NaNoWriMo 2022: Day 1
Hey, everyone! So I’m going to be daily word count posts for my NaNoWriMo 2022 Project: Matt & Hess.
Day 1 total Word Count: 2,971
Total Word Count To Date: 2,971
Excerpt:
I left her, but tears sprang in my eyes. Most adults had been lying to us our whole lives and Rosie believed them. They always praised her for being such a beautiful, lovely girl. How proud our parents must be! What an equally beautiful, lovely bride she’d be. No one asked Rosie what she thought. I realized then with a bitter chill; no one cared. She was pretty and that’s all that mattered.
But they usually started when they saw me sitting or standing nearby. What a fetching lad her brother is! They would burst forth and wonder why I flushed and said nothing to them. Mama would correct them and apologize for my unusual dress.
It’s a shame your Matilda wasn’t a young man- the girls would fall over themselves to speak to her, thinking she was a strapping young lad.
There was a beauty to me is what I heard them say over and over again but it was masculine not feminine.

NaNoWriMo 2022: Day 7
My new class started today. I was able to do both grad work and novel drafting.
I did two different scenes. One rewrote part of Anne Bronte’s Agnes Grey. Basically Rosie (Rosalie) and Tilly (Matilda) face off against the Vicar Hatfield.
I know the source text is from the 1840s, but if you’re a grown ass man harassing teenage girls knowing full well they aren’t grown women- you go straight to hell and burn there. Hatfield was chasing after Rosalie in the original and after reexamining the text, I’m on the Murray sisters side even though they’re both minor villains in the story (because they oppose Agnes). They’re teenagers for most of Agnes Grey. Matilda is nineteen at the close of the novel and Rosalie is twenty one, married with her baby. So Tilly & Hess is an extended/rewritten very gay sequel for Anne Bronte’s work.
So Victorian Regina George (Rosalie) and her butch horse girl sister (Matilda) team up to create mayhem as teenage girls are wont to do. I know Anne Bronte wants everyone to see that they’re horrible people, but they’re both girls for most of the novel. At least one of them gets served a very bad hand (a loveless marriage). It’s heavily suggested that her sister will also be miserable in the future because no one likes her. Matilda is usually treated as a crude joke character to emphasize Rosalie’s hyper femininity.
If you read Agnes Grey in a particular way, Rosalie and Matilda could actually be the heroes of the story. After I wrote my paper on Anne Bronte’s opinions of gender and gender expression, I wanted to rewrite Matilda into a story where she could be the heroine of her story and not a joke to be laughed at. Because girls shouldn't have to be feminine to deserve love and a happy life.
So without further ado, here is my word count and excerpt for today...
Day 7 Word Count: 5,306 words
November 2022 Total Word Count to Date: 26,800 words
Excerpt (told from Tilly’s perspective):
Of course, that’s when Miss Grey appeared with the new Curate Weston and she had such a disappointed look when she saw us laughing at Hatfield’s embarrassment. She thought I told Shredder to attack him. But my terrier did that on instinct without my prompting; he could smell the evil on the man and attempted to take it out on his own. Dogs are wonderful judges of character and I’d trust Shredder’s judgment over almost every person I knew. If he was biting Hatfield, the vicar probably deserved it.
“That nasty girl set her dog on me, it’s indeed true, Miss Grey! She is a most shocking creature. But what can one expect from one who practically lives in a barn? Horses don’t have any manners, so why would she?” The vicar seized on the opportunity to blame me for this.
“And neither do you, sir! You came upon us so quickly that you frightened us. Shredder thought you were a threat. He was only doing his duty to protect his mistresses from an unknown assailant.” Rosie quickly retorted. She was bright with words; I let her do the talking for us.
I called Shredder back to me, purposely averting my gaze from Hatfield’s hateful face. My faithful pet brought a substantial chunk of his ugly boot to me as a prize. I knelt down and scratched Shredder behind his ears.
“Good boy.” I said soothingly to him because he had defended us. Not that I was unarmed. I had my riding crop with me and Rosie had a parasol- if he wanted to fight us we had a better chance than he probably imagined. I’m sure he cursed his rotten luck when he saw me walking arm and arm with my sister. He had hoped to find her alone.
“Please, I doubt anything daunts that sister of yours, Miss Murray.” He smiled in a way that made it very clear that he wished I’d vanish off the face of the earth so he could have Rosie to himself. Not, going to happen, Hatfield.
