since we are talking about it. do you have any specific game titles in mind when you think of "amazing pixel art"

OUGH what a question.

Let me start by saying I don't view myself as qualified to talk about what does and doesn't make a good pixel art style so this is mostly just "games I think look nice" but I think what really makes or breaks a pixel style from a player end is how much the environments grab you.

Well I'll say that despite my grievances with them both Sea of Stars and Chained Echoes are very pretty visually. The color palette of SoS and the character models really stand out to me, while I think CE does a great job with the mecha designs and cutscene visuals.

I haven't played them yet but I think that everything I've seen of Chrono Trigger and the OG 1996 Star Ocean show that creating a mood and tone with pixel art environments has been a goal for decades

LoZ Minish Cap does some REALLY cool stuff with its art style and environments since it features a shrinking mechanic. Checked to make sure I was thinking of the right one and. Giant acorns.

I'm a really big fan of pixel art games where the environments try to emulate a painterly shading style tbh.

I might just be biased but I think Pokemon Mystery Dungeon looks really nice. I have a lot of nostalgia for the Fogbound Lake scene (unnecessary screen flash at 1:08 (most important aesthetics are before that and at 3:25 tho)).

Children of Morta's environments are great as well. You can almost feel the like. Overgrown, dirty texture of the world. Both through color palette and details.

Fields of Mistria is like if you took those visual aesthetic mods for Stardew Valley and made it an art style. The palette is vibrant and really creates the cozy fantasy-ish town vibe its going for.

Honorable mention for game I got PURELY cause it's pretty:

Moon Hunters. I tried it, wasn't really vibing with it at the time. But man is it striking with its sort of watercolor pixel art environments.

Working on a mod that puts 2-D over Sebastian in Stardew Valley.

I've got most of the portrait sprites done so far, aside from the angry one. I ought to work a bit more on his hair and maybe make the head wider. I did manage to figure out how to edit dialogue as well but I feel like I don't have to change too much of Sebby's lines. Still, I'm working on making them more 2-D-ish

Sorry that it took me a while to respond. For some reason, this went through 2 or 3 drafts, so it took a bit for me to finalize what exactly I wanted to say. Also, I apologize that it turned out as long as it did, especially when it really didn't need to be 😅. A good 3-4 sentences, or honestly, even just a simple yes or no, probably would have sufficed.

So, before I actually answer the question, I'm assuming that by "games," you mean specifically video games. I apologize if this is an entirely incorrect interpretation. You see, when it comes to stuff like this, I am actually really stupid.

Anyway, with all that out of the way, yes! I do indeed play video games. While I'm down to play just about anything, my absolute favorite games tend to have captivating art direction (Hollow Knight/Gris), engaging worldbuilding (Elden Ring/Bloodborne), engrossing vibes/atmosphere (Demon's Souls/Breath of the Wild), and/or a compelling cast of characters (Hades/Stardew Valley/Armored Core VI).

If I can get emotionally invested in at least one of these aspects, chances are that I'm gonna fall in love with that game, despite whatever faults it may have (Dark Souls II). Additionally, while not mandatory, a great soundtrack can go a long way too (Chrono Trigger/Mario Galaxy). Adding a song to my playlist definitely helps a game stick with me for a lot longer (Guilty Gear).

It doesn't so much matter to me if a game is "fun" either. While fun games (Smash Bros/Mario Kart/co-op games in general) are fun in their own right, it's not entirely necessary in order for me to love a game. I'd be remiss not to mention this, seeing as how it has clearly and undeniably shaped what games I gravitate towards, but I 've struggled with deppresion for over 5-ish years, so having fun can be a bit challenging at times, especially in the context of a single player video game, which is most of what I play. Heck, I would say, with the exception of Hollow Knight and Mario Oddyssey, that I kinda struggle to have a genuinely good time playing any of the games in my top 10 anymore. Dont get me wrong! They have there moments of course, but it's just not the main draw.

Also, not sure if you, or anyone else for that matter, are curious, but my top 7 video games, in no particular order, are Bloodborne, Gris, Dark Souls I, Dark Souls II, Hollow Knight, Elden Ring, Armored Core VI. These are the 7 games that are a straight 10/10 to me. They're all more or less tied for first. Not sure if I could realistically pick a favorite or least favorite out of them. As you can tell, I tend to like games that are kinda depressing.

And, I think that's about it. I could definitely keep going, but I think I'll end it here. I feel like I'd be disrespecting your time if I kept going.

Who was your first TOA muse? If you no longer have them, can you see yourself picking them up again? Maria! unless something unprecedented happens, i don't see that changing. writing her, her want and determination to love and find wonder in the world, to spread and be joy -- it just puts me in a good place! it's really, genuinely helped me a lot, even if her extroversion is exhausting to my introvert ass sometimes HAHA

Do you believe you have a type of character you gravitate towards writing? (If you filled this out last year, has this changed in any way?) uhhh... i definitely tend toward characters who are in some regard defined by a form of love or strong emotion, romantic though it need not be -- people who have some sort of powerful, aching tenderness in their heart. i've not really done as much as i've wanted in terms of bringing that out of them, but it's definitely something that draws me in to a character in the first place!

Do you have characters or types of characters you don’t think you can handle writing, but wish you could? ooh, there are lots of characters i like who have a brusque edge or manner, who might be harsh or cold... i wish i could do that! i'd like to try, i think. and also the funny, energetic, boisterous types -- i love to see them and be around them, but i definitely can't pull it off hahaha

What kind of scenes, situations etc do you believe you enjoy writing the most? (If you filled this out last year, has this changed in any way?) it's been a while since i've gone all in on this kind of scene, but i love emotional scenes and heart-to-hearts -- the sort of thing where you're communicating your feelings with everything you have and trying to reach someone else! i usually rein myself in well shy of that though, hahaha. i worry a lot about getting too lost in the sauce and derailing a conversation/thread, or making it all about what my muse/what they want to communicate.

Do you have any scenario in mind for your muse(s) that gets you thinking “man I hope I get to write this one day”? for katarina, i'd love for her to make some friends! she's her own worst enemy in this regard, separating herself from friends/friendships whether consciously or subconsciously. for maria... well, i'd love for her to have a real heart to heart with someone!

Favorite TOA-related memories? to this day i miss and adore annie's frederick! his dynamic with my cordelia at the time was so much fun to write and to talk about and we had such thoughts for how their relationship would evolve -- it's one of the most interesting and endearing relationships i've had the pleasure of writing! on a sillier note, i often think about leif hauling ass after kanoesa's lewyn HAHA

I'm still physically wiped out and my head's too fuzzy to do 'real' writing/revisions on my story, but I'm just coherent enough that I want to chitter-chatter about my fic.

So in the course of working on Choices, one of the things I've spent an inordinate amount of time on is figuring out the 'cohorts' for the valleyfolk. What I mean by 'cohorts' are the groups of people who are in a similar age-range to one another and then further subdivided into 'natives' (aka 'people who grew up together in the valley') and 'transplants.' After all, one of the things I'm trying to accomplish is interweaving three large expansion mods with the base game and coming up with a cohesive whole, and that means knowing who from the various mods have known each other basically forever.

Under the cut, I break down who's in what cohort. I may or may not later flesh out my thinking about why I plopped certain people into certain groups, mostly because when I started to do so with this list, the post grew disgustingly (more) bloated. If I do, I'll probably do a separate post for each cohort. After all, this is the site for rambling about this sort of random stuff, right? 😅 (Edit: that's exactly how I spent my afternoon. Hi, this is pinned so that everyone who follows this blog has a rough idea of what you're getting into. I really have no idea what to say so bear with me please.

Fake Dating/College AU - it's the only one so far that I've made an outline for because I think it'll be long-ish 😂

Right now it's my Vampire Henry fic ❤️ enjoying it because I'm not struggling too much to write it - and the ideas have been coming easily 😌

5. Which WIP do you find the most intimidating to write? Why?

ooo probably the two canon divergence ones? mostly because they'll probably be the fics with the most angst - yikes

6. Which WIP do you experience the most self-doubt about. Why?

gosh - all of them? I haven't published new fanfic in over 6 years so it's definitely been nerve wracking even sharing snippets over here for wip wednesday 😅

7. Which of your WIPs will you seek out a beta/sensitivity reader for? Why?

Maybe for the longer fics? I'm not sure if I will! We'll see if I ever get to writing anything long enough 😬 I am sort of warming up to the idea of google doc cheerleaders? I dno, I'm such a slow writer though so it might stress me out 😂

8. Have any of your WIPs been struck by the curse of writer's block?

yess the Roommates/College AU - this was the first rwrb fic I started all the way back in June LAST YEAR 😭 I wrote bits and pieces of the first two chapters and still haven't picked it back up since 😩 I've also hit writer's block with the 5+1 - I thought this would be the first fic I'd publish for rwrb AND the first fic I'd ever finish but I got triggered when writing one of the scenes which shocked me because I didn't expect it to? I'd even say this fic is light-hearted but yeah I had to stop. Hoping to finish writing that one after Vampire Henry though !!!

9. Which WIP has your favourite OC? Tell us about them?

ooo so far the only fic with an OC is Fake Dating/College AU but I can't say more without spoiling 👀

10. Which WIP is the sexiest?

Everything is such bare bones atm, so I truly don't know 😂

Probably Canon Divergence from Kensington 😅😅😅

Hoping the characterisation is ok on all of them but right now they're all so short still that I can't pick one out 🙃

Gosh I am BAD at this - will probably end up being the Coffee Shop AU because cafes are my second home but we'll see 😅

14. Which WIP have you worked the hardest on?

As of right now - been working the hardest on Vampire Henry fic but I anticipate it'll be outdone by Fake Dating/College AU - that one will take me a long time to write based on the outline I've done 💀

15. Which WIP do you have the highest expectations for? Why?

ahh I'm not sure! Maybe Fake Dating/College AU? I can already tell that fic is going to be my baby and I hope everyone will like it too

Not really but I do daydream about them in the shower 😂

hmm not sure since everything is still quite bare bones so I'll answer this next time !

Right now - Vampire Henry 😅 but not really ??? but yes the most in comparison to everything else so far LOL

Nope but I do want to write a fic with an outside POV one day!

Vampire Henry fic will probably be the first fic in a series 😬 I have ideas for a sequel OR extra scenes that will be ficlets 🥰

After a paltry 300 ish hours, I emphatically cannot play stardew valley any other way than that tweet or whatever asking why four teenage girls are yelling at each other like military generals or whatever.

There are Goals. There are Timeframes. Decisions, Layout, and Logistics Must Be Decided Upon and then Enacted. There will be No Deviation. You Will Comply. Unfortunately I get very "why didn't you turn in anything today why are you spending money you didn't earn any what are you doing with your day what do you have to show for it" and so on lol.

I will never be shamed by Dead Grampa.

Now...I don't minmax minmax it bc even that is too much for me. But I do ensure a decent coverage of produce so we can complete community center bundles. So we can get the greenhouse ASAP. Which, takes time and you can fuck up the timeframe if you don't get the correct shit grown lol.

There are generally multiple goals running concurrently in the beginning that are important! If you want to livestock you gotta get that silo up so you can gather hay and not waste any you cut down when clearing the farm. Also it's cheaper when your ass is poor that first year lol than buying hay for animals unless you have to.

You have to farm enough but you need to get started on socializing if you want to get that reasonably going in any amount of time. After the first time, way way back when, that my bestie and I had to dance with each other at the spring dance we promised NEVER AGAIN lolololololol.

So it can be a push to get the farm up and going, AND socializing enough for any given positives you can pick up early on and your selected prey-i mean dance partner lol. Whatever you choose to do outside of farming must provide income lol. If you're fishing you better fuckin FISH lol. If you in that mine, you better mine lol. There are scheduled runs for foraging, like at the beach lol.

Then, it's the Aesthetic of the farm. You gotta plan for that or so much time gets wasted especially if you're tryna move shit and all that jazz. Our last playthrough, we realized we could plant tea bushes as fences and then you have permanent fencing and it's pretty. But you gotta friend up Caroline to get those, and that is someone we never spent a lot of time with in most games lol so. Lolololol

This SVE mod is HUGE. I didn't realize how much I have the og map mostly memorized or at least some kind of muscle memory lol. And now it's bigger in all kinds of places and it's been throwing off my timing lolololololol.

I told my brother that this would be his circus and I would be his monkey so he's gonna need to figure out what and where he wants shit lololol. And he just. Did not have answer. He has played this before lololololol.

So. I repaired the beach. Cleared some on the farm, set up a tree farm, began laying out rough layouts with decorative/productive trees like maples and the new birch tree. Been farming and fishing and socializing lololololol when I'm low on energy bc what I forage mostly gets sold bc we are poor lol. Did get us the first backpack upgrades though lol. I'm sure he'll play while I'm at work lol. So maybe I won't have to worry about the dance lololol

I typically stay away from video games for the same reason someone with a history of addiction in their family should stay away from drugs.....that sounds like a joke, but I am actually kind of serious lol. with the desperate strangle hold I have to have on myself and my focus in order to do ANYTHING instead of being paralyzed in a chair all day, new interests can be debilitating. one of my friends keeps begging me to play stardew valley and I have been staunchly refusing bc the kinds of games with no end that involve collecting/organizing are a hazard. I only tried minecraft bc I thought it looked boring and wouldn't hold my attention, but unfortunately all those annoying middle schoolers were onto something (this game came out + blew up when I was in middle school and several people made it their whole personality)

anyway, i'm fine now, but I did get frustrated with feeling lost in this fic and sucked into a side hyperfixation and started making notes on that instead. I'll get back into this fic soon (this has happened a lot, this is why I write so slow)

guess I should still summarize the last 2 weeks i forgot to make posts for...

Week 8, I was still productive (somewhat) at least half the week and added about 2,850 words. All of that was adding and editing in old draft snippits.

Week 9 (last week) I was super out of it and making notes on a different fanfiction so there's only about 380 new words

I think he's a mix between 5sos' Voodoo Doll, Troye Sivan's Strawberries and Cigarettes, Taylor Swift's Style, and the last 90-ish seconds of Sleep Token's The Summoning. Also Conan Gray's Overdrive. He's still young and reckless, but he's a little more subdued and all over the place.

One Directions' Steal My Girl, Shawn Mendes' Wonder, and Harry Styles' Watermelon Sugar. Even though they're pretty heavy with gendered language, I have no issue imagining Alex with varying farmers while listening to these songs.

Elliott

His love definitely swerves more toward obsession and worship, so anything by Hozier, no question about it. But also Can't Take My Eyes Off You by Frank Valli is heavy Elliott energy.

Shane

Everybody Wants You by Johnny Orlando, Someone To You by BANNERS, DogBird by Madds Buckley, and Lauv's I Like Me Better. Like Seb, Shane's pretty all over the place as well. Also he makes me cry ahaha. hm.

Harvey

Harvey gave me a little bit of trouble when I first started writing. I had to think about him quite a bit to land on a genre/song for him. Anyway, Ophelia by The Lumineers, Ready Now by dodie, and The Way You Look Tonight by Michael Bublé are all Harvey coded. END ME

Maru

In My Mind by Lyn Lapid, Bubble Gum by Clairo, and Space Girl by Frances Forever. I imagine her as a pretty inexperienced and romantically repressed character (I wonder why Demetrius) so all of these songs have a certain level of melancholy about them, which is very Maru for me.

Penny

She by dodie, Conan Gray's Heather, and Lonely by Noah Cyrus. Repressed, just like Maru, but for different reasons. Never had the opportunity to really live her life, you know? Lots of insecurities and feelings of inadequacy my poor babie nO but I usually only listen to those when I'm feeling a little down. You can trust that I don't always write angst for her, and when I don't, it's loooots of early Taylor Swift.

Abigail

Very punchy, "powerful woman" type songs. Namely UPSAHL's People I Don't Like, Beautiful is Boring by BONES UK, and American Horror Show by SNOW WIFE. She has opinions and she's going to let you know what she thinks—but make no mistake, she is a loyal and good person to her core. She's just got an attitude sometimes.

Haley

Sabrina Carpenter. That's it. lmao no i'm kidding Diamonds Are Forever, Nonsense, Looking At Me, and Girlfriend by Bea Miller. I love me a mean, confident lesbian, but she does soften up the more you get to know her, and I always listen to Isabel LaRosa's I'm Yours when I want to go that route with her. I also think of her when I listen to Dress by Charlotte Sands.

Leah

Cosmic Love by Florence + The Machines, Light My Love by Greta Van Fleet, and Constellations by The Oh Hellos. She's got a certain whimsy about her, but she's still a very grounded individual. She and Elliott have a similar vibe to each other, but where he's the smell of salty sea spray and plum juice dripping from your fingers, she's frayed picnic blankets and the smell of grass after it rains.

Emily

Now this might be controversial, but Señorita by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello is always gonna make me think of her. I'm Born To Run by American Authors, Enchanted by Taylor Swift (her version, obviously), are also both some of the easiest songs for me to think about her. She definitely believes in soulmates and fate, and probably makes jewelry or sews while thinking about you.
