It wasn't something I was used to being summoned for, being a babysitter for an exhausted mom, but looking at that poor and desperate mom's face and at the child staring at me with such curiosity and surprise, I couldn't help but stay, even giving the mom a freebe so she didn't have to lose her soul. The toddler was no older than 4, Misty, with curly brown hair and warm brown eyes that held as much happiness as her mind held questions. She asked me everything about what I did, I obviously didn't tell her much, but I told her a sweet version where I only punish bad people and protect good people. Then she asked me something I didn't expect, if I was the reason she and her mom were safe from her uncle after her dad died and if her dad was in a good place. My heart broke at the question, it really was true what other demons would say: Children can always tell, even when they don't understand. I called a demon friend and asked around, it was revealed that the uncle was the mom's ex husband and he wasn't nice before, her dad was the one who got her mom away from that awful family and they fell in love, he died when Misty was 3 from lung cancer and the uncle found her and her mom, he wasn't happy. A friend of her dad stopped her uncle from hurting them and offered the mother-daughter duo a safe place, which was helpful as the mom's workload got bigger, but her pay stayed small. I had to keep myself from crying after I heard that from my friend, then I turned to the little girl.
"I didn't help you that way, Sweetie, someone your dad influenced to be good helped you and your mom... but I can tell you, your dad is in a good place... patiently waiting for you and your mom, but he wants you both to live a happy life first..." I said.
"Oh, Mommy said that's where he is..." she chimed.
I gently rustled her hair, giving her a sympathetic smile.
"She's right... and your Mom loves you... so much, she and your dad both do..." I said.
She giggled happily and asked me if I wanted to draw pictures with her, to which I naturally agreed. Though I couldn't cross the boarder to do more with her, she could've told me to give her the world and I would've found a way to do it. It was clear that she was in a safe and loving home with a kind and loving mom, she was sweet and polite with the brightest smile I've ever seen. Her mom came back a few hours later, so exhausted from working she accidentally messed up the summoning circle, allowing me to either go back to hell or do things on earth, so I helped the mom, a sweet lady named Lydia, to the couch and cooked them both dinner. Then I put Misty to bed and took care of the cleaning, meeting Lydia in the living room and happy to see the woman relaxing, she looked at me with gratitude.
"Thank you for watching my baby girl... I guess you want me to give you my soul now?" She asked.
"Nah, it was on me, Misty is a delight and you bith are much too good for me to want to take your soul, if either of you need assistance... feel free to call... no strings attached... Call for Cassandra and I'll show up." I replied, handing her a phone with a line directly to my office in hell.
With that, I went back to hell and worked on trying to get the uncle down to hell as fast as possible. The uncle met a swift end before he could try to harm either of them, and I was fortunate enough to be the one delivering his punishment. I made sure to put him through everything he knows he fears and then some. Soon, I was called on again to watch little Misty, and it became a regular thing for us, I quickly became like an aunt to Misty, watching her grow and even getting invited to her graduation, where I wore my best outfit. I was there for the big milestones for Misty and making sure Lydia could get off work for all of them, from Misty learning to drive to her wedding to a lovely young man to her becoming a mother. I became like a second grandmother to Misty's kids, cherishing them as if they were my own as I had a few demonic children of my own that were now grown by that point. I was there for Misty when Lydia died of old age after a much happier life, getting the go ahead to greet Lydia at heaven's gates so I could hug her and welcome her to a good paradise where she could reunite with her husband, doing the same for Misty when her time came. I followed that family for years after those two until I couldn't travel to earth anymore, never once did I regret it, and I don't think I ever will.
You’re a demon. One day, you’re summoned into a living room, and an exhausted woman quickly rambles about needing to get to work and being unable to find a sitter before flying out the door. Now, you stand in your summoning circle, a toddler staring wide eyed at you.
