NO MORE SECRET LUTHOR REVEALS.
The terminator look and death shriek for Gemma was fittingly creepy very nice.
But also WOW, she never interacted with Kara. I am DISAPPOINTED.
So anyways, that second Lena and Kara conversation!
It was fine. It’s fine. This is fine. It’s...it’s fine.
(Except that it highlights a problem with the way this whole thing was set up and it’s not something unique to SG! It’s a problem I’ve noticed with a lot of redemption arcs--which seem to be all the rage, as of late--and that is a disproportionate amount of bad things done by the one character, and putting off the turn until like, the last possible minute to increase the drama factor and thaaaaat...is not a super satisfying conclusion because it’s a HUGE amount of build up for a relatively small pay off. Like, as Kara is listing the stuff that Lena’s done, it’s kind of a stark reminder that Lena physically and emotionally hurt Kara on purpose which. Is a glaring red flag. That’s the kind of thing that needs to be unpacked, maybe! Given some space!
Which isn’t to say that characters should never be forgiven, or that they need to be excessively punished. It just needs time. So saving the ‘redemption’ part for the very end where the characters NEED TO BE HEROES RIGHT NOW IN ORDER TO HELP OUT it’s...hmmmmmm. Too rushed.)
AND SO, SOME FINAL THOUGHTS ON THIS, THE SEASON FINALE, AND THE SEASON AS A WHOLE:
Wow but I did not like the focus on Lena. Not fun. No thanks.
Which is only made worse by the trashfire that is the SG fandom.
Loved the moments of growth and agency for Kara, though.
Loved the big crossover! It kinda made for a wonky set up of Earth-38 plot vs. Earth Prime plot but honestly anything the writers set up in the front portion of the season was going to be at the very least interrupted, if not completely derailed simply given the nature of what they intended to do with the merging of the earths.
Like give me SG’s approach to handling the front half of the season over Flash’s any day.
Still too many characters! Still too much plot! Still weird pacing issues! XD
Forget it, Jake, it’s Supergirl.
Oh, honorable mention: The handling of Kelly! She was integrated so well into a nice intersection of plot points and characters that when she’s there to hack into the Obsidian stuff in the finale it’s like, ‘well naturally she’d be here.’ EXCELLENT WORK.
William and Andrea win ‘most improved over their intensely unlikable introductions.’
To be clear: I liked this season finale! And the fact that it all came together as well as it did is a testament to the skill of all the folks involved, considering the awful extenuating circumstances.
Though, upon further introspection, I think I really do dislike the CGI Alex. Too far into the uncanny valley, sorry.
IN CONCLUSION: Very, very sad that it’s gonna be a whole year, or possibly longer, before we get new SG content but, glad that the actors will have a little more time off than they usually might, and I’m all for holding off the production as long as possible, in order to keep folks safe.
WHAT are Lex and Lillian up to, like, specifically, and WHAT is Alex’s superhero name??? WILL the folks in charge of the new Superman show remember that it’s a Supergirl spinoff?!??! Find out NEXT YEAR only on SUPERGIRL! (And Superman & Lois!)
EDIT: I used the word ‘quibble’ twice which feels like one time too many, but also it IS a fun word to say. ‘Quibble.’ Ha. XD

Out of curiosity, what made you stop shopping J*hnlock? Or at least, stop hardcore shipping it?
(I’m beginning to feel more social and just got this ask, so might as well answer it, because it’s anon and easy.)
I think the iceberg that sunk my ship was ASiB. It was kind of the combination of Sherlock’s feelings for Irene and John’s constant, vehement denial of being gay, even after the “it’s all fine” thing in the very first episode. I just didn’t feel the ship as much, and I didn’t see the same chemistry overall as Series 1. I read some post-TRF fic, and probably didn’t totally stop reading J*lock fic until about 2013 (when I just stopped reading Sherlock fic altogether for a few years). And I mean, I could even see some moments through shipper goggles in S3, but by then I wasn’t invested enough to look for fic. I have since read a few John-Mary-Sherlock (Johnlockary? I think) fics, and they were good, but not nearly as meaty as I was hoping for.
And of course, Sustain did a lot to convert me to Sherlock x Molly as a pairing (back in ye olden days before these awful ship names, which I will never like or even get used to). Before that, it was something I wanted, but I had a hard time seeing how it would work (with the S1 characters, at least, and in a meaningful, thoughtful way, not just porn one-shots). Don’t forget, we only had three episodes of content to work with for characterization. maybe_amanda and onemillionandnine did the legwork needed to build that bridge for me.
Even now, I’m not opposed to the idea of J*lock, but I don’t bother seeking it out because of how toxic the entire fandom turned (and, while it was mostly one group being awful, I saw a lot of awfulness from all sides, which turned me off to a lot more than just that one ship). And after TFP, I can’t see anything without Molly at least being one leg of a triad. Which I might or might not read (if it exists), because I have complicated feelings about polyamory stemming from my own experiences and those of people I know, so I have a hard time seeing that kind of arrangement as long-term healthy and a happily ever after. I mean, I’d like to read something like that if it were well done, and have given a lot of thought to how I would do it while I was working on Perfect, Not Perfect-Perfect, but nothing ever came of it (shock!).
I still ship the hell out of ACD/ Grenada Holmes and Watson, though. In fact, if anyone has any good recs for non-BBC fic, I’ll take them. I really should have bookmarked/ saved some of my old favorites because I don’t remember titles any more and I think some of the porn has completely disappeared. I remember one that was the origin story and I think it was from Holmes’ POV, and Watson was very blonde; I don’t remember anything else, sadly.
Anyway, yeah. I do still miss the way I felt about the ship and the whole fandom scene from back in 2010/11, but nothing gold can stay. So yeah.
#from an ask#all about my ships#i don't want to tag it j-lock because i don't want it in their tag#sorry

I read your thoughts on the Derek and Scott controversy concerning the latter's supposed tunnel vision, and I totally agree. Derek did NOT handle things well at all during the early days. However, not to excuse any of his actions, because as you pointed out yourself, those were not a good look, but Derek wasn't actually 30-ish. We don't get a definitive age for him, but the pilot has him be 19 and the show confirms him being just a few years older than Scott and Stiles later on. I think 1/2
2/2 Derek was left to pretty much fend for himself (along with Laura) at a really young age and being in constant fear of being killed by hunters, never learned how to properly face his trauma, which unfortunately resulted in him being a total asshole during s1-2. Anyways, there’s so much drama in the TW fandom which is sad, because neither Scott, Derek or Stiles are the villains various parts of fandom make them out to be. They’re all flawed in their own ways, which makes the show interesting.
___________
I’m pretty much chalking up all of this to severely bad writing because there were a lot of plot holes in Teen Wolf (from what I can remember, it’s been a while). Derek and the age discrepancy brings up the discussion of getting people who are the proper age for these roles because there is no way I believe that Tyler Hoechlin was playing a 19-year-old Derek during s1 and S2.
Like, Derek was 1) somehow able to fend for himself (I can’t remember what happened with Cora), 2) somehow bought a (nice) large ass apartment building (I remember the running question/gag was where the hell was he living while also having those expensive clothes + car) and yet is also able to work out all of his issues by himself (and probably with the support of his gf Braeden) by the end of the series is so fantastical that I have a hard time believing it. And this is a show about werewolves (specifically one latino teen wolf, fandom [a whole other can of worms] likes to forget/erase entirely) and the supernatural.
I think one of the reasons why Teen Wolf annoyed me so much is that the audience had to do most of the legwork in trying to figure out what the hell was going on. How Derek managed to do/acquire half the stuff he did in later seasons is still a mystery to me.

Price of a Soul
Words: 4,374
Chapters: 2 of 13
Language: English
Fandoms: Angel the Series
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Some violence
Characters: Faith Lehane, Angel, Cordelia Chase, Spike, Wesley Wyndam-Pryce, Lindsey McDonald, Lilah Morgan
Synopsis: Season 1 of Angel, Faith arrives but with a friend. The team must deal with the fallout of past failures as enemies become allies
Angel had gone to the apartment below to make the call, which was taking quite awhile. At least that’s what Cordelia thought as she was pouring over books that had absolutely no information on a rogue slayer. She raised her head and winced, rubbing at a kink in her neck that was quickly developing. Frowning at the book as though it did it on purpose, she sighed heavily and closed it loudly. With a look around she saw that Wesley didn’t even notice. She leaned with her chin in her hand and tried again, a louder, longer sigh. Still nothing.
Just as she was about to clear her throat Angel stepped back into the office. His steps were slow and his head was down. She perked up and threw a pen at Wes to get his attention.
“Angel? Any news?” she asked carefully.
With no answer and not even a glance in their direction, Cordelia looked to Wes who tried again. Clearing his throat he stood up from the desk. “We, haven’t found much yet, did you have better luck then?”
Angel lifted his head and then sat down heavily in the large chair. “They know. In Sunnydale. Actually, it seems she woke up and went right for Buffy.”
Wesley and Cordelia exchanged a look and both moved from their positions to stand near Angel.
“She’s, all right isn’t she?” Cordelia asked. She knew that in the end, everything they were doing, helping Angel with this path, was to lead him back to her. Angel finally seemed to snap out of whatever he had been thinking and nodded, running a hand over his face.
“The Mayor, had a plan for her. Some device that allowed her to switch bodies with Buffy. When the Council came for Faith and actually grabbed Buffy, in her body, she was able to convince them of the truth. They destroyed the device but she did a lot of damage.”
Cordelia winced, who knew what kind of damage she could do while people thought she was Buffy, and honestly she didn’t want to try an imagine it. Wesley on the other hand was already sweating.
“What, I mean, what did she do? Is everyone, safe?”
Angel leaned forward, his elbows on his thighs and gave a rather sad sort of chuckle, that was worrisome. “Yeah, I mean, she, she got caught rescuing some people in a church. Before that she uh, slept with Buffy’s new boyfriend though.”
Then they understood. Cordelia sat on the edge of the arm of the chair and put a hand on Angel’s back.
“I’m sorry. I, didn’t know she’d started dating.” For the first time, Cordelia was a little lost for words, though she had plenty for Buffy.
Angel sat up again and allowed Cordy lean her head into his. “She’s, moved on. I had to talk her down from coming here to kill Faith. She told me, she told me that she moved on, and that it’s new and good and better. Because she can trust him.”
Cordelia’s eyes narrowed and she sat up, opening her mouth to let loose, but Wesley stopped her with a clear of this throat.
“I, am sorry Angel, but Buffy is young. She is living her life, which is what you both wanted. At this point, I think we should put our energies elsewhere. Like, finding Faith.” His voice was reassuring but with that slight tinge of authority meant to guide. Cordelia could have overridden it with her own diatribe but the phone rang. She glared at Wes almost demanding he answer so she could talk to Angel, but he simply stared her down and she stood up with a grumble. With a growl of frustration Cordelia reached for the phone.
"Angel Investigations we help the – " Her usual bright eyed and big smiling response fell into a look of confusion then a frown. Suddenly both men were interested. Angel stood and Wesley removed his glasses leaning forward. With a lick of her lips, Cordelia held the phone out for Angel. "It's, for you."
Angel looked at the two of them then reached for the phone. "Angel."
Wesley's questioning look was met with her shaking her head, still confused. Most of the conversation was simply Angel humming in assent or nodding. At least the part they heard. Finally he hung up and stared at the phone a moment. Then he went for his coat, the two trailing behind him.
"Well?" Cordelia asked anxiously.
Angel turned back to them as he looked through the weapons. "It was a tip. Wolfram and Hart hired Faith, and set her up in an apartment. I'm going to check it out." His voice had gone monotone. Dark and determined.
Immediately Cordelia went to reach for the small crossbow in the weapons. "Not alone you're not!"
Angel grabbed her arm and stopped her. His face softened a bit as he looked at her and at Wesley. "Yes I am. I'm taking the sewers, this is only a visual. No fighting, and I don't want you two getting hurt. Wes, keep an eye on her, I'll be back soon." He turned and left as Wesley stepped up by Cordelia, who was already crossing her arms over her chest unhappily.
"He is just making sure we are safe."
"Says you! Wes he shouldn't be out there by himself and you know it. Especially after that phone call."
He sighed and nodded. He knew she was right, that they should stick to working as a team, but he was hoping Angel was truly just checking out a tip and not dealing with the issue alone. In truth, he was worried about how dangerous Faith could be.
"Well, I guess we're back to research." He stated with a small smile. With an audible groan Cordelia lowered her arms and let her head fall back onto his chest.
"Fine. You go get all those dusty books and I'm ordering lunch."
*************
Faith had done quite a bit of legwork. She knew the area, she knew Angel’s usual haunts, she also knew where he went for information and who squealed to him more often than not. So getting the information to Angel was a piece of cake and he took it like a kid on a sugar binge. They knew timing was everything and so waited just long enough for Angel to be too far gone to run back for anything and for the other two to get comfortable. They would be in the office and they could easily slip into the building to look for the right moment to pounce.
Meanwhile, Wesley had books set aside for Cordelia, he had found some old records of rogue slayers, and was hoping to find some information on how to deal with them. Other than death that was. There had been a few of course, and the Council typically dealt with them quickly. They had to. Not having an active slayer was bad enough. Having one that did more harm than good set them back. The only reason they hadn't been more intent on Faith was that they still had Buffy. Of course, as Faith was activated after Buffy, killing Faith would just call another slayer. Which complicated matters. What he was finding wasn't good. There had been no attempts at rehabilitation in generations. The ones they had made had failed miserably. Hearing soft footfalls he didn't raise his head, he only raised a hand to gesture behind him.
"Ah there you are, Cordelia would you hand me the Compendium behind you? Thank you."
He heard the book slide from the shelf but as he raised his head, he was blinded by it. His head snapping to the side and smacked into the desk, bouncing off of it. Stars burst behind his eyes and he blinked confused. There was no time to adjust as fingers dug into his scalp, pulled at hair and yanked his head back. Faith grinned down at him. She had not seen Cordelia and so she and Spike had slipped in, going in separate directions as they stalked their prey. Wesley asking for a book had made her shrug, after all, live by the book, die by the book, right?
"Hey there Wes. Long time no see, how's that watcher thing working out for you?"
He opened his mouth to answer and she slammed his head down again. This wasn’t really a discussion. Not as far as she was concerned anyway. "It was rhetorical. You know what rhetorical means right? Like a watcher protecting his slayer? Rhetorical, means, not, doing, shit." Faith bit out.
While the end goal may have been breaking Angel, right now she was concentrating on his team. More importantly, Wesley and she had plenty of hard feelings of her own to work out.
Wesley groaned, he couldn't help it. He felt blood trickle over his left eye and his glasses had broken and laid on the desk in pieces. She leaned to his ear and he shivered. "Call in your friend. She's gonna want to see this." Faith smiled politely.
Wesley knew what she meant. Cordelia, she was grabbing food and wasn’t in the office just yet. So she was safe. As long as he could keep Faith occupied anyway. Shaking his head, hope flared that he could take care of this himself. Worse case, he was going to end up mighty bruised, but he just had to keep her busy until Angel came back. He realized Faith would have some unresolved hostility towards him, but it just truly hadn't occurred to him how much, or how dangerous it was. Unfortunately, there was no way to warn Cordelia, to keep her away and within moments he heard her voice.
"Hey Wes, I hope Chinese is okayyyyyyyy" Cordelia sang out as she rounded the corner to the office. Walking in she froze, eyes had gone wide and quickly she dropped the food and looked for the nearest thing that could possibly be used as a weapon.
Wes coughed and jerked his head from Faith’s hand, Faith immediately jerked his head back to stare at the ceiling, neck stretched back so hard he could barely breathe. "Cordelia, run! Now!" He managed to croak out and panicked when Faith loosened her grip and mimicked him.
"Cordelia, run." She whined at her. Letting go of Wes she stepped behind him, hands at his shoulders, digging in and leaned her face against his. “I dare ya.”
Wes winced, he wasn’t sure what was going on but he didn’t like it. He hoped that she really was letting Cordelia go. Perhaps as a message to Angel. He stared at her and mouthed the words please.
Cordelia was torn. Sure, she could run, no way she could take Faith, but that slayer bitch had Wesley! She could maybe at least distract her right? Grabbing a coffee mug she threw it at Faith’s face and ran for her, but Faith was faster. Stepping aside she knocked Cordelia to the ground with a punch to the gut and then shook her head.
“Wow, I knew you weren’t bright but I didn’t think you were downright stupid. One last chance, run.” She added in a hiss.
With a glance to Wes she pushed herself up to standing. He was swaying in his chair, bleeding from the head. Oh she’d run all right. Right to the weapons. She started backing up and Faith just smiled at her. Probably should have been her first warning. Still once close to the door she spun around to run for the weapons, only to run right into someone’s chest. Hands grabbed her upper arms and pinned her in place, she hoped it was Angel but she already knew it wasn’t. Pulling back, she couldn’t budge, the hands were so strong. Shaken slightly she glanced up, right into Spike’s face.
"Well well, always did have a thing for cheerleaders. Gonna scream for me pet?" He purred at her.
Shivers ran over the back of her neck and she swallowed hard, she wasn’t going to scream for him, but it wasn’t from pride. Spike had turned her around and wrapped an arm around her chest, pinning her arms. A strangled sound came out and her head was yanked to the side. His face was in her neck and she closed her eyes just waiting for fang.
Faith took a knee in front of Wesley and made a kind of ‘tsk tsk’ noise as she pushed the blood from his eyes and held his chin so he was looking at the scene behind her. "So here's the deal, Wes. As long as you don't scream, we'll leave her alone. You scream, you beg, then we'll leave you alone. And start on her. Got it?"
Wes tried to nod, his head was killing him. It felt three times larger than it should be. He looked over at Spike, he hadn't bitten her, not yet. He had to find a way to get them to leave her alone. "Just, leave her here and I'll cooperate It’s me you’re angry at Faith."
Spike licked along Cordelia’s neck, causing her to wince in disgust and try pulling away. He had her head pinned in place and he stared at Wesley and Faith. "What and give up fresh blood? I hear those visions make the blood, tasty."
Cordelia felt the sharp intake of breath before she realized it was hers. Eyes widened slightly and she looked at Wesley, truly afraid. They knew about her visions, they were prepared, she didn’t see how either of them were getting out of this. Her fears were realized when Faith shook her head and pulled Wesley’s chin down to look at her.
"Oh no, you both get to come for the ride. But, wouldn't be very fair for us not to invite your boss right?" With that she got up and pulled out a knife. Grabbing Wesley’s hand she pulled the blade along his palm and Cordelia squeaked. Faith just rolled her eyes and Spike licked his lips. Grabbing an empty mug from the desk she pulled Wesley’s hand over it and made it into a fist, letting the blood fill the bottom of the cup.
Dropping his hand she turned on Spike and Faith, pointing the blade towards Cordelia. Spike shook his head. “Sorry luv, not wastin’ a drop o’ this. Will knock her out for ya though.”
With that he bounced her head off the door frame and picked up her limp body. Faith looked at Wes and with no warning, backhanded him and he went limp.
*************
Angel had decided to sneak through the sewers to the apartment building. Hoping to catch Faith off guard, she was dangerous, most slayers were. The difference was he knew the last time that he’d seen her, she had been mentally unstable as well. Which was an even more dangerous situation. He wanted to believe there was hope for her, had tried before to help her. The thing was, Angel knew that you couldn’t help those that didn’t want your help. You couldn’t save everyone, as much as you might try.
He came up the back of the apartments and took to the fire escape, still in the shadows of the building. He knew it was on the fourth floor and he wasn’t taking any chances that she had the halls and stairs ready for him. As he got up to the right floor he found a window cracked open and went to check it out. It overlooked the hallway, and not an apartment, so carefully he pulled the sash open farther and slipped in. The first thing he noticed was that it was quiet. Too quiet, as if no one had lived in the building for a long while. It was the kind of silence that was stale, letting you now it hadn’t been disturbed. The layer of dust didn’t do much more to make him feel good about the situation.
Pinpricks ran up the back of his neck, it screamed trap and he knew he couldn’t turn back now. He needed answers, he needed to get to Faith before she went too far. 4G, that was the apartment he was told about and it was at the end of the hall. He slowly made his way down to the door and halfway down the hall noticed a note on the door. Every muscle in his body tensed up as he told himself it wasn’t for him. It wasn’t part of a trap. As he got up there his eyes scanned the message and he yanked the paper from the door. The handwriting was too familiar and made the whole situation even more dangerous.
Guess who joined the party? Just like old times, mate. Too bad you're neutered, we could have had a lot of fun. No worries though, your friends will keep the slayer and me company till you're ready to join in. P.S. Never did tell me, what's it like breaking a seer?
He crumpled up the note and ran, diving through the window at the end of the hall and jumping down the four flights to the ground. Hitting hard he rolled with the impact. He had to get back to the office. It had definitely been a trap, it just hadn’t been for him.
The sewers would be fastest, so he ran through, water splashing around his ankles as he took the now familiar route back to his apartment in the basement of the building. Rushing into his own living quarters he didn’t bother with the elevator but took the stairs two at a time to the office. He knew withing feet of the door that he was too late. The smell of blood struck him hard, like a slap to the face.
"Cor! Wes!" He called out, in hopes that one of them were there, that both were still alive. All that greeted him was a deafening silence. His call echoed off the walls as if mocking him. He had been so intent on the trap being for him, that Faith was there for him, that he had truly hoped that by keeping the other two away, they would be safe. Especially if he left them at the office. The office was safe, it was his home, it was their sanctuary, now it had been violated in the worst way.
The familiar smell of Cordy’s perfume and Wesley’s books was all but obliterated by the smell of fear and blood. As soon as he stepped into the office he was looking everywhere, trying to picture what had been done to them. There was broken glass, Wesley’s glasses lay mangled on his desk, books were scattered and blood dripped from the chair onto the floor. He saw the stain of it on his mug and without realizing it, he was reaching for it. The smell of human blood was so much stronger than the stuff he usually drank and when he noticed he was staring at it, his hand shook in anger. This was their blood, he knew it. Cordelia’s or Wesley’s, or worse both.
He threw the mug to the wall and watched it break into a million pieces, blood splattering across the wall. There wasn’t enough blood for them to be dead. So they were taken alive, or better yet had somehow escaped. That brief flare of hope was dashed when he saw the knife stuck into his desk, pinning another note. This one again in Spike’s handwriting, though Faith had left her own mark as well.
I am disappointed. You're making this too easy, Angelus. Don’t worry, they are alive. They will be alive for days, don't forget, I learned from the best.
At the bottom, scrawled in the blood of his friends was the message: TAG YOUR IT.
*************
Wesley woke with a groan and tried to shift, but a cool hand to his head stopped him. He was laying on the floor, that much he knew. Giving his head a moment to stop spinning, he opened his eyes and realized they were in a windowless room, there were chairs to the side but he was on the floor, head in Cordelia's lap as she stroked at his hair. He reached up to stop her hand and looked over her face, eyes drifting to her neck and relief flooding him that he saw no marks.
"Hey." He tried to sound normal but it came out more strangled than he’d like. Still he offered a small smile as well.
"Hey." Cordelia replied, her own face pinched in pain, and tightness around her eyes had him frowning as he moved to sit up. She tried to stop him but he held her hand and turned to sit and face her.
"Cordelia, what is it?" His voice held an equal amount of worry and fear. When she simply shook her head and glanced to the door he turned to look as well. Obviously they were locked in but that wasn’t her only worry. No this was more. Before he could press, she swallowed and looked at him. Reaching with her other hand to his forehead where blood had dried.
"How are you feeling? She, she hit you a lot. In the head."
A slight wince at the reminder and he groaned. She reached for him to steady him and he sighed, giving her hand a squeeze of reassurance. "I'll be fine. You look, hurt. Did they . . . "
She shook her head to reassure him and her eyes lit for a moment in anger. "Oh no, I heard them, they'll leave me alone as long as they get to beat on you. Which, I have to tell you was the stupidest thing you've ever agreed to."
A touch of fire threaded her voice and it gave him a small smile to know she was well enough to still yell at him. Her shoulders slumped a bit and she sighed, squeezing his hand back. "But thanks."
Wesley smiled back but heard the door open and jumped, moving to block her from it if he could. Spike came in and tossed a bottle of pain killers and a bottle of water at Cordelia’s feet. With a smirk he lit a cigarette, "That's one innocent not getting' saved huh? An' the watcher's awake. Time to play."
With that he turned and left, closing the door again, Wesley could hear the bolt slide into place locking them in. Cordelia had reached for the bottle like it was a life line and quickly doled out several pills. Wesley looked confused, she had said they hadn’t hurt her but she was nearly desperate for the pills. That’s when he realized, he turned to her quickly, shock and worry threading his voice.
"Cordelia?"
She finished swallowing the pills and handed him the water, making sure she only took what she needed. She knew what he was asking, but she would rather not talk about it and hoped to distract him. "Here, drink the rest. I don't like whatever they've got planned for you.”
Off of his look she sighed, “ I, I had a vision. While you were out cold. I told them I only have visions of innocents in trouble, for Angel to rescue and they left it alone. They seemed almost, excited about it."
Wes knew it was more serious than that, her eyes refused to meet his. Brushing her hair from her face he looked at her. This wasn’t the pain he was used to seeing after a vision hit, this wasn’t just worry, or even anger that they wouldn’t be able save the person. Whatever it was she wasn’t saying, it pulled like a thread of pure fear through his stomach. There was one possibility and it seemed the most obvious. "Cordelia? No, tell me. Was it, this? Us?"
She shook her head and swallowed. She couldn’t, it was just too much. "No, not, not exactly. I mean, sort of. I saw, Lindsey." She eek-ed out hoping it was enough.
"Makes sense that Wolfram and Hart have a hand in this." Wesley grumbled.
These days there was very little that they weren’t doing to try and cause problems for them. Of course, death, torture, seemed a bit much for their usual tactics. The fact that they were stepping it up was not a good sign. Still, he saw there was more and just waited. She started sniffling, shoulders shaking and he wrapped an arm around her. If she had to see, and worse feel, his torture and death before it happened he would kill Lindsey himself for putting her through it. That, was a kind of torture no one deserved.
"He killed me. I'm going to die Wes, and there's no one there. I die alone." She barely breathed it and he went still. His arms tightened around her. He wasn’t there? She hadn’t seen him, or Spike or Faith. Just Lindsey, and just her, and her death. This was no longer about vengeance of a slayer.
“You’re, you’re sure. I wasn’t, there or Spike or anyone? It was, Lindsey?”
Pulling away slightly she wiped at her face, ashamed of having broken down in the first place. With a nod she took a breath and steadied herself. “I’m sure. You were safe, I don’t know how I know but I do. You were safe and somehow, I wasn’t here, it was someplace else. A lab or something.”
She was so matter of fact about it now that she seemed almost resigned and he refused to give up. Grabbing her shoulders he dipped his head to see her face. Determination fixed his face.
"It won't happen. You know Angel won't let that happen. Neither will I."
She raised her head and her eyes held a sadness and resignation that chilled him to the bone. “I don’t think, you have a choice.”
He opened his mouth to reply but they didn't get a chance to discuss it anymore as the door opened and Spike walked in with a duffel bag and Faith followed, dragging a chair. She rubbed her hands together and smiled.
"Time's up."

Interview with Alex Hirsch from after he had finished Gravity Falls
https://www.themarysue.com/alex-hirsch-interview/
Alex Hirsch: My main goal after Gravity Falls was finished was to take a vacation a BIG one and I spent about a year doing everything I couldn’t do while I was serving solitary confinement at Disney. I visited Hawaii, Japan, Portland, Burning Man. I did conventions in New York, Russia, Rio. My goal was to say “yes” to anything that wasn’t work. Sort of like Grunkle Stan on his worldwide boat tour with Ford, I needed some time away from the shack. But GF is a weirdness magnet after all and I can’t resist its pull forever. When Disney asked if I’d want to do Journal #3 I said yes immediately. It’s the number one thing I’d want to read if I was a fan, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity.
Kaiser: Was the Journal done in stages? i.e. was the original draft for the black light version, or did you have to come back and do that once the sales proved viable?
Hirsch: Definitely stages, the very first thing I asked when they brought up the possibility of doing a journal was whether we could include the black light messages, but we were told that it would be way too expensive and to just try to forget about it. Then when the book came out and was topping the NYT bestseller list, Disney Publishing agreed to release a special edition for the superfans and give me my dream of black lights.
The challenge then was to try to fit the new messages over the old pages as though they always belonged. But these are fun challenges. Probably the hardest part was on the “Floating Eyeballs” page—there’s a spot where you see text coming from under a Polaroid. But in the Special Edition Journal, the polaroid is finally removable, so I needed to think of sentences that would credibly end with the words you’ve already seen
Kaiser: On that subject, Disney never seemed particularly keen on releasing much GF merch. Has the success of Journal 3 re-opened the conversation on things like the BluRay set?
Hirsch: The day that Disney bought Star Wars (AFTER buying Marvel) was the day I knew my merch dreams for Gravity Falls were basically toast. The company is too huge and we’re barely a blip on the radar to their consumer products division. Luckily the enduring popularity of the show has resulted in a few departments within the company sticking their neck out and trying cool experiments like journal 3. Everyone was surprised by the success of the journal except the fans. Their appetite for more continues to impress even this long after the end of the show. I’m hoping those numbers increase our likelihood of getting a DVD but I can’t make any promises.
Kaiser: Were you involved in getting The Mystery of Gravity Falls (@TheMysteryofGF) permission to do what is (according to them) small batches of sanctioned merch like the stone Bill figure and Grunkle Stan bobbleheads?
Hirsch: That guy is like my guardian angel. He’s some kind of brilliant, crazed super-fan who understands the show better than Disney ever did. Honestly, I don’t know how he contacted Disney and got the sanctioned merch—he’s some kind of wizard. I hope he runs the company one day.
[Note: I reached out to @TheMysteryofGF to check on this. Turns out I was slightly incorrect in my question. They have worked in conjunction with Disney on at least one occasion, but for the most part the merchandise they’ve made available has been of their own initiative, sometimes with help from an outside contractor. They also work with Bioworld, who provides the GF license to Hot Topic, in creating certain items.]
Kaiser: How did you approach fan interaction during the series? The codes are obviously built into the show from the get-go, but did you think it would catch on like it did? Did the response require you to adjust planned fan engagement on the fly?
Hirsch: The scope, size, influence and presence of fandom culture has gone through a complete and total revolution between now and when I first pitched Gravity Falls in 2011. Keep in mind- my first job was on Flapjack back in 2008-ish. Back then, you would release a cartoon into the ether, and it would basically disappear into a black void after airing. There’d be maybe two drawings on DeviantArt, maybe a message board with a few comments, and that was it.
That was the entirety of online feedback between cartoons and creators at the time. (And even those paltry scraps of feedback were still huge compared to fandoms when I was growing up. There was nobody in 1991 willing to die to make sure that their ship of Tommy Pickles and Reptar came to fruition. At least no one with a way of getting that opinion in front of Klasky-Csupo)
Tumblr’s rise happened just around the same time as Gravity Falls‘s premiere in 2012, so I was totally unprepared for the level of passion and engagement and fan art that would happen. I had to evolve along with all this in real time as it happened.
Kaiser: I always found it curious that you’d hold Twitter Q&As, but then delete the answers within a day.
Hirsch: Probably the best formats for answering questions were Reddit AMAs—I enjoyed doing two of those—and interviews. I occasionally answer questions on twitter when the mood strikes me, but Twitter is a TERRIBLE place for meaningful discourse.
Twitter has an ephemeral conversational glibness built into its core, but it ironically also has this incentive to cast every word said in bronze and isolate it from its context. It’s like if everything you said at a dinner party with every guest was carved into the wall and permanently became part of the house decorations. I’ll frequently prune my twitter posts to keep my feed clean from the residue of 100 little back and forths. Even if I tried to leave everything up, it disappears into the feed anyway. No matter how many times I say “There is no Season 3” people will never stop asking.
Kaiser: Obviously, that’s got to be a trial and error process. Any regrets?
Hirsch: I honestly don’t have many regrets from my engagement with fans, because everything that happens, positive and negative, is a learning experience and teaches me something about our world and the culture we live in. And overwhelmingly it has been positive. Back in the pre-fandom-culture days I never could have imagined I’d get such an overwhelming tidal wave of creative, kind, validating responses to my work. It’s every creator’s dream. It’s absolutely worth any weird prickly trolls or growing pains that come along with it and I’m insanely grateful.
Kaiser: The Cipher Hunt had to be an enormous undertaking to put together. How’d you go about organizing it? Did you ever take part in any ARGs (Augmented Reality Games) yourself that inspired you?
Kaiser: The Cipher Hunt was the most fun thing I’ve ever done.
I’ve never been part of any real-world treasure hunts, but as someone who grew up with games like MYST I love puzzles; the idea of doing one in the real world was too tempting to pass up.
The entire thing was organized by me and my buddy Ian Worrel, Gravity Falls‘ Emmy-winning art director. I’m a restless idea guy and he’s this master executor/craftsman—we were both totally in love with the idea of using our newfound free time to put something together totally for the fun of it, to build this strange Rube Goldberg Device and then watch how the fans would interact with it in real time.
Kaiser: Did you split up duties as far as where to put what? Who made the statue?
Hirsch: The statue was made by a brilliant props/effects fabricator in LA, Fon Davis of Fonco, a friend of a friend who was willing to make something weird for a price. Ian did most of the intellectual legwork in terms of figuring out which clues would lead to where, and I wrote all the actual codes. We took a road trip up to Oregon together to hide some of the final clues and had a lot of fun.
I hid the clue in Russia personally, which was a little terrifying. I knew if I got caught trying to hide a tiny magnetic capsule with a code scroll rolled up into it, Putin might not take to kindly to the optics of that. But Bill Cipher was smiling down on me that day and it went without a hitch.
Kaiser: Shifting a bit to the series itself: I recall you mentioning that the writing for season 2 had to be somewhat rethought because so many people had figured out the Author’s identity. Did that change how you wrote Ford’s arc? Were there other things you wanted to explore in general, given more time?
Hirsch: The truth is, no matter how many grand plans you have in your head, no matter what tentpole plot points or ideas you imagine, everything changes when you actually sit down to write. You discover what the show is as you make it through collaboration, trial and error, and what feels right.
In your question, you say season 2 had to be “rethought” but that implies that there was this already finished season 2 totally written out in our minds. But that’s not the case. All we knew after Season 1 was over was “Ford comes out of the portal. Bill probably creates the apocalypse. Dipper & Mabel complete their arcs. Fun stuff happens in the meantime.”
Figuring out how it all fits together in the writers’ room, discovering new things and surprising yourself—that’s the fun part of writing. We didn’t really know who Ford was, from a personality perspective, until we sat down to try to write him. The same is true of Dipper, Mabel, Grunkle Stan, and Bill. You learn as you go.
Kaiser: Fascinating! I suppose I must’ve heard about very early discussion, and extrapolated … as GF fans are wont to do. How embarrassing.
Hirsch: Casting also hugely affects a character. You have an idea of what a character is like in the writing room, but then when the actor comes in, everything can change. We cast JK Simmons as Ford late in the process. He was instantly perfect, but changed how we thought about the character. Regarding things I would love to explore if I could go back in time, I would definitely add a full episode about Wendy if I had the chance. We always wanted to give her more, but we never quite cracked a story that worked for us. But I do think she deserved more!
I deliberately tried to give her more of a role in Mabelcorn and Weirdmageddon Part 1 to make up for the lack of Wendy elsewhere. Linda Cardellini was amazing to work with. She gave the character such a grounded performance. Really was exciting to watch her work.
Kaiser: One of the issues around the show was representation/diversity, and there were a lot of rumors about what Disney would/wouldn’t allow—the little old ladies falling in love in “The Love God” is probably the most famous example. Any comment?
Hirsch: Definitely. If you’ve been following me for a while you’ll know I’ve never been shy about discussing my frustrations with Disney’s censors and this was one of the most frustrating incidents of all. Back on “Love God” there was a scene in the script that described a few random couples in a diner falling in love in through the power of cupid’s magic.
When one of our storyboard artists presented the scene to me, she’d made one of the couples two lovable old ladies. It was sweet and casual and I knew INSTANTLY that it was going to turn into a huge fight with Disney. So naturally I left it in. The note came back immediately “The scene of the two old ladies kissing in the diner is not appropriate for our audience. Please revise.” I responded with a one word answer: “Why?”
This basically broke the censors. The couldn’t think of a single way to phrase an answer to that question so they made me talk on the phone so there would be no paper trail. They were terrified of sounding like bigots—but I honestly don’t think they were bigots, I think they were cowards. They basically admitted that there was no good reason why I should change it, but that they get complaints about this stuff from various homophobic parents and would rather avoid the headache, and couldn’t I just drop it?
I said that if we did that we were basically just being held hostage by bigots and screw that, lets rise above this crap and just pull the trigger. The worst thing that can happen is that we get some letters. Who cares? Disney’s a giant company, we can survive some letters from some cranks. I don’t think they necessarily disagreed—but there’s no incentive in their job to say yes to things. But I kept going back to them.
We probably had 6 or so conversations about it. It’s one of the only times I had a face to face meeting with the censors. I didn’t want to go back to my board artist and tell her that I lost this fight. I wanted to win, and I wanted to set a precedent, and I argued that little things like this could mean the world to people and that anyone who was pissed off deserved to be pissed off. But despite my greatest efforts it finally came down to “change the scene or we’ll cut it out of the episode ourselves.”
I felt awful reporting to the artist that I’d lost this one. But I didn’t stop trying. In the last episode, I had the two police offers, Blubs and Durland, flat out say they loved each other, and I didn’t get a single note. I think the censors were finally less scared of complaining parents than they were of having to deal with how annoying I am again.
Since then, times have thankfully changed. I hear that Disney has allowed same-sex couples in Star Vs the Forces of Evil, and the Nickelodeon has done the same in Loud House. Both studios are way behind CN and what they’ve done with Steven Universe, but progress, slowly but surely, is being made. I would love to see a new Disney animated show have the guts to show a proper same-sex kiss on air. One of these networks is going to do it—I encourage Disney to keep growing and be the first.
[Note: We now enter the portion where I completely gave into my fannish id for a second. I hope you’ll all forgive me.]
Kaiser: Two things, purely to satisfy my curiosity as a fan: A) did Pacifica stay with her parents post-series? It seemed like a seriously bad situation, guardianship wise. B) what WOULD Bill have done if Ford had decided (that is, been dumb enough) to take him up on his offer?
Hirsch: I think a lot of fans read more than I meant into the awfulness of Pacifica’s parents. I never imagined them as being abusive, just very controlling—living vicariously through their daughter, treating her like a prize more than a person. I grew up in a town with some rich families and it was something I witnessed more than once—parents trying to make their kids extensions of their own reputation. Pacifica is still only a kid, so I think she’d continue to live with them, but I think she’d start to have a very needed rebellious phase to discover who she is outside of her family name.
I definitely imagined Pacifica getting a side job at Greasey’s Diner working with Lazy Susan after the family lost their mansion. I think learning the value of a dollar and having to interact with the town riff-raff would be good for her.
Re: What Bill might have done, like all things that happen off camera, that question has no true canon answer. But if I had to speculate, in my gut I think Bill would have incinerated Ford on the spot the moment he got the formula to shut down the barrier. I don’t see Bill as a romantic, sweet, or charitable character. He’s a psychopath who takes what he can get. He sees people as toys and when he gets bored of playing with them tosses them aside. I think at that point he was done playing.
Kaiser: Makes sense. There’s a decided inclination to read Bill as being sincerely impressed with Ford on some level because that’s the trope (i.e. Q in Star Trek), but it’s not quite in keeping with how things shook out, is it?
Hirsch: That’s not how I imagine Bill. I see him as a serial manipulator. While he’s “seducing” you with flattery his brain is somewhere else imagining playing ping-pong with a severed head. But people are free to imagine any headcanon they like! I’m genuinely excited by other people’s interpretation of the characters–but I never forget my own.
Kaiser: Is there a story behind that doodle you and Roiland (the creator of Rick & Morty) did of Rick and Stan? That’s a crossover that’s never coming, I’m sure, but I love the cross-show elements.
Hirsch: There’s been a lot of hay made out of the little winks about Gravity Falls in Rick & Morty, and vice versa, the truth is just that we’ve been friends since before we had TV shows, and enjoy messing with people. Although if we WERE planning something big we’d definitely deny it—so I guess you’ll never know!
Kaiser: You left one seriously huge plot thread open with Bill’s coded message in the finale and then the secret Axolotl page of the Choose Your Own Adventure book. Is that something you might come back to, or just a mystery for the fans to chew on?
Hirsch: In terms of Bill’s secret message … I like stories that complete their emotional arcs, but still leave some lingering threads to chew on. It gives the fans something to theorize on, and it gives me a window back into that world if I ever choose to return to it.
Kaiser: Do you have a medium you’d prefer? Or would it just depend at the time?
Hirsch: All depends on my schedule—and the creative urge. I’m involved in a number of projects right now, so it’s hard to say. Comics are definitely a possibility. And maybe a special one day. Honestly my dream would have been to do a Gravity Falls theatrical feature—Disney discussed it with me for a while, but ultimately (and probably rightfully) determined the show wasn’t big enough to warrant it. But if some lunatic wanted to give me 50 million dollars to make a Gravity Falls movie I’d probably do it!
Kaiser: Is there anything you can say about your other project (the one you publicly announced for Fox, or anything else), or is it too soon?
Hirsch: It’s too soon to say anything specific. I will say that Gravity Falls opened a huge number of doors and opportunities for me but I’m being careful not to announce anything until the time is right. (And most of the announcements and leaks you’ll see online about various things I’ve been involved with have been either inaccurate or premature) I can say that I have been working on a feature project that hasn’t leaked online (if you think you know what it is, you’re wrong!) that I’m very very excited about, but owing to the nature of the parties involved I can’t say anything. I’m counting down the days until I get to announce what it is.
Kaiser: As a closer, you published a series of tweets not long ago about the stigma against being allowed to fail that animators face. Do you have any advice for them?
Hirsch: Haha! Oh, that. My latest tweetstorm was specifically about a trend I see in animated series development, where executives will “develop” a show to death and waste time, money, and goodwill trying to come up with a risk-proof TV pilot. But every creative act is inherently risky. The key is to create an environment where risk is encouraged, and failures have as small a cost as possible. I believe failure is the first step to success. The key is to fail as quickly as possible and try again. To treat failure not as a terrifying ending but rather as an opportunity to learn something.
