Drago's beloved girlfriend would be able to introduce him to the holidays? If she likes them, but not Drago. And what gift do you think you could give him?

Drago probably already knows a bunch of the main holidays celebrated in the USA, as well as why they were created and still celebrated. With that being said, I don’t think Drago would celebrate any of them, well, aside from Halloween because ‘tis the season to be spooky scary. If anything, he’d be okay with Halloween. despise Christmas and the 4th of July. and not care about the rest.

Like I just said, Drago would like Halloween because of it’s scary aesthetic and its “praising“ amongst monsters and darkness. He’d hate Christmas because of all the mushy, heartfelt, family stuff. Kindness and compassion for no reason other than just because? Pathetic! Weak! For the 4th of July, and really any holiday like it, Drago doesn’t like it because it celebrates independence of humans. I guess you could also put Valentine’s Day under the “hated holidays“ list, but I think Drago would find that one more annoying than anger inducing.

Now, if Drago had a human s/o, they’d probably get him involved with some of them. Those like Valentines Day, Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc are really about being with family and expressing their affection/thankfulness to one another. Yeah, it all has human origins, but it’s also about in general love. Dude’s a grinch because he never felt loved, and therefore probably resents emotional holidays. However, since he is now with someone who absolutely ADORES him, he may start seeing it in a better light, even if it’s for slight selfish reasons on the surface (”Yes! Rain your gifts upon me!”). In addition, I don’t think Drago would be too warm towards strangers and relatives during these holidays even if he understands their meanings now, but he would warm with the s/o for obvious (attachment) reasons. Oh to imagine cuddling Drago under a warm blanket, drinking hot cocoa, watching a silly movie together, and then plopping a little Santa hat on his grumpy face. Imagine his surprise when you give him so many kisses for being so cute with that hat on~ *ahem* Anyways, insert every holiday movie classic with a person hating the holidays at first, but then finally shown the love they never knew, and then they finally understand the true meaning of compassion and family, and boom, ya got Drago’s “appreciating the holidays“ arc.

The next set of holidays would be those that fall under Easter, Saint Patrick’s Day, 4th of July, Halloween, etc. I’m not sure how most people view these holidays, but I look at them as “Fun Activities“ holidays. So, of course Drago would be from neutral to against for most of them for their origins or the “silly, pointless stuff“ one does, but again, once the s/o celebrates these holidays with/in front of him, he’d be a little more open with them. For example, Easter. Easter’s origins is about the resurrection of Christ, and for some reason you go on an egg hunt for goodies and prizes. Yeah, sounds dumb, BUT it could be some innocent fun if done right. The whole activity is to search for metaphorical/literal treats, whether it be chocolate, little toys, stuff you could actual use (stamps, bookmarks, jewelry, etc), etc. It’s all a treasure hunt, and really just about every creature that targets gaining happiness and satisfaction harbors curiosity. Drago would think it’s stupid, but just wait and see what his reaction(s) would be if you hid some stuff around the house, putting some riddled notes with a small piece of chocolate in every single one, and ultimately it leads to his Grande Surprise! He’ll want to resist it at first, but curiosity and greed will get the best of him, and if ya do it right, ya might get him like a cat looking for the scurrying mouse. Er, that last part might be romanticizing things, but still, so cuuute~

And just a quick note with the others, 4th of July is really about getting together, having a cook out and/or a camp out, and watching amazing fireworks to please that primordial brain part of ‘Ooo, shiny!’. Saint Patrick’s Day is purely about hanging out with friends, and Halloween is pretty obvious: Sweets and Scares all the way babyyyy.

Downside to all of this, Drago might catch on to it all being “required to socialize on these specific days,” when in reality nothing is stopping anyone with doing these same activities any other day of the year, well, aside from society telling you “no,“ and maybe needing a permit to do fireworks on any other day of the year, but my point still stands. You can hang out with people any day you want, give gifts whenever you want, and throw parties and gatherings whenever you want.

Holidays are specialized days to do these “extravagant“ activities all around the world and people will understand and be a part of it, but still, it feels all a little forced, ya know? It feels so much better to do something for someone on a whim than doing it because it’s a holiday, which makes it all feel required. Drago would definitely argue this at some point (and I totally agree with it with Christmas and kind of Halloween), but just actually have him Do the Things with you and be a part of something instead of being cut off all the time, he’ll warm up a little bit to it; just a little though. Maybe.

Reiterating, I personally believe people don’t like most holidays either because a lot of people who celebrate it are fucking annoying, or it’s because the former people never had a proper one, let alone had company and any good emotional attachments with anyone. So, what it comes down to is social animals need, well, to socializing, and the lack thereof drives one crazy, insane, and can and will cause mental problems. In a sense, holidays are important so social animals can get together for a yearly dose of needed chemicals to produce within them so they don’t break and become self destructive.

A-Anyways, that got a little deep. So, uh, what gifts would I give Drago... Well, he does come off as the type of person to not want anything unless they had some physical use to him, but there probably is some stuff he’d like just to have. So, I’d personally focus on getting him things he would use, like some cool-ass jackets and, if possible, some spellbooks so he can learn new magic stuffs. Ugh, I’m not good at giving gifts... The stuff that would make me feel like I gave him something worthwhile would be hand-made art pieces. I would LOVE to just... make things for him. A portrait of him, a sculpture of a fearsome Chinese dragon, a hand-made necklace, wood carved Chinese Zodiac animals, Bob Ross paintings of what his fantasy palace would look like, a hand knit blanket and/or sweater and gloves, etc. I never feel like “just buying something“ is ever good enough and I need to actually make something because that is the closest thing to the heart a gift can be. Going out and buying things, well, I guess imperial and Chinese looking things because of his heritage, aesthetic, and the suggested power Imperial China gives off.

But yeah, the best gifts would probably be things that he can actually use and its design or whatever is something that pleases him. So, uh, Chinese Dragon biker jacket, dawg. Maybe some finger less, fire resistant gloves or something.

The Golden Rules When Booking Live Entertainment for Your Event

Tips & Tricks For The Entertainment Buyer

Having worked as a professional magician and mind reader for the past sixteen years, I have seen hundreds if not thousands of venues all over the world. From Boston, where I am based, to Singapore, where I work for a few weeks once per year, and many cities and countries in between. A similarity that crosses all borders is the consistent lack of knowledge the client has when booking live entertainment. This is true for that of a variety type. (e.g magicians, jugglers, clowns, etc.).

Now this can be forgiven (to an extent), as most people have not booked live entertainment before and know absolutely nothing about how the process works. These individuals can be forgiven and kindly instructed by the performer on how the smooth the process can and should be. That said, when you as the entertainer are working through a seasoned booker (e.g someone who works for a company that plans all large and small functions), there is really no excuse for poor booking processes.

After speaking with several performer friends from all areas of entertainment, we have come up with a list of guidelines any future client should be at least familiar with before hiring professional entertainment.

When To Book Live Entertainment

So you want to hire some entertainment for your party, event, graduation, anniversary, etc. Whatever the case may be, you want to spice it up with something live and fun! First thing you should know is that performers of all varieties whether magicians, fire eaters or live bands, need time to prepare their shows. Most of us specially design our performances around your event, and this does take some time and will go into the price of the performance. You will want to give at least 3-4 weeks notice to a performer before booking. This is my suggested time frame for me, other performers require much earlier notice, and some can take an event with just a couple days notice. It depends on our schedules, current bookings and flexibility and of course, the performer himself (or herself). Our schedules are very strange, and totally non-traditional - we can have gigs at all hours of the day, night, and even into the very early mornings. Please Note: If you call a performer a day or two, or three, or even four before your event, they will most likely charge a little more for the short notice. It takes time to make your event special, whether by creating custom routines as I do, setting up a music set list, or getting required licenses or permits for more dangerous acts like fire eating and sideshow stunts.

What Are You Looking For

Hiring entertainment for your event can really enhance your guests' experience. Whether it's a live band, DJ, caricaturist, or magician, live performances create a truly unique experience that your guests will share with their friends and families when they leave. You want to determine what kind of entertainment best suits your particular event. For example: If you're getting married at a golf resort. With 200 guests and a traditional setup (cocktail hour, plated dinner, speeches, dancing, etc.), then you will want to determine where and when entertainment makes sense. If you're interested in magic or mind reading, which is very popular at weddings, then you would be best to place it into the cocktail reception for what is called "strolling" or "walk-around." This is where the performer wanders through your cocktail hour performing small, up close effects and routines for small groups of guests. This offers a personal experience you sometimes lose with a full length show. It also breaks up the occasional repetitiveness of such portions of the event. Magic, mind reading or a little light music can really make a difference. Have an idea of what you want, lay out your event, and see where it makes the most sense. Maybe a full length comedy mind reading show after a three day corporate retreat? Or perhaps you're celebrating your child's birthday and want some entertainment to keep all the little guests entertained? A children's magic and balloon show is a perfect fit here. Determine Your Budget

This is by far one of the most important points a soon-to-be entertainment buyer must understand. It should be known that every performer, no matter what persuasion, charges differently. A fire eater will charge differently from a juggler or clown. A mentalist will charge differently from a magician or stilt walker. This is based on how they value their time and expertise.

Have at least a rough idea on what you're looking to spend on entertainment. Do not be afraid to ask a performer if he or she can work within your budget. Be realistic about it and think about your event and the kind of image that you want your guests to take home with them, and try to get a rough idea on what you would be willing to spend achieve that image. You will not insult us with your budget. We will just say no politely or even recommend someone who could better work within your financial parameters.

Entertainers usually know each other and bounce work around quite a bit. We almost always know what our friends and competitors charge. The more unique the performance style, the smaller number of performers. If you have $200 for a full length hypnosis performance, you may want to look into another form of entertainment. Most hypnotists don't leave home for less than triple that amount. If you have $5,000 for entertainment, then you're in a whole new bracket of entertainers. More on that later.

Details, Details, Details

Now you know what you want. The next thing to do is get your details together. These include the following in order of importance for the performer to know:

1. Date of the Event

2. Time You Want The Entertainer To Arrive & To Begin Performing

3. Type of Event (birthday, corporate lunch, trade show, etc.)

4. What You Want From The Entertainer in Detail

5. Budget!

6. How Many Guests You're Expecting

7. Description of the Venue (indoors, outdoors, theater style seating, tables, etc.)

8. Will There Be Other Entertainment (what kind, how long, etc.)

9. Have All Of Your Info Available (phone number, email, mailing address, etc.)

Having this information ready when you call an entertainer will make your booking process go much, much smoother and usually result in only one, maybe two phone calls or emails. Missing information does happen. Maybe you don't have your venue nailed down yet? No problem, try to give us a rough idea of where you're looking so we know how to prepare. If you're thinking a typically busy, dark restaurant but then go for a show at the beach, in the sun, with wind... This will be a little frustrating for the entertainer.

Know Your Venue

As stated above, the venue is very important. To most of us, we can perform practically anywhere (within reason). I've worked on moving boats, trains, and even on a private jet. Some of us who work with dangerous items, such as sword swallowers or fire breathers, require very specific environments in which to work safely for themselves and the guests in attendance.

Let's look at a few examples of common venue locations for a mentalist or magician:

1. The Country Club - always a popular location for a little walk around magic/mind reading or even a full length performance. Usually everyone is well-dressed, having formal meals, and looking for a more sophisticated form of entertainment. This is not the best place for a chainsaw juggler.

2. The Nightclub - usually dedicated to bachelor/bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, company buy-outs, holiday parties and practically any event you'd book to have some serious fun! Usually it is very loud, crowded, and drinks are flowing. This is not the best time to have a palm reader or full length magic show. Instead you could opt for some strolling entertainment, live music, or even a dance group.

3. Your Residence - Probably the most common location for family events, graduations, anniversaries and private holiday parties. You won't normally see a lot of craziness as you would in the nightclub. Such events are normally filled with family members, friends and children. Everyone knows each other, is very comfortable and is not scared of being a little silly from time to time. A great time for a hypnotist! Or even personal tarot readings. Definitely a great time for a mind reading performance.

The point is to use your venue to its absolute potential. Play out the scenario in your head with the entertainment you have in mind. If it seems like it could work, go for it. Chances are you're right!

Price Shopping

As performers we all work insanely hard to provide the absolute best entertainment for the best possible value. Our prices are all different, but with variations based on what we offer, where we live, how much equipment we have to transport, etc. Customers should know that there is A LOT more that goes into the booking on our end then you might think. This can include organizing our material, writing up contracts, invoices, and riders, getting to and from the gig; setting up; tearing down; packing at home; unpacking at home; re-setting our equipment; writing emails; making phone calls; updating schedules and social media; and more. What the customer sees is a small portion of the work performers do for a single booking. All of that goes into our fees as well. Please keep this in mind if you live in northern Maine and you really want the face painter from New Jersey at your party.

That said, price shopping does not mean you will get the best show for the lowest price. Also, the highest price artist out there is not necessarily better than the one who charges half or more less than that. Your selection should be based on recommendations, referrals, skill-set, and your budget. Not everyone can afford to book Aerosmith. For example; say you are hiring a children's magician for a birthday party. In New England, the rough booking fees range between $275 and $500 for an hour long show, with the ability to have add-ons like balloon animals, teach-a-trick, or magic goody bags. If you're getting offers at $100 or even Less! you should seriously consider what you're getting. Watch videos, call past clients, check the quality of their website, marketing materials, etc.. Do your homework! You wouldn't by 100 pairs of socks for $1.00 would you?

Referrals VS Resume

This can be a tricky section for a buyer. A lot of entertainers, especially when they're just starting out tend to fluff their resumes with big name clients to draw attention. In many cases they're not totally accurate. That doesn't mean they're not good performers, they're just trying to get some business. Then again, a lot of professionals out there have very thick resumes that are all 100% legit. You can usually tell from observation who's on the level and who isn't.

The best way you can make a decision is through referrals, testimonials, video demonstrations and reviews. Any magician or mentalist worth his salt will post a video of a portion of his show, as a teaser. This is the hardest hitting material that makes the audience go wild. I would be leery of a performer who didn't have at least some kind of video, even a poor-quality one. It's 2014 after all; most of us have cameras in our phones that shoot better than handheld cameras just a few years earlier.

I've found that the best way I book events is through word-of-mouth and my website with a link to my YouTube channel.

Actual VS Perceived Value

Like referrals vs. resume this can be a tricky section to explain correctly. As a quick definition, the actual value of a performer is connected to the following: his or her performance quality, attitude (courteous, respectful of clients needs, friendly without being annoyingly friendly or overly familiar, etc.), dress sense/style, and uniqueness of the performance. Now these are just examples and include quite a few other points that you'll notice after you hire entertainment. Notice how price was not a part of the actual value. The fee a performer requires for the event is based around the points I made above in point 6. You will not know the actual value of your performer until you've hired him or her to perform. Now, perceived value is what we do when we look at the artists' website, bio, pictures, videos, social media pages, etc. We determine if we like them within the first minute - or usually a lot sooner.

It should be known that the perceived value can absolutely work against you. There are performers out there who spend thousands of dollars on top quality websites, advertising materials, search engine optimization, and promotional videos, but when you see them live, you are quickly hit with just how bad they are. This happens quite a bit, especially amongst the younger generation of performers. Video editing software and the right person behind the keyboard can make anyone look amazing. Do not let the perceived value of a performer determine whether or not you want to book them. Use that information as a reference to what you can probably (not always) expect when the show begins. Focus on referrals, reviews (from real people), media write-ups, and recommendations from friends or family that may have booked entertainment in the past. The best advertising for a performer is word-of-mouth!

Free Work VS Donated Work

Ask any performer how many times they're offered "great publicity" in exchange for performing for free. It happens to all of us, a lot. I personally am asked to perform for free at least once a week. Nine times out ten I have to decline the event. Entertainers who are starting out may take the booking even though it doesn't pay. They're looking for "flight-time" or time in front of a real audience to practice, rehearse material and get comfortable in their field. This is perfectly acceptable and should be encouraged to young or new performers. However, a professional entertainer, be it a magician, mentalist, juggler or human blockhead, will probably not take a free show in exchange for an ad in the magazine, free publicity, or free food.

Almost all of us entertain as a full-time job. We work solely as performers and we expect to be paid for our time, just as you expect to be paid where you work. You will probably insult a performer if you offer publicity in exchange for money they'd use to pay bills and buy food. After all, you found us so the publicity is already working right?

Now when it comes to donated work, it's a much different story. At least for me. Please be aware I am not speaking for ALL performers working. Everyone is different and structures his business differently. Some performers will probably not agree with things in this article and it's totally fine! Donating our time to a cause is something in which a lot of us take great pride. Every year I donate at least 10 hours of performing to various charities around New England. These are ones that are very close to me, such as The American Cancer Society, Horizons for Homeless Children and The American Red Cross. I love giving my time to these organizations and being a small part of making a difference. We entertainers are all full of emotion and big hearts and we love to see the expression of happiness on people's faces who otherwise would be sad or in pain.

Be aware of your situation when offering an event to a performer for very little or no money. If it's a cause that we believe in and we can spare the time on our schedules, we will jump at the chance. If not, please do not take it personally and understand we need to work and earn as much as possible in order to keep providing entrainment to people around the world.

Contracts, Invoices, Agreements, Riders

The boring details of the booking process, lots of invoices, contracts and specifications that almost every performer requires are vital to the quality of the performance. Contracts are absolutely essential for a performer to have, and we will use them for the smallest to the largest event. Most of us have had the experience of "being burned" on bookings because we didn't have an agreement in place. We learn quickly (well most of us do) and adopt the contract policy to ALL bookings, even donated time bookings. Do not take offense if your children's magician requires a contract for his performance.

Most of us keep very detailed records of every gig we work. Invoices, contracts and emails are all essential pieces of material for our tax purposes, marketing strategies, and general peace of mind. I personally require a contract, invoice and performance rider for my shows. Most of the points in my agreements do not apply to every single show. However, a lot of the time they do. If we ask for a table or access to plugs, that the windows be closed, or that we're in the shade if outdoors, understand these are important factors that will go into the quality of our performances. We can usually perform in most places under most conditions, but some entertainers can not be indoors without proper licensing (such as people who work with fire or dangerous objects) or outdoors without a tent or waterproof area. Basically, it's common sense. The DJ you hired for your daughter's wedding will not want to work in the middle of the sun for five hours with hundreds of feet of extension cords running all over your event. Plan accordingly and your event will be a huge success!

Understanding What You're Paying For

I know I have covered this in earlier points but it is very important to understand what you're actually paying for when booking a performer. Remember we spend years and years perfecting our skills to make them look flawless when showtime comes. Some of us live far away from your venue and have to travel quite a distance to get to the gig. I personally drive about 35,000 miles a year just for performances, and fly about 40,000. We spend a lot of our time in airports, cars and traffic! Our fees are constructed by us based on what we believe our performances are worth. This includes the years of practice, travel to and from the event, all the work we do before the show itself, what kind of event it is, and how popular and in demand we are. Cheaper does NOT mean better!

Paying Your Entertainer(s)

I would say I've waited probably two years' worth of days on being paid for some events. That does not happen anymore. It is not acceptable to make a performer wait longer than the agreed upon time of payment. As I said before, we are full time entertainers and expect to be paid before or immediately after we perform. Our shows are all one-of-a-kind demonstrations and no show is the same (at least as a mentalist). So what you're getting is a totally unique experience. A good way of looking at it is this: If you worked for a week straight and your boss said "Sorry, but would it be okay if we paid you in three weeks for this week?" You would probably lose your sh*t. That is exactly how we feel when we have to wait for payment for our services. We arrived on time, performed, and were professional, and we expect to be paid accordingly.

It is customary to pay an entertainer prior to the start of the performance. Most of us require a deposit of some kind along with our contract or invoice signed. Those who don't require a deposit (well, they should) should be paid in full on the day of the event. Please be aware of this when hiring entertainment for your next party. Not only will your performer thank you kindly, he or she will be sure to make your event a huge success.

Tipping: Gratuity for a performer, DJ, or artist lets us know you really enjoyed our work. We do not factor gratuity into our fees (at least I and my friends don't) so any extra tip you have for us will be greatly appreciated. Don't be afraid of what to give for a tip - we are grateful you thought of it at all. Most people don't usually think to tip entertainment, so when it comes we are always very happy. This is especially important amongst entertainers you didn't book, like street performers and carnival or fair artists. Most of them accept tips and some get paid ONLY in tips. Keep that in mind after you watch the street performers in Fanueil Hall in Boston during the spring and summer months.

They say we are each free to pursue happiness in our own way, in whatever form that may mean to us personally, and in the idiosyncratic manner best suited to our own inclinations.

Every form of freedom I can think of that is worth actually having either costs a lot of money or has already been made illegal.

Am I free to walk off into the forest and build a log cabin? I mean sure, if I first purchase the land, then get the planning permission & employ a licensed contractor to build it to the safety specification etc etc

Can I take a group of friends and occupy some abandoned industrial factory, then try and turn it into a.rich green garden of over-growing plants and tangled, blooming relationships and perhaps even (in the right season) farm a crop of meaning out of it?

Is there no place left on earth we can still wander & get a little lost in, where if you go they won’t try to follow you? 

The only frontiers that remain exist purely in the realm of the symbolic. The little private fiefdoms we can carve out for ourselves because surveillance is (not yet) all pervasive and enforcement of the law remains an economic game of how best to assign entirely limited resources to practically unlimited crimes. 

Shit man. I think our only chance is to slip like pick pockets into whatever obscure through-fares of ideology that may yet remain unnamed. Look: If the only soil they are going to give us -- the soil we are supposed to farm enough meaning from to supply the entire rest of our lives -- if this “soil” is really just the dead black dust of recycled asphalt & finely ground up plastic 

-- then I think we simply have no other choice but to build a whole new psycho-geography of hope, right there on the top of it.

I leave true revolution to the prayers of the idealists. My only real wish is for there to be enough cracks left in the concrete that something truly wild might get to grow unnoticed. 

I’m old enough to know that confronting power directly is often extremely foolish, and that better results may usually be obtained by simply routing around authority. To be a smuggler of dreams requires nimble feet and a faster speed boat than your opponent, still, it is generally better not to dress too flashy. While staying anonymous, no particular indignity is likely to occur to you beyond the usual laundry list, but if the Eye Of Sauron ever becomes focused in your direction then may god help you because the authorities can easily bring down such  immense force to bear so incredibly quickly, they will  come to your home carrying a huge lever & then not hesitate to use your little life as a fulcrum, merely for causing them some minor irritation.  

This is why finding those phantasmal frontier towns is so important. It’s less about the initial gold rush than it is finding a place for you to finally  stretch your legs. Examples must be made, standards must be set, and any deviance, degeneracy or drunken shenanigans of any sort must be quickly and severely punished ( for the sake of clarity,  “shenanigans” also includes decadence and/or diabolism). There are no ifs, buts, or caveats; a new curfew is now in place: from sunup to sundown, “if you think you might, don’t”; additionally, there is absolutely no tom-foolery to be had without a permit (permits are NEVER issued), and any vagrants (exact definition of this term is left to the Sheriff’s discretion) found without a leash or collar in a public park will be first taken to the city Pound and, if unclaimed at the end of seven days, humanely euthanised. Tickets to perform humane euthanisations are available at a cost of forty dollars and strictly provided on a “first-come, first-served” basis.

To a Child the Mother Comes

Year 1898. Place: Kshir-Bhavani Temple in Kashmir. Swami Vivekananda stands pondering over the ruins of the temple and the desecration wrought by the Muslim invaders. Distressed at heart, he thinks: “How could the people have permitted such sacrilege without offering strenuous resistance? If I were here then, I would never have allowed such things. I would have laid down my life to protect the Mother.” No sooner this thought strikes him than he hears a voice deep inside his heart—the voice of the Divine Mother:

“What even if unbelievers should enter my temples and defile my images! What is that to you? Do you protect me? Or do I protect you?”

In the same shrine, on another day, the Mother speaks to him again. When Swamiji thinks of building a new temple to the Mother on the same spot where the dilapidated temple stands, the Mother’s voice comes to him:

“My child! If I wish I can have innumerable temples and magnificent monastic centers. I can even this moment raise a seven-storied golden temple on this very spot.”

The scales are removed from Swamiji’s eyes. “No more ‘Hari Om!’ It is all ‘Mother’ now!” he later says. “All my patriotism is gone. Everything is gone. Now it is only ‘Mother! Mother!’  … I am only a little child!”

Back in Kolkata, he tells a disciple, “Since hearing that divine voice, I cherish no more plans. The idea of building monasteries etc., I have given up. As Mother wills, so it will be.” This sets the disciple thinking of earlier occasions when he had heard Swamiji say that whatever one sees or hears is but the echo of what’s going on within. He asks, “Swamiji, but you used to say that divine voices are the echo of our inward thoughts and feelings.” Swamiji’s grave reply:

“Whether it be internal or external, if you actually hear with your ears such a disembodied voice, as I have done, can you deny it and call it false? Divine Voices are actually heard, just as you and I are talking.”

On another occasion we find Swamiji saying, “These gods are not merely symbols! They are the forms that devotees have seen!” (The Master as I Saw Him, 166)

How perplexing these statements appear when we compare them with Swamiji’s lectures on Advaita Vedanta, where he ruthlessly demolishes all clinging to names and forms, and affirms the supreme reality, Brahman, who is beyond all names, beyond all forms, the absolute, the One without-a-second (ekam eva advitīyam)! Where and how does the Divine Mother fit into the Vedantic scheme?

Swamiji himself had at one time difficulty accepting the Divine Mother. Then came the great event of which we know almost nothing—Sri Ramakrishna “dedicated” him to Mother.

“How I used to hate Kali! [Swamiji said] And all her ways! That was the ground of my six years’ fight ─ that I would not accept her. But I had to accept her at last! Ramakrishna Paramahamsa dedicated me to her, and now I believe that she guides me in every little thing I do, and does with me what she will … Yet I fought so long!...

“No, the thing that made me do it is a secret that will die with me. I had great misfortunes at that time … It was an opportunity … She made a slave of me. Those were the very words—‘a slave of you.’ And Ramakrishna Paramahamsa made me over to her…” (CW 8. 263)

After Mother took charge of Swamiji’s life, it was she who did everything for him, he was only her little child, utterly dependent on her. And she never deserted him even for a moment. Wherever he turned, he once said, he was conscious of the presence of Mother, as if she were a person in the room (The Master as I Saw Him, 124). How were Brahman and the Divine Mother reconciled in Swamiji’s mind? The answer is not very clear. Perhaps the two can never be reconciled through mere intellect. Swamiji once referred to this paradoxical situation as “unity in complexity.” This is what he said:

“You see, I cannot but believe that there is somewhere a great Power that thinks of herself as feminine, and called Kali, and Mother … And I believe in Brahman too … But is it not always like that?  Is it not the multitude of cells in the body that make up the personality, the many brain-centers, not the one, that produce consciousness [of the objective world]? … Unity in complexity!  Just so! And why should it be different with Brahman? It is Brahman. It is that One. And yet─and yet─it is the gods too!” (CW 8. 264)

Now, these are not very philosophical statements. But philosophy is guided by logic to help us understand and sometimes it may not represent the reality of things. In his talks at the Thousand Island Park, in upstate New York, Swamiji returns again and again to this theme: philosophy vs religion. “Religion begins,” he says, “where philosophy ends” (CW 7. 44). After all, philosophy can take me only as far as my intellect can go. Spiritual life really begins when I transcend the barriers of my mind and intellect. Religion is not merely an acceptance of, or faith in, a certain philosophy, or in dogmas and rituals, but the actual experience (anubhūti) of God. “Religion consists solely in realization” (CW 7. 96).

No amount of reason can disprove a genuine experience, and Swamiji’s encounter with the Divine Mother was an undeniable experience for him. Swamiji’s “Mother” can never be understood independently of Sri Ramakrishna’s “Mother.” “He who is Brahman is verily Śakti, the Divine Mother herself!”─this key is the pivot round which Sri Ramakrishna’s teachings (as recorded in the Gospel of Sri Ramakrishna) revolve. His concept of the Divine Mother has special relevance to our times. 

God as Mother

What does the Divine Mother mean to you and me? Certain things become obvious at once. First, the relationship with God as Mother has certain distinct advantages over other types of relationships. In devotional texts, several such spiritual approaches or relationships (bhāvas) are mentioned─śānta (a tranquil relationship), dāsya (being God’s servant), sakhya (being God’s friend), vātsalya (being God’s mother), and madhura (being God’s lover). We learn about the benefits of cultivating a close relationship with God, and are advised to direct our lives and actions, our thoughts and words, in a manner appropriate to the relationship. 

Every one these forms has specific characteristics. Countless devotees have attained perfection through the practice of one or the other of these bhāvas, aided no doubt by God’s grace in overcoming certain inhibiting features present in them. We find in these bhāvas either an unbridgeable gap between God and the devotee, or too much of intimacy which shuts off the “savior” aspect of the Divine we need in times of distress and calamity. Both these factors are taken care of when the devotee looks up to God as Mother. There is no gap to be bridged between a baby and her mother, and there is no one the baby turns to for protection more than her mother. 

The cultivation of relationship with God as Mother (mātṛ-bhāva) is not a new phenomenon. The roots of Mother-worship are traced back to prehistoric times. Sri Ramakrishna revived this ancient ideal in a big way through his teachings and more through his life. Evidently, God as Mother has a special relevance in the times we live in. Strictly speaking, the spiritual attitude of a child should be called santāna-bhāva. This would be valid irrespective of whether God is looked upon as the Father or the Mother. The use of the term mātŗ-bhāva precludes this ambiguity, and should be understood to mean “the spiritual relationship of a child towards God as Mother.” Sri Ramakrishna is known to have used both the terms— mātŗ-bhāva and santāna-bhāva—with reference to his own practice.

Why is the maternal aspect of God superior to the other aspects of divinity? The answer is that the Divine Mother meets all of our requirements. As mother she is very close to us, her children, but her closeness does not stand in the way of her being our guide and savior. As mother she loves us as none else can, and yet her love for us does not stand in the way of her punishing us for our good when necessary. As mother she is most intimate with us, and yet her intimacy does not stand in the way of her keeping aloof from all our frivolities.

As her children we feel free to protest and argue with her, our Mother, knowing full well that she would understand. Our outbursts at the workplace or at home may not always be understood, but the Mother always understands. Others may neglect us, betray us, desert us, revile us—but the Mother, never! She puts up with all the weaknesses, all the silliness, all the faults of her children. No matter how many times we fall down, she is there to pick us up and hold us. In some ways, a child always remains a part of her or his mother, even after birth. Some invisible bond binds the two throughout their lives. What more can devotees ask for than the knowledge that they are eternally connected to the Divine Mother, that they are an inseparable part of her? 

The greatest manifestation of love, the purest and the most selfless love we can conceive of, is the mother’s love for her child. What wonder then that we look upon God as our own Mother? That seems to be only a natural way we can reach out to the Supreme Being who gives us birth, nourishes us, and to whom we ultimately return. God as Mother scores a march over all other aspects in a most natural way.

Devotee as a Child

Looking upon God as Mother obviously implies looking upon oneself as her child. I cannot say God is my Mother without feeling that I am her child. Although we are all─every one of us, with no exceptions—her children, it must be admitted that to be always conscious of the fact that we are her children is not easy. It is difficult because we have consciously or unconsciously put on several masks over ourselves. Worse still, we have forgotten that these are only masks. We take them to be our true selves, while the real self─the Mother’s child─remains hidden inside, unknown, uncared for.

The important point to note is that I don’t have to become a Mother’s child, I am already her child. What I must do is just remove the false masks covering my true personality. When all the masks fall away, the Mother’s child is revealed. If anyone tries to become a Mother’s child, they usually end up adding one more mask over their already multi-masked personality. A child-mask cannot give me the feeling that I am a child, although I may perhaps succeed for a time in making others believe that I am.

Even I may be led to believe that. Such self-deceptions do occur. How pathetic a sight it is to see aging men and women trying to hide their age with makeup, dress and lifestyle! They may refuse to accept for a time the fact that they are no longer young and continue to prance around as youths. But sooner or later they are forced to accept the reality. A masked face is just like that. A child-mask cannot endure eternally. It is a mask, after all. Sometime or the other it must fall. When it does, it reveals the other masks beneath. Usually people keep shuffling their masks to suit different occasions and situations. (In a weird sort of way, this is what we are doing at present with the physical masks forced upon us by the pandemic.)

To be a Mother’s child is not to put on the mask of a child, but to remove all the masks and let the child within breathe freely. Childhood is a stage of life everyone passes through. Physically everyone outgrows that stage after a time. That is unavoidable. The tragedy is that we also outgrow the innocence, faith and purity of childhood. To be a child of the Divine Mother is to recover that innocence, faith and purity. Here, again, it is to be remembered that these are not qualities to be acquired. Vedanta says that we don’t have to become innocent, we are that already. We don’t have to acquire faith, we already have that within us. We don’t have to become pure, we are pure already. Certain obstacles are blocking the way and preventing these inherent qualities, which are our true nature, from manifesting themselves. Our task is only to remove the obstacles, and our true nature─pure, blissful, eternal─will shine forth by itself.

This is the refrain in one of Śri Śaṅkara’s hymns to the Divine Mother (Devyaparādha-kṣamāpaṇa-stotra): 

कुपुत्रो जायेत क्वचिदपि कुमाता न भवति ।

Kuputro jāyeta kvacid api kumātā na bhavati.

“There may be a bad child, but never has there been a bad mother.” 

Very true, no doubt. But this should not be interpreted to mean that we can live as we please, but the Divine Mother, ever-good as she is, will nonetheless free the “bad child” from all bondages and bestow on us the supreme bliss of spiritual freedom. No, she won’t do that. She will very likely wait until the “bad child” turns over a new leaf and struggles to overcome the old tendencies. She will, of course, help us in our struggles, but we must struggle. There is no escaping that. Sri Ramakrishna describes this phenomenon when Keshab Sen asks him, “Why do I not see God?” Sri Ramakrishna reply:

“You do not see God because you busy yourself with such things as name and fame and scholarship. The mother does not come to the child as long as it sucks its toy─a red toy. But when, after a few minutes, it throws the toy away and cries, then the Mother takes down the rice-pot from the hearth and comes running to the child.

“[To a devotee] You are engaged in arbitration. ‘The Divine Mother says to herself: “My child over there is now busy arbitrating and is very happy. Let him be.” (Gospel, p. 614)

Unless we throw away the toys of this world and weep for the Divine Mother, she will not come. This is the plain truth. Let us have no illusion about this.

The Mother-Power Has Been ‘Awakened’

Time is propitious once again. Swami Vivekananda once said, “In this age the Brahma-kuṇḍalinī─the Mother who is responsible for the creation, preservation and destruction of the universe─has been awakened by the fervent prayers of Sri Ramakrishna.” Commenting on this statement, Mahapurush Maharaj (Swami Shivananda) said:

“No wonder the individual kuṇḍalinī will be awakened now! That is why we see symptoms of a great spiritual upsurge everywhere. The Mother, the Primal Energy, is sporting for the good of the world using the body of Sri Ramakrishna. We need have no worry this time.”

Obviously, Sri Ramakrishna’s “awakening” of the Mother-power has made our task easy. Struggle we still have to, but our struggles in spiritual life will bear fruit more quickly as a result of Sri Ramakrishna’s advent.

We are in the midst of the Mother season. Last month we celebrated the worship of Durgā and Lakṣmī, last night was Kālī Pujā, and very soon there will be the worship of Jagaddhātrī, followed a few weeks later by the worship of Holy Mother Sarada Devi. Let us use these auspicious occasions to remind ourselves of our eternal relationship with God as Mother. Let us pray intensely and let us weep that we have not yet been blessed with Mother’s vision. 

Which mother can keep away for long when her child begins to cry? We cry for so many things. Why not learn to cry for the Divine Mother? Let every one of us be a child whose cry cannot be silenced by any worldly toy, for it is only to such a child that the Mother comes.

That said, when you as the entertainer are working through a seasoned booker (e.g someone who works for a company that plans all large and small functions), there is really no excuse for poor booking processes.

After speaking with several performer friends from all areas of entertainment, we have come up with a list of guidelines any future client should be at least familiar with before hiring professional entertainment.

When To Book Live Entertainment

So you want to hire some entertainment for your party, event, graduation, anniversary, etc. Whatever the case may be, you want to spice it up with something live and fun! First thing you should know is that performers of all varieties whether magicians, fire eaters or live bands, need time to prepare their shows. Most of us specially design our performances around your event, and this does take some time and will go into the price of the performance. You will want to give at least 3-4 weeks notice to a performer before booking. This is my suggested time frame for me, other performers require much earlier notice, and some can take an event with just a couple days notice. It depends on our schedules, current bookings and flexibility and of course, the performer himself (or herself). Our schedules are very strange, and totally non-traditional - we can have gigs at all hours of the day, night, and even into the very early mornings. Please Note: If you call a performer a day or two, or three, or even four before your event, they will most likely charge a little more for the short notice. This is by far one of the most important points a soon-to-be entertainment buyer must understand. It should be known that every performer, no matter what persuasion, charges differently. A fire eater will charge differently from a juggler or clown. A mentalist will charge differently from a magician or stilt walker. This is based on how they value their time and expertise.

Have at least a rough idea on what you're looking to spend on entertainment. Do not be afraid to ask a performer if he or she can work within your budget. Be realistic about it and think about your event and the kind of image that you want your guests to take home with them, and try to get a rough idea on what you would be willing to spend achieve that image. Bimini:  Hit.  This gem is just two hours off the coast of Florida  AND there’s a (new) legit Hilton hotel that is stunningly beautiful.  There’s a casino, multiple relaxing pools, bars, good wi-fi, a fitness center and several dining options.  Offsite, Big John’s is worth hitting (newly remodeled) and its worth taking a short boat ride over to Honeymoon Harbor  – where you can swim with the stingrays.  We’re told the fishing here is also fantastic…but that also means the water is riddled with sharks!…so maybe not the best diving area?  Not sure, we didn’t risk it.

2.  Nassau:  Hit.  As mentioned in my previous post, we had an absolute blast at Atlantis.   Everything at the marina is first rate – the service is friendly, the docks are impeccable and the hotel itself is grand in nature.  “Paradise Island” was appropriately dubbed!   On our way back, Atlantis was fully booked so we opted to stay on the other side of Nassau at Palm Cay Marina.  Another little slice of paradise…The marina is new, has the cheapest fuel we’ve seen in the Bahamas and has an excellent staff.  Cars are on site for rental, the area feels fresh and clean and it appears that its only getting better (fitness center and condos under construction).

3.  Berry Islands:  Miss.  Maybe i’ll get some different opinions here and maybe its a product of having been in the islands for too long and not being able to truly appreciate it but unfortunately, there wasn’t much take away from the Berrys.  The people on the island were incredibly friendly (inviting us to attend a cookout on the beach) and the marina we visited had free bikes and was reasonably priced – but just another 3 hrs. south (see # 5) puts you at the gates to pure bliss….so if we had to do it over again, we’d bypass this stop.

4. Allen’s Cay:  Hit.  Because…iguanas!

5.  Highbourne Cay:  Hit!  Highbourne Cay Marina is what vacation dreams are made of.  Let me start with the surreal water.  I have no idea why, but its a different, more brilliant color than anywhere else we went in the Bahamas.  But once you get into your slip, it just gets better and better.  As you make your way up to the office to check in, the grounds are plush and clean and incredibly inviting.  The staff are friendly and efficient.  The onsite grocery market is seriously the best stocked and cleanest in all of the exumas (yes, better than Exuma Market in Georgetown).  They offer complimentary bikes to explore the island, which you could spend days doing….making your way to Horseshoe Beach (with complimentary beach chairs, kayaks and paddle boards)  or to the Hawk’s Nest – perched on a high point of the island and fully equipped with workout gear (free weights, TRX straps, resistance bands, yoga mats, etc.).  The onsite restaurant is delicious and (true to form) has an amazing view and perfect ambiance. They even have Whispering Angel rosé on the menu!  (score!)

6.  Norman’s Cay:  Hit.  This was one of my favorite anchorages – it was peaceful and the sunset was unreal.  We had dinner at MacDuff’s.  It was priiiicey but good.

 7.  Warderick Wells Land & Sea Park:  I’m on the fence about this one.  There’s not much other than the scenery to take in.  We took a decent hike up to the cliffs and Tom did a fair amount of snorkeling but you can’t fish or spear anything on the island, there are no amenities (i.e. restaurants, convenience store, water, ice, power or any trace of cell service).  If you go into knowing this, then it could be fun for a night or two.  We used the opportunity to learn a new card game and lounge under the stars.  No complaints, but not exactly enchanting either.

8. Staniel Cay/Big Major Cay: Hit.  Who doesn’t want to see the swimming pigs??   The Staniel Cay Yacht Club also has a good thing going on!  Friendly staff (Jen, is sweetest!), a fun island vibe and the food is incredible.  Definitely do the evening sit-down dinner!  Its romantic and priced on point.  Its also worth noting that we spotted Bono dining here…Tom was awestruck.

9. Farmers Cay: Miss. This was a sore disappointment for us.  There’s nothing noteworthy here that you can’t see elsewhere and the docking facilities were in sad shape. Goat photos not taken at “Farmers Cay” but too cute and appropriate not to post!

10. Emerald Bay:  Hit. Tom would harshly disagree with me on this but (!) given that Great Exuma was supposed to be…great…i’d have to say, in my book, this was the shining star of the big island.  The Marina at Emerald Bay is owned/operated by Sandals and it has its act together.  You can purchase day passes to the Sandals Resort or walk directly across the street to Grand Isle Resort for an idealistic beach experience.  The Marina at Emerald Bay has free laundry and free wi-fi…rarities!!

12.  Georgetown: Miss.  I feel a little sheepish saying it but Georgetown was a huge disappointment.  The area is riddled with litter and frankly, everywhere we went we encountered rude staffing – from the grocery store to the restaurants (with the exception of Lumina Point – which I guess is technically Stocking Island, not Georgetown proper).   The hike up to the monument is nice for some physical activity and the happy hour at Lumina Point was refreshing….the cocktails were tasty, the view is on point and the staff seemed genuinely happy to be there.

3.  Berry Islands:  Miss.  Maybe i’ll get some different opinions here and maybe its a product of having been in the islands for too long and not being able to truly appreciate it but unfortunately, there wasn’t much take away from the Berrys.  The people on the island were incredibly friendly (inviting us to attend a cookout on the beach) and the marina we visited had free bikes and was reasonably priced – but just another 3 hrs. south (see # 5) puts you at the gates to pure bliss….so if we had to do it over again, we’d bypass this stop.

4. Allen’s Cay:  Hit.  Because…iguanas!

5.  Highbourne Cay:  Hit!  Highbourne Cay Marina is what vacation dreams are made of.  Let me start with the surreal water.  I have no idea why, but its a different, more brilliant color than anywhere else we went in the Bahamas.  But once you get into your slip, it just gets better and better.  As you make your way up to the office to check in, the grounds are plush and clean and incredibly inviting.  The staff are friendly and efficient.  The onsite grocery market is seriously the best stocked and cleanest in all of the exumas (yes, better than Exuma Market in Georgetown).  They offer complimentary bikes to explore the island, which you could spend days doing….making your way to Horseshoe Beach (with complimentary beach chairs, kayaks and paddle boards)  or to the Hawk’s Nest – perched on a high point of the island and fully equipped with workout gear (free weights, TRX straps, resistance bands, yoga mats, etc.).  The onsite restaurant is delicious and (true to form) has an amazing view and perfect ambiance. They even have Whispering Angel rosé on the menu!  (score!)

6.  Norman’s Cay:  Hit.  This was one of my favorite anchorages – it was peaceful and the sunset was unreal.  We had dinner at MacDuff’s.  It was priiiicey but good.

7.  Warderick Wells Land & Sea Park:  I’m on the fence about this one.  There’s not much other than the scenery to take in.  We took a decent hike up to the cliffs and Tom did a fair amount of snorkeling but you can’t fish or spear anything on the island, there are no amenities (i.e. restaurants, convenience store, water, ice, power or any trace of cell service).  If you go into knowing this, then it could be fun for a night or two.  We used the opportunity to learn a new card game and lounge under the stars.  No complaints, but not exactly enchanting either.

8. Staniel Cay/Big Major Cay: Hit.  Who doesn’t want to see the swimming pigs??   The Staniel Cay Yacht Club also has a good thing going on!  Friendly staff (Jen, is sweetest!), a fun island vibe and the food is incredible.  Definitely do the evening sit-down dinner!  Its romantic and priced on point.  Its also worth noting that we spotted Bono dining here…Tom was awestruck.

9. Farmers Cay: Miss.This was a sore disappointment for us.  There’s nothing noteworthy here that you can’t see elsewhere and the docking facilities were in sad shape. Goat photos not taken at “Farmers Cay” but too cute and appropriate not to post!

10. Emerald Bay:  Hit.Tom would harshly disagree with me on this but (!) given that Great Exuma was supposed to be…great…i’d have to say, in my book, this was the shining star of the big island.  The Marina at Emerald Bay is owned/operated by Sandals and it has its act together.  You can purchase day passes to the Sandals Resort or walk directly across the street to Grand Isle Resort for an idealistic beach experience.  The Marina at Emerald Bay has free laundry and free wi-fi…rarities!!

12.  Georgetown: Miss.  I feel a little sheepish saying it but Georgetown was a huge disappointment.  The area is riddled with litter and frankly, everywhere we went we encountered rude staffing – from the grocery store to the restaurants (with the exception of Lumina Point – which I guess is technically Stocking Island, not Georgetown proper).   The hike up to the monument is nice for some physical activity and the happy hour at Lumina Point was refreshing….the cocktails were tasty, the view is on point and the staff seemed genuinely happy to be there.

Bahamas: The Hit It or Miss It Run Down

Sorry about the lack of blog posts!  Wi-fi is scarce and to be candid, its a lot of the same day in and day out.   See above if you’re wondering what we’re up to on the daily!

We’re now making our way back to the States – traveling each day as the wind/weather permits.  I’m sooo excited to be back in Florida!  It may sound silly, but how many piña coladas can you actually enjoy?  With that being said, here’s our Hit It or Miss It list, island by island, cay by cay!

1. Bimini:  Hit.  This gem is just two hours off the coast of Florida  AND there’s a (new) legit Hilton hotel that is stunningly beautiful.  There’s a casino, multiple relaxing pools, bars, good wi-fi, a fitness center and several dining options.  Offsite, Big John’s is worth hitting (newly remodeled) and its worth taking a short boat ride over to Honeymoon Harbor  – where you can swim with the stingrays.  We’re told the fishing here is also fantastic…but that also means the water is riddled with sharks!…so maybe not the best diving area?  Not sure, we didn’t risk it.

2.  Nassau:  Hit.  As mentioned in my previous post, we had an absolute blast at Atlantis.   Everything at the marina is first rate – the service is friendly, the docks are impeccable and the hotel itself is grand in nature.  “Paradise Island” was appropriately dubbed!   On our way back, Atlantis was fully booked so we opted to stay on the other side of Nassau at Palm Cay Marina.  Another little slice of paradise…The marina is new, has the cheapest fuel we’ve seen in the Bahamas and has an excellent staff.  Cars are on site for rental, the area feels fresh and clean and it appears that its only getting better (fitness center and condos under construction).
